How to read a Ford Expedition VIN — every digit explained

Every Ford Expedition carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Expedition.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Expedition VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

1997 Ford Expedition recalls 9

Power Train:automatic Transmission:gear Position Indication (prndl)97V171000

What's wrong. Vehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and multi-purpose passenger vehicles. If the automatic transmission shift cable assembly was not fully attached to the steering column bracket, the shift cable assembly can come out of the bracket. The vehicle operator would then not be able to shift the transmission from one of the drive gear positions into the park position even though the gear shift selector would indicate "park."

Risk. The condition would not allow a disengagement of the transmission from the park position or affect proper neutral start switch operation. Unintended vehicle movement could occur if the parking brake was not set.

Fix. Dealers will make the proper attachment of the transmission shift control cable to the steering column bracket and add a tie strap to that connection.

Wheels:lugs/nuts/bolts/studs98V095000

What's wrong. Vehicle description: multi-purpose vehicles and light duty pickup trucks. The lug nuts on these vehicles may not create sufficient clamp load allowing wheel movement in relation to the hub/rotor mounting surface.

Risk. This can result in the loosening of lug nuts, stud fatigue failure, and the potential for a wheel separation from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Fix. Owners of these vehicles will be receiving two notifications. The first notification, which began in may 1998, will provide an interim repair procedure until parts become available. This interim procedure can be completed by owners or their dealers. It specifies that the lug nut torque must be verified to be 100 lbs. Then the lug nuts need to be tightened an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn more. There will be a second owner notification, which is expected to begin july 20, 1998, under which dealers will inspect the wheel studs and replace the wheel lug nuts.

Suspension:rear96V252000

What's wrong. The rear axle track bar bracket can separate from the frame due to missing welds or inadequate weld penetration.

Risk. If both brackets separate, the rear axle can move laterally until the tires contact either the frame or the wheelhouse resulting in either tire damage or a significant reduction in vehicle handling performance.

Fix. Dealers will install a track bar bracket reinforcement kit and inspection of the axle tubes. The suspect axle tubes do not have a stamped date code on the tube. Axles without date codes on the tubes will be replaced.

Steering:gear Box:shaft Sector03V196000

What's wrong. On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, if the intermediate shaft yoke separates from the steering gear input shaft, the steering system becomes disconnected.

Risk. This could result in loss of steering control, potentially resulting in a vehicle crash without warning.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the steering intermediate shaft yoke to determine if the yoke is fully seated on the steering gear input shaft. If the yoke is fully seated no service is required. If the yoke is not fully seated and bolt groove and spline is visible, the intermediate shaft and bolt will be replaced as well as the bolt at the steering column connection. Owner notification began on may 30, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Trailer Hitches00V073000

What's wrong. Vehicle description: multi-purpose vehicles. The trailer hitch assembly to the frame attaching bolts could lose the clamp load.

Risk. The trailer hitch could then separate from the vehicle.

Fix. Dealers will replace the trailer hitch mounting bolts and nut plates.

Exterior Lighting06E060000

What's wrong. Certain aai motorsports combination lamps sold as replacement lamps for use on the above list passenger vehicles. Combination lamps not equipped with amber side reflectors fail to conform with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."

Risk. Lack of amber side reflectors in the lamps will decrease lighting visibility to other drivers and may possibly result in a vehicle crash

Fix. Aai motorsports will notify owners and replace the lamps free of charge. The recall began on august 1, 2006. Owners may contact aai motorsports at 909-923-9188.

Exterior Lighting00V168000

What's wrong. Vehicle description: mini vans, light pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles. Off lease canadian vehicles equipped with daytime running lights which meet canadian requirements and not the photometric requirements of fmvss 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment." according to ford, the vehicles were imported into the u.s. Erroneously.

Risk. The light given off from the daytime running lights is brighter than allowed by u.s. Standards.

