I do not feel engine braking effect when I apply brake instead I have to press brake hard to hold until engine idles. It is a serious issue in older cars. My car has 153000 miles.

I WAS EXCITING A FREEWAY. AS I USUALLY DO, I DISENGAGED THE CLUTCH EXPECTING THE CRUISE CONTROL TO ALSO DISENGAGE AND COAST TO THE STOP SIGN WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF MY BRAKE. INSTEAD, AS SOON AS I DISENGAGED THE CLUTCH, THE CAR ACCELERATED AS IF SOMEONE HAD PUT THEIR FOOT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKE HAD NO IMPACT TO SLOW THE ACCELERATION. I TURNED THE KEY OFF, HOPING THAT WOULD HELP - BUT THE MOMENTUM CARRIED ME FORWARD AT A GREAT SPEED. I MANAGED TO DODGE SOME CARS AND HEADED (AND LANDED) IN A DITCH ACROSS FROM THE STOP AT THE END OF THE EXIT.. THE ONLY POSSIBLE WARNING THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS MIGHT HAPPEN IS THAT I HAD EXPERIENCED SOME TROUBLE WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL GOING OFF COMPLETELY - AND HAVING TO RE-SET WHILE DRIVING. I HAD NO EXPERIENCE WITH ACCELERATION PROBLEMS.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE LEAVING A PARKING SPACE WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED, THE TRANSMISSION WAS SHIFTED OUT OF PARK AND THE VEHICLE JUMPED AND SPED FORWARD AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND SANK TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND CRASHED INTO A SNOW BANK. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS 160,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD CRACKING NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE AS THE VEHICLE STALLED. AFTER INSPECTION, THE CONTACT NOTICED OIL LEAKING FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT PART OF THE ENGINE HAD FALLEN AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE ENTIRE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. WE BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY CE IN 2000 AND WERE PRETTY COMFORTABLE WITH THE VEHICLE UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENED TO US ABOUT 8 WEEKS AGO. ON JAN 22, WE WERE DRIVING ON I 15 FREEWAY SOUTH FROM LA BACK TO LAS VEGAS. ABOUT AFTER 30 MINUTES ON THE ROAD I HEARD SOMETHING SOUNDING LIKE A CRACK UNDER THE VEHICLE (LAST ONLY ABOUT ONE SECOND). I THOUGHT THE VEHICLE MIGHT HIT A ROCK UNDERNEATH AND SLOWED DOWN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED. THEN IN ABOUT 3 MINUTES THE VEHICLE LOST THE POWER. I TURNED ON THE EMERGENCY FLASH LIGHT AND PULLED THE VEHICLE TO THE ROADSIDE. I COULD SEE THAT THE ENGINE OIL WAS LEAKING OUT BADLY. AFTER LOTS OF HASSLES THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO CROWN TOYOTA DEALER SHOP IN ONTARIO. THE NEXT DAY MORNING THEIR SERVICE MANAGER CALLED TO TELL ME THAT NOTHING INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE HIT A ROCK SINCE THERE WAS NO DAMAGE OUTSIDE OF THE ENGINE. TO THE BEST OF HIS JUDGMENT THE ENGINE WAS DAMAGED FROM INSIDE. HE SAID SOMETHING FROM INSIDE OF ENGINE COULD FALL DOWN AND KNOCKED THE ENGINE THAT CAUSED THE LEAKING. SOON AFTER THAT MY INSURANCE COMPANY DENIED MY CLAIM STATING THAT THEY TALKED TO THE CROWN TOYOTA DEALER SHOP AND CONCLUDED THE ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED BY THE MECHANICAL FAILURE OF THE ENGINE, WHICH IS NOT COVERED BY THE INSURANCE POLICY. LAST MONTH I HAD THE ENGINE REPLACED IN AN AUTO SHOP AND WAS TOLD THE SAME THING ABOUT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. FROM PICTURES ATTACHED ONE CAN SEE A BIG HOLE KNOCKED OUT ON ENGINE(SEE ATTACHED PICTURE). IT IS A REAL SURPRISE TO ME SINCE THE VEHICLE HAS RUN ONLY 79,500 MILES AND WE GAVE IT MAINTENANCE ON REGULAR BASES AS REQUIRED. BY THIS LETTER WE REQUEST AN INVESTIGATION OF WHAT ENGINE DEFECT CAUSED THE FAILURE AND AN EXPLANATION FROM TOYOTA COMPANY. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE BRAKING FROM 3 MPH IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT COASTED OFF THE ROADWAY AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY WHERE THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE EGR VALVE. THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE CONTACT STATED THE FAILURE WOULD ONLY OCCUR WHEN TRAVELING AT LOW SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE UNKNOWN REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE REPAIR DID NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE AND IT RECURRED AT LEAST FIVE TIMES FOLLOWING REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE AN ADEQUATE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE 119,000.

