While traveling at night on the toll road between Washington, DC and Pittsburgh, PA, the vehicle suddenly shut off without warning. Power was lost completely, including power steering, while in motion on a major freeway, creating an immediate and severe risk of collision for us and surrounding motorists. Although the vehicle did restart, it stalled again shortly afterward while still on the toll road. The failure repeated when decelerating on the highway or coming to a stop after exiting. At no point were there warning lamps, check-engine lights, messages, or reduced-power mode indicators prior to the stalls; the shutdowns occurred without any advance notice. The vehicle was towed to an independent BMW-only repair shop in Pittsburgh. Their initial assessment indicated a high likelihood that the failure involved the VANOS assembly bolts, though the engine was not disassembled at that time, so the diagnosis could not be confirmed with certainty. Because the shop did not have immediate availability, we were asked to transport the car home until they could perform a full repair. After sitting for several weeks, the car was towed back for further inspection, at which point the shop discovered that a VANOS bolt had likely sheared off and caused irreparable damage to the engine. Our only options now are to replace the engine or scrap the vehicle. The vehicle remains in Pittsburgh, PA in our possession and is available for inspection upon request. At this time, the failure has not been reproduced or confirmed by a BMW dealer, nor has it been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Importantly, there is an existing recall on VANOS bolts for the 328xi station wagon, but our vehicle’s production date ([XXX]) falls just outside the recall window of October 1, 2009–August 4, 2011. The contact owns a 2012 BMW 328I. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while the accelerator pedal was depressed. In addition, the contact stated that there was white smoke coming from under the hood and from the exhaust tips. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the coolant pump connector had failed and needed to be replaced. An appointment with the dealer was scheduled to inspect the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. I had just came off the interstate off ramp I-44 and Chestnut Expressway when out of nowhere my Drivetrain Malfunction warning came on then the car started shaking horribly and sounded awful. Pulled over immediately and it wouldnt restart and if it did it would shut itself off almost immediately. It is currently at BMW of Springfield, they said all my sensors are correct but believe that the timing chain guide teeth busted somehow in the engine?!? Thought it could be due to the VANOS recall but my VIN isn’t included and clearly should be.

I purchased this vehicle [XXX]. Within 2 days a rattle could be heard coming from bmw vanos area, VANOS is a variable valve timing system used by BMW on various automotive petrol engines since 1992. I ceased all use of this vehicle on [XXX], only 3 days. Through my own research i found recall 23v-707 which lists my vehicle and this problem. I had the car towed to a bmw repair shop Harrison Motorsport. The owner said the engine needs to be replaced. Next I tried in Vane to get bmwna or bmwag to warrant this repair. I have numerous emails from bmwag of munich germany saying they are aware and their north america partners will be in touch. The recall states you may drive this vehicle even though it may produce a crash,,,,huh? I have another bmw specialist 4 miles from my home. I drove the car this time to Brian Motor Works. The owner here stated that without a doubt these bolts had come loose. We planned to have him fix it the next week. Still at this time there were no dashboard warnings or internal codes to be found. I tried to drive as slow as possible back home. I went 2 miles and the 1st lights appeared on the dashboard. The engine shut down and I narrowly avoided a crash. The engine will no longer turn over and I believe it has seized. Through research this issue was 1st admitted in 2014. bmw stated it illegal to sell this vehicle as a certified pre owned bmw until these bolts are checked and or replaced. Mine have never been checked or replaced. I am thankful each day that my family was not with me when this happened, My attention was totally on this vehicle when it lost all power to steer or brake. I was very lucky this day, but I fear others will not be so fortunate. thank you. I WAS CRUISING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN MY IDRIVE DISPLAYED 'LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING' AND 'DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION,' THE ENGINE WEIRD NOISES BEFORE IT SHUTDOWN AND WENT INTO NEUTRAL WHILE I WAS STILL AROUND TRAFFIC. I BARELY MADE IT A SAFE PLACE TO STOP AS I HAD TO COAST UP A HILL AND THEN TURN WITH WHATEVER MOMENTUM I HAD. THE STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKES WERE EXTREMELY HARD TO MOVE. I GOT MY CAR TOWED AND HAD A DIAGNOSTIC TEST FOR CODES SHOWN IN THE ATTACHED SCREENSHOT. HAD A CERTIFIED MECHANIC TAKE A LOOK AND WAS TOLD BY SEVERAL OTHER MECHANICS AS WELL THAT OIL STARVATION DESTROYED THE ENGINE AS A RESULT OF OIL PUMP FAILURE. WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE COMPUTER ADVISED TO PULL OVER IN A SAFE PLACE. I DID AND ENDED TOWING THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC. WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE HOUSING AROUND THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE FREE OBSTRUCTING THE OIL FLOW. THE COMPRESSION WAS GOOD BUT THEY RECOMMENDED THAT I REPLACED THE ENGINE AT A 23344.20 PLUS TAXES. NEEDLESS TO SAY I TOWED THE CAR HOME WITHOUT REPAIR. THIS IS A MANUFACTURED DEFECT BECAUSE REGULAR MAINTENANCE COULD NOT PREVENT THIS ENGINE DEFECT.

