1998 Catera

Numerous issues with 1998 catera. Had timing belt tensioner-pulleys/cam drive replaced last year(3-2002) while under warranty. "service campaign" was issued by cadillac in sept 2002 for catera's to have came drive idler/tensioner pulley/water pump replaced with new version. Got vehicle serviced today and was informed that car had another serious problem that needed to be corrected-out of pocket-coolant crossover leaking into oil cooler, and valve cover was leaking oil.....the car runs extremely hot, has poor performance, gets terrible gas millage, battery has low voltage when nothing is left on by mistake, replaced the battery 4 time in two years, a/c had new compressor replaced past summer 2002 still not able to cool car and while in use the car sounds like a tractor, boggs down the perfromance. Had to have entire brake system replaced (cost over 800.00) at 34,000, purchased 4 sets of michellan mxv4 tires in last 2 years-inside tread seperation on front tires caused blow out twice.

2000 Catera

While driving the vehicle, the car stalled without cause. When we attempted to stop the car due to the car stall the car spun out and was hit by an oncoming vehicle. This car has been subject to several stallouts while driving at various speeds since purchased in 2002. This vehicle also has problems with not starting when the car is completely filled with fuel. After being filled completely, the car will not start for several days.*ak the vehicle also leaks antifreeze from the oil cooler at a rate of about 1 gallon per week. Cadillac acknowledges the problem but will not fix it.

1999 Catera

Car's "check engine" and transmission dash lights intermittently stay on and the car won't start. Sometimes the car will start and move with the transmission light on but the car is sluggish. Two or three hours later the car will start and run fine. This problem was identified a week after purchase (sep 2004) but the dealer couldn't identify a problem. It has gradually worsened, but none more than this evening when my family and i were almost killed! We were driving on an interstate at 70 mph. No engine lights were on. The speedometer all of a sudden went to zero and i lost all power. An eighteen wheeler missed us by inches as i tried to get the car off to the side of the road. My daughter slammed her head against the side window. Gm and cadillac should be ashamed of putting this product out. They have all but washed and turned their back on catera owners. I am retiring from the u.s. Air force in two weeks after 25 years of service. I get chills when i think of americans who died in wars and contingencies to protect people and businesses like this. I can't believe there isn't one official recall on this vehicle. I've had nothing but trouble with this car from the beginning but none as dangerous as the current problem. I have read story after story on yours and other internet sites about this lemon of a car (1997 to 2001). Tomorrow i will take time off from work to bring this car to the dealer. Everything will be based on their schedule and i will have to find rides back and forth (30 minutes from my work and 45 minutes from my home). They will not be able to identify any dtc codes and i will pay for things that they think is wrong with it. Ironically, my research indicates that the problem may be a crankshaft sensor. They disagreed during the warranty period and did not replace it. It may or may not be the sensor, but someone must be responsible and accountable for identifying and fixing this common catera problem before someone gets killed!*jb

After the recall was performed, 30 days later the vehicle caught fire in the engine. Consumer put the fire out and took the vehicle back to the dealership. After the mechanic repaired the vehicle, it caught fire again a half mile from the dealership. *jb

Chronic failure of gm pn# 90566947 causing loss of coolant and possible fire damage due to proximity of exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. There have been 3 replacements in 62,580 miles. The first @ 16,586 miles, second @ 34,503 miles, and the latest at 62,580 miles. The leaks begin as an odor of coolant, then spots begin on the pavement, then finally the coolant reservoir empties itself. The valve is located at the rear of the engine block up against the firewall, and adjacent to the exhaust pipe on the passenger side. The part has been replaced all 3 times, once under warranty and twice at my expense. Gm refuses to acknowledge a design problem, even though this is not a maintenance part. It is constructed from plastic and does not withstand the hot environment of the application. It is used on the 3 litre 6 cylinder engine of the cadillac catera and cts, and the saab 9-5. Dealer use records show a very high incidence of failure even though there are not that many vehicles using this engine. There is a possibility of fire due to the coolant spraying on the catalytic converter when moving, as well as disabling the engine due to the loss of coolant. *tr

