TRUCK WAS DRIVEN THEN PARKED, 15 MINUTES LATER WHILE MOWING THE GRASS, I LOOKED OVER AT THE PARKED TRUCKAND IT WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE STARTED AT THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND IT WAS A TOTAL LOSS.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EQUIPPED WITH A DUAL FUEL TANK AND WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE EMITTED INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THE FUEL RETURN CHECK VALVE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE FUEL FROM THE REAR FUEL TANK OVERFLOWED INTO THE SECOND FUEL TANK. IN ADDITION, FUEL HAD SEEPED OUT OF THE FUEL TANK CAP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. GASOLINE IS LEAKING OUT OF THE FRONT FUEL CAP OF MY 1996 FORD F-150 TRUCK. MY TRUCK HAS DUAL TANKS. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE A FIRE OR EXPLOSION. MY RESEARCH ONLINE FOUND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 91V146000. THIS IS THE PROBLEM MY TRUCK IS HAVING BUT IT IS NOT CURRENTLY COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. I AM WRITING THIS SUNDAY EVENING SO I AM WAITING TILL MORNING TO CONTACT FORD AND REPORT THIS PROBLEM TO THEM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH THE FUEL TANK DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. APPROXIMATELY 3 GALLONS OF FUEL SPILLED OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED HIM THAT BOTH STRAPS WERE SEVERELY COVERED WITH RUST AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE FUEL TANK. BOTH STRAPS AND THE FUEL TANK WERE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED REGARDING THE FAILURE AND STATED HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 122,700.

The contact stated that while parked in the driveway, she observed fire between the finder and the hood. The heat from the fire rippled the front of the garage causing property damage. The vehicle was not diagnosed and the origin of the fire was not determined. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. The vehicle was towed to an unknown impound lot. It was unknown if a police report or fire department report was filed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

1996 FORD F150 4 X 4-BOTH REAR BRACKETS CONNECTING THE LEAF SPRINGS (REAR OF VEHICLE) TO THE FRAME WERE TERRIBLE CORRODED AND CRACKED. MECHANIC WAS FEARFUL OF FAILURE WITHIN A MONTH OR TWO. REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FROM A FORD DEALERSHIP. CALLED LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WAS ASSURED PARTS AVAILABLE. UPON ARRIVAL AT THE DEALERSHIP, NOT ALL PARTS AVAILABLE AS DEMAND HAD BEEN SO GREAT THEY KEPT RUNNING OUT OF THE PARTS. I HAD TO GO TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP TO OBTAIN THE REST OF THE PARTS. THE REPLACEMENT PARTS WERE OF SIGNIFICANTLY HEAVIER BUILD THAN ORIGINAL PARTS. HAVE SINCE BEEN INFORMED BY MY MECHANIC AND OTHERS THAT MID 90S FORD 150S AND EXPLORERS ARE LOSING THE BRACKETS EN MASSE. I CONSIDER THIS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE AS AN IMPORTANT CHASIS COMPONENT IS MORE THAN LIKELY TO FAIL. THESE OLDER TRUCKS ARE NOW BEING HANDED DOWN TO HIGH SCHOOL KIDS. A FAILURE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WILL SURELY LEAD TO INEXPERIENCED DRIVERS PANICKING AND OVER CORRECTING AT THE TIME OF FAILURE. OCT 4, 2005-DURING ANNUAL STATE SAFETY INSPECTION, THE INSPECTOR DISCOVEREWD THAT BOTH FRONT COIL SPRINGS WERE BROKEN. THE BREAKS WERE APROXIMATELY 90 FROM THE TOP END OF EACH COIL, LEAVING THEM UNATTACHED. THE BROKEN ENDS WERE RUSTY, SO THEY HAD BEEJN IN THIS CONDITION FOR SOME TIME. I HAVE TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES TO REPLACE MY DOOR HANDLES FROM THE INSIDE OF MY TRUCK. I OWN A 1996 FORD F150 4X4. THE TRUCK HAS NOT BEEN USED FOR ANY TYPE OF COMMERCIAL DUTIES THAT I'M AWARE OF AND THE VEHICLE SHOWS NO SIGNS OF ABUSE. I HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2004 IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. RECENTLY I NOTICED THE LEFT REAR CORNER OF THE BED HAD DROPPED APPROXIMATELY 3/4" WHICH HAS INCREASED TO OVER AN INCH. FURTHER EXAMINATION REVEALED THAT THE REAR SPRING SUPPORT BRACKET HAD ROTTED THROUGH. THE SPRING IS PRESENTLY SUPPORTED BY THE TRUCK BED. I HAVE INSPECTED THE REMAINING REAR SPRING SUPPORTS AND THEY ARE ALL IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. APPARENTLY THE MATERIALS FORD IS USING TO MANUFACTURE THESE COMPONENTS IS NOT UP TO THE TASK AND THE COATING USED TO PROTECT THESE SUPPORTS ONLY MASKS THE PROBLEM UNTIL IT'S TO LATE CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I'VE OWNED A NUMBER OF FORD TRUCKS IN THE PAST WITH CONSIDERABLY MORE YEARS ON THEM THAN THIS VEHICLE AND I'VE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE THE SPRING SUPPORTS OR ANY STRUCTURAL COMPONENT. THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY TEN YEARS OF SERVICE AND STRUCTURAL PARTS SUCH AS THESE SHOULD NOT BE ROTTING AWAY. I OWN THREE OTHER FORD TRUCK PRODUCTS AND THEY ARE ALL SHOWING SIGNS CONSIDERABLE DETERIORATION (HEAVY RUST) ON CHASSIS COMPONENTS COATING PROCESS FORD IT USING ( LOOKS LIKE POWDER COATING) TO PROTECT THE COMPONENTS IS ACTUALLY MASKING THE PROBLEM UNTIL IT'S TO LATE. I'M HOPING THAT I CAN PURCHASE REPLACEMENT PARTS TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM, OTHERWISE I WILL BE FORCED TO PROCURE A USED SET FROM A AUTO RECYCLER. THESE SUPPORTS PROVIDE ATTACHMENT POINT FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION AS WELL AS MAINTAIN THE REAR AXLES ALIGNMENT WITHIN THE VEHICLE. THESE ITEMS SHOULD BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A SERVICE LIFE GREATER THAN TEN YEARS. THERE IS A CONSIDERABLE SAFETY ISSUE IN THE FACT THAT THE AVERAGE DRIVER MAY NOT REALIZE THERE IS A PROBLEM UNTIL IT'S TO LATE AND THE DRIVER LOOSES CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. *JB

THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TURNED OFF AND PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY EIGHT HOURS WHEN THE FIRE OCCURRED. HE RECIEVED A CUT THAT WENT DEEP ENOUGH TO CUT A TENDON IN HIS FOOT AND PUT ABOUT A THREE INCH GASH IN HIS FOOT. AFTER EXAMINING EVERY POSSIBLY REASON FOR HIS INJURY I LOOKED IN THE TRUCK. LOW AND BEHOLD THE SEAT FRAME ON MY TRUCK IS RAZOR SHARP AND THERE IS BLOOD ALL OVER IT. I CAN BELIEVE THIS! I HAVE HAD THIS TRUCK SINCE IT WAS NEW...THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ME, OR EVEN MY LITTLE DAUGHTER JUST BY MOVING THE WRONG WAY...IT COULD HAVE PUT A SERIOUS GASH IN ONE OF OUR FEET OR LEGS, OR EVEN WORSE A TENDON OR SOMETHING. DT: ON JUNE 22, 2005 THE CONSUMER'S FORD F 150 BEGAN SMOKING UNDER THE HOOD WHILE PARKED AND TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN SITTING FOR ABOUT 9 HOURS. THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH LOCATED ON TOP OF THE MASTER CYLINDER SHORTED OUT AND LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GETTING READY TO CATCH ON FIRE. THE SHORT MELTED THE PLASTIC RESERVIOR THAT HOLDS THE BRAKE FLUID TO THE POINT WHERE IT ALMOST BURNED THROUGH. THE OWNER REMOVED THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TO STOP THE BURNING. THAT CONNECTOR WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. THE PART COOLED OFF AND THE OWNERS TAPED UP THE CONNECTOR SO IT WOULD NOT MAKE ANY CONNECTION WITH ANY METAL PARTS. THE OWNERS STATES THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON. THIS HAD BEEN A PROBLEM FOR ABOUT A YEAR. THE DEALERSHIP WOULD TURN OFF THE LIGHT OFF AND TELL THE OWNER THAT THE VEHICLE CHECKED OUT ALRIGHT ON THEIR COMPUTER. THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. THEY THOUGHT IT WAS AN OXYGEN SENSOR. THERE WAS NO FIRE OR POLICE REPORT MADE. THE OWNER TOOK PICTURES OF THE PART FOR HIS RECORDS. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN NOTIFIED AND THEY GAVE HIM A FORM LETTER TO CALL THE PHONE NUMBERS ON THE LIST. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED ALSO. THEY SAID THEY WOULD REVIEW THE INFORMATION, AND SENT THE OWNER A LETTER IN THE MAIL. I am unsure of what happened. This truck was sitting in my driveway and caught fire. While on fire it kept trying to start even though no one was in it and the keys were no where near it. The fire truck was called out due to the trucks proximity to the home and the fire was put out. There has not been any insoection done on the vehicle since it is burnt to a crisp.

The contact owns a 1996 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle started to shutoff and restart independently. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic. The mechanic informed the contact that the rear tank’s fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that there was no open recall associated with the VIN for the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000. The contact stated there is an issue with the front fuel tank feeding fuel into the rear tank when the rear tank pump is not operational and having to switch the fuel supply over to the front tank. When the rear tank is full from the front tank feed, it spills over out of the rear tank fill spout, and runs out on the ground.