Fix. Dealers will be advised to deactivate the running light function and to complete any outstanding safety recalls on these vehicles.

Vehicle Speed Control05V388000

What's wrong. On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles equipped with speed control, the speed control deactivation switch may overheat, smoke, or burn.

Risk. A fire at the switch could occur.

Fix. By letter dated september 12, 2005, owners were instructed to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the speed control deactivation switch disconnected. Owners who have had their speed control deactivated are being notified that parts will be available and advised to make an appointment to reconnect the speed control beginning in february 2006. 2021 Expedition

Daily the automatic transmission will erratically and forcefully downshift at highway speed. When changing Driving Modes the transmission display on the dash has numbers disappear and the transmission downshifts with great force which has lead to injuries. After sitting for more than a few hours the transmission will not go into reverse at first but will then violently shift into reverse after several minutes. These issues began not long after we purchased this vehicle new. The service manager at the dealership the vehicle was purchased from when I told him about these problems told me that I don’t understand how a 10 speed transmission works. Sometimes the driver’s seatbelt will not buckle.

2016 Expedition

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. While parked in her friend's driveway with her child in her car seat, the contact heard an abnormal, popping sound as she was outside of the vehicle. The vehicle began to roll back without warning with her child inside the vehicle; she attempted to hit the emergency brake but was unsuccessful. The vehicle continued to roll backward into a neighbor's fence before the vehicle came to a halt. The contact's daughter was safe inside the car seat and did not sustain any injuries; however, the contact sustained mental trauma as a result of the failure. A police report was filed due to the neighbor's damaged fence. The vehicle had yet to be diagnosed or repaired for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was given a case number; she was then referred to NHTSA for additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 100,200.

2002 Expedition

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford expedition. While attempting to park the vehicle, it accelerated to a high rate of speed and crashed into a wall. None of the air bags deployed. The contact was injured and the insurance company recommended that the dealer service the vehicle. The vehicle was at the dealer for 32 days while the repairs were made. The failure and current mileages were 31000.

1999 Expedition

On the 5/21/01 accident i was making a left turn off of my cul a sac st and just as i turned the wheel to go left vehicle locked up to the right and i cound not get in to unlock which caused me to hit a parked car, i bounced off the car 3 times before my truck rolloed back and stopped.the police officer tried to turn the wheels with the truck on and was unable to do so, all fluids released from the truck. I was injured in my back/neck/spine, and burn marks on my rt hand from trying to turn the wheel to avoid hitting the car. This accident happened within 15 ft.on the police report it states that the power steering locked up but due to no witnesses he can't prove this. Bodyshop said the gear box and all the gears are destroyed and because of it locking up to the right when i was making a left it looks like the power steering locked up also. Ford will not comment on my situation and i want to know what to do to protect myself if this is a defect problem. On the transmission, i took it to ford and told them my truck was slipping and having problems and they replaced the transmission and fixed some engine problems. I have so many things go wrong on this vehicle since 1999 i'm afraid to even drive it once it is fixed. I"m not sure it is safe for me and my family. Please advise me if you can or let me know what your process is on this complaint. *ak

2023 Expedition

I crunk my 2023 Ford Expedition up yesterday so the AC would run and it wouldn’t be so hot. I pressed the break, and the start button and simply crunk it up, I then got the keys out of the vehicle so I could unlock my house. When I walked back outside My truck had rolled backwards and hit my house. The vehicle was in park. Now I have to fix my house and my truck and all of this is something that should have never happened and is extremely scary and dangerous. Thankfully I got into my house before it hit it because I may not have been so lucky considering my vehicle was to my back and could’ve easily rolled over me if it had started rolling sooner than it did.

