TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 BMW 323I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO REVERSE. ON ONE OCCASION, THE FAILURE OCCURRED AND CAUSED A FENDER BENDER WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH AN UNKNOWN BMW DEALER AND AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE REVERSE DRUM FAILED DUE TO DEFECTIVE METAL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE PARTS WERE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000.

THE VEHICLE HAS A HARD TIME REVERSING, I CAN COMMAND IT TO REVERSE BUT SOMETIMES NOTHING HAPPENS LIKE IT IS IN NEUTRAL, THE CAR IS A 2000 AND ONLY HAS 96K MILES. THIS PAST MONTH I HAVE SPOKEN WITH BMW ABOUT THE ISSUE. I LET THEM KNOW I FEEL IT POSES A SAFETY RISK BUT THEY SAID THEY CANNOT HELP ME. EVEN THOUGH IT IS CLEARLY A MFG. DEFECT. JUST HOPING TO HAVE AN ADVOCATE TO HELP ME. THE CAR IS STATIONARY ON A STREET.

I was driving normally, and made a right hand turn onto a street when the driver door airbag and driver curtain airbag deployed suddenly. The engine shut off and the hazards turned on automatically, and I pulled off the road to a safe location. I was able to restart the engine to bring the vehicle onto the tow truck. As far as I am aware there was no impact, and the outside of the car is not damaged. I am able to see some other NHTSA reports of this random deployment happening with other 3 series models, specifically 2000 model year vehicles like mine. I am unsure of what caused this, I can only assume a faulty sensor is the cause.

The contact owns a 2000 BMW 323i. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 MPH, the passenger’s side air bag deployed but did not inflate. There was no crash to cause the air bag to deploy. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was notified of several recalls regarding the driver’s side air bags however, there was no recall on the passenger’s side air bags. The VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V853000 (Air Bags). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 139,000.

TAKATA RECALL. THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THE INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME OF THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AND YEAR OF BMW. IT EXPERIENCES RUST ISSUES FREQUENTLY. I NEED TO REPLACE SUBFRAME DO TO THIS AND WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. THIS HAS HAPPENED OVER THE YEARS, IT HAS NOT BEEN STATIONARY OR ANYTHING OF THAT MATTER. IT HAS BEEN USED AS A DAILY DRIVER, AS THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN TO A DAILY DRIVER SUBFRAME, SPECIALLY FROM A BMW.

323I BMW 4 DOOR, 2000. MAJOR PROBLEM WITH ALL MY POWER WINDOWS GOING OUT. THE SERVICE REP AT THE DEALER JUST SHRUGS HIS SHOULDERS AND SAYS "IT HAPPENS". I SAID THAT FOUR POWER WINDOWS TO GO OUT IN SIX YEARS IS EXCESSIVE. THREE OF WHICH ARE HARDLY EVER USED SINCE I AM THE ONLY ONE EVER IN THE CAR. HE REPLIED THAT YOU DON'T BUY A BMW TO BE EASY ON THE CHECKBOOK. I SAID I BOUGHT ONE BECAUSE I THOUGHT THEY WERE RELIABLE. HE ACTED LIKE THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. 6/20/06 RIGHT REAR WINDOW REGULATOR WENT OUT $394.16, 9/2/04 DRIVERS WINDOW REGULATOR WENT OUT $340.43, 10/27/03 PASSENGER WINDOW REGULATOR WENT OUT APPROX. $350, 10/27/03 SUNROOF WINDOW FAILED AND THEY DID A TEMPORARY FIX AT A COST OF $264.54 AND SAID IT WAS NOT GUARANTEED. IT WOULD COST AN ADDITIONAL $1665! APPARENTLY ALL THE SLIDERS WERE BROKEN. I PROBABLY ONLY OPENED THE SUNROOF A DOZEN TIMES IN THE THREE YEAR PERIOD, THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE OUT WITH SUCH LITTLE USE. NONE OF THESE WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY SINCE THEY ALL OCCURRED THREE YEARS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW. I HAVE HAD MANY OTHER THINGS GO OUT IN THIS CAR COSTING CLOSE TO $10,000 TO REPAIR IN THE PAST SIX YEARS. SEEMS EXCESSIVE TO ME. LAST TIME I COMMENTED ON THIS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP SAID QUOTE "IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE FROM HERE". I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANOTHER BMW. *JB

HAVING PROBLEMS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING DOORS! KEY WILL NOT UNLOCK DRIVER'S DOOR, MANUALLY OR WITH REMOTE. IN ORDER TO ENTER CAR I HAVE TO LEAVE ONE DOOR UNLOCKED. CAN'T EVEN LOCK NOR UNLOCK DOORS FROM INSIDE EITHER. THIS IS PATHETIC! THERE'S A SEVERE PROBLEM WITH THIS ISSUE REGARDING THE LOCKS ON THE CAR THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A RECALL!

