TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1993 FORD TAURUS. ON MAY 30, 2007, THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE PARKED. THE CONTACT NOTICED BLACK SMOKE RISING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, WHICH LED TO THE VEHICLE BEING ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE LOT WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED SUSTAINED DAMAGE AS WELL AS THE ITEMS THAT WERE IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT HAS PICTURES AND CAN OBTAIN A COPY OF THE SHERIFF'S REPORT. THE VIN, ENGINE SIZE, AND PURCHASE DATE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 170,000.

PRIOR TO THIS INFORMATION, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FRONT END WAS LOWER THAN NORMAL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1993 FORD TAURUS. THE FRONT SUSPENSION FELL OUT WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE COIL SPRING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 98V094000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS). THE MANUFACTURER WAS UNABLE TO ASSIST. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 108,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. FIDDLED DESPERATELY WITH THE ON/OFF SWITCH & GOT THEM TO COME BACK ON. WENT OUT SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE NEXT 30 MINUTES ... DISCOVERED TURNING OFF AND BACK ON FIXED. SUSPECTED IT HAD TO DO WITH THE HEAT. OVER THE TWO MONTH, RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES AFTER DRIVING FOR 30 MINUTES OR SO. ALSO FOUND THAT USUALLY PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE SWITCH ITSELF AND JIGGLING WOULD BRING THEM BACK, AND DISCOVERED I COULD HOLD THE HIGH BEAMS ON. FINALLY SEARCHED HERE AND FOUND 98V009000, WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE SAME PROBLEM. HAVE CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALER ... IN JULY OF 2000 I HAD RECALL WORK DONE ON MY CAR, A 1993 FORD TAURUS. THE RECALL WAS TO PREVENT A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE ENGINE SUB FRAME. THE RECALL WAS TSB #98S36. ON JULY 15, 2004 I EXPERIENCED THAT MAJOR FAILURE OF THE ENGINE SUB FRAME, LOOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS LOSS OF CONTROL WAS DUE TO THE SUBFRAME PLATE CORROSION THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PREVENTED BY THE RECALL 98S36. I GOT THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER (GREENWAY FORD, ORLANDO FL.). THEY REFUSED TO HONOR THE RECALL BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN DONE ONCE. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH NO RESULTS. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT A RECALL FOR A CORRODING PLATE SHOULD BE A ONE TIME PERMANET FIX. IF RECALL WORK CANNOT BE DONE TWICE, THEN A SECOND RECALL IS IN ORDER. *AK

