How to read a Ford Escape VIN — every digit explained
Every Ford Escape carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Escape.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Escape VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Engine And Engine Cooling
What's wrong. Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
Risk. A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
Fix. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. The safety recall began August 3, 2012. Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Fix. Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
Power Train:automatic Transmission:lever And Linkage:floor Shift
What's wrong. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
Risk. If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Fix. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.

Seat Belts:front:buckle Assembly
What's wrong. On certain sport utility vehicles, a post within the safety belt buckle covers could fracture, which could affect latch function, resulting in either a "no latch" or "partial latch" condition. In the "partial latch" condition, the buckle tongue can be inserted into the buckle and appear to be engaged, but will release from the buckle without the push button being depressed when a relatively low load is applied, such as when an occupant moves slightly in the seat.
Risk. In the event of a crash, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix. Dealers will have the driver and front passenger safety belt buckle cover removed and replaced with a newly designed service buckle cover. Owner notification began on february 2, 2004. Owners should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.
Visibility:windshield Wiper/washer:linkages
What's wrong. Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles. The windshield wiper linkage can disengage due to a broken ball socket.
Risk. This condition will likely result in sudden and complete loss of the windshield wiper function, or of the wiper function on the driver side only, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the wiper module.
Vehicle Speed Control
What's wrong. Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles equipped with speed control. The speed control cable can have a cracked or missing speed control cable servo cap locating tab. The locating tab could enter the servo clutch cavity and interfere with the speed control servo clutch. Also, water could enter those units that contain a cracked or missing servo cap locating tab, eventually causing corrosion that could interfere with the function of the speed control.
Risk. If either of these conditions occurs and the speed control is used, the speed control could prevent the throttle from returning to idle, resulting in a stuck throttle. A stuck throttle could result in a crash.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the speed control cables. Vehicles with speed control cables from cavities 3 and 4 will have the cable the speed control servo replaced.
Steering: Steering Wheel/handle Bar
What's wrong. Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles. These vehicles may have a mis-assembled or incorrectly manufactured nut that attaches the steering wheel assembly to the steering column. The nut could be upside down in the steering wheel assembly, which could overstress the steering column shaft when the nut is tightened. In addition, some of the nuts may have been cracked during manufacture resulting in the nut fracturing when it is tightened during vehicle assembly.
Risk. Either of these conditions can lead to the steering wheel becoming loose or separating from the steering column, resulting in loss of steering control.
Fix. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering wheel retention armature and, if necessary, the steering column to correct this condition.
Fuel System, Gasoline:delivery
What's wrong. Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles. The o-ring seals in the fuel line connector at the outlet end of the fuel filter were damaged when the line was connected to the filter during vehicle assembly. In some cases, this damage could result in a fuel odor, or possibly in fuel dripping from the connection.
Risk. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Fix. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel line. Owner notification began september 27, 2000. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.

