How to read a Hyundai Elantra VIN — every digit explained

Every Hyundai Elantra carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Elantra.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Elantra VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Risk. Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix. Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Air Bags:frontal:sensor/control Module-inactive11V179000

What's wrong. Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 elantra vehicles manufactured from july 14, 2006, through august 29, 2007. The driver's seat track position sensor determines the seat's fore and aft position and allows the driver's frontal air bag to deploy at the pressure appropriate for that seating position, with a lower pressure deployment in the most forward seating positions. The air bag control module may receive an unstable electrical signal from the seat track position sensor such that, in a crash that requires driver frontal airbag deployment, the driver's airbag may deploy at the higher pressure than intended if the seat was position in one of the forward positions in which a lower pressure deployment is intended.

Risk. A higher pressure deployment than intended increases the risk of injury resulting from airbag deployment.

Fix. Dealers will reprogram the air bag control module free of charge. The safety recall is expecting to begin during april 2011. Owners may contact hyundai's customer assistance center at 1-800-633-5151.

What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The evaporative emission control systems can apply excessive vacuum to the fuel tanks during the canister purge cycle. If excessive vacuum is applied, minor fuel tank distortion can result. A small crack could develop on the upper fuel tank surface. The "check engine" light would then illuminate and, in some cases, the vehicle driver may notice a gasoline odor.

Risk. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.

Fix. Dealers will pressure check the vehicle's fuel tank to determine if it has cracked. If the fuel tank has cracked, it will be replaced.

Visibility:windshield Wiper/washer:motor97V026000

What's wrong. The windshield wiper motor circuit breaker electrical contacts were contaminated during assembly.

Risk. This contamination interferes with the electrical circuit continuity and prevents the windshield wiper motor from operating. Inoperative windshield wipers can contribute to reduced visibility during inclement weather increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Fix. Dealers will remove the contaminants from the windshield wiper motor circuit breaker contacts.

1995 Hyundai Elantra recalls 1

Air Bags:frontal95V101000

What's wrong. The driver's side air bag was improperly assembled and could cause the air bag warning light to illuminate from increased electrical resistance.

Risk. An increase in the electrical resistance might prevent the air bag from activating during a vehicle crash.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the air bag assembly wiring harness connector to determine if it contains a terminal holder. If it does not, one will be installed.

Electrical System:alternator/generator/regulator94V090000

What's wrong. In some vehicles, the manufacturer's protective internal coating of the electronic crank angle sensor does not meet specifications, which can cause an open circuit at high operating temperatures. This can cause the vehicle to stall.

Risk. Engine stalling has the potential to result in a vehicle crash if it occurs while the vehicle is moving.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the crank angle sensor to determine whether the sensor is involved in the recall, and replace any sensor found with the defective internal coating.

2014 Elantra

I was on a highway driving the vehicle (a 2014 hyundai elantra) at highway speed when it inexplicably "stalled" for lack of a better term. I quickly lost speed and could not accelerate despite the fact that i was pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor at one point. The vehicle simply did not respond. There was plenty of gas in the vehicle, so i had not run out of gas. The vehicle appeared to have shut off in the middle of operation. This resulted in a major accident on a highway where i, along with the other occupants within the vehicle, sustained significant injuries. Notably, no airbags deployed--even though the vehicle was struck several times from different angles and sustained heavy damage, including being crushed in from the rear. *tr

2025 Elantra

Car was operating fine, then when we got on the highway, we noticed the check engine light had come on but were unable to get off the highway. The vehicle then began slowing down despite pressing down on the gas pedal. Vehicle continued to slow to about 15mph and we were hit by another car.

2014 Elantra

I was turning into a parking space at my work and almost at a complete stop when the engine suddenly revved and accelerated, causing my car to jump the curb and hit a light pole. My foot was on the brake the whole time as i was coming to a stop. It happened so fast. One minute i was parking and the next second i hit the pole. I sustain several injuries and am waiting to hear about my car.

2008 Elantra

Leaving the parking lot at walgreen in tonawanda,ny. I was backing out with my foot on the brake. Putting the car in drive.the car leaped into a very high accelerated speed like a jet with the engine racing. The brake did not help. The car hit the barrier between the sidewalk and the store and the engine burst into flames.the distance was only a matter of yards.the airbags and seat belt kept me from going thru the windshield the force of the crash totaled the car. There was no one in this area of the parking lot thank goodness it was 10am sunday morning. I do not know who called the fire dept and police.. This is a very serious problem. This situation happen so fast you don,t have time to blink. I am now left with no car and a twisted back.

