We purchased a 2001 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner from a used car lot in Omaha NE. We have had it for 3 months and recently had a mechanic look over the vehicle for repairs. The mechanic indicated the frame is rusted through and the truck is unsafe to drive. The mechanic indicated that there was a recall on the frames possibly, so we followed up with Toyota. Toyota told me that there is no frame recall, but instead they did a "Customer Support Program" in relation to the frame, but it had expired. Toyota told us there is nothing they can do for us. My concern is that Toyota has a known issue, a safety issue, concerning their vehicles but will not rectify it. I would like Toyota to be held liable for their substandard product, no matter how long it has been. A quick Google search about Toyota and recalls is that they are not good at reporting them to you, or their service centers are not good at making sure all recalls are taken care of, and I feel that this is something that needs to be investigated - and in my case, rectified.

The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously serviced under recall for corrosion underneath the vehicle. The contact became aware that there was corrosion underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and rust protection was sprayed on the corrosion but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 100,000. The vehicle was taken back to Toyota for service, which was outside the extended warranty and the tech was shown the gaping holes in the frame that had rusted through and at that point the contact was told the extended warranty had expired so they couldn't do anything. The frame has now rusted so bad that Toyota has deemed it unsafe as of 2 months ago when the tech looked at it so the contact reached out to Toyota corporate recall department but they refused to do anything about it as well.

FRAME OF THIS VEHICLE HAS RUSTED BEYOND BEING SAFE TO DRIVE. VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS VIRGINIA STATE INSPECTION. RUST IS DUE TO FACTORY MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT TOYOTA HAS ACKNOWLEDGED. I AM THE THIRD OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE AND HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING OF ANY TOYOTA REMEDIES TO THIS SITUATION. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE AND THEY REFUSE TO OFFER ANY HELP. THIS IS AN INHERIT FACTORY DEFECT AND AGE AND TIME SHOULD MAKE NO DIFFERENCE. THERE ARE MANY OF THESE VEHICLES STILL OPERATING ON THE HIGHWAYS WITH THIS DEFECT CREATING A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

BOX 259001 PLANO, TX 75025-9001 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: MY DAUGHTER [XXX] PURCHASED THE ABOVE TOYOTA TACOMA IN 2014. AMBER WAS NEVER NOTIFIED THERE WAS AN ISSUE FOR A RUST PROBLEM AND FRAME WITH CORROSION. PLEASE SEE PICTURE BELOW. AFTER A LENGTHY WAIT ON THE PHONE, THE PROBLEM WAS ADDRESSED BY THIS INFORMATION: THE FRAME ISSUES DO NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT. THIS TOYOTA EMPLOYEE STATED, SHE WAS SURPRISED THAT NO ONE THAT EVER WORKED ON THE TOYOTA TRUCK SAID THERE WAS AN ISSUE. THE CASE WORKER THAT SHE SPOKE TO WAS NOT HELPFUL WITH NO REGARD WHATSOEVER TO THE MONEY MY DAUGHTER HAD LOST ON THEIR WORTHLESS PRODUCT MUCH LESS HER SAFETY THAT WAS PUT AT RISK DRIVING THEIR PRODUCT WITH THE FAULTY FRAME THAT THEY USED. MY FAMILY/FRIENDS WILL NEVER BUY A TOYOTA PRODUCT AGAIN. BOTTOM LINE: MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN DRIVING IN A VEHICLE THAT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF HER AND MY LOVED ONES. The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, the contact swerved to the left to avoid another vehicle and the steering had stiff. The contact stated that the front driver’s side wheel then collapsed inside the wheel well. The contact lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle skidded off the highway and onto the right shoulder. The contact stated that the seat belt warning light then illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V225000 (Suspension). The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

I HAVE REPLACED THE LOWER BALL JOINTS FIVE TIMES IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS. THREE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND TWICE ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE. TWICE I WAS IN SOMEONE'S DRIVEWAY TWICE I WAS TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY AND ONCE I WAS TURNING A CORNER. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO HOWEVER I NEVER REAPONDED AT THE TIME. NOW WHEN I LOOK ON THIS WEBSITE IT SAYS THERE WAS NO RECALL SO I AM UNSURE HOW TO PROCEED.