I OWN A BMW 323I SEDAN 2000. ALL OF 4 WINDOW REGULATORS HAVE BROKEN AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. ONCE THE WINDOW SHATTERED AND GLASS FELL INTO THE CAR B/C THE REGULATOR BROKE. WHEN I HAD THE REGULATORS REPLACED I THOUGHT THEY WERE BEING REPLACED WITH A NON-DEFECTIVE PART. HOWEVER, TODAY ONE OF THE REPLACEMENT WINDOW REGULATORS BROKE. I AM CONCERNED B/C OF THE HISTORY OF THE GLASS BREAKING. I HAVE A CHILD THAT OFTEN RIDES IN THE BACK SEAT AND I AM WORRIED THAT SHE MAY GET HURT IF THE WINDOW BREAKS ON HER.

THE DOOR LOCKS ON MY CAR FAIL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY, NOW ALMOST EVERY DAY. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN THE DOORS, EXCEPT THE DRIVERS' DOOR, FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR ON MY BMW 323 CIC (MODEL YEAR 2000) REGULARLY FAILS TO UNLOCK PREVENTING PASSENGERS ENTRY OR EXIT THROUGH THIS DOOR. I REPLACED THE ACTUATOR ON THE PASSENGER DOOR AND THE DOOR STILL FAILS TO UNLOCK REGULARLY USING ALL POSSIBLE MEANS AVAILABLE, I.E. KEY FOB, INTERIOR UNLOCK BUTTON, OR PULLING REPEATEDLY ON THE DOOR HANDLE TO ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE DOOR. THEY ALL FAIL LEAVING THE PASSENGER (FRONT & BACK SINCE I OWN A TWO DOOR) TRAPPED IN THE CAR AND FORCED TO CLIMB OUT THE DRIVER'S DOOR AFTER ALL OTHER PASSENGERS HAVE LEFT THE CAR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR PASSENGERS IN MY CAR WHO ARE HANDICAPPED, RECOVERING FROM SURGERY, NOT IN GOOD PHYSICAL SHAPE TO CLIMB OVER THE MIDDLE CONSOLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE OR IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. THIS ALSO IS A COMMON ISSUE ON THIS MODEL WHICH BMW HAS NOT ACKNOWLEDGED AND INITIATED A VOLUNTARY RECALL TO FIX. WE HAVE A SAFETY ISSUE WITH OUR BMW 323I YEAR 2000. THE ELECTRIC DOOR LOCKS WILL ACTUATE AND THEN YOU CANNOT GET OUT OF THE CAR THROUGH 3 OR 4 DOORS. THE ELECTRIC LOCKS WILL NOT DISENGAGE AND YOU CANNOT RELEASE THEM WITH THE HANDLE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. PASSENGERS ARE BASICALLY TRAPPED INSIDE THE CAR AND HAVE TO CLIMB OVER THE FRONT SEAT TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECURRING FREQUENTLY. AFTER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, WE ARE USUALLY ABLE TO GET THE LOCKS TO WORK. I FOUND 10 COMPLAINTS FILED ON THIS SAME ISSUE WITH ONE DEATH AND 3 INJURIES RESULTING FROM THIS MALFUNCTION. LOCK/LATCH MECHANISM SOMETIMES MALFUNCTIONS, SUCH THAT YOU CANNOT UNLOCK PASSENGER SIDE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE. WHEN THAT HAPPENS, AT LEAST I CAN USE THE MANUAL KEY TO OPEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. BUT BMW HAS THE FORESIGHT TO NOT INCLUDE A KEY OPENING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. The contact owns a 2000 BMW 323I. The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds, an abnormal rattling noise would emit from the rear end of the vehicle without warning. Upon inspection, the contact discovered part of the rear driver’s side subframe had detached from the undercarriage of the vehicle. The contact called the dealer about the failure and they offered no assistance. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 205,721