On december 26, 2019, another other vehicle hit this 2018 ford escape, spinning it into another vehicle. This escape caught on fire and was totally destroyed. All involved vehicles (all fords) were in motion traveling about 50 mph. This escape was traveling north on route 122 near burnt chimney, va. The other two fords were traveling south on this two lane road.
While my family and I were returning from lunch and pulling into a parking space at my moms apartment complex, my 2015 Ford escape SE eco-boost, had a sudden unintentional acceleration where it basically accelerated forward and we hit a building. During this, the brakes were unresponsive, and there was building and vehicle damage. Luckily, the post to the building prevented us from driving through the entire building. I have read several reports of the Ford escape experiencing this exact problem. We are lucky we were not killed. Ford has had no recalls for this very deadly issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 ford escape. The contact stated that while driving at 67 mph, the cruise control failed to disengage. As a result, the contact crashed into an embankment and the vehicle rolled over multiple times. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained minor scrapes and bruises and the two passengers in the rear of the vehicle sustained bumps, bruises and scrapes that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v353000 (engine and engine cooling , vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000.
My fianc and i were pulling out of our driveway when the vehicle suddenly stalled and stopped completely. The vehicle was then hit by another vehicle the side airbag didn't deploy and my fianc is very lucky to be alive! It wasn't until we purchased this vehicle that we realized that this particular vehicle has had so many recalls. There also has been so many official stalling complaints that an investigation had beeen necessary! Since the accident, the stalling issue has not improved but worsens and is now stalling everytime we put gas into the vehicle. It stalls and won't start again. He was driving on a major highway; upon exiting the highway the vehicle stalled and shut completely off at the highway exit ramp luckily he was able to pull the vehicle off on the shoulder or he would have been involved in yet another accident and potentially killed! Ford really needs to address this problem! These vehicles have been well maintained and from what i have read most are having this same issue from the beginning of owning the vehicle. When my fianc was injured in the first stalling accident we weren't the owners of the vehicle, my aunt was allowing us to borrow her vehicle and she recently sold it to us; now that we own the vehicle we realize that the accident could have been prevented and should have! Also i understand the side airbag not deploying is another recall issue that hasn't been addressed with our suv!
2010 ford escape was pulling out of a parking spot, foot off the accelerator, but vehicle proceeded to gain speed and go forward striking another vehicle. Unintended acceleration
We bought our car used in 2008/2009. We took our car into a dealership when it was under warranty because of exhaust fumes. We often are smelling exhaust but since the dealership dismissed our problem we have been dealing with it all these years as 'normal'. I recently was hearing of police officers with ford vehicles passing out or having damage because of the fumes in their ford suv. I took my daughter to the doctor a few years ago after being on a trip in the vehicle because she was throwing up on the way there and back. The doctors gave her back x-rays and said that it was just motion sickness.. She often complains of being sick in the car. I also don't like the fumes, but just drive it. Now i realize it may be a problem that was ignored by ford to begin with. The more i drive it the more dizzy spells i have during the day. The fumes are almost immediately when we run the vehicle and when driving. This is been re-accuring since we bought the vehicle with around 50k, now it has 212k miles.
Since buying my escape brand new with 1 mile on it, it has been plagued with issues, engine shuts off while driving can be going 30 mph or 70 mph, while driving on the interstate at 70 bad smell from catalytic converter seeps in through vents. Passenger side tire wall blew while turning out of a parking lot. License plate light out and unable to remove to change. Dealership has had car several times claiming nothing is wrong with it. Radio keeps saying "update" dealership claims it's my phone (my phone has no updates due) brakes make terrible noise when reverse breaking. A little over 11,000 miles and transmission keeps slipping but dealership claims nothing is wrong, also car does not want to start half the time. Usb for phone cord in front does not want to stay connected, and back port for car charger overheated and caused my daughter burns on her hand. My daughter was driving it and it stranded her on side of road and wouldn't start, had to shut off ,take out key and let sit to restart but dealership claims nothing is wrong. Overall the disappointment with the 2019 escape is high. Something needs to be done further to investigate these claims of engine shutting off and other issues.
While traveling in a rotary our car was struck violently by a vehicle on the left trying to make an incorrect exit. The impact was hard enough to cause the engine to stop operating resulting in a total loss of steering land braking. Because of no power, the steering did not respond nor did the brakes. The damage to the car was primarily cosmetic and little mechanical damage. The airbags did not deploy and if the car had remained in control it could have been stopped before it proceeded into the oncoming land causing damage to this vehicle and the one that was hit. If there is some type of device to turn an engine off when hit with all of our power steering and brakes this is a problem when the vehicle is still operable.
When driving the vehicle it suddenly lost all acceleration power. I coasted to side of road and opened hood to determine the vehicle was on fire from rear of engine bay. I then proceeded to offload what I was able from behind the vehicle of my tools for my job. There was no over heat warning or other indicators of any major issues with the vehicle prior to the fire.
As i pulled into a parking spot, i took my foot off the gas and went to brake. The car lurched forward and accelerated causing me to lose control. I was pumping the brake, but the car didn't stop, causing me to hit a cement pole on the passenger side, and continuing into a brick building. The air bags did not deploy, but the seatbelt tightened and i got 2 broken ribs and terrible bruising wherever the belt impacted my body. The car had to be totaled because of extensive damage to the body and under the hood.

