How to read a Ducati Panigale VIN — every digit explained
Every Ducati Panigale carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Panigale.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Panigale VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 ducati panigale v4 motorcycle. The contact stated that the motorcycle mirror's plastic housing fractured. Each time the contact attempted to adjust the mirrors, the plastic assembly failed and the mirrors fractured. The failure was experienced numerous times. The contact took the motorcycle to go az motorcycles (15500 north hayden road, scottsdale, az 85260, (480) 609-1800) where the mirrors and plastic covers were replaced under warranty. The contact was concerned that the mirror covers that were used would not correct the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 2,000. Attached are pictures of the defective mirrors that break easily on the 2018 ducati panigale v4, v4s, and v4 speciale.*jb

The fuel tank of my Ducati V4 get very hot and the fuel inside start boiling, i discovered the issue when the motorcycle was stored in my garage after a ride, some noise was coming from the fuel tank, i opened the cap and i saw the fuel gurgling. I panicked and i put the motorcycle outside because, being the fuel very flammable, i was worried about a fire starting or even an explosion. The accident occurred at the end of the riding season here in Colorado, October 2023 more or less, since that period of time i didn't ride the motorcycle because i think that is dangerous to ride. Today, 03/28/2024 i was looking for a solution of the problem and i discovered that Ducati implemented a solution for the problem on Model Year 2024 applying a thermo-reflecting protection on the fuel tank consisting in three different parts numbers: part # 4601G941A QTY 1 price 40.63 USD part # 4601G951A QTY 1 price 40.63 USD part # 4601G961A QTY 1 price 40.63 USD I contacted Ducati to ask if they are planning to do a recall campaign to solve the issue on older motorcycles applying the thermo-reflecting protection on the fuel tank and they answered that it is only a running change in production only. Because in my opinion is a safety concern i decided to report it, also it is not fair that the customer is left with a defective fuel system when there is already a solution that the manufacturer acknowledged by introducing a design change. This issue is quite common all over the internet with a lot of people complaining about it, a lot of people solved it applying aftermarket thermo-reflecting mats at the cost of 185 USD. From the day I bought the V4 it stalled and started developing DTC Errors. My bike was in the shop for 3 months before Ducati replaces the BBS ECU and fixed the issue. Since there have been multiple reports of stalling and DTC errors. These are dangerous as the bike stalles while slowing and could affect engine breaking or Stopping. This issue should be investigated and corrected. It is likely the BBS units have faulty components causing the DTC error and fueling issues.
