How to read a Toyota Tacoma VIN — every digit explained

Every Toyota Tacoma carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

FIG.02
1–3 · WMI1HG
4–8 · VDSCM826
9 · Check5
10 · YearR
11 · PlantA
12–17 · Serial004352
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Toyota and the country it was built in.
  • VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Tacoma.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
17 CHARS·SOURCE SAE / ISO 3779

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

Risk. Failure to warn of tire deflations is a non-compliance with fmvss 138 and could lead to tire failure increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. For the land cruiser, sequoia, tacoma and tundra vehicles, the dealer will re-calibrate the tire pressure monitoring system on affected vehicles and install an updated tire and loading information label at no charge. For the fj cruiser vehicles, the tpms cannot be reset so the electronic control unit (ecu) for the tpms will be replaced. Toyota is currently developing the remedy ecu. Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module14V168000

What's wrong. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.

Risk. If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.

Fix. Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota sent owners an interim notification letter in May 2014 to advise owners of the recall. Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. What's wrong. Equipment description: this recall is for trailer towing wire harness converters installed by dealers or for installation on 1999-2000 toyota tundra and tacoma vehicles. The connectors integrate the vehicle's tail lights, brake lights, and turn signal lights with those equipped on the trailer, are defective. Affected part numbers are: pt207-34000, pt207-34002, pt207-04981, and pt214-04985. In the tundra vehicles, the circuitry utilized in the converter was inadequate to properly manage vehicle and/or trailer-side voltage spikes. If the converter is exposed to a voltage spike, it may cause an electrical short or open circuit within the converter. In the tacoma vehicles, due to deficient waterproofing and improper installation location of the converter, which is mounted in the lower portion of the tailgate cavity of the vehicle, an electrical short circuit will occur if water enters the converter housing.

Risk. An electrical short or open circuit can cause a fault in the converter and a non-operational condition of the trailer lights. If the vehicle is driven without trailer lights, it may be difficult for other drivers to see the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. Dealers will notify the customers and install a redesigned trailer towing wire harness converter free of charge. Owner notification began august 27, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

2014 Tacoma

Tacoma truck parked and stationary. Passenger exited vehicle but the door could not be opened all the way because it was close to a wall. The sharp rough corner edge of the bottom rear of the front passenger door sliced a passengers leg as the leg was moved to clear the door.. Drivers side door is similar but not as tough or sharp as passengers bottom corner of the door. It has left a scar on the leg. On different occasions both front doors have scraped my leg twice on the drivers side door and my wife's leg twice on driver and passenger door especially when there is limited clearance from the door that is near a wall or other car. This happens on a quad cab because the front doors are cut with a straight edge and the metal is not rounded or smooth finish like the back doors. Toyota admits in a letter that the bottom rear corner passenger door is slightly rougher than the drivers side door where the injury might occur. Toyota will take no action.

2013 Tacoma

We hit black ice and spun flipped into a ditch onto the passenger side of the truck airbag deployed on the passenger side the airbag caught on fire catching the whole truck on fire.

2004 Tacoma

December 26, 2013- going east on warner rd. At 45 miles per hour from kyrene and warner. Minimal traffic on the road. At warner and bullmoose a car did not stop at the stop sign at bullmoose to pull out onto warner. I hit the camaro, t-boned him. My air bags did not go off, my seat belt tightened, then popped off of me at some point during the crash. I just know that when i stopped and pulled over my seat belt was off. That concerned me a lot. That was the first thing i noticed when i came to a stop! The gentleman that i hit said it was his fault and he had a broken rib, but other than that said he was okay. I hurt and was bruised across my shoulder blade, and chest. I had my toyota tacoma towed to power collision center that toyota uses. I went into to them and told them my concerns about the seat belt popping. They said they did not see anything wrong with it, that maybe my sweater was caught up in it. First of all, i was not wearing a sweater! And i am very strict about my seat belt and others in my vehicle that they are properly seat belted! At times the seat belt did not tighten when i applied the brakes. I think just to humor me they replaced the driver's seat belt. Then he said they get worn with being connected and unconnected many times. My question is why do we not know that we should replace our seat belts, like we do our tires. I am very concerned about my seat belts in my toyota tacoma. *tr

2020 Tacoma

Vehicle had a front/right collision with the trees on a road during the rainy evening. Vehicle was deemed a total loss by our car insurance company adjuster. The airbags have never deployed therefore there were serious injuries and fractures as a result of the impact. Why did the airbags not deploy? Was there a breaks or other safety malfunctioning?

