For recall 21V198-69BY, I took my car to Audi of Birmingham on recall. They provided me a service form to show the repair had been made, but my passenger side air bag off light is still on because they didn't make the repair. It wasn't brought to my attention until I took my car for another repair job and the didn't make that repair, either.

How is it these recalls that effect life safety systems still do not have a solution? On top of it, there have been previous recalls on the same system. How is it acceptable to allow the manufacturer to not have a solution to this for 1.5 years? Manufacturer Recall Number: 69BY NHTSA Recall Number: 21V198 What does NHTSA do to ensure these are addressed in a timely manner?

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Shortly after starting the car, and while exiting a parking lot, the car stalled and lost engine power. I was able to start the car back up for long enough to be able to pull back into the parking lot however after the car got parked the engine refused to start and stay running for the next hour. After a check using OBD11, the codes were showing the cause of the original problem was low fuel pressure which ended up causing misfires. The only way I was able to get the car running and staying running was by purging the system repeatedly by turning on the ignition without starting the car. This has all happened once before while I was driving at relatively low speeds (around 25 MPH) in a town, and I had to go through the same process. No warning lights show for the first multiple attempts at starting the car until it consistently fails to start. No inspections have taken place.

This is in regards to your investigation into a recall for Audi 2015 A3 fuel system issues. My car was repaired as part of that initial recall, however, i am experiencing a bunch of fuel related issues as of now. My fuel tank will no longer fill with gas. The dealership said i need a need fuel tank. Then at the exact same time, my low side fuel pump failed. I mentioned to the dealership about the recall and the fuel problems, they told me they were not related. I paid to replace the lower said fuel pump. Now a few months later my high side fuel pump has failed. I then found the article about the investigation about fuel issues, they told me again it was not related. So now they are asking me to replace the high side fuel pump. I told them it was not a coincidence that both fuel pumps and my gas tank all fail at the same time along with the investigation. They again told me its not related. I opened up a case with Audi of America and they are investigating. Having issues with the fuel delivery system will cause the car to sudden stop and stall at high rates of speed, and has caused me to break down in the middle of the road with no warning.

Fuel pump issue. Car will stall when driving.

Vehicle is not taking fuel, there is early stopping of the fuel nozzle and there is significant fuel spillback. Fuel would go in for 2 seconds and the fuel nozzle shuts off. I was trying to refill and then there was spillback of fuel that propelled all over my body and all over the floor of the gas station. I had taken my vehicle to a licensed repair shop who thought it might be a carbon canister which I got replaced. I tried to refuel after the maintenance and the problem persisted. My vehicle once again could not refuel, after sitting at a gas station for 10 minutes I was calling my Husband, all of the sudden what little fuel was left in the tank shot back out and spilled all over the gas station floor and side of my car. I took my car to the licensed repair facility who then called my warranty company and they had adjuster come out as the repair facility tried to refuel my car, and it would not refuel and adjuster took videos of the fuel spilling back out. The warranty would not cover my vehicle because they say it is EVAP and they found a safety recall that matches the symptoms NHTSA: 16V647 for 2015 Audi A3 Sedans. Mine is a 2015 Audi A3 Sedan but for some reason this is not covered according to my VIN #

I experienced issues putting fuel in my vehicle. The pump would shut off as if the tank were full after putting only a few dollars in the tank. At one point gas backed up and spalshed onto my hand and cloths, down the side of my vehicle onto the ground. Prior to this I noticed my vehicle hesitating when accelerating at times. I took it to the Audi dealership explaining something was preventing fuel from going into the gas tank. The Audi dealership’s initial diagnosis recommendation was to replace charcoal cannister as it had gas in it. Once replaced, the technician still had issues fueling the vehicle. After a second diagnostic test they determined the Evap Cannister as well as the actual fuel tank needed to be replaced. I did take my vehicle to another establishment for a second opinion as I felt the Audi dealership did not appear to know what the exact problem was. Prior to and during the issue with my vehicle, there were no warning lamps on messages indicating any problems. There was only the slight hesitation when accelerating periodically. This occurred approximately 1 week prior to the fueling issues.

It has been nearly 9 months since this recall was issued. Audi cannot provide a remedy and cannot tell me when they can provide a remedy. I cannot transport a passenger in the front seat safely, and I cannot sell the car because Audi has issued a 'stop sell' order. Audi will not repurchase the car.

JUNE 2018 PAID OUT OF POCKET FOR PASSENGER PODS DUE TO FAULTY SENSOR FOR PASSENGER AIR BAG. 10/2019 RECALL FOR WIRING WAS DONE. OCTOBER 29 2020, PODS NEED REPLACED AGAIN! OUT OF WARRANTY! THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AND AFTER VIEWING MULTIPLE OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME ISSUE, A RECALL MUST BE DONE! AUDI NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND ADDRESS THEIR FAULTY ISSUE WHICH SHOULD HE COVERED UNDER RECALL. GOD FORBID SOMEONE BECOME SERIOUSLY INJURED OR LOSE THEIR LIFE DUE TO AUDIS LACK OF RESPONSE. I AM NOW BEING TOLD THAT I LUST PAY OUT OF POCKET ONCE AGAIN TO REPAIR!