DRIVING AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEEDS APPROX. 55 MPH, WHEN LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING CAME ON AND DRIVE-TRAIN MALFUNCTION LIGHTS FLASHED ON SCREEN. CAR STALLED OUT AND WAS ALMOST UNABLE TO GET TO SIDE OF ROAD. CAR WAS TOWED TO BMW DEALER, CAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE TIMING CHAIN AND GUIDE. WILL REQUIRE NEW ENGINE (OUT OF WARRANTY - BMW WILL NOT PROVIDE ASSISTANCE). AFTER ADDITIONAL RESEARCH IT HAS LED TO MY CONCLUSION THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND A CLASS ACTION LAW SUITE HAS BEEN SUBMITTED IN REGARDS TO EARLY MODEL N20 MOTORS. PREMATURE ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO TIMING CHAIN DEFECT. CAR WAS WELL MAINTAINED WITH REGULARLY SERVICED OIL CHANGES, ETC. I HAVE ALL PARTS RECEIPTS FOR ALL SERVICE DONE.

FUEL TANK LEAK. CAR STARTED SMELLING LIKE GAS. NOTICED AFTER PUMPING GAS - GAS STARTING POURING / LEAKING OUT OF FUEL TANK IN DAUGHTERS CAR ON LEFT SIDE. TOOK TO SHOP, SAID ENTIRE FUEL TANK AND WAS TOLD ENTIRE TANK WITH FUEL HOSE PIPE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO CRACK IN TANK / FUEL PIPE. SHOP SAID SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AND IS PROBABLY FAULTY. EXPENSIVE REPAIR, BMW SHOULD RECALL THE 3 SERIES ALONG WITH THE OTHER FUEL TANK / FUEL SYSTEMS THAT THEY RECALLED FOR THE 5 AND 7 SERIES. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND HAZARDOUS FOR THESE TO BE ON THE ROAD.

THE 3 SERIES BMW'S WERE NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL 16V-746 FOR FUEL LEAK EVEN THOUGH THE 5 AND 7 SERIES HAVE THE SAME FUEL PUMP. MY CAR IS LEAKING GAS WHICH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO MY FAMILY AND OTHERS. I HAVE READ COUNTLESS ACCOUNTS ONLINE OF THE SAME ISSUE WITH OTHER OWNERS OF THE 3 SERIES. A PROBLEM OF THIS MAGNITUDE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL.

