The contact owns a 2001 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he heard an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment. After visual inspection, the contact was able to conclude that the sound originated from the passenger’s side exhaust manifold. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that there was a failure with the bolts securing the exhaust manifold. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred three times. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 85,000.

PULLED OUT OF SIDE ROAD ONTO MAJOR HIGHWAY AND SUDDENLY A LOUD FLAPPING NOISE FROM ENGINE WAS HEARD. IMMEDIATELY PULLED TO SHOULDER OF ROAD AND TURN VEHICLE OFF AND CALLED FOR ASSISTANCE. WAS TOLD THAT A SPARK PLUG WAS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM AND THAT IT SHOULD BE A EASY FIX, THIS WAS NOT THE CASE BECAUSE THE HEAD HAD TO BE REMOVED TO EXTRACTED TO DAMAGED PLUG. The contact owned a 2001 Ford F-150. The contact stated that he parked the vehicle on the street in front of the residence, and ten minutes later, the contact heard the horn abruptly sounding. His son looked out the window and discovered the vehicle in flames. No warning light was illuminated. The contact called 911 about the failure. There were no injuries sustained. The police and fire departments arrived on the scene, and the firefighters extinguished the fire. The fire consumed and destroyed the entire vehicle. The origin of the fire was in the engine compartment of the driver's side. Police and fire department reports were filed. The vehicle was not towed and remained at the residence. The insurance company was notified of the failure; however, pending an inspection. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL), which was associated with the VIN, and upon research, believed that the recall consequence was related to the fire. The contact stated that a bystander driving by became aware of the fire underneath the hood of the vehicle and used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire. The contact stated that failure was caused by brake fluid leaking onto a faulty brake pressor sensor switch, also called a speed control deactivation switch under the hood, and caused the switch to corrode, causing the fire. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL); The contact's husband had left the vehicle unoccupied and parked outside his workplace. The contact's husband was then contacted by his co-workers via walkie-talkie to inform him the vehicle was on fire. When the contact arrived at the scene of the fire, nine other co-workers and himself attempted to extinguish the fire with water and extinguishers however wires were burnt on the front part of the vehicle and they were unsuccessful. The Fire Department was on scene and extinguished the fire. The origin of the fire was unknown, but the fire department did state it had to do with something electric. The fire took place at [XXX] . The vehicle was consumed by the fire. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact believes the vehicle is a total loss. The vehicle was consumed by the fire. I OWN A 2001 FORD F150 LARIET OFF ROAD PICK UP TRUCK WITH A SUPERCAB. THE REAR SEATS IN THE TRUCK DO NOT HAVE ANY HEADRESTS. MY SEVEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER CONSTANTLY HITS HER HEAD ON THE REAR WINDOW BECAUSE THERE IS NO HEADREST. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT COULD HAPPEN TO HER IF MY VEHICLE WAS STRUCK FROM THE REAR WITH HER IN THAT SEAT. I CAN'T ALLOW HER TO SIT IN THE FRONT SEAT AS OF YET AND CAN'T FIND ANY HEADREST ALTERNATIVES TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THAT THIS WAS A POOR DESIGN BY FORD AND I THINK THEY KNOW IT TOO SINCE ALL OF THE NEWER MODELS HAVE REAR HEADRESTS. I NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT IT UNTIL AFTER I PURCHASED THE TRUCK. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the front passenger’s seat belt loosened independently, and the front driver’s side seat belt occasionally loosened independently. The local dealer informed the contact that parts for recall repairs were not on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. Whoever tested our seatbelts on this vehicle years ago at the Ford dealership in Florence, Alabama did not do a good test. When me or my husband are driving the driver side seatbelt will release and we have to pull over to fasten it back again. It will do this several times while driving, which is a safety hazard. It has to be a defect in the connection of the seatbelt. The one on the passenger side works and have not had any problems with it coming undone. It is only the one on the driver's side that wants to come undone while driving. We will put it on and tug on it and it stays but when driving it will not stay fastened long. When they did the test at the Ford dealer in Florence, Alabama many years ago, all they did was fasten it without sitting in the seat and tug on it a few times and said it passed. We then moved to Texas in November of 2001 and on the way there it started releasing going down the road. Since the seatbelt was tested back then we were not sure if we could get it tested again for that purpose. Is there anything we can do to get this fixed even though we had it tested already once before?

MY VEHICLE HAS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. I PULLED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND SHIFTED INTO DRIVE AND THE GEAR SHIFTER WENT "FLOPPY," BECAME EXCESSIVELY LOOSE AND WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO ANY OTHER GEAR POSITION. I HAD TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND SET THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN PLACE RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. IT TURNS OUT TWO 27MM TORX BOLTS HAD COME LOOSE ON THE STEERING COLUMN SHIFTER ASSEMBLY INSIDE THE DASHBOARD (A NUT HOLDING ONE OF THE BOLTS HAD ACTUALLY BROKEN INTO TWO PIECES). SEE ATTACHED PICTURES. AS I RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM, I LEARNED THAT HUNDREDS, PERHAPS THOUSANDS HAD REPORTED THE SAME ISSUE (THAT AND BUSHINGS BREAKING OR SLIPPING OUT ON THE STEERING COLUMN CAUSING A SIMILAR ISSUE), ON F-150'S, F-250'S, F-350'S, WINDSTAR VANS, AND OTHER FORD VEHICLES. THIS HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BE A TRAGIC PROBLEM. C'MON, FORD, TAKE SOME OWNERSHIP AND DO RIGHT BY YOUR CUSTOMERS HERE--FIX THIS PROBLEM UNDER RECALL!