ON MY 2000 BMW 323I WITH ABOUT 100K MILES I NOTICED A CREAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR SUSPENSION. UPON INSPECTION, THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR DIFFERENTIAL MOUNT HAS SEPARATED AT THE POINT WHERE THE MOUNT IS WELDED TO THE UNI-BODY. THIS SITUATION IS VERY DANGEROUS AND REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. THE SUSPENSION SHOULD NEVER SEPARATE FROM THE BODY BECAUSE OF FORCES FROM THE TRANS/DIFF. IT IS CLEAR THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW. I PERSONALLY HAVE A LIST OF OVER 150 NAMES WITH DOCUMENTED SUBFRAME CRACKING/FAILURE OF THE E46 BODY YEARS 1999-2000. THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF THESE HAVE SUBFRAME DAMAGE AT THE SAME REAR DRIVERS SIDE DIFF MOUNT, IN OTHER WORDS, OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE FAILURE POINTS, THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE IS NEARLY ALWAYS THE FAILURE POINT !! I URGE THE NHTSA TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY SOMEBODY GETS HURT OR DIES! *JB

IN LATE MARCH,2007, MY BMW 323I BLEW A HEAD GASKET AFTER ONLY 82,000 MILES.THIS WAS AFTER THE CAR BEING BABIED WITH SERVICE ETC.THE DEALER I TOOK THE CAR TO, PRESSTIGE IMPORTS IN SANTA ROSA,CA. FOUND THAT THE COOLING SYSTEM WAS RUNNING AT OVER 300 DEGREES AND WARPED THE BLOCK, RUINING THE ENGINE. THEY WERE AS CONFUSED ABOUT THIS AS I WAS BECAUSE THEY HAD PERFORMED ALL OF THE SERVICE AND HAD JUST SERVICED THE CAR 2 MONTHS BEFORE, WITH NO INDICATION OF ANY PROBLEM. BMW CAME BACK AND ANNOUNCED THAT THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND WON'T INTERVENE AT ALL,CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO PAY ABOUT $6000 FOR A " USED" ENGINE TO BE PUT IN. AFTER HAVING THE CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS REPLACED AND A 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT COMPLETED AT A BMW SERVICE DEALERSHIP IN TYLER, TX, APPARENTLY THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR (LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STEERING COLUMN) FAILED WHICH CAUSED THE DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL (DSC), BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS TO ILLUMINATE. WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, I WAS DRIVING 70 MPH ON A DRY HIGHWAY USING THE CRUISE CONTROL. WHEN THIS SENSOR FAILED, ALL THREE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AND THE CRUISE CONTROL CEASED TO WORK. ACCORDING TO THE BMW SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT TO RE-CALIBRATE THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR AFTER AN ALIGNMENT IS COMPLETED. ADDITIONALLY, PER THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE BMW SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEY ARE REPLACING STEERING ANGLE SENSORS IN A VARIETY OF BMW AUTOMOBILES AT "3 TO 4 PER WEEK". A YEAR AGO, MY GAS GAUGE SENSOR WENT OUT. THE CAR HAD LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON IT. TODAY, MY 2000 BMW 323I HAS 111,000 MILES ON IT AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT DRIVE IN ANY GEAR WITHOUT A GRINDING SOUND. I ALMOST GOT KILLED BY A CAR BEHIND ME BECAUSE I COULD SUDDENLY NOT ACCELERATE AT A STOP LIGHT AND I HAD TO GET OUT TO PUSH THE VEHICLE TO SAFETY. WITHIN THE PAST FEW MONTHS THE CAR WOULD DRIVE, BUT ONLY WHEN IT WAS WARM. NOW IT IS COMPLETELY INOP. THIS CAR HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED! IT WOULD COST ME OVER $4000 TO GET A NEW TRANSMISSION AND I STILL OVER $6000 ON THE CAR. DESPITE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE 2000 BMW 323I TRANSMISSION FAILURE, BMW REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING. I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE IN TO HAVE A PROBLEM FIXED WITH THE SUN ROOF AND MENTIONED THAT I HAD A PROBLEM WITH STEERING THE VEHICLE DURING BRAKING AT SLOW SPEEDS. WHEN I GOT THE REPAIR LIST BACK FROM THE DEALER I NOTICED THAT THEY HAD REPLACED A MAJOR PORTION OF THE BRAKING AND STEERING SYSTEM. THE SERVICE SEEMED RATHER FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM AND DIDN'T HESITATE TO REPLACE ALL OF THE COMPONETS WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF A SIGNIFIGANT PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES AND HAVE NOT REPORTED IT. I HAVE BEEN CHECKING THE BMW WEBSITES ON THE 3 SERIES AND HAVE FOUND THAT A LARGE NUMBER OF THESE CARS HAVE THE SAME DEFECT IN THEIR VEHICLES. THE MANUFACTURER IS PAYING FOR THE FULL REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE SYSTEMS, BUT, ONLY IF YOU ASK ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY ARE NOT CURRENTLY NOTIFYING INDIVIDUAL OWNERS OF THIS PROBLEM TO HAVE THIS CONDITION CORRECTED PRIOR TO THE COMPLAINT.
