COIL SPRING IN DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT STRUT FAILED SUDDENLY WHEN VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON RESIDENTIAL STREET IN SISTER BAY, WI. THERE WAS A LOUD BANG WHEN SPRING FRACTURED AND SUSPENSION COLLAPSED. FAILURE OF COIL SPRING OCCURRED AT ABOUT 10:15 AM ON THURSDAY JUNE 29, 2017. AFTER VEHICLE WAS SAFELY PARKED IN A BANK PARKING LOT THE OWNER THEN JACKED UP FRONT END AND REMOVED WHEEL/TIRE. OWNER NOTICED HOW ENERGY RELEASED WHEN COIL SPRING FRACTURED DROVE SPRING VIOLENTLY DOWNWARD TO FRONT WHEEL KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY. FORTUNATELY WHEN SPRING WAS DRIVEN DOWNWARD IT DID NOT PUNCTURE TIRE. THE NEXT DAY VEHICLE WAS LOADED ON A TRANSPORTER AND TAKEN TO JIM OLSON EXPRESS IN STURGEON BAY, WI, FOR REPAIR. SUBSEQUENT REPAIRS INCLUDED REPLACEMENT OF BOTH FRONT STRUTS AND ALIGNMENT CHECK/ADJUSTMENT. TOTAL COST OF REPAIR INCLUDING CHARGE OF USD 165 BY TRANSPORTER COMPANY WAS USD 1,010. AT TIME OF COIL SPRING FAILURE THE VEHICLE HAD 134,128 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. VISUAL INSPECTION BY OWNER OF BROKEN PIECE OF COIL SPRING DID NOT REVEAL ANY SURFACE CORROSION. OWNER SPECULATES COIL SPRING FRACTURE MAY HAVE BEEN DUE TO 15 YEARS OF STRESS LOADS ON THE SPRING OR PERHAPS THERE WAS A DEFECT IN METAL OF COIL SPRING.

SINCE I BOUGHT MY FORD IN JULY 2003 I'VE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT MY WINDSHIELD BEING DEFECTIVE, THE WINDSHIELD ITSELF HAS LITTLE CHIPS IN IT (A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN THE GLASS) AND I'VE ALWAYS COMPLAINED TO MY FORD DEALER ABOUT HIGHWAY NOISE. 9 YEARS LATER THE "NOISE" HAS GOTTEN SO BAD THAT I'M AFRAID THAT IF I HIT A POT HOLE HARD ENOUGH THAT MY WINDSHIELD WILL FALL OUT! ALSO THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER OF MY WINDSHIELD HAS GOTTEN SO BAD THAT I HAD TO STUFF TISSUES TO REDUCE THE RATTLING OF MY WINDSHIELD. AFTER DOING EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON RECALLS FOR MY CAR I'VE FOUND ONE RECALL FOR THE EXACT PROBLEM I'VE BEEN HAVING ALL THESE YEARS. PLEASE TELL ME THAT I CAN STILL HAVE MY WINDSHIELD REPLACED. ON 14 OCT 2017, THE SUBJECT VEHICLE HAD JUST BEEN SERVICED. ON THE DRIVE HOME, THE THROTTLE CABLE BECAME STUCK CAUSING THE CAR TO NOT STOP ACCELERATING. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY AND STOPPED THE CAR BY CRASHING INTO A DUMPSTER/FENCE AT A SERVICE STATION.

DRIVING AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 25 MPH ,MY CAR SUDDENLY REVVED UP AND SPED UP WITHOUT MY PRESSING THE GAS. I NEARLY REAR-ENDED A CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I PRESSED ON MY BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD BUT IT DID NOT HELP MUCH .I DOWNSHIFTED TO 3RD GEAR BUT STILL NOT MUCH HELP. FINALLY IT RETURNED TO NORMAL SPEED. I WAS TOO SCARED AND DID NOT SEE HOW HIGH THE RPMS WENT.

ENTERING MY NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN GAS PEDAL "BROKE". CAR ACCELERATED TO HIGHEST RPM AND I HAD TO COUNTERACT THIS BY PUTTING BOTH FEET ON MY BRAKES TO KEEP MY CAR FROM FLYING OFF AND HITTING SOMETHING. EXTREMELY SCARY. CAR CANNOT BE TURNED ON WITHOUT THE ENGINE REVVING TO THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE SPEED. HAD I BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE I MAY BE DEAD. GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY TO FLOOR. HAVE NOT YET HAD IT INSPECTED BY A SHOP.

WHILE ACCELERATING ONTO AN INTERSTATE(210FRWY IN LA), THE VEHICLE BEGAN ACCELERATING ON IT'S OWN UP TO 4000 RPM'S. THE CAR REACHED UP TO 80 MPH WITHOUT TOUCHING THE PEDAL. I HAD TO USE THE NEUTRAL SETTING ON TRANSMISSION TO SLOW DOWN AND EVENTUALLY EXIT THE BUSY HIGHWAY. AFTER CHECKING UNDER THE HOOD I NOTICED THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE OUT OF IT'S PLASTIC RETAINER AND STUCK ALONG THE BROKEN PLASTIC CLIP THAT HOLDS IT. THIS CAR BELONGS TO MY 78 YR OLD FATHER INLAW AND I AM GLAD THIS HAPPENED TO ME AND NOT HIM OR THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL. FORD SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS DESIGN FLAW IN MY OPINION. AT THE VERY LEAST THEY SHOULD HAVE A SIMPLE FIX LIKE A METAL CABLE RETAINER.

I PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW IN 2002 AFTER PREVIOUSLY OWNING SEVERAL FORD VEHICLES. ON JULY 20, 2012, I ATTENDED A FAMILY FUNERAL A LITTLE OVER TWO HOURS AWAY FROM MY HOME. WHILE RETURNING HOME VIA I-75 IN MIDDLE GEORGIA, THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY FAILED. WHILE TRAVELING AT 70 MPH, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY INCREASED TO OVER 6000 RPM. I IMMEDIATELY LET OFF THE GAS AND LOOKED IN THE REAR VIEW TO SEE WHITE SMOKE BOILING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. AFTER SAFELY GETTING THE CAR OFF THE INTERSTATE, I RAISED THE HOOD TO SEE TRANSMISSION FLUID ALL OVER THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE. IT'S SIMPLY A MIRACLE THE CAR DID NOT CATCH FIRE. I WAITED FOR TWO HOURS IN 100 DEGREE HEAT BEFORE A TOW TRUCK ARRIVED. AFTER BEING TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME AND I QUOTE, "WE SEE A LOT OF TAURUS TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS LIKE THIS AT AROUND 120,000 MILES." IF THIS IS SO, WHY CAN'T FORD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM? I REALIZE THE CAR HAS SOME AGE ON IT, BUT THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD LAST MUCH LONGER THAN THIS. SINCE DAY ONE, I HAVE "BABIED" THIS CAR AND HAVE NEVER ONCE ABUSED IT IN ANY WAY. I HAVE NEVER DRIVEN IT RECKLESSLY AND HAVE ALWAYS SERVICED IT ON REGULAR INTERVALS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN MY SHOP FOR OVER 3 YEARS BECAUSE WE CAN'T AFFORD TO GET IT REPAIRED. I WISH FORD WOULD MAN UP AND DO THE RIGHT THING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM FOR ME AND MANY OTHERS. THE DRIVER'S DOOR HANDLE WILL FREEZE UP ON PARTICULARLY COLD DAYS, AND THE DOOR WILL NOT STAY SHUT ONCE IT HAS BEEN OPENED. CONSEQUENTLY, THE DOOR HAS TO BE TIED SHUT, OR IT HAS TO BE HELD ON TO. IT HAS BEEN THIS WAY FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS, EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE ATTEMPTED SEVERAL "SURE" FIXES FOR THE PROBLEM. ONCE THE WEATHER WARMS UP, THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY... UNTIL THE NEXT COLD SNAP. IT IS NOT COLD OUT RIGHT NOW, SO I CAN'T DOCUMENT THIS WITH A PHOTOGRAPH. INCIDENTALLY, ALL OF THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLES TEND TO STAY IN THE "OPEN" POSITION ONCE THEY HAVE BEEN LIFTED. I HAVE A 2002 FORD TAURUS STATION WAGON. WHILE PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY TO GET THE VEHICLE OFF THE STREET AND CALLED A MECHANIC. UPON REMOVING THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL HE DISCOVERED THAT THE LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING HAD SNAPPED AND THAT THE JAGGED EDGED OF THE SPRING HAD SLICED THROUGH THE TIRE SIDE WALL. THE CAR WAS TOWED THE MECHANICS GARAGE WHERE UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION HE FOUND THAT THE LEFT FRONT SWAY BAR LINK AND THE LEFT FRONT STRUT ASSEMBLY WERE ALSO DAMAGED. THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED ONLY ONCE - SO FAR. THE CONSEQUENCE IN THIS CASE WERE NOT CATASTROPHIC - LOSS OF USE OF THE CAR FOR 2 DAYS AND A $950 DOLLAR REPAIR BILL ALTHOUGH I HATE TO THINK OF THE CONSEQUENCES HAD I BEEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND HAD THIS HAPPEN. TRAVELING ON DARKENED ROAD WITH AUTOMATIC HEADLAMPS ENGAGED AT NIGHT. HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY CUT OFF, AND HAD TO CHANGE SELECTOR SWITCH TO MANUAL HEAD LIGHTS. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES.. I HAD THE LIGHT SENSOR REPLACED BUT NO CHANGE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH, THE CAUSE IS MOST LIKELY THE AUTOMATIC HEADLAMP RELAY, WHICH IS NOT REPLACEABLE, AS IT IS BURIED BEHIND THE FUSE BOX, AND EXCESSIVE COST (>$300) TO REPLACE. I FEEL FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL, BECAUSE IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORD VEHICLES. APPARENTLY THE RELAY USED TO ENERGIZE THE HEADLIGHTS IN "AUTOMATIC " MODE IS NOT ABLE TO HANDLE THE CURRENT, AND I SUSPECT, BURNS OUT AND BECOMES UNABLE TO MAINTAIN THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT. THE AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT FEATURE, (WHEN IT WORKS) IS A GREAT SAFETY ADVANCEMENT, AS MANY DRIVERS FAIL TO TURN ON HEADLIGHTS AT DUSK, THEREFORE THE AUTOMATIC ON FEATURE GREATLY IMPROVES VISIBILITY OF ONCOMING VEHICLES AT DUSK AND EARLY EVENING. FORD IS AWARE THAT THEY HAVE A FIT PROBLEM WITH THE COWL AND AIR CABIN FILTER AREAS OF THESE CARS THAT CAUSE WATER TO LEAK ONTO THE FLOOR OF THE PASSENGER SIDE. THIS CAUSES CARPETS TO GET MOLDY/SMELLY. THE LEAK SOMETIMES ALLOWS WATER TO SHORT/RUIN THE BLOWER MOTOR. I BELIEVE RECALL NUMBER 03V087000 IS RELATED TO THIS ISSUE. OCCASIONALLY, AFTER HEAVY RAIN, THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR