Transmission is failing, fluid was black and burnt at 35k miles (dealer did not provide a large enough sample to allow for testing the fluid because I didn't specify the amount I needed), and vehicle is not throwing a CEL or MIL so therefore Toyota says that there is no defect. Fluid change did improve the functioning, but it did not correct the problem. Transmission failures are a known problem on numerous Toyota vehicles using an A series transmission. My vehicle has done this and progressively worsened since it had roughly 500 miles on it. Dealership originally refused to document my complaints in their system and Toyota Customer Care's assistance has been minimal at best. My vehicle suffers from numerous of the same complaints that are listed under the 2024 model Tacoma. Before servicing the transmission fluid the vehicle would occasionally have an extremely hard shift around 55mph that would result in the truck spinning tires on the interstate which shouldn't even be possible. I actually managed to capture a short video of the dash as it was doing this once and even sent it to Toyota but they said if they can't replicate it then it doesn't count. I think there needs to be an investigation into Toyota's transmission issues as well as someone should investigate their programming for MIL/CEL activation parameters as their vehicles are alerting the driver's to a problem until there is a complete and total failure which could leave the driver in an unnecessary and dangerous situation that could possibly be avoided if the driver was informed when the "Fail-safe" features activate instead of when they're unable to compensate. I am unable to load the video through this computer; however, I can upload the video from my phone upon request.

The contact owned a 2022 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while her son was driving at an undisclosed speed, upon reaching his destination, shifting the vehicle into the park position, and exiting, the vehicle began to roll away. The driver was unable to stop the vehicle, and as a result, the vehicle rolled off the roadway, coming to a complete stop at the bottom of a 25-foot embankment. The vehicle's location required specialized recovery, and upon extracting the vehicle, the recovery specialist confirmed that the shifter was shifted into the park position. All air bags were deployed. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a towed yard and deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A police report was not filed, and no injuries were reported. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 41,000.

Transmission pops out of 2nd gear everyday after setting on level ground. I have questioned Toyota about the fluid levels, which they say its a sealed unit and cant be checked. It takes about 20 feet before the transmission rengages. It only happens when the transmission temperature is cold, then does not happen again. This can leave me without any power. Toyota has checked the vehicle twice and cannot duplicate the issue. The issue started shortly after i bought the vehicle.

When stopped on an hill and depressing the throttle lightly the "Hill Assist" disengages and allows the vehicle to roll backwards. The 1st time this occurred I had a trailer in drive and it rolled backwards breaking a taillight in a jack-knife situation. I took the vehicle to my dealership were the vehicle was checked and no problem was found. They refused to replaced the tail light as no problem was found. The 2nd time was in congested traffic moving at a snails pace. On a steep hill stop and start traffic. When I slowly applied throttle the vehicle "Hill Assist" disengaged and the vehicle rolled backwards. Appling more throttle finally caused the transmission to engage. Now knowing how this occurred I was able to recreate again and again. I again took the vehicle to my dealership even taking my salesman and the service technician on test drives showing them the safety concern. I was again told that no problems were found. I then took my wife on a test ride to show her how the vehicle could roll backwards on a hill in stop and go traffic. During this drive once the vehicle not only started to roll backwards but when the throttle was depressed more the vehicle stalled and continued to roll backwards until i moved my foot from the throttle to the brake. As the engine was off additional effort was required in depressing the brake. The steering was also harder to turn. Had I rolled an additional 12 feet I would have backed into a retaining wall on the passenger side. My wife has decided to take a different routes to avoid hills that have stop and go traffic. I called Toyota filed case # 220407001182 which they declined to repair the taillight and told me that the vehicle operated as designed and no problems were found. They did tell me if I felt the vehicle was unsafe not to drive it. They indicated they would not provide documentation on the decision. Owners manual doesn't indicate vehicle can roll backwards as "Hill Assist" disengages. Safety Issue

5 complaints
The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, another vehicle failed to stop at a red light. Consequently, the other vehicle collided with the vehicle on the passenger's side door and front quarter panel, sending the vehicle careening and nearly tipping over before coming to a complete stop. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who submitted a request to the manufacturer to have an engineer inspect the vehicle. The engineer reviewed the incident recorder and informed the contact that the air bags did not deploy because the occupancy sensor did not detect a passenger. The contact disputed the findings, stating that her son was occupying the passenger seat and had been wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The contact was transported to an area hospital by EMT and treated for back pain. She later followed up with her primary care physician and neurosurgeon who located a tear just below where a previous surgery was performed stating that the tear was not present as of her most recent evaluation before the accident. The contact stated that she previously had back surgery to repair and/or remove discs L3, L4, and L5. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The contact was later informed by the manufacturer that there was no data from the incident recorder on the date of the collision. The failure mileage was 24,000.

