MY FAMILY WAS DRIVING OUR 2001 HYUNDAI ACCENT IN WHICH ANOTHER VEHICLE COLLIDED WITH OURS EXCEPT THE DASH BOARD AIR BAGS DIDN'T INFLATE. AFTERWARDS WITHIN TWO WEEKS I STOPPED AT THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP AND ASKED WHO SHOULD I INQUIRE WHY THE AIR BAGS DIDN'T WORK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AND I DID SEND AN EMAIL TO THE ADDRESS THE DEALERSHIP PROVIDED BUT HAVE HEARD NOTHING. MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER GOT BANGED UP BUT ARE OKAY NOW. THE ENGINE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON CAUSING A DOWN SHIFTING AFTER A BANGING IN THE TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING. IT WAS A SENSOR THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE RUNNING GEAR. WITHOUT IT THE CAR DOES NOT DRIVE. THAT IS PART OF THE RUNNING GEAR. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY 231.00. SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR, IT HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP REPAIR SHOP 5 TIMES, FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE CAR BEGINS TO HAVE PROBLEMS SHIFTING GEARS, IT LOSES POWER, AS NOT GOING HIGHER THAN 20-30 MILES. WHEN THE GAS PEDAL IS APPLIED, THE CAR GETS STUCK FOR SEVERAL SECONDS BEFORE IT JERKS AND BEGINS TO RUN AGAIN. EVERYTIME WE TAKE IT IN THEY REPAIR THE PULSE GENERATOR. THE PULSE GENERATOR HAS BEEN CHANGES TWO TIME IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS ALONE (JUNE, AUGUST), AND NOW ITS READY TO GO BACK INTO THE SHOP AGAIN. IT IS GETTING WORSE, IT IS BECOMING A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT GETS STUCK ANYWHERE, AND CAN GET HIT FROM BEHIND, OR GET INTO AN ACCIDENT WHEN IT STOPS IN THE MIDDLE OF A CROSS SECTION. *JB

DT: CONTACT STATES HIS CAR WAS LUNGING FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO SAID THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING WITH THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE DEALER REFUSED TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION DUE TO WARRANTY COVERAGE. THEY HAD THE CAR WITH 29,000 MILES THE POINT WHERE THEY WERE SAYING THE OIL SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED, AND DID NOT CHANGE THE OIL, EVEN THOUGH CONTACT HAD RECORDS INDICATING IT HAS BEEN CHANGED EVERY 3,000 MILES. One reason was: "Cradle is rusted through" Similar recalls exist for Hyundai Elantra (similar design) and Sonata (engine cradle) for same model year. This represents a dangerous condition. Vehicle is operated in Wisconsin, where roads are salted in winter.

TL* - THE CONTACT OWNS 2001 HYUNDAI ACCENT. WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH ON A VERY NICE DAY THE VEHICLE BEGAN DRIFTING ON THE ROAD. THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE WENT OFF THE ROAD AND THE REAR TIRE WENT OFF THE ROAD AS WELL. THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN TO APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH WHEN THE DRIVER LOST COMPLETE CONTROL. HE STATED THAT ONLY THE DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE WAS STEERING CORRECTLY, THE OTHER TIRES WERE GOING SIDE TO SIDE. THE CONTACT COULD NOT CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND WAS REAR ENDED. HE SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. THE FIRST WAS 5/03 AT 44K AND THE DEALER REPLACED COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, THE SECOND WAS 9/04 AT 80K NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY HAD A PRIVATE MECHANIC COMPLETE, AND THE THIRD WAS 3/05 AT 100K AGAIN BY A PRIVATE MECHANIC. I HAVE CALLED HYUNDAI 3 TIMES WITH NO RESPONSE TO MY INQUIRIES.

I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE SEAT BELT CAUSED THE ABRASION AND THE TORN WEATHER STRIPPING. I WAS TOLD THAT THE COST TO REPLACE THE WEATHER STRIPPING WOULD BE $98.00. I BELIEVE THAT THE SEAT BELT RETRACTOR IS DEFECTIVE, IN THAT IT DOES NOT FULLY RETRACT INTO THE SEAT BELT HOLDER AFTER THE DRIVERS SEAT BELT IS DISENGAGED. *LA

