AIR BAGS
20 complaints
Once my 2015 Hyundai Accent reached 80K the airbag light came on. I took into the dealership for them to look into and found that the passenger side air bag sensor failed and needed replaced. Cost of new sensor was $1000.00. Did some research on the issue and found that air bag sensors are failing on the passenger side for many Hyundai Accent owners. I believe some reported to this very agency. I plan on having the sensor replaced, however wanted to report the issue and the amount of reports on forums and reports to the NHTSA in hopes that it will be recalled so that future Hyundai Accent owners can be aware of the issue and protect their passengers.

Airbag light on. Dealer pulled codes B7614 and B1490. OCS fault in mat. Recommended replacing OCS mat in passenger seat. Airbag light turns on when weight in passenger seat vacant, or does not reach weight threshold. Light usually turns off when passenger is in seat. However, vehicle could not pass state inspection with this occupant detection system malfunction.

I was involved in a collision with a flying object that went through the windshield, knocked off my mirror, and damaged the frame of my car. The airbag attempted to deploy; however, it failed to do so. No warnings. The vehicle is currently at the shop waiting to be repaired. The airbag has not been inspected yet.

ODS system mat is defective. We are seeing the same cold temperature malfunction of the ODS system that have been reported for other 2015 Hyundai Accent cars. We feel that the recall should expanded.

YESTERDAY, ON MARCH 26, 2021 DURING ROAD TRIP AN AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON WITHOUT NO REASON AND IT STILL STAYS ON. ON MARCH 27, 2021 I CALLED MY DEALER TO GET HELP. I WAS TRYING TO ASK THEM TO WAIVE INSPECTION FEE BECAUSE IT IS SAFETY CONCERN, BUT THEY SAID "NO". MY CAR IS 6 YEARS OLD, 66,000 MILEAGE. I AM FIRST OWNER AND THIS CAR WAS NEVER INVOLVED IN ANY CRASH. BECAUSE OF PRESENT COVID19 CRISIS I HAVE NOT ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY UPFRONT FOR SPECIAL INSPECTIONS. I HOPE THAT I WILL GET HELP IN YOUR DEPARTMENT.

ENGINE

On [XXX] the engine in my 2015 Hyundai Accent suddenly failed while traveling on [XXX] near Milesburg, PA. While attempting to accelerate, the vehicle completely stopped. It was able to be coasted to the side of the roadway, but was unable to be driven after that. It was towed back to South Williamsport to Steve Shannon's garage (where it still sits). After inspection by the mechanics it was noted that there was a hole through the engine (not from puncture) to where they were able to watch the pistons moving from underneath. There were no warnings or issues prior to this event. This event put my brother, sister in law and two toddler nephews in danger as they sat on the side of [XXX] waiting an hour for me to get there to pick them up, as they were borrowing my vehicle to take a family trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo. I believe the speed limit in that area is 65mph. Therefore, traffic (to include semi-trucks) were traveling at least 65mph passing the vehicle and my family on the side of the road. PSP was able to come out and stage with their lights activated until my arrival. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I have a 2015 Hyundai accent with the 1.6l engine and have had to put on 3 catalytic converters in less than a year. The last one only lasting 1 month. I have taken it to a shop and had all repairs done there as well as having spark plugs changed and had the sensors replaced.

The contact's niece owns a 2015 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle was stalling. The vehicle also made loud unknown ticking sounds. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. An independent mechanic who diagnosed the failure to be engine related. The contact also stated an unknown dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired; however, only the oil was changed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was unknown.