While towing a rented trailer from Tractor Supply, the trailer detached because it was not properly secured by store staff. The trailer struck the rear bumper of my 2021 Ford Expedition, causing visible body damage and raising concerns about hidden damage to the drivetrain and transmission due to the sudden force of the impact. After the incident, the vehicle was taken to a Ford dealership for inspection. Documentation exists showing that additional drivetrain and transmission evaluation is needed to determine the full extent of damage. The rear-view camera is also under active NHTSA recall (25V048), and its poor image quality complicates safe reversing after the incident. The safety risk is significant: the trailer detachment created a roadway hazard and impact, while the rear camera defect reduces visibility and increases crash risk when backing. The vehicle has been inspected by a Ford dealership and is being reviewed under an insurance claim with Tractor Supply’s insurer. Full documentation of the service visit and inspection is available upon request.

The contact owns a 2021 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that as his wife had attempted to park the vehicle, she placed the gear shifter into park(P) and let her foot off the brake pedal. Once she released her foot off the brake, the vehicle abruptly accelerated forward and hit a storage shed. The contact depressed the brake pedal multiple times during the failure but the brakes failed to engage. No warning lights appeared on the instrument panel during the failure. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The police were not called and no medical assistance was needed. The storage shed was destroyed as a result of the impact. The contact called the dealer and made an appointment for a diagnostic. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

Transmission slams into gear, lacks power, has put itself into park at 55mph. Was replaced by Ford and 1,400 miles later it blew up. 2.5 hours into a 9 hour road trip the transmission started leaking and hitting the exhaust pipe and caused the fluid to flare as it hit the hot exhaust. Vehicle filled with caustic smoke and odor. Put my family (with small children) in a very dangerous situation on interstate 64 on the side of Afton Mountain. Out of the 6 months I have owned this vehicle it has been at the Ford dealership 4.5 months while they try to figure it out. Spoke to Ford Corporate the next business day and they put in a request for the Ford Buy Back as it has been in the shop so many times for the same issue.

The contact's husband owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at 65-70 MPH on cruise control, the vehicle inadvertently downshifted, skipped a gear, and lurched forward several times. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle would skip from 3rd gear to 5th gear whenever she would depress the accelerator pedal. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however, upon picking up the vehicle from the dealer and driving home, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle inadvertently decelerated instead. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact also stated that the RPM of the vehicle was jumping between 2,000 and 3,000 RPM. The contact continued to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who test drove the vehicle but was unable to diagnose it. The dealer reset the adaptive learning of the vehicle; however, the failure persisted, and the vehicle would make abnormal clunking sounds while shifting into drive. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred increasingly and significantly while driving. Additionally, the driver’s side rear brake had an abnormally strong burning odor. The vehicle was taken to Lebanon Ford (770 Columbus Ave, Lebanon, OH 45036) who was unable to duplicate the failure. The dealer notified the manufacturer of the failure. The manufacturer's field technician advised the dealer to replace the brake light sensors. The contact stated that the brake light sensors were replaced; however, upon picking up the vehicle, the start button was depressed but the vehicle failed to start. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered a buy back. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 7,400.

Air conditioner stopped working; we pulled to side of street and shut engine off. Restarted engine and smoke started coming out of air conditioner vent on passenger side then out of front dash. Shut engine off again and called AAA for tow truck. Tow truck came about an hour and a half later. Tow truck driver turned ignition key to put car in neutral and began pulling it up onto flat bed. Smoke started coming from front area of dash and out through vents at bottom of windshield. Tow truck driver rolled car back down onto street. Smoke got extremely thick. My husband opened front passenger door and saw fire in the floor under the glove box. He tried to pick up this piece of equipment to throw it out of the car thinking it would save the rest of the vehicle, and this is how he got burned fingers. The fire quickly started spreading and we tried to get some belongings out of car while tow truck driver called 911. Fire Department came and put out fire. Vehicle was totally burned up. There were no warnings of any kind before the incident. Husband had third degree burns on fingers of right hand. If we hadn't been stopped and engine shut off, we possibly could have been killed because the vehicle was totally engulfed in flames within three minutes after fire began.

