How to read a Chevrolet Malibu VIN — every digit explained

Every Chevrolet Malibu carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Malibu.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Malibu VIN

Visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac System13V567000

What's wrong. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured June 12, 2013, through November 5, 2013. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control in these vehicles may intermittently become inoperable when the vehicle is started, preventing the windshield defroster from working. Thus, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 103, "Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems."

Risk. The inability to turn on the windshield defroster may decrease the driver's visibility thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the electronic climate control module software, free of charge. The recall began during December 2013. Owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300. GM's recall campaign number is 13380.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic:power Assist:vacuum14V247000

What's wrong. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured June 12, 2013, through May 2, 2014, and equipped with a 2.5L engine with the auto stop/start option. The affected vehicles may experience a complete loss of brake vacuum assist, disabling the hydraulic boost assist. As such, these vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Risk. If the hydraulic boost assist is disabled, slowing or stopping the vehicle will require additional brake pedal effort and a lengthened stopping distance. Both of these effects increase the risk of a crash.

Fix. GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the electronic brake control module software, free of charge. The recall began on July 3, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020. General Motors number for this recall is 14201.

Power Train:automatic Transmission14V092000

What's wrong. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Regal, LaCrosse, Verano, and Enclave, and Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Cruze, and Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjuster may disengage from the transmission shift lever. As such, these vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect." They also fail to conform to FMVSS number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."

Risk. If a vehicle's shift cable disengages from the transmission shift lever, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the driver may be able to shift the lever to the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

Fix. General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. The recall began on April 10, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Buick owners at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC owners at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors' number associated with this recall is 14048.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.

Risk. Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.

Fix. GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. 2006 Chevrolet Malibu recalls 9

Air Bags:frontal06V417000

What's wrong. Certain vehicles originally built with cloth seats that were equipped with an automatic air bag passenger sensing system and later reupholstered with aftermarket leather seat cover kits are involved. Testing has indicated that the aftermarket leather seat covers can cause the passenger sensing system to malfunction.

Risk. If the passenger sensing system malfunctions, the front air bag on the passenger side may be disabled when it should be enabled, or enabled when it should be disabled. In either case, in the event of a crash that requires air bag deployment, a front passenger's level of injury may be increased.

Fix. Because a replacement leather seat cover that is compatible with the passenger sensing system is not available, general motors (gm) will repurchase these vehicles in accordance with the terms stated in gm's letter to owners. The recall began on november 6, 2006. Owners should contact gm at 1-877-477-1022 to begin the process of repurchasing their vehicle.

Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly:filler Pipe And Cap99V302000

What's wrong. Certain passenger vehicles fail to comply with requirements of fmvss no. 301, "fuel system integrity." the fuel fill fitting is not properly secured to the fuel tank. In that condition, fuel leakage would exceed the permissible amount in an fmvss test. Fuel leaks may occur, particularly after refueling or when the tank is more than half full.

Risk. If an ignition source were present, a fire could occur.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the fuel tank and replace it if necessary.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu recalls 5

Visibility:windshield Wiper/washer:linkages01V068000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the "salt belt" states: alaska, colorado, connecticut, delaware, idaho, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, montana, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, north dakota, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, utah, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and wyoming. If a buildup of snow or ice restricts the movement of the passenger side windshield wiper arm, the pivot housing can crack and the wipers will not operate.

Risk. Reduced visibility in inclement weather could lead to a vehicle crash.

Fix. Dealers will replace the passenger side windshield wiper pivot housing. Owner notification began august 14, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537.

Steering:rack And Pinion03V527000

What's wrong. Certain passenger vehicles have lower pinion bearings in the power rack and pinion assembly in which the retainer tabs were not crimped properly. These retainers could fail and permit the ball bearings to escape.

Risk. If this occurs, the pinion shaft can be forced upward during left turns and back down as the steering wheel is moved back and to the right. If the pinion shaft moves further, the driver will need to exert more effort to turn the steering wheel, similar to a vehicle without power assisted steering. If the pinion shaft moves even further, the driver will require much higher effort to turn left and may not be able to turn the wheel as much as intended. With the maximum pinion shaft movement, which requires internal gear component damage, the driver can encounter high resistance to turning left, followed by unintended power assist to the right. In any of these conditions, a crash could occur.

Fix. Dealers will install a new lower pinion bearing unless inspect of the existing bearing indicates that replacement of the gear assembly is necessary. Owner notification began on february 5, 2004. Owners should contact buick at 1-866-608-8080; chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537; or pontiac at 1-800-620-7668.