ON IT WITH A BUBBLE ON MY TIRE AND HAD TO REPLACE IT AT A CA COST OF $134.51. FIVE MONTHS LATER ON 11/02/09 I WENT BACK TO TOWN FAIR TIRE WITH 83,000 MILES ON MY CAR AND ANOTHER BUBBLE ON MY TIRE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR FORTY TWO YEARS AND NEVER HAD A BUBBLE ON A TIRE AND IN A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AND LESS THAN 10,000 MILES I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE TWO OF THESE TIRES BECAUSE OF BUBBLES. WHILE PULLING OVER TO THE OFF RAMP, AND APPLYING THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN, THE BRAKE PEDAL ITSELF WOULD FIGHT BACK, PUSHING AGAINST THE PRESSURE. AN INSPECTION BY THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP REVEALED NO FRONT END ALIGNMENT PROBLEM (THE FRONT END HAD BEEN ALIGNED LESS THAN 10,000 MILES EARLIER), AND A CHECK BY THE TIRE COMPANY DID NOT REVEAL ANY UNEVEN WEAR ON THE TIRES. THE PROBLEM WOULD MANIFEST ITSELF INTERMITTENTLY, AND ONLY AFTER TRAVELING MORE THAN 5 MILES ON THE FREEWAY AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. I TOOK THE CAR TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP LAST MONTH AND, AFTER A TEST DRIVE WITH THE MECHANIC, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKES WERE ENGAGING WHEN THEY HEATED UP AFTER DRIVING MORE THAN 5 MILES. THE SOLUTION SUGGESTED WAS TO REPLACE THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER AT A COST OF $1400! I WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC THAT CONTINUING TO DRIVE THE CAR UNDER THESE CONDITIONS WOULD RESULT IN THE BRAKES LOCKING UP - A VERY SCARY SITUATION. THE DEALERSHIP ASSURED ME THERE HAD BEEN NO BULLETINS OR RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS MODEL AND PROBLEM, BUT I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT MY SOLARA IS THE ONLY CAMRY MODEL TO EXPERIENCE THIS SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. I HAVE DRIVEN AMERICAN CARS IN THE PAST - ONE, A BUICK LESABRE, FOR MORE THAN 13 YEARS AND MORE THAN 180,000 MILES WITHOUT A PROBLEM OF THIS MAGNITUDE. THE SYSTEM IS INSTALLED TO MEET EPA REQUIREMENTS WHICH LIMIT HYDROCARBON EMISSIONS FROM THE ATMOSPHERE. THIS FAILURE ALONG WITH OTHERS REPRESENTED BY CODES P0440, P0441, P0442, ETC. HAVE BEEN REPORTED ESPECIALLY FOR TOYOTA MODELS BUILT FROM THE LATE 1990'S THROUGH EARLY TO MID 2000S AND HAVE PLAGUED MOTORIST FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS OR MORE. YET NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN BY EPA OR DOT TO REMEDY WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT IN THIS SYSTEM IN THESE CARS AS REPORTED NUMEROUS TIMES HERE AND IN OTHER PLACES ON THE INTERNET. WHY NOT? I WAS TOLD THE VSV NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, IT WAS ON A RECALL LIST AND I SHOULD TAKE IT TO A TOYOTA DEALER. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO KING TOYOTA IN DEERFIELD BEACH, FL AND PAID AN $80.88 DIAGNOSTIC FEE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR NEEDED VSV AND A CHARCOAL CANISTER. I WAS ALSO TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THESE PARTS AND THE REPAIR COST WOULD BE $628. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS NOT TO REPLACE THESE PARTS BECAUSE IF I AM REAR-ENDED THE GAS TANK WILL EXPLODE, SIMILAR TO THE RECALL FOR THE FORD PINTO. HAVE HAD 4 WINDSHIELDS SINCE WE BOUGHT THIS CAR. THE FIRST TIME IT WAS REPLACED THE GLASS PEOPLE SAID THAT THERE WAS NO PRIMER UNDER THE BLACK EXTERIOR PAINT WHICH PROBABLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE BREAK. EACH TIME AFTER THE REPAIR PEOPLE SAID THE SAME THING. LACK OF PRIMER ACCELERATED BODY ROT AROUND THE WINDSHIELD. NOW WATER POURS INTO THE DRIVER SIDE FLOOR DUE