IN 2006 I WAS IN A REAR END COLLISION WHERE I WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND AND FORCED INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AND WE WERE FORCED INTO A THIRD VEHICLE IN FRONT OF US. IT RESULTED IN SEVERAL PEOPLE BEING SENT TO THE HOSPITAL WITH SERIOUS INJURIES. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF TWO VEHICLES AND MY AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY! I HAD A BROKEN RIB FROM THE STEERING WHEEL AND SEVERE WHIPLASH RESULTING IN A SURGERY THAT LEFT ME IN SERIOUS LIFE LONG PAIN. THE VEHICLE HIT ME FROM BEHIND AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AS I WAS AT A STOP IN A ON THE HIGHWAY. THE IMPACT FORCED ME INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME BUT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE ESTIMATED SPEED OF THE VEHICLE THAT HIT ME FROM BEHIND WAS BETWEEN 65 AND 75 MPH.

ALTHOUGH THIS VEHICLE IS 11 YEARS OLD, IT ONLY HAS 58,867 ORIGINAL, DOCUMENTED MILES, AND HAS NOT BEEN EXPOSED TO EXCESS ROAD SALT (MID-ATLANTIC REGION). I HAVE A 2001 FORD F-150 THAT I WAS USING TO DROP MY SON OFF AT HIS FRIEND'S HOUSE. DRIVING ON THE OFF RAMP ON I 75 NEAR ROSCOMMON, MI., STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP, NO MOVEMENT WHAT SO EVER. CORRECTION REQUIRED SNAPPY, JERKY YANKS ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO REGAIN CONTROL. WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL BROKE LOOSE, VEHICLE STARTED FISH-TAILING BECAUSE OF SNOW COVERED ROAD. CONTROL WAS REGAINED BUT HEART RATE WAS GREATLY INCREASED BY BOTH MYSELF AND WIFE. UPON TURNING MY DIRECTIONAL ON TO MAKE THE LEFT HAND TURN IT HESSITATED TO COME ON WHILE THE DIRECTIONAL STILL STAYED DOWN TO GO LEFT. AFTER ABOUT 10 SECONDS THE DIRECTIONAL CAME ON AND SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN AS WELL AS A STREAM OF SMOKE OUT OF THE HAZARD LIGHTS BUTTON ON THE STEERING COLUMN. I SHUT THE DIRECTIONAL OFF AND THE SMOKE STOPPED AND CLEARED AWAY. I PROCEEDED TO MY DESTINATION WHICH WAS ABOUT 100 YARDS AWAY NOT USING THE DIRECTIONAL AGAIN. I CALLED MY DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM AND THEY SAID IT SOUNDED LIKE THE "TURN SIGNAL SWITCH FRIED." BEING THAT THE DEALERSHIP WAS ONLY ABOUT 20 YARDS AWAY THEY CAME AND PICKED MY VEHICLE UP GIVING ME A LOANER VEHICLE TO USE. THEY TOLD ME THE PART HAD TO BE ORDERED AND THAT IT WAS GOING TO COST ABOUT $120.00 FOR THE PART AND LABOR. I HUNG UP WITH THEM AND WAS NOT HAPPY. I CALLED OUR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND ASKED THAT THE TRUCK BE TOWED AS WE WANTED TO KNOW WHY IT WAS BLOWING THE FUSE EACH TIME WE REPLACED IT. THIS TIME IT WAS THE #15 FUSE(STILL A 5 AMP FUSE) AND THIS TIME THE TRUCK WOULD CRANK BUT WOULD NOT GO OUT OF PARK. CALLED A TOW TRUCK AGAIN AND HAD IT TAKEN TO A DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOP THAT NIGHT. I SPOKE WITH THE REPAIR SHOP OWNER ON SAT JULY 1 AND TOLD HIM IT WAS A SECONDARY VEHICLE AND AS THIS WAS A HOLIDAY WEEKEND NOT TO RUSH. JUST WHEN THEY OPENED BACK UP AFTER THE HOLIDAY IF HE COULD GET IT FIXED THEN. ON THE MORNING OF JULY 4TH 2006 WE WERE CALLED AROUND 10:30 AM BY THE REPAIR SHOP OWNER, WHO WAS ALSO A TENANT IN THIS BUILDING, THAT OUR TRUCK HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE DURING THE NIGHT AND WAS A TOTAL LOSS. HE ASKED THAT WE COME RIGHT OVER. WE CALLED OUR INSURANCE ON THE WAY AS WE LUCKILY STILL HAD FULL COVERAGE EVEN THOUGH OUR TRUCK WAS PAID FOR. THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP HAD ALL THE BAY DOORS CUT OPEN BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DURING THE NIGHT(JULY 3RD) AND THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER CARS IN THE BUILDING THAT WERE DAMAGED ALSO. AT LEAST ONE OF WHICH WAS A TOTAL LOSS ALSO. THE BUILDING HAD WATER AND SMOKE DAMAGE EVEN IN ITS RESTROOM. THE REPAIR SHOP HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO OPEN ALL WEEK AND WHO KNOWS HOW LARGE HIS DEDUCTIBLE, ETC IS. I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT MY FORD 2003 EXCURSION HAS A FIRE RECALL ON IT. I AM TERRIFIED TO HAVE MY CHILDREN IN IT OR HAVE IT NEAR MY HOME OR SOMEONE ELSE'S AS I DON'T WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I HAVE ALSO FOUND OUT THAT IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD OF 26 HOUSES. THE WEIGHTS OF ALL OF OUR VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RECORDED AND FALL BELOW THE MANUFACTURERS GVWR. PER A TIRE COMPANY'S RECOMMENDATION, WE HAVE ISSUED A MANDATE THAT ALL SIMILAR VEHICLES HAVE THEIR WHEELS RE-TORQUED, TO MEET THE MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS AFTER DRIVING, AFTER TRAVELING 50 MILES FOLLOWING ANY WORK DONE ON THE WHEELS. WE HAVE HAD THE WHEELS ON VEHICLE THAT DID NOT COME OFF INSPECTED AND CHECKED TO PROPER TORQUE FOLLOWING ALL INCIDENTS AND THEY HAVE BEEN TORQUED APPROPRIATELY. THE INCIDENT DATES WERE, 12/29/07 ,02/15/08, AND 07/17/08 . ON 12/29/07 AN EMPLOYEE WAS DRIVING UP A ROAD AT APPROXIMATELY 20 M.P.H. ON 07/17/08 AN EMPLOYEE WAS DRIVING ON OREGON STATE HIGHWAY 82 AT APPROXIMATELY 55 M.P.H. WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE REAR WHEELS CAME OFF. The contact owns a 2001 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in the driveway flames were suddenly present coming from the engine compartment. The fire department was called to the scene and extinguished the flames. During the incident, the vehicle was destroyed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The contact indicated that prior to the fire the vehicle had not been driven or turned on for two days. The failure mileage was 89,000.

ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2010 THE FUEL TANK ON MY 2001 FORD F-150 TRUCK BROKE FREE OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND WAS DRAGGED APPROXIMATELY 200 METERS BEFORE I COULD SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, I WAS TRAVELING 60 MPH. UPON EXITING THE VEHICLE, I SMELLED STRONG GASOLINE FUMES AND OBSERVED GASOLINE RUNNING FROM UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK. I MOVED AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND A TOW SERVICE. FROM A DISTANCE (APPROXIMATELY 150 FEET) THE GASOLINE TANK WAS CLEARLY RESTING ON THE ROAD SURFACE. ONCE HELP WAS ON THE SCENE, GRANULAR ABSORBENT MATERIAL WAS ADDED TO THE GASOLINE WHICH HAD SPILLED ONTO THE ROAD. THE NOW EMPTY GAS TANK WAS SECURED BY ROPE TO THE TRUCK UNDERCARRIAGE, REVEALING A LARGE HOLE IN THE GAS TANK. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE STRAPS HOLDING THE TANK HAD BROKE. THE TRUCK WAS REMOVED FROM THE SCENE ON A FLAT-BED TRUCK. THE TOTAL COST ASSOCIATED WITH THE GAS TANK STRAPS BREAKING IS $841.00. *TR UPDATED 08/01/11 *BF THE STRAP FAILED WHERE IT ATTACHED TO THE TRUCK FRAME. APPARENTLY THE STRAPS HOLDING THE GAS TANK ON TO MY 2001 FORD F-150 PICK UP RUSTED. TODAY THE TANK FELL OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING WHEN ONE OF THE STRAPS LET GO. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO FIRE, HOWEVER I SPILLED A FULL TANK OF GAS WHEN THE TANK SPLIT. THE MILEAGE IS 101,000. FORD SAYS IT'S NO LONGER IN WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THIS SEEMS TO BE A GROWING PROBLEM. *TT

WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, I HEARD A LOUD POP FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FOLLOWED BY THE ENGINE RUNNING ROUGHLY AND ACCOMPANIED BY POPPING SOUNDS. WITHIN 10 SECONDS, THE SMELL OF GASOLINE WAS NOTICED. I PULLED OFF AT THE NEXT EXIT, APPROXIMATELY 30 SECONDS LATER, AND CAME TO A STOP. AS I CAME TO A STOP, FLAMES ERUPTED FROM THE HOOD AND THE ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. A FIRE TRUCK ARRIVED WITHIN A FEW MINUTES AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE, BUT NOT BEFORE THE FIRE HAD BURNED THROUGH THE FIREWALL INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE #8 CYLINDER SPARK PLUG HAD EJECTED FROM THE CYLINDER (THE INITIAL POP SOUND) WITH SUCH FORCE THAT IT RUPTURED THE RUBBER FUEL LINE IMMEDIATELY ABOVE IT AND AFT OF THE STAINLESS FUEL INJECTOR BAR. WITH FUEL SPRAYING FROM THE HOSE, IT WAS THEN IGNITED BY THE COIL WHICH WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE AND EMITTING SPARKS. IT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED THAT THE CYLINDER HEAD DESIGN IN THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD A HISTORY OF PROBLEMS WITH EJECTING SPARK PLUGS DUE TO A LACK OF ADEQUATE THREADS IN THE SPARK PLUG HOLES. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD F-150. THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE PARKED OUTSIDE THE CONTACT'S PLACE OF WORK. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT STATE WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE. THE FIRE BURNED THE MOTOR, CREATED A HOLE THROUGH THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE, AND SCORCHED THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD. THE WINDSHIELD GLASS BURST INTO PIECES AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE FORD DEALER FILED A CASE AND FOLLOWED-UP WITH THE CONTACT WITHIN 15 BUSINESS DAYS AND INFORMED HIM THAT SOMEONE WOULD DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE. I RETURNED HOME TO CHECK FOR ANY DAMAGE TO MY TRUCK, BUT FOUND NONE. AFTER A CALL THE THE PEPBOYS STORE WHERE I PURCHASED THEM ON APR. 30, 2013, AS WELL AS THE ROAD HAZARD SERVICE PLAN, I LEARNED THEY DO NOT CARRY THESE TIRES ANY MORE. I WAS OFFERED A DIFFERENT BRAND TIRE AS A REPLACEMENT. CAN YOU IMAGINE DRIVING YOUR PRIDE AND JOY WITH THREE TIRES OF ONE BRAND AND ONE OF A DIFFERENT