I have had this 2012 for a little over a year, within the past 6 months periodically the check air bag system warning lamp comes on if I make a sharp turn or move the steering wheel very fast. On the guage it says that the passenger side air bag is off..This issue just came out of no where, but generally the car runs great

I was 3 hrs away from home and I started my vehicle and the air bag light began flashing and beeping. The light was on the message board that indicates my speed, clock, fuel, etc. it basically is the information center for the car. I pushed the information button on the steering wheel to clear it but it kept blinking and flashing the entire way home. I also turned off the engine and restarted it but no luck with that either. It was a very distracting experience having to drive 3 hours like this. I made an appointment with my mechanic and he diagnosed it as the Occupant Passenger Detection Sensor. This will cost $800.00 to repair. The car is not drive able in this condition because of the safety of the air bag. I looked up recalls but it seems my car has none.

My airbag warning light comes on intermittently. When the light is on, the airbags are non-functional. It comes on at various times while driving, and at various speeds. The official diagnosis is a flaw in the "internal resistance in driver's airbag inflator." This is a well-established problem in this model, and Honda offers extended warranty coverage for the passenger side airbag for this problem. Yet Honda refuses to take any responsibility or action for the drivers side with the same issue. Numerous other manufacturers have issued recalls or other corrective action for the same part.

We were making a left turn, and a SUV ran the red light across the street and ran through the intersection hitting us broadside at about 45 mph. We were traveling at about. 20-30 mph as we were going to the freeway onramp and had to get to speed. The SUV impact was by the front passenger side tire or just after. The impact was hard enough to bend the subframe to the left. The side air bags did not inflate. We have always had issues with the child safety sensor in the front passenger seat, could that have been the reason? The passenger in the seat was about 105 -110 lbs. and hit the door panel and glass as a result of the air bags no deploying. The hit was bad enough it killed the engine and the frame damage further disabled it.

Like others, I have had an airbag warning light appear intermittently. Apparently, my VIN is affected by this even though this and Honda's website indicates there are 0 recalls for my car. Dealership informed me that this indeed is a recall issue.

This is a serious matter that needs to be evaluated as it is a potentially fatal safety issue for human drivers of 2012 Honda Civic. This email needs to be sent please to the Department of Transportation and the National Transportation Safety Board for evaluation of extension of recall: meaning other 2012 Honda Civic vehicles that have the same type or similar area of issues as the two above stated recalls and from the same manufacturer as the 2012 Honda Civic vehicles but whose VIN were not included in the group of VIN numbers in the original recalls) a. 2019 - control arm bushings cracked - cause: leaking - front lower arm compliance bushings, both replaced by Honda( documention available upon request) b. 2019- right front tire shred and upon inspection by Goodyear no nail or issue could be found for the one right front tire shredding. (documentation and images available upon request) c. 2022- right front tire shreds while driving and upon inspection by Goodyear no nail or issue could be found for the right front tire behavior. (documentation and images available upon request) d. 2024-right front control arm mount and right control arm failure while driving causing the vehicle to be a total loss including from collateral damage. It happened at a low speed but if it happened at a higher speed it would have been potentially fatal. Corporate American Honda made aware and Corporate American Honda made aware this is to be reported to the Department of Transportation and Corporate American Honda response was that they were taking no action to the situation of the request for evaluation of extension of recall, besides just collecting the information I was reporting to them due per Corporate American Honda to it potentially costing Corporate Honda money and that they American Corporate Honda were willing to wait the couple of months that it could potentially take for the Department of Transportation to evaluate. Police report was taken, but I do not have a copy.

When my car reaches speeds above 60mph the steering is difficult to control (a lot of Play in the steering wheel). I took my vehicle in to a Monrovia, CA Honda Dealer in May 2024 to fix the issue. The dealer replaced the bushings but did not fix the steering issue. This vehicle feels dangerous. I noticed on the internet there are a lot of mechanics talking about steering issues in the model years that my car is under. I am frustrated that the Honda dealers don’t seem to want to fix this issue. I’ve already paid a great deal of money in up keep and the problem has not been corrected. I have had no warning lamps or signs of leaks just a lot of play in the steering wheel and lack of control.I don’t feel safe on the highway in this vehicle.

Power Steering suddenly failed after I stopped for a stop sign. The EPS light was not on prior to stopping but came on after the steering failed. Managed to get to the nearest Honda Dealer and was told they wouldn't touch it. Managed to get to a local repair shop who looked up the issue and reset some code(s). They told me it could happen again at any time. This is an extremely dangerous problem that could cause serious damage or death if it occurred while driving. I can't understand why Honda hasn't figured out a solution and issued a recall.

Owns a 2012 HONDA Civic Hybrid. While driving ~30MPH, the IMA/braking/engine/charging/ABS lights illuminated. The car still driving but the hybrid system fails. Also, when starting the engine it switches to using the starter instead of the EV motor. The 12V battery will not charge and die soon, which increases the risk of a stall on the road, thus leading to a crash. The vehicle was taken to a Honda Dealer which suggests a Model Power Inverter failure. There is a Technical Service Bulletin: 20-030 (Warranty Extension: 2012-15 Civic Hybrid IMA Motor Power Inverter) related to the failing parts, however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The vehicle was not prepared. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000 miles.

The bluetooth Microphone screeches for the people on the other end of the call. I cannot hear it. It was replaced once under warranty, however my car is no long under warranty and it is doing it again. there are bulletins about this issue, but no recalls as it's not a safety issue. just a money issue.