OF MY TAURUS WOULD BE SOAKED. THIS WENT ON FOR A FEW YEARS. DURING THE WINTER OF 2007, THE BLOWER MOTOR STOPPED FUNCTIONING DUE TO THE LEAK. WHEN THE BLOWER MOTOR STOPPED WORKING I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND COULD NOT DEFROST MY WINDOWS. THIS WAS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF THE SNOWY AND ICY CONDITIONS. NOT ONLY WAS I UNABLE TO DEFROST THE INSIDE OF MY WINDSHIELD, BUT I ALSO COULD NOT PREVENT ICE FROM FORMING ON THE OUTSIDE OF MY WINDSHIELD. IT WAS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND I HAD TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY. THE WINDOW COWL UNDER THE WINDSHIELD AND VARIOUS PARTS OF THE BLOWER MOTOR WERE REPLACED. THIS DID STOP THE LEAK. MY TAURUS IS A 2002, BUT I HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM IN THE 2000 TO 2005 MODELS. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE THAT NHTSA HAS NOT INVESTIGATED THIS AND ISSUED A RECALL. VEHICLE WAS RUNNING FINE. NEXT DAY, NO HEAT. I HAD A MECHANIC BACKFLUSH THE LINE AFTER WHICH I WAS ABLE TO GET SOME(VERY LITTLE) HEAT FOR ABOUT 1 MONTH JUST TO GET ME THROUGH THE WINTER. FOLLOWING YEAR, I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE BACKFLUSHED AGAIN. IN AUGUST 2006 VAPORS FROM THE AIR CONDITIONER OF MY 2002 FORD TAURUS ENTERED THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE FRONT VENTS AND IT STOPPED COOLING SHORTLY THEREAFTER. I WENT IN TO THE LANDERS-MCCLARTY FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR SHOULD NOT EVER NEED FREON AND THAT IT MAY BE A CHEAP OR EXPENSIVE REPAIR JOB AND I WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THE CAR OVERNIGHT. I COULD NOT LEAVE IT. SINCE SUMMER WAS ALMOST OVER, I DID NOT USE OF THE AIR CONDITIONER ANYMORE. I TURNED THE HEATER TO THE OFF POSITION AND STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN AND THE ENGINE STAYED ON. I TURNED THE HEATER BACK ON AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AGAIN. I TOOK THE CAR IT TO ANOTHER FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THAT TYPE OF PROBLEM BEFORE. MY BROTHER WENT TO USE THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER AND WHEN IT WAS DONE HEATING UP IT POPPED COMPLETELY OUT AND FELL UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT AFTER BOUNCING OFF THE CENTER CONSOLE. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER IS USED. ON MAY 15, 2011 I WAS USING MY 2002 FORD TAURUS TO RUN ERRANDS . AFTER DRIVING FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME I BECAME AWARE OF A STRANGE ODOR, ALL OF THE GAUGES APPEARED NORMAL, AND THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. HOWEVER, I WAS CONCERNED ENOUGH TO GET A SECOND OPINION. FORTUNATELY, THE FACILITY THAT NORMALLY SERVICES MY VEHICLE IS LOCATED LESS THAN 2 MILES FROM MY HOME. AFTER VISUALLY INSPECTING THE VEHICLE AND CHECKING ALL FLUIDS THE MECHANIC PROCEEDED TO TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE, ATTEMPTING TO DUPLICATE THE SMELL. THE CAR ONLY TRAVELED A SHORT DISTANCE BEFORE THE LEFT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. FURTHER INVESTIGATION, ON A LIFT, REVEALED A BROKEN LEFT REAR COIL SPRING. THE JAGGED END OF THE SPRING WAS PROTRUDING INTO THE INNER SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE, HAVING CAUSED IT TO RAPIDLY DEFLATE. THE MECHANIC THEN INFORMED ME THAT THE SMELL I EXPERIENCED WAS MOST LIKELY THE BROKEN SPRING RUBBING ON THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE. TO MY ASTONISHMENT I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT IT WAS A FAIRLY COMMON EVENT AND THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR FAILURE OF THE REMAINING 3 COIL SPRINGS. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE CONTINUED USE OF THIS VEHICLE, I AM WELL AWARE OF THE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SUDDEN DEFLATION OF A TIRE AT ROAD SPEED. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT FORD MOTOR COMPANY, BECAUSE I WAS ALSO TOLD BY MY MECHANIC THAT AT ONE TIME FORD HAD A RECALL AND A CAMPAIGN TO REMEDY SUCH A PROBLEM. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S POWER STEERING MODULATOR FAILED TWICE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER IN 03/04 WHO DETERMINED THAT THIS WAS AN ONGOING PROBLEM BECAUSE THE MODULATOR IS ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE INSTEAD OF THE FIREWALL WHICH CAUSES IT TO HEAT UP AND COOL DOWN WITH THE ENGINE. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT ENGINE VIBRATIONS DAMAGED THE MODULATOR, RESULTING IN POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKAGE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ON 07/25/06 WHO OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE VEHICLE AND A COMPLAINT WAS FILED.