BRAND. UNACCEPTABLE!! TWO BLOCKS FROM MY RESIDENCE, I EXPERIENCED A LOUD 'BOOM', TREAD SEPARATION AND DAMAGE TO MY RIGHT REAR QUARTER PANEL, FENDER BRACES AND MY EXHAUST PIPE. THE TIRE IN QUESTION IS A GOODRICH T/A KM LT 285/75R/16/122/119/D M + S MUD TIRE. THIS IS A LOAD RANGE D TIRE WITH A MAX OF 65 PSI. I USE 50 PSI. THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED IN 2007/2008, AND MOUNTED ON SEPARATE RIMS. THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT AND THE MUD TERRAIN TIRES WERE EXCHANGED OFTEN.MY TRUCK HAS APPROXIMATELY 40K TOTAL MILES. IF THE DRIVING ON EACH TIRE WERE DIVIDED EVENLY, EACH TIRE WOULD ONLY HAVE 18K MILES, AT THE TIME OF THE TIRE FAILURE. THE TIRES WERE ROTATED OFTEN. INFLATION WAS CHECKED EVERY WEEK. I CHOSE NOT TO USE THE ROAD HAZARD WARRANTY TO REPLACE THE TIRE. AS IT HAPPENED ON A NEWLY REBUILT STREET.THIS TIRE HAS A 3 PLY SIDE WALL AND A 5 PLY TREAD. THIS TYPE OF TREAD SEPARATION SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. I WANT GOODRICH TO REPLACE ALL TIRES, BECAUSE I'M AFRAID TO USE THEM. HAD THIS FAILURE HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEED, RESULTS COULD BE WORSE. I HAVE TRIED TO REASON WITH GOODRICH CONSUMER REPRESENTATIVES, TO NO AVAIL. THE TIRES 'WERE TOO OLD', BASED ON THE DOT NUMBER. SEARS WANTS TO ONLY REPLACE 1 TIRE. I BELIEVE THE SET TO BE DANGEROUS. The contact owns a 2001 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and shut off at the residence, the vehicle caught fire, with flames coming from underneath the hood. No injuries were sustained. The fire department arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire. A fire department report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a body shop and was not yet deemed totaled by the insurance company. I OWN A 2001 FORD F-150. ON DECEMBER 16,2006 IT CAUGHT FIRE AND IS NOW CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS BY OUR INSURANCE COMPANY. IT HAS COMPLETELY BURNED TO THE GROUND. I WAS DRIVING TO WORK THIS MORNING AND AROUND 7:00 AM. IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 20 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND I TRIED THE REAR DEFROSTER. THE REAR DEFROSTER HAS WORKED ONLY ABOUT 20% OF THE TIME FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS AND NOT AT ALL FOR THE LAST 3 WEEKS; SO NEEDLESS TO SAY I WAS VERY SURPRISED WHEN IT ACTUALLY TURNED ON TODAY. 10 MINUTES AFTER TURNING ON THE DEFROST I WAS DRIVING APPROX 30MPH THROUGH TOWN WHEN I HEARD A LOUD BANG INSIDE THE TRUCK. IT WAS LOUD ENOUGH THAT I SWERVED AND LOOKED AROUND TO SEE IF PEOPLE WERE THROWING ICE CHUNKS AT CARS OR SHOOTING BB GUNS. A FEW MINUTES LATER I NOTICED THAT THE REAR WINDSHIELD ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE TRUCK HAD COMPLETELY SHATTERED. THE ONLY THING HOLDING THE GLASS TOGETHER IS THE TINT TAPE. START TO DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD THEY WOULD TURN OFF OR NOT WORK AT ALL OR WOK SOMETIMES. RAISE THE STEERING WHEEL THEY WORK. LOWER IT THEY DON'T. THIS INDICATES FROM FURTHER RESEARCH ON LINE IN FORD F150 FORUMS THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE WIRING BEING TO SHORT AND THE WIRES GET PULLED OUT OF THE SWITCH. IT IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE IN F!%) FROM 98 UP TO 2004 AND ARE NOW BEING REPORTED IN NEWER MODELS AS WELL. THE STEERING COLUMN WIRING IS TOO SHORT, AND BREAKAGE IN THE WIRE, OR CONNECTORS CAN OCCUR WITH THE TILT STEERING MECHANISM. IN NOVEMBER 2004 I TOOK MY 2001 EXPEDITION INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY FOUND A HEAD GASKET DEFECTIVE AND REPLACED IT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER GETTING THE CAR BACK FROM DEALERSHIP THE STEERING WAS GIVING RESISTANCE WHILE DRIVING. WE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD US IT WAS PROBABLY "AIR IN THE POWER STEERING LINES" AND THAT SOMETIMES HAPPENS AFTER FIXING THE PROBLEM THEY FIXED. THEY TOLD US IT WOULD "WORK ITSELF OUT". WELL, IT DIDN'T WORK ITSELF OUT, IT GOT WORSE. SO WE TOOK THE CAR BACK TO DEALERSHIP IN JUNE 2005 AND THEY COULD NOT "REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM SO AFTER SOME COMPLAINING FROM US, THEY RECHECKED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT P/S PUMP EVO ACTUATOR TO BE CAUSING THE PROBLEM AND REPLACED THE POWER STEERING PUMP. THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE CAR WAS STILL GIVING RESISTENCE IN THE STEERING. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED TO GET WORSE AND WORSE, SO IN OCTOBER 2005, WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN. WE PURCHASED OUR 2001 F150 SUPERCREW USED. I AM A MECHANIC, SO THE FIRST THING I DO WHEN BUYING A USED VEHICLE IS INSPECT IT THOROUGHLY. THERE WERE A FEW MINOR ISSUES, BUT ONE STOOD OUT AS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, IT SEEMS TO BE EXTREMELY COMMON TO ALL 1997-2003 F-150S. SYMPTOMS - THIS ISSUE MAINLY AFFECTS THE REAR LEFT AND RIGHT BRAKE LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS, AND HAZARD LIGHTS. THESE LIGHTS, PARTICULARLY BRAKE LIGHTS, CAN CEASE TO FUNCTION ENTIRELY, INTERMITTENTLY AND UNKNOWN TO THE DRIVER. CAUSE - THERE IS A WIRE HARNESS WHICH CONNECTS TO THE "MULTI - FUNCTION SWITCH". THIS WIRE HARNESS IS PULLED WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TILTED DOWN. AS A RESULT, THE CONNECTOR OR INDIVIDUAL TERMINALS CAN BECOME LOOSE OR DISCONNECTED. THIS PROBLEM IS MOST PREVALENT WITH THE STEERING WHEEL IN THE DOWN POSITION, BUT ONCE LOOSE CAN HAPPEN AT ANY POSITION AND ANY DRIVING SITUATION. SOLUTION - REPAIR OR REPLACE WITH MOTORCRAFT PART# WPT607, AND ENSURE THE HARNESS HAS ENOUGH SLACK TO ALLOW STEERING WHEEL TILT WITHOUT TENSION ON THE HARNESS. IN OUR CASE, I REPLACED THE CONNECTOR AND PULLED THE WIRES ENOUGH TO ALLOW SLACK FOR STEERING WHEEL TILT. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE ONLINE, AND IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED BY F150 OWNERS. I HAVE PICTURES BUT THE FILE SIZES ARE OVER 5MB.

THERE HAS BEEN NO INCIDENT AS YET BUT THE FRAME OF THIS VEHICLE HAS SUCH EXTREME CORROSION THAT CERTIFIED MECHANICS ARE RELUCTANT TO WORK ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT A FAILURE OCCURRING AT CONNECTION POINT WHERE THE STEERING AND SUSPENSION CONNECTS TO THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. THEIR CONCERN IS A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IF ANY OF THE STEERING OR SUSPENSION CONNECTION POINTS FAIL DUE TO THE SEVERELY CORRODED FRAME. THIS IS NOT SURFACE CORROSION, THE METAL IS FLAKED AND SEPARATED AND IT IS THE ENTIRE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. I HAD JUST SPENT $4,000 TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE EXHAUST SYSTEM FROM THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD BACK TO THE TAIL PIPE AND THE MECHANIC IS WARNING ME ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE SUSPENSION AND STEERING COMPONENTS BECAUSE OF THE EXTREME CORROSION. 2001 FORD F-150. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED DURING ROUTINE USE OF THE TRUCK, THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED FUNCTIONING. THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP, INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE CAST STEEL GEAR WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION HAD SHATTERED INTO TWO PIECES. IN OCTOBER 2009, DURING AN ANNUAL SAFETY INSPECTION, THE STRAPS HOLDING THE FUEL TANK IN PLACE WERE CORRODED AND ALMOST COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. IN THE SUMMER OF 2013, FORD MOTOR COMPANY, SENT THE CONSUMER A NOTICE, INFORMING HIM THE FUEL TANK STRAP WERE BEING RECALLED. THE CONSUMER WAS NOT OVERLY CONCERNED, SINCE THEY HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED, FORD SENT ANOTHER RECALL. THE CONSUMER INFORMED FORD, HE HAD THE STRAPS REPLACED. FORD THEN ADVISED THE CONSUMER TO VISIT THE DEALER ABOUT REIMBURSEMENT. THE