My 2016 ford expedition el ltd v-6 3.5l with 354 odometer miles produced 4 minor prelude engine surges within a couple hours on the roadways before it went full throttle 5 times within a couple minutes. It suddenly, and without warning, ran down my wife after squishing her against the garage-bedroom wall (which was destroyed) in reverse, placed me in traffic danger when it raced out of the driveway, placed a witness driving in the street in danger as it backed up, and while turning into my driveway forward, plowed half its length into a neighbors house, and destroyed most of its exterior as a result of the forward and reverse collisions. The brakes were absolutely useless and could not begin to overpower the individual engine full power surges. The air bags never deployed despite the frontal impact exceeding 15 mph. The full throttle engine surge durations approximated 6 seconds each; and, the temporary returns to idle lasted 2-4 seconds. My wife is quite injured; but, could easily have been killed. I was planning a head-on large oak tree ramming to stop the vehicle once-and-for-all. Other people and ford need to be advised of this potential death trap situation. Please help.

On May 16, 2026, my 2023 Ford Expedition with 6,197 miles caught fire while I was driving home from work. I smelled smoke inside the cabin, and within moments smoke began coming through the air vents. I pulled over and exited the vehicle. When I got out, I saw the engine compartment was on fire and heavy smoke was coming from under the hood. As I moved away from the vehicle, there were multiple loud pops and bangs coming from the engine area. Police and fire crews responded and extinguished the fire, but the vehicle is a total loss. This was a nearly new vehicle with very low mileage. I believe this was caused by a manufacturing defect. Ford previously settled a class‑action lawsuit involving 2021 Expeditions with engine fire issues, which suggests this problem has not been fully resolved. I am reporting this incident because it is a serious safety hazard and could have resulted in injury or death.

I took my vehicle to the dealership to have all recall work done on Feb. 11th 2026. I was told i am up to date on all my recall work at that time. When I received my vehicle back It would intermittently just shut down for no apparent reason while sitting at stop lights, or just stopped in that fashion. I called and the dealership they said unless they could recreate the issue somewhat easily there was noting they could really do. So while parked in driveway the vehicle again had no power, I used my emergency key to get into vehicle and opened the hood to which I found the battery terminal connections were never tighten. I could take them off by hand. This told me the mechanic at the dealership didn't complete job and tighten my battery connections, Fast forward to April 18th, it was raining, I parked vehicle, still running, went into post office ( I was only gone for 30 seconds)and I came out to white smoke billowing out from under the hood. I opened hood the large flames shooting up. I quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher I had in the car and put 90% of the fire out, it was still burning at the fuse junction box, moments later a police officer showed up with fire extinguisher and was able to put it out. The car would not stop running, so once the fire dept. arrived they had to cut the battery terminals to shut the vehicle down. This was also the first time I drove vehicle in the rain since my recall work was done. The fire dept. and I realized the fuse box cover was not in place. So now this same mechanic that did't tighten battery terminals was also neglectful in not replacing the fuse box cover. I believe this neglect partially if not wholly caused this fire. It is highly probable that water got into the fuse box and shortened everything out which caused the fire. I have a document from the dealership that states they did the recall work for 22S36 - Underhood fires. But this website says this work was not performed. No inspection from anyone has been done

Vehicle caught fire on February 29, 2024, with family members inside the vehicle. The fire appeared to start under the hood on the right passenger side, which would directly correlate with the current open recall. The family had just made a trip back from a basketball game and was dropping off a passenger when smoke was noticed. Upon further inspection, there was an active fire under the hood, which soon erupted into a burst of flames, causing the vehicle to be declared a total loss. Emergency responders had to be called to the scene to alleviate the fire. The fire report depicts a vehicle malfunction as the cause of the ignition. Ford has made no efforts to contact the consumer regarding the fire and subsequent damage.