INITIAL PROBLEM 12/08/2009: IN DECEMBER OF 2009, I DROPPED MY TOYOTA TACOMA OFF AT MY LOCAL DEALER (LEXINGTON TOYOTA, (MA) FOR A SERVICE APPOINTMENT. LEXINGTON TOYOTA CALLED ME AND STATED THAT MY 2001 TACOMA HAD A SERIOUS FRAME RUST PERFORATION PROBLEM. THEY STATED THAT THE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM WAS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FRAME AT NO COST TO ME AND THEY ASSIGNED A CASE NUMBER. THE TOTAL COST TO ME WHEN THE JOB WAS COMPLETED WAS $1,717.77 (SEE-ATTACHED INVOICE [XXX].) THE FRAME REPAIR INVOICE WAS DATED 12/22/2009. FAST FORWARD TO 12/10/2018: ON 12/10/2018, I BROUGHT MY 2001 TACOMA INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF LEXINGTON TOYOTA FOR SOME BRAKE WORK. LATER THAT DAY THEY CALLED AND SAID THAT MY FRAME HAD SELECTED ROT AND WOULD NOT PASS THE NEXT STATE INSPECTION. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT STATED THAT THEY HAD REVIEWED THE SITUATION WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO FOR ME. I EXPLAINED THAT THE FRAME HAD BEEN REPLACED IN DECEMBER OF 2009 AND THAT THE SERVICE ADVISOR ([XXX]) HAD STATED TO ME THAT THE NEW FRAME WAS WARRANTIED FOR FIFTEEN YEARS. I JOKING REPLIED THAT IT WOULD PROBABLY LAST LONGER THAN I WOULD. I GUESS I WAS WRONG. I HAVE ALL OF MY REPAIR WORK AND YEARLY STATE INSPECTION WORK DONE AT LEXINGTON (MA) TOYOTA. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS SITUATION WAS NOT IDENTIFIED EARLIER WHEN IT COULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH BEFORE GETTING TO ITS CURRENT STATE. I BELEIVE THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. - 2001 Toyota Tacoma New Replacement Frame Rusted, it is available for inspection. - The frame is rusted to the point you can push your finger through it, failure concern while driving. -The local Toyota dealership and corporate office, states the vehicle is not covered in any way. - At this time the vehicle has not been inspected due to dealership stating there are no recalls on the second frame that was installed in the 2001 Toyota Tacoma for the original rusting problem. This vehicle likely will not pass state inspection. - There are no warning devices for this problem. The rust/corrosion was located during an oil change.

2001 TACOMA. THE 15 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY IS NOT ENOUGH; IT SHOULD BE A MANDATORY RECALL/INSPECTION WITH NO TIME LIMITATIONS. FRAMES ARE VISIBLY RUSTING THROUGH AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES, BUT THE FRAMES ARE DEFECTIVE PRIOR TO THAT AND OWNERS DON'T REALIZE IT BECAUSE NO RECALL WAS EVER ISSUED AND ANY VISIBLE INSPECTION DOESN'T REVEAL THE PROBLEM. I KNOW NOW THAT MY FRAME WAS DEFECTIVE DURING THE WARRANTY PERIOD BUT IT DIDN'T BECOME 'VISIBLE' UNTIL AFTER 16 YEARS. TOYOTA HAS TRIED TO SWEEP THIS UNDER THE RUG BY DOING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE TO EASE THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE DRIVING ON LIFE-THREATENING FRAMES THAT DON'T EVEN REALIZE IT BECAUSE THE FRAME IS SOMETHING AN AVERAGE PERSON DOESN'T TEND TO CHECK? AN OFFICIAL 'RECALL' NOTICE WOULD GET THOSE TRUCKS IN THE SHOP FOR INSPECTION.

The complete chassis frame under the vehicle, contains a lot of rust and holes due to corrosion. Some years ago, a Toyota dealership asked me to bring the vehicle in to one of their dealerships, where an undercoating was painted on the frame surface. However, the coating is worn away and the rust is visible again and this time there are even more deterioration.

I BROUGHT MY 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA FOR AN INSPECTION IN JANUARY 2020 AND DISCOVERED THE FRAME WAS ROTTED AND IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I CONTACTED EMPIRE TOYOTA SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE CAMPAIGN TO FIX THIS ISSUE EXPIRED SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THIS FIXED. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THIS CAMPAIGN NOR WAS MY HUSBAND WHO WAS THE PREVIOUS OWNER. I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT MANY OTHER TACOMA OWNERS ARE IN THE SAME PREDICAMENT. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE FIX THAT I CANNOT AFFORD. TOYOTA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND MAKE THIS A RECALL TO BE FIXED REGARDLESS OF TIMEFRAME.

