DEALER WANTS TO START BY REPLACING AIR BAG PARTS UNTIL LIGHT GOES OFF (STARTING WITH THE $600 CHIP). DEALER CLAIMS RECALL WAS PERFORMED ON THIS CAR IN JULY 1995. IN 1996, THIS VEHICLE WAS IN A "FENDER BENDER" BUT AIR BAG LIGHT DID NOT COME ON AND AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THIS VEHICLE WAS NEVER IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT AND THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON WHY THE AIR BAG SYSTEM SHOULD JUST FAIL OUT OF THE BLUE.*AK

SINCE NOVEMBER OF 1997 I HAVE HAD ON GOING PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. THERE HAS BEEN ONE DEFAULT AFTER ANOTHER. IN NOVEMBER OF 1997 THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED IN JULY OF 1999, SINCE REPACEMENT OF TRANSMISSION THE WATERPUMP, AND TIMING WERE REPLACED, AND THE RADIATOR WAS REPAIRED. NOW THIS NEW PROBLEM HAS AROSE WITH THE ENGINE. ONE OTHER THING NOT MENTIONED BEFORE IS THE CAR STOPS OR SHUTS OFF WITH NO GAGE INDICATION AT ALL.

RIGHT REAR TRAILING ARM BOLT HAD BEEN BROKEN FOR QUITE SOME TIME. BOLT IS RUSTED AND PITTED, 3 MECHANICS, A WELDER, AND A TOOL MAKER ALL CONCUR THAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN BROKEN FOR WELL OVER A YEAR. THE BOLT IS THE ONE THAT CONNECTS THE TRAILING ARM TO THE FRAME. IT HAD BEEN BROKEN FOR LONG ENOUGH TO PULL THROUGH THE FRAME TEARING IT. BOLT HAD BEEN WORKING FREE FOR THAT TIME. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR A NOISE PREVIOUS TO THE BOLT COMING FREE AND THE SLOW SPEED THE WHOLE REAR END WOULD HAVE PROBABLY COME APART RESULTING IN (AT INTERSTATE SPEED) INJURY AND MOST PROBABLY A FATALITY.

OTHER PROBLEMS INCLUDE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, I.E., ALTERNATOR, BATTERY, ETC. BUT MOST PREVELANT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. I RECENTLY HAD TO COMPLETELY REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION, TORCK CONVERTER, KICK-DOWN SWITCH AT A COST OF APPROX. $3,100. WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND HYUNDAI, I WAS COMPLETELY BLOWN-OFF BY BOTH. I FEEL THESE ARE EXCESSIVE REPAIRS FOR A 3 YEAR OLD CAR THAT HAS BEEN SERVICED AND MAINTENANCED REGULARLY.