MY AUDI A3 CONTINUALLY HAS A PRESENCE SYSTEM FAULT WHEN THE CAR STARTS WHICH INDICATES THAT THE SYSTEM IS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. AS A RESULT IT TURNS OFF THE PASSENGER AIRBAG EVEN WITH THE SEAT OCCUPIED WHICH IS A SAFETY HAZARD. AUDI HAS INDICATED THAT THIS IS DUE TO A FAULTY SENSOR. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS ISSUE TO AUDI.S ATTENTION FOR OVER FOUR YEARS WITH NO RESOLUTION. THIS ISSUE HAS CONTINUED DESPITE A PRIOR RECALL SERVICE ON ANOTHER CONNECTOR WITH THE PODS SYSTEM HOWEVER IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT FIX THE ISSSUE CONTINUED AND AUDI INDICATES IT ACTUALLY LIKES WITH A FAULTY SENSOR. THIS ISSUE OCCURS RANDOMLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED OR WHILE ALREADY DRIVING, THE ERROR MAKES A LOUD NOISE AND PUT AN ALERT ON THE MAIN DASHBOARD WHICH IS UNNERVING AND DISTRACTING WHILE DRIVING. I PREVIOUSLY PROVIDED AUDI PICTURES OF THE ALERT MESSAGES MULTIPLE TIMES OVER SEVERAL YEARS WITH NO RESOLUTION.

Smelt like something was burning and the smell was coming out of vents. Looked online and found that people have been having issues with the auxiliary heater for the HVAC to help the car warm up faster. I check mine and found that the connector was staring to melt. Seems like it could be a potential fire hazard if not caught soon enough.

Gear Shift Micro Switch This is a documented issue recalled for VW and Audi vehicles between 2015-2019. VW recalled all and still is fixing the issue in cars from those years, yet AUDI decided to just offer an extended warranty to those cars for that specific issue. Who is responsible VW or AUDI. If Audi is owned by VW and the issue is in both types of cars made by them, why aren't AUDI vehicles included to the recall and repair.

The Auxiliary PTC Electric Cabin Heater fails and causes an overheat/fire condition. We own a 2015 Audi A3 TDI Premium Plus sedan. This vehicle has a diesel engine. Audi fitted A3 models that have a diesel engine with an auxiliary electric cabin air heater. This heater helps to warm the cabin and provide defrost capabilities on days when the temperature is below 7 degrees C. This heater in our vehicle failed due to melting at the wiring harness connection lugs. This melting caused an overheating condition to occur. On cold days we would notice a terrible burning plastic, rubber smell coming from the air vents inside the cabin. Once the car was warmed up and the electric heater was disabled by the cars ECU (computer) the smell gradually went away. The process was repeated the next day, but the smell was worse. We took the vehicle to Zimbrick European Audi in Madison, WI. They found the electrical issue with the Auxiliary Electric Cabin Air heater. In researching this issue we found there are MANY user reports of the same failure on Volkswagon Audi Group vehicles. Audi issued a safety recall for the SAME problem on Audi A4, A5 and Q5 vehicles under Audi Safety Recall Code : 80C5 with the NHTSA document number being: RCRIT-17V622-6265.pdf This very same problem currently affects my Audi A3 TDI. I have found numerous other people reporting the same issue with VW Golf TDI models, VW Passat TDI models and Jetta TDI models. Examples are located here: https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php?threads/burning-smell-from-heat.513304/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6tEwBzZIxs The problem is most likely the same materials defects that occurred with the Audi A4, A5 and Q5 models. The third party supplier of the Auxiliary Electric Cabin Air Heaters used TIN for some of the components. These substandard components lead to product failure and ultimately thermal overload, melting plastic/rubber and potentially a fire.

The contact owns a 2015 Audi A3. The contact stated that she was able to remove the key from the ignition switch even though the gear selector was not in the PARK position. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the dealer installed a microswitch. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall for the failure because it was not a safety hazard. The failure mileage was 49,154.

During cold ambient temperature when the engine is cold the vehicle activates an axillary cabin heater which fills the cabin with smoke and burning odor due to the heating element burning the housing and wiring inside the dash. This is a serious danger risking vehicle fire and health hazard for the operator and occupants of the vehicle. It appears multiple other Audi vehicles have a similar/same heating element that have the same issue. The 2015 A4 and Q5 appear to have a recall for this issue.

AFTER RECENT CAR INSPECTION DUE TO RECALL FOR PASSENGER OCCUPANT DETECTION I WAS INFORMED THAT WATER PUMP WAS LEAKING AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. VEHICLE HAS ONLY 55 000 MILES ON IT. OTHER AUDI MODELS APPEAR TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE AND THEY HAVE BEEN RECALLED, HOWEVER NO RECALLS HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR AUDI A3 2015. AS A MANUFACTURER AUDI MUST TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR FAULTY PARTS AND IT SHOULD REPLACE THEM ON THEIR OWN EXPENSE.

