How to read a Audi 100 VIN — every digit explained
Every Audi 100 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Audi and the country it was built in (real Audi codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 100.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- GermanyWA1 · WAU · WU1 · WUA
- HungaryTRU
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your 100, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

Fuel System 18 Read
Consumer states that prior to recall on the fuel line, this problem caused a major fire in the engine. *jg
Engine fire prior to recall. Consumer states prior to fire there were several occasions of raw gasoline smell when starting vehicle. Also states recall has not yet been initiated, however recall went into effect 3/99, owner did not receive notification. (98v-332)
While parked and locked in supermarket parking lot 5 min. After parking, engine compartment spontaneously broke into flames. Owner was shopping in supermarket. Fire company responding to 911 extinguished the fire. Insurance and audi representatives determine car is not repairable. Believed caused by defective fuel injectors. This problem is pending recall; but owner was not notified nor made aware of hazard to life and limb. What is manufacturer responsibility to owner?
While driving vehicle it caught fire. Owner notes that fuel lines which were leaking caused fire. *ak
Prior to recall notification (00v084000) consumer had repairs performed due to engine compartment having a major fuel leak, consumer is now seeking reimbursement. *jb
Consumer received recall notice in february, and has been trying to contact dealer to make appointment, but was told by dealer(valley motors in tiominium, md tele 410-666-7777)that no parts were available.in meantime, consumer was driving an unsafe vehicle .*ak *slc
Fuel line, where it connects to hose, is dripping fuel onto engine, causing potential fire hazard.*ak
When backing out of the garage, owner smelt a strong smell of gasoline. When owner checked under the hood, could see gas leaking from the briaded fuel line. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where it was repaired. *ak
For several years i have been complaining of an intermittent, very strong fuel smell. Audi has never been able to tell me why this occurs. It has been present transiently and it has been present for prolonged periods of time. The smell, when present, is extremely strong. This is not related to and is entirely different from the "sulfur" smell that is frequently present in the winter. On one occassion, it was present for almost a whole week after the car sat for the preceeding week without being driven. I had to keep the windows open continuously in order to avoid gagging. Audi claims that my car is not part of the current recall regarding the leaking fuel injector. I would appreciate your help in discovering the cause of this problem and in remedying it finally. Thank you.
After a strong smell of gas, owner inspected engine and found gas leaking on the engine. A factory pressed metal fitting was leaking and the entire fuel line had to be replaced.

The car has stalled out without any warning numerous times when driving at highway speed, the first occurance dealer replaced a radiator switch, and two days later vehicle stalled again.*jb
No summary listed for abov evehicle. *ak
Timing belt, pulley and tensioner failed.
Material in the catalytic converter comes loose and clogs the converter, causes a rattling or rasping sound and could lead to engine damage.
Previous owner exchanged left side catalytic converter (under audi recall - right side converter not included in recall). Car started vibrating and engine overheated. Catalytic converter found to be clogged internally - same fault as with recalled left side. Cost $1500 to replace not under warranty. Major safety concern due to potentially severe engine damage caused by clogged exhaust on one side.
Water pump failed at 60 mph with no previous indication or symptoms. All appeared normal . Timing belt was destroyed and valves bent, major engine damage.
Catalytic converter emits odor inside of vehicle.