TO ROT AROUND THE WINDSHIELD - AUTO BODY SHOP IS LOOKING AT IT NOW. THEY SAID IT COULD BE EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR, THEY ARE GOING TO TRY TO FIX IT SO THAT IT DOESN'T LEAK. THIS IS THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT. REAR WINDOW OF CONVERTIBLE TOP KEEPS HITTING THE BACK SEAT. WINDOW FINALLY BROKE OFF PIECE OF BACK SEAT A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. WINDOW NOW HAS COME LOOSE - HANGING FROM THE CONVERTIBLE TOP. TOOK CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SOLARA. THEY WILL MANUALLY ADJUST THE BACK SEAT FORWARD. THEY HAVE TO REPLACE THE REAR GLASS AND ASSEMBLY. AS SOON AS THE REPAIR FACILITY SAW MY CAR, THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG. THEY SAID THEY HAVE HAD TO FIX A LOT OF SOLARA CONVERTIBLES. MY QUESTION, CONCERN IS THIS: MY AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY (NEITHER DRIVER OR PASSENGER) AND ACCORDING TO MY OWNER'S MANUAL THEY SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. ALSO, THE DRIVERS SEAT WAS FORCED INTO APPROXIMATELY A 45 DEGREE RECLINING POSITION DURING THE IMPACT AND IS CURRENTLY LOCKED INTO THAT POSITION. MY CAR HAD A POWER DRIVER'S SEAT AND SHOULD NOT HAVE COLLAPSED. THE MANUFACTURER INDICATED THAT THE SEATS WERE DESIGNED TO DO THIS BUT I CANNOT FIND ANYTHING IN THE MANUAL, ON THEIR SITE OR ON THE WWW TO THIS EFFECT. THE IMPACT WAS ENOUGH THAT A BIG MAC IN MY RIGHT HAND WAS THROWN AGAINST THE ODOMETER, DOWN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CAR AND INTO THE BACK SEAT ON THE WINDOWS. A 32 OUNCE COKE WAS SPLATTERED THROUGHOUT THE CAR INTO THE DASH ELECTRONICS (CD PLAYER, TAPE DECK, ETC.) AND A CLOSED ARM REST. THE IMPACT SEEMS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO WARRANT AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND THE FACT THAT THE SEAT BACK DID NOT PROVIDE BACK SUPPORT IS OF GREAT CONCERN TO ME. A CURSORY INTERNET SEARCH SHOWED THAT THE VALVE PART WAS ACTUALLY A SENSOR THAT REGULATES FUEL. THE INTERNET SEARCH SHOWED SEVERAL ARTICLES ABOUT INPROPERLY CALIBRATED SENSORS AND ARTICLES SAYING THAT 2001 CAMRYS MANUFATURED IN KENTUCKY WERE UNDER RECALL FOR DEFECTIVE SENSORS. I WAITED FOR A RECALL NOTICE, AND NEVER RECEIVED ONE. I SEARCHED AGAIN FOR THE CALIBRATION ARTICLES AND A MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE LIGHT WOULD TURN OFF IF I DID NOT CARRY A LOT OF LUGGAGE IN THE TRUNK , DID NOT ACCELERATE TOO QUICKLY OR USE A BICYCLE RACK ON THE TRUNK. AVOIDING THESE THINGS CAUSED THE LIGHT TO GO OUT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME, USUALLY A FEW THOUSAND MILES, AND THEN THE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND GO BACK OFF BEFORE I COULD TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC. I INQUIRED AT TWO TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS TO SEE IF MY CAR WAS TO BE RECALLED. BOTH SAID NO. THE NATIONAL TOYOTA CUSTOMER RELATIONS INSISTED NO 2001 CAMRYS FROM KENTUCKY WERE RECALLED, DESPITE MY FINDING THAT SEVERAL RECALL WEBSITES LISTED THEM. I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY LE. I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR APPROX 11 MONTHS. IN AUGUST MY SON WHILE LEAVING THE BEACH CLAIMED THE ABS BREAKS LOCKED UP CAUSING HIM TO SLIDE INTO A POLE IN THE PARKING LOT. NEITHER AIR BAG WAS DEPLOYED BUT THERE WAS OVER 6000 DAMAGE. THE MECHANIC SAID IT WAS A LOW IMPACT HIT ... THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AND BREAKS CHECKED AND SAID TO BE WORKING. NOW JUST 7 MONTHS FROM THAT ACCIDENT I WAS DRIVING IN A SNOW STORM AND DESPITE MY BEST DRIVING I TOO EXPERIENCED THE ABS BREAKS ACTUALLY LOCKING ... ON A HILL IN THE SNOW CAUSING MY CAR TO