2017 Tacoma

Takata inflators i was struck on my front left side . Every panal on the drivers side ws impacte side was impacted. I was traveling bout 40mph. I spun around and ended back innone of the air bags deployed a dranage ditch.i was driving in a state highway

2015 Tacoma

I recently bought a 2015 toyota tacoma and straight off the back i noticed that the tired were not in good condition under specific circumstances. If there were some loose dirt or gravel on the road the tire would not grip causing me to slip for a split second. Ignoring the warning signs of my split second slips here and there i decided to go out in the rain with 4 wheel drive on. I felt confident because i have had many tacoma's before and i trust toyota. Low and behold i hydroplaned on an empty highway and crashed into the wall at 60 mph completely totaling my truck. Baffled by the incident i recounted my steps to see if i was at fault. Two hands on the wheel, gps on my phone, no car in sight and i'm the only one on the road. A little puddle on the highway almost cost me my life. I still love toyota and i bought a 2016 tacoma but i will say do not trust the 2015 stock tacoma tires because it has no grip.

2011 Tacoma

This VIN number was totaled due to a bent frame after being rear ended on June 10th. I fear my insurance company (USAA) will attempt to commit fraud by not reporting the title as salvage.

2008 Tacoma

This toyota tacoma slid downgrade on black ice and there was no airbag deployment despite an end-for-end, backwards, downhill flip initiated at 40 mph, that caused the full weight of the vehicle to impact on the front bumper, dislocating all front bumper attachments from the front cross member of the vehicle's frame. This vehicle is at a salvage yard awaiting action by the insurance carrier... Updated 12/17/14 *bf

2006 Tacoma

Vehicle 2006 toyota tacoma with towing package factory installed. While loading a 450 lb motorcycle into the bed of a 2006 toyota tacoma, using a motorcycle ramp, the tailgate completely collapsed by bending into a u shape in the middle causing the motorcycle to come falling down and injury two persons that were loading the motorcycle. All weight limits were checked in the owner manual before loading and the same motorcycle had been loaded into 3 other trucks of same size before with no incidents. I believe that the tailgate of this particular vehicle is unsafe and someone could be seriously injured or death could have occurred in this situation. *tr

2004 Tacoma

There was nothing that led up to this event. I was just driving down the highway and the bracket that attaches the front axel of my truck to the frame just snapped off. This is a relatively new vehicle and has not seen too rough a road! It is quite pampered and well maintained. This is obviously a defect due to the many complaints of the exact thing happening. I searched online and discovered that i am not alone in this event as it seems to be it occurs quite frequently to (from what i hear), 2 wheel drive toyota tacoma's, that have installed a lift. I cannot imagine how many lives have been lost let alone how many accidents and injuries this has resulted in as you loose complete control of where the vehicle goes. And in some instances it also severs the brake line leaving the vehicle out of control with no brakes. I imagine that most crashes are not blamed on this due to the vehicle experiencing a large accident with impact to the front of the vehicle. And the bracket that holds the front axel to frame is mangled. Therefore, leaving one to believe that the accident caused the damage. When the fact is that the damage or defect if you will is what caused the accident which in turn damaged the vehicle, driver, passenger(s). Not to mention that accidents often involve other vehicles as well. It seems to be more prevalent on the driver's side so that usually means that the vehicle travels into oncoming traffic! Ie: head on collisions! How many survive a headon collision in a light duty truck? Few i would imagine. Well it almost became a reality for me as well as my passenger. We were just lucky that we live where we do and there was light traffic coming the opposite direction. I have heard that this happened to several others in the area and toyota tells them to go to "rocky's offroad", to get it fixed. No offer of explanation or reason why but that it seems to happen alot?! Doesn't that scream "manufacturer defect!" it's a *tr