I BOUGHT A HYUNDAI ACCENT 2001 NEW AT CAR PROS IN LACEY (NOW SOLD). ON THE INCIDENT DATE I HAD A FLAT TIRE FROM A SCREW IN TIRE AT CHURCH. A FRIEND CHANGED THE TIRE FOR ME AND PUT ON THE SPARE TIRE(LITTLE ONE). I NOTICED IT LOOKED VERY LOW. THEY TOLD ME NOT TO DRIVE IT TO WORK SINCE I WORK A HALF-HOUR AWAY AND DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY (I-5). I WENT TO LES SCHWAB AND HAD THEM FIX THE FLAT TIRE & ASKED IF THEY WOULD LOOK AT THE SPARE ALSO. THEY TOLD ME THE SPARE ALREADY HAD A PLUG FROM A HOLE IN IT AND THAT THEY REPLACED THAT PLUG AND FILLED THE TIRE UP PROPERLY. HAD I BEEN ON THE FREEWAY I WOULD HAVE HAD ANOTHER FLAT AND BEEN STUCK OUT THERE. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WAS UPSET THAT THE NEW CAR I BOUGHT HAD A USED SPARE TIRE IN IT. SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR, CAR PROS IN LACEY, WA WAS SOLD TO TITUS-WILL IN OLYMPIA, WA, SO I CALLED THEM TO ASK WHAT DO I DO TO GET A NEW SPARE TIRE. THE GENERAL MANAGER CALLED ME AND AFTER DISCUSSING THE MATTER HAD HIS STAFF TAKE MY CAR TO LES SCHWAB TO PUT A NEW SPARE TIRE IN THE CAR. CORROSION HAS CREATED A HOLE ON EACH SIDE OF THE FRAME RAIL THAT WILL ALLOW FOR PASSAGE OF AN OBJECT SIMILAR IN SIZE TO A DECK OF CARDS. PASSENGER SIDE IS SIMILARLY CORRODED. MY HYUNDAI SATA FE, 2001, WAS PARKED AND UNATTENDED WHEN THE CAR IGNITED INTO FLAMES. A WITNESS SAW THE FIRE BEGIN IN THE HOOD OF THE CAR. ACCORDING TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT REPORT, THERE WAS NO CRIME OR ARSON. INSTEAD IT CLEARLY SAYS THAT THE CAUSE OF IGNITION WAS ACCIDENTAL, AND THE EQUIPMENT OR HEAT SOURCE FAILED. IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THERE WAS A MALFUNCTION IN THE ENGINE DUE TO MANUFACTURER. THIS WAS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF HYUNDAI. HYUNDAI DID NOT WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY TO FOR THE MALFUNCTION IN THE ENGINE. GEICO'S CLAIM DEPARTMENT NOTIFIED ME THAT MY CAR WAS DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS. THE INVESTIGATOR CLEARLY STATED THAT THIS ACCIDENT WAS NOT DUE TO MY ACTIONS. THEY ALSO SAID THAT I WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS NOT IN THE CAR OR I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR BURNED IN THE FIRE. HYUNDAI DID NOT WANT TO HELP ME WITH THIS MATTER. I STILL HAVE A LOAN OUT ON THE CAR. MY CAR WAS STILL UNDER 60,000 MILES AND I HAD FULL WARRANTY. GEICO HAS SETTLED FOR A SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY. ALL I WANTED WAS ANOTHER CAR. I WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY WITH A USED CAR TO REPLACE THE CAR WHICH WENT UP IN FLAMES DUE TO HYUNDAI'S POOR MANUFACTURING. GAS WAS LEAKING FROM TANK TO THE INSIDE OF THE CAR UNDER THE BACK SEAT AROUND THE PLATE THAT COVERS THE FUEL PUMP. GAS POOLED UNDERNEATH THE THE BACK SEAT ON PASSENGER SIDE. WHEN SEAT WAS REMOVED THE FOAM ON THE UNDERNEATH SIDE WAS SATURATED WITH GAS AND FROM THE TOP OF THE SEAT YOU COULD PUT PRESSURE ON THE SEAT AND GAS WOULD LITERALLY LEAK OUT OF THE SEAT. THE WEEK BEFORE OUR GRANDCHILDREN WERE IN THE BACK SEAT AND WE ALL WERE COMPLAINING OF HEADACHES. THE SMELL IS STILL THERE AFTER 2 ATTEMPT OF THE CAR DEALERSHIP SPRAYING IT AND ORDERING A NEW BACK SEAT. WE FEEL LIKE WE SHOULD HAVE A NEW CAR OUT OF THIS BECAUSE IT IS NOT FIXED. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SO DANGEROUS. THE PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP TOLD US WE WERE VERY LUCKY PEOPLE. IF WE HAD SMOKED OR SOMEONE THREW A CIGARETTE OR MATCH IT WOULD HAVE EXPLODED. WAS TOLD TO DRIVE MY CAR AT LEAST 150 MILES SO THAT THEY CAN RESET THE MONITORS WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT ON. THIS COST ME $257.00 NOW,VISIT #2- ON 1/03/08 ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY FIND 3 NEW PROBLEMS. THEY REPLACED A VALVE CANNISTER,PURGE VALVE,GAS CAP. THEY STATE THEY ALSO CLEARED THE CODES TO PASS INSPECTION. BUT, AGAIN I HAD TO DRIVE MY CAR ANOTHER 50+ MILES AGAIN SO THAT THEY COULD RESET THE MONITORS. ENGINE LIGHT WAS OFF, WHICH WAS A GOOD SIGN. THIS COST ME $508.00. HOWEVER, THE NEXT MORNING,I STARTED UP THE CAR. IT STARTED VERY ROUGH AND FELT LIKE IT WAS READY TO STALL OUT ON ME. ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON ALSO. SHE TELLS ME THAT THEIR WAS A #4 CYLINDER MISFIRE CODE, NEEDED A FUEL INJECTOR,SPARK PLUGS, PLUG WIRES,TIMING BELT, SERPENTINE BELT,BELT TENSIONER,OILL CHANGE AND FUEL INJECTOR SERVICE. ESTIMATED AT LEAST $1200.00. THIS WAS VERY UPSETTING. I DECLINED ALL WORK AND FILE A CUSTOMER COMPLAINT AGAINST THEM. MY CAR WAS RUNNING FINE WHEN I TOOK IT THE FIRST TIME. I HAVE A 2001 HYUNDAI ACCENT GL 1.6L ENGINE THE PULSE GENERATOR SWITCH HAS BROKEN 4 TIMES ALREADY EACH TIME I TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY TELL ME THAT THEY DON'T KNOW WHY IT KEEPS BREAKING AND THAT THERE ISN'T ANYTHING WRONG ONE TIME THE TRANSMISSION SWITCH BROKE, THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND GOES OUT, THE CAR HAS BEEN POORLY ACCELERATING AND SLOWING DOWN WHILE I AM ON THE HIGH WAY, ACCELERATING CRAZILY AND USING UP MORE GAS THAN NORMAL, IT HAS MADE SUDDEN JERKS WHEN I ACCELERATE AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS OR HAS STALLED FOR A FEW SECONDS WHEN I PRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL THE CAR DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE ENOUGH POWER AND THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED FOR ABOUT 24 HOURS AFTER I TAKE IT INTO THE DEALER THEN ITS BACK TO THE SAME ROUTINE. LATELY I HAVE BEEN HEARING A TICKING COMING FROM THE ENGINE. *LA