FISH TAIL AND ALL THE WHILE GAINING SPEED LEAVING ME WITH NO WAY TO SLOW DOWN MY PASSENGER WATCH THE SPEEDOMETER GO FROM 15... TO 30... TO 35 WHICH IS WHEN HE CLOSED HIS EYES AS I MADE ONE LAST ATTEMPT TO STEER THE CAR STRAIGHT WE WENT OFF THE ROAD WIPING OUT 2 OR 3 SMALL TREES, A METAL POLE LUCKILY THERE WAS A RATHER LARGE ROCK UNDER THE SNOW THAT GOT STUCK UNDER THE TAIL END OF THE CAR LEAVING THE CAR "NOSE" END INTO THE GROUND. NEITHER AIR BAG DEPLOYED ONCE AGAIN. THE DRIVERS SIDE LIGHT WAS COMPLETELY TORN OUT, THE TIRES CAME PARTIALLY OFF THE RIM AND THE FRAME IS NOW TWISTED THE IMPACT WAS DEFIANTLY OVER 30 MPH WITH NO AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. ON 5/10/2006 WHILE DRIVING MY 2001 CAMRY SOLARA ON A RURAL ROAD I COULDN'T SLOW THE CAR DOWN, BRAKING DIDN'T HELP. I KEPT BEARING TO THE RIGHT OFF THE ROAD BECAUSE I WAS HAVING A HARD TIME CONTROLLING THE CAR, CAR WANTED TO GO TOWARDS THE CARS TRAVELING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. FINALLY, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR OFF THE ROAD, CAR SPUN OUT IN GRAVEL THAT WAS ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. CAR DID AT LEAST TWO FULL CIRCLES THAN POPPED SOME 10 FEET WHERE CAR HIT TELEPHONE POLE ON ITS DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. THIS WAS A GREAT IMPACT ON MY SHOULDERS. AT THE TIME ALL I KNEW WAS THAT THE CAR WOULDN'T SLOWDOWN EVEN WHEN BRAKING. I KNOW NOW AND HAVE FOR SOME YEARS THAT THE EXCELERATOR STUCK ON THIS VEHICLE. SURE ENOUGH NOT UNTIL A COUPLE YEARS AFTER MY ACCIDENT TOYOTA CAME OUT WITH THERE EXCELERATOR PROBLEMS. SO I JUST THOUGHT IT SHOULD BE KNOWN THAT TOYOTA HAD THESE PROBLEMS ON THERE 2001 CAMRY'S ALSO BECAUSE IT HAPPENED TO ME. THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL OF OUR 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY SUDDENLY CAME OFF FROM THE AXEL WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (AROUND 65 MPH). THIS HAPPENED ON THE INTERSTATE 78 HIGHWAY IN PA. THIS LEAD TO CAR SINKING TO THE LEFT AND HITTING THE GUARD RAIL, THEN SPNNING ACROSS THE HIGHWAY, HITTING THE OTHER GUARD RAIL. THE CAR WAS TOTALED. PEOPLE WERE INJURED, ONE PERSON AT THE BACK SEAT HAD HEAD INJURY, ONE HAS HAD CHRONIC NECK PROBLEMS SINCE THEN, OTHERS KEEP HAVING NECK TROUBLES OFF AND ON. THE WHEEL JUMPED THE MEDIAN AND FLEW OFF TO THE OTHERSIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE COMING OFF OF THE WHEEL WAS SUDDEN, GIVING NO TIME TO THE DRIVER TO DO ANYTHING TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE CAR ONLY HAD ROUGHLY 55,000 MILES ON IT AND WE HAD GOTTEN AN OIL CHANGE AND MULTIPOINT INSPECTION SERVICE ON THE CAR ABOUT 1000 MILES BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. THIS VEHICLE HAS A TENDENCY TO SWAY OR OVERSTEER WHEN GOING AROUND CORNERS. THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH GENERAL HP 400 A/S TIRES, DOT NUMBER ACUR 3HU 5200 DX 67614 33712. THE MANUAL CALLS FOR PRESSURE OF 29 PSI FRONT AND REAR. THE SWAY IS VERY PRONOUNCED AT THIS LOW PRESSURE. A SUGGESTION FROM THE TOYOTA GARAGE AND TIRE DEALER WAS TO INCREASE THE TIRE PRESSURE TO 34 PSI. WITH THE TIRES INFLATED TO 34 PSI IT IS NOW VERY UNSTABLE WHEN DRIVING IN GUSTY WINDS. Resumed low speed turn into driveway, Abrupt acceleration of vehicle, launching vehicle over granite curb and into nearby tree. Damage: Passenger R.Front Fender, Passenger Headlamp Assy;Lower Control Arm Assy, Front Bumper cover, Passenger wheel rim bent, tire deflated. Unintended vehicle acceleration is a serious safety defect and can occur when the Idle Air Control Valve is defective or is provided incorrect engine rpm signal from Engine Control Computer causing sudden vehicle acceleration.

