How to read a Chevrolet Aveo VIN — every digit explained
Every Chevrolet Aveo carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Aveo.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Aveo VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

2010 Chevrolet Aveo recalls 1
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:fluid
What's wrong. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Chevrolet Aveo and 2009 Pontiac G3 vehicles. The vehicles may contain brake fluid which does not protect against corrosion of the valves inside the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module, affecting the closing motion of the valves.
Risk. If the ABS valve corrodes it may result in longer brake pedal travel or reduced performance, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Fix. GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS module, free of charge, in any vehicle that did not have its module replaced under a previous customer satisfaction campaign. The recall began in late September 2014. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), and 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac). GM's number for this recall is 14505.

Fuel System, Gasoline
What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles equipped with a 1.6l engine, during a ncap severe frontal crash test, the fuel line in the engine compartment developed a fracture. In addition, the crash damage caused four short circuits in the fuse block, the combination of which allowed the fuel pump to continue running and fuel leaked onto the ground.
Risk. If these conditions occurred in an actual crash, a vehicle fire could occur.
Fix. Dealers will replace the fuse block and install a new section of fuel line that has been redesigned free of charge. The recall began on november 16, 2006. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

The warning lights illuminated on and off and the engine idled as the vehicle coasted to a stop. The vehicle restarted, and then stalled after a few minutes. The vehicle was towed to the sales/service dealer, where the problem could not be recreated. The second time, the electronic ignition switch was replaced and the third time, the alternator was replaced. Also, while traveling 45 mph, the vehicle avoided the tire tread thrown off the tire of a tractor trailer, and struck a median divider. The frontal air bags failed to deploy. The 18 year old driver sustained chest bruises from the seat belts and the 42 year old female sustained bruising due to the seat belt and skinned the left shin. Neither occupant went to the hospital. There was a police report taken. The contact had received a nhtsa recall letter # 06v398000 for the fuel system: gasoline. Air Bags 284 Read
I was involved in an accident in which my airbag didn't deploy. I suffered from a concussion, a hairline nasal fracture, and i still have issues with my neck and back to this day. As i have noticed it seems to be a common problem not only with gm vehicles but aveo's as well. When is a recall going to be issued?
After buying my car brand new the air bag light went on and stayed on till this day. At the beginning i thought it was only the passenger air bag and went and asked about it at the dealership where they actually informed me that it wasn't only the passenger airbag thats not working, rather none of the airbags work. That was made clear a month later when my dad, grandmother, and brother were driving it and got t-boned by a truck and of course non of the airbags went off. I mean getting tboned by a truck is pretty serious thing where air bags should deploy! The aveo is not the safest car to start out with but to also have zero airbags thats pretty messed up, pretty much a death waiting to happen, because lets be real here, i stand no chance if i get in an accident in that car. Might as well no have seat belts on there either. When contacted the dealership more than once they have nothing to say other than pay us and well look into it then you'll pay us more. I will never buy another chevrolet car again. *tr
My 2009 chevrolet aveo was t-boned by a driver going 50-55 mph, and we were traveling 25 mph (according to police report). The aveo was hit on the front passenger side tire / front panel / passenger side of front bumper. The driver's side air bag deployed, but the passenger side air bag did not. It should have deployed. I had noticed a few months before the accident that the "passenger side air bag is off" light would go on and off while my husband was sitting in the passenger seat. The light eventually stayed on even when he was sitting in the seat. I had been meaning to take the car in to the chevy dealer to have it looked at since it was still under warranty. Also, i noticed on this website that there is only one recall on this car. I received a recall notice directly from chevy about the spark plugs not sitting correctly in the boots, or something like that, and had them replaced for free from the dealer. I was never notified by chevy of the recall notice on this website about the abs system, but my car didn't have abs. (not sure if it will post my vin, but if it does, just an fyi, this car was deemed a total loss/beyond repair). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet aveo. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, another vehicle crashed into the side of her vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained multiple bruises, cuts on an unknown arm and leg, one passenger sustained a broken nose, and the other passenger sustained a cut below the eye that all required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a impound lot. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was not available. ...updated 01/25/16 *bf
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet aveo. While driving approximately 50 mph in the rain, the contact crashed into the preceding vehicle. The front end of his vehicle was damaged and the radiator is shaped like a "v". The air bags failed to deploy and three occupants were injured. The vehicle was towed. The other driver confirmed that she stopped the vehicle without warning due to the weather and poor visibility. The contact has photos and a police report was filed. The fuel system was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 12,200.
I was in a car wreck where a woman shot across in front of me and i hit her in the passenger side of her vehicle and it was a solid impact for my vehicle at about 25-35 mph. And my airbags, both driver and passenger failed to deploy which resulted in my brother b myself and my sister. Being injured. *ak
At point of collision, neither air bags deployed and seat belt did not work effectively to restrain my adolescent son. If the seat belt had restrained him properly and the air bag had indeed deployed; his teeth marks would not have been embedded into the dash. I firmly believe he and myself would not have suffered the amount of injuries if the mechanisms had worked properly. I had a head injury and whiplash, also. *js
Tl* the contact owned a 2010 chevrolet aveo. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle crashed into a bridge abutment and the air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed to a towing yard, where it was destroyed. The driver of the vehicle sustained seat belt burns to the chest and abdomen. The contact, who was a passenger in the front passenger seat, sustained hematoma on his right calf. The police appeared on the scene and filed a report. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a complaint was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 6,000. Updated 09/15/11*lj updated 2/23/12 *cn