2005 Malibu

On 28 feb 2016 around 11:50 am, me, my two daughters and my mom was headed north on i-185. While riding we were talking about what we was going to put in the house we had just gotten approved for that friday and in mid conversation as i'm going around the curve my car goes over the fog line and i couldn't get the car back into my lane and before i knew it i hit the median (wall) on the left side, my hood flew up and the car bounced off the wall and all i really remember from that point is smashing on break but apparently the car kept going, hit the right side of the wall and came to a stop there. Next thing i know a man was waking me up asking am i okay and said help was on the way. I heard my daughter crying for her sister because she wouldn't move so i get out the car and began to get them out to assure they're okay and everything else is really a blur. I remember a man helping my mom out the car as me and my kids sat on the ground waiting for help and i remember going to the hospital with my kids.

I wanted to submit my complaint after receiving a recall letter about my former car. In december of 2013 i was driving on the road after it had rained. I lost control of the vehicle. Car went off the edge of the road. Was unable to control car through steering or braking. We slid down the hill fishtailing. Rear end hit signs which sent me into a spin and shattered the rear window. Front of car was stopped by several trees- cracking windshield/crushing front end. Deploying air bags. Car was totaled. My two children in the back seat had seat belt burn and cuts from glass. I had multiple bruises, cuts, burn from seat belt. Hit head and briefly lost consciousness. 2019 Malibu

The Apple CarPlay system, specifically the GPS/navigation function, froze and malfunctioned. This occurred in two separate vehicles I’ve owned: a 2019 Chevy Malibu and now a 2019 Chevy Equinox (the vehicle involved in the accident). Both cars frequently experienced lagging and freezing while using Apple CarPlay. The infotainment system and vehicle are available for inspection. On June 28, 2025, while driving at night with GPS active via CarPlay, the system froze and gave me an incorrect instruction — telling me to turn left onto a one-way street in the wrong direction. I did not realize I was going the wrong way until reaching the intersection, and by that point, I was involved in a head-on car accident. This presented a significant danger to me and others on the road. The issue has not been officially reproduced or confirmed by a service center, but it occurred consistently in two different GM vehicles. I have text message documentation sent to my family over the months before the accident describing the freezing and lagging of CarPlay. The accident and vehicle were reviewed by insurance representatives, but no inspection was done specifically on the infotainment/GPS system by the manufacturer. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages. However, the symptom was consistent lagging and freezing of the CarPlay interface, which had been happening for months prior. There were no official error codes displayed before the crash.

2013 Malibu

I was riding in the car with my wife and cousin heading to her brothers house. We had just drove from out of town after visiting some family members and was taking my cousin back home. While driving i notice the car electrical system acting up it would say i needed to put air in the tire or the back tire was not functioning correctly. It also would say i needed to put my seat belt on when it was on. But this was not my biggest concern my wife while driving ran off the road a struck a tree head on. Had she had been driving faster then what she was going i fell as if she would have been severely injured. The airbags never came out and this was a concern because who knows how many vehicles are affected by this. I thank god that her injuries were not that serve as well as my cousin and i, although pain will heal the pain of losing a love one will never heal. So i ask that you look into because this is a safety concern, i know if had my wife been told that her airbags may or may not deploy she would have never brought the car....... *tr

I will give you more information when i receive some documents from other family members. Thank you *tr

2012 Malibu

My service traction control light was coming on ever since i bought my car and i took it to koons for service and i was told one wheel was moving faster then another not to worry about it then on 06/18/2014 iwas hit by a chevy silverado that ran a light and i was doing 45 miles an hour i had my granddaughter in her safety seat in the back none of my air bags worked nor did my seat belts my grand daughter hit the back of the seats.now my car is flashing the codes again now that its fixed and shuts down while driving .its part of the gm recall for the upper wire harness but they are saying it isn't and they are not standing buy the warranty this defect almost killed us and still is almost killing us by shutting down while driving service traction control lights coming on plus air bag lights saying air bags are shutting down .so that means the air bags if we needed them would not help us again if needed.we were very badly hurt the last time and i need gm to step up and reimburse us for our injuries and for making us still ride in an unsafe car that they now is on the recall list but they keep saying its not.my car is still in service and service is saying it is part of the recall bit gm will not take responsibility. .. *tr