TAKATA RECALL. I REAR ENDED A VEHICLE DOING 30+ MPH WHICH IN TURN THAT VEHICLE HIT ANOTHER AND THAT VEHICLE HIT ANOTHER. I WAS CONCERNED THAT MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND I WOUND UP HITTING MY CHIN ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND LEFT ELBOW HIT THE WINDSHIELD. WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL FROM STRAIGHT AHEAD TO LEFT OR RIGHT, I EXPERIENCE DIFFICULTY TURNING THE WHEEL ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH THE TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. THE STEERING WHEEL DOES NOT RETURN TO CENTER WITHOUT EFFORT. THIS HAPPENS WHEN MOVING OR STANDING STILL AND SEEMS TO VARY IN INTENSITY. ONLINE RESEARCH INDICATES A DEFECTIVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT.

THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT BALL JOINT FAILED WHILE DRIVING AT 50 MPH ON A SMOOTH SURFACES STATE ROAD. THE WHEEL FELL OFF OF THE CONTROL ARM AND SENT MY VEHICLE SLIDING DOWN THE ROAD. PICTURES ARE ATTACHED. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED IN A SIMILAR RECALL OF 4X4 VEHICLES OF THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL. THE ACTION NUMBER OF THAT RECALL IS NHTSA#: EA 04024. I AM HOPING TO GET MY VIN ADDED AS AN AMENDMENT TO THEY RECALL TO FIX THE VEHICLE AND MAKE IT SAFE TO DRIVE. THANK YOU FOR THE HELP.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH AND EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST. THE VEHICLE WAS MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE CONTACT INSPECTED UNDER THE HOOD AND NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR WAS EMPTY. HE THEN DISPENSED POWER STEERING FLUID TO THE PROPER LEVEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE RACK AND PINION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY AN INDEPENDENT AUTO MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 215,000.

I WAS BACKING OUT OF A STORE IN SAN CARLOS MEXICO. I STARTED THE TRUCK, APPLIED THE BRAKE AND PUT THE TRUCK INTO REVERSE. THE TRUCK ACCELATED BACKWARD OUT OF CONTROL AND STRUCK A CEMENT POST IN THE PARKING LOT AND CAME TO A STOP. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO INCREASE IN RPMS. I TRIED TO PUT THE TRUCK INTO PARK. THE GEAR SHIFT MOVED AND THE TRUCK BEGAN TO ACCELERATE FORWARD. THE BRAKE WAS UNRESPONSIVE AND THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO INCREASE IN RPMS. THE TRUCK ACCELERATED FORWARD OUT OF CONTROL JUMPING A PARKING CURB AND CRASHED INTO THE FRONT OF THE STORE. THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THE FRONT PASSENGER SUSTAINED A FRACTURED FOOT. ONE OF THE REAR PASSENGERS SUFFERED A CONTUSION TO HER FOREHEAD. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE DONE TO THE FRONT END OF THE TRUCK AND DAMAGE DONE TO THE STORE FRONT. WHAT I FOUND WAS A VERY HOT TIRE WHICH HAD REMAINED INFLATED BUT HAD LOST APPROX. 75% OF THE TIRE TREAD CIRCUMFERENCE DOWN TO THE STEEL BELT. APPROX. 25% OF TREAD REMAINED WITH THE TIRE OF WHICH APPROX.10% REMAINED ATTACHED TO THE STEEL BELT. THE SITUATION DESCRIBED ALLOWED THE TIRE TO BECOME A ROTATING METAL EATING MACHINE, DOING CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE WHEEL WELL, TRUCK BED, SUSPENSION AND EXHAUST (3 INCH STAINLESS STEEL PIPE BENT TO 90 DEGREES). ONE OF THE TIRES BLEW UP ON ME WITHOUT ANY WARNIG ALL OVER SUDDENLY MY TRUCK WAS FISH TAILING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. I WAS VERY CLOSE TO CAUSE A COLLECTIVE ACCIDENT. I NOTICED MY 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA MAKING ODD NOISES WHILE DRIVING. I DECIDED TO HAVE MY MECHANIC TAKE A LOOK AT IT FROM THE BOTTOM OF TRUCK: HE SAW AND TOOK PICTURES