SUSTAINED AIRBAG BURNS - LOWER FACE/CHIN, ALL ACROSS CHEST/BREASTS; RIGHT HAND BRUISED, SWOLLEN BETWEEN 2ND & 3RD KNUCKLES. *NO* DAMAGE TO CAR, OTHER THAN AIRBAG DEPLOYING. MY OPINION REGARDING AIRBAGS SHIFTED 180 DEGREES; JUST WANT MY CAR'S AIRBAGS DISABLED, BUT TOLD THAT'S ILLEGAL (AT LEAST IN CA). SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DRIVE AFRAID OF AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT & INJURY OR EVEN DEATH, WITHOUT ANY SAY IN THE MATTER. THE SPRING THAT THAT OPERATES THE BUTTON TO LOCK AND UNLOCK THE BELTS BROKE AND YOU CANNOT USE SEAT BELTS BECAUSE THE LATCH WILL NOT HOLD THE BUCKLE AS YOU FTRY TO LOCK IT ON. WHEN I WENT TO FORD ABOUT THIS, THEY SAID IT WAS NOT A RECALL ITEM AND THAT THEY COULD NOT REPLACE THEM. I HAD TO PURCHASE A COMPLETE SET OF SIX NEW LATCHES FOR THE CAR AS THEY DID NOT SELL INDIVIDUAL LATCHES. THIS IS CRAZY AS A SEAT BELT IS A MANDATORY SAFETY ITEM AND IN NY YOU WILL RECEIVE A POLICE SUMMONS FOR NOT WEARING THEM. THIS ITEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY FORD AT NO CHARGE. I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED OCCURRANCE AS MY EX-WIFE HAS A 1989 TAURUS AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND SHE HAD THE SAME RESULTS WITH FORD. WE BOTH HAD TO PURCHASE FULL SETS OF SEAT BELT LATCHES TO REPLACE INOPERATIVE FRONT ONES. THIS CERTAINLY SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FORD TO PROVIDE SAFETY EQUIPMENT THAT IS MANDATORY TO USE. I SUBMITTED INFORMATION TWO DAYS AGO. I DON'T KNOW IF IT WENT THROUGH OR NOT. IN CASE NOT, I STARTED HAVING HEATING PROBLEMS LAST YEAR AND AFTER REPLACING HEATING COMPONENTS,IE, RADIATOR, TWO THERMOSTATS, TWO HEATING SENSING UNITS, WATER PUMPAND HEAT GUAGE. IT KEPT RUNNING HOT TO THE POINT I WAS SCARED IT WOULD RUIN MY MOTOR. I NEVER RAN IT TO THE BOILING POINT. I FINALLY LEFT IT WITH MY MECHANIC AND AFTER MANY CHECK, HE FINALL FOUND FAULTY HEAD GASKETS WITH A GAS ANALIZER. I HAD THE GASKETS AND NECESSARY COMPONENTS REPLACED. IT IS NOW BACK TO NORMAL. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY MORE PROBLEMS. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO KNOW WHY MR. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE WITH ALMOST EVERYTHING POSSIBLE ON THIS CAR. THE HEAD GASKET FAILED WITH NO WARNING, NO OVERHEATING - CAR WOULD NOT START, HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER WHO INFORMED THAT HEAD GASKET HAD BLOWN. HEAD GASKET FAILED AGAIN 7 MONTHS LATER. HAD TROUBLE WITH SURGING, RACING ENGINE FROM ABOUT 25000 MILES, DEALER COULD NOT FIND PROBLEM. FINALLY, REPLACED SPEED SENSOR WHEN OUT OF WARRANTY, AND IT FAILED AGAIN 4 MONTHS LATER. HAVE HAD TIE RODS AND BALL JOINTS REPLACED, MOTOR MOUNTS REPLACED TWICE, BRAKE PROBLEMS STARTING AT 24,000 MILES. THE AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR CAME APART WHILE UNDER WARRANTY. THE COOLING FAN IS NOW STICKING, WHICH STARTED AT 65000 MILES.MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THIS PART IS NOTORIOUS FOR GOING BAD, AND THAT SO MANY HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACE, THE PRICE OF THE PART HAS GONE DOWN. I FEEL THE 1993 3.8L TAURUS MODELS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL, AS WELL AS THE COOLING FANS, AND I SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR THE COST OF REPAIRS. THIS CAR HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE, HAS NOT BEEN ABUSED, AND SHOULD NOT BE COSTING ME SO MUCH TO DRIVE. ON SATURDAY 05/27/2000 WHEN DRIVING AWAY FROM A PARKING LOT I NOTICED THE CAR WAS IDLING VERY ROUGH, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WAS PEGGED AT THE H, AND SMOKE WAS COMING OUT THE TAILPIPE. I PARKED THE CAR AND HAD IT TOWED TO ANOTHER INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP NEAR MY HOME. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE HEAD GASKET HAD BLOWN AGAIN. THE REPAIR BILL IS POSSIBLY GOING TO BE BETWEEN $1100 - $1500. BOTH INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOPS INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 1993 TAURUS 3.8 V6 ENGINE. WINDSHIELD WIPERS DON'T WORK REGULARLY. THEY WORK IN SOME SETTING INTERMITTENTLY. WHEN YOU TURN THEM ON YOU SOMETIMES HAVE TO PLAY WITH THE SWITCH TO FIND A DECENT SETTING. WE HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE CAR RUNNING ROUGHLY, DYING AT STOPS, WORSE IN WET WEATHER, LURCHING AT STOPS IF NOT DYING AND IT SOMETIMES DIES WHEN SLOWING DOWN FROM HIGHWAY SPEEDS TO BELOW 30 MPH. MY FATHER IS A RETIRED NYC TRANSIT AUTHORITY MECHANIC, AND HE WAS METICULOUS ABOUT THE UPKEEP OF HIS VEHICLES. NOW I AM FACE WITH AN AUTOMOBILE THAT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A HUGE PAPERWEIGHT.OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS IT SEEMS THAT I WAS JUST THROWING GOOD MONEY AFTER BAD. A COUPLE OF HUNDRED HERE, $700 FOR A COMPLETE OVERHAUL OF THE A/C SYSTEM, ETC. I DO NOT HAVE THE CASH TO SPEND APPROXIMATELY $1300 ON REPAIRS. FORD SAID THE DEALER SHOULD REIMBURSE US THE BALANCE, AND THE DEALER SAID THAT FORD SHOULD REIMBURSE US. GUESS WHAT, EXCEPT FOR THE $60, WE NEVER GOT REIMBUSED THE ADDITIONAL $300. I AM AT WITS END. RT FROUNT LOWER CONTROLL ARM ASSEMBLY- FROM MILEAGE OF APPROX. 63000 TO PRESENT, 112,000, THE LOWER CONTROLL ARM ASSEMBLY HAS HAD TO BE REPALCED 3 TIMES AND RETORKED 1. I ALSO HAD TO PAY FOR REALIGNMENT AT EACH REPAIR. NOW AFTER THE 3RD REPLACEMENT THE CAR SHIMMIES AND PULLES TO THE LEFT, WHICH IT DID NOT DO BEFORE REPAIR. THE DEALER MORE OR LESS TOLD ME TOO BAD. WHERE DO I START, THIS CAR HAS BEEN A MONEY PIT FROM DAY ONE! THE BRAKES HAD TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED 3 DAYS AFTER WE BOUGHT THE CAR--SIGNATURE FORD CLAIMED IT WAS ARE FAULT AFTER SOME ARGUMENT THEY FINALLY REIMBURSED US FOR THE BRAKES. WE DISCOVERED A SMALL LEAK, WE FOUND IT TO BE COMING FROM THE HEATER HOSE. WE DECIDED TO TRUST SIGNATURE FORD, THEY CLAIMED THAT WE NEEDED A NEW HEATER HOSE, WATER PUMP AND RADIATOR. WE TOOK ARE CAR BACK TO THE FIRST MECHANIC WHO LOOKED AT IT AND HE SWORE THAT THOSE THINGS WERE NOT LEAKING WHEN THEY LEFT HIS SHOP, NO PROOF THOUGH SO WE HAVEN'T FILED A COMPLAINT AGAINST SIGNATURE FORD. WE HAVE SINCE REPLACED THE HEATER HOSE AND WATER PUMP. WE ARE TAKING THE RADIATOR IN TO BE CHECKED OUT VERY SOON. WE HAD THE STARTER REPLACED AT SIGNATURE FORD, SINCE IT WAS FIXED THE KEYLESS ENTRY STOPPED WORKING. WE'VE HAD THE BRAKES COMPLELY FIXED, THREE TIMES. WE HAVE HAD THE OXYGEN SENSORS REPLACED. THE AIRCONDITIONER WILL NOT WORK, WE WERE TOLD THAT WE NEED A NEW COMPRESSOR AND CLUTCH. THERE IS A SHORT THAT CAUSES A FUSE TO BLOW, RESULITING IN LOSS OF GAUGES. ONE OF THE BACK WINDOWS WILL NOT WORK. THE MOLDING