The contact owns a 2012 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated or stalled while depressing the accelerator pedal. The “Check Emission Systems" message was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact then received notification from the Manufacturer for Honda Service Bulletin: 19-106. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where a PCM update was performed. Recently, the contact stated that the "Check Emission Systems" message returned, and the vehicle hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal. The dealer was notified of the failure and provided the cost for a diagnostic test. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact was provided with a case number. The contact was also informed that dealers were independently owned and could not be forced to repair the vehicle under the service bulletin. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 211,000.

While driving, my 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid suddenly loses power and steering ability. The vehicle stalls and the steering wheel locks up, making it impossible to safely maneuver. This has happened multiple times, including in traffic, creating a serious risk of collision. When the failure occurs, warning lights illuminate on the dashboard, including the IMA light, anti-lock brake light, and others. In some cases, all dash lights flash before the car stalls. When scanned with an OBD tool, the vehicle shows power inverter-related fault codes. The symptoms are consistent with the IMA motor power inverter defect described in Honda Recall H98 (2012–2015 Civic Hybrid inverter recall). However, my VIN does not currently show as part of that recall. Despite this, the vehicle is clearly experiencing the same safety defect. This defect causes sudden loss of propulsion and steering assist, placing myself, passengers, and other drivers at serious risk. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

The contact stated that while exiting a parking structure, the vehicle failed to accelerate, the steering column started to fail, and the vehicle began to make an abnormal sound coming from the front driver’s side. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed as having a shredded C-axle and transmission failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

I TOOK TO THE DEALER 3X PRIOR TO THE WARRANTY EXPIRING AND THEY 'COULDN'T DUPLICATE IT' IT'S SO LOUD, A PEDESTRIAN STANDING ON THE SIDEWALK NEXT TO A ROAD CAN HEAR IT. Paint defect. Paint faded and clouded on vehicle due to cheap paint used during manufacturing. I was never notified about the extended warranty. I contacted Honda and let them know, but was told the warranty ended. I financed my vehicle through American Honda for 5 years, and serviced my vehicle via Honda dealerships. Never did this come up as a possible repair that I could have fixed by them. I was told that Honda used a third party to contact owners.

There is a "metal" splash guard (approx. 2ft x 2ft) under the engine that is secured by 4 steel bolts/screws and steel U-Clips. If the metal splash guard falls off it could puncture the gas tank, cut gas and brake lines or take someone's head off. This guard is more than just a piece of thin tin. The Bolts/Clips secure the metal guard to the remaining "plastic" splash guard under the rest of the car (metal probably needed for engine heat reasons). I noticed the missing metal plate after a Honda Dealer's oil change. I thought that they might have accidently forgotten to replace it after the oil change, but was told that was not the case (I got the impression that it was not uncommon for these metal splash guards to fall off). The oil filter and drain plug access requires removal of this metal plate during service. My metal plate fell off due to rusted through bolts/screws because 3 of the metal clips stayed in place and were very rusted. The dealer replacement parts were expensive, something like >> bolts-clips $10 x 4 = $40 plus approx $30 for the metal plate $70 total. Honda had to order the metal plate to be delivered later. Once the plate arrived at the Dealership they contacted me and I went to them, where they replaced the plate for free, but to add insult to injury, the Honda technician used two plastic zip ties instead of steel bolts and clips because they didn't have enough of the correct bolts/clips (should be secured by 4 steel bolts/clips). They never bothered to tell me about the zip ties and I only found out a few days later after looking under my car. I found similar bolts/clips at a Home Depot store and, on a return trip to the Honda Dealer, had Honda replace the 2 zip ties and Honda's 2 bolts/clips with 4 new "Stainless Steel" bolts/S.S. washers and 4 new steel U-Clips (I could not find Stainless Steel U-Clips).

Paint on the Vehicle is chipping off and getting oxidized. It started happening an year ago and its never ending. We are able to see the patches almost everywhere on the body of the car.

THE LATCH HAS FAILED WITH ONLY 80,000 MILES AND THE OFFICIAL POSITION OF AMERICAN HONDA IS GO SCREW YOURSELF THE CAR IS A 2012 AND HAS A SALVAGED TITLE BUT IT NEVER HAD A SALVAGED TITLE AND THEY LIE AND NEVER PROVIDED US ANY WARRANTY SERVICES EVER. HONDA WONT FIX HOOD LATCH THAT FAILS TO OPEN AND NOW HAS ASKED FOR A COPY OF MY NORMAL STATE TITLE SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE THE STATE MAKE IT A SALVAGED TITLED IN ERROR. THEY ARE DIRTY. THEY HAVE NEVER HONOR ANY WARRANTY ON THE CAR AND HAVE SAID IT IS A SALVAGE TITLE WHEN I BOUGHT IT NOT AS SUCH A VEHICLE THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIPS HAVE RIPPED US OFF...PLEASE REFER TO CONSUMER PROTECTION BUREAU TOO

2012 HONDA CIVIC EX. SEAL COAT FAILURE, MOSTLY ON ROOF WITH SOME PAINT PEELAGE ON DOOR HANDLE AND SPOILER ALSO. THIS STARTED 2 1/2 YEARS AGO AND IS GETTING PROGRESSIVLEY WORSE. HONDA WILL NOT RECTIFY THE ISSUE ALTHOUGH THEY ARE AWARE OF PAINT DEFECTS AND HAVE COVERED A FEW MODELS BUT NOT ALL MODELS AFFECTED.