2002 FORD TAURUS LAST MONTH I HAD TO REPLACE BOTH OF THE REAR SPRINGS LAST WEEK I HAD TO REPLACE THE RACK/PINION TODAY AS I JUST STARTED TO DRIVE FORWARD IN MY DRIVEWAY, THE FRONT RIGHT SPRING BROKE AND PIERCED THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE. I WAS GOING SO SLOW IN THE DRIVEWAY THAT THE SHARP EDGE OF THE BROKEN SPRING STARTED SLICING INTO THE TIRE AS IF A PERSON WERE PEELING AN APPLE. IT SCRAPED INTO THE TIRE UNTIL IT PIERCED THROUGH THE SIDEWALL. THANK HEAVENS THIS DID NOT HAPPEN AT 70MPH I HAVE READ ABOUT THE PRIOR RECALL INVOLVING THESE SAME PARTS ON THE 2001 AND EARLIER FORD TAURUS MODELS AND ON 2003 AND EARLIER FORD FOCUS MODELS WHICH USE THE SAME PARTS. HOW IN GOOD FAITH COULD YOU BELIEVE THAT THESE PARTS WERE GOING TO JUST DISAPPEAR FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH. FORD CONTINUED TO USE THESE PARTS UNTIL THEY WERE GONE AND JUST ROLLED THE DICE THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE CAUGHT BY YOUR AGENCY. THE RACK AND PINION WAS LEAKING AND UPON FURTHER INSPECTION IT TOO WAS FOUND TO BE BAD. AND AS I EXPLAINED ABOVE, I WAS DRIVING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AT APPROX 2 MPH AS I WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT 20' AS I HAD TO STOP AND PICK UP MY WIFE WHO HAD WALKED TO THE MAILBOX. I HAD A LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING TO BREAK ON MY 2002 FORD TAURUS WHILE I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND SLICED THE TIRE ALL THE WAY AROUND. IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS COLLISION, THE STRUTS WERE ALSO BAD WITCH COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. I STILL HAVE THE OLD PARTS. I REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PARTS MYSELF WITH PARTS THAT I GOT FROM ADVANCED AUTO PARTS. THE CAR ONLY HAD APPROXIMATELY 63,000 MILES ON IT. LATE SEPTEMBER EARLY OCTOBER I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM BOSCH ABOUT A RECALL ON BRAKE PADS I HAD GOTTEN FROM PEPBOYS. I WORK FOR A SCHOOL DISTRICT IN UTAH AND WE DO MOST OF THE WORK OUR SELF. SO I CALLED THEM AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD CALL BACK TO TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO FOR THIS RECALL. AFTER 2 WEEKS AND NO CALL, I CALLED THEM, THEY PUT ME ON HOLD AND NEVER GOT BACK. I CALLED AGAIN A FEW DAYS LATER AND WAS TRANSFERED TO A VOICE MAIL BOX THAT WAS FULL AND NOT TAKING MESSAGES. THIS CAR IS SITTING HERE FOR A MONTH AND WE ARE NOT ABLE TO USE IT BECAUSE OF THIS RECALL. THE SHIMS ON THE BACK OF THE PADS COMES OFF AND CUTS INTO THE ROTORS. AT 7:30 AM ON APRIL 29, 2011, I LEFT MY APARTMENT AND GOT INTO MY CAR TO DRIVE TO WORK. I TURNED ON THE IGNITION AND WENT TO BACK OUT AND IMMEDIATELY I HEARD A SCRAPING NOISE. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND NOTICED THE TIRE WAS COMPLETELY FLAT. I CALLED AAA AND THEY ARRIVED BY 8:00 AM AND THE GENTLEMAN REMOVED THE TIRE AND FOUND THAT IT WAS TORE IN HALF IN A SEMI-CIRCLE SHAPE. HE THEN LOOKED AT THE SPRING AND REALIZED THAT IT WAS COMPLETED BROKE IN HALF AS WELL. THE SPRING WAS COMPLETELY CRACKED AND WAS BROKEN OFF FROM THE TOP WHERE IT WAS MOUNTED AS WELL. HE THEN CALLED A TOW TRUCK TO COME, WHICH TOOK THE CAR TO A NEARBY MECHANIC TO REPAIR THE ISSUE.

JUST AS WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V332000 FOR THE 1999-2001 TAURUS, THREE OF THE FOUR COIL SPRINGS BROKE IN THIS 2002 TAURUS SHREDDING THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED AND FOUR NEW QUICK STRUTS, NEW FRONT STABILIZER LINKS, A NEW REAR SWAY BAR LINK, NEW FRONT RIGHT INNER AND OUTER TIE ROD ENDS, AND A NEW TIRE NEEDED TO BE INSTALLED. OWNER REPAIRED VEHICLE. MANUFACTURER UNWILLING TO REPAIR OR RECALL AT THIS TIME. FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,811.