AROUND SAID WINDOW DOES NOT FIT PROPERLY. THE POWER STEERING MAKES A STRANGE NOISE AND SOMETIMES DOES NOT SEEM TO BE WORKING; WE TOOK IT IN TO SIGNATURE WHILE UNDER WARRANTY AND WERE TOLD THAT IT WAS FINE. WHEN WE FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR THE TIRES THAT WERE ON IT WERE TOO BIG RESULTING IN EXCESSIVE WEAR. THE CURRENT TIRES SHOW SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE WEAR ON THE INSIDE FRONT PASSANGER TIRE. THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN TOTALLY REBUILT, THE TECH. WHO FIXED IT SAID THAT THIS IS TYPICAL OF SHO'S. THE FOG LIGHTS SOMETIMES FAIL. THE LAMP OUT LIGHT COMES ON EVEN WHEN NO LAMP IS OUT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON SOMETIMES DURING ACCELERATION. THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT COMES ON AND GOES OFF AT VARIOUS TIMES. THIS SWITCH OPERATES THE HIGH BEAMS, WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND TURN SIGNALS. WINSHIELD WIPER MOTOR ALSO NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. FRONT SWAYBAR LINKS ALSO REPLACED AT 71,000 WHEN NOTICED A BUCKLING SOUND WHEN DRIVING OVER ROAD IRREGULARITIES. I UNDERSTAND FROM OTHER TAURUS OWNERS THAT THE FRONT SUSPENSION IS A WEAKNESS.

TRANSMISSION - SHORTLY AFTER WE GOT THE VEHICLE, AT LOW SPEEDS 10-15 MPH, THE VEHICLE STARTED LURCHING WHEN TRYING TO SHIFT. THIS PROGRESSED TO WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS 55-65 MPH, THE VEHICLE DOWNSHIFTED SUDDENLY AND VIOLENTLY, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STOP ABRUPTLY ON A BUSY INTERSTATE, WHICH ALMOST CAUSED A REAR END MULTIPLE CAR COLLISSION. TOOK THE CAR TO 2 DIFFERENT TRANSMISSION PEOPLE, AND THEY SAID THE TAURUS' TRANSMISSION IN ALL VEHICLES IS DEFECTIVE IN THAT IT IS MADE SO THAT THE TRANSMISSION OIL CANNOT GET TO ALL THE PARTS CAUSING BREAKDOWN. THEY BOTH SAID I SHOULD GET RID OF THE VEHICLE AS EVEN IF I PUT A NEW TRANMISSION IN THE VEHICLE, THE NEW ONES ARE MADE EXACTLY THE SAME AND THE SAME PROBLEM WILL HAPPEN. ON NHTSA COMPLAINT DIVISION, I FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION, YET THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL. BECAUSE I GOT THE VEHICLE WITH 70000 MILES ON IT, FOR ALL I KNOW THE VEHICLE COULD BE ON ITS 3RD OR 4TH TRANSMISSION. I INQUIRED ABOUT GETTING A USED TRANSMSSION, AND BOTH REPAIR MEN LAUGHED AND SAID GOOD LUCK, EVERY TAURUS STILL OPERATING HAS HAD OR NEEDED A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT AND THUS THERE ARE NO USED TRANSMISSIONS AVAILABLE. THE CAR BUCKS AND JERKS CONSTANTLY AND VIOLENTLY EVEN AT LOW SPEEDS AND BECAUSE OF THE ABRUPT DOWNSHIFT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, WE NO LONGER FEEL SAFE, AND SO DO NOT DRIVE IT ON THE HIGHWAY. THE WINDOW SHIELD WIPERS FAIL AT THE WORST TIMES - SUCH AS DURING A DOWNPOUR WHEN YOUR'RE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT NIGHT, THEY WILL COMPLETELY STOP WITH NO WARNING, MAKING VISIBILITY IMPOSSIBLE TO EVEN GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOP. I ALSO FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF THIS ON THE NHTSA COMPLAINT SITE, YET NO RECALL HAS BEEN MADE ON THIS.