The contact owns a 2025 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while his wife was pulling into a customer's driveway at 5 MPH, the vehicle stalled and rolled back and crashed into a parked Ford F-150. The brake pedal was applied, but the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle failed to restart. There were no warning lights illuminated. The collision feature failed to engage. There was no fire or airbag deployment. A police report was filed. The driver sustained injuries to her neck and shoulder, and medical attention was provided at the hospital. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 4,000.

2018 Elantra

Initial Fault Code: P0303 Replaced all 4 spark plugs and all 4 ignition coils. The check engine light extinguished momentarily but returned, logging P0303 and a new P0301 Replaced all 4 fuel injectors. CEL extinguished momentarily and then returned, logging P0303. Replaced the entire engine electrical harness. Concurrently, all related electrical components and connectors were meticulously cleaned with professional contact cleaner. CEL extinguished for significantly longer period of time, and then returned, re-logging P0303 and P0301. Thid suggested the ECU was "handshaking" with new components but re-logging the fault upon detecting the persistent core issue. A full compression test was performed. All cylinders reported results within specification. Using a borescope I inspected cylinder walls in piston tops. There was significant carbon residue buildup but nothing out of the ordinary for similar GDI engines. I still performed a PEA GDI specific chemical cleaning. It was a a little smoother afterwards, but the misfire persisted and CEL remained on. I also removed, cleaned, and tested common sensor faults, with no result. Also p0128 code and no start / electrical drain, and engine light started flashing numerous occasions had to stop the vehicle. I tried swapping the coils, but all that proved was that the coil was good, I did a power and ground test, it passed the connector had 12 plus volt power and a perfect resistance to static ground. The signal wire from the coil connector had perfect continuity to the ECU but had OL to chassis ground showing there was no short. A test light was used to see if anything was coming from the signal wire to the ignition coil and that test failed, there was no signal pulse. The diagnostic process has definitively proven a component-level failure inside the engine control unit. See attached file for more detailed information.

When i pulled out of my drive way at about 5 mph and began increasing speed (10-15 mph), i felt like my front tires may have needed air. I checked my dash and confirmed that all the sensors for tire pressure were on and working and the air pressure seemed to be fine. I began to increase speed and by this time was traveling east bound at aprox. 55 mph on the hwy, when the front left tire suddenly felt loose. I wasn't sure if it was my tire or the road itself but before i could even switch lanes my tire seemed to jerk me over to the left side of the road. My back tire fell off the ledge of the hwy and caused me to pull the wheel to try to correct the imbalance but i didn't have enough time before the steering wheel was wandering off toward the left causing me to smash head on into a tree into the center divider.

My husband and i bought 2 brand new 2008 hyundai elantra gls pzev engines on june 6, 2008. On july 2, 2008 with less than 400 miles on my husband's car he stopped in the middle of a highway going 55 miles an hour and because of him being in the left hand land there ended up a 3 car accident. My husband did not get hit, but in order to avoid him a car swerved, got rear-ended and pushed into an 18 wheeler on rte 24 in millburn nj. There is a police report because of this. It turns out hyundai know there is a fuel pump problem. Our service manager told us after road side assistant towed my husband's elantra up from nj to goshen ny. The service manager also said hyundai is aware of this problem but are not ordering a recall to have the 2008 fuel pumps changed. We called hyundai to find out why there is no recall and they said our service manager was lying about the fuel pumps. But at the same time they said korea stopped making the fuel pumps and are re-designing a new one. To date they have no idea when the fuel pumps will be shipped from korea. But they are still denying there is a problem. If you go to www.edmunds.com and then click on carspace discussion and type in 2008 hyundai elantra you will see people are getting stranded all over the us. Hyundai can't fix the problem but yet they are leaving these unsafe cars on the road. We had ours less than a month. My service manager said the fuel pumps are going from 5 miles to 1500 miles and that hyundai does not fix them till they go. My husband was almost killed on july 2, 2008 due to the fuel pump. I have less than 200 miles on my car and any day my car too can have the same thing happen. Please do something. Hyundai won't. All they do si tow you to your hometown and our nearest dealer because they know there is a problem. We have a police report showing my husband's car just stopped and it is the fuel pump and it is not only happening to us, it is a major problem with the 2008 hyundai elantra's. *tr

I was out running errands and I was taking a break Midway through the day and I had the seat laid back and the car was off the key wasn't even turned forward and I just started to fall asleep when I started feeling something get really hot I opened my eyes and the car was full of thick black smoke so I swung the door open and with all the smoke went out my passenger seat was on fire on the bottom of the seat I burned my hand really bad in the process of trying to put it out which I have some lawyers working on getting me compensated for all this but it seems to have started in the seat heater all of the wires for the seat heater are all melted and you can clearly see how they started to catch the foam on fire I also googled it and there's been a few other cases of people's Hyundai's catching on fire sitting in their driveway and it started in the seat on their cars too I think I'm the first person that's actually been hurt by it though my hand was burned so bad that the hospital wanted me to go to the burn center I was not able to go to the burn center for financial reasons and work reasons which it ended up putting me out of work anyways I still don't have a feeling in three of my fingers on the ends of them and this whole situation really screwed things up for me and it almost killed me.