I HAVE A 2012 HONDA CIVIC LX, IT HAS INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. IT OCCURRED TWICE ON THE HIGHWAY AND ALSO URBAN AREA. JUST THIS MORNING, IT HAPPENED AGAIN I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I NOTICED THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATES AND SPEEDS UP WITHOUT STEPPING THE GAS PEDAL. FORTUNATELY THE BRAKES RESPONDED TO SLOW DOWN. I CAME OUT OF THE HIGHWAY, AND I HAD TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT BUT STILL IT WAS A CONSTANT FIGHT ACCELERATION BY ITSELF AND STEPPING ON THE BRAKE UNTIL THE CAR WILL OPERATE NORMALLY.

I WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR TRIED TO ACCELERATE EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT WAS FIRM ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. I HAD TO "STAND" ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND I IMMEDIATELY SHIFTED INTO PARK. THE ENGINE REACHED A VERY HIGH RPM UNTIL I JIGGLED THE ACCELERATION PEDAL. THEN THE ENGINE ACTED NORMALLY. THE ECO WAS NOT ENGAGED AND THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT ENGAGED. MILEAGE IS 40,078 MILES.

Driving around town, I stopped our 2012 Honda Civic at a stoplight. The brake pedal vibrated from the ABS modulator, then went all the way to the floor. I had the brake system checked at a workshop, bled the brake lines, and the same situation repeated. It was recommended I replace the brake modulator and brake pump. I called our Honda dealer and the brake pump is on hard backorder with no indication of when or if it will be available. A check of junkyards showed very few of these pumps potentially available, indicating demand is very strong. Many of the Civics in the junkyards we saw were totalled due to front end collissions. Perhaps they discovered the brake issue too late? The car is not driveable. After reviewing forums and [XXX] there were many reports of brake problems with 2012 - 13 Honda Civics. I believe this warrants a close look. Brakes are the most important part of any motor vehicle in my opinion, and until there is a remedy my car will sit as a 3,000 lb paperweight. ABS Control Module leads fell off. The 2012 Honda Civic has a sealed ABS/VSA control module. This module has leads connected with rigid solid core cables that are known to disconnect and fall off due to natural heat and vibration. This happened with my vehicle. The vehicle lost acceleration, power steering, dash lights, and power breaking on the highway. When I attempted to restart it all of my lights came on: charging system, VSA, ABS, Power Steering, and Power Breaking. While driving at about 40 mph the car suddenly started to pull toward the left. I pressed on the brake pedal as I steered to the right to try to bring the car back to my lane but I noticed the brake pedal was already very hard. In a second the car skidded out of control toward the right side of the road and it slammed its left side against some big rocks. The driver's door window broke and the side airbags deployed. The big rocks kept us from going into the water of a lake that the road runs next to. The passengers in the car were myself and my wife and were not injured but it was a very terrifying incident and the consequences could have been a lot worse. The vehicle has been released to Progressive, the Insurance Company.

The parking brake control knob has broken off and parking brake can not be released without inserting a long object into release button. If I engage the parking brake it is stuck in that position and car will not move. If I don't engage the parking brake then there is no parking brake. If parking on an incline, it is a struggle to move out of park. An independent service center has tried to order a replacement part. Honda says there is not replacement part. There are no warning lights.

I AM EXPERIENCING VERY RAPID REAR BRAKE PAD WEAR ON MY CIVIC. IT IS A 2012 MODEL, AND IS DRIVEN QUITE NORMALLY AS A COMMUTER VEHICLE TO AND FROM WORK DAILY. IN 2015 AT ABOUT 60K MILES, THE REAR PADS WERE WORN TO 0%. I WAS SURPRISED, BUT REPLACED THEM THEN. JUST RECENTLY, AT ABOUT 80K MILES, I AM JUST HAD MY MECHANIC REPORT THEY'RE BACK DOWN TO ABOUT 10% LIFE AND NEEDING REPLACEMENT SOON. THIS IS UNNATURALLY FAST, IS EXPENSIVE, AND UNSAFE AS MECHANICS AND CONSUMERS ARE USED TO REAR BRAKES WEARING MUCH MORE SLOWLY THAN FRONT BRAKES. IN THE SAME PERIOD OF TIME, THE FRONT BRAKES ARE STILL THE ORIGINAL PADS, AND ARE SHOWING ABOUT 35% LIFE REMAINING - THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN REPLACED. I'VE READ AROUND ON FORUMS ONLINE, AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A RECURRING PROBLEM FOR OTHER CIVIC OWNERS.

It has happened more than once since 3 years ago. If I’m running my AC in the car, when I accelerate the car will skip/jump. It’s extremely expensive to repair and the problem isn’t even getting fixed. I basically can’t run my AC if it’s hot outside

THERE IS A LEAK FROM MY GAS TANK. CAR IS IN GOOD CONDITION. TOOK TO GET A DIAGNOSTIC RAN AND THERE IS NO RAMAGE, RUST, RODANT CHEWING, OR PUNCTURE. IT IS LEAK FROM THE TANK/ WHERE THE CONNECTOR VALVE IS. MY CAR WAS STATIONARY FROM THURSDAY EVENING UNTIL 3 PM ON FRIDAY IN MY PARKING SPOT BEHIND THE HOUSE. GOING OUT OT MY CAR I TURNED IT ON, FINISHED PUTTING MY THINGS IN THE TRUNK. PRECEDED TO GET INTO THE CAR AND I SMELLED GAS EVEN STRONGER. When starting from a stopped position, there is a squeal when letting out the clutch. I took it back to the dealership 3x and they couldn't duplicate it. Apparently it is a known issue as there are bulletins on it. It happens almost every time, especially on a slight incline.