MY DAUGHTER HAD AN ACCIDENT IN A 2002 FORD TAURUS SE WHERE SHE IMPACTED A CONCRETE BARRIER HEAD ON AND HARD ENOUGH TO TOTAL THE VEHICLE WHICH WAS OWNED AND INSURED BY ME. THE WORSE OF THE IMPACT WAS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT END. ONLY THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYED WITH NO ONE SEATED THERE, BUT HER DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY AT ALL. THIS RESULTED IN A CONCUSSION AND FACIAL LACERATIONS AND BRUISING WHEN HER FACE HIT THE STEERING WHEEL. THE SEAT BELT RESTRAINING SYSTEM FAILED TO ACT PROPERLY TO PROTECT HER FROM THIS INJURY. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD, BUT THEY DON'T CARE AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT THIS IS HOW IT IS DESIGNED TO WORK. SO IT'S ACCEPTABLE TO FORD THAT THEIR RESTRAINING SYSTEM ALLOWS INJURIES? I HOPE THAT SHE DOES NOT SUFFER FROM BRAIN TRAUMA AND I HOPE THAT THE WOUND HEALS WITH MINIMAL SCARING. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. DT*: THE CONSUMER STATED THE WINDSHIELD MAKES A POPPING NOISE WHEN COLD. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL, # 03V087000, REGARDING THE WINDSHIELD. THE VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL; HOWEVER, IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. ALSO, WHILE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT, A LOUD POP WAS HEARD. UPON INSPECTION, THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE WAS FLAT. THE SPARE TIRE WAS PUT ON AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE PASSENGER SIDE COIL SPRING BROKE CAUSING THE TIRE TO GO FLAT. BOTH FRONT COIL SPRINGS WERE REPLACED. *JB

IN THE SUMMER OF 2009 MY 2002 FORD TAURUS WAS TAKEN TO THE SHOP FOR BRAKE ISSUES. WHILE THERE, THE CAR'S BACK SPRINGS WERE FOUND TO BE BROKEN. TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM NEW PARTS WERE REQUIRED AND SUBSEQUENTLY BOUGHT AND REPLACED IN MY CAR. RECENTLY, IN THE PAST MONTH MY CAR STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE SUSPENSION AGAIN. I OWN A 2002 FORD TAURUS AND WHEN I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR BRAKE SERVICE MY MECHANIC DISCOVERED THAT 3 OF 4 COIL SPRINGS WERE BROKEN. THE LEFT REAR SPRING SPUN AND CUT A GOUGE IN A TIRE WITH LESS THAN 100 MILES ON IT. THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS ITEM SO FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE SPRINGS I WAS SOCKED WITH A $400 BILL. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND DISCOVERED THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THESE SPRINGS FOR SEVERAL YEARS. FORD HEATER AUTOMOBILE: FORD TAURUS, 2002, MILEAGE: 54,700 SUBJECT: DESIGN DEFECT, HEATER MOTOR INSTALLATION BACKGROUND: AIR INTAKE FOR THE HEATER AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM IS LOCATED BETWEEN THE HOOD AND THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. RAIN FLOWS INTO THIS AREA AND PASSES INTO THE HEATER DUCTING. SOME OF THIS WATER FLOWS INTO THE PLASTIC HOUSING FOR THE BLOWER MOTOR CAUSING EARLY FAILURE. POTENTIAL HAZARD: EARLY FAILURE OF THE MOTOR MAY RESULT IN THE INABILITY OF THE VEHICLE HEATING SYSTEM TO REMOVE CONDENSATION FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE WINDSHIELD. IN ADDITION, THE FAILURE OF THE HEATING SYSTEM DURING COLD WEATHER WOULD NOT MELT SNOW AND ICE THAT MAY ACCUMULATE ON THE WINDSHIELD. PROBLEM: THE BLOWER MOTOR IS LOCATED UNDER THE RIGHT HAND DASHBOARD HOUSED IN A MOLDED PLASTIC ASSEMBLY. THIS LOCATION IS ONE OF THE LOWEST POINTS IN THE HEATING SYSTEM THEREFORE WATER ACCUMULATES IN THE MOTOR HOUSING PLASTIC ASSEMBLY SUBMERGING THE REAR ONE-THIRD OF THE MOTOR IN WATER. THIS RESULTS IN EARLY FAILURE OF THE MOTOR DUE TO WATER CONTAMINATION, AS THERE IS NOT A PROVISION TO DRAIN WATER FROM THE PLASTIC HOUSING. COMMENTS: THIS IS A KNOWN ENGINEERING DEFECT AS FORD SEALED THE HOUSING WITH A RUBBERIZED COMPOUND TO PREVENT WATER FROM THE HEATING SYSTEM FLOWING ONTO THE FLOOR. CORRECTIVE ACTION: MANDATE FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO RECALL THE 2002 FORD TAURUS AND OTHER YEARS AND MODELS WITH A SIMILAR SYSTEM TO INSTALL A DRAIN IN THE HEATER MOTOR PLASTIC HOUSING IN ORDER TO DRAIN THE WATER FROM THE ASSEMBLY. I HAVE RETAINED THE FAILED BLOWER MOTOR AND PLASTIC ASSEMBLY FOR YOUR REVIEW, IF REQUIRED, IN ORDER TO OBSERVE THE RESULTS OF THIS DEFECTIVE DESIGN. THE MECHANIC ALSO PRINTED OUT A RECALL # 03V087000 ABOUT THE VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.

I PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR INTO PASSING GEAR TO GO AROUND A VEHICLE IN THE PASSING ZONE ON A HILL. WHEN I RELEASED THE ACCELERATOR THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AND ON TOPPING THE HILL WE WERE TRAVELING OVER 70 MPH. I TAPPED THE ACCELERATOR BUT ACCELERATION CONTINUED. COMING DOWN THE HILL I SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE ACCELERATED TO OVER 6000 RPM. I STOPPED ON LEVEL GROUND AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. ON RESTART, THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY REVVED TO OVER 6000 RPM AND A TRANSAXLE WARNING ICON APPEARED. BY ALTERNATELY SHIFTING IN AND OUT OF GEAR I JERKED TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP. THE MECHANICS KNEW THE PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY; BROKEN PLASTIC TABS HAD ALLOWED THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE SHEATH TO SLIP OUT OF THE THROTTLE CONNECTOR. THE CABLE SHEATH WAS JAMMED AGAINST THE EDGE OF THE CONNECTOR, HOLDING THE THROTTLE OPEN. WHEN THE SHEATH WAS REINSERTED INTO THE CONNECTOR, RPM RETURNED TO NORMAL. A SERVICE MAN AT THE MARIETTA FORD DEALER SAID CAR WAS DRIVEABLE. AND THAT THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AS THE BRAKE AND ACCELELRATOR PEDALS ARE CLOSE. WHEN THE DAMAGE REPAIRED IN ST. BOUGHT 2002 FORD TAURUS SEL FROM USED CAR LOT, HAD ABOUT 43,000+ MILES IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR LESS THAN A YEAR. IT PRESENTLY HAS 68,000 MILES (700 MILES DRIVEN WEEKLY), ALL HIGHWAY DRIVING. AT ABOUT 55,000 MILES ( I AM GUESSING), I STARTED HEARING A CLUNK. TODAY I WENT TO CHANGE THE BRAKES AND FOUND THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR SUSPENSION LOW TO THE TIRE. I CARRY NO WEIGHT IN THE CAR. I TOOK THE TIRE OFF TO FIND THE SPRING HAD SNAPPED AND COILED AROUND THE STRUT PERCH. THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN ABUSED OR MISTREATED. MY DAD PASSED AWAY JULY 7TH AND I WAS ATTEMPTING TO SEAL THE CAR WHEN A PROSPECTIVE BUYER MENTIONED THAT THE FAN WASN'T WORKING. I CHECKED IT OUT AND IT WORK SPORADICALLY. I ENDED UP TAKING IT TO HILLER FORD IN FRANKLIN WI AFTER TALKING TO FORD - THEY WANTED IT DIAGNOSED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BLOWER MOTOR, RESISTOR AND RAIN HAT WHICH COST $520. THE DAY OF MY DAD'S FUNERAL, THE BLOWER MOTOR ON MY CAR BEGAN TO WORK SPORADICALLY. I TOOK MY CAR TO HILLER FORD AND AUTHORIZED THE REPAIRS TODAY. THE ESTIMATE IS $429 TO REPLACE THE BLOWER MOTOR, RESISTOR AND A SEAL. THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER STATED THAT IT APPEARS THERE IS A LEAK IN THE POST FOR THE WINDSHIELD AND WATER WAS GETTING BEHIND THE DASH SOAKING THE BLOWER MOTOR UNIT. WHEN I CONTACTED FORD ON AUGUST 22, 2008, THEY CLAIM NEITHER CAR WAS SUBJECT TO THE 2003 WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID # 03V087000). I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT FORD IS OFFERING NO RELIEF BECAUSE THEY CLAIM THE CARS WEREN'T SUBJECT TO THE RECALL AND THE WINDSHIELD LEAK ISN'T RELATED TO THE BLOWER MOTOR GOING BAD. WHILE DRIVING WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL OFF. NORMAL ACCELERATION UP TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS, UPON RELEASING THE GAS PEDAL THE THROTTLE STUCK OPEN AND THE CAR WOULD NOT DECELERATE WITHOUT HEAVY BRAKING. PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND SHUT OFF ENGINE. DISCOVERED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD PUSHED ITSELF BACK OUT OF A LOCKING FERRULE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO HOLD IT IN PLACE WITH PLASTIC TABS, AND LODGED SIDEWAYS SO THE THROTTLE WAS BEING HELD OPEN. PUT THE CABLE BACK IN PLACE AND IT APPEARED TO BE PROPERLY SEATED BUT THE SAME THING HAPPENED TWICE MORE BEFORE I COULD GET THE VEHICLE HOME. THE PLASTIC TABS HAVE BECOME BRITTLE AND BROKEN AND NO LONGER PROPERLY HOLD THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE FERRULE TIGHTLY IN ITS SOCKET. I SEE NOW FROM INTERNET RESEARCH THAT I COULD HAVE COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED THE CABLE TO COMPLETELY ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEM. BUT IN THE DARK & COLD AND BEING UNFAMILIAR WITH THE MECHANICS OF THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE I DIDN'T HAVE THAT KNOWLEDGE AT THE TIME. UPON A BIT OF INTERNET RESEARCH I SEE THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON FAILURE MODE FOR THIS PARTICULAR PART ON 2001-2006 FORD TAURUS' AND OTHER FORDS THAT USE A SIMILAR MECHANICAL CRUISE CONTROL METHOD. THIS IS AN APPARENT PROBLEM WITH MANY OF THE FORD TAURUSES WHERE THE HEATER JUST STOPS WORKING. EACH TIME IT STOPS WORKING IT SEEMS TO COST OVER 2,000.00 TO FIX THE ISSUE. THE ACTUATOR MOTOR, THE HEATER CORE, AND THE BLOWER DOOR ALL CONTINUE TO BE AFFECTED. EVEN AFTER REPAIR IT SEEMS THAT IT WILL ONLY WORK FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR BEFORE IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED AGAIN. I LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND A BEIGE COLORED PLASTIC GUIDE FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD A CHIP OUT OF THE SIDE OF THE GUIDE ENTRY POINT SUCH THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE AND SHEATH WERE CAUGHT OUT OF ALIGNMENT IN THE SLOT OF THE CHIP IN THE GUIDE. I PULLED OUT, STRAIGHTENED AND RESET THE CABLE, SHEATH AND GUIDE AND, AGAIN STARTED THE ENGINE. PERFECT IDLE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IF IT WERE TO HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING! HOWEVER, I NOTICE THAT THE SMALL PLASTIC O-RING ON THE CABLE USED AS A STOP WAS CAUGHT ON THE CORNER OF THE AIR INTAKE HOUSING. I PULLED BACK ON THE CABLE RELEASING IT. DT: THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKES HAVE NOT OPERATED PROPERLY SINCE PURCHASE. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT SLOW DOWN WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. SHE MUST PUMP THE PEDAL REPEATEDLY, BUT THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. THE ROTORS AND PADS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP, AND THEY TOO WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. ALSO, THE CONTACT DETECTED FUMES COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE SAME REPAIR SHOP, AND THEY DETERMINED THE RADIATOR OVERFLOW TANK HAD A CRACK ON THE BOTTOM. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE. *AK

DT: THE CONTACT STATED THE HUB BEARINGS ON THE RIGHT WHEEL IN THE FRONT WERE BAD, HAD TO REPLACE THEM THREE TIMES. ON 8-22-05 A GARAGE TOLD THE CONTACT THE WHEEL WAS GETTING READY TO FALL OFF. THEY HAD NOT TAKEN IT BACK TO THE DEALER. SHE HEARD A NOISE LIKE A RUBBING , GRINDING SOUND AND THE NOISE GOT WORSE. THE NOISE OCCURRED AT SPEEDS OF 10 MPH AND ABOVE. ALSO THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS COMING ON, AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE FEEDBACK SENSOR TO THE ENGINE. *AK THE VEHICLE WOULD STALL WHILE BEING DRIVEN. THE DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL TANK AND PUMP. I HAVE A 2002 FORD TAURUS.. STARTING SHAKING WHILE DRIVING AT 8,500 MILES. TOOK IT TO FORD AND THEY STATED ROTORS WERE WARPED AND REPLACED THEM. AT APPROX 18,000 MILES THEY WARPED AGAIN. FORD WOULD NOT COVER THE WARRANT SO I ENDED UP PAYING TO HAVE THEM RESURFACED. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE AND ENDED UP GETTING REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR. I'M NOW AT 28,000 MILES AND THEY ARE SHOT, UNABLE TO BE RESURFACED AND MUST BE REPLACED. NEEDLESS TO SAY I'M NOT GOING TO DEAL WITH FORD ANY LONGER AND WILL REPLACE WITH A HIGHER QUALITY AFTER MARKET PRODUCT. I HAVE FOUND AND EXORBANENT AMMOUNT OF OTHER TAURUS OWNERS ONLINE THAT ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD LOOK INTO IT AND THE FEASABILITY OF ISSUEING A RECALL. FORD ISSUED A RECALL ON ITS 2002 FORD TAURAUS VEHICLES FOR UPDATING THE COMPUTER SYSTEMS. AFTER THE COMPUTER SYSTEMS WERE UPDATED I WAS TOLD THAT I NEED TO PURCHASE A NEW OXYGEN SENSOR TO KEEP THE LIGHT FROM COMING ON AGAIN. I ASKED IF THIS WAS A PART OF THE RECALL AND THE DEALERSHIP STATED NO THAT IS WAS SOMETHING DIFFERENT. WELL THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED ON MY FATHER-IN-LAWS 2002 FORD ESCAPE. I TOOK IT IN AND WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. I ASKED AGAIN IF IT WAS PART OF THE RECALL AND THEY ASSURED ME THAT IT WASNT. I THINK THEY ARE WRONG. WELL ABOUT A MONTH LATER THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING ON ITS ON AND JUMPING OUT OF GEAR. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AND ACCIDENT BUT THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS IN FRONT OF US AT THE TIME. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. WHEN EXITING THE FREEWAY THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD AND INCREASED IN SPEED. THE OWNER PUT BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES, YET THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO GO FORWARD. THE OWNER HAD TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF IN ORDER TO COME TO A STOP. *AK THE TRANSMISSION EXPERIENCED SHIFTING SLIPPAGE, A SLIGHT LEAK WAS FOUND IN THE BELL HOUSING AREA. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REMOVED AND THE CONVERTER FRONT HUB SEAL WAS LEAKING. THE SEAL WAS REPLACED ALONG WITH THE VALVE BODY PAN. THE ALARM WOULD SOUND WHEN NO ONE WAS NEAR THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE STARTED UNLESS THE ALARM WAS RESET. *SC *JB

SATURDAY NIGHT DEC 11, 2004, WHILE DRIVING ON ROUTE 91 IN CT, THE CAR LOST STEERING. THE CAR STARTED TO VEER RIGHT AND WHEN MY DAUGHTER (AND 2 SMALL CHILDREN) TRIED TO STEER THE WHEEL JUST TURNED AND TURNED WITH NO RESULTS. SHE ENDED UP NEXT TO A CEMENT WALL, WITH NO DAMAGE TO THE CAR, AFTER PUMPING THE BRAKES. THEY HAD TO CRAWL OUT OF THE WINDOW, BECAUSE OF THE POSITION OF THE CAR, WHEN THE TOW TRUCK CAME. A POLICE CRUISER STAYED BEHIND HER UNTIL THE TOW TRUCK GOT THERE. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE FORD DEALER THAT I BOUGHT IT FROM. THEY FOUND IT WAS WITH THE LINKAGE AND REPAIRED IT. I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT I STILL HAVE A STRANGE FEELING WHEN I DRIVE NOW. I GUESS THAT THEY FOUND A BOLT WAS LOOSE, REMOVED IT, CHECKED THE THREADS AND REINSTALLED IT. THE DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS A BAD RESISTOR AND REPLACED THE RESISTOR. TWO WEEKS LATER THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH WATER GETTING INTO THE BLOWER UNIT. HE WILL PUT IN A MODIFICATION AND REPLACED THE BLOWER UNIT. A WEEK LATER WE HAD BAD RAIN IN NEW ENGLAND AND THERE WAS AN INCH OF WATER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR. SEPT 18, 2001 WE PURCHASED A NEW 2002 FORD TAURUS. IN ONE DAY RADIATOR HOSE POPPED OFF. THIRTY DAYS AFTER THE FIRS REPAIR THE HOSE POPPED OFF AGAIN. THE DEALER WANTED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. ON 10-29-01 THE CAR STARTED TO MAKE A HISS NOISE AND SMOKE WOULD COME FROM THE FRONT END WHEN IT WAS PARKED OR TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER DIRKS MOTORS. THEY ASKED IF THE COULD REPLACE THE ENGINE AGAIN AND WE SAID NO. WE LEFT THE CAR AND THEY TOLD US THEY WOULD LET US KNOW BUT WE DID NOT HEAR NOTHING FROM THEM, WHEN WE WOULD CALL TO ASK THEM WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN THEY DID NOT KNOW AT ALL. ON 11-5-01 THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO US AND WITH LEAVING THE SERVICE CENTER AND NOT BEING LESS THEN 20 MILES FROM AKRON, IOWA THE CAR GOT HOT AND STARTED TO SMOKE AND I CALLED DIRKS SERVICE CENTER ON MY CELL PHONE AND TOLD THEM I WAS BRING IT BACK AND THIS TIME I WANTED THE CAR REPLACED NO QUESTIONS.. BUT THE CAR WAS TAKING BACK AND THEY LOOKED OVER IT AND THEY DID NOT CALL US AT ALL WHILE IT WAS IN SERVICE, WE CALLED EVERYDAY TO SEE IF THEY KNEW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT AND THE FUNNY THING ABOUT IT WAS THE CAR WAS AT DIRKS MOTOR INC FROM 11-5-01 TO 11-16-01 AND THEY COULD NOT FIND NOTHING WRONG. ON 11-16-01 THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE 4TH TIME THIS CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED AND IT WAS GETTING OLD.. ON 12-27-02 THE CAR STARTED THE HISSING NOISE AND SHORT CUTS ON AND THE CD PLAYER STOPPED WORKING AND THAT WAS IT.. I CALLED THE FORD COMPANY AT 1-800-392-3673. WHILE TALKING WITH THE CALL CENTER THEY CALLED DIRKS SERVICE CENTER AND EDU'D THEM TO HAVE THE CD PLAYER REPLACED AND LOOK AT THE ENGINE. THIS CAR HAS BEEN SERVICE FOR THE SAME ISSUE MORE THEN 3 TO 4 TIMES.. WE WANTED THE CAR REPLACED.... CAR WAS DRIVEN FOR APPROX. 100 MILES, GAS WAS LOW, SO STOPPED TO REFILL. WHEN CAR WAS RESTARTED, THE CAR HESITATED THEN SOUNDED CHOKED LIKE IT WAS NOT GETTING GAS. REVVED CAR TO TRY TO 'CLEAR' SYSTEM. PROBLEM CONTINUED, AT WORST WHEN IDLING. AFTER A FEW MINUTES, ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, SO I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND CALLED FORD DEALER. WRECKER DRIVER CAME OUT, REVVED CAR A FEW MORE TIMES (APPROX. 3000 RPM) SMALL BACKFIRE OUT OF MUFFLER EACH TIME. PROBLEM SEEMED TO GO AWAY. WRECKER DRIVER BLAMED 'BAFFLES' IN MUFFLER?