In March 2022 brake master cylinder failed and was replaced. Today March 14, 2024 notified by dealer that brake master cylinder has gone out again. Toyota certified dealer working with Toyota on fixing. This creates a major safety issue with braking system.

Brakes are soft and mushy feeling. Very long stopping distance. Brakes to one side or the other when you brake hard. Brakes locked up going down hill. Dealership aware and replacing brake booster. Almost have been in several accidents. But all near misses
May 16, 2023
(HSA/Auto Vehicle Hold) Upon backing out of a heated garage onto a flat, lightly snow-covered asphalt driveway, a light to medium brake apply to test out surface conditions was done, and little to no sliding was observed. Upon reaching a conclusion that it was likely safe to proceed, vehicle was shifted into reverse and upon nearing the crest of a 14% grade on a residential driveway (asphalt), brakes were lightly applied (similar pedal force to the "test"), then released once grade was almost crested. The vehicle had been shifted into neutral and clutch was released prior to applying the brakes. It seemed as if the brake pressure from the light apply was not released, and wheels remained locked causing loss of control. ABS did not activate, and steering input had little/no effect. Vehicle slid off of driving surface and struck a tree, causing damage to rear bumper, tailgate, and rear left quarter panel (no visible frame damage). Upon safely bringing the vehicle back onto the driveway surface (bottom of driveway, ~5-9% grade), a second test to see if brake pressure was trapped was performed. The vehicle was allowed to roll to ~3mph, same light pedal force as before was applied and the brake pedal was released (in neutral with clutch released). The vehicle skidded to a stop with no signs of ABS or stability control activation (no lamps, etc), and about 2s later, a clicking sound was heard from the engine bay and the vehicle began rolling freely again with foot still off the pedal. No warning lamps ever illuminated, nor were any messages or functional notifications. No throttle input was given after the vehicle was shifted out of reverse.

Truck has 3900 miles on it. From day 1, the brakes almost go down to the floor when sitting at a stop. If you press the brakes normally during driving, they seem to be okay, but if you sit at a stop, you can practically push the pedal to the floor. The only time I have ever experienced this is when you have a leak in the system or one of the brake components, such as the master cylinder, has failed. I spoke to one Toyota dealer and they said that there is a seal in the master cylinder that goes bad. I took my truck to my local Toyota dealer yesterday and they said that this was normal and that they have had other customers report the same issue. While I believe the dealer is going off the information that they have, I believe there is something truly wrong with these Tacoma brakes. I am a little terrified to drive this truck because of what could happen if I have to suddenly brake hard. I work on cars as a hobby and have done many brake repairs over the years and I have never encountered a situation like this one. The pedal is too spongy and should never go near the floor. It's unsettling, especially to those that work on cars and know how brakes are to feel and function. I think this issue needs to be investigated and Toyota needs to come forward and admit that there is an issue with the Tacoma brakes or post a bulletin assuring customers that this is normal operation. The dealers should not have to keep telling people that the brakes are OK.
Oct 26, 2022
When starting especially in the morning my brake pedal is very mushy and goes very near the floor. When driving and have to break it sometimes goes down a little too far. The dealer said this was normal. I do not feel it is safe. I've never had a vehicle do this. If this is safe I don't want it.