As i was driving on the 805 freeway between h st and l st in san diego california my car started to smoke from the engine. I decided to pull over to let my car rest. This has never happened to me before. When i pulled over at 10:09 am the smoke started to come in through the air conditioner. I then got out to avoid smelling the smoke. When i got out of the vehicle not even a minute later the engine caught fire. I called 911 and a fire truck showed up at 10:18am. The flames devoured the whole front of my car, my engine, my interior, my vehicle is completely totaled. *tr

I bought my aveo new. At only 6,000 miles the master cylinder failed and 5,000 miles later the brake booster failed and i crashed--the air bags did not deploy. Gm would fixed the brake booster but not the damage to my car! At 13,000 miles the brake drums needed to be re-surfaced, the brake rotors needed to be cut, and i had to get new brake pads--again gm would not fix it and made me pay for it. At 16,000 miles the air bag sensor for the passenger failed. At 18,000 miles the gas gauge failed and the shifter got stuck in park, and the cruise control would work on and off. At 20,000 miles the all four tires needed to be replaced. Around this time, gas mileage dipped to about 19-21mpg, but gm couldn't figure out why. At 30,000 miles i had to get new rotors and brake pads--again i had to pay for it even though they are wearing out prematurely. At 35,000 miles the transmission started to shift hard so gm recommended i change the transmission fluid at a cost $450 because the fluid has a special additive that is shipped from korea! At 44,000 miles the engine died--more like blew up. Gm said that it is my fault for letting it run too hot, though i had no warning from any gauges, lights, ect... Again i had to fix it even though i had the 100,000 mile warranty. At 48,000 miles the a/c needed to be overhauled--i had to pay for it. At 52,000 miles i hit a deer and again the air bags did not deploy. The insurance company junked it. Absolutely without a doubt in my mind the worst car i have ever owned. Gm should be sued for this car. They do not honor the warranty at all. The service departments treated me with disrespect. A couple of dealers refused to even accept my car for repair. The car is very scary to drive and not safe at all. With all the money i spent fixing the car plus my car payment each month, i could have easily purchased a bmw instead. Gm is absolutely the worst folks to deal with. Never again will i buy or support anything from gm. *tr
Car type: 2005 chevy aveo problems i have had with this car; 1. Oxygen sensor needed replacement by 41,xxx miles 2. At 82,xxx mi. Wiring problems in fuse box wires came loose (possibly a fire hazard) burnt the wiring harness. (char marks on the wiring harness) caused the interior (instrument cluster panel) and exterior lights (daytime running lights)(yellow lowbeams that control turn signal) to turn off while driving the vehicle during the night time. Fix cost me $125.00 plus tax 8.25% this isn't the first time i've heard of this happening in fact its on many online forums as happening to several other people. 3. At 92,xxx miles. Thermostat housing cracked in the center where the thermostat is located at (thermostat housing is plastic) very cheaply made. No parts houses carry this item. Its a gm part. Got stranded 44 miles from home and had to get a tow truck to bring car home. Cost; $115.00 + tax corrections made to vehicle; 1. Purchased a new oxygen sensor for about $120.00 2. Taken electrical problem to a shop and had the shop fix it for 125.00 +tax 3. Problem still pending. Parts not available at part houses i.e. Autozone o'reileys a-line, advanced auto, etc....i believe parts houses do not wish to carry these parts. Part is too cheaply made for them to carry i believe the part should have been made out of metal.(steel, aluminum. Etc....) property damage: damage to wiring harness in vehicle chevy aveo fire: burnt wiring harness in vehicle, wires had to be soldered from a separate locality in engine compartment. *tr