2001 Tacoma

My 2001 toyota tacoma was involved in a accident. At the trial the accident reconstruction person said he could not understand why the crash happened that it looked like some one had yanked the wheel very hard. The trial was for manslaughter and it took place before the recall. The truck was never inspected by a mechanic. I feel this was the cause for the accident. *jb

2008 Tacoma

Problemas con la suspencion de la tacoma 2008, cuando vamos 4 personas en el vehiculo la caja choca con su limite y al hachar carga da un cantazo fuerte en la parte trasera de la guagua, empeorando la situacion. *tr

1999 Tacoma

The car in front of me stopped on the freeway and i was not able to stop in time. My front right hit his rear left, and my car spun 180 degrees into the lane next to the one i had been in and i was facing the oncoming traffic. My air bags did not deploy. *tr

2008 Tacoma

We have been having trouble with my 2008 toyota tacoma truck with the engine revving when we first start it up. We took it to the dealer. They said that this is "normal" last week we took it in due to a safety recall notice for sudden acceleration problems that toyota claims is due to floor mats. Dealer cut down the accelerator pedal, reprogrammed the computer control system, rotated the tires. Upon pulling out of the dealership the steering wheel vibrated (side to side) and car bucked (front to back) there were loud grinding and banging noises. Car pulled strongly to the left. I took my foot off of the accelerator . Instead of slowing, the engine suddenly revved up. Due to oncoming traffic on both sides of us, i focused on steering us out of trouble by keeping us in our lane. I did not apply brake. Truck suddenly lurched 90 degrees to left, jerked steering wheel our of my hands vehicle lurched into the oncoming traffic lane, whole front passenger side tire assembly came off and headed one way and the truck went the other. I expect the vehicle to be returned to me on 1/19/2023. The vehicle and components have not been inspected by any other individual at this time. There were no warning lights on prior to the surge. Unknown if any warning light came during the incident which I believe was two (2) seconds until impact with the post.

2019 Tacoma

I started to notice when you would stop at a red. Light and apply the brakes the pedal would slowly ease off like it had air in the brake line.this went on for a couple of months.i had a doctors appointment and when i got to the office and was pulling in the parking space i pressed the brake and it went to the floor so i pressed the second time and the same thing i didn't have time to try the third time because i hit the concrete wall and did approximately $5200 damages to my vehicle.the engine has a noise in engine compartment on the passenger side that sounds like a lifter making a noise that can be heard over the engine running.the brake problem i believe has to do with the booster. *tr

2017 Tacoma

2017 toyota tacoma, odom at 9250. No aftermarket add-ons: after 28 mile commute in 4x4, parked in driveway, plugged in factory installed block heater (@ 12 deg f), 1 hour later explosion heard (walls of house shook), blew hood off, up and against windshield. Multiple explosions heard, front tires & engine compartment on fire, flames 30 feet high, all windows blown out, entire cabin (extended cab) engulfed in flames, intense heat fused doors closed, melted aluminum vin plate & front license plate. All dashboard and steering column reduced to ashes. Dog kennel and all contents of cabin consumed in fire. Canopy on long bed and rear of vehicle intact due to quick arrival of fire department. No injuries only because people and dog had previously left vehicle when arriving at home. Owner had complained to toyota previously about engine smelling hot after all commutes, checked it at dealer previously to determine problem and they found nothing during exam. Vehicle was rescheduled to check for source of hot engine smell, at 10,000 mile checkup/oil change 4 days after fire occurred. No recalls or pending notices known at time of incident. Vehicle had starting problems even during warm weather. In town mpg showed on dashboard at 5-9.5 mpg, hwy at 16-19.5.

Can a Toyota Tacoma tow? Towing & payload

As a pickup, the Toyota Tacoma is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your Tacoma's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
