VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

CAR ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL WITH SPEED AT 100+ MILES PER HOUR. THE BRAKES FAILED/ WOULD NOT MOVE. THE ACCELERATOR MOVED AWAY FROM MY FOOT. THIS HAPPEN A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES WITH MY CAR. EACH TIME THE DEALER SAID IT WAS A DIFFERENT PROBLEM. MY CAR WAS A 1990 CADILLAC SEDAN DEVILLE, 4 DOOR. THE TOYOTA RECALL DESCRIBED EXACTLY WHAT HAPPEN TO MY CAR. THE 911 CALL TELEVISED ON THE NEWS WITH THE FAMILY THAT WAS KILLED IN THE TOYOTA CAR, THE CALLER SAID "THE CAR WAS ACCELERATING OUT OF CONTROL AND THE BRAKES HAD FAILED". THIS IS WHAT I REMEMBER WITH MY INCIDENTS AND THIS BROUGHT BACK THOSE MEMORIES. I HOPE THIS CAN HELP. I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS THE FLOOR MATS, THAT IS WHAT I THOUGHT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1990 CADILLAC DEVILLE. WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 65 MPH. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE FOR ABOUT 30-45 SECONDS AND THEN THE ACCELERATION STOPPED ON ITS OWN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP, AND THEY ADVISED HIM TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A CADILLAC DEALER. THE LOCAL MECHANIC ATTEMPTED TO DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE ON 3 OCCASIONS AND WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. REPAIR INVOICES WERE AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WERE 44,356. *AK

THE CONSUMER SET THE CRUISE CONTROL AT 48 MPH. THE CONSUMER CAME UPON A VEHICLE THAT WAS MAKING A TURN THEREFORE SHE HAD TO SLOW DOWN. SHE STATED SHE PUT HER FOOT ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. SHE THEN PLACED BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE STILL DIDN'T SLOW DOWN. THE CONSUMER ENDED UP REAR ENDING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HER. THE VEHICLE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND THE DRIVER BLACKED OUT FOR A MINUTE. THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN SHE CAME TO SHE WAS HANGING OFF AN EMBANKMENT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD. SHE STATES THAT HER CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT DISENGAGE. THE CONSUMER WAS TRANSPORTED TO A HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO HER RESIDENCE. THE CONSUMER HAS RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT A LOT OF CADILLAC'S ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL MODULE. *NM

HOBBIE DIAGNOSED AND REPLACED ENGINE MOTOR MOUNT IN MARCH 1999. WE HAD THE CAR CHECKED AT AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP IN JUNE 2000 (5676 MILES ON NEW PART) AND THEY FOUND THAT THE NEW MOUNT WAS BROKEN. WE FEEL THAT THE PART MAY HAVE BEEN BROKEN AT THE TIME OF INSTALLATION. CALLED BOTH HOBBIE AND GENERAL MOTORS. NEITHER WILL ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE MOTOR MOUNT IS DEFECTIVE NOR WILL THEY ADMIT TO A PROBLEM.

MY CAR WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY-SEVERAL SECONDS AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE I SMELLED A STRONG BURNING ODER AND THEN SEEN WHISPS OF SMOKE COMING FROM THE BACK SIDE OF THE AIR BAG IN THE STEERING WHEEL-I SHUT OFF THE IGNITION AND THE SMOKE QUIT SHORTLY AFTER - I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE AIR BAG STARTED TO SMOKE IN A FEW SECONDS AGAIN--I DISCONNECTED THE S.I.R. CONNECTOR ON THE STEERING COLUMN AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE-NO SMOKE OR SMELL WITH S.I.R. DISCONNECTED-I REMOVED THE AIR BAG FROM THE STEERING WHEEL-ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE AIR BAG MODULE THERE IS A ROUND STEEL CAP ABOUT 4 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND 1/2 HIGH FASTENED TO THE BACK OF THE AIR BAG MODULE--THIS WAS VERY HOT AND HAD BLACK SOOT COMING OUT ALL AROUND THE EDGES WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE AIR BAG MODULE-----I TOOK THE AIR BAG MODULE TOO MY LOCAL CADILLAC DEALER-THEY CHECKED FOR ANY RECALLS OR TECH BULLETINS AND SAID I SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC DIV. CONCERNING THIS AS IT WAS PAST WARRANTY--I CALLED CADILLAC CONSUMER RELATIONS CENTER ON 4/12/90 THEY SEEMED CONCERNED ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND TOOK A VERY DETAILED REPORT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED -EVEN THE TIME OF DAY AND TEMP.--THEY SAID THEY WOULD GET BACK TO ME IN3-5 DAYS--ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF LATER THEY GOT CALLED ME BACK AND SAID VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND I SHOULD BRING IT TO MY LOCAL DEALER AND GET IT FIXED AT MY EXPENSE-.-I TOLD THEM I WOULD CONTACT THE NHTSA AS I FELT THIS WAS A DEFINITE SAFETY CONCERN-THEY JUST SAID THEY WOULD NOTATE IT IN THE FILE. *AK