My check engine light came on and stayed on, while the oil light appeared when my car was in idle and the engine began to knock. My AAA approved mechanic determined that the engine had a rod knock and the oil pressure at idle was only 3 psi. In other words, the the engine had completely failed and would have to be replaced. At 36,000 miles !I had the car towed to the local dealership where they confirmed this diagnosis and noted excessive metal debris in the oil and oil pan. My research revealed that an identical engine manufacturing defect had resulted in a class action suit against Hyundai which was settled in 2018. Hyundai was forced to replace the engines with new ones and cover all the owners costs for 3.9 million complainants. They also suffered a huge fine by the NHTSA. Because of Covid lockdowns, I had driven my car very little in 2020, otherwise this catastrophic failure would have occurred well within the the 5 year warranty period. As it was, the warranty had expired approximately 4 months earlier. The dealership contacted Hyundai N.A. and I was offered a "goodwill offer" which allowed me to pay over $3200 for a reconditioned engine with a warranty of only 1 year or 12,000 miles. It is my contention that no reputable car manufacturer would consider an engine life of only 36,000 miles to be acceptable. There is no question that the engine failure was, in any way, my fault and I have the maintenance records to prove it. My "goodwill offer" expired and I towed my car home. Of course, I was fortunate that my engine did not fail on the freeway, at high speed, or burst into flames as some Hyundai engines have been known to do.

ON JANUARY 30 2015. I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 65 MPH .UPON ENTERING THE TAPPEN ZEE BRIDGE ALL DASH LIGHTS CAME ON AND I ENCOUNTERED A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS. OF SPEED/POWER. TOP SPEED WAS AROUND 5-10 MPH. AFTER GETTING TO SAFE PLACE , I CONTACTED HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE ,THEY TOLD ME IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM. AFTER A 3 HOUR "COOLDOWN" I WAS ABLE TO TRANSPORT THE CAR TO ROCKLAND HYUNDAI. AFTER SEVERAL MORE HOURS THE SERVICE TECH TOLD ME " THE DEALER PREP BUTTON " WASN'T PUSHED. THIS SOUNDED SUSPICIOUS , SO I CONTACTED SEVERAL DEALERS. I WAS TOLD BY ALL OF THEM THERE ISN'T A DEALER PREP BUTTON. HOWEVER THERE IS A SWITCH. WAS ALSO TOLD IF THIS SWITCH WASN'T ACTIVATED THE CAR WOULD NOT DO WHAT IT DID( GO INTO SAFE MODE) . THE SWITCH CONTROLS ACCESSORIES ( POWER WINDOWS, RADIO, LIGHTS...) TO THIS DAY I HAVE BEEN TOLD WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. I ALSO FILED A COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI, BUT ALL I GET IS THEM STALLING.

I RENTED THIS VEHICLE FROM ALAMO CAR RENTAL, LAX, ON AUGUST 14, 2015 AND RETURNED IT TO ALAMO LAX ON SEPTEMBER 3, 2015 FOR THE FOLLOWING REASON. THE FRONT BUMPER COVER SPONTANEOUSLY DETACHED FROM THE BODY. THE AUTO HAD BEEN PARKED OVERNIGHT IN THE HOUSING COMPLEX PARKING LOT. I DISCOVERED IT UPON WALKING TO THE CAR IN THE MORNING. THERE WAS NO SIGN OF ANY IMPACT OR TRAUMA THAT MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THE SEPARATION. IT WAS AS IF TWO PIECES THAT FIT TOGETHER SIMPLY CAME APART.

The steering wheel, when in use in turning, emanates a fairly distinct "clicking" sound, whether turning left or right. I have been told this happens in hyundai and kia vehicles, and that there has been some movement from manufacturer to replace the "Steering Coupler" in some models. I first noticed mine approximately 6 months ago. Will I receive a letter for my dealership to replace mine? I bought new (August 2015) and now have only 57,000 miles on vehicle. I am afraid if this gets worse I might loose ability to steer and that it could happen at the worst possible moment. Can you help? My 2015 Hyundai accent started having problems with oil consumption around 65000 miles. I got it checked regularly and the mechanic noticed it after it was having issues accelerating and losing power then cutting off completely. I had to constantly check oil each week or sooner. A couple months later it started losing power on high way and there was a clicking/ticking coming from engine. I pulled over and cut it off. Then drove it slowly (under 30 mph) to car store down the road to add oil but it was fine. Was able to get back home on back roads going slowly. Mechanic told me there oil consumption was a problem with these types of cars and likely causing engine problems. The whole time I had problems the check engine, battery, and oil light would constantly come on and go off. When they hooked it up to see why check engine light was on there were about 15 different codes. One of them being the Variable Valve Solenoid which I ended up replacing both first but still had problems. It would accelerate but there was still a ticking noise upon accelerating. I didn’t drive it for a few weeks then the day I was going to take it back to shop, My husband, his friend, and I were on highway a couple minutes from home and hit a bump and heard a loud thud when the ticking stopped but the car beside us was waving to get our attention that the car was on fire. There was smoke coming through a.c. And you could see it in the rear. My husband quickly pulled over and when I went to get out of passengers side, flames shot up my side of the door so I quickly jumped across out his side. We were able to all get out ok. Luckily there was a firetruck coming down the highway before I could even get ahold of dispatch on 911. The cars front end was engulfed in flames which they were able to put out quickly. The hood was roasted. I’m not sure if they determined the cause and my car is still sitting in the lot where they towed it. Unfortunately I had a lapse in insurance because I was out of work

