How to read a Audi A4 VIN — every digit explained

Every Audi A4 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH

  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

2017 A4

A few days ago i had an accident. I made a left turn onto the expressway ramp at 42 mph. The road was wet and audi in the middle of the turn activated “precrash sensors” and began to brake hard and the system locked the steering wheel. The car was completely uncontrollable and crashed the front wheel into the high curb, which damaged the wheels, rim and axles. The audi exchange dealership in il checked and the sensors are functioning properly. They claimed that i imagine things that do not exist as they said it was impossible for the car to take control and to brake the car. They also said i do not have theses feature on the car, but the car is so equipped with this technology. ( because many times it happened to me out of the car started to brake without a reason to brake, when i tried to go around bikers at the safe distance, or when parking. When i made the complaint in the audi dealer they told me that this is not possible, and laughed in june). I am aware that i was moving fast but from my experience i know that i could do this turn without an accident. Previously i owned a 2013 bmw 528 xdrive and the car several times slip on the snow and i could control the car still. I believe the presense sensors activates the collision avoidance system resulting in a loss of control in the car and subsequent accident.

2016 A4

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 audi a4. Upon activating the air conditioner, an abnormal burning odor emerged from the vents. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 36,000. The vin was not available.

2015 A4

The battery failed/malfunctioned and was leaking hydrogen sulfide gas into my car slowly for a long period of time. A month or two after I initially financed this used Audi A4 at Volkswagon in Dothan, AL, I started experiencing the side effects of low dose exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas. From that point until today my symptoms have been getting worse and worse. My asthma symptoms progressed. I caught walking pneumonia several times. My hair has been falling out in clumps and my kindneys are having serious issues. My pee started smelling very strange. Consistently, over the past year and a half, I have nearly passed out at the wheel of my car over and over. For a very long time, the gas was odorless and really couldn't be detected by smell. Five days ago I went to start my car and it wouldn't crank. I jumped it off and for the next five days following that the smell of rotten eggs got worse and worse....I'm lying in the bed right now bc my lungs feel like they're going to explode. I've felt this, along with my heart feeling like it was going to explode put of my chest, as well as my entire stomach/intestines feeling as if someone were stabbing me with knives. My doctors could not figure out why all of my hair was falling out or why I started to develop peripheral neuropathy. They even ran tests on me for Multiple Schlerosis. Found nothing. They did electrical pulse tests and cat scans and my dermatologist had no explanation for my hair just falling off my head in handfuls. I have a third of the hair on my head that I used to have. My skin and eyes consistently kept getting irritated by the gas as well....splotchy red exema like patches appeared all over me. I had a miscarriage because of this as well. I couldn't afford to get the car looked at, so it hasn't been taken anywhere. I received no warning of the problem until two days ago when my lights in my car and the air conditioner stopped working. The year of my life had been a living hell.

2013 A4

After run collant pump caught fire and damaged the engine wiring harness. I reported it to progressive insurance and they came and inspected it at a body shop. They concluded it was due to an open recall on the vehicle so insurance refuses to cover it. Had car towed to Audi dealership and they reported it to Audi USA. They came back and told me that because of the mileage and year of the vehicle that they wouldn't cover it.

2011 A4

Car was parked outside our apartment building. It was off and hadn't been driven in over 20hrs. At 11am a fire broke out in the rear driver side seat. Fire department arrived put out the fire, said it was not arson but rather electrical issue. The car front dash was partially melted, rear seat big char black seating material and showed exposed wires.

2009 A4

I own a 2009 audi a4. On the Month of october 2024 my transmission failed. I towed my car to a mechanic who then replaced my transmission i picked up my car on December 11 2024 at 7 am from audi of fresno. I have had no prior issues and like always i expect a dealership to inspect a new vehicle that comes in ,as i have never been able to get work done with out them always doing their own diagnostic. Any ways . On the morning of [XXX] at [XXX] i went to pic up breakfast from carls jr with my boyfriend . As i placed my order and drove up to the window without a single warning my car engulfed in flames from the front driver side . I turned my car off jumped out called. The fire department and watched as my car continued to build flames until the fire department finally showed up. Had i taken the freeway that day instead of the streets i wouldnt have noticed the fire until it was to late. . Im in shock and also just [XXX] that something like thus happened. Air Bags 15% 455 Read
2015 A4