THERE IS A LARGE SCREEN IN THE VEHICLE AND THE OEM SENDS MESSAGES TO ME THAT ARE EXTREMELY DISTRACTING AND HAZARDOUS AS THE ONE I RECENTLY RECEIVED WAS RECALL NOTICE TELLING ME THAT THE REAR AXEL COULD FALL OFF THE CAR. I RECEIVED THIS "TEXT" WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT 65 MPH AND IT SCARED ME AND GAVE ME A PANIC ATTACK. IT IS ILLEGAL FOR ME AS A DRIVER TO TEXT AND DRIVE YET IT SEEMS PERFECTLY OK FOR THE OEM TO TEXT ME WHILE I AM DRIVING AND FOCES ME TO READ THEIR MESSAGE. THIS IS A FLAGRANT AND COMPLETELY OBVIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. WHY THE ENGINEERS AT TOYOTA WERE NOT SMART ENOUGH TO REALIZ THIS IS A PREVENTABLE SAFETY HAZARD IS SHOCKING! iT IS ALSO SHOCKING AT THE FEDERAL REGULATORS ARE NOT TAKING ACTION WITHOUT PRODDING FROM A CONSUMER. PLEASE FIX THIS SAFETY HAZARD AS IN ADDITION TO THE STUPID TEXT I ALSO RECEIVED A HUGE YELLOW HAZARD SIGN THAT BLOCKED MY VIEW OF MY SPEDOMETER SO THERE ARE TWO HAZARDS THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. I URGE YOU TO DO A RECALL OF THESE ISSUES WITH MY TACOMA TRUCK AND DO NOT ALLOW THE OEM TO COMMUNICATE THESE RECALLS TO ME ON MY VEHICLES SCREENS BUT RATHER CONTACT THE OWNER VIA EMAIL, PHONE CALL AND PUT AN IMMEDIATE STOP TO ALL THE DANGEROUS MESSAGING THE OEM USES. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS MATTER AND I AM CONCERNED A DRIVER LIKE ME COULD BE SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED WHILE DRIVING.0

Sunroof spontaneously shattered while driving. This was an open freeway with no other vehicles within 1/4 mile ahead and there were no bridges or overpasses. This is a newer vehicle that had less than 5,000 miles on it. Sunny day with temperature around 75 degrees, windows were up with the A/C set to 70 degrees.

Our nonprofit agency raised funds to purchase a brand new $57,000 Tacoma for our food bank deliveries and when it was shipped to Molokai from Oahu, the air conditioner does not work. With the current heat wave, it is a danger! I called the sales dept, who referred me to management, who referred me to customer care who referred me to service dept who referred me to customer care again who referred me to sales. I called 7 different entities...an endless loop. NO ONE will help us. There is no "authorized " Toyota dealer on our island and it will cost me $1000+ to ship it to Honolulu, just to have someone tell us what’s wrong. I don't even believe this is the way the mission and vision of Toyota is carried out. The way we have been treated and devalued as a cash paying customer is beyond ethical. As a customer who just did massive fundraising to make a cash purchase for our non-profit agency of a once in a life time vehicle, I don't think I should have been disrespected, devalued, ignored or told to pay to ship the truck back at an expense of $1000+ to the agency. ITS A NEW TRUCK!!!!!! The air conditioner does not work at all. It blows hot air. The vehicle has 23 miles on the Odometer and to me, that is a new truck that should have worked. However, I realize also, things can be defective, that is why there is a warranty. But we should not have to pay for the shipping, to have a mechanic on Oahu look at it. We have plenty of mechanics on our island, but no "authorized" dealer. I offered to pay for the Toyota mechanic to fly over as that would be cheaper, but no one agreed to doing that. I offered the services of certified mechanics here on island to fix it and submit the bill to Toyota but this too was denied. I don't see how this behavior is in alignment with the vision and guiding principles of the Toyota company's mission as I read it online. I am completely shocked at the callous way I was treated and how NO ONE will assist beyond telling me to call someone else.

I have a 2022 white Toyota Tacoma trd4x4. The paint is chipping in the inside fender on the left side. I did some research and looks like there was a recall for this very issue and that Toyota was reimbursing for the repairs. I called Toyota today and they said that I’m vin doesn’t fall in that recall. A vehicle that is less that 3 years old new shouldn’t have the paint chipping. I don’t drive the vehicle much and don’t use it in extreme conditions. They refused to help and stated I’m out of warranty. The recall was for the same issue I am having on all white tacomas on the inner fender and window areas. They didn’t want to help because my white is not the same code. But thought it was funny because it’s the same issue, same color and defective in the same place. On top of that, paint shouldn’t chip in 3 years from new to now when the vehicle has been garage kept and has only 20k miles. I would really appreciate you guys opening an investigation on this please. Thank you!