OF THE OBSERVABLE EXTENSIVE RUSTED/CORROSION AND PERFORATED AREAS ON THE FRAME/CHASSIS OF THE TRUCK AND SAID IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO TAKE IT TO DEALERSHIP SINCE THERE HAS BEEN A SETTLEMENT LAWSUIT FOR DEFECTS ON TOYOTA TACOMA'S THAT WHERE NOT TREATED WELL ENOUGH WITH THE RUST INHIBITOR SPRAY. I TOOK MY TACOMA TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT ORIGINALLY AND THEY SAID EXACTLY WHAT MY MECHANIC HAD ALREADY TOLD ME ABOUT THE RUSTED AND PERFORATED AREAS ON THE FRAME/CHASSIS AND STATED THAT THE CHASSIS/FRAME HAS AN ADVANCED CORROSION/ RUST DAMAGES TO THE POINT OF THE FRAME BEING FRACTURED OR BROKEN IN HALF IF THE PROBLEM CONTINUES, WHEREAS IT'S VERY DANGEROUS TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE TRUCK. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THIS MANUFACTURER DEFECT ON THE RUSTY FRAMES AND NOW AM CONSIDERING FURTHER INTO HIRING AN ATTORNEY REGARDING MY 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA. I HAVE A 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA AND THE FRAME IS BROKEN IN TWO ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE TRUCK AND RUSTED IN TWO ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK IS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND I AM LEARNING THERE WAS A RECALL ON THESE TRUCKS FOR FAULTY FRAMES. I HAVE ALSO LEARNED THAT THEY STOPPED THE RECALL IN 2012 BEFORE I OWNED THE TRUCK. HOW IS THIS GOING TO HELP ME IF I BOUGHT THE TRUCK AFTER THE RECALL IS OVER BUT THE ISSUE JUST HAPPENED? I PAID TOO MUCH FOR THIS TRUCK TO ONLY GET TO USE IT FOR A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME BEFORE THE FRAME FELL APART. THIS IS A RECALL THAT SHOULD NEVER BE DISCONTINUED, IF I WAS NOT TOLD OF THIS PROBLEM BY MY MECHANIC SOMETHING BAD COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO MY FAMILY WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I AM UNSURE HOW THE FRAME BROKE BUT I WAS TOLD ABOUT IT AFTER I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC TO HAVE THE BRAKES WORKED ON. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA AND NOTICED IT NEEDED TO GO IN FOR A RECALL FOR THE SPARE TIRE BEING IN NEED OF REMOUNTING. I NOTICED THE FRAME RUST WAS BAD. AS IN FIST SIZE HOLES ALL DOWN THE FRAME. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE RECALL AND MENTIONED THE FRAME RUST AND THE RECALL ON THE FRAMES. I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULDNT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE RUST. IM NOW STUCK WITH A VERY UNSAFE TRUCK FOR ME AND MY CHILDREN TO BE IN AND A COMPANY THAT FLAT OUT MADE A MISTAKE AND WONT OWN UP TO IT. I LIVE IN VIRGINIA. THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL FOR INSPECTION OF THE TRUCK FRAME FOR RUST CORROSION. AT THE TIME VEHICLE HAD THE RECALL I WAS BEING TREATED FOR A MENTAL DISABILITY AND IN MENTAL HOSPITALS. I WAS NOT OF SOUND MIND OR JUDGMENT TO UNDERSTAND THE "RECALL NOTICE". WHILE HAVING OIL CHANGED BY THE TOYOTA DEALER THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK WAS NOTED TO HAVE HOLES IN THE FRAME CAUSED BY RUST. TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION HAS REFUSED TO REPLACE THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK HONORING THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH I PROVIDED THE NECESSARY INFORMATION FROM DOCTORS PROVIDING DOCUMENTATION OF MY ILLNESS AT THE TIME OF THE RECALL. ON MARCH 14, 2013, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR A SAFETY RECALL FOR RUST OF THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER; WHICH COULD FALL OFF CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE TOYOTA DEALER REPLACED THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER CONSISTING OF TWO METAL PLATES WITH FOUR BOLTS THAT WAS BOLTED TO A DEFECTIVE FRAME THAT HAS HOLES DUE TO CORROSION; ALSO, THEY REPLACED SUPPORTS THAT RUNS BETWEEN THE TWO FRAME RAILS; THEY DID NOT REPLACE THE CABLE NOR THE RUSTED PART THAT HOLDS THE WHEEL TO THE PREVIOUS ASSEMBLY PARTS. THIS HAS NOT FIXED THE ISSUE BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONLY REPLACED THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER PLATE ONTO A FRAME THAT HAS HOLES DUE TO RUST THAT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. I NEED THIS VEHICLE AS I AM ON DISABILITY AND LIMITED INCOME; I WANT THE FRAME REPLACED OR A NEW TRUCK WITH THE SAME OPTIONS AS I HAVE ON THE 2001 TACOMA. TOYOTA RECEIVED A 25 MILLION DOLLAR SETTLEMENT FROM DANA CORPORATION, SUPPLIER OF THE TACOMA TRUCK FRAMES, PROPER ANTIRUST PREVENTATIVE WAS NOT APPLIED TO PREVENT CORROSION, WHICH WAS A COST SAVING FOR ONE OR BOTH COMPANIES. FROM 1995 TO 2004 THE TACOMA TRUCKS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. BY REPLACING THE FRAME TOYOTA WOULD NOT BE LOSING ANY MONEY BECAUSE THEY GOT THEIR MONEY FROM DANA CORP SUPPLIER OF THE TACOMA FRAMES. *TR

MY WIFE RECENTLY HAD A WRECK, SHE WAS GOING 45 MPH, THE TRUCK WENT OFF THE ROAD, CROSSING OVER CENTER LINE, AFTER MAKING IMPACT WITH THE DIRT WITH THE FRONT END OF THE TRUCK, THE TRUCK LOST IT'S STEERING, FROM THERE THE TRUCK FLIPPED 5 TIMES ON IT'S SIDE, IT FINALLY CAME TO REST ON IT'S SIDE, 5 FEET AWAY FROM A HOUSE. SHE HAD TO BE CUT FROM THE TRUCK. HER L2 EXPLODED IN HER BACK, SHE'S NOW HAVING TO LEARN HOW TO WALK AGAIN AMONG OTHER THINGS FROM EXTREME NERVE DAMAGE. SHE JUST RECENTLY LEFT THE HOSPITAL/REHABILITATION FROM AN EXTENDED STAY. AFTER BEING DRIVEN ON THE HIGHWAY APPROXIMATELY 60 MILES, THE 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA TRUCK WAS BEING BACKED INTO THE DRIVEWAY WHEN STEERING SUDDENLY LOCKED. UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER WHEEL WAS NO LONGER ATTACHED TO THE CAR. THE LOWER BALL JOINT HAD FAILED. I DETERMINED THAT TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE MODEL AND YEAR (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V225000) FOR THIS ISSUE, WITH THE FOLLOWING CONSEQUENCE: THE LOWER BALL JOINT MAY SEPARATE FROM THE KNUCKLE CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR. IT SEEMS THAT OUR VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE FOR WHICH VEHICLES WERE RECALLED BY TOYOTA. HOWEVER, WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA, I WAS TOLD THAT OUR VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND THAT TOYOTA WAS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING. WE HAD TO SPEND THE MONEY AND TIME TO FIX THE FAILED BALL JOINT AND ARE CONSIDERING REPLACING THE DRIVER SIDE BALL JOINT PROPHYLACTICALLY AS WE NO LONGER TRUST THE WHEELS TO REMAIN ON OUR TRUCK. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A WHEEL COME OFF A CAR. IF THE WHEEL HAD DISENGAGED FROM OUR CAR 2 MINUTES PRIOR, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE CONSEQUENCES COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERE. THERE IS 'PLAY' IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THERE IS A RECALL AND A TSB FROM TOYOTA FOR THIS YEAR AND MODEL TRUCK FOR 'WORN LOWER BALL JOINTS'. OUR DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING OUR TOYOTA PICK-UP WHEN SHE SMELLED A GAS ODER. SHE IMMEDIATLY PULLED OVER AND CALLED HER MOTHER. HER MOTHER INSISTED THAT SHE COME HOME IMMEDIATLY. FORTUNATELY SHE WAS NOT FAR FROM HOME. UPON HER ARRIVAL AT HOME DAD WENT OUTSIDE TO SEE WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM. OUR NEIGHBOR