I traded in a 2004 p.t.cruiser to get a 2005 chevy aveo at the time it had 21000 miles when i got it. My warranty was good till 36000. I had lots of issues with a noise that still to this day has not been corrected even after three attempts under my car by the chevy service dept. I then had a computer recall or something that had to be replaced i also had a gas cap that malfunctioned and a clock that had to be replaced. Those are the non life threatening issues. I had an incident inside of the original warranty where the car threw parts out of the engine. It was the serpentine belt and the bracket that was metal that it was mounted on broke out of the engine as i was driving it. I am currently at 55000 and i have the power train on it. In the last month i have had the car in my possession 1 week the rest it's been in the service dept. A month ago the plastic and yes that's plastic housing for the thermostat blew apart on the interstate causing us to have to dial 911 to get help because we were trapped. Two weeks ago it spit out the timing belt and the valves got bent and the valve cover was damaged. We don't know what particles ended up in the engine for now. I have contacted chevrolet on all these issues and i asked them before my warranty went out and right after the first incident to give me back the money for the car. They called me today and said i didn't have a case because the warranty was out i reminded them i had been asking since before at the first incident with the serpentine and bracket and they said sorry the warranty is out. I reminded them i have pictures of those parts and can prove it but that still wasn't good enough! I spoke to hannah a district specialist today and that is who lied to herself and said these occurrences were after the warranty. I have proof can you please help before my family dies and then we have dependents who will own the very company the gov't is trying to bail out. I need you to intervene before i go to court over this. *tr
Car: aveo 2004- 4d. The ac got damaged, then the blower. The car got overheaded and stopped working. $1,361 worth of work was done (machine work, head gasket set, gasket sealer, timing belt, sparks plugs, timing belt tensioner). Two weeks after the car started overheading again and had a strong smell of gas. The mechanic recommended to buy a clip to adjust the gas hose!! And to put water to coool it down... The problem continued. I got tired and took the car to another mechanic who awknowledged the first mechanic assembled some things backward. Less than an hour after picking up the car from the second mechanic and after i parked it...the car burst on fire... It is gone...gone! *tr

For approximately the last year i have been having issues with this car being sluggish on and off and now it sporadically has no power, when you press on the gas, you loose power at times. Now it just dies whenever! I have had it to multiple shops including the chevy dealer and nobody knows what is wrong. What is it going to take? Having it stall in traffic and having someone die? Apparently this is an issue with many chevy aveos! I really think this needs to be looked into! Would you want your wife, husband, son, daughter, mother or father driving a car that is this unreliable? *tr

I was rear ended and it was not a bad accident but needed a bumper and i noticed that after this happened my airbag sensor light came on. When we took the vehicle in for repair i told the technician that i was more concerned about the airbag sensor light then the bumper. They said they would look at it. When we picked up our vehicle they said they looked at the airbag light sensor and reset it. Now 6 months later the light is back on. I took it back and they suggested i check on the internet for any recalls. I did not see any. Can you suggest anything. I feel that they did not really properly check out the sensor light or to make sure the airbag is ok.