DEALER WANTED TO SEE WHAT REPAIRS HAD BEEN MADE. ONCE THE TRUCK WAS ON THE LIFT, IT WAS DISCOVERED THE ORIGINAL FAULTY TANK STRAPS HAD CAUSED A WEAKENING IN THE SKIN OF THE FUEL TAN ITSELF AND THAT IT WAS LEAKING GASOLINE THROUGH THE SKIN OF THE TANK. ATTEMPTING TO PARK VEHICLE IN PARKING STALL WITH FOOT ON BRAKE STOPPING THE VEHICLE. THE FUEL TANK STRAPS ON MY 2001 FORD F150 ARE COMPLETELY RUSTED. OTHER AREAS HAVE ALSO RUSTED OUT SUCH AS THE RADIATOR SUPPORTS - RADIATOR AND SHROUD DROPPED OUT AND ARE HITTING AGAINST THE ENGINE FAN. THE PICK-UP BED OF THE TRUCK IS ALSO RUSTING OUT. UPDATED 08/11/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN HE INSPECTED THE STRAPS, HE FOUND ONE OF THEM COMPLETELY COVERED IN RUST, BUT STILL IN TACT. ALSO, THERE WAS UNUSUAL RUSTING ALL OVER THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE ENTIRE LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT WAS ROTTED OUT AND THE UNDERSIDE OF THE PICK-UP BED AND OTHER SUPPORTS HAVE MAJOR RUST. UPDATED 08/12/11 THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THE SUPPORT GAVE OUT THE RADIATOR AND RADIATOR SHROUD FELL ONTO THE FAN THAT IS MOUNTED TO THE ENGINE. I HAVE A 2001 FORD F150 REGULAR CAB LONG BED WITH 75,000 MILES. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH THE RIGHT INNER TIE ROD BROKE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHUDDER SIGNIFICANTLY UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THIS BRIEF SHUDDERING CAUSED THE REAR FUEL TANK STRAP TO SNAP IN HALF PRIMARILY DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE STRAP. LOSS OF THE SUPPORTING STRAP CAUSED THE REAR OF THE TANK TO DROP ALMOST TO GROUND LEVEL WHICH ALSO BROKE THE FILLER INLET OFF OF THE TOP OF THE TANK, COMPLETELY DISCONNECTING THE FILLER TUBE AND PRESENTING A LARGE HOLE FOR FUEL TO ESCAPE. MAY 19, 2011 AT AROUND 4:20 AM WE WERE AWAKEN BY OUR NEIGHBORS THAT OUR TRUCK WAS ON FIRE. OUR 2001 FORD F150 WAS ON FIRE, AN EXPLOSION HAD MADE A HUGE HOLE IN THE HOOD ON THE FRONT OF THE DRIVER SIDE. THE TRUCK HAD LAST BEEN DRIVEN THE MORNING OF MAY 17, 2011 AND HAD BEEN SITTING IN OUR DRIVEWAY SINCE THEN. THE FIREMEN SAID THE FIRE WAS DUE TO ELECTRICAL WIRING. WE ALWAYS KEPT UP WITH ALL REQUIRED MAINTENANCE. WE HAD NO IDEA OF THE PROBLEMS FORDS WERE HAVING, WE NOW ONLY HAVE ONE VEHICLE TO GET AROUND AND THE WORST PART IS THAT IT'S A 2004 FORD F250 WHICH COULD ALSO BE A RECALL VEHICLE. OUR INCOME IS VERY TIGHT BECAUSE MY MOTHER IS VERY SICK AND WE ARE SENDING MONEY FOR HER MEDICATION AND EXPENSES, WE HAVE NO WAY OF GETTING ANOTHER VEHICLE. STARTED TRUCK HEARD A LOUD POP ENGINE RUNNING ROUGH CHECKED,SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT DESTROYING COIL PACK NOW CALLED FORD DEALER THEY SAID NO RECALL CHECKED ON INTERNET NOTICED A LOT OF PEOPLE SAME PROBLEM. A LOT MONEY TO REPAIR. I HAD JUST GOT BACK FROM A 600 MILE TRIP IF THIS HAD HAPPENED DURING TRIP WOULD HAVE COST ME UP TO $4.000 TO GET ON ROAD AGAIN, THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL! MY FIRST FORD F150 HAD A ENGINE FIRE AS A RESULT OF THE FAULTY BRAKE FLUID SWITCH. I WAS TOLD THIS TRUCK WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND DIDN'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM BY FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE WHEN I CALLED TO REPORT IT. SINCE THEN THE RECALL WAS EXPANDED. MY CURRENT FORD F150 HAS A LEAKY BRAKE FLUID SWITCH AND MY CRUISE CONTROL DOESN'T WORK. THIS SWITCH IS THE ONE THAT WAS PUT ON BY FORD AFTER I BROUGHT IT IN FOR THE RECALL. FORD SAID THIS IS NOT AN ADDITIONAL RECALL. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS WILL RESULT IN ANOTHER FIRE AND THEN UNFORTUNATELY BE RECALLED LATER. I HAVE A 2001 FORD F150 CREWCAB TRUCK. ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK, MY VEHICLE STARTED MAKING AN AWFUL NOISE AND THE TRUCK INSTANTLY STARTED WORKING ROUGH. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE TRUCK. MY HUSBAND CAME TO CHECK ON ME AND WHEN WE POPPED THE HOOD AND WHEN I TURNED ON THE TRUCK HE SAW THE SPARK PLUG COMING OUT OF THE CYLINDER. I HAVE YET TO HAVE THE MECHANIC LOOK AT IT. AFTER READING UP ON THIS, I SEE THIS IS A RECURRENT PROBLEM ON FORD TRUCKS. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE REGARDING THIS MATTER. THERE AREN'T ANY REAL EVENTS LEADING TO THE FAILURE. I TOOK MY TRUCK INTO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP (GARY CROSSLEY FORD) TO HAVE THE SPEED CONTROL RECALL WORK DONE. WHILE THERE I ASKED TO HAVE A STATE INSPECTION DONE AS WELL. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINT WERE SOMEWHAT LOOSE AND WOULD NEED REPLACING - SO I HAD THEM DO THAT AS WELL AS FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION AS WELL (THIS TRUCK ONLY HAD 62,000 MILES ON IT). FOLLOWING THAT IT PASSED INSPECTIONS - ALL WAS WELL. NOT EVEN ONE MONTH LATER (POSSIBLY ONLY 3 WEEKS) I TRIED BACKING FROM MY PARKING SPOT AT WORK AND HEARD A *THUNK* FROM THE REAR END. NOT SURE WHAT IT WAS I BACKED UP MORE AND HEARD IT AGAIN. PUT THE TRUCK IN DRIVE AND THERE WAS A RUBBING NOISE FROM UNDERNEATH. I PARKED IT AND CALLED A TOW RIG TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER. UPON HEARING FROM THEM THE FOLLOWING DAY I WAS TOLD THE CARRIER BEARING IN THE REAR END HAD "EXPLODED" AND I'D NEED TO REPLACE MOST EVERYTHING IN THE REAR END. AGREED TO HAVE THE WORK DONE. GOT A CALL A DAY LATER TELLING ME THAT PROBLEM WAS FIXED, BUT THERE WAS ANOTHER - THE *THUNKING* WAS STILL THERE AND WAS LIKELY THE TRANSMISSION. THIS MAY BE A MOOT POINT BECAUSE THE TRUCK (2001 F-150 SUPERCREW XLT 4WD) I HAD OWNED (TRADED IT IN FOR A 2003 FORD SUPERCREW WHICH ALSO EXHIBITS VERY SIMILAR PROBLEMS) HAD SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING IN ADDITION TO THE DRIVER SEATBELT BECOMING DISENGAGED WHILE DRIVING NORMALLY. I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE SEATBELT WOULD DISENGAGE ALL BY ITSELF. I EVEN HAD WITNESSES TO THE FACT. I ASKED FOR THE SERVICE TO ADDRESS IT; HOWEVER, THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. 2001 FORD F-150 CRANK NO START CONDITION.BETWEEN JUNE AND AUGUST OF 2003 MY FORD F-150 HAS BEEN TOWED IN THREE TIMES AND NOT STARTED AT LEAST TWO DOZEN TIMES. THE FIRST DEALER REPLACED THE MAIN FUEL RELAY. THE SECOND TIME IT WAS TOWED TO ANOTHER DEALER AND AFTER FIVE DAYS COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM, AND I PICKED THE TRUCK UP. AFTER GOING BACK THRU THIS WHOLE THING I STARTED THINKING IT HAD TO BE THIS MAIN FUEL RELAY AND DECIDED TO DO SOME TESTING ON MY OWN. I WORK IN ELECTRONICS AND SO I GOT A COUPLE TYCO RELAYS AND A CAN OF FREEZE SPRAY. THE NEXT TIME THIS HAPPENED I PULLED THE FORD RELAY AND REPLACED IT WITH A NEW ONE - THE TRUCK STARTED RIGHT UP. THE NEXT TIME I GET THE CAN OF FREEZE SPRAY OUT AND COOL THE RELAY AND THE TRUCK STARTS UP. IM FINDING THIS TO BE WARM WEATHER RELATED AND EVERY TIME IT GET HOT OUTSIDE I CAN PLAN ON THE TRUCK NOT STARTING AFTER DRIVING A SHORT TIME AND THEN SHUTTING OFF. IF THE TRUCK SITS BY ITSELF LONG ENOUGH FOR THE RELAY TO COOL DOWN IT WILL START I THINK FORD SHOULD COME UP WILL A LONG TERM FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM INSTEAD OF REPLACING RELAYS.*AK

FLUID LEAK IN CLUTCH SYSTEM, DEALER COULD NOT FIND SOURCE SO HE RELPACED MASTER CYLINDER AND SLAVE CYLINDER. THEN FEB 21 2003 HAD SAME PROBLEM. DEALER RELACED COMPLETE CLUCH ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE SLAVE CYLINDER. ALSO AT THIS TIME THEY NOTICED THAT THE AIR BAG SWITCH WAS NOT FUNCTIONING PRORERLY. THIS SWITCH HAD BEEN TURNED OFF AT TIME OF DELIVERY AND WAS NEVER TURNED ON AGAIN. HOW CAN THIS SWITCH FAIL UNDER THIS CONDITION? THIS TRUCK IS DRIVEN OVER THE ROAD AND WELL MAINTAINED. I DON'T FEEL THAT I SHOULD BE HAVING THIS MUCH TROUBLE WHEN THE CLUTCH IS NOT USED AS MUCH AS IF IT WERE USED FOR IN TOWN OR SUBURAN DRIVING. I FEEL THAT THIS MODEL AND YEAR HAS A FAULTY CLUTCH AND AIR BAG SYSTEM.