MY CAR ENGINE WILL REV UP ON ITS OWN WHEN IN NEUTRAL (I HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION) THE ENGINE REVS UP THEN IDLES LOW AS IF IT IS GOING TO STALL. I HAVE TAKEN IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES, AND THEY HAVE REPLACED THE COIL PACK, SPARK PLUGS, AND A SENSOR... STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. EVERY TIME I TAKE MY CAR IN THEY TELL ME THAT MY SPARK PLUGS ARE MISFIRING AND THAT I NEED TO HAVE THEM REPLACED AND BECAUSE THEY ARE A WEAR ITEM AND IT'S GOING TO COST ME. I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE IT DONE IN THE DEALERSHIP SO I DID A HOME REPAIR AND REPLACED THEM MYSELF. THIS IS THE 3RD SET OF PLUGS ON THIS CAR AND THEY ARE NOW MISFIRING AGAIN (ONLY AFTER 5 MONTHS) I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THEY CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY AREN'T HYUNDAI PLUGS (WHICH I UNDERSTAND), BUT THERE HAS GOT TO BE SOME REASON THAT THE PLUGS ARE FOULING OUT SO QUICKLY AND NO ONE WILL INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO REPLACE MY SPARK PLUGS (WEAR ITEM OR NOT) 4 TIMES IN 2 YEARS, NOR SHOULD I HAVE TO TWIST THE DEALERSHIPS ARM TO DO THE JOB THAT THEY ARE PAID UNDER WARRANTY TO DO! VEHICLE'S HAD A HIGH IDLE, WHICH CAUSED UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION. DEALER HAS REPAIRED THE DEFECTIVE PART, BUT PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. *AK AFTER THE REPAIR, BOTH THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AND THE PULSE GENERATOR HAD GONE BAD. DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO COVER PARTS BECAUSE THEY WERE OUT OF WARRANTY. FINALLY THEY AGREED TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE CONSUMER HAD TO PAY FOR THE PULSE GENERATOR TO BE REPLACED. CONSUMER FEELS THE PRESCRIPTION OUTLINED IN THE RECALL WASN'T SUFFICIENT TO CORRECT THE EMISSIONS DEFECT. *PH *JB