So on 11/6/19 Silko Honda Raynham, MA worked on my car for recall {campaign recall 19-106 6bd00- 2012 civic cold emissions gas reduction) So ever since this update on my computer I had non stop tightening gas cap which has been replaced with dealer cap did not work, and when the gas cap light goes out then get check emissions light does this non stop between both lights throughout the day everyday, I've had every single thing fixed that says with the code I get from check engine light nothing works but it passes inspection all I can think of is computer update only thing makes since .Also had 3 smoke test to comes back no leaks. the code I get is this P0497,p145c it has 7 things to do to resolve code which are 1)reconnection of hoses 2)wiring replacement 3)vacuum 4)charcoal canister replacement 5)canister purge valve replacement 6)gas cap replacement 7)clearing of codes and retesting with scan tool to ensure the problem is fixed. 2012 CIVIC SEAT ISSUE - I HAD A 2008 CIVIC COUPE. THIS CAR WAS GREAT. THE SEAT, FOR ME WAS VERY COMFORTABLE. The contact pulled over and parked the vehicle, and became aware that there was fuel leaking onto the ground. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the fuel line needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. IT WAS THEN WHEN THEY SAID I SHOULD HAVE NEVER DRIVEN THIS CAR SO FAR AWAY, THE WHEEL BEARINGS WERE IN PRETTY BAD SHAPE. MY HUSBAND AND I WROTE A LETTER TO HONDA, ASKING THAT BETTER TRAINING WAS OFFERED TO EMPLOYEES GIVING WRONG ADVICE AND INSISTING WE HAD TO GET USED TO THE NOISE INSTEAD OF CARING FOR OUR SAFETY, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED AND WE NEVER HEARD FROM THEM. FIVE MONTHS LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPEN, WE TOOK IT TO THE CLOSEST HONDA AND WE WERE TOLD THE SAME OLD STORY, THE PROBLEM IS A WORN TIRE. NOW SINCE WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE NOISE, WE TOOK IT TO THE FIRST HONDA WHO FIXED IT THE FIRST TIME, AND THE PART WAS REPLACED AGAIN. Component or system failure: The vehicle experienced failures involving the engine/ignition system, emissions system, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and power steering. On July 14, 2025, warning messages appeared for “Check Emissions System,” “Check VSA System,” and “Check Power Steering System.” Diagnostics identified engine misfire code P0304 (Cylinder #4). On August 11, 2025, an authorized Honda dealership confirmed a seized spark plug and cylinder head damage, indicating an internal engine defect. The vehicle is currently with the selling dealership and available for inspection. Safety risk: Simultaneous failure warnings for emissions, VSA, and power steering created an unsafe driving condition. Impaired stability control and power steering increase the risk of loss of vehicle control during turning or emergency maneuvers. Confirmation of problem: Yes. Independent diagnostics confirmed the misfire. The selling dealer attempted repairs between July 22–25, 2025, but the same warnings returned. On August 8, 2025, the dealer admitted it lacked tools and software to diagnose or repair CNG vehicles. Honda later confirmed internal engine damage. Inspections: The vehicle was inspected by the selling dealer and an authorized Honda dealership. A third-party warranty administrator authorized a tear-down inspection. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by Honda Motor Co. or NHTSA. Prior warnings and recall concern: Warnings first appeared on July 14, 2025, about two weeks after purchase, and recurred despite repairs. So according to Honda Service Bulletin 20-030, all honda civic 2012-2015 hybrids having IMA Motor Power Inverter (MPI) have to fixed. I have the SAME CAR, SAME MODEL, SAME YEAR AND SAME ERROR CODES AS THE SERVICE BULLETIN AND THIS IS SUCH A SERIOUS ELECTRICAL POWER INVERTER ISSUE. Yet HONDA IS denying to work on it, even though there is 15 years or 150,000 miles warranty for this specific issue and MY CAR HAS 95000 miles. Yet HONDA is trying to run away from fixing it by claiming the VIN number is not associating whereby MY CAR IS EXACT SAME AS THE MODEL, year and issue for the GIVEN SERVICE BULLETIN. This is complete absurd and consumer rights are being thrown away by Honda. I am very sure that my United States NHTSA, state consumer protection, federal trade commission, all are going to help me and make Honda pay for this. I purchased this vehicle 6 months ago from a dealer. In the short time I have had the car, there have been multiple issues presented. Bluetooth has been malfunctioning (connects the disconnects), window regulator has had to be replaced three times now (window kept disconnecting from the track and would cause the window to go down sideways and get stuck), more recently the AC condenser went out (it was reported as the condenser has small pieces of metal inside preventing the freon to get into the system and cool the inside of the vehicle).

Randomly, while driving, ON THE HIGHWAY, all the engine dashboard lights came on at once. The car stopped working. It shut down in the most dangerous environment and it’s a miracle that we didn’t get into a car crash. Taking the car to hybrid auto repair in order have the codes read, there was a readout of P1440, B2993, and B2992. Doing research, I found the link which I included; it appears there is a consistent IGBT malfunction in the motor power inverter which is believed to happen after 100k miles but from different testimonials, can actually happen at any mileage. This electrical issue has been closely related to the air conditioner (which our car had issues with when purchased) with the summer months upon us, I can only imagine how many more of these hybrid vehicles will spontaneously lose power in the middle of traffic.

dealership found this Honda one brake light blub only with 26764 miles in early 2021. I complained to Honda, they claimed and a case 12786775 and let me called them, then told me "out of warranty". Honda then closed the case. This is a quality of light blub issue, not warranty. In fact 1. Dealership said it is not often saw, only saw a few, you are unluck. One out of 10000 blub can like that. 2. I had a few Honda before, all light blubs will be good even they were more than 80000 miles and more than 12 or 15 years old. This is a clearly quality issue. Honda need replace it freely. Thanks.