CAME OVER AND ASSISTED IN HELPING PIN POINT THE PROBLEM. THERE WAS NOT JUST A DRIP BUT A HUGE PUDDLE OF GAS UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK. WE DISCOVERED A RUPTURED FUEL HOSE COMING FROM THE GAS TANK. IT APPEARS THAT THE PLASTIC TAB HOLDING THE HOSE IN PLACE CHAFFED A HOLE IN IT. I IMMEDIATLY CAME INSIDE AND DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND ALSO CALLED SOME LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS. WHAT I DISCOVERED WAS THAT TOYOTA DID HAVE A RECALL ON A HOSE ON THIS VEHICLE BUT IT WAS ANOTHER HOSE IN ANOTHER LOCATION. AT THAT POINT I ORDERED A TOYOTA REPLACEMENT GAS HOSE FROM OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP. AFTER WAITING A WEEK FOR A HOSE TO BE SHIPPED, I PICKED UP THE PART AND INSTALLED IT MYSELF EASILY. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED AND AND NO OTHER PROBLEM SINCE. I AM A TRUE TOYOTA FAN AND PRESENTLY OWN TWO. TOYOTAS HAS BEEN IN OUR FAMILY FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS. I TYPICALLY DO NOT COMPLAIN BUT, DUE TO ALL OF THE PUBLICITY OF TOYOTA'S SAFETY PROBLEMS I FEEL IT NECESSARY TO REPORT THIS. YES, IT WAS AN INCONVENIENCE, BUT MY REAL CONCERN IS THAT THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE. AFTER A MUFFLER SHOP POINTED OUT SERIOUS HOLES IN THE FRAME OF MY 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA (WITH 174,000 MILES), I CONTACTED KINGS TOYOTA AND TOYOTA MANUFACTURING. THEY SAID THE TRUCK WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I TOOK IT TO HAMILTON BODY SHOP AND THEY SAID THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE LIFE OF THE TRUCK.I CONTACTED PERFORMANCE TOYOTA WITH MY VIN # AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL IN THEIR DATA BANK. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE TRUCK IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK FRAME INSPECTED AT KINGS TOYOTA TWICE IN THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS AND THEY SAID THE FRAME WAS OK AT THAT TIME. FRAME RECALL: WHEN I RECEIVED NOTICE OF THIS RECALL I TOOK IT TO A DEALER IN SLC, UT AND HAD IT CHECKED ON 9/22/08. I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS FINE AND THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO IT. NOW 8 YEARS LATER, MY TRUCK HAS TURNED INTO A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE THE FRAME IS SO RUSTED OUT, I CAN'T EVEN GET MY BRAKE LINE THAT RECENTLY BROKE REPAIRED. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS PARTICULAR RECALL EXPIRED IN 2014. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW A RECALL CAN EXPIRE. NOR DO I UNDERSTAND THAT IF MY FRAME WAS FINE IN 2008, HOW IT COULD HAVE RUSTED AWAY TO THIS EXTENT SO QUICKLY. THE STATE OF THE CURRENT RUST WAS POINTED OUT TO ME IN 2016. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND WAS ALERTED TO THE FRAME CORROSION. I CAN ACTUALLY PUSH MY FINGER THROUGH THE RUST AND FRAME, HOLES ARE VISIBLE IN THE FRAME. THE TRUCK IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND I FEAR OF SAFETY FOR MY FAMILY. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT THE VOLUNTARY BUYBACK PROGRAM FOR FIXING THIS WAS EXPIRED. I AM NOW LEFT WITH AN IMMACULATELY CLEAN CAR IN PRISTINE SHAPE THAT CANNOT BE DRIVEN AND I AM LEERY OF EVEN SELLING TO SOMEONE ELSE REGARDLESS OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE FRAME. REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM ARE POPPING UP ALL OVER AND IT NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH AS A SERIOUS MATTER AND SUBJECT TO SAFETY RECALL. THE IN MODESTO CA AGREED THAT THE TRUCK HAD THE WRONG LUGS ON IT BUT SAID THE WHEELS WAS PROBABLY OK TO USE AS LONG