Was struck in the rear end by another vehicle, evidently, after that the two front hub bearings went bad. Dealership stated it was not due to accident.*ak
On 9/14/23 after starting car parked on level surface, I placed car in Drive, but it went in Reverse. The vehicle was supposedly repaired for Safety Recall Notice 22S43 by dealer. I placed car back in park, then shifted back to Drive and it moved forward as expected. Later in day while my wife was driving, she experienced difficulty in disengaging cruise control and when she tapped brakes, vehicle began spinning 360 degrees, slid sideways off interstate, and auto was totaled. Upon impact the right, rear passenger door was unlocked and somehow opened on its own ejecting passenger. Vehicle is currently in salvage yard at IAA Odgen, 1800 S 1100 West, Ogden, UT 84401. I don't know if the faulty transmission had anything to do with accident, but it seems like today we drive computers and not a mechanical motor vehicle.

Takata recall i was driving in the far left lane of the freeway on my way to work and my car shut off, sometimes my cars does not start. I have had alternator, starter tested, and they are good, my camshaft sensor replaced, ignition switch replaced, spark plugs replaced, i keep a good handle on maintenance up, but my car shutting off while i am driving and sometimes don't turn on at all is keep happening, my steering wheel locks up, very hard to turn, all components in my car don't come on, gears light pops on and off, dashboard light sometime flickers. I have had my back lights. And it continues to happen. *tr
"takata recall" on may 11th 2019, my auntie and i were involved in a accident that was no fault of my own. A black toyota stop in front of when us, i hit the brakes on impact, the airbags deployed and blowup in my face, knocking out one of my crowns and shift my teeth, i went to the dentist office after leaving the hospital, the doctor told me i swallowed particles and my left side of my face would not stop hurting, i also let the dentist know the airbag blowup in my face, he found my root canal was framed in half, in order to fix the problem i would have to pay 12,000.00 of my own money to repair the tooth and other damage teeth that were shifted or i would loose them in the future, i haven't smiled sense.i was driving north bound on highway they were traveling east bound at a four way crossing into a gas station.
On 1/9/20 the car had its last dangerous malfunction of so many sense i purchased the vehicle from a dealership 10/18. The car was parked in a beach parking lot. As my son was getting ready to leave the parking lot he turned car on put car in drive slightly stepped on gas to begin pulling out and the car surged and accelerated full speed by itself. He lost all steering and had no breaks. He had absolutely no control of the vehicle. It went full speed into a parked car about 15 ft away! Both cars were totaled. All 3 people involved were injured. There was 2 people in parked car and my son who was burrowing my car. Previous to this accident the escape has had so many dangerous malfunctions. Some being total steering loss while i was driving 45mph .car was towed and fixed covered by factory recall. Another shock snapped and punctured my fuel tank. My mechanic said i dodged death by driving . He said car was a ticking bomb. Ive replaced 2 abs sensors at different times because they failed and caused break pedel to vibrate and made it very hard to stop. Another wheel bearing and wheel compartment due to total rust and corrosion of under body. All these things happened in only a little over a year sense purchasing this vehicle from mid cape moters for 6000$ in october. *ln *tr *js
Went to stop on wet road traction control kicked in wheels locked up causing me not be able to guide myself off the road from hitting car it front slide the whole car shut down doors locked causing me to not be able to get out had to kick the door open and my phone was hooked up to the bluetooth and no cops were contacted like i was told it would be! It felt like my car was a robot and shut completely down and i could not do anything after hitting my brakes it was like having no tires from that point on and my car only had 9,000 miles on it!
I was driving in maine. I'm not sure if i hit a patch of ice or if the steering froze up. I was traveling 35 in a 40 mph zone and on a curve, the vehicle veered off the road into a bog. The vehicle started to sink and i was unable to open the door for a few minutes. Then i noticed a flame coming from the back of the vehicle. It took all of my strength but i pushed the door open and began swimming away from the vehicle. As i was about 20 feet from the vehicle, it exploded. I was in the water and ice for approx. 10 minutes. The fire dept, police, and emt's arrived and pulled me from the water and took me to the hospital. I have 2nd degree burns on my arm and legs. My insurance company has deemed the vehicle a total loss and the adjuster said the only thing that could be salvaged was 1/2 of my license plate. I asked what could have caused this and the adjuster said that perhaps it was an electrical problem and water mixed with the electrical problem may have caused the fire. Although he did state that he was speculating and he did not know what caused the fire and explosion. The vehicle is sitting and i have asked that it not be destroyed (what's left of it) until the cause can be determined. This concerns me greatly because i do not want this to happen to anyone else. I believe if anyone else had been in the vehicle, they would not have had time to escape. There was no smoke - only fire and then the explosion. The shock is starting to wear off and i keep asking myself how in the world a car could "just explode". Please let me know if anyone else has had any problem like this or if anyone can suggest what may have caused this catastrophe. Thank you. *tr