DT: 1996 FORD F150 XLT PICK UP TRUCK. THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY AND THE SHAFT ON THE DRIVER SIDE IN THE BACK SLID OUT. THE TRUCK WAS BEING DRIVEN ON A SIDE ROAD ABOUT 35 -40 MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE MECHANIC TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT THESE VEHICLES WERE DESIGNED TO FAIL. IT WAS REPAIRED AT THE COST OF $1300.00. ALSO, WHILE TRYING TO BACK OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY THE SHIFTER WAS FLOPPING AROUND AND A BOLT FELL OUT AT THE CONSUMER'S FEET. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO ANY GEAR. THE BOLT FELL OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN WHERE THE TWO HALVES MEET. OF THE TWO BOLTS ONE FELL OUT, AND THE OTHER WAS VERY LOOSE. THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO FIX THEM WITH A RETAINING DEVICE WITH LOCK WASHERS ON BOTH BOLTS. THE THIRD PROBLEM, WAS SIMILAR TO THE FIRST PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING SOMEONE RAN A RED LIGHT AND THE TRUCK WAS HIT ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE. THE WHEEL AND SHAFT DISENGAGED FROM THE REAR AXLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED, AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS REPLACED ON 1996 THUNDERBIRD IN 2000. IT IS NOW CRACKED, AND AFTER SPENDING 550.00 TO FIND THAT OUT, THERE IS NOTHING FORD WILL DO EVEN THOUGH IT IS ON CAMPAIGN (97M91). NOW I CAN NOT DRIVE MY CAR.

I OWN A 1992 FORD F250 AND A 96 FORD F150. BOTH HAVE DUAL TANKS.ON BOTH VEHICLES THE FRONT FUEL GAUGE HAS STOPPED FUNCTIONING AND WHEN USING THE REAR TANK IT TRANFERS FUEL TO THE FRONT TANK RESULTING IN FUEL SPILLING OUT.WITH THE GUAGES NOT FUNCTIONING THERE IS NO NOTICE OF WHEN THE FRONT TANK IS OVERFILLING.THIS IS A FIRE HAZARD AS WELL AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE.I HAVE SPOKE TO THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS PERSON AT OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT A DEALER ISSUE.I HAVE INSERTED AN INCIDENT,HOWEVER THE PROBLEM IS A RECURRING PROBLEM.*AK

COPY OF EMAIL TO FORD: I WROTE TO YOU A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO REGARDING AN EXTREME LEVEL OF CORROSION OCCURRING ON MY 1996 F150 WHICH RESULTED IN THE OIL PAN RUSTING THROUGH ONLY TO BE REBUFFED. WELL NOW THE LEVEL OF CORROSION IS EVEN WORSE. THE BRAKE LINES ARE SO CORRODED THAT ONE OF THEM BURST AND NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. CLEARLY THIS IS NOT NORMAL. THIS VEHICLE IS ONLY USED FOR PERSONAL USE AND IS ONLY USED ON THE HIGHWAY FOR TRANSPORTATION. I HAVE ANOTHER VEHICLE, A JEEP, WHICH SITS NEXT TO IT THAT IS 5 YEARS OLDER THAT IS NOT EXHIBITING THE CORROSION FOUND UNDER YOUR VEHICLE. AS I MENTIONED IN MY PREVIOUS LETTER, I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND THE VEHICLES MILEAGE IS LESS THAN 60K. CLEARLY THIS VEHICLE IS DEFECTIVE BUT YOUR EARLIERRESPONSE TO ME INDICATES THAT YOU DONT CARE. THEREFORE, YOU HAVE LOST MY WIFE AND I AS CUSTOMERS AND I FEEL OBLIGATED TO TELL ANYONE I KNOW OF YOUR POOR QUALITY AND CONCERN FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS. THIS VEHICLE IS A DEATHTRAP LOOKING FOR ITS FIRST VICTIM AND I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT SELL THE VEHICLE AND SEND A COPY OF THIS LETTER TO THE NHSTA SO THAT ITS ON RECORD THAT FORD WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT.

DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THEIR HANDS ARE TIED. FORD MOTOR COMPANY ONLY "DOCUMENTS" DIFFICULTIES AND I CAN'T GET PAST A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE WHO CAN DO NOTHING BUT PUT MY COMPLAINTS INTO A DATABASE. REPEATED LETTERS AND PHONE CALLS HAVE GONE UNRESOLVED AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS MADE NO ATTEMPT AT CUSTOMER SERVICE! I WAS TOLD TODAY THAT NOTICE WOULD BE SENT TO THE LOCAL FIELD OFFICE WHERE THEY WOULD CONTACT THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER AND MOST LIKELY NOT ME DIRECTLY ALTHOUGH I ASKED THAT THEY DO SO. THERE HAVE BEEN TEN SERVICE APPOINTMENTS FOR THESE PARTS TO BE REPLACED. I NOW HAVE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT FOR AUG. 9TH - WE STILL HAVE FRONT AND REAR SUSPENSION PROBLEMS.