AS THEY HAD THE PROPER LUG NUTS ON THEM. I CALLED TOYOTA BACK AND ASK THEM TO MAKE THE TRUCK RIGHT AND THAT I WAS QUOTED $341.49 FOR CORRECT PARTS AT MODESTO, CA DEALERSHIP. TOYOTA TOLD ME THEIRS NOT ENOUGH HISTORY ON THE TRUCK OF DEALERS MAINTAINING IT AND WITH THE AGE OF THE TRUCK THEY WASN'T WILLING TO DO ANYTHING.MY FAMILY AND I HAVING BEEN DRIVING THIS TRUCK FOR YEARS AND COULD HAVE HAD A TIRE COME OFF WITH THE WRONG LUG NUTS. I FREQUENTLY CHECK THE STABILITY OF THE SPARE TIRE THAT IS STORED ON THE UNDERSIDE EXTERIOR OF THE BED. RECENTLY I NOTICED THAT THE TIRE WAS LOOSE AND MOVING BACK AND FORTH. THIS PROMPTED ME TO LOWER THE TIRE BY USING THE PROVIDED CRANK HANDLE. AFTER IT WAS LOWERED TO THE GROUND I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THAT THE RETAINING BRACKET AND CABLE SPRING WERE SEVERELY RUSTED. I FELT THAT THIS COULD POSE A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD TO ME WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY IF THAT BRACKET FAILS. IT COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER AND THE TIRE TO FLY OFF AND CAUSE DANGER TO OTHER MOTORISTS. I PROMPTLY REMOVED THE SPARE TIRE FROM THE VEHICLE AND WENT TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER. AFTER WE SEARCHED FOR REPLACEMENT PART ON TOYOTA DEALERS' WEBSITES, THEY SHOWED "THIS PRODUCT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE." OUR SHOP SEARCHED AND WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA DEALERS THE SAME THING. I CONTACTED DEALERS AND THEY SAID NOTHING THEY COULD DO BUT TO CONTACT TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA IN PLANO, TEXAS. WE ALONG WITH OUR SHOP SEARCHED FOR USED/RECYCLED PART ACROSS AMERICA. WE FOUND ONE FROM OREGON BUT IT DID NOT WORK AFTER INSTALLATION. MARCH 17, 2020, WE CONTACTED TOYOTA IN PLANO, TEXAS, WITH A LETTER TO CHRIS NIELSEN, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF PRODUCTS SUPPORT & CHIEF QUALITY OFFICER, ABOUT THIS ABS CONTROL UNIT WITH A "SAFETY ISSUE" AS MY FAMILY AND 10 OF THOUSANDS OF OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS WHO HAD STUCK OR HAVE BEEN STUCK WITH THIS "SAFETY ISSUE." TOYOTA RESPONDED MARCH 27, 30, 31, APRIL 6, 8, BUT REFUSED TO ADDRESS THE "SAFETY ISSUE." FINALLY, ON APRIL 9, TOYOTA SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. WHEN I ASKED IF WE, ALONG WITH THOUSAND OF OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS ARE STUCK WITH THIS "SAFETY ISSUE"? TOYOTA RESPONDED BY SAYING WE GOT THERE PHONE NUMBER AND ADDRESS IF WE HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS. THE BRAKES FAILED DUE TO LOSS OF HYDRAULIC FLUID. THIS OCCURRED SUDDENLY. THE STEEL HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINE HAS CORRODED AND RUPTURED WITHIN AN INCH OF WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE BRAKE BIAS VALVE NEAR THE LEFT REAR WHEEL. UPON INSPECTION OF THE AREA AROUND THE BRAKE BIAS VALVE, THE BIAS VALVE ITSELF, THE BOLTS SECURING THE BIAS VALVE, AND THE BRAKE LINES SEVERE CORROSION WAS OBSERVED. THE INSPECTOR WHO HAS 35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WORKING ON TOYOTAS REGARDS THIS CORROSION AS ABNORMAL FOR ANY VEHICLE OF THIS AGE. THE VEHICLE'S FRAME WAS COATED WITH A SUBSTANCE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO PREVENT CORROSION UNDER A TOYOTA RECALL IN OCT. 2010. THIS SUBSTANCE WAS SPRAYED ON THE BRAKE LINE WHICH RUPTURED AS WELL. THE INSPECTOR FEELS THAT THE COATING IS ACTUALLY ACCELERATING THE CORROSION. THE INSPECTOR OBSERVED THE COATING PEALING OFF OF THE TRUCK'S FRAME IN LARGE SHEETS. *TR