Since 2021-2022 I have had several issues with my reservoir tank. This tank holds my coolant and has leaked continuously. They had a settlement for this problem but omitted the a3. I paid Audi dealership $ 1,600.00 to fix the problem a few years ago and have been having the same problem ever since. A few months after I paid for this problem Audi had a settlement for the reservoir tank and I was denied reimbursement because I owned a a3 and a3’s were not included in the settlement but a3 ‘s still had the reservoir problem as well. I contacted Audi USA on several occasions and still have been disregarded but Audi USA wants you to pay for the diagnostic first at the dealership just for them to even look at the immediate problem. I just contacted Audi USA again 1/29/25 because now I have to put my car in the shop again to get it fixed but the coolant constantly leaks and Audi service shop wants me to pay for it and I feel that I should not have to pay for (their )problem again and the same problem over and over. At this point the coolant is pouring out like water and I must get my car to the shop immediately because the engine light comes on stating no coolant running hot and this is how the Audi cars catch on fire. Please investigate this !!!! I refuse to give Audi any more of my money when they should be held responsible. I can’t find my receipt of date and amount paid but I can get this info from the dealership. I’m tired of going in a circle with this same car issue. I want my car fix and my settlement reimbursement.

My 2015 Audi A3 has a recall since first part of 2021 for passenger air bag sensor. We have tried several times to get this recall fixed and every time we call the dealership they don’t have the parts. This has gone on for about a year and a half now. EVERY 2 MIN. HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF BY IT SELF FOR 2-3 SECONDS.. THEN TURN BACK ON.. PEOPLE ON FRONT OF YOU THINK THAT YOU HIGH BEAM THEM... BUT THE DANGER IS WHEN YOU DRIVE LIKE ON BRIDGE OR HIGHWAY WHERE NO STREET LIGHTS.. ROAD MAKING TURN.. AND YOUR HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF FOR COUPLE OF SECONDS.. AS OTHERS HAVE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED, THE LOW BEAMS / REGULAR HEADLIGHTS ON THE A3 ARE SET TOO LOW AND SO MUCH OF THE ROAD AHEAD REMAINS BLACK. THIS IS A HAZARD AS YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF OBSTACLES AND TURNS IN THE ROAD UNTIL TOO LATE.
Jul 12, 2016
THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTING SUDDENLY DROPS OFF INTO DARK AREA ABOUT 25 FEET IN FRONT. THE DEALERSHIP ADJUSTED THE HEADLIGHTS UPWARD TO THE LIMIT THEY CLAIM THEY CAN. HOWEVER, IT REMAINS VERY DARK BEYOND THE HEADLIGHT REACH, WHEN ON UNLIT RURAL ROADS. A PERSON OR ANIMAL IN THAT ZONE WOULD NOT BE SEEN IN TIME TO AVOID.
Jun 04, 2016
THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ARE TOO LOW. THERE IS A DROP-OFF SO THERE APPEARS A DARK AREA ABOUT 10 FEET IN FRONT AND TO THE LEFT OF THE DRIVER SIDE WHEN DRIVING. IT'S ALMOST LIKE THE RIGHT BEAM IS CROSSING THE LEFT. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT IT HAD TO DO WITH EUROPEAN CODE AND THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE. I HAVE DRIVEN MANY CARS IN MY LIFE WHERE THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE IN MY OPINION - IT'S DIFFICULT TO SEE THE ROAD.
Nov 22, 2015
THE HEADLIGHTS ON THE 2015 AUDI A3 INADEQATELY LIGHTS THE ROAD AHEAD ESPECIALLY ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE THE ROAD AHEAD TO THE POINT THAT IT HAS BECOME A SAFERY PROBLEM TO MYSELF AND ANYONE USING THIS VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERS ATTENTION AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS HOW THE HEADLIGHTS WERE DESIGNED AND WE MUST LIVE WITH IT. THEY LET US DRIVE AN AUDI A4 HOME IN THE DARK AND HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THE HEADLIGHTS AND SEEING THE ROAD IN SHORT, THERE IS A REAL SAFETY PROBLEM HERE THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED ON THE 2015 AUDI A3 !!!!

Airbag pressure sensing fault in passenger seat. Fix is $1,800
Oct 23, 2025
There has been previous recall for the passenger seat occupation sensor in 2019, asking for a connector to be replaced. Approximately 3 months after the connector was replaced in late 2019, the airbag warning light in the dashboard turned on. That was approximately in March or April of 2020. The car was only lightly used during 2020 and the latest recall had not been issued. In early 2021, a letter with recall information arrived and stated that I shall not use the car with the passenger seat occupied if the warning light was on. I contacted Audi Service in May 2021 and was told that no parts were available to repair - About a month ago I received another letter repeating the warning and stating that parts were available. I tried to arrange an appointment but was again told, no parts were available and the earliest appointment would be available in May. As of now, the airbag warning light is on, the airbag indicator says “Airbag has been disabled” and the diagnostic readout reports “Sensor resistance too high"