Around the middle of May 2024 I received a recall notice #23V651000. I made an appointment for approximately 2 weeks on June 5. When I arrived I was told the part was never ordered. Coconut Creek Hyundai said they would order the part and call me in a few days. After not hearing for 2 weeks I went back to Hyundai and was told the part hadn’t come in and to go home and they would call me in a few days. After several more weeks I went back and was told the part still hadn’t arrived. It was about a month and a half and still no part. The service manager told me that Hyundai USA was placing a low priority on my model car and manufacturing that part last after all the other models. It’s now 4 months later and I have never received any call from Coconut Creek Hyundai. When this first happened I contacted both Coconut Creek Hyundai and Hyundai USA. Hyundai USA said they couldn’t interfere with the local dealer even though it’s a Federal Safety Recall! Hyundai Coconut Creek basically blew me off. I think this is deliberate on the part of Hyundai USA to service higher cost vehicles before lower cost. They are playing games with my personal safety and that of my car. They are deliberately defying the recall! I believe whatever compliance procedures you have in place should be enforced to the fullest including fines if necessary. Again they are defying the recall and putting my safety and other Accent owners in jeopardy simply for profits.

My 2015 Hyundai Accent started having issues with oil consumption at about 80,000 miles or so. I was having to check and add oil to the vehicle regularly in addition to oil changes. The oil consumption issue got worse as the vehicle got higher in miles, having to check and add oil every 600-1000 miles approximately. I was not aware of the known issue with Hyundai motors and the oil consumption so I was not tracking milage or dates of adding oil unfortunately. At about 100,135 miles, the vehicle suddenly broke down on my way to work. There was no warning other than the oil consumption problem. The car RPMs got very high and the car started decelerating until it wouldn't go forward anymore and was stalled on the side of the road. I had the vehicle towed to a Hyundai dealership and at this time it waiting for the diagnosis, however, they are sure that the head gasket has to be removed (for $500) to get that diagnosis. When the car died, there were no warning lights on at all, however, previously, there had been lights for low oil occasionally, but not always, when the oil was low. Many times when I checked and the oil was low, there was no light that indicated that it was low.

The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle in the garage, approximately four hours later the contact was awakened by the dog and discovered flames coming from the garage. The fire department was called to the home and extinguished the flames. During the incident the home was partially destroyed and deemed unlivable and the vehicle was also destroyed. A fire report was taken at the scene. The home insurance inspector later indicated that the fire originated from the engine compartment of the vehicle. No physical injuries were reported, but the contact had experienced severe stress and anxiety from the incident. The manufacturer was not contacted regarding the incident. The local dealer was notified. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000(Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced that same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 78,000.

Loss of brake traction, there's no pressure applied to control spinning wheel when driving in the rain or sleet. The wheel kept spinning when traction was suppose to kick in to help prevent sliding. I had to pump the brake as I slide in the rain and recent snow in Ohio. Dec 26, 2022 Dennis Hyundai confirmed faulty HECU/ABS control module. The car is currently at Hyundai's dealership for further testing. The warning light came on, but went out a week before taking the 2015 Hyundai Accent to be serviced.