I HAD MADE A LEFT TURN ONTO FREEWAY ENTRANCE RAMP, STARTED ACCELERATING TO GET UP TO SPEED. AT APPROXIMATELY 30MPH THERE WAS A LOUD BANG/POP NOISE AND THE VEHICLE FRONT LEFT DROPPED DOWN. I HUNG ON TO TRY AND KEEP VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL AS IT TOOK AN SHARP LEFT HAND TURN TOWARDS A POLE. EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR I WAS ABLE TO SOME HOW GET THE VEHICLE STOPPED BEFORE THE PASSENGER SIDE HIT THE POLE WHERE MY 1 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS RIDING. I HAD THE TRUCK CHECKED FOR RECALLS IN LATE 2008 WHEN I PURCHASED IT. THE REPORT SAID BALL JOINT RECALL WAS VIN # SPECIFIC AND THAT THIS TRUCK WAS NOT IN THE VIN RANGE. AFTER THE INCIDENT HAPPENED, I CALLED TOYOTA HOTLINE FOR ASSISTANCE AND EVEN THOUGH THIS IS THE SAME CONDITION, AND PART THAT IS FAILING ON THE VEHICLES IN RANGE THEY SAID, "THAT SENSE THE RECALL IS VIN SPECIFIC, THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO, AND WE CAN'T JUST ADD A VEHICLE TO THE RECALL". SO, NOW I'M STUCK WITH A WRECKED VEHICLE, BUT VERY THANKFUL THAT I DIDN'T HIT THE POLE WHERE MY DAUGHTER WAS SITTING. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA SR 5 EXTENDED CAB. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 3-4 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE DROVE OVER A ROAD BUMP AND THE LOWER BALL JOINT PROCEEDED TO DETACHED FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE. EMERGENCY BRAKE FAILURE, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON MY 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA HAS SEIZED FOR A SECOND TIME. WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SEIZED IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO OPERATE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE DESIGN OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM ALLOWS THE SYSTEM TO SEIZE DUE TO CORROSION AT THE LOCATION WHERE THE ACTUATING LEVER MEETS THE MOUNTING BLOCK. I HAVE PREVIOUSLY HAD THIS REPAIRED BY THE TOYOTA DEALER AT A COST OF $350 (2 MOUNTING BLOCKS@ $90.00 EACH AND 1 HOUR LABOR PER SIDE TO REMOVE AND REPLACE MOUNTING BLOCKS AND ACTUATING LEVER(S). THE PROTECTIVE RUBBER BOOT WHICH SHOULD PROTECT THE JOINT BETWEEN THE LEVER AND MOUNTING BLOCK IS LOCATED APPROX 1/8" FROM THE JOINT, WHICH PROVIDES NO MEANINGFUL PROTECTION FROM WATER AND SALT I.E. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA TACOMA. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER TO INSPECT THE FRAME, WHICH SHE HAD OBSERVED WAS SLIGHTLY RUSTED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS THOROUGHLY RUSTED AND WOULD NOT ALLOW HER TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE OFF OF THE LOT. THE ENTIRE FRAME WAS REPLACED UNDER THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT FOR FRAME RUST PERFORATION ON MODEL TRUCKS IN SEVERE COLD CLIMATE AREAS WITH HIGH ROAD SALT USE (NHTSA ITEM NUMBER : 10027968: SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER : TCS-08-018). AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE, SHE NOTICED BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM THE EXHAUST, THE VEHICLE WAS USING MORE GAS THAN BEFORE AND SHE COULD LITERALLY WATCH THE FUEL GAUGE MOVING CLOSER TO EMPTY AS SHE PROCEEDED. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT IDLE PROPERLY AND WAS EXHIBITING A "BUCKING" GESTURE AS IF IT WAS NOT GETTING ENOUGH FUEL. WHILE INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, A PERSONAL MECHANIC NOTICED THAT THE 02 SENSOR WAS HANGING FROM THE VEHICLE AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO EXHIBIT THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY STATED THE SENSOR WAS IN THE SAME PLACE AS WHEN SHE FIRST BROUGHT THE VEHICLE. NO FURTHER REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE.