SHORTLY AFTER HAVING RECALL 69Z4 COMPLETED (HARNESS AND CONNECTOR) COMPLETED STARTED GETTING WARNINGS THE PASSENGER AIRBAG NOT WORKING AND WHEN SOMEONE WAS NOT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT GETTING A SEATBELT WARNING. ALSO ERROR ON DISPLAY ABOUT PRE-SENSE ERROR. WENT TO DEALER AND POINT OUT THIS STARTED RIGHT AFTER THE RECALL AND THEY SAID DIFFERENT ISSUE AND HAS IMPACTED A LOT OF OTHERS. NOW THEY SAY THE PODS (PASSENGER OCCUPANCY DETECTION SYSTEM) NEEDS TO BE REPLACED QUOTING ME APPROXIMATELY $1200 TO FIX. DUE TO THE FAULT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG WILL NOT OPERATE. IN ADDITION TO MY DEALER TELLING ME IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM, WHEN LOOKING AT THE FORUMS IT SEEMS LIKE A PROBLEM ACROSS MANY AUDI MODELS, NOT JUST THE A3, S3.

STRUCTURE
4 complaints
The plastic roof trim panel on my 2015 Audi A3 is peeling and deteriorating significantly. This is not painted metal—it’s a separate, non-paintable plastic component that runs along the sunroof and roofline. The surface began flaking and lifting over time, and multiple independent body shops confirmed the panel is failing structurally and cannot be refinished—it must be replaced. While this may appear cosmetic, it’s not. The panel helps protect the roof seam and substructure. Its failure opens the door to water intrusion, corrosion, and potential roof integrity compromise—a serious safety concern, particularly in the event of a rollover or high-impact collision. Other owners of vehicles built on the same MQB/8V platform—including the VW Golf and SEAT Leon (not sold in the U.S., but structurally similar)—have reported identical issues, often followed by cracking or detachment of the panel. Despite multiple attempts to resolve this, Audi of America has been largely uncooperative. Their warranty process requires a diagnosis from a dealership, but most Audi dealers do not perform bodywork and refer customers to third-party shops—whose assessments Audi then refuses to accept. I’ve been left in a loop with no meaningful support, despite the issue being widespread and well-documented. I believe this is a design or materials defect that should be reviewed before it leads to broader safety or structural failures. See the below URL's for similar issues. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] Excuse the shortened URL's, I need to meet your character count. I also cannot seem to upload images (despite being under the file size). I can email them later. I do find it interesting how all the affected cars seem to be blue (or at least darker in color). Perhaps excess heat is causing the issue? THIS MAKES PARKING OR MOVING FORWARD A SMALL DISTANCE DIFFICULT AND SOMETIMES CAUSES THE DRIVER TO JAM ON BRAKE WITH THE SUDDEN MOVEMENT. IF DRIVER IS NOT CONSTANTLY AWARE OF SUDDEN MOVEMENT CAR WILL HIT THINGS IN FRONT OF IT. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD BY DEALER AND AUDI USA THAT THIS CONDITION CANNOT BE CORRECTED. *TR

CONTINENTAL TIRES THAT CAME INSTALLED ON MY 2015 AUDI A3 AND APPEAR TO EITHER HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE OR POORLY INSTALLED. I STARTED EXPERIENCING LEAKS IN THE REAR RIGHT TIRE OF THE CAR, AND TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC'S REPORT (ATTACHED, ALONG WITH PICTURES OF THE TIRE) STATES: "DAMAGE TO BEAD OF TIRE WHERE IT SEATS (SIC) ... THESE CONDITIONS ARE CAUSED BY IMPROPER USE OF TOOLS, INCORRECT TECHNIQUES USED WHEN MOUNTING/DEMOUNTING TIRES AND/OR LACK OF BEAD LUBRICATION". I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MY TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THIS CAR WITH THIS DEFECTIVE TIRE FOR ABOUT 16,000 MILES AND 3 YEARS, AND DON'T EVEN WANT TO THINK ABOUT WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD THE TIRE HAD FAILED AT 65MPH. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR WEBSITE FAILS WHEN TRYING TO UPLOAD PICS. HAPPY TO DO SO AT A LATER DATE.

1 CRACKED RIM AND 1 BENT RIM. THE CRACKED RIM CAUSED AIR TO LEAK FROM THE TIRE, SO I GOT I BECAME AWARE OF IT AFTER TAKING IT INTO A TIRE SHOP TO INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE. 8 MONTHS LATER I TAKE THE CAR BACK IN DUE TO A VIBRATION BETWEEN 35-40MPH AND I WAS SHOWN THAT THE RIM WAS BENT. I DON'T REMEMBER EVER HITTING ANYTHING HARD ENOUGH TO THINK THAT I COULD HAVE CRACKED OR BENT A RIM. I QUESTION THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THEIR 19" RIMS.

