How to read a Toyota Camry VIN — every digit explained

Every Toyota Camry carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Camry.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Camry VIN

Vehicle Speed Control:accelerator Pedal09V388000

What's wrong. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2010 passenger vehicles. The accelerator pedal can get stuck in the wide open position due to its being trapped by an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat.

Risk. A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.

Fix. Toyota filed an amended defect report on november 25, 2009, stating that dealers will modify the accelerator pedal and, on certain vehicles, alter the shape of the floor surface under the pedal. These changes address the risk of pedal entrapment due to interference with the floor mat. Redesigned accelerator pedals will become available beginning in april 2010 and dealers will replace any modified pedal with the new pedal if desired. Also, dealers will replace any genuine toyota or lexus all-weather floor mats with redesigned all-weather mats, or repurchase the previous mats from owners who do not want the new ones. Additionally, software modifications will be installed on camry, avalon and lexus es 350, is 350 and is 250 models that will ensure that the brake overrides the accelerator in the event both brake and accelerator pedals are applied. 2008 Toyota Camry recalls 8

Equipment07E082000

What's wrong. Certain all weather floor mats (awfm) specifically sold as an optional accessory for use on the 2007 and 2008 model year lexus es350 and toyota camry vehicles. The awfm includes two grommet holes and retaining hooks (clips) to secure the mat to the vehicle's carpet. If the awfm is not secured by itself or if it is placed on top of an existing carpeting floor mat, the mat could move forward during the vehicle usage and it may interfere with the accelerator pedal.

Risk. The accelerator pedal may temporarily become stuck in a partially depressed position when returning to the idle position. If this condition occurs, it may increase the possibility of a crash.

Fix. Toyota will notify owners of all 2007 and 2008 lexus es350 and toyota camry vehicles about the recall even though not all of these owners will have purchased the all weather mats. If the owner had not purchased the mats, they are not affected by the recall. This letter will advise owners when replacement mats will be available or how to return the all weather floor mat set to obtain a refund. A second letter will be sent after mats are available requesting owners to return their mats to a lexus or toyota dealer for exchange of the driver's side mat. The first letter is expected to be sent during early october 2007 and the second in late november 2007. Owners can contact the lexus customer assistance center at 1-800-255-3987 or the toyota customer experience center at 1-888-270-9371.

Vehicle Speed Control:accelerator Pedal10V017000

What's wrong. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 avalon, model year 2007-2010 camry, model year 2009-2010 corolla, corolla matrix, rav4, model year 2010 highlander, model year 2008-2010 sequoia, and model year 2007-2010 tundra vehicles. Due to the manner in which the friction lever interacts with the sliding surface of the accelerator pedal inside the pedal sensor assembly, the sliding surface of the lever may become smooth during vehicle operation. In this condition, if condensation occurs on the surface, as may occur from heater operation (without a/c) when the pedal assembly is cold, the friction when the accelerator pedal is operated may increase, which may result in the accelerator pedal becoming harder to depress, slower to return, or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position.

Risk. The accelerator pedal may become hard to depress, slow to return to idle, or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. Dealers will install a reinforcement bar in the accelerator pedal which will allow the pedal to operate smoothly. Gm will notify owners for the pontiac vibe please see 10v-018. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on february 5, 2010 and will be completed on march 15, 2010. Owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Upon examining the vehicle immediately after the incident, the driver console displayed red error lights indicating that airbags had been deployed despite none having done so. Both the driver and i sustained serious and ongoing injuries as a result. The vehicle had approximately 27000 miles at the time of the incident. There are confirmed reports from toyota demonstrating that airbag sensors are prone to failing at the chip edge due to large internal tensile stress inconjunction with defects in the sensor causing it to delaminate.