Vehicle with 29,300 miles. Lightly driven, well maintained, inspected, tires checked & oil changed march of 2006. Borrowed my mom's expedition. (big mistake), leaving the houston area headed for saint louis we got about 200+ miles before the tread came off. Tomball ford, ford company & continental / general grabber tires changed our lives. Headed in bound in the right or center lane a grassy steep median seperated the south bound traffic. Felt a small bump so i took my foot off the accelerator to slow down & lightly braked to pull over to the right, i didn't have a chance to hit the brake when the right rear passenger tire tread came off, tried maintaining a straight direction to slow the vehicle down, but being so top heavy no matter how hard i tried it shot toward the median leaning to the passenger side where my teenage son was. Thank god he partially laid back his seat & seat belt on. When it rolled on the passenger side, from this point i am told (we both hit our heads & were unconcious) suv shot out of the median upside down onto another car we contined to roll across the s-bound lanes & came to a stop facing east. Airbags didn't delploy, all windows were busted out(xcpt 2), driver door is the only door that opened. My son & i are thankful, i received staples to the back of my head, i have to have an mri on my head & neck, son has to have his shoulder & hip checked. Drivers seat broke loose, entire dash was destroyed. People in the other car were visiting from another country (i'm filled with sorrow & a lot of counseling ahead of me) their families are in my prayers & thoughts daily, two of the people in the other car passed away upon impact. I didn't know another car was involved. An er lady was talking about the wreck, mentioned 2 people died. I was thinkng no we didn't we are right here. I got the medic there to give me the details. My wife had a tire blowout on our 2002 ford expedition . Tires mounted on the vehicle were the general aw grabbers 17inch. We were informed last year a couple of months after vehicle was purchased that these tires had been recalled. We contacted dealership and took our vechicle in to another local dealership, and they said no they had not been recalled even after we insisted they at least look at the tires. My wife and infant child were in the vechicle which caused extensive damage to the car but thankfully only minor bumps and bruises to my family. We are in the process of getting legal advice and have taken numerous pictures of the tire and had our own tech examine the tire.*ak

Events leading up to failure: (1) started with fog light switch not working. (3) took it in for service and was told the windshield was leaking and shorted the switch. Service attempted to correct leak by leaving windshield in place and providing more sealant. (1) leak in windshield discovered to persist after battery drained due to radio and various electrical functions would continue even without the key in the ignition. Most recently, the starter would repeatedly attempt to start the engine randomly after the engine was started and even while the key was out of the ignition! (2) with this uncontrolled electrical activity battery drain was causing stranding and the most recent occurrence the smell of an electrical fire was noted. (3) the car was taken immediately to a ford dealership for service, where currently the gem module and fuse box are getting replaced as well as the windshield to fix the leak - i was told that the original windshield cannot be re-sealed as it will break when removed. I don't have vin with me at this very moment, but can submit it later. What does oem mean next to the defective elements i've listed? *nm

The contact owns a 2024 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, there was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the roof of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who determined that the panoramic sunroof brackets had fractured and needed to be replaced. The brackets were replaced; however, the failure later reoccurred. The contact was informed by the local dealer that the sunroof glass was too heavy for the brackets used to secure the sunroof. The contact was concerned that once the vehicle was repaired, the failure would likely recur. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 10,000.

My vehicle was involved in an accident while coming into a cub to get onto the freeway the vehicle in front of me made a sudden stop in an emergency panic i hit my brakes and my expedition never attempted to stop. As i explained to two of officers on the scene i was standing on my brakes and it would not stop. The following business day i was given information from my insurance company there was a rash of problems with the brakes on this particular model. Following the repairs the dealership kept my vehicle for 3 weeks trying to figure out what happened to my brake and discovered from the computer there was a problem prior to me having the accident. The day i went to pick it up after three weeks in the shop for brakes alone again i was put into my fourth rental vehicle because the truck never left the shop. Today my brakes still will not stop properly and to top it off after giving ford a copy of the recall for the brakes, sensors, and transmission by the way of which the dealership has supposedly adjusted prior to the accident i still got stuck with the repair bills. I talked with a certified ford brake specialist the day i got my vehicle from the shop and explained what happened, what the dealership said and did as well as my brakes still go to floor but not to my surprise he told me it was not right and needed to go back because the vehicle still in not safe to drive but the dealership insist these brake are suppose to be soft and squishy as the shop foreman told me. There is a serious problem with this vehicle and unfortunately it is my only mode of transportation and i can't afford to trade it or get another at this time but serious safety issues do exist. *tr