Takata recall or nhtsa campaign id 14v66700 i was in an accident july 13 2018. My car's airbags did not deploy, 3 other cars involved in the accident airbags did deploy. Fireman at the scene told me "there is a recall on your car, did you know?" my market valuation report as my car was totaled, states there is a recall on this car. It states due to an improper algorithm in the airbag control module, if a crash necessitates deployment of the side airbags, a second impact to the front of the vehicle may not command the front air bags to also deploy and as a consequence further states, if the front air bags do not deploy in the event of a secondary impact to the front of the vehicle, there is an increased risk of occupant injury. Traffic was stopped on the highway and you could clearly see brake lights and the slowing of traffic for quite a distance. I travel this area regularly and am aware of the construction that causes traffice to slow. The truck ahead of me stopped, i was at a complete stop, the car behind me stopped then a a car hit me from behind, my car was pushed into another vehicle a car length ahead of me. My airbags did not deploy, my head hit the steering wheel. My car was also pushed sideways into the concrete divider. When i read the recall, it is exactly what happened in my car. My car was manufactured october 28, 2014. Why did they not deploy? Please advise as this was a serious situation and i am dealing with a brain injury. There was a fatality as well. *tt *dt *tr

2013 A4

Takata recall - rearended a stopped truck at approximately 30 mph. Car is totaled. Airbags didn't go off despite massive front end damage.

2013 A4

Rear ended a truck at a speed of approximately 30 mph on a highway and airbag did not deploy.

2009 A4

The negligent driver yielded to the flow of traffic without stopping. When he collided with us, the airbags (exploded) deployed so strongly that they damaged the windshield and our bodies: face, neck, etc. Our beloved Audi A4 2009 was totaled and after that we had several operations: 2 eye operations (need 2 more), dental surgeries, 3 neck surgeries ... multiple unpaid medical expenses.

2005 A4

The airbags in our 2005 Audi A4 were recalled. We had the airbag replaced due to the recall in Audi of Stratham, 58 Portsmouth Ave, Stratham, NH 03885 in February 2023. On 12/8/23, my daughter was involved in a serious front-end collation with another vehicle. The airbags in the Audi did not deploy. The other vehicle (which sustained less damage) did deploy. Without the airbags, her face hit the steering wheel, causing a large laceration to her eyelid and significant bruising and swelling to her face.

2005 A4

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 audi a4. The contact stated that while driving 10 mph, another vehicle crashed into the front driver's side of the his vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. At the time, the front passenger side air bag deployed, but the driver's side air bag did not. As a result, the driver was injured as well as the passenger in the other vehicle. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the cause of the failure has not yet been determined. The contact was unsure if the vehicle was destroyed. The current and failure mileages were 70,000.

2003 A4

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 audi a4. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds and switching lanes, another vehicle driving at high speeds crashed into the rear of the vehicle. The other vehicle then spun around and crashed into the front of the vehicle impacting the drivers side and the front passengers side. The air bags did not deploy. The rear passengers seat belt restrained a child passenger tightly who then received ash marks and light abrasions from the impact. The drivers head hit the steering wheel that cause extensive head aches that required medical attention. The child passenger and the driver were taken for medical testing. The vehicle was towed by the insurance company and then towed to the contacts residence. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Takata recall i have a 2003 audi a4 i was sideswiped recently causing significant amount of driver side damage which one of the airbags deployed i'm suffering from the injury

2003 A4

Our brand new 2003 audi a4 was rear-ended by a ford f-550 traveling at approx. 55 mph. The ford f-550 did not brake before impact and hit the audi with such force that it impacted the vehicle immediately in front which hit that vehicle in front of it. All were stopped for a traffic light. My wife, the only occupant and driver, had to be cut out of the audi. She suffered permanent brain injury as a result of hitting the rear-view mirror and windshield. She also suffered numerous other injuries. She hit the steering wheel with such force as to bend the bottom of the wheel inward. My complaint...the driver air-bag did not deploy while the passenger side air-bag did deploy. Had the drivers side air-bag deployed, she may have not suffered brain injury from this event. I've contacted audi several times for an explanation with "bs" answers. I finally told them that they should have at least given her a new car. Perhaps i'm a bit naive. In any event, i'm certain that the air-bag should have deployed had it been working properly. *nm