The purpose of this memo is to request nhtsa to evaluate and take appropriate action to have the manufacturer correct design defect in the hot water valve of the 2001 cadillac catera cooling system. *ak recently the hot water valve, fp number 90566947, in the cooling system of my 2001 catera failed for the second time. The first failure occurred in 2005 with less than 50,000 miles on the car and was repaired under warranty. The second failure occurred last month with less than 75,000 miles on the car and was repaired at my expense. Both repairs were performed by val ward cadillac, fort myers, florida, where i purchased the vehicle. I have owned many cars, including four general motors (gm) cars, and this cooling system problem has never occurred on any of them. On june 5, 2007 i sent a letter to gm asking that they issue a recall of the 2001 catera to correct this design defect. I was advised, via a telephone call from ms. Jolene blazukiewicz, in their executive office, that gm does not believe this is a design defect or safety hazard and no recall has been issued. She went on to say the failed part is made of plastic, as though this was a reason for the failure. I suggested they may want to consider making the part from a stronger material, she said she would forward my letter to the design department. I live in a relatively rural part of central florida and sudden loss of cooling fluid on a road far from a town or service station, could present a very real and significant safety hazard and result in severe engine damage. The fact that this valve has now failed twice indicates it is a design defect. It would seem appropriate for general motors to issue a recall and replace the valve with a more robust part. I therefore request the nhtsa to evaluate the problem and, if appropriate, direct gm to issue a recall for the replacement of the defective part. Sincerely, torsten rothman

Electrical smoldering fire within the dash harness p/n90493373 of my 1997 cadillac catera vin #[xxx]. No actual flames were seen before the 80 amp main fuse opened. I did see the actual harness at the cadillac dealership and most if not all the wires in the harness had their shielding melted clean away about 1/2". The exposed wires shorted together to cause the fuse to open. I was told the authorized dealership was the only people able to determine if this was a manufacturing failure but that they were not able to actually able to make the determination. They pointed out, its possible that anyone could have done something to contribute to this issue. They would not say if there was any evidence of tampering though, even when asked to look for it. Cadillac factory service rep [xxx] opened file #[xxx] on 8-14-03 and offered to look into any possible assistance, but said there would be little to none. When i asked if i should report this to nhtsa they then threatened to withdraw the file and any possible assistance. I am the original owner of a 2001 cetera. My car now has 42,000 miles. At approximately 22000 miles , having rotated the tires faithfully every 3000 miles, i went to a tire dealer to have them rotated, and was told not to drive on them anymore as the edges were totally worn out, exposing the canvas. I had been told all along that they were wearing unevenly, but chalked it up to the original tires ,sometimes not being as good as they should be. Replaced with original , very expensive tires. Now at 42,000 miles, having faithfully rotated every 2 to 3000 miles , i am told that they need replacement again, having been told at every rotation that they were wearing unevenly every mile that i drive, i felt as if i was leaving money on the pavement. The dealer said that it' was the tires themselves , $160 each, and became very irritated and indignant when i told him that the tire dealer said that every one of the cateras ate tires. One of the service advisors at the dealership told me that it was a problem on cateras, but the service manager quickly jumped in and told me again that it was the tires themselves and not the car. He was very unhappy that one of his employees told me the truth. Now that i saw that others were having the same problems, just as the tire dealer had told me, i was very irritated that the car dealership has been covering it up all of this time. I spoke to gm headquarters, but they also denied knowing anything about there being a design defect. *ak

The steering system lacks equilibrium, lacks on-center feel and has a tendency to wander. The vehicle rools in a circle unless the driver steers the front wheels by applying a torque to the steering wheel. Constant problem since the purchase of vehicle. Such as steering problems, quivering on the road, burning smell, etc. As of feb. 2006, car engine shut down on highway while driving 3 times. At the time there was a burning smell and the engine/coolant light had come on. Vehicle constant in shop for repair, approximately 3 times a month; causing problems for me. Engine sensor was changed in feb. 2006; however, burning smell continued, leaks began to occur, water pump needed replacement, and the coolant light continued to be activated. A number of leaks were discovered, and they were repaired; however, problems continued to occur. Light were coming on and off, "onstar" light remained on, and cd player/stereo would stay on with engine off and no key in ignition with doors open, and the sunroof would open without touching the button. When taken to shop, result was that they did not find any problems with the car. After this event occurred, car created unusual noise when started and as engine continued to run. Now car will not start on its own, it needed a boost three times within one day. When taken to repair shop, marvin starr, reported to me tat corrosion is occurring with wires that leads to the battery. Plastic covering of wire is melting and worn away leaving the bare wire exposed. Overheating is occurring but the source is unknown. Battery, which was replaced in 2005, has now started wearing away. Company wants approximately $1000 in order for wires to be fixed; however, the problem is when they repair it the melting of the wires would still continue due to the over heating. Dangerous driving vehicle at moment; however, i need to get around and driving is a main part of my everyday activities. *nm