SINCE PURCHASING MY AUDI A3 ON 2/8/2015 I HAVE HAD FOUR FLAT TIRES. DATES OF TIRE FAILURE: 2/16/15, 2/18/15, 3/5/15 AND 4/3. MY TIRES ARE OEM AND ARE CONTIPROCONTACT 225/40 18 92H. ALL FOUR TIRE FAILURES HAVE HAPPENED AT LOW SPEED (5-20 MPH) GOING OVER POTHOLES. HOWEVER, I HAVE DRIVEN ON THESE SAME BOSTON ROADS FOR 12 YEARS AND NEVER HAD TIRE DAMAGE FROM A POTHOLE BEFORE. CURRENTLY MY TOTAL MILEAGE IS JUST UNDER 1200. AS I PURCHASED A TIRE WARRANTY, THE WARRANTY COMPANY HAS REPLACED THE TIRES WITH NEW TIRES. THEY CLAIM IT IS JUST BAD ROADS. (SAID ANOTHER CUSTOMER HAD 7 FLATS IN A FEW WEEKS) HOWEVER, ONLINE IT SEEMS THAT THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS FOR CONTINENTAL TIRES HAVING SIDEWALL ISSUES (BUBBLING) WITH NO OR MINIMAL ROAD HAZARD AND AT LOW SPEEDS. A DEALERSHIP SERVICE EMPLOYEE SAID THEY HAVE BEEN OVERWHELMED WITH TIRE ISSUES, MOSTLY IN NEWLY SOLD AUDIS. THE DEALERSHIP IS NOT TRACKING ANY DATA ON WHICH TIRES ARE HAVING ISSUES. THEY ARE NOT OFFERING ANY SOLUTIONS. AUDI NATIONAL DID NOTHING. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR. AM A SINGLE WOMAN WHO HAS TO TRAVEL AT ALL HOURS OF THE DAY/NIGHT AND GO ALL OVER THE STATE, INCLUDING THROUGH SOME ROUGH CITY NEIGHBORHOODS OR SECLUDED AREAS. IT HAS BECOME A PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY TO BE SO UNRELIABLE AS I SPEND ALL MY TIME WAITING FOR ROAD SERVICE, TAKING MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, ETC. *TR

CAR RECEIVED PODS RECALL FIX CODED 69Z4 IN JANUARY 2020. THE FIX DID NOT SOLVE THE ANNOYING AND LIFE THREATENING MALFUNCTIONION THAT LEADS TO AUDI PRESENSE FAILURE ALERT AND DEACTIVATION OF THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SYSTEM WHEN A PASSENGER IS SEATED. IT WOULD ALSO TRIGGER THE ERROR WHEN NO PASSENGER WAS SEATED, REQUIRING TO FASTEN THE SEATBELT TO AN EMPTY SEAT TO GET RID OF THE SEATBELT BEEPS. CAR WAS TAKEN IN TO AUDI DEALERSHIP OCTOBER AND AFTER AN INSPECTION, THE ISSUE WAS FOUND TO BE THE SENSOR ITSELF THIS TIME. THE DIAGNOSIS REPORT DILIGENTLY RULED OUT ANY PROBLEM WITH THE CONNECTOR AND WIRING WHOSE FAULT WOULD MEAN A POTENTIAL REPAIR AND THE INSPECTION WOULD BE AT NO COST TO OWNER. HOWEVER, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE'S COMPLAINTS OWNER WAS PRESENTED WITH A 1,500 DOLLAR QUOTE FOR REPLACING THE SENSOR + $250 FEE FOR USING THEIR VAGCOM ("INSPECTION"). THE ERROR CODE WAS B12251B (MAT RESISTANCE TOO HIGH). AUDI'S INTERNAL DOCUMENTS ACCESSED THROUGH NHTSA REPORT THAT "IF FAULT, 'B12251B: SEAT OCCUPIED RECOGNITION SENSOR MAT RESISTANCE TOO HIGH' IS STORED IN THE AIRBAG CONTROL MODULE, DO NOT DIAGNOSE OR REPLACE ANY COMPONENTS FOR THIS FAULT BEFORE PERFORMING THIS REPAIR. THE 69Z4 TOPIC IS NOT THE ONLY CAUSE OF THIS FAULT. ANY DIAGNOSIS RELATED TO THIS FAULT WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER THIS CAMPAIGN." AUDI OPENLY ADMITS THAT THE SCOPE OF THE 69Z4 RECALL AND THE SENSOR ISSUE ARE LINKED TOGETHER BY VIRTUE OF HAVING SIMILAR BEHAVIORS FOR THE CAR SYSTEMS AS WELL AS FAULT CODES. HOWEVER AUDI PERFORMS THE CHEAPER BANDAID OUT OF POCKET AND EXPECTS THE OWNER TO PAY FOR THE FAULTY PART WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THE RECALL IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME BEHAVIOUR AND SAME PART (THAT IS TRADITIONALLY NOT YOUR USUAL WEAR&AND&TEAR PART LIKE A BATTERY) WARRANT AN INVESTIGATION OF THE MALPRACTICES OF AUDI IN DEALING WITH THIS RECALL AND ITS CUSTOMERS.
Oct 28, 2020
AUDI RECALL CAMPAIGN 69Z4 WAS SUPPOSED TO FIX THE PASSENGER OCCUPANT DETECTION SYSTEM MALFUNCTION BY REPLACING A CONNECTOR AND HARNESS. THIS HAS NOT FIXED THE ISSUES. MANY AUDI CUSTOMERS SAYING THE SEAT BELT ALARM AND WARNING LIGHT STILL COME ON. MINE WILL NOT SHUT OFF UNTIL I PLUG THE SEAT BELT BACK IN, BUT THEN MY AIRBAGS TURN ON AND OFF RANDOMLY EVEN IF THERE IS AN OCCUPANT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THIS WAS THE CHEAP FIX. AUDI ACKNOWLEDGES THE ISSUE WITH THE ACTUAL PODS SENSOR BUT MAKES CUSTOMERS PAY $1,200 FOR THE SAFETY FIX. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THE RECALL. AUDI BLAMES MINE ON THE DAMAGE TO THE REAR OF THE CAR, BUT THE PHOTOS PRE-DATE THE DAMAGE TO THE REAR BUMPER.