Driving down a street in my neighborhood when the brakes failed. In previous occurrences i was told that the calipers froze up and that the brakes would make a grinding noise. Also the computer system on the vehicle would never record the proper amount of fuel in the tank or at times engage the brakes. I am not a professional but i know this vehicle did have issues. The vehicle was in motion on a city street and when i applied the brakes nothing happened. Upon impact it appeared i hit the steering wheel before the airbag deployed. I had my seat belt on. I have driven down that city road thousands of times but it appeared this time there was a issue with he vehicle that caused this accident. Injuries were airbag related. *tr

My vehicle shut off while i was driving on the highway. The check engine light flashed for a few seconds and then the whole car shut off while i was doing 70 on the highway. Thankfully nobody was hurt but i'm lucky to be alive. Cars swerving everywhere! When i took it to the dealer they say it was a cylinder misfire and its caused by coolant leaking into the engine through porous materials used by FORD. Its been to several ford dealerships. They inspect it, they know right away what the issue is because they see it all the time and they all say the same thing. Yes we know about it, no we wont fix it. I spoke to ford about the issue and they admitted that they know about the problem but they're refusing to recall my vehicle. These vehicles are at risk hurting thousands of people. Im being told that these engines were used in most ford vehicles from 2012 on... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

*ln *tr *js

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Escape. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V413000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. We were rear ended from a stopped position on the highway. . My fianc was driving and suffered whiplash. I was in the front passenger seat and broke my back and separated my pelvis, requiring surgery to stabilize. The front passenger seat is now very squeaky. Concerned there was an issue with the passenger seat or seatbelt not functioning properly, leading to my injuries.
Vehicle involved in collision on major highway with two other vehicles. Given speed and impact of collision very surprised that the air bags did not deploy.

I was in a head on collision where my vehicle went off the road and hit a guard rail head on. My vehicle was totaled but not a single air bag deployed. If I was not wearing my seat belt I could have been ejected from the vehicle. There were no warning lights of any kind shown. It was raining and wet out during the day.
On october 3, 2018 at approximately 5:15 p.m. My wife was getting into our 2017 ford escape. She had the driver door open, but the key was not in the ignition and the vehicle was not running, as she was getting in she felt a jolt, the vehicle started rolling backward, the driver's door sideswiped our other car and knocked her to the ground. The car rolled across the street and struck the car port beam at the adjacent home. She yelled for help and when i got there she was trying to stop the rolling car. The car was in park, i started the car and moved it off the street.

