I was recently told my a service center that the frame has great corrosion and is unsafe to drive. I am now aware of past warranty extensions for this matter but Toyota will offer nothing because for my year, this warranty coverage extension is expired. My year was also not part of the recent class action settlement with Toyota vehicles having rusted frames for later models (2004+). I'm left with a decent truck that is useless now. I don't understand why a rusted frame that could crack or break would not constitute a safety recall, which I understand does not expire like their well played warranty extension. It is evident my problem is what has been experienced by many others and just because their extended warranty has expired, does not mean the issue was not caused by their defective manufacturing. It is a matter of timing, and our safety. We had taken the truck for service as a Toyota dealer in late 2008, when the program was active, and they did not mention it and maybe there was no rust. Between 2008 and 2015 when it expired, service was not performed at a dealership and still nobody mentioned it. The truck has lived in NC until 2011 and Ohio (snow) from 2011 - 2018 and now back in NC. We had it at a Toyota dealership in 2019 and nothing mentioned. My husband was driving this truck on the freeway every week day for 50 miles round trip to work until last year. I was driving this truck within the past few weeks and was having service performed when my service center mentioned this and said I should not put any more money into it until a frame evaluation is conducted. I have not yet had the frame inspected by a frame shop or dealership as I attempted to ask Toyota pay for this to no avail. I'm currently awaiting a callback from a supervisor next Monday 11/14 after being denied any assistance by Toyota. It is well documented that trucks can last for several hundred thousand miles. A rusted frame at 167,000+ mi that can break at any time is a major safety concern.

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A BODY SHOP AND WAS INFORMED OF AN UNKNOWN RECALL REGARDING THE RUST ON THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CALLED MIKE JOHNSON'S HICKORY TOYOTA (LOCATED AT 435 US HIGHWAY 70 SE, HICKORY, NC 28602, 828-330-9538) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR FRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIR WAS ONCE COVERED UNDER A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM THAT ADVISED DEALERS TO COAT THE FRAME WITH A RUST COATING TO PREVENT RUST FROM FORMING. THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND CONFIRMED WHAT THE DEALER STATED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000. *LN*JB

DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE PASSENGER'S SIDE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE STRUCK THE PAVEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A PRIVATE RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT REACHED OUT TO VANN YORK TOYOTA (500 EASTCHESTER DR, HIGH POINT, NC 27262) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT LINKED THE FAILURE TO A LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 140,000.

AFTER RECEIVING A RECALL NOTICE FOR A RUSTED FRAME IN 2008 OUR 2000 TACOMA WAS INSPECTED AND SAID TO BE OK. RECENTLY THE VEHICLE WAS MAKING NOISE IN THE REAR END, SO WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC, WHO INFORMED US THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT RUST TO THE FRAME AND THE BACK SUSPENSION MOUNT WAS COMPLETELY DETACHED, LEAVING THE TRUCK UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. THE INITAL NOISE WAS NOTICED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT ON A HIGHWAY.

WE PURCHASED A TOYOTA TACOMA WITH EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM TOYOTA OF EASLEY IN AUGUST OF 2000. WHEN THE TRUCK HAD ABOUT 12000 MILES ON IT, THE FRONT TIRES WERE WEARING IRREGULARLY. I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THE FRONT END NEEDED ALIGNMENT SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THEM TO DO SO. SINCE THE FRONT TIRES BY THEN WERE WORN PRETTY BADLY, I ASKED THEM TO ROTATE THE TIRES. THEY WOULD NOT ROTATE THE TIRES UNDER WARRANTY, SO I PAID THEM TO ROTATE THE TIRES. THEY DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT REPLACING THE WORN TIRES. AFTER ABOUT ANOTHER 12000 MILES, THE FRONT TIRES HAVE WORN THE SAME WAY AGAIN. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID TO BRING IT IN. I TOLD THEM THAT ALIGNING THE FRONT END DID NOT FIX IT BEFORE AND AFTER ARGUING WITH THEM FOR SOME TIME, THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD CONTACT TECHNICAL SERVICE AND SEE WHAT MIGHT BE CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO CALL ME BACK AND LET ME KNOW WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE NOT CALLED. IT'S BEEN ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF. I HAVE CALLED THEM SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THEN AND EACH TIME WAS TOLD THEY HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING FROM TECHNICAL SERVICE YET. The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that he received a recall notification for an unknown safety recall. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the vehicle and informed the contact that the vehicle did not need the recall repair at the time. The contact stated upon taking the vehicle to the independent mechanic for a repair, he was informed that the entire subframe was corroded. The dealer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that they could not assist as the vehicle was not included in a recall related to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