My 2022 Tacoma has 1200 miles on it. While turning a corner I slowed down to make the turn when I pushed on the pedal to speed back up there was no response from the engine. It was dark outside and my dash lit up like the key was turned off. I kind of panicked and began pumping the pedal thinking I was out of gas. The fuel gage showed 3/4 an after 3 or 4 seconds it started back up. A week or so before I was at a red light when it turned green I tried to accelerate, the engine hesitated again like it was out of gas. I pumped the pedal but no response. After a few seconds it took off like a jet across the intersection and my foot was barely touching the pedal. Also while driving around 40-50 mph it feels like a stick shift vehicle that needs to be down shifted in a lower gear as there is a chunging feel which I think the transmission can't decide what gear to use. At those speeds it goes away if I manually move the shifter out of D into 4 or 5. Then It runs smooth. I took it to a Toyota Dealer near my house on 1/3/2023 They said they could not duplicate the problem. I said it does not happen all the time. The tech said he reset my computer.

A txdot road work crew had traffic stopped on the highway. We were last in a row of traffic when a distracted, driver, traveling near full highway speed rear-ended us. The truck automatically connected us to an agent who called 911. The message screen showed 2 warnings which said seatbelt malfunction and airbag malfunction. My husband and I both sustained injuries from the forward force against the seat belts to his abdomen and my shoulder, both of which required surgical repair. The airbags did not deploy. The truck was a total loss. A police report was filed but I do not have a copy.

I started up my Toyota Tacoma early morning on [XXX] and noticed the engine light came on after it warmed up in the cold climate of Northern Arizona. As such, this occurred at 36,303 miles. The fault code stated the following: “A malfunction in the electronic control of the engine, throttle, or automatic transmission has been detected. Contact your Toyota dealer in order to have your vehicle inspected.” Later in the day, I scheduled an appointment for December 14, 2024 at Anderson Toyota. I explained the situation and was disappointed to get an engine light so early, as it didn’t make any sense. Afterwards, at 8:47 PM from getting off work, I intuitively decided to check the engine compartment as the lady with the dealership claimed if rats chewed up the wires it wouldn’t be covered under warranty. Lo and behold, I didn’t find any wires chewed up, but I did find the engine oil filler cap wholly missing! I documented this incident with my camera phone in utter disgust, my initial assessment is Toyota failed to reinstall the oil filler cap. I called the next day, and left a voicemail expressing my disgust and disappointment in their service. Upon arrival, Service Advisor Jennifer advised it is a known issue with the OEM oil filler caps coming off. The dealership claims it wasn’t their tech, but a faulty part. Again, (1) this puts me in danger on the road with open contamination occurring to the point, where my engine light is now activated and (2) Toyota should issue a lifetime replacement warranty for any engine issues for the 22’ model Tacomas as the damage has occurred, regardless of what the dealership claims. Tire size 265/65/R17 In 8000 miles on a 2022 Toyota Tacoma, purchased new in August 2022, I have had two Nitto Ridge Grappler sidewall failures. Each has happened at highway speeds (55-60 mph) with adequate pressure (35 PSI). No objects or road hazards were encountered. Each tire displayed significant sidewall damage resulting in rapid loss of pressure (blowout). The passenger side front and driver side rear have both experienced the failure. This is a safety concern as a rapid decrease in pressure creates unstable driving conditions. So far, I have received no response from Nitto or Toyota regarding the failures. Instead, I am now required to purchase two new tires. I am concerned the other two will eventually fail on the sidewalls as well.

Vehicle exhibits symptoms typically associated with (at least in older vehicles) of a failing torque converter. Initial onset was around the 5k mile mark, the truck was purchased brand new. Vehicles shudders under load, especially uphill or from a stop, the truck frequently hunts for the gears during shifts (truck will initiate a shift and then just rev up and down, depending on if you remove your foot when it does it to avoid damaging the engine), I have clanking and a metallic clicking sound coming from the bell housing, tranmission casing and bell housing radiate heat from under the vehicle hot enough to be uncomfortable climbing out of the vehicle after a 30-45 minute drive (my youngest recently started asking me to pick her up out of the truck cause it "burns" **is hot** on her leg, where she used to love climbing and jumping off my steps), my avg milage dropped from low to mid 20s to avg 14-18 miles per gallon since the initial onset, and the dealership and toyota customer service keep telling me there's nothing wrong with it, they all do that, and they're just "Vehicle Characteristics" of the Tacoma.. I've driven friends and family members tacomas of the same generation that did not do it, and mine DID NOT DO IT NEW! They told me at first it was just the transmission learning my driving habits and I told them I would give it time.. Last interaction with dealer, who hinted they would buy it, toyota told me that I would have to pay for a transmission service in order to check it properly (manually/not with an OBD scanner) and IF there was a confirmed issue that I could TRY and apply for reimbursement. This vehicle has 22k miles on it and has been serviced as instructed everytime. Originally only very slight surging felt between 40-50mph, now it is at any speeds and significantly more violent at lower speeds or when trying to merge on interstate (truck loses traction to rear end occasionally during 55mph shift in moist or foggy weather while merging)

The adaptive cruise control will randomly slam on the brakes out of nowhere. This has happened multiple times to me while driving behind no one. Not only is this startling to me and everyone in the vehicle, but it is a safety hazard. Someone driving behind me who is not paying attention is going to slam into me. I've raised the issue with my local Toyota dealership where I get my truck serviced and they've indicated that this is a known issue with the radar cruise control. I'm worried this is going to happen on the highway at high speed and cause a massive accident.