"TAKAYA RECALL" I WAS DRIVING MY CAR (IN MOTION) ON THE HIGHWAY (BMW 328I 2012) WHEN SUDDENLY A MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DISPLAY SCREEN STATING "FUEL SUPPLY MALFUNCTION" AFTER READING THE MESSAGE THE CAR SUDDENLY STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I TURNED MY HAZARDS ON AND ATTEMPTED TO START THE CAR, BUT IT WOULD TURN OVER. AFTER WAITING 10 MINUTES WITH MY CAR COMPLETELY TURN OFF, IT FINALLY STARTED. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME SEVERAL TIMES AND MOST RECENTLY TODAY 08/31/2017 ON THE STREETS. IT WAS REALLY SCARY ORDEAL BECAUSE THE OTHER DRIVERS HAD TO SUDDENLY BRAKE! MY CAR IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD AND WELL MAINTAINED, SO THIS PROBLEM SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING.

The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, there was smoke coming out from the exhaust pipe, and there was a burning smell coming from the engine compartment. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the oil pan was leaking near the water pump. The dealer replaced the thermostat gasket, the valve cover gasket, the cylinder head cover, the ISA screws and washer, the high-pressure pipe, and the gasket flange. Additionally, the dealer performed an oil change and added coolant to the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. Dealer refused to cover DME that failed immediately after recall 24V-608 work. In early June 2025, I contacted my local BMW dealership about an overheat notification I received while driving. They confirmed there was an open recall on the vehicle for a water pump connector (Recall 24V-608). I had the vehicle towed to their location. They sent me a video walkaround that characterized everything looked good, except the water pump connector which had failed. Several days later, I was informed the recall repair had been completed but when they plugged in the new water pump connector, the DME shorted and they had to unhook the battery. Despite my best attempts to get this consequential damage covered as part of the recall work, BMW refused. I was told I had to come pick up the car as-is or pay for repairs. When I looked into the issue further online, I learned that if I had chosen to pick up the car, hook up the battery and attempt to start and drive it, I could have found myself stuck inside the car (electronic locks) with a DME that literally caused the whole car to start on fire. Thank goodness I didn't go that route. After further investigation into the recall issue (24v-608), I have learned the entire basis of the recall was risk of a "thermal event" caused as a result the faulty water pump connector shorting out. BMW never denied this when I brought it up. It is infuriating that BMW is suggesting the DME shorting out is not related to or covered by the water pump recall issue. A risk of thermal event is stated in the recall notice, and the DME literally shorted out DURING the recall repair work. They quoted me something like $5,000-7,000 to have the car drivable again. I'm at a complete loss.

The contact stated that the temperature sensor on the instrument panel had initially failed to operate as needed; over time, the entire instrument panel had gone blank while the vehicle was being driven. In addition, the battery would continue to run while the vehicle was turned off; as a result, the vehicle would shut off while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to various independent mechanics and each stated that the instrument cluster was defective. Despite multiple battery and temperature gauge replacements, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed him that there were no recalls on the vehicle and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.

DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION. On June 25th 2025, for the second time I got this Drive Train Malfunction Issue on my 328i 2012 Model. The car just stopped in middle of road ( thank GOD not on a freeway ; otherwise, this would have resulted in multi car accidents and could have costed people's life including mine ). The car just died and STOPPED all of a sudden in middle of road and when I tried to start it, it only crank's . After waiting for about 10 minutes, it started . I had exactly same issue earlier in July 2024 and that time BMW service found high pressure fuel pump to be defective and they changed that. I was told by my BMW dealer that certain model and year BMW has this issue and it is well know. But I do see BMW issuing to its customers or doing anything. If the car just stops without any warning to pull over etc. while you are driving is very serious is VERY SERIOUS and LIFE- THREATENING ISSUE . Imagine one is driving at 70 miles an hour on a busy freeway and car abruptly stops ( like my car did , twice in last 11 months, thank god not on freeway though) and there are several cars behind you driving at more or less at same speed; this will result in multi cars collision and multiple accidents and deaths. I request NHTSA to take this serious issue on priority basis and do something ASAP.