The MMI or infotainment center turns off and reboots/kicks user out while the car is in motion and also while stopped. The MMI going off has cut out while backing up not allowing the rear camera to be used and has also not allowed the front and rear sensors to be used for parking/auto breaking. There seems to be a large portion of similar complaints and unknown fixes for 2020 models either exactly the same or similar. Personally have not had it inspected or attempted to fix outside the recommended soft reset, user account reset, and even unplugging battery to reset as well. No fix has been identified or has proven to not cause the issue from recurring. This has occurred more frequently in past week or so ~15Jun where it rebooted once in an two drive, 16Jun no reboots for 1.5 hour min drive, 17Jun one reboot for 1.5 hour drive, and 19Jun where it rebooted 7 times in 2 hour drive. There is no warning and seems to be random or when on full screen maps through Android Auto.

The headlights on my 2017 Audi A4 have developed stress cracks in the headlamp housing. According to the inspection performed by an authorized Audi dealer, these cracks will obscure headlight projection and lower the visibility range at night. The dealer specifically noted there were no signs of outside influence or misuse, and the issue is likely due to internal headlight temperature, external ambient temperature, and age. This defect directly impairs visibility and makes it unsafe to drive the vehicle at night or in low-light conditions. Headlights are a critical safety system. The problem has been confirmed and documented by the Audi dealership in a written inspection report. Audi of America has acknowledged that the defect is unrelated to misuse but refuses to fully assist with repairs, despite admitting it impacts visibility. The issue is ongoing and worsens with time. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages related to the defect prior to its discovery. The vehicle and documentation are available for inspection upon request. This is a safety concern that puts me and others at risk due to reduced nighttime visibility.

2017 A4

I have been an Audi A4 owner for more than 10 years. During that time, I have had 2 incidents where I could have easily been killed as well as injured or killed passengers in oncoming vehicles. The latest was this morning on March 23, 2022. The other was nearly 10 years ago. My personal investigation has led me to a conclusion that I have not yet seen anywhere else. In both cases, I am trying to get into a heavy flow of traffic. I know that I will have to "gun it" to get up to speed. For that reason, I have one foot on the accelerator and one on the brake. When traffic opens to where I think it is safe to proceed, I press the accelerator while my foot is still on the brake. In the situation this morning, I intended to execute a sharp right turn into the closest lane of a road with 2-lanes going in that direction. I pressed the accelerator hard while turning the steering wheel. Instead of turning right, the car shot across both lanes of traffic, wiped out a traffic sign and entered the lanes of oncoming traffic. I had zero control. It was only dumb luck that I avoided traffic in both directions (both of which were travelling at roughly 60 mph). Even though I knew about this risk from my earlier incident, I didn't think about it at the time. I realize that my actions send conflicting signals to the car (go/don't go), but the last thing the car should do is propel itself forward with no control on the part of the driver. I don't know if this is limited to Audi or the A4, but I wanted to make my experience public to possibly avoid a serious or fatal accident by someone else. It is very avoidable with proper knowledge and attention. I'd be interested in knowing if you have been notified of any other incidents of this type.

Oil consumption i had this car since 2012 and found out recently about oil consumption class action lawsuit through the internet, when my car started consuming copious amounts of oil. The owner manual says a quart per ~1,200 miles, but i'm getting oil light at about 400 miles after service at the dealership. I spoke with multiple dealerships including the dealership i'm currently doing every 10k maintenance with and none have actually helped me out since i'm out of warranty of 80k. I spoke with audi corporate and they say they will review when they get to my case which is pretty much never. They keep telling me to take my car in to do phase 2 oil consumption which is going to be a several grand repair. I did phase 1 out of pocket roughly 1,700 and they fixed pcv breather valve, seal and updated software after i replaced the pcv breather valve recently, but they said the valve is old, so they replaced with newer one, but still pretty much doing the same thing and that's consuming oil. Audi corporate say they will "review" my case which pretty much means i pay out of pocket and then they'll see which i doubt. This car is literally a headache never buying an audi again. Audi is crooked and they do not want to repair even though they know about these problems. I know they're trying to bait me into repairing the car further which will ultimate lead to a 10k engine replacement and that's not going to happen not on my dime.