Subject: Complaint regarding refusal to perform recall repairs outside the U.S. – VIN [XXX] Dear NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation, I am the owner of an Audi A3, model year 2015, VIN [XXX] . According to the NHTSA database, my vehicle is subject to two open recall campaigns: – 69BY / 21V198 – Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) – 20YF / 24V110 – EVAP Suction Pump I currently reside in Ukraine, where the vehicle has been legally imported and registered. Despite the recalls being active and safety-related, the official Audi importer and dealers in Ukraine have refused to perform the repairs free of charge. They argue that these recalls apply only to the U.S. market and therefore decline service, which contradicts the global principle of mandatory recall repairs. This situation puts me and other drivers at risk, as the unresolved recall issues directly affect vehicle safety. I kindly ask NHTSA to review this case and provide guidance on ensuring that recall obligations are respected internationally, or to instruct Audi AG / Audi of America to facilitate the execution of these recalls regardless of the vehicle’s current market. Attached, please find copies of my correspondence with Audi dealers in Ukraine and Audi of America. Thank you for your assistance. My 2015 Audi A3 1.8T is experiencing the exact same failure symptoms and operational hazards as those described in Audi’s own Warranty Extension U49, which covers certain 2017 and 2018 Audi A3 and A3 Cabriolet 2.0 TFSI models. According to Audi’s bulletin, vehicles with faulty mechatronic units are eligible for replacement under an extended warranty due to safety concerns — sudden loss of drive, vehicle being stuck in neutral, and PRNDS flashing while in traffic. My vehicle is now exhibiting these identical symptoms: (1) Sudden disengagement of all gears while driving when it tries to go to fourth gear. At this point, there is a (2) flashing PRNDS indicator and “Reverse Gear Not Available” message. (3) Loss of ability to accelerate in moving traffic, requiring emergency maneuvers, and halting traffic. (4) Temporary restoration of function after shutting off and restarting the engine, only for the problem to happen again. (5) Check Engine Light. This is a serious safety hazard that puts both the driver and other road users at risk. The only reason my vehicle is excluded from the coverage appears to be its model year (2015), despite the fact that the mechatronic unit and failure mode are identical to the covered 2017–2018 vehicles. I believe Audi overlooked this issue in other year models and, as such, I respectfully request that the NHTSA investigate why Audi is limiting this safety-related repair to only certain VIN ranges and model years, when vehicles just a couple of years older are exhibiting the exact same dangerous defect. A sudden loss of propulsion at highway speeds is a serious risk that warrants broader manufacturer accountability. The company should fix this issue as soon as possible.

Dear NHTSA, I am filing a complaint about the handling of a recall repair on my 2015 Audi A3 (VIN: [XXX] ) for the suction jet pump. The service experience has been frustrating and raises concerns about the repair’s quality. 1.First Visit - Inadequate Information: During my first visit to the service center, over an hour away, I was turned away because my fuel level was too high. I was never informed that my gas tank needed to be below a certain level for the repair, resulting in wasted time and travel. 2.Second Visit - Check Engine Light Still On: On my second visit, the suction jet pump was supposedly repaired, but my check engine light remained on. I had informed the service advisor that the light was related to an EVAP system malfunction, which I was told could be caused by a faulty suction jet pump. After speaking with multiple mechanics, I learned that a malfunctioning suction jet pump could cause fuel to enter the EVAP system, damaging parts like the purge valve or charcoal canister. 3.Unreasonable Charges: The service advisor insisted that the remaining EVAP issues were unrelated to the recall and wanted to charge $220 for another diagnostic and repairs, without even inspecting the car after the recall service. This seems unfair, as there’s no way to confirm without a proper check. 4.Missing Seat Belt Buckle: After the recall service, I discovered that the rear driver’s side seat belt buckle was missing. This is a major safety concern and needs to be addressed. I request NHTSA’s help in investigating the repair quality and ensuring these issues are resolved fairly. Thank you for your attention. Consumer bought this car at 30,040 miles. The car currently sits with 89,000 miles. I have had 18 recommended service visits totaling $19,240 and then on July 15, 2022 with no pre indicators or warnings the engine dies after a 95k full multipoint inspection that consumer had 3 weeks prior. The car has an impeccable Maintenace record. I did everything the dealer told me; and I still almost died on the 101 fwy going 70 mph on a conference call; the flashers didnt even work; the car dead and came to a hard halt and trucks were screeching around me with smoke coming from their tires because of the extreme hard stop and slamming on breaks, i was screaming for my life praying no one would slam into me. Metro who roams the fwy saved my life; without him i would be dead because of AUDI's HORRIBLY MANUFATCTURED VEHICLE. It seems as though the dealer purposefully sabotages my car as a woman; i have no alternative but to fix it and now they want $27,000 MORE for a new engine AND starter. so, in total; to drive 57,000 miles I've paid $37,000 cash for the car (I own the title)/ plus $19,240 in maintenance /repairs and now they want another 27,000 for the engine. i have no more money to give them. i recently returned my 3rd rental vehicle and i am out of funds on transportation. There is a recall on our daughters Audi A3 that we have been trying to have fixed for over 2 years. We call, we follow up and are consistently told there is no fix for the problem. The engine low oil light keeps coming on, the oil has been changed already, I’ve had the car for more than 7 months I haven’t even driven it over 5000 miles yet. Audi needs to fix this. The power train is also the same, some days it works okay and some days it doesn’t. The cars struggles sometimes to even reach speeds up to 50 mph.I’ve taken this vehicle to the Audi dealship as well as to a foreign certified mechanic shop. They can’t figure out the problem. The engine light should not be coming on randomly when I have fully serviced the vehicle. Audi please fix these problems.