2010 Malibu

Right now i have the service esc and service traction light on again for the 3rd time. I took each time to chevy classic in grapevine tx and they told me no codes the 1st time, took it to clay cooley in irving--light came on then no codes they showed. Today 4-15=16 light came on again and i took it to classic chevy and they found 3 codes this time. They say i will have to pay for this! I should not since there was an open recall on 5/14/2014 for 2010 malibu's. My car is doing this now !@!!@ it needs to be fixed at no charge to me!! I feel like this is the most dangerous car on the road for me and my daughter. I don't want to be a statistic if we have a car crash and it was all because chevy kept making excuses to not fix my crap car for me. The other recall was the brake system not illuminating i got that letter a little too late . Someone rear ended me in oct 2012 while i was stopped at a red light. Maybe those stupid back brake lights were not working then!!!!!! Someone at classic or clay cooolye chevy needs to fix this esc light on my car and fix all the recalls for free. I also have an eps recall letter that was sent to me but someone at chevy told me the light has to come on for them to fix it. This is ridiculous. My car needs to be fixed for all these problems it has no matter if the light is on or not. But the light is on for service esc and traction right now!@ gm or chevy needs to pay for it and fix this car. The consumer stated the dealer did not completely fix the problem. They only lubricated and she continued to experience problems with the brakes, service light and esc light. Also, the front axle was leaking.

In july of 2005 i was involved in a accident due to the fact i was unable to stop this vehicle. I did not realize at the time that i had the ability to file a complaint to a federal safety organization. This vehicle has now had 5 brake jobs, the last being today. The front rotors had to be repaired because the vehicle was difficult to stop and had severe vibration during braking. The mileage on this vehicle is 101000 miles. At the last brake overhaul it was noted that the rear brakes were not working, ( the vehicle was delivered to me this way new) this problem was reported as repaired. I purchased this vehicle new from gamblin motors in apr 1999 and as i have stated 5 brake repairs in 101000 miles. In july 2005 the reason i rear ended a vehicle was i was unable to stop due to poor braking action. This vehicle has had 3 sets of front rotors and brake pads and the rotors have been turned (trued on 2 separate occasions). I have filed complaints with gm about this problem and it has been disregarded. This may be because the original complaint was because of coolant system leaks that caused damage to the engine. *nm

On jan 6 2020. I was driving a 2016 chevy malibu, when the check engine light and engine reduce power light came on. I pulled over and let the car seat for maybe 10 mins. I restarted the vehicle and begin driving again (it was pulling normal). About 3 miles down the road i was making a left turn and the car stop pulling and the reduce engine power light comes on which leaves me in the middle of a intersection section causing a vehicle coming from my right side to slam into the side of vehicle deploying all of my airbags and making on-star assistance come on. In the result i have neck, back and side injury from the impact. Which in the result i'm getting sued because my car stalled in the middle of the turn going left. My car was totaled out and my insurance don't want to pay the full value of what i was leasing it for. Which i have to come out the pocket with expenses. After reviewing the "engine reduce power" and doing my research i come to find out it has been numerous complaints. I could have lost my life!

2019 Malibu

The vehicle experienced a serious and ongoing electrical and system malfunction shortly after being returned from repairs related to a prior accident. Within a short period of driving, multiple warning messages and system errors began appearing simultaneously, indicating failures across several vehicle systems. The issues included repeated computer system faults affecting critical functions. The malfunction made the vehicle unreliable and unsafe to operate, as the errors appeared suddenly and without warning while driving. This created a significant safety risk due to the potential loss of vehicle control and unpredictable system behavior. The problem has been persistent and has not been properly resolved. The vehicle has remained at a repair facility for an extended period, where it has not been successfully diagnosed or repaired due to lack of proper equipment or manufacturer-certified technicians capable of addressing the issue. The defect has been observed but not corrected, and the vehicle has not been restored to safe operating condition. The condition has prevented normal use of the vehicle and has caused ongoing safety concerns. Warning indicators and system messages appeared prior to full failure and continued throughout attempts to operate the vehicle. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Car remain in shop over 6 months not full repair from electrical problem, head light issues and air bag defectiveness.

2016 Malibu

1999 Malibu

*nm

Purchased vehicle 5/04/01. Had to return 2 days later for melted brake light sockets on left rear. Bulbs were replaced. Melted again within 3 weeks. Went back to dealer, was told they couldn't check it they were too busy. Made appointment to have fixed. They replaced bulbs and reworked socket but it still failed. They said that there is nothing else they can do. I have replaced bulbs on average every 2-3 weeks. I think they have an electrical short causing the bulbs to melt the sockets. Now the turn signal and back-up lights are starting to melt. The interior dome light also works sporadically. Front brakes shudder when applied and have been replaced, rotors were cut. Still having shudder and extended stopping distances.*ak