On july 21, 2014 at about 7:45 in the morning, my wife who was going to church went to the garage to use the aveo. When she opened the door, she was met with dark smoke and smell of burned plastic. Then she saw the middle of the dashboard burned creating a big hole. Then i had the aveo towed to the charles clark chevrolet where i bought the aveo for them to see. Then i went home and passing by the mailbox i got the mail and saw an envelope from general motors. When i opened the envelope, i saw the letter of the recall of the aveo due to the defective headlamp switch or daytime running lamp which generate heat which could melt headlamp switch and drl module causing fire. That was what happened to the aveo. So i called gm and told them what happened. Then after several days of calls and an inspection by their engineers, i was told that the damage was beyond repair and they will pay a little over $4,000 because they will not repair the aveo. I told them i do not agree because the aveo was in good condition at seven years old, less than 16,000 mileage, the tires were still the original tires when bought and had never been brought to a repair shop. So i told them to repair the aveo to its condition before the fire. I could not believe they cannot repair when they can create a new car. The recall was a safety-related defect and my wife was lucky she was not in the car when the fire happened. If the car was not burned, it would still be good for another seven years. With gm's proposal, my wife and i will incur a debt to get another car and when she retires as a nurse supervisor at texas state veterans home in two or three years, we will be burdened with a loan past our retirement. My wife is 72 years old now. We don't want that to happen. The consumer was informed, the parts were not available. Updated 09/24/14. Updated 03/04/15. *jb

I was driving to my mother's house, the car was not shifting right and the engine was whining, all of a sudden i smelled smoke and seen fire under the hood. Gm would only fix the harness , the vehicle would start again but you could not drive it. No power in the engine. So i had to eat $6400.00 dollars i owed and traded it with carbone auto in yorkville new york. They sold me a car with the abs lights on the traction lights on, the tire pressure lights come on and my doors lock and i have to climb over to the other seat to get out. The salesman knew these lights were on before i signed the papers and my car is still not fixed. This past winter i had no heat and got caught in an ice storm and my windows iced right over i could not see and hit a pole by my driveway and dented and scratch the whole right side of my car. It is carbone auto that made it so my aveo caught fire. They would not fix it, the car would never shift right the motor would whine out and they said oh that is the way a 1.6 liter car runs. I had the fidelity extract warranty and they would not fix the aveo i have lost 6400 dollars on these cars and it is the dealers fault, what do i do now my 2008 impala vin is [xxx] the salesman name is [xxx] he knew these lights were on before i signed the papers he said it would be fixed. 8 months later still not fixed. My daughter brought a 2011 chevy aveo in wisconsin. When she came back home there were several occasions that i used her car. The first time i drove her car i drove it to work. While i was driving at 55 mph the car jerked very hard to the left. I had to really hold the steering wheel harder than usual to gain control of the car. I called my daughter and asked her about the car jerking towards incoming traffic. My daughter stated that the car did jerk sometimes. I told my daughter to go get the car checked out. I told her to have them check the jerking out and why the car was wearing out tires so fast. My daughter had the car checked and she was told her car couldn't be aligned. My mom, my other daughter, her father, step father and myself drove the car at different times and it jerked while each of us drove it. Unfortunately, my daughter lost her life in an accident in that same chevy aveo in 2014. I was told to come to the hospital because there was an accident on august 1 at 11:45. When i arrived at the hospital the coroner and the state trooper met me in a waiting room. They explained to me that my daughter passed away in the car accident she was involved in. She had crossed over the median line and on the shoulder. She tried to correct herself and get back in her lane and was hit on the driver side and killed instantly. When they told me that i knew that the car had jerked on her again and this time cost my daughter her life. Yes, it was foggy and damp from the rain that evening. The police stated that a tire was slick and the road was wet. I was very glad that she was talking to her friend that night. Her friend was the one who called the police when she heard my daughter scream an the line went dead. I just want someone to know that something was wrong with that car. I looked online and found people who had the same problem with their aveo's as well. ...updated 02/11/15 *bf
*tr