The vehicle since approximately 45,000 miles had exhibited occasional steering wheel jitter that would go away when traveling at high speeds. In addition to the steering wheel jitter, the vehicle would pull to the right when traveling and required continued contact with the steering wheel. Dealerships had indicated the vehicle needed an alignment since approximately 30,000 miles. Wheel balancing performed at discount tire acceptably reduced the amount that the vehicle pulls towards the right when traveling at highway speeds. At 78k miles when visiting an alignment service center the technician indicated that the wheel bearing on the front passenger side required replacement and then demonstrated lateral play in the wheel that permitted a quarter inch to 3/8th inches of play. The bearing had been wobbling for a prolonged period of time.

In March, 2022, we had ice that coated the car and the driveway of my residence that led to schools being closed. The next day conditions were better, and on my way home from work I noticed that the passenger side view mirror had developed a strange crack that at first made me think that a sticker had been placed on the mirror. When I examined it closer, I found it to be a crack in the mirror that I tend to think was the result of the icing from the previous day. My concern is that the crack will spread and make the mirror unusable. I discussed this with my service advisor at Wilde Toyota in Milwaukee on 4/11/22 and told him that I felt the crack was a manufacturers defect. The advisor told me that they would not cover the damage as a defect, but that he had taken photos and sent the information to Toyota for consideration. The paperwork provided to me did not confirm or state that anything had been sent to Toyota.

The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that both the front driver's seat and front passenger’s seat were vibrating while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the rear brake drums were grooved. The dealer turned the rear brake drums; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, the contact stated while driving at various speeds, the Pre-Collision malfunction warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure also occurred upon starting the vehicle. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was caused by rainy and snowy weather; however, the contact stated that the failure had been occurring in good weather conditions as well. The dealer informed the contact that they could not diagnose the vehicle unless the warning light was illuminated at the time the diagnostic tests were being performed. The contact stated that the warning light would turn off upon turning off and restarting the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 10.

I purchased my vehicle (Toyota Tacoma TRD PRO) on September 23, 2022 and identified issues with all of the exterior cameras immediately. I scheduled an appointment with Toyota to inspect the problem with blurry cameras on September 29, 2022, but they advised that all 2022 vehicles have similar blurriness issues. I also own a 2018 Toyota Highlander that has a much more crisp image, so I know Toyota has a problem with the cameras. Fast forward to approximately November 20, 2022 when my first problem occurred. I was backing into a parking space that had a shopping cart that was left on the sidewalk behind my parking space. Knowing that I was clear to park, I proceeded to back into the space, but as I started to back up, the already blurry camera flared up because of the direct sunlight and I could not observe anything. It so happens that the shopping cart started to roll towards my parking spot and hit the bumper of my truck, because of the high tailgate I was not able to observe this moving cart in my mirrors. Because of the flared and blurry camera image, I could not see the cart and the minor collision occurred. There was no damage to either my truck or the cart, but this could have been a child or animal and could have resulted injury or loss of life. As I have learned, this particular camera cannot be relied upon for the safe viewing behind the vehicle as it was intended. As my vehicle is equipped with multiple front, side, and rear cameras and they are all blurry, I would presume the problem lies somewhere with the computer or image controlling board that the cameras are attached to. This issue has not been inspected by the police or insurance company as no loss occurred and there were not faults indicated on the vehicle. Toyota did state that this was the normal operation for all 2022 vehicles and I presume this is a widespread issue what will inevitably have dire consequences down the road. Please evaluate and encourage Toyota to produce a fix.

There is a recall on the rear seat anchor and no remedy listed Nd its almost been a month. I have two small children that use my truck as their primary transportation because we are a one car family. No dealership will issue me a loaner car. My children have no way to get to school because Toyota can not make reliable and safe vehicles.