Okay, I'm going to try my best at explaining what I am experiencing. This is my SECOND Hyundai Accent. The first car I had was a 2004 Accent. The second car I have now is a 2015. Both cars have the same exact problem. And I am NOT fixing it. This is definitely a MANUFACTURING ERROR. It's so dangerous too, because my engine could just BLOW UP. Anywhoooo, both cars just BURN OIL LIKE GAS. I repeat, BURN OIL LIKE GAS. I need to check the oil every (at the most) 2 weeks because of how badly oil is just burning up. Also, there is a "Check Engine" code being thrown for something small in the EVAP System. Same cars, 11 years apart. Same problems!? I don't think that is right WHATSOEVER. I have researched ongoing recalls & expired recalls. To my disappointment, I find NOTHING. This is a MAJOR ISSUE. There is absolutely zero irony in 2 cars, being 11 years apart, newer one being a 6 speed manual, having the SAME ISSUES EXACTLY. I was so happy to get a newer one, thinking, "oh there can't be possibly anything wrong with this model". WRONG. Absolutely, positively NO CAR should have to dump almost 5 quarts of oil in your car every 1000 miles or less. I constantly need to buy 1 or 2 quarts of oil BIWEEKLY for this 2015 Hyundai Accent. I can't just get rid of it, cars are expensive! This is absolutely the manufacturers problem. So I am going above their heads to get this taken care of. Monday, I want to try and call Hyundai, either the one near me, or some "hotline". This is unacceptable. My car will show that "low oil pressure" light and my heart just drops. "I just put oil in it!". I say to myself. Do not get me wrong. I love my car. I want my car taken care of. As, when I bought it, Blaise Alexander *apparently* didn't know about it. And they flat out lied about the check engine light! I've had numerous people look at it. They hardly have an answer. Its expensive and labor intensive. Please help me solve this problem. I am NOT the only one. -Morgan Buerk

Airbag light turns on/off. Had dealership investigate and found that it is related to the occupancy sensor mat in the passenger seat. Code was reset (no work performed) and remained off 7 months and now is back on. Could be related to weather (comes on more frequently during fall & winter). Dealer states it is a B1767 code and will need OCS mat replaced.

AT FIRST IN THE BEGINNING MY CAR DOES IT ONCE IN A BLUE MOON; HOWEVER NOW EVERYDAY FOR THE PAST TWO MONTHS MY CAR WOULD POWER DOWN WHILE BEING AT A RED LIGHT, STOP SIGN, OR IN MOTION. WHEN IT POWERS DOWN THE ENGINE AND BATTERY LIGHTS COMES ON. I WOULD HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND RESTART MY CAR. IT NORMALLY DOES IT TWICE EVERYDAY. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD FOR MYSELF AND MY BABY. I'M SCARED THAT A CAR WOULD COME UP BEHIND AND HIT ME WHILE MY BABY IS IN THE CAR. I FEAR OUR LIVES. WHEN I TOOK IT TO AUTOZONE FOR THEM TO CHECK AND SEE WHY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON THE CODE WAS ALWAYS CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I WENT TO GO GET THAT FIX AND MY CAR IS STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. ALSO, WHEN MY CAR IS IN MOTION THE RPM DOESN'T MOVE IT STAYS AT 0. ALSO, THE SENSOR FOR THE PASSENGER AIR BAG ISN'T WORKING. WHEN SOMEBODY IS SITTING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS OFF, BUT WHEN SOMEBODY ISN'T SITTING THERE THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON. I HAVEN'T BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS.

THE CAR IS UNPREDICTABLE AND HAZARDOUS TO ME AND EVERYONE IN TRAFFIC. 6/8/15: WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR COULD NOT MOVE. AFTER I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND THEN TURNED IT ON AGAIN, THE PROBLEM WAS GONE AND I COULD DRIVE. 7/27/15: THE PROBLEM RECURRED IN A SIMILAR FASHION, AGAIN AFTER STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. ONLY THIS TIME MULTIPLE LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASH BOARD, AND THE CAR COULD NOT MOVE. AFTER RESTARTING I COULD KEEP DRIVING. 9/24/15: WHILE DRIVING, MULTIPLE LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASH BOARD. A FEW MOMENTS LATER THEY WENT OFF, BUT THE TRIP ODOMETERS A/B RESET THEMSELVES TO 0. 1/17/17: THE SAME PROBLEM RECURRED. WHILE DRIVING, MULTIPLE LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASH BOARD. A FEW MOMENTS LATER THEY WENT OFF, BUT THE TRIP ODOMETERS A/B RESET THEMSELVES TO 0. REPAIRS TO FIX THE PROBLEM: THE CLUSTER WAS REPLACED. THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED. BUT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECURRING AGAIN. *TR