I WAS DRIVING HOME AT NIGHT. I HAD MY HEADLIGHTS TURNED TO AUTO LIKE I ALWAYS DO. AS I WAS DRIVING HOME IT SEEMED DARKER THAN USUAL. WHEN I PULLED UP IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE, MY HUSBAND, WHO I HAD FOLLOWED HOME, TOLD ME MY DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS WERE ON, NOT MY HEADLIGHTS. HE CAME TO MY DOOR BEFORE I TURNED OFF THE CAR. I POINTED TO THE INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE DASH TO SHOW HIM THAT THE HEADLIGHT SYMBOL WAS ON AND THAT MY DASH WAS LIT. I THEN GOT OUT OF MY CAR AND SAW THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE IN FACT NOT ON. ON 3/15/2019 I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET WHEN MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED (CHECK ENGINE, BRAKE MALFUNCTION, IMA BATTERY, CHARGING MALFUNCTION). THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. ONCE THERE, THEY DETERMINE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS RELATED TO RODENTS CHEWING FROM WIRES WHICH DAMAGED THE FUEL LINE AND IMA SYSTEM. AFTER THIS WAS REPAIRED, THE CAR STILL HAD FAILURE CODES DUE TO MECHANICAL ISSUES WITH THE CAR'S SYSTEM. TROUBLESHOOTING LED THE TECHNICIAN TO DETERMINE THAT THE MOTOR POWER INVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS REQUIRED THEM TO ALSO HAVE TO REPLACE THE JUNCTION BOARD. AFTER THEY WERE INSTALLED, THE IMA LIGHT STAYED ON, THE BATTERY WOULD NOT CHARGE, AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO RECODE. I am reporting a serious safety concern with my 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid. What component or system failed and is it available for inspection? The hybrid drive system and regenerative braking system are malfunctioning. The hybrid battery recharging system including the MPI have failed, causing the vehicle to operate solely on the gasoline engine. This results in degraded braking performance due to the loss of regenerative braking. How was safety put at risk? When the hybrid system fails, braking performance is noticeably reduced, increasing stopping distances. This creates a high risk of collision, especially in sudden-stop situations or heavy traffic. Additionally, the sudden loss of hybrid power assistance can cause unsafe changes in vehicle acceleration and handling. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The issue has been confirmed by Pearson Honda in Midlothian, Virginia. They state the MPI needs to be replaced and state my VIN is outside their "factory warranty extension". Multiple calls to Honda America state that I am responsible for all repairs and that this is not their problem and will not clarify how they decide what VIN's are included in the extension. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by others? The vehicle has been inspected by Pearson Honda in Midlothian, VA and documentation is available. It has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives at this time. Warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to failure? Yes. Warning lights for the hybrid system and/or IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) illuminate promptly as you start the vehicle. These first appeared last week ([XXX]) and have occurred multiple times since. Front passenger seat belt pretensioner (Honda part #HP04814-TR3-A00ZA) deployed too late after a minor impact (<10 mph) causing passenger to lurch forward until seat belt engaged. The part is not available for inspection. Passenger's safety was at risk due to not being held firmly in place by the seat belt. Don't know if Honda has confirmed/reproduced this issue. Car was inspected by Honda dealership on 11/28/21. No other impact related damage or parts failure discovered by Honda during inspection. Honda replacement part (Honda part #HP04814-TR3-A00ZA) ordered at that time. Replacement part was backordered and did not arrive until 9/1/23. No warning lamps/messages/other symptoms prior to failure.

The contact owns a 2012 Honda Civic. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was extremely hot air was throughout the vehicle. There was an abnormal burning odor detected. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the air condition compressor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000.