NOTE OTHER OWNERS OF THIS CAR HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS EVEN AFTER DEALER CHECK.........ONE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT IT IS THE BAFFLE AROUND THE FUEL TAKE THAT CUTS THE IGNITION OUT AND I SHOULD KEEP FUEL COMPLETELY FILLED TO TOP OR AT LEAST HALF FULL. FOR A SOME TIME I NOTICED THE AUTO WAS NOT STARTING AS QUICK AS USUAL AND I SMELLED GAS A COUPLE OF DAYS THING THE GAS STATION ATTENDANT HAD OVER FILLED MY TANK. I KEPT SMELLING GAS SO TOOK IT TO GET CHECKED. THE GAS SENDER LINES WERE ALL PITTED AND RUSTY. THE GAS TANK WAS ALSO PITTED AND RUSTY AT THE SEAMS AND OTHER AREAS OF THE TANK. I WAS WONDERING WHY IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS MY GAS MILEAGE WAS SO POOR ALL OF A SUDDEN. BESIDES, I WOULD THINK IT TO BE A VERY DANGEROUS THING. THE AUTO HAS BEEN KEPT UNDER COVER SINCE I BOUGT IT , I DON'T BELIEVE SUCH IMPORTANT COMPONENTS SHOULD HAVE RUSTED AND PITTED SO BADLY UNLESS IT WAS POOR QUALITY MATERIAL. IF I WAS IN AN ACCIDENT IT COULD HAVE EASILY CAUSED A FIRE. IT CAUSED ME $ 710.00 TO REPLACE TANK AND SENDER. I NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER OF THE PROBLEM, BUT RECEIVED NO ACKNOWLEGEMENT.

THE TRUNK LID SHUT AND LOCKED WITH CONSUMER'S HAND STUCK IN IT. A NEIGHBOR HAD TO PRY OPEN THE TRUNK WITH A TIRE IRON. THE CAR WHILE TURNING INTERMITTENTLY DIES AND LOOSES ANY ACCELERATION STALLS AND MOST OF THE TIME STARTS BACK UP WHEN LIFTING FOOT OF THE GAS AND SOMETIMES DIES. ALSO THE CAR ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN SOMETIMES VERY QUICKLY. THE CAR STALLING WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN GOT ME T-BONED BY SOMEONE WHILE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. BARRINGTON MOTOR WORKS HAD MADE MORE EXCUSES THAN FIX PROBLEMS, OTHER PROBLEMS EXIST, BUT TOO MANY TO LIST. THE BARRINGTON MW HAS NEVER ONCE FOUND A PROBLEM TILL THE CAR LEAVES US STRANDED, EVEN AFTER WE COMPLAINED ABOUT THAT PROBLEM. WHEN DRIVING CAR SOMETIMES ACCELERATES OUT OF CONTROL. *AK WHEN CONSUMER WENT TO APPLY THE BRAKES THEY WERE VERY HARD, CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO STOP VEHICLE, CONSUMER THEN FORCED THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARKED THE STOP WAS SEVERE, THE SECOND OCCASION THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AGAIN AND CONSUMER HAD TO PUT GEAR IN NEURAL AND BEGAN RAPIDLY HITTING THE ACCELERATOR AFTER 3 TIMES THE ENGINE SLOWED DOWN AND THE BRAKE WORKED, HAS NOT HAPPENED SINCE.*JB