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I'M REPORTING THIS DEFECT. I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW CAR ON 11/28/2015 LESS THAN A WEEK LATER WHILE DRIVING THE NORMAL SPEED LIMIT THE CAR BEGAN TO POWER DOWN AND THE ENGINE LIGHT AND BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK THEN RESTART THE CAR AGAIN THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER TO BE SERVICED. I WAS TOLD A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS NEEDED, THE THE TORQUE CONVERTER LOCKED UP AND THIS IS WHAT CAUSED THE CAR TO POWER DOWN AND ENGINE LIGHT AND BATTERY LIGHT TO COME ON. ANYWAY A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS PUT IN THE CAR AND I WAS GIVEN THE CAR BACK. THE CAR WAS IN THE DEALER SERVICE SHOP FOR A WEEK. NOW LESS THAN A WEEK LATER THE CAR IS DOING IT AGAIN, POWERING DOWN WHILE DRIVING, THEN ENGINE LIGHT AND BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON. THIS IS A SAFETY RISK!!! I HAVE A CHILD I FEAR FOR OUR LIFE. I REPORTED THIS TO CONSUMER AFFAIRS, BBB, THE POTAMKIN HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR, HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE,NHSTA AND ANYONE WHO WOULD LISTEN!. ALL I GET IS THE RUN AROUND, WELL, THIS IS GOING TO BETHE SECOND TIME THE CAR IS GOING TO BE SERVICED FOR THIS SAFETY RISK.

1) 6/8/15: WHEN I STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR STALLED. AFTER I TURNED IT OFF AND TURNED IT ON AGAIN, THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARED. 2) 7/27/15: A SIMILAR SITUATION RECURRED, AGAIN AFTER STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THIS TIME MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON, INCLUDING ENGINE OIL PRESSURE, PARKING BRAKE/BRAKE FLUID AND SOMETHING ELSE. THE CAR STALLED AGAIN. AND AGAIN AFTER TURNING IT OFF AND ON THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARED AND THEN I COULD DRIVE. 3) 9/24/15: I WAS DRIVING AT THE SPEED OF 60 MPH. SUDDENLY MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND I WAS AFRAID THAT THE CAR CAN STALL. FORTUNATELY, IT DIDN'T HAPPEN. THE LIGHTS STAYED THERE FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN DISAPPEARED. BUT ANOTHER WEIRD EFFECT OCCURRED: TRIP A MILES, WHICH WAS ABOUT 50, RESET AND STARTED FROM 0. MOST LIKELY IT IS A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION. WITH THIS ISSUE THE CAR IS UNPREDICTABLE, UNRELIABLE AND DANGEROUS.

I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR WHICH WAS STATED TO BE BRAND NEW FOR JUST ABOUT 3 MONTH. A FEW WEEKS AGO I HAD TO PULL OVER FOR A FLAT TIRE. THIS WEEK SAME THING. WHEN THE CAR WAS TOWED TO ROUTE 60 HYUNDAI I WAS TOLD THE DAMAGE WAS FRONT END DAMAGE CAUSING THE 3 MONTH OLD TIRES TO WEAR TO THE CORDS. THESE ARE HANKOOK TIRES WHICH HAVE BEEN SUBJECT TO MANY CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS. ROUTE 60 BASICALLY CALLED ME A LIAR AND INSISTED I CAUSED THE FRONT END DAMAGE. THIS CAR IS UNSAFE AND THIS DEALERSHIP SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR NOT HONORING THEIR CONTRACT AND WARRANTY.