I had just bought a 2010 toyota camry in march 2010. My wife was driving it at approximately 65mph and a wreckless motorcycle driver hit the car at appx 100 mph, the motorcycle damaged the car was a total loss due to the severe damage to the roof, the side rear side panels the trunk the bumper rear windshield and interior, the driver landed in the roof but almost went inside the car through the rear windshield which was broken two air bags are located on each side of the rear windshield, they came out of place but did not deploy, my passengers were injured, my 4 yr old's car sit was in the car but she was not in the car at the time, the motorcycle and the driver's body actually would have hit her if she would have been inside the car and if he would have gone inside the car through the windshield, (rear) he would have killed my passengers. I have some pictures and i would like you to see them, it is obvious that the air bags should have deployed. *tr

Had accident in 2007 toyota camry. Vehicle hesitated as i had accelerated to go around a truck to avoid hitting it. This car hesitates about 2 to 3 seconds before taking off. When car does take off it goes to fast and can make a driver lose control. This car also shakes or vibrate when you accelerate to speeds of 60 to 65mph. Steering is a problem when car hesitate then takes off, this is when you can lose control. Passing and changing lanes can be a problem when acceleration is needed. This car can be very dangerous. There's nothing wrong with the speedometer, i guess it's the transmission or whatever part that controls the car take off speed. *tr

The car lunged ahead and steadily picked up speed. The car hit a lady walking with her groceries, then hit a parked vehicle and pushed it into another vehicle. The air bag never deployed. The brakes would not work. The only thing that made it stop was that it hit a large suv. My wife did not have time to fasten her seat belt, thus sustaining injuries. Uncontrollable Sudden Acceleration 3 times while I drove the car, it suddenly and rapidly accelerated. Eventually, the car crashed and was totaled. The first time was 3/31/25 when my wife and I went to the car wash. To exit the car wash, I put the car in drive and lightly applied the accelerator pedal and suddenly the car accelerated rapidly and made a loud noise. I immediately braked and the car went back to normal. Over 3 years nothing like this happened before. The 2nd time was only 8 days later. On 4/8/25, I was driving the car at moderate speed in the center lane of a large street and while changing from the middle lane to the right lane to prepare to turn right at the next street, the car started accelerating rapidly and to make a loud noise. Fortunately, I was able to brake and the car went back to normal. We went to the Toyota dealer the next day 4/9/25 and told our concerns to the service advisor and the shop foreman. They checked the car, including with a computer. The foreman and I both drove the car. He said they did not find any mechanical/electronic issues and the only explanation is that if I hit the cruise control (which I never use), as he saw my hand close to that button while I drove. He said to avoid the cruise control and it will be ok. They did not charge us for the visit. The third time was on 6/15/25 when we again went to the car wash. I was very careful as this was the same location as our first time. Just like before, I lightly applied the accelerator pedal and suddenly the car accelerated rapidly and made a loud noise. However, the acceleration was much more rapid than before and I was not able to brake in time and the car crashed into the pole of the car wash about 45 feet away. The airbags deployed and the car was totaled. We were pulled from the wreckage and ended in the emergency room. Luckily no one was seriously injured. Enclosures: My 4/8/25 text, 4/9/25 dealership visit paperwork, and photo after the crash on 6/15/25.

"takata recall" my brakes went out while driving on a city street, slowing down to make a right turn into a dirt road to get home. Instead i lost control of the steering wheel and ended up crashing into a ditch. My airbags inflated. Now my muffler sounds like its rattled and a strong smell of gasoline always occur when driving. I have no exterior damage due to the crash. Only internal and prior to this, my brake warning lights would come off and on. I was told that it just meant that my brake sensor had a glitch. Other than that my breaks worked just fine with no warning signs of them going out sooner.

In the process of backing the car out of the garage, with the car in reverse, application of the brakes had no affect on slowing the car. After about 69-80 feet (across the driveway, my lawn and my neighbor's lawn) it crashed into the neighbor's shed. There was $6000 damage to the car , some back pain and destruction of the shed.two months later, the same incident occurred but the car was stopped by putting it into first neutral gear and then park before any damage. Then when the vehicle was put in forward gear, the brakes would not stop the car until it was put in first, neutral and then park. Attempts by the dealer to reproduce this condition was unsuccessful and therefore could not be corrected.