IN 2019, I WAS NOTIFIED OF A RECALL CONSISTING OF THE PODS(PASSENGER OCCUPANT DETECTION SYSTEM) SYSTEM STATING THAT THE WIRING AND CONNECTOR NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE RECALL SERVICE REPAIRS DONE. AFTER COMPLETION OF THE RECALL REPAIRS, I HAVE NOW BEGAN TO HAVE ISSUES WITH MY AIRBAG SENSOR WHICH IS PART OF THE PODS SYSTEM. AROUND MARCH 2020, I BEGAN HAVING ISSUES WITH MY AIRBAG TURNING ON AND OFF WHILE A PASSENGER IS SITTING IN MY PASSENGER SEAT WITH THE SEATBELT ON. I WOULD HAVE TO INSTRUCT MY PASSENGER TO DISENGAGE THE SEATBELT AND RE-ENGAGE IT IN ORDER FOR THE AIRBAG TO COME BACK ON AND RECOGNIZE THAT THERE IS A PERSON OVER THE MINIMAL WEIGHT REQUIREMENT OCCUPYING THE SEAT. THIS ISSUE HAVE CONTINUED TO OCCUR ON AND OFF THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. ON NOV. 6TH, I WAS IN AN ACCIDENT(REAR-ENDED) WITH NO MAJOR INJURIES. THAT ACCIDENT WAS LUCKILY NOT VERY SEVERE AND I AM VERY FORTUNATE THAT I DIDN'T HIT THE CAR THAT WAS IN FRONT OF ME AND NEEDED MY AIRBAG TO DEPLOY AND I WOULDN'T DUE TO A FAULTY AIRBAG SENSOR THAT WAS FINE UNTIL THE RECALL CAMPAIGN IN 2019. SO ON FRIDAY, NOV 13TH, I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AT THE DEALERSHIP AND WHEN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CALLED, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS IN FACT MY SENSOR INSIDE MY FRONT PASSENGER SEAT THAT IS MALFUNCTIONING. THIS DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL THE WIRING AND CONNECTOR WAS CHANGED IN DEC 2019. I HAVE CONTACTED THE CORPORATE OFFICE OF THE AUTO MAKER AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO PAY ANY PART OF THE COST TO HAVE THE SENSOR REPLACED AND I AM BEING QUOTED A REPAIR PRICE OF $1200 AND THAT'S JUST FOR THE PART ALONE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND I FEEL THAT SINCE THE COMPANY ISSUED A RECALL CAMPAIGN FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE WIRING AND CONNECTOR, THEY SHOULD DO THE SAME FOR THE AIRBAG SENSOR BEFORE A FATAL ACCIDENT OCCURS TO A PASSENGER OF THE SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THERE ARE CURRENTLY SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE EXACT SAME ISSUE POSTED ON THIS SITE AND SEVERAL OTHERS.