Transmission failure resulting in leaking.
Cv boot failed.
Transmission; when driving on a wet road the transmission down shift feels like as if you were pressing down on the brake you can loose control of car. Tt
Transmission has no dipstick to check accuracy of fluid, as a result consumers' transmission failed. Dealers still claim a dipstick is not necessary. *jg
Automatic shift selector had a plastic internal part brake. Could be placed in drive without depressing brake pedal.
Transmission disengaged while travelling at highway speed. *tw
Automatic transmission broke down with less than 40,000 miles, without any kind of warning. The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt transmission by the dealership (sunset imports). *ak.*yh
The consumer is having transmission problems.please describe. Tt
Transmission failed, causing vehicle to bang into reverse gear/engine to race/sudden acceleration. *skd
Differential leaked oil into the transmission which damaged the gears. *ak a recall was issued related to the problem the consumer's vehicle experienced but the vehicle was not included due to vin. *nm
Vehicle Speed Control 13 Read
While driving on dry surface, on a clear day, at 25 mph, vehicle suddenly accelerated out of control, hit guard railing and came to a stop.
While driving vehicle had uncontrolled sudden accleration, occurred at 40mph the pedal went to floor and brake would not override.vehicle had to be put in neutral to stop.*ak
Sudden acceleration, resulting in loss of control/accident. *ak
When driving and upon depressing accelerator pedal for no apparent reason vehicle will lose all power unexpectedly, causing vehicle to go into a drift due to sudden decrease in speed. Engine continued revving without any forward movement. Consumer contacted the dealer, dealer unable to determine the cause. Please provide any further details. *ak
Throttle linkage and control failed.
While driving, the accelerator pedal came apart - the complete top broke off, fell to the side and lodged behind the remainder of accelerator mechanism. Luckily, i was able to stop the car and extract it without injury. Audi claims this is normal wear and tear. They have refused to cover the repair. Why is this not a manufacturing defect?
92 audi 100s, stuck throttle and brake boost failure, previously reported. Found the problem and am posting it here. This can kill someone. I hope nhtsa does something. Audi usa will not. See below: found the problem. Mangled plastic debris in the throttle body that would hang up the plate intermittently. Shame on me for calling it acceleration when it was actually a stuck throttle. What i learned is that the small brief throttle stabs you do to keep going uphill or in traffic can result in very high rpms if the throttle sticks at max excursion. It makes you think the engine is accelerating. Shame on audi for never examining the throttle body and ignoring the problem posed by the disintegrating plastic neck on the valve i mentioned in earlier posts. The disintegration of that thin plastic neck apparently can result in simultaneous stuck throttle (from debris getting sucked into throttle body and preventing the throttle plate from returning to idle position) and loss of brake boost through the vacuum leak caused by the broken neck. Btw, the brakes would not stop the car on the last runaway (about 5500 rpm), just got it down to about 20 mph even when i was standing on them, had to shift into neutral (which took the rpms to redline and limiter) and turn off the key. That really surprised me. This problem could easily kill someone. I have notified audi usa and nhtsa but nobody has taken any action. I don't know what more i can do to prevent a tragedy. Remember, two others have reported runaway/ stuck throttles on 92 100s. Hopefully the debris would eventually get sucked out of the throttle body and chewed up in the engine, but mine didn't. It had to be found and dislodged manually. While it remains in the throttle body, it is a disaster waiting to happen. *tr
While driving, a sudden surge in speed caused i believe bythe automatic activation of the cruise control feature on my 1992 audi cs 100. I hit my brakes, shiftedmy automatic transmission to neutral and stomped the accelerator several times until the engine stopped racing. I checked to see if the cruise control was in the off position, it was. The same thing occured several more times before i had the cruise control disconnected, after which the car drove normally.
Sudden acceleration occurs intermittently.
The accelerator pedal has a plastic part connected to it when this part breaks off the entire accelerator pedal has to be replaced. *yh
Electrical System 12 Read
I am a senior citizen, 87 years young, who owns a 1994 audi 100. I am the second owner. According to audi of america, my vehicle was eligible for an ignition switch recall and a new switch was installed in 1996 at tyson's audi in tysons corner, va. My concern is this. I am experiencing the identical electrical problems listed in the original recall. The dealer tells me my problem the ignition switch and it needs to be replaced. Isn't that a bit odd? Are ignition switches parts that usually need to be replaced? Have other owners of the recall experienced that same problem? Was the original replacement a new type/model switch? I called audi of america and talked to them about my concern. They told me they have not received any complaints. I thought it best to at least register a complaint. Thanks for you time! *tr
Consumer's vehicle experienced the same problem as mentioned in recall 96v071000 concerning ignition switch. Dealership would not repair the problem free of charge, because the vin was not included.*ak
The ignition freezes in the start position which causes difficulty in starting the vehicle. This vehicle is not included in recall 96v017000 concerning ignition failure. *ak
Vehicle will not start due to ignition switch / headlights/ radio/ power windows, and all electrical features being inoperable. Vehicle not included in recall 96v017000 due to vin. Please give any further details.*ak
Ignition switch failed. See nhtsa campaign id 96v017000. Exact same defect. Seems like too much of a coincidence that my car, built 9/93 wouldn't have same switch component w/ same problem. But my car is not covered?? Audi ignores me. *ak
Audi issued recall for some a6 models on failed ignition switch. The 1994 100s is essentially the same car with probably same switch. According to my shop they have seen tons of these. Yet i have to pay because my car is a '94, instead of 1995 and 1996 makes no sense.*ak
Ignition switch failed, recall component however vehicle denied due to vin #.
Steering wheel started smoking, and had an electrical smell. Also, local dealer has had exact incidents with other automobiles with the same make/model and year. Effect is that the entire steering electrical system can catch fire or burn out. *ak