At stop signs or traffic lights, the engine would rev considerably & then stop. As we approached our driveway, the car lurched forward, then stopped. We got to our garage-entry control box & the car lurched forward on our parking deck, going less than 5 mph, & we hit a brick wall. We then put the car in reverse & it lurched backwards so we stopped the car, turned it off & called the police. My husband, who was driving, sustained chest injuries (black & blue, injured sternum, mark on his collarbone from the seat belt not restraining him sufficiently, difficulty breathing/standing/dressing/walking - general pain & suffering) which weren't visible to the emts at the time & he didn't need to go to the hospital although his regular doctor advised him to see another at an emergency care center. I refused him moving it elsewhere as i didn't want to do further damage to the car or another vehicle while we waited for the police. I, as the passenger, was not affected at all physically. The car was towed to our dealership's service center where it's been sitting since 3/21/17 awaiting a toyota inspection on april 21st - why it should take so long is inconceivable as it's our only car!

The entire brake system became inoperative on my 2018 Toyota Camry on two separate occasions causing a near fatal accident and damaged to my property and to the property of the other driver on the road. The first incident occurred on the freeway while I was driving behind another vehicle. As my car approached the other vehicle, I press down on the brake pedal all the way but my car would not slow down or stop but continue to accelerate thus causing me to rear end the other car. My car gave no prior warning that the brake system was malfunctioning. I was deemed by the insurance company as the responsible party for the accident thus my insurance premium was increased. The second incident occurred when I was in a residential area approaching my driveway. The car again failed to stop when I pressed down on the brake pedal. The emergency hand brake did not work either. I had no choice but to shift the car into parking which cause me to hit the curve and only inches away from my garage door. The brake fluid under the hood of my car bursts thus leaking the fluid all over the street and my driveway. Both of these incidents caused my elderly mother and myself great emotional stress and post traumatic symptoms. Prior to this Toyota issued a recall on all 2018 to 2019 Toyota Camry for the potential brake failure. I had to towed my car to the Toyota dealership for repair. It has been over 3 months and Toyota has done nothing to remedy this problem. They claim the parts for the brakes are back order and that there is a shortage of parts everywhere. This is the only answer I get when I call them for an update. I have spoken to the service manager, the customer relation manager and the corporate office but none are willing to assists me to resolve this matter.

All i could see was out my rear window. I tried to steer the car to the side of the freeway but it stopped in the fast lane. All i could see where cars swerving to miss us. I didn't know if my hazards could be seen as i couldn't see my instrument panel. So i pumped the brakes hoping the lights were working and the cars coming could see them. At the same time, i thought the car was on fire because my throat and lungs were burning. My daughter was knocked unconscious. I couldn't move because of the seat belts. When she came to she called 911. The freeway was closed down. The police found no evidence of us being hit or us hitting anything. No report was issued. The airbags had to be cut to get us out. We were trapped in a car that we couldn't tell if it was on fire or not. If it was we wouldn't have gotten out! The car was deemed a total loss. I believe there was a short that may have caused the air bags to go off. Or the airbags just went off on their own. I do not know what the white light or deafening bang was. I can only call it an explosion.

2006 Camry

2006 solara was driven by my son who was found dead in a canal on 1/28/08 by a passerby. The car had the tendency to have the floor mat on the drivers side ride up, which i was used to as it was my car. Therefore, i suspect the floor mat rode up onto accelerator pedal causing car to be unable to stop without turning off the engine. The car was found upside down with the car in park with the keys removed in 4' of water with my only child laying face down in the water dead. Since the recall came after his death, the car had already been salvaged and not able to have proof to determine cause. *tr

My passenger and i experienced concussion syndrome along with muscle spasms in the neck, back, and ankle. We were taken by ambulance to the new britain general hospital where we were treated and released . We are both receiving follow-up medical care. *tr

2001 Camry

Petition i and my 5 year old son were on highway, when the engine burst and caught on fire of my toyota camry 2001 exl. We had done all the maintenance with toyota and all changes of the oil requirements on time. The last oil change was only 4 weeks prior the accident. We went through terrifying and very dangerous experience also lost 27,000 investments in the car. Toyota's engines have the sludge problems, but they decline any responsibilities. People should know about such dangerous problem before they can lose a loved one. I petition the agency for a recall, because of seriousness of failure. *nm