I PULLED OVER AND GOT OUT AND NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE FLUID WAS LOW AND I HAD TO GO BUY DOT 3 AND PUT IT IN THE MASTER CYLINDER. I KEPT DRIVING IT UNTIL I COULD FIND OUT WHAT IT WAS AN WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED A BRAKE BOOSTER, BUT THE CAR ONLY HAS 87,546 MILE'S ON IT.

I AM THE 2ND OWNER OF THIS CAR , AND I HAVE LOVED IT UNTIL THE DAY THE ACCELERATOR DIDN'T WORK. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A MOUNTAIN, NOT USING THE ACCELERATOR UNTIL I REACHED THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. I TRIED MASHING IT AS HARD AS I COULD, NO MOVEMENT. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTED. THE PEDAL WAS OK, ACCELERATED JUST FINE. I BELIEVE I REBOOTED THE COMPUTER. I CAREFULLY DROVE TO MY MECHANIC, HE CHECKED THE "PLATES" AND OTHER POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE , THEY ADVISED TAKING IT TO THE NEAREST DEALER. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST BUT I COULD BRING IT IN TO BE CHECKED. I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR THAT DISTANCE OVER 200 MILES ROUNDTRIP. I LATER RECEIVED A SMALL CHECK FROM "TOYOTA ECONOMIC LOSS SETTLEMENT ADMINISTRATOR " FOR A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT. I DID NOT CASH IT. I WAS ADVISED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR. I WOULD LIKE TO SELL IT BUT ETHICALLY CAN NOT BECAUSE I DON'T WANT SOMEBODY KILLED OR INJURED IN IT. I WAS TRAVELING IN MY TOYOTA CAMRY 2001 ON I 75 S FROM ROYAL OAK TO DETROIT, MI AROUND 2:30 AM ON SEPTEMBER 6TH 2009 ,WHEN SUDDENLY I HEARD SOME CRACKING NOISE UNDERNEATH THE HOOD AND FIRE FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. AFTER THE CAR IS RUNNING FOR APPROXIMATELY 20-MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD, THERE IS A BURNING SMELL SIMILAR TO BURNING RUBBER. THE INSIDE OF THE CAR NEAR THE FLOOR ON DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE WILL BECOME WARM. IT APPEARS HEAT IS GENERATED FROM THE ENGINE INTO THE INSIDE OF THE CAR THUS RESULTING IN BURNING ODOR. UPON ACCELERATION, THE CAR HAS A JERKY, PROPELLING MOTION FORWARD. STEERING COLUMN HAS SOME STIFFNESS AND AT OTHER TIMES IT HAS LOT OF PLAY WITH TURNS. THE POWER/ELECTRIC WINDOWS, CLOCK, AND CD/RADIO PLAYER DO NOT WORK PROPERLY. THESE DEFECTS/FAULTS OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS AFTER USED VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. AS VEHICLE WAS SOLD AS IS, I DID NOT RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. CAR WAS TAKEN TO LOCAL MECHANIC AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG. AFTER PARKING IN THE LIBRARY PARKING LOT, WALKING INTO LIBRARY, A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE LIBRARIAN ANNOUNCED AND ASKED THE OWNER OF CAMRY WITH THE SPECIFIC PLATE NUMBER TO GO TO FRONT LOBBY. BOTH THE MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALER SHOWED NO CONCERN ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY FAMILY THAT I WAS DRIVING WITHOUT THOSE CRITICAL PARTS. WITHIN ONE WEEK OF OWNERSHIP, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO BOG DOWN WHEN MAKING A TURN FROM A DEAD STOP. A DAY LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE PROBLEM WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERS ATTENTION AND THE REPLY WAS THAT; "WE DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG, WHEN WE FIND OUT WE'LL LET YOU KNOW...UNTIL THEN, BE CAREFUL" THAT WAS OVER A MONTH AGO AND I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING FROM THEM. I CALLED TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY STILL DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT WAS WRONG. THE VEHICLE IS UNPREDICTABLE WHEN TAKING OFF AND HAS ALREADY RESULTED IN A COUPLE OF CLOSE CALLS WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. THE GENERAL ATTITUDE IS NONCHALANT AND NOBODY HAS MADE ANY ATTEMPT TO NOTIFY ME OF ANYTHING. FROM WHAT I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP. ALL THE 2001 HIGHLANDERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM.