I actually have already sent in an assessment for airbag, but then read the recall on brakes, which at the time, because a new vehicle, I didn’t think possible. Even when pushing on my brakes, my vehicle was not slowing down like it should have, and I had a front end collision. It was hard for me to think this was because of brakes because new, but I do think they need to be examined.

2024 Expedition

I was in a car accident on June 12, 2025, and my steering wheel airbag did not deploy correctly or function correctly. It was a front in straightforward collision. I did not have warning signs so my brakes could have been an issue because I was paying attention and unable to avoid an accident going under the speed limit. The rear cross traffic. Warning stays on pretty consistently because we live down a dirt road, and every time it rains, it again comes back on. I do not believe I heard the forward collision detection go off either. When I hit the back of a work convoy truck straight on, My steering wheel airbag did not deploy correctly. It did come out it never inflated. It did not protect me. I do not have any broken bones, but I do have a hematoma right beside my under arm, and a great deal of bruising.

2020 Expedition

Driving on a 4-lane highway when a box truck directly ahead stopped quickly due to a stopped car ahead of it. The forward collision warning flashed and beeped, but when forcefully applying the brakes, the brake pedal only pulsed (like anti-lock brakes) but didn't slow the car even enough for the driver or passenger to feel any inertia moving forward in their seats or with their heads. The automatic emergency braking also didn't work, leading to a rear-end collision forceful enough to push the box truck into the car in front of it, apparently injuring the driver of the front car who was transferred by emergency personnel to a nearby hospital to seek medical evaluation/assistance. After impact, a message appeared on the dash stating "Pre-collision assist not available", but the forward collision warning worked, there was no prior warning of issues for the pre-collision assist, and the warning message was after impact, which significantly damaged the front portions of the vehicle (estimated damages exceed $24,000). There was a recall for the same model and year of this vehicle for pre-collision assist features/software not working properly, but it either didn't apply to this specific vehicle or was already addressed by the dealer, and the details aren't quite the same as what was experienced in this collision.

Was hit by a vehicle while making a left hand turn on a city street. Tried to stop the car. Breaks would not work and just went to the floor board. Vehicle sped up. Jumped 2 curbs and had to throw the car in park in order to stop. Air bags did not deploy.

2016 Expedition

2005 Expedition

I had just picked up my son from his school and made a left turn at the stop sign to go to the main road to pick my daughter from her school when the brakes failed in my truck. The red was ahead, cars were lined, kids were crossing the road, and i had to something really fast. I drove in to a driveway in my right which was a parking for a hospital. I kept trying to push the brake pedal to stop the car,but the wouldn't stop. It went over the curb and hit a tree. I called the police, then my insurance, car was towed to the body shop. The ford store did the diagnostics on the brake and told my insurance company that the brake booster had failed.my insurance company got the work started for the body damage. I called the ford store several times asking for a copy of the diagnostic and the person in charge would not return my call or give me a copy.three weeks later when body started they sent a report to the body shop that the cause of the accident, was undetermined sent this report after he spoke to the office of the general counsel of ford. The accident occurred at 3:15 on sept.17th and my car went through a 60,000 mile check up on sept.16th. At the ford store. *tr

Can a Ford Expedition tow? Towing & payload

As an SUV, the Ford Expedition is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package, on a curb weight near 5,668 lb.

What sets your Expedition's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