OUR INSURED, MR MOHSSIN, PERFORMED AN EVASIVE MANUEVER AT HIGHWAY SPEED APPLYING THE BRAKES TO THE MAXIMUM WHILE TURNING. HIS 2001 F150 HARLEY EDITION IS EQUIPPED WITH ABS AS WELL AS 20" RIMS WHICH ARE 40LBS HEAVIER THAN STOCK. IN THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS, WE HAVE GATHERED SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST THAT THE LF AND RF BRAKE CALIPER BRACKETS SNAPPED DURING THIS LOSS CAUSING BOTH TIRE/WHEEL/HUB ASSYS TO SHEAR OFF THE SPINDLE NUTS AND BECOME SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO IMPACT WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE PRIOR TO THIS AND ALL COMPONENTS ON THIS VEHICLE ARE OEM. IT IS THE OPINION OF OUR INDPENDENT RECONSTRUCTIONIST ENGINEER THAT THERE IS AMPLE REASON FOR FORD TO BE CONCERNED AND REVIEW THE EVIDENCE FOR THEMSELVES. TO DATE, WE HAVE HAD NO LUCK GETTING ANY RESPONSE OR INTEREST IN REVIEWING OUR FINDINGS. MANY AVENUES HAVE BEEN PURSUED TO SEEK SOME RESPONSE. THE ONLY CONTACT SO FAR HAS DIRECTED US TO SUBMIT A SUBROGATION DEMAND IF WE SEEK RECOVERY. OUR CONCERN AT THIS POINT IS TO GET THE INSURED HIS VEHICLE BACK. PHYSICAL EVIDENCE HAS BEEN SECURED. REPAIRS WILL BEGIN THE FIRST WEEK OF JULY. WE WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF THE NHTSA COULD PERSUADE A FORD REPRESENTATIVE TO CONTACT OUR NCAL PD MGR, ERIC HACKER AT 916 853-4607 TO CONFIRM FORD'S POSITION. THE POPPING SOUND IN THE DRIVERS SEAT FEELS LIKE THE SEAT IS TRYING TO MOVE FORWARD OUT OF THE LOCKED POSITION. WHEN CONSUMER PURCHASED THE VEHICLE THE VEHICLE HAD A NOISE UNDERNEATH. IT WAS TOLD TO CONSUMER THAT IT WAS BEING REPAIRED WITH A NEW MUFFLER THAT HAD BEEN ORDERED. AT THE TIME THE MUFFLER WAS BEING REPAIRED THE VIBRATION ALSO WAS WORKED ON. THE WORK DID NOT CORRECT THE VIBRATION PROBLEM. A SERVICE MAN TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE WITH THE CONSUMER AND AGAIN THE VIBRATION PRESENTED ITSELF. FOUR NEW TIRES WERE INSTALLED BUT THIS DIDN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM. *JG

F150 LARIAT WITH TOW PACKAGE PURCHASED NEW. TIRES ON THE VEHICLE WERE GOODRICH PASSENGER TIRES WITH PROPER WEIGHT RATING. HOWEVER, WHEN PULLING A 24 FT. TRAVEL TRAILER; THE TRUCK AND TRAILER WOULD AGGRESSIVELY SWAY WHEN HIT WITH LIGHT BREEZE OR PASSING VEHICLES. NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES. TESTED ALL HITCH/TRAILER/CENTER OF GRAVITY/WEIGHT ASPECTS AND ALL TESTED OKAY. TESTED PULLING TRAILER AT LOW SPEED WITH NO WIND/OTHER VEHICLES. DISCOVERED THE SMALLEST STEERING INPUT CAUSED SEVERE LATERAL SWAY WITH OSCILLATIONS BECOMING STRONGER WITHOUT CORRECTIVE ACTION. THE TIRES, ALTHOUGH RATED TO CARRY OVER 2,000 LBS., DO NOT HAVE THE SIDEWALL STRENGTH TO WITHSTAND THE LATERAL MOVEMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH PULLING A SMALL TRAVEL TRAILER. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED THESE NEW PASSENGER TIRES WITH LIGHT TRUCK TIRES AND FOUND THAT THE DANGEROUS SWAY HAS BEEN ELIMINATED. I HAVE INVESTED OVER $850 IN NEW TIRES IN ORDER TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AND I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT OTHER FORD TRUCK OWNERS MIGHT EXPERIENCE A SERIOUS COLLISION IF THEY USE THEIR TRUCK AND TOWING PACKAGE TO PULL A TRAVEL TRAILER IF THEIR TRUCK IS ONLY EQUIPPED WITH PASSENGER TIRES. I ORDERED MY F-150 SUPERCREW IN AUGUST 2000. THE TRUCK WAS BUILT IN LATE SEPTEMBER AND I TOOK DELIVERY IN THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER 2000. ALTHOUGH MY TRUCK WAS SOLD AS A 2001 MODEL, FORD HAS SUBSEQUENTLY MADE TWO CRITICAL SAFETY MODIFICATIONS IN THE 2001 SUPERCREWS THAT WERE PRODUCED AFTER MY BUILD DATE. THE "LATEST" 2001 MODEL INCLUDES REAR SEAT HEADRESTS AND CHILD SEAT ANCHORS IN THE REAR SEATS. AS NOTED IN MY REPORT, I WAS RECENTLY DRIVING IN THE CITY AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH WHEN I WAS FORCED TO MAKE A PANIC STOP. MY WIFE, WHO WAS RIDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE REAR SEAT (TWO-POINT SEAT BELT), WAS INITIALLY PUSHED FORWARD BY THE FORCE OF THE BRAKING THEN HIT HER HEAD ON THE REAR WINDOW UPON RECOIL. FORTUNATELY, SHE SUFFERED NO INJURIES. AT THE SAME TIME, MY 3 YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER (SITTING IN A PROPERLY INSTALLED, DOUBLE SHOULDER HARNESS CHILD SEAT) WAS ALSO PUSHED FORWARD AND BACK BY THE FORCE OF THE STOP. DESPITE THE FACT THAT SHE WAS WELL SECURED IN THE SEAT, THE FORWARD AND BACK MOTION WAS INTENSIFIED BY THE LACK OF A CHILD SEAT ANCHOR. IN MY OPINION, FORD'S RECOGNITION OF THESE SAFETY "DEFECTS" IS CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED IN THE MODIFICATIONS THAT WERE MADE TO TRUCKS PRODUCED AFTER NOVEMBER 2000. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT GIVEN THE POTENTIAL FOR SERIOUS INJURY AS A RESULT OF THESE SAFETY DEFECTS, ALL 2001 SUPERCREWS PRODUCED PRIOR TO THE MODIFICATION DATE SHOULD BE RECALLED FOR RETROFITTING. *AK