'takata recall' i made appointments and registered to get my airbag replaced on numerous occasions. In june i made an appointment at the elmwood park location and when i got their the guy lied and said the computers are down he didn't want to help me. They have the parts available and don't want to fix it it is now 2018 and no one from audi called me and my vehicle is registered with them. So my air bag can rupture at any time i was in a car accident on 1/4/17 i was intentionally rear ended by a white bmw and i was in the car with my 8 year old nephew and mom who was in the front passenger seat i could have been killed and seriously injured. Not only that my gas tank fuel injector the air pressure is off causing it to stop constantly while getting gas. Third i had this p2005 and p2006 error code which is the intake air exchange manifold flap check engine light on which is a manufacturing error when i went to get it replaced costing me 1,800 the light is still on and the same error code is back 2 months later nothing was fixed on my car period and on 10/31/17 i went to audi in upper saddle river and they did not fix it either of find a dealer with the airbag near by that has the parts to replace it tho could have cost me and my passengers their life and this isn't unacceptable for audi to treat customers like that regardless of my vehicle being old new or brought from a third party dealership all audi owners should be treated equally and remedies be address according to law and recall. Being that a safety recall is issued customer preference is null and void because safety and wealth has no bearing in who gets first dibs on airbags no audi owner should get preference over the other whether it be they brought their car directly from the audi dealership or not and that the impression i'm getting and based on my experience not all customers and owner are treated equally

This caused axle problems. When they replaced bolts they did not have bushings in stock and they released car without these bushings which is a safety violation. When bushings came in they refused to work on our vehicle and we had to go to different mechanic. They told us we needed timing belt when the headgasket was blown. Now there is new recall for coil packs and they refuse to work on our car. The new gm is listening to the service mgr. Who is not telling the complete story nor is the new gm reviewing the facts. The "check engine" light on my 2001 audi a4 quattro came on and was running somewhat roughly. I called the dealerships service department and they told me to bring it in. On the 8-mile freeway drive the engine caught fire and destroyed the engine. *tr

2001 A4

Owner was driving vehicle when smoke started to come from the dashboard. Examination revealed that a rubber body plug in the right front towboard ignited due to an overheated exhaust system, causing a fire that burned on the right front floor and upward into the dash. Spark plugs showed an engine management system problem existed that caused the overheated exhaust. *tr

2009 A4

Parked in an incline, i attempted to back out of a drive way. I placed my foot on the brake and placed the car in reverse and removed my foot from the brake. The vehicle went forward as if in neutral with no resistance at all. I stepped on the brake quickly to prevent from going through the garage door. Although i depressed the accelerator the car was not moving in reverse. I had to get the engine rpm up fairly high to get the car to move at all. It was like i had the parking brake on but if i let up on the accelerator, the car would again roll forward. When the car reached the top of the drive, it quickly grabbed and accelerated. I stepped on the brake quickly but not before i hit a retaining wall behind me. This type of hesitation has also been experienced when in drive. Depressing the accelerator does not produce immediate results. Then starts to increase rpm's an then the car lunges forward. I have returned it to the audi dealer a few months ago for this exact problem. When the service man moved my car he immediately noticed the condition but it was returned to me "working as designed". For the next 2-3 months, the transmission was as responsive as any other auto but this has changed back to the way it was. Updated ivoq 10/26/10 *tr

2004 A4

Vehicle is having a problem with the transmission. Owner has leased this vehicle in june 2004. When the vehicle is in reverse, it will not move then suddenly the engine will accelerate and a click and pop sound will be heard and then the vehicle will surge backward. Owner had taken the vehicle to the dealership and they could not duplicate the problem. Instead the transmission was replaced because it was said at that time that they were aware of the problem but could not repair it. Provide further details.

2002 A4

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 audi a4. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 mph she heard a loud popping noise and smoke came from underneath the hood. The contact was unable to drive the vehicle and it was towed to a dealer. They dealer advised her that the differential in the transmission overheated and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and offered to buy her vehicle for $500. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was approximately 105,000.

2002 A4

An accident occured in my 2002 audi a4 with the new-for-2002 cvt transmission (continuously variable transmission) resulting from a condition that i believe is defective relating to the function of the transmission. After depressing the accelerator from a dead stop, there is a long lag between before the vehicle begins to move. As a result, in order to accelerate quickly in traffic, one must press the accelerator all the way to the floor in advance. This can cause serious problems if one must quickly stop, right after starting. In this case, my fiance accidentally hit the rear of the car in front of her at a light when they quickly stopped just after starting.