Car went through garage door. I placed car in park to leave car momentarily. I t did not go into park properly and car proceeded forward through garage door. The cup holder had a coffee mug with a handle in it. I am assuming it stopped car from going into park fully. I had left car and shut door when car began to go forward through garage door. I jumped in and stopped car or it would have proceeded through a wall. It caused about 2000.00 worth of damage to car and door. This happened twice. The second time my husband was driving the car. He stopped car and proceeded to place car into park. It would not go completely into park. The same coffee mug was in holder. No damage happened this incident. We both witnessed the car refusing to go into park the second incident. *nm
At 60k miles the speedometer stopped working. Vehicle runs fine but not having a speedometer is a safety hazard. There are only a few transmissions that have this problem where the speedometer in operated by a plastic gear inside the transmission. I had to replace the transmission cost me 1600 dollars and the 9 months later that gear let go also. Again i had to change the transmission. The car will not pass inspection without the speedometer working. This is a faulty design and should have been recalled.

For the last two years at random times when i start my car, the brakes will not work. They can not even be pressed down. Whenever this happens, a corresponding weird revving that causes the car to lunge forward in such a way that it doesn't usually also happens. I parallel park on a street daily, and one morning when this happened ended up hitting the car in front of me. Usually the problem stops happening after driving for about 1/2 a mile, but it is pretty scary trying to drive without brakes to get to that 1/2 mile mark. Especially since whenever the brakes won't work the car also seems to accelerate on its own. I have tried to get this fixed multiple times but it always stops happening by the time i get to the mechanic and i've left my car overnight at a mechanic twice and they haven't been able to recreate the issue. I can't part with my car for an entire week so that this problem can be diagnosed. *tr

This aveo has only 7,552 miles and when accelerated to pull out it has no power.when you do get out in road it only goes 15-20 mpg even when acceleration is to the floor.i had to pull over to the side of road-turned it off and restarted then drove it about 2 miles and it did it again-very dangerous-unsafe-hope someone looks into this.

Identified online there was a prior issue documented for 2011 chevrolet aveo with front end suspension. I am being told by dealer this is a wheel bearing issue there were 2 numbers assigned that begin with an " n and t". I became afraid to drive the vehicle because of the information i located and the noise it made when in motion. My car has been serviced regularly bu chevrolet and this is really a major concern to learn of this problem. I purchased the vehicle in 2012 and strangely this automobile is not no longer a product of chevrolet. I have never been advised of a safety recall and do not want to be a fatality and when there were opportunities to correct the situation by chevrolet. I do value my life as well as others who are not being notified of defects in automobiles they purchase. We deserve better customer service and support.

I was driving on the highway when the engine light came on. The vehicle ran for a few minutes before it started losing power and chugging along on the highway. When i pulled off, i had to flutter on the gas to keep the car from stalling at the stop sign. To make it home on the back roads, i did not stop at stop signs for fear of the car stalling, i had the gas pedal to the floor and it was only going approximately 10 mph. I did not drive it to the dealership, it was towed. They found several engine control module updates. Reflashed ecm code s47490d. Performed campaign 11290 spark plugs and boot. While at dealership, tech found rear shocks were leaking. E5807 - rear shock absorbers replaced, both sides. *tr