CHECK ENGINE/ EPC- BOTH LIGHTS HAVE SIGNALED A DOZEN TIMES. THE FIRST FEW TIMES THE DEALERSHIP CALLED THEM "MISFIRES". EVENTUALLY THE CAR "SYMPTOMS" STARTED TO PROGRESS: WHEN CAR IS IDLING, CAR STARTS TO ACT LIKE IT IS ABOUT TO STALL. THEN IT PROGRESSED TO HARD/JERKY SHIFTS INTO 1ST OR 2ND GEAR. NOW EVEN AT HIGHER SPEEDS IT STARTS ACTING UP- GIVING THE FEELING THAT THE CAR MAY STALL. THIS IS A DAILY ISSUE. TWICE NOW CAR HAS FAILED TO ACCELERATE WHILE ENTERING HIGHWAY. THE WORST SITUATION OCCURRED WHEN CAR WAS BUCKING AND REFUSING TO GO INTO 2ND GEAR. I HAD TO PULL OVER, ON THE ON-RAMP, TURN OFF CAR AND RESTART. DASH LIGHTS FADE LIGHT/DARK CONSTANTLY. ORIGINALLY I THOUGHT IT WAS AN AUTOMATIC FEATURE, GOING FROM DAY TO NIGHT TIME LIGHTS. LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IT HAS INCREASED W/ FREQUENCY & CANNOT BE CONNECTED TO CHANGE DAY/NIGHT LIGHT SETTING CHANGE. KEY FOB DIED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY, CAR STALLED ON HIGHWAY. I RESTARTED CAR USING EMERGENCY PROCEDURE (ALIGNING KEY FOB NEXT TO KEY SYMBOL ON DRIVE SHAFT)- THIS IS MEANT TO KEEP CAR RUNNING EVEN W/ DEAD KEY BATTERY. CAR SHUT OFF MULTIPLE TIMES WAITING FOR TOW TRUCK- WHO THEN LOADED MY CAR WHILE RUNNING BECAUSE IT STALLED ON HIM TOO. DID I MENTION THE 4 DAYS PRIOR MY CAR HAD BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP - SO EITHER WARNING SIGN DIDN'T CORRECTLY NOTIFY OR THEY JUST IGNORED IT. I WAS DRIVING AND SUDDENLY HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION ON THE TOP OF ME, THEN I SAW A MY SUNROOF CRACKED. I STOPPED TO CHECK ON IT AND I CONTINUED DRIVING FOR ABOUT A MILE UNTIL PART OF THE SUNROOF BLEW OFF AND HIT OTHER CARS. NOTHING HIT THE GLASS FOR IT TO BRAKE, IT SIMPLY EXPLODED FROM THE INSIDE OUT (PRESSURE-LIKE EXPLOSION). DEALER SAYS IT HAS NO RECALL AT THE MOMENT FOR MY VEHICLE BUT WHILE DOING MY RESEARCH, I FOUND OUT THAT AUDI CAR OWNERS HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM IN THE PAST WITH NO RESOLUTION YET. CHASSIS MIGHT CAUSE EXTRA TENSION ON SUNROOF CREATING IT TO EXPLODE, OR INSIDE PRESSURE IS TOO STRONG FOR THE GLASS TO RESIST. SUNROOF AND WINDOWS WERE UP (CLOSED) AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT.

I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW AUDI A3 2.0T 2015 JULY 2014. RECENTLY, WHILE DRIVING TO A SLUSHY SNOW, THE SYSTEM CAME UP WITH MULTIPLE ERROR. ON 1/12/2016, I WAS DRIVING THROUGH THE SLUSHY SNOW AND 3 ISSUES CAME UP. STABILIZATION CONTROL, TPMS ERROR, AND ABS ERROR, THE STABILIZATION CONTROL IS THE MAIN ISSUE. I WAS SERVING LEFT AND RIGHT WITH LIGHT TAP ON THE GAS WITH THE CAR. LUCKILY, I WAS IN THE LOCAL ROAD AND NOT IN THE HIGH WAY WHEN ISSUES OCCURRED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP SAME DAY, THE FOLLOWING DAY, I WAS NOTIFIED THAT IT WAS "FIXED". I GOT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND TURNED ON THE CAR, ALL THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. ISSUE WAS DUE TO A "FUSE" SHORTING. NOW I'M WAITING FOR A "CLUTCH PUMP" ALL THE WAY FROM GERMANY, EXPECTED 5-15 DAYS.

AT 5 MONTHS - ENGINE ALMOST OVERHEATED. CAR TOWED TO DEALER WHERE THEY FOUND THE FAN AND COMPUTER MODULE FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. AT 7 MONTHS (CURRENT ISSUE) - WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND ADVISED THAT BRAKES FAILED. DEALER FOUND THAT THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER FAILED. INTERNAL CAMERA SHOWED SEALS FAILED AND WERE LEAKING. THIS CAR IS TOO NEW FOR SUCH A MAJOR PART TO FAIL THIS WAY.

3 ISSUES: 1. AFTER INITIAL START-UP, THE CAR JUMPS GEARS AND JOLTS FORWARD FOR THE FIRST 3-5 MINUTES OF OPERATION, ESPECIALLY AT LOWER SPEEDS. THIS HAS BEEN CONSISTENT SINCE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW IN JANUARY 2015. 2. ALSO, AT HIGHER SPEEDS (65-85MPH), THE CAR SHAKES NOTICEABLY - THE WHEELS/TIRES HAVE BEEN ROTATED AND REALIGNED MULTIPLE TIMES BUT MECHANICS HAVE SAID IT IS AN INTERNAL TRANSMISSION ISSUE. 3. LASTLY, THE TPMS WILL COME ON EVERY MONTH AND NEED RESETTING DESPITE TIRE PRESSURE BEING INTACT.