Air Bags 8 Read
Tl* the contact owns a 1993 audi 100 cs quarto.(n/a) the contact was driving at 20 mph when he traveled over an extremely uneven road surface. The transmission oil pan fractured from the vehicle and the driver side air bag independently deployed. The passenger seat belt then autonomously released and caused the contact to abruptly hit the windshield. The passenger suffered injuries to his eyes, head and nose. The contact sustained injury to his knee from abruptly striking the bottom of the steering wheel. He sustained second degree burns to his arms and hands. A police report was available. The dealer contact was able to locate a recall pertaining to the air bag failure (nhtsa campaign id number: 97v172000: air bags: frontal: sensor/control module) but was advised by the dealer that his vin was not included in the recall. The manufacturer advised they would send an investigator to further inspect the failure. The investigator determined that the failure was caused by defective struts. The manufacturer advised they would not provide any assistance because the contact failed to have the struts changed. The contact did not believe the struts were the cause of the failure and were replaced less than 20,000 miles before the failure occurred. The vehicle was not repaired and was still in the dealer's possession. The failure and current mileage was 186,000. Updated 12/01/2010. *lj updated 12/08/10
The vehicle was involved in a front collision accident due to the brakes not operating. The air bags did not deploy upon impact as well. Manufacturer was contacted by consumer. *nm
While driving at 35 mph the vehicle had a direct frontal impact in which the airbags did not deploy. Thus, failing to protect the occupant in this accident. Cause unknown. Please provide details. *ak

Dt: there was a recall but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. Air bags did not deploy. However, air bag light was on. Dealer has not looked at vehicle. The light came on june 15, 2005, and it stayed on. *ak
I?ve a 92 audi 100 cs quatro, vin [xxx]. It appears that nhtsa recall id 97172000 would cover this car, as the vin number is in the range of applicable vehicles. As i write this, the dealer is replacing this part, the airbag controller, because the diagnostics has indicated that it has failed. This appears to fit with this recall. However, when i talk to the dealer (checkered flag, virginia beach, va) and the audi service line they say that this recall does not apply to this vehicle. But they cannot tell me why. They plug it into the computer and it says it doesn't apply. Nobody can tell me if the recall was applied. And the range on the recall document says: [xxx] - [xxx] which certainly seems to fit by vin number (see above) my compliant ? Either the recall is not being honored or the recall has already been applied and nobody in the audi can confirm that it has been applied. I've only had this vehicle for a year. So i can't confirm that it wasn't applied. However, your system, should keep track if a particular car has had the recall applied. The consequences are that i've got to pay $1300 for the part and $300 for installation. I would like audi to (a) show me the recall was applied or (b) refund me $1600 (or so) for the part and labor that you charged me. *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Runaway throttle. Uncommanded engagement of cruise control? Would not respond to brake or shutting cruise control off on steering column stalk switch. Very dangerous!!! Almost caused a crash, very ineffective braking with engine trying to keep car going at about 55 mph, but i managed to pull over and shut car off. I pulled the cruise control fuse and problem has not reappeared. I am an electrical engineer.
Dangerous uncommanded acceleration. I submitted a complaint earlier today that said i thought it was a cruise control problem but it isnt. It happened again today with the cc fuse pulled!!! It was preceded by a funny feeling in the brakes, like not enough vacuum boost, then radical engine acceleration even with my foot off the gas pedal. I put the car in neutral, the tach redlined and then i shut off the ignition. Started it and it did it again. I am an engineer and never believed the stories about audis and unintended acceleration... But now i know it can happen and it is super dangerous!!!!
The rear speaker had blown, which caused the entire system to fail, there was a recall regarding the issue # 01v324000, however the vehicle identification number was not included. *jb