A car cut me off and I rear ended them going under 20 miles per hour. And my air bags went off and they exploded and I recieved chemical burns
While driving down highway 82, a fire started in the engine compartment, there was no notice of a fire within the cab. No smell and no visible smoke. After being flagged down about it, we managed to get out of the car and save just a few things out of the car, before the front half of the vehicle became engulfed in flames.
Takata recall my vehicle had endless issues and problems. I would drive a mile or so to gas station, turn off car, get gas and then the car wouldn't start or drive 15 miles, do a job, 30 minutes later get in and the car wouldn't start. It took several times for the vehicle to turn over and then stay running. I would throw it into gear to get the engine running and sometimes it'd be fine, other times it would bog down and stall. I got into an accident and my car was totaled. I had mechanics look at the issue and they would say the o2 sensor, wastegate solenoid or evap leak. They would nickel and dime me with all these little things. The codes were, p0234,p26b7 and p0456. They said coolant was getting into the fuel system and that was contributing to the stalling and problems. I had to see a chiropractor after my accident due to spinal pain and discomfort. However, it was worth this getting rid of this lemon once and for all. If anyone else is experiencing these problems, post the fix so that it can save someone else from financial, emotional and physical pain. I didn't let anyone drive my vehicle(wife/family) because i never knew when it would stall and where.
Please forward to appropriate personnel, on thursday, august 14th at ~5:45pm a clear day: our mom/mother in-law had just dropped of my daughter after shopping and was making her way home thru the windy back roads less than two miles from our home. As she climbed a hill a few blocks around the corner from her home and stopped at a stop sign on the crest of the hill. The 2012 ford escaped lurched/surged forward uncontrollably. As from her description, she heard loud rumblings coming from the engine; the escape shook and launched her forward while she had her foot on the brake. The escape propelled her uncontrollably forward crashing into a large boulder, she then ricocheted across two lanes up hill, over an embankment /wall, just missing a tree, collided with another parked vehicle pushing it approximately three feet, passed that into another small wall just missing the house. We are thankful on many levels; that our daughter was not with her, that our mom was not severely injured and no one else was injured. I was researching online and there was an investigation open for this vehicle at one time. A recall is needed for this vehicle model before there is a fatality involved. We are very concerned knowing that many other family members and friends drive escape models. Please feel free to contact us with any questions. We have many pictures from the scene for you to review. Kind regards, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Takata recall
As I was driving home with about 5 minutes to go, in my brand new (2 week old)2023 Ford Escape, I smelled something burning. I pulled over and saw smoke so I turned off the car and got out. As I got out of the car I looked under and saw fire. I got away from the car and as I did, the fire kept growing and growing from under the hood. The fire went high enough to hit the trees on the side of the roasd. The police and fire department came and were able to put out the fire but not before the car was distroyed. There were no warning lights or any other symtoms of a problem prior to smelling burning. The Ford company has not responded to me from the day my wife spoke to a representative on Monday, October 2nd. The car fire was on Saturday, September 30th. It's been 3 days. My insurance company was going to do an inspection. Ford wants nothing to do with us. We have a police report and a fire report. This clearly was a engine or electrical problem with this car. I was lucy this happened on a small street and not on the highway where pulling over would have been difficult. Lucky I could smell it so I knew to stop. Lucky I didn't have one or both of my toddler grandchildren in the back seat in their car seats! I would never have been able to get them out in time!
I am writing to formally demand immediate action regarding my 2022 Ford Escape, VIN [XXX] a 0% financing plan and Ford’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Since purchase, the Escape has suffered serious safety defects, including gasoline fumes inside the cabin, burning odors, and repeated performance failures tied to the fuel system. On [XXX] and again on [XXX], the vehicle flamed up while being driven, requiring emergency intervention to extinguish. In August 2025, Ford issued Safety Recall 25S76, admitting that these vehicles may suffer fuel injector cracking, fuel leaks, and under-hood fires while being driven. Ford further admitted that no permanent repair remedy exists. The interim software update provided does not correct the defect. As a retired U.S. Army Combat Medic and Purple Heart recipient, I live with PTSD triggered by vehicle fires and explosions. The Escape’s condition has placed me in a state of medical crisis, making it impossible for me to safely operate the vehicle. FORD HAS DISCONTINUED THE LINE. I WANT A REPLACEMENT CAR OR I WANT TO BE COMPENSATED FOR THE RISK OF LOSS OF LIFE IF I DRIVE THE CAR. Can a Ford Escape tow? Towing & payload
As an SUV, the Ford Escape is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.
What sets your Escape's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