THE BMW 2012 328 XIT (XI WAGON) HAD HAD STUMBLING ISSUES FOR MONTHS AND THE DEALER WASN'T ABLE TO DIAGNOSE. WHILE DRIVING, THE OEM BOSCH #5 CYLINDER COIL PACK FINALLY WENT CAUSING THE CAR TO HAVE TO LIMP HOME. THE CAR WAS "REPAIRED" NO QUESTIONS ASKED BY THE DEALER AND THE BOSCH COILS WERE REPLACED WITH DELPHI COILS AS AN UPGRADE. OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT COILS GOING BAD ON A NEWER CAR.

Without warning and no OBD2 codes thrown, my car and many others in the E90 (2007-2012) 3-series (N52 engine) will stall, lose power, and/or burn excessive oil when the integral PCV - valve cover starts to clog. Many owners on the BMW boards online have reported similar problems. The E90 3-series BMWs have an integral, internal positive crankcase ventilation system as part of the engine's plastic valvetrain (engine cover or valve cover) cover. While driving car at speeds <30 mph, on hitting a minor bump on the road, car engine suddenly stopped with a "Drivetrain malfunction" error. The car lost all power within a few seconds, including power steering. The instrument cluster was off except for error message. Transmission shifted to Neutral automatically which I believe is by design. On somehow maneuvering in traffic and coasting to a stop, and waiting a minute and pressing the ignition start button, car powered on immediately and was driveable. The same incident repeated within 30 miles of driving. A local authorized service center found no existing problems although there are several error messages logged by the on board computer. The safety is severely compromised and the car can be easily rear-ended since hazard light signals also failed. The vehicle has otherwise been regularly maintained at authorized service centers.

Passenger restraint system malfunction. My vehicle as well as thousands of others have the chronic and unsafe issue of the passenger occupancy sensor malfunctioning. In order to remove warning on dash it’s either a $2,000 repair, or a $40 bypass which basically places the seat as constantly occupied, sticking the passenger airbag in the ‘on’ position. Vehicle is available for inspection. With this malfunction, any person that sits in the passenger front seat is at risk of injury or death in the event of a collision. Malfunction has been confirmed by both a dealer and an independent service center. Vehicle was inspected by the dealer, but no police or insurance company. Vehicle was purchased with the malfunction and the warning lights have been on for several years. With the massive number of vehicles of this make with a range of different mileage, with this issue, a recall is not only needed but warranted and should be mandated with this being a major safety issue.

I LEFT MY CAR IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR NEARLY 2 MONTHS WITHOUT DRIVING IT OVER THE WINTER MONTHS IN NEW ENGLAND. UPON STARTING THE CAR ON NICER WEATHER, MY STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT MOVE. I CAN DRIVE THE CAR IN A STRAIGHT DIRECTION BUT THE STEERING WHEEL JUST WOULDN'T BUDGE. HAD A BMW DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE AND FINGERS WERE POINTED AT HITTING A POTHOLE THAT CAUSED IMPACT AND THEREFORE DAMAGED 4 BOLTS HOLDING THE STEERING RACK TO THE MOTOR. HOWEVER, THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT HOW I WAS DRIVING IT PERFECTLY FINE BEFORE STORING IT FOR WINTER, AND HOW 3 BOLTS WAS ALREADY MISSING AND THE LAST BOLT WAS CORRODING AND EVENTUALLY FELL OFF. NICE, NOT A MECHANICAL ISSUE SO NOT BMW'S RESPONSIBILITY. THIS MEANS I WAS DRIVING THE CAR WITH 1 BOLT HOLDING THE STEERING RACK TO THE MOTOR FOR AN UNKNOWN PERIOD OF TIME. IF THE LAST BOLT GAVE UP WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING, THEN I MAY NOT HAVE BEEN SO LUCKY. WHY WOULD AN IMPACT THAT STRONG, AS DESCRIBED BY THE BMW TECHNICIAN, NOT FULLY RIP APART THE BOLTS? WHY WAS I ABLE TO DRIVE NORMALLY FOR WEEKS WITHOUT ISSUES? HOW DID IT NOT CAUSE ANY OTHER ISSUES AROUND THE WHEEL OR SUSPENSION AND ONLY 4 SECLUDED BOLTS WERE AFFECTED? WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF ALL THE BOLTS GAVE UP WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN? HOW DOES A BMW CANNOT WITHSTAND NORMAL IMPACT WITH ITS FINE GERMAN ENGINEERING? FORD HAD RECENTLY RECALLED ALMOST 1 MILLION VEHICLES BECAUSE THEIR BOLTS WERE FAULTY AND WOULD CORRODE UNDER WATER/SNOW WITH SALT. TESLA DID THE SAME RECALL EARLIER THIS YEAR. PLEASE NOTE TESLA USES THE SAME MANUFACTURER FOR THESE ALUMINUM BOLTS WHICH ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO CORROSION AS BMW.