WHEN THE CHECK TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS ERROR DISPLAYS THE CAR DOES NOT SHIFT AS IT SHOULD. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE ENGINE OR TRANSMISSION, AND NO ERROR CODES CAME UP ON HIS COMPUTER. MOST RECENT INCIDENT OCCURRED ON 11/27/2017 ,10/6/2017,10/9/17 AND IN OTHER SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHEN OPERATING THE VEHICLE AND ITS INABILITY TO PERFORM IN A SAFE MATTER HAS GREATLY TROUBLED ME CONCERNING MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY PUBLIC. THE FOLLOWING OCCURRED ON THAT DAY, WHILE I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN CROSSING LANES OF TRAFFIC AND CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE WHEN THE GAS PEDAL WAS BEING PUSHED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE CAR ALSO LAUNCHES FORWARD WHILE IN THE DRIVE GEAR OR ON REVERSE AFTER IT HAS BEEN PARKED FOR SEVERAL HOURS. ON OTHER OCCASIONS , WHEN PULLING INTO OR OUT OF THE GARAGE/DRIVEWAY THE CAR CLUNKED AND LURCHED AHEAD. ON OTHER OCCASIONS THE CAR HAS UNATTENDED GAS CONTROL ISSUE, THE CAR ALSO REACHES TOP SPEEDS OF OVER 37 MPH WITHOUT EVEN TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL ONCE. THIS NOW HAPPENS DAILY, I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TELL ME THIS IS A NORMAL FUNCTION OF THE CAR WHEN I KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL CARS AND I KNOW THIS IS NOT NORMAL. I NO LONGER FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING THIS CAR BECAUSE IT IS UNSAFE. SUDDENLY, I NEEDED TO SLOW DOWN AND PRESSED ON MY BRAKE AND THE BRAKE WAS HARD WHERE I COULDN'T STEP DOWN ON IT. IT SEEMED LIKE IT GOT STUCK. I KEPT PRESSING ON IT AND IT DID NOT WORK. I STARTED ZIG ZAGGING BACK AND FORTH ON THE ROAD TRYING TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. I WAS TRYING MY BEST TO CONTROL THE CAR SO I WOULDN'T RUN INTO A HOUSE OR ANOTHER CAR. WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL RIGHT AND LEFT, THERE IS A LOUD CLANKING NOISE. IT HAPPENS 95% OF THE TIME. THE DEALER TOLD ME IT WAS THE POWER STEERING FLUID (EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO POWER STEERING FLUID AS THE 2012 MODEL HAS AN ELECTRONIC SYSTEM). THE NOISE HAS CONTINUED AND GETS WORSE. I WAS TRAVELING ON ELKRIDGE LANDING ROAD AND MERGED RIGHT ONTO THE RAMP THAT MERGES TO WEST NURSERY ROAD. THE RAMP HAS A POT HOLE WHICH BASED ON ITS PLACEMENT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO COMPLETELY MISS, I RAN OVER IT WITH MY FRONT DRIVER SIDE WHEEL. THE IMPACT IMMEDIATELY FLATTENED MY TIRE. I WAS FORCED TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO THE CLOSEST SHOP AND I HAD TO PAY FOR A NEW WHEEL AS WELL AS THE DIAGNOSTICS TO ENSURE ITS COMPLETION. WHILE DRIVING ON HILLY CITY STREETS DURING A SNOW STORM, THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL AND ABS SYSTEMS ENGAGED, FOLLOWED SHORTLY BY WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES THAT THESE SYSTEMS NEEDED ATTENTION. DESPITE PARKING THE CAR AND TURNING OFF THE ENGINE, A SMALL MOTOR WITHIN THE "ABS MODULATOR CONTROL UNIT" CONTINUED TO OPERATE AND WOULD NOT STOP UNTIL I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. THE MODULATOR/CONTROL UNIT HAD TO BE REPLACED WITH A USED UNIT COSTING $280, NOT COUNTING DIAGNOSTIC AND LABOR CHARGES. (TOTAL REPAIR COST: $602.) A NEW UNIT WOULD HAVE COST OVER $1000. THE USED PART CAME WITH A "LIFETIME WARRANTEE." IT SEEMS THAT THE ORIGINAL DEVICE SHOULD HAVE BEEN WARRANTEED BEYOND THE STANDARD 3YR/30,000 MILE LIMIT AS IT IS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE. IT DID NOTHING MY STEERING BECAME LOCKED THE ONLY RECOURSE I HAD WAS TO PULL THE EMERGENCY BRAKES TO PREVENT MY CAR FROM HITTING ANYONE. I ENDING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. ENGINE WAS STALLED, AUTOMATIC GEAR HAD SHIFTED IN NEUTRAL BY ITSELF, AND THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL IN THE CAR. FIRST TIME DRIVING THIS CAR IN LIGHT SNOW. AT THE TOP OF A HILL, I TURNED LEFT TO TRAVERSE THE HILL TO TAKE A SIDE STREET, FOLLOWING MY CO-WORKERS. THE CIVIC SLIPPED - JUST A BIT- AND THE VSA LIGHT LIT. I IMMEDIATELY LOST ALL THROTTLE CONTROL, BRAKES WERE WILDLY ACTIVATING (SEEMINGLY 1 AT A TIME), AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS JERKING. I WAS GOING VERY SLOW WHEN THE CIVIC TOOK ALL CONTROL AWAY FROM ME. I COULD NOT APPLY ANY THROTTLE TO PULL OUT OF A VERY MINOR SLIP AND MY CAR ACCELERATED SIDEWAYS DOWN THE SLOPE INTO A CURB WHICH DESTROYED THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND SUSPENSION. I HAVE SPENT $1125 SO FAR TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE AND HAVE NOT REPLACED THE TIRE & WHEEL YET (ANOTHER APPROX. $600). I TOLD THE 2 FORD DEALERS WHO PERFORMED THE REPAIRS ABOUT THIS INCIDENT AND NEITHER GAVE IT ANY THOUGHT. I REQUESTED THEY TURN OFF THE VSA SYSTEM, BOTH REFUSED. I CAN NOT THINK OF ANY REASON, IN THE REAL WORLD, ANY CAR SHOULD TAKE COMPLETE CONTROL AWAY FROM THE DRIVER LIKE THIS, ESPECIALLY FOR SUCH A MINOR OCCURRENCE AS A SLIPPING WHEEL. THE HEATING ELEMENT WITHIN THE DEFROSTER AND REAR DEFROSTER WOULD NOT OPERATE PROPERLY UNLESS ACTIVATED FOR AT LEAST TWENTY MINUTES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE OPERATED ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000. UPDATED 04/09/13*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE MOST DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE, WAS THE NON-FUNCTIONING WINDSHIELD DEFROSTER. THE DASHBOARD AIR COMPRESSION SYSTEM WAS NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, ONLY THE BOTTOM SIX INCHES OF THE WINDSHIELD WAS CLEANED OFF DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER. IN THE SUMMER TIME WHEN IT RAINED, THE WINDOWS WOULD FOG UP FROM THE HIGH HUMIDITY, BECAUSE THE DEFROSTER WOULD CLEAR THE WINDOWS. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE DOOR LOCKS DID NOT WORK AND THE HEATING SYSTEM WOULD TAKE 10-15 MINUTES TO ACTIVATE, DEPENDING ON HOW COLD IT WAS. I TALKED TO THE SERVICE GUYS AT THE HONDA THAT IT HAS SEEN FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE GOING BY COMPUTER MENU THINGY.. I VE BEEN EARLY OR ON TIME GETTING IT SERVICED.. THEY SAID "THE BRAKES ARE SUPPOSE TO WORK THAT WAY" REALLY? I'D BE DEVASTATED IF THERE WAS AN ANIMAL, A PERSON, INFRONT OF ME I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM AND GONE OVER THEM.. I VE NEVER EVER HAD A CAR RESPOND THAT WAY.. AFTER THE HIT, I MOVED TO THE SIDE.. AUTOMATICALLY USED E BRAKE. I THEN DROVE IT A MILE FURTHER AT A CRAWL TO A PARKING GARAGE TO MAKE CALLS.. I DROVE AT A SNAILS PACE.. YOU COULD'VE WALKED NEXT TO US.. 2 HRS LATER, I DROVE IT TWO MORE MILES AT THE SAME SPEED TO BODY SHOP.. I HAVE ASKED THEM TO LOOK AT IT.. THEY HAVEN'T YET.. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO PROBLEMS WITH SNAP SHOT DEVICE *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THE MONITORING DEVICE WAS PLUGGED INTO THE VEHICLE OBD-II DIAGNOSTIC PORT, IT WAS SUPPOSED TO THE SEND CERTAIN INFORMATION TO HIS INSURANCE COMPANY, WHICH WOULD BE A 30% DISCOUNT OFF HIS POLICY. AFTER PLUGGING IT IN, THE DEVICE MUST REMAIN OPERATIONAL FOR A PERIOD OF SIX MONTHS. AFTER MONTHS OF DATA LOGGING, HIS INSURANCE COMPANY WOULD SEND A REBATE BASED ON HIS DRIVING HABITS. THE DEVICE WAS SUPPOSED TO MONITOR VEHICLE SPEED IN GRAPH FORM, THE TIME OF DAY/NIGHT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATIONAL IN GRAPH FORM AND THE NUMBER OF HARD BRAKES PER TRIP AND PER DAY. THE INFORMATION WAS PULLED FROM THE VEHICLES SYSTEM ONBOARD COMPUTERS. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAD TWO ISSUES WITH THE DEVICE; SHE STATED SHE DROVE AT THE NORMAL POSTED SPEED LIMITS AND SHE WOULD BRAKE IN A VERY CONSERVATIVE AND SAFE MANNER AND NOT SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES RESULTING IN A HARD BRAKE, WHICH HER INSURANCE COMPANY DEFINED AS GREATER THAN 7 MPH PER SECOND. SHE STATED SHE HAS ACCUMULATED AS MUCH AS 13-15 HARD BRAKES PER DAY AND SOME DAYS WITH ZERO HARD BRAKES BECAUSE SHE DROVER THE VEHICLE SLOW AS TO NOT HAVE TO BRAKE AT ALL, WHICH RESULTED IN THE NORMAL FLOW OF TRAFFIC, BACKING UP BEHIND HER, WHICH WAS AN ACTUAL A TRAFFIC INFRACTION.