THE UNKNOWN DEALER SPRAYED THE FRAME WITH AN UNDERCOAT AFTER INSURING THAT IT WAS NOT RUSTED. THE UNDERCOAT WAS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT FRAME FROM ANY FUTURE RUSTING. THE FRAME WAS NOT RUSTED PRIOR TO THE COATING BEING APPLIED. THE CONTACT BECAME AWARE THAT THE FRAME STARTED TO RUST WHILE WASHING THE VEHICLE AT UNDER THE REAR FENDER WELLS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SUBFRAME. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. Owned Toyota Tacoma since 2005...recently took vehicle for muffler repair and discovered my frame was rusted out and in an unsafe condition, when I contacted Toyota @ customer assistance center they advised me that jy vehicle was too old to be covered by ant warranty...they also stated that they had contacted me about the defective steel used on these trucks....I have no proof of any notification, nor any recall of such notice Trucks like mine are still on the road with no problems, NOT MINE.....defective steel, improper rust prevention and lack of notification has left me with a vehicle I cannot drive, sell or repair... My safety and others on the road have been put at risk I would like my truck to get fixed and or compensated for the loss Toyota should stand by my vehicle ( in which they used substandard defective steel) regardless of any time factor. Courts have already determined their negligence....my vehicle should be included in this settlement

I BROUGHT MY TACOMA TO MY MECHANIC FOR A POWER STEERING LEAK. MY MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT WHILE TRYING TO LIFT THE VEHICLE, THE FRAME STARTED TO CRUMBLE AS IT WAS COMPROMISED BY CORROSION. HE IMMEDIATELY LOWERED THE TRUCK AND DEEMED IT UNSAFE TO OPERATE. HE MENTIONED THAT THERE WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND A RECALL ON THE FRAMES AS THEY WERE PRONE TO CORROSION AND FAILURE. I THEN CONTACTED TOYOTA AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED AND THEY WOULD DO NOTHING FOR MY VEHICLE. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE POTENTIAL RISK OF FRAME FAILURE, NOR WAS I AWARE OF THE RECALL AND IT'S EXPIRATION. I NOW HAVE A TRUCK WITH ONLY 175K MILES THAT WAS WELL MAINTAINED, AND DUE TO TOYOTA'S POOR QUALITY STEEL IS NOW WORTHLESS. HOW TOYOTA CAN PLACE A LIMITATION ON A SERIOUS SAFETY RECALL IS BEYOND ME, BUT THAT IS WHAT THEY HAVE DONE.

DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH HEARD A LOUD EXPLODING SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE STALLED, BUT HE WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. THE HOOD WAS OPENED TO CHECK THE ENGINE. AND WHEN THE OIL FILTER WAS REMOVED, THE CONTACT DISCOVERED A HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE IN THE SIZE OF A QUARTER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER WOULD NOT INSPECT THE VEHICLE WITHOUT PAYMENT FIRST BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE COST. ENGINE SEIZURE AT 45MPH WITHOUT WARNING! I CHANGED THE OIL EVERY 3000 MILES. I OWN A 2000 TOYOTA TACOMA 4X4 WITH THE V-6 ENGINE IN QUESTION! THE TRUCK HAD 80,000 HIGH WAY MILES ON IT WHEN THE ENGINE SIEZED WITHOUT ANY WARNING! TOYOTA MORTOR CORP. SAID SORRY WE CANT HELP YOU. IT COST ME $5000.00 DOLLARS TO HAVE THE ENGINE REPLACED, AT LEAST I AM HAPPY TO SAY ITS BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN. FREQUENTLY, WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES AT ANY GIVEN TIME DURING A SINGLE TRIP (USUALLY AT SPEEDS OF 5 TO 25 MILES PER HOUR), THE BRAKE PEDAL FEELS AS IF IT IS SKIPPING, THERE IS A CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE, AND THE VEHICLE DOES NOT SLOW DOWN AS EXPECTED, UNTIL I PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES. AT THAT POINT, THE ABS LIGHT COMES ON AND THERE ARE NO MORE PROBLEMS BRAKING FOR THE REMAINDER OF THAT SINGLE TRIP. AT THE TIME OF SERVICE, I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE ABS AND THAT THERE WERE TWO PARTS WHICH NEED TO BE REPLACED: LEFT SIDE FRONT SPEED SENSOR AT A COST OF $255.43 ABS ACTUATOR AT A COST OF $1207 LABOR $240 SINCE THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 66K MILES AND THERE WAS NO CHANCE THAT DRIVER ERROR COULD HAVE CAUSED THESE PARTS TO BE FAULTY, I REQUESTED THE DEALER ELEVATE THIS PROBLEM THE TOYOTA AREA REPRESENTATIVE FOR COST COVERAGE OF REPAIRS. THIS REQUEST WAS DECLINED WITHOUT EXPLANATION. THE DEALER'S STAND WAS THAT THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. MY STAND IS THAT EACH TIME THIS HAPPENS, I CAN'T BE CERTAIN OF MY STOPPING DISTANCE WHICH MAKES MY VEHICLE VULNERABLE TO STRIKE A ANOTHER CAR IN THE REAR. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED, IT WAS EXTREMELY SCARY TO SAY THE LEAST. I WAS FORTUNATE TO NOT HAVE ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I RECEIVED A LETTER AROUND 2008 REGARDING FRAME ISSUES WITH MY 2000 TOYOTA TACOMA. TOOK IT TO METRO TOYOTA IN KALAMAZOO, MI TO INSPECT IT AND THEY SAID IT WAS OK. YEARS LATER, I SEE THAT THE FRAME ROTTED NEAR THE LEAF SPRING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE.