WHILE PULLING OUT OF THE GARAGE, A WARNING MESSAGE "CHASIS STABILIZATION: DRIVE MODERATELY" APPEARED ON THE DASH AND HAD NO POWER STEERING AND WAS MAKING WHIRRING NOISE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED. STOPPED THE CAR AND WALKED BACK INTO THE GARAGE AND FOUND A SHEARED OFF BOLT ON THE FLOOR. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, FOUND ALL THE THREE BOLTS ON THE ELECTRIC STEERING MOTOR SHEARED OFF & MISSING AND THE STEERING MOTOR WAS ABOUT TO FALL OFF FROM ITS PLACE AND EXCESSIVE CORROSION WAS ALSO NOTICED. THE ONE BOLT FOUND ON THE GARAGE FLOOR MUST HAVE BEEN THE LAST ONE HOLDING THE MOTOR IN PLACE. GLAD THIS HAPPENED ON THE DRIVEWAY AND NOT AT FREEWAY SPEEDS OR WHEN MAKING A TURN.

My BMW 2012 E92 model vehicle currently has a malfunctioning Front Seat Occupancy AirBag sensor mat is very similar to the recall for E60 to E91 models. BMW refuses to fix it under the other recall and I'm wondering what can be done to add it to the recall? I also read of an extended warranty for this part but I do not qualify since my model is e92.( SI B01 01 18) . Please advise.

The contact owns a 2012 BMW 328I.The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle independently accelerated at high speed before the vehicle shut off with the message “Transmission Not in Park” displayed. The contact was able to pull over on the side of the road, and after the vehicle cooled down the contact was able to restart the vehicle and the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the fuel pump was replaced but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and no failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the VIN was not under recall for the failure. The failure mileage was 117,000.