2012 HONDA CIVIC. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO DEFECTIVE VEHICLE AND CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM GEAR SHIFT. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD LEAVE LINES AND SMEARS ON THE WINDSHIELD. THE WIPERS WERE REPLACED FOUR TIMES. THERE WAS A BUZZING NOISE COMING FROM THE HEATER, THE PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND STAYED ON FOR AN HOUR. THE DIMMER LIGHTS DIDN'T CHANGE FROM HIGH TO LOW, THE SEAT BELTS DID NOT RELEASE WHEN SHE MOVED FORWARD, INSTEAD IT LOCKED UP AND THERE WAS A SMELL OF CARBON MONOXIDE COMING THROUGH THE VENTS. THE RUBBER SLIDES IN EACH WINDOW DID NOT WORK CORRECTLY, BECAUSE OF THE MOISTURE ON THE WINDOWS.

MY WIFE CAME TO A STOP AT OUR SECURITY GATE, USED THE REMOTE FOR THE GATE BUT IT WOULDN'T OPEN. SHE BACKED UP ABOUT 15 FEET TO TURN AROUND. WHEN SHE PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE, IT LURCHED FORWARD BACK TOWARDS THE GATE AND WOULDN'T STOP WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES. IT DIDN'T SPEED UP AND IT WOULDN'T STOP. THE CAR WAS MAKING A GRINDING NOISE AS IT MOVED ALONG. SHE WAS JAMMING ON THE BRAKES AND IT STILL WENT RIGHT THROUGH THE CLOSED GATE, PUSHING IT OPEN AS IT WENT. IT KEPT GOING FOR ANOTHER 40-50 FEET UNTIL SHE THOUGHT TO PULL ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE CAR STOPPED. SHE TURNED THE CAR OFF AND GOT OUT, BADLY SHAKEN BUT NOT INJURED. WE BOUGHT THE HONDA CIVIC IN FEB 2012. DROVE ABOUT 1000 MILES. ONE DAY I FEEL LITTLE HESITATION IN THIRD GEAR. I OPEN THE HOOD TO JUST CHECK, AND FOUND THE WATER ALL OVER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND HOOD LINER WAS WET AND SOGGY. I WAS SURPRIZE AND WORRYED THOUGHT COOLING SYSTEM BUSTED OR LOOSE HOSE CLAMP. BUT AFTER THAROUGH CHECKUP FOUND THAT RAIN WATER SEEP THRU BETWEEN FRONT HOOD LIP AND GRILL. I TOLD MY WIFE NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR, IT'S NOT SAFE, BECAUSE WATER CAN DAMAGE THE ELECTRIC COMPONENT AND MAY CAUSE FIRE. SO I DRY THE ENGINE AREA AS MUCH AS I COULD. SETUP THE APPOINTMENT WITH HONDA DEALER. FIRST OF ALL THE SERVICE SUPPERVISOR DID NOT BELIVE, AND THEN SHE CHECK COUPLE OF OTHER CARS SAME MODEL AND YEAR,AND FOUND THAT ALL THE CARS ARE THE SAME DESIGN NOTHING MISSING. SHE SUGGEST TO CALL THE HONDA MANUFACTURE. I ASKED FOR THE WORK ORDER, SHE SAID THERE IS NO PROBLEM SO NO WORK ORDER NEED TO FILLUP. I TALK TO SALE PERSON ABOUT ALL THIS; HE SAID THE SAME. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. I ASK FOR THE SERVICE MANAGER; AND SHOW HIM THE CAR AND PROBLEM; HE SAID THE SAME TO CALL MANUFACTURE. BUT ATLEAST HE AGREED TO WRITE THE WORK ORDER. I GOT INTO A ACCIDENT LAST MONDAY, FEB. 13, 2012, LIKE AROUND 8 OR 9 IN THE MORNING. I WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN WHEN MY CAR WENT OUT OF CONTROL EVEN THOUGH I WAS ALREADY STEPPING ON THE BRAKES AND I WAS TRYING TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT BUT THE CAR JUST KEPT GOING TO THE RIGHT UNTIL I HIT THE POLE SIGN THAT SAYS "NO PARKING AT ALL TIMES" (SOMETHING LIKE THAT). THE METAL POLE THAT I HIT BROKE AND ALMOST 1/4 OF THAT METAL POLE THAT WAS STUCK TO THE GROUND SCRAPED THE BOTTOM OF PART OF MY CAR AND THE BOTTOM COVERING FELL OFF AND IT COST $4,000.00 TO REPAIR AND NOW I HAVE TO PAY $500.00 FOR MY DEDUCTIBLE WHICH IS NOT EVEN MY FAULT WHY MY CAR DID THAT. IT WASN'T THE FIRST TIME MY CAR DID THAT. IT DID SOMETHING WEIRD TWICE LAST YEAR BEFORE I GOT INTO THIS ACCIDENT LAST WEEK. THANK GOODNESS THERE'S NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THEN THE SECOND TIME WAS I THINK AROUND NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER OF LAST YEAR WHEN MY FRIEND WAS TEST DRIVING THE CAR TO SEE IF SHE WANTS TO BUY THE SAME THING. WE WERE TOGETHER IN THE CAR AND SHE WAS DRIVING WHEN SHE STOPPED STEPPING ON THE GAS AND BRAKES AND THE CAR JUST ACCELERATED BY ITSELF. THE CIVIC I HAVE IS ONLY FOR 3 MONTH AND AROUND 3000 MILES. IT WAS A SUNNY DAY, THE ROAD IS DRY. I DRIVE LIKE AROUND 50 MILES/HR ON GRAND CENTRAL PARKWAY IN NY, SUDDENLY I SAW PEOPLE HIT THE BREAK IN FRONT OF ME, THEN I HIT THE BREAK AS SOON AS I CAN. I DIDNT HIT THE BREAK TO THE END (JUST AROUND HALF) BUT THE TIRE START TO SCREAM. I RELEASE THE BREAK A LITTLE BIT AND HIT IT AGAIN BUT THE TIRE STILL SCREAM AND I KEEP SLIDING. I SLIDE WITH MY TIRE LOCKED FOR MORE THE 5 CAR DISTANCE. THE TIRES KEEP SCREAMING AND I COULDNT STOP. THEN I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I HAVE A DRIVING RECORDER AND RECORD EVERYTHING. THE BODY SHOP HAD CHANGE A NEW ABS SYSTEM AND BREAK AND RESET THE COMPUTER IN THE CAR. NOW THE BREAK IS MORE SHARP THEN BEFORE AND THE ABS WORK FINE. (I TEST IT ON A RAINING DAY IN MY DRIVEWAY) OTHER THING IS THAT THE CAR BECOME MORE FUEL EFFICIENT. I TRY SO HARD IN THE BEGINNING BUT ONLY GET 26 GALLON PER MILE. NOW IT IS SO EASY TO GO UP TO 29-30. (IT HAS BEEN USED FOR ANOTHER 800 MILE AND I DRIVE IT ON THE SAME ROAD I GO TO WORK) I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT AND DON'T WANT TO LET IT HAPPENS ON OTHERS.

WHILE GOING UP A HILL ON MY DRIVEWAY THE VSA (VEHICLE STABILITY ASSISTANT) WAS ACTIVATED ON MY 2012 HONDA CIVIC DUE TO SLIPPAGE IN SNOW. THE VSA MODULATOR GOT STUCK AND THE VSA, ABS AND POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHTS INSTANTLY TURNED ON. UPON TURNING THE CAR OFF THE VSA MODULATOR REMAINED ON PRODUCING A LOW FREQUENCY HUM/VIBRATION. I HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TERMINAL LAST NIGHT TO TURN THE MODULATOR OFF SO THAT IT DOES NOT DRAIN THE BATTERY. THIS TYPE OF FAILURE ON CRITICAL SAFETY COMPONENTS SHOULD NOT BE OCCURRING ON A 5 MONTH OLD CAR. LUCKILY THE FAILURE OCCURRED AT LOW SPEED (5 MPH).