2001 A4

1. We were stuck in traffic on an incline for a period of approximately 5 to 10 minutes slowly approaching the caldecott tunnel (cal. Highway 24-east bound) which was backed up. I was required to push our manual clutch in an out repeatedly during the backup, but was very careful not to "ride" the clutch. 2. Twice in a period of 12 months, the special "dual clutch" flywheel and clutch assembly began to catch fire. In the first instance, the car became inoperative and had to be towed. In the second instance i was able to get off the freeway to prevent further damage and danger, but the car was again inoperative. It is undoubtedly the defective flywheel design which is catching fire since the clutch in the first instance had just been replaced. 3. In both instances within the 12-month period, the entire flywheel and clutch system had to be replaced even though the clutch was still operative. The expense was approximately $3000 for each repair since audi claimed this was "driver error." (the repair parts are available.) this is a preposterous claim since i have been driving manual transmission vehicles successfully for 40+ years without having similar problems as experienced with the fire-prone audi flywheel. Similar complaints and experiences are reported on the internet all over the country on various forums. All such reports detail a similar denial of responsibility by audi. *tr

2000 A4

2001 audi a4 began to smoke. Drove 5 minutes to a friend's house and parked in driveway, consumer went inside of house, and car was sitting for 20 minutes. Then, someone knocked, and told consumer that car was sitting in the middle of traffic. Car disengaged on its own, and almost ran over two children. Took to dealer, and they said back brake pads, and rotors were burned to a crisp. No conclusion to why this happened or why car rolled into traffic on its own.*ak also, the brake pedal went to the floor when the consumer applied the brakes. The consumer's investigation showed that there were numerous reports about spongy brakes regarding this vehicle. The consumer feels unsafe driving this vehicke but the dealer and the manufacturer could not find solution to the problem. *yh

2021 A4

I am writing to report a persistent issue with my 2021 Audi A4, VIN [XXX] . I have been experiencing a noticeable vibration, humming, and shuddering sensation that occurs specifically when turning at slow speeds (e.g., in a parking lot or when making a tight turn at an intersection). This issue has been diagnosed at a dealership, and the diagnostic report from the service invoice dated 07/12/2025 noted "VIBRATION HUMMING SHUDDER WHILE TURNING." The vehicle's mileage at the time was 38,888 miles. Dealership diagnosed this issue as a failing AWD clutch system. I took the car to a different repair shop, and they redirected me to the Audi Technical Service Bulletin (TSB). The symptoms described in the TSB—"vibrations, humming, droning, or rubbing can be heard and/or felt in the vehicle interior... when the steering wheel is turned to full lock"—perfectly matches my experience. TSB Link - [XXX] The vehicle details are: Model: Audi A4 Year: 2021 VIN: [XXX] Current Mileage: 39490 Since this is an issue due to a sub-optimal part shipped by Audi, many other Audi owners are also facing similar issues. Therefore, I want to report this issue to the NHTSA and take action on cars sold by Audi. This issue divert driver attention and is a potential cause of accident while taking the turn as driver may get distracted. I already got my car serviced at Audi dealership but they didn't inform me about this issue while the car was under warranty. Now the car is out of warranty after Apr-2025, I'm facing this issue significantly and dealership is charging close to $5000 to fix the issue. Please let me know what information you require from me to proceed. I would like Audi to place a recall on the car models facing this issue and implement the fix for all owners facing the issue because of faulty part shipped by Audi of America. The vehicle at 13,xxx miles on the high ways, and during stop & go traffic; vehicle begins to tremble, transmission and floor shakes, rpms are higher than normal, abnormal noises coming from engine (screeching), jerking on acceleration on the first gears, rough idle, happens only on highways after 1hr of driving. Can drive over 40 min without any check engine light turning on. No codes come up, while clearly having issues. After a day of being off, car goes back to normal without those issues, just vibrations and pulsing on idle. -happens on Texas highways where vehicle begins to have trouble with acceleration and transmission shakes yet no check engine or error messages appear. -problem has been shown to one Audi dealer while happening and another Audi dealer was able to reproduce the problem. They even noted how vehicle will do all the issues noted above while not providing any error codes or messages. - vehicle has been inspected but all they do is reset software and hand back keys. While issues are still prevalent. - no warning, no over heat or any codes appear on the vehicle. Issues started at 13,xxx miles. Only on long highway or stop and go traffic does it happens