WHILE HAVING A TIRE REPAIRED, MECHANIC NOTICED A BROKEN SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNT. UPON HIS ATTEMPT TO REPAIR, HE FOUND SEVERE FRAME RUST, WITH INSUFFICIENT METAL REMAINING TO REATTACH THE MOUNT. AFTER AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRAME WAS UNREPAIRABLE, AND THAT SINCE THE "PUT IN SERVICE" DATE WAS FEB 2000, I WAS TOO LATE FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM. APPARENTLY, IF I HAD FOUND THE PROBLEM 5 MONTHS EARLIER, I WOULD HAVE BEEN ELIGIBLE FOR A BUY-BACK. AS THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND THE MANUFACTURER'S TIME LIMITATIONS. I AM THE SECOND OWNER, AND OTHER THAN THE FRAME RUST, THE TRUCK SHOWS NO CORROSION. I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICE OF FRAME RUST PROBLEMS, OR THE INSPECTION AND EXTENDED FRAME WARRANTY OFFER FROM TOYOTA. SINCE GETTING THE BAD NEWS, I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS SIMILAR STORIES ONLINE. WE FOUND THE RECALL AND WAS GIVEN A CASE MANAGER AND TOLD THAT IT WAS A WARRANTY AND IT EXPIRED AND THE NEXT DAY THE ARTICLE ON THE RECALL WAS NO LONGER ON THE INTERNET.

THE TRUCK HAS FRAME CORROSION THAT MAKES THE CAR ILLEGAL TO DRIVE. IN 2010, IT WAS RECALLED FOR THIS ISSUE. I BROUGHT IT IN TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN 2010 AND 2013 FOR THE WARRANTY. BASED ON A LETTER I RECEIVED FROM TOYOTA, TOYOTA WAS SUPPOSED TO BUY BACK THE VEHICLE IF CORROSION WAS PRESENT OR SPRAY CORROSIVE RESISTANT COMPOUNDS (CRCS) AT NO COST TO ME. THE DEALERSHIP DID NEITHER. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THEY SPRAYED CRCS BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT WE DISCUSSED AT THE DEALERSHIP. TURNS OUT THEY DID NOT SPRAY AND SIX MONTHS AFTER THE WARRANTY ENDED THE FRAME WAS DEEMED SO CORRODED BY AN OIL CHANGE MECHANIC AT AN INDEPENDENT BUSINESS, I CAN NO LONGER DRIVE THE VEHICLE. TOYOTA AND THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WILL NOT ADDRESS THE LETTER THEY SENT ME AND THE FACT THEY DID NOT SPRAY CRCS AS DISCUSSED. THE VEHICLE IS VERY UNSAFE, I DID WAS I WAS TOLD, AND THE DEALERSHIP IS NEGLIGENT IF FOLLOWING BINARY RULES OF THE WARRANTY--REPLACE THE VEHICLE OR SPRAY CRCS. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS "THEY HAD NO RESPONSIBILITY TO DO ANYTHING" BUT A LETTER I RECEIVED FROM TOYOTA SAYS DIFFERENTLY. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE YOU AWARE OF A PROBLEM I RECENTLY HAVE HAD WITH A 2000 TOYOTA TACOMA PICK-UP. I HAVE 15000 MILES ON THE TRUCK AND RECENTLY ON A LONG ROAD TRIP I RECEIVED A FLAT DUE TO A NAIL ON THE HIGHWAY. IN CHANGING THE TIRE I SNAPPED 2 LUG STUDS. NOW I HAVE OWNED TRUCK FOR 20 PLUS YEARS AND HAVE NEVER SNAPPED A LUG OFF A WHEEL. I HAD IT SERVICED AND WAS TOLD IT WAS DUE TO TOO MUCH TORQUE AND STILL FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE. I CANT IMAGINE THAT I COULD GIVE THIS THAT MUCH TORQUE WITH A TIRE IRON TO SNAP OFF THE STUDS. I FEEL IT IS POOR QUALITY STEEL OR A FAILURE IN THE STEEL DESIGN ITSELF. CHEMICAL REACTION OF SULFURIC ACID WITH PLATED METALS OF BRAKE CASING PRODUCED TOXIC FUMES THAT WERE INHALED OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME PRODUCING SEVERE FRONTAL SINUS PAIN, CONGESTION, BLEEDING, AND HEADACHE. THE BATTERY HOLD DOWN CLAMP WAS OVERTORQUE AT THE FACTORY AND RESULTED IN THE FRACTURE OF THE DELCO BATTERY CASING. SULFURIC ACID DRAINED OUT OF THE BATTERY CASING AND SPILLED ONTO THE FENDER WELL, DRIVER SIDE TIRE, BRAKE CASING,AND UNDER CARRIAGE. THE PLATED METAL SURFACES WERE DISOLOVED. I DROVE THE VEHICLE APPROX. 6 HOURS TO ST. LOUIS AND WAS FEELING ILL UPON ARRIVING.