The contact stated while driving approximately 15 MPH and making a right turn into a parking lot, the turn signals, interior lights, and instrument panel lights became inoperable. Additionally, the side-view mirrors no longer operated as needed. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to the dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed and found that the footwell module needed to be replaced. DRIPS APPEARED TO BE COMING OUT OF PASSENGER VISOR MIRROR. IMMEDIATELY DRIED IT UP WITH TOWELS. NO ACCESS TO NEIGHBORS DRY VAC TODAY (THEY ARE OUT OF TOWN). I HAVE ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE SEAL AROUND THE WINDSHIELD ONCE AND I BELIEVE IT IS POSSIBLY THE SEAL AGAIN. HAVE NOT GONE TO DEALERSHIP YET, I AM BUSY WITH A FUNERAL IN THE FAMILY. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED OF AN OIL LEAK AT THE OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKET. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS THEN INFORMED THAT THE VACUUM PUMP ALSO SHOWED EVIDENCE OF A LEAK. I WAS DRIVING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY AND THE VEHICLE RANDOMLY STALLED AND LOST POWER. DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION TROUBLE LIGHTS LIT UP THE DASH. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO GET OUT OF TRAFFIC BEFORE COASTING TO A STOP. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO BMW SOUTH AUSTIN AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A FAULTY FUEL TRANSFER PUMP, AND A FAULTY FUEL TANK. ESSENTIALLY I HAD RUN OUT OF FUEL WITH 1/4 TANK SHOWING ON THE GAUGES. BMW DENIED MY REQUEST TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE UNDER WARRANTY, EVEN THOUGH THERE IS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE "IN TANK FUEL PUMP". RECENTLY MY GIRLFRIEND AND I HAD PURCHASED AND FINANCED A 2012 BMW 328I. THE MILEAGE WHEN WE BOUGHT THE CAR WAS AT 48,000. WITHEN THE FIRST 2 WEEKS OF HAVING THE CAR I HAD TO BRING IT BACK DUE TO THE PARKING LAMP BEING OUT. I DIDN'T GET NO WARNING FROM THE CAR THAT THE LIGHT WAS OUT EITHER. I BROUGHT IT IN THEY CORRECTED THE PROBLEM FOR THE TIME BEING AND I WENT ON MY WAY. THE SAME EXACT PARKING LAMP WENT OUT ANOTHER FEW WEEKS LATER. WE HAVE ONLY HAD THE CAR 3 MONTHS AND IT IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE AND SAYING THAT I HAVE DRIVEN A LOT MORE MILES THAN I ACTUALLY HAVE. THE ODOMETER IS NOW READING 60,000 MILES. ON 4/19/13, I CALLED WEBER BMW MYSELF TO CHECK THE STATUS, LOUIE INFORMED ME THERE WERE 3 RECALL NOTICES ON MY CAR THAT WERE APPARENT AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED, AND THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO HOLD MY CAR UNTIL MONDAY 4/22/13.I PICKED UP MY CAR ON 4/23/13 AND LOUIE INFORMED ME ALL THE RECALLS WERE FIXED AND MY CAR WAS GOOD TO TAKE HOME. ON 4/24/13, THE COOLANT WARNING SIGNALED AGAIN. THAT EVENING, MY CAR BEGAN TO EXERT EVEN MORE ISSUES THAN BEFORE! FIRST THE COOLANT WARNING, THEN WARNING TELLING ME TO DRIVE MODERATELY, THEN PULL OVER IMMEDIATELY ENGINE OVERHEATING. I FOUND THIS RESOLUTION SKEPTICAL, LAZY, AND KNEW IT WOULD NOT BE ADEQUATE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUES WITH MY CAR. I STOPPED BY WEBER ON 4/29/13 AND THE SERVICE ADVISER ATTEMPTED TO 'TOP OFF MY COOLANT, WHEN WE BOTH NOTICED THE COOLANT SPILLING OUT OF THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ENGINE (I EMPHASIZE SPILLING AND NOT LEAKING). THIS CAR HAS NO "SAFETY CATCH" ON THE HOOD LATCH THAT THE OWNER OPENS AFTER FIRST RELEASING THE HOOD FROM INSIDE THE CAR. INSTEAD, THE OWNER OPENS THE HOOD BY PULLING TWICE ON THE HOOD RELEASE LEVEL INSIDE THE CAR IN THE DRIVER'S FOOTWELL. THE HOOD THEN OPENS FREELY WITHOUT FURTHER UNLATCHING OUTSIDE THE CAR. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THIS LATCH SYSTEM FAILS TO CLOSE THE HOOD PROPERLY. OFTEN ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER WILL NOT LATCH FIRMLY INTO PLACE. SO, INSTEAD OF TWO LATCHES HOLDING THE HOOD DOWN, ONLY ONE DOES. I TOOK MY CAR TO A DEALER FOR THIS PROBLEM, WHO DIAGNOSED IT HAS BEING CAUSED BY "LEAVES" IN THE MECHANISM.