I have been encountering a series of troubling and erratic issues with my vehicle. These problems occur under various driving conditions, including acceleration, steady-state driving, and braking. However, the most prevalent and problematic occurrences seem to transpire during acceleration and braking. During acceleration, I've observed inconsistent behavior. Sometimes, the car shifts smoothly, with minimal torque drop between gears. On other occasions, the vehicle accelerates initially but then abruptly loses all power between gears, resembling the sensation of someone engaging the clutch in a manual vehicle and shifting slowly. This results in a temporary power loss lasting 1-2 seconds, followed by an over-revving and clutch slip, leading to an unintended surge in acceleration. The issues I've encountered during braking typically begin with a chattering noise and vibrations that seem to be an imbalanced or shocked reciprocating mass, I can assume maybe one of the clutches/flywheel . This is often followed by decreased brake pedal linearity, requiring increased brake pedal pressure to stop. This normally results in an unintended aggressive forward jerk just before coming to a stop, akin to someone releasing a clutch on a manual transmission vehicle too quickly when downshifting while the engine speed is too low. One night I went to get diapers for my baby and it was raining and I hit the breaks and the breaks lost control and I crashed into a median wall and my car kept spinning around. Ambulance were called and I was admitted to the hospital with minor injuries.

2017 Elantra

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated upon coming to a complete stop, the vehicle accelerated unintendedly over a concrete bar and drove up a hill. The contact depressed the brake pedal but to no avail. The contact steered the vehicle to the right direction to avoid entering a pool. She then crashed into multiple objects including trees, concrete parking bars, and multiple vehicles before coming to a stop. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The contact was taken to the hospital by ambulance and was treated for injuries to her neck and back. A police report was filed. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to an independent tow yard where it was destroyed. Parking barriers and trees were damaged as a result of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 25,000.

We took our 17 year old grandson to the hospital to be checked out because of a headache but other than that there were no injuries. My vehicle was taken to a repair shop and now to a hyundai dealership. My concern is; there have been two (2) front axles put in my car and neither worked. The dealership said they were defective. They ordered a third (3) one and it was defective. They did not install it. Now they have ordered the fourth (4) axle to install, if it isn't defective. Drove my 2015 Hyundai Elantra on the coldest day of the year to an appointment. Car was fully warmed up. Pulled into a gas station to park and was going less than 3 mph, making a left hand turn into the space. Elantra suddenly accelerated hard and the car hit a cement pole, causing extensive front end damage. If car had full insurance coverage, it would have been a write off. Hood crumpled, radiator damaged, front grill broken, bent the engine bar in half. Significant damage but the air bag did not deploy. Had to have it towed home 35 miles. Damage was in the middle of the front of the car, so I was already in the parking space. No warning lights of any sort before this happened. Very dangerous and I would never buy another Hyundai. I bought this car brand new in 2015 and have had recalls taken care of (anti theft software one). Over the course of owning this car, other odd things have occurred as well, such as white smoke coming out of the engine upon acceleration, accelerated wear on the tires due to the back end, and engine will suddenly stop for no reason while driving (this happened twice) Inferior product!

This vehicle is hazardous to be on the road. It has front end steering and suspension problems. It has a terrible vibration from 35 mph and up. If traveling on the highway the wheel shakes so badly that your hands go numb. I have had the vehicle in for service and repeated time over a two and a half year period, and the dealership has done nothing. I have also spoken with the manufacturers on several occasions, and have done nothing. It has gotten to the point that i had an accident, because of these problems. I now have a permanent injury that i will live with for the rest of my life, and they still do not care. I have 2 small children, and i am afraid every time i leave the house that something will happen with this vehicle, and one of my children get injured. Fortunately, with my accident i was alone. In my accident my steering locked and i hit a stone embankment at about 40 mph with the front end and my air bag also did not deploy. Unfortunately i am stuck driving this vehicle, when it is unsafe, and unfit to be on the road. It is a hazard to my family, and all others on the road with me. I sincerely hope something can be done to these dealerships, and manufacturers to ensure they are selling our consumers a safe and reliable vehicle. *la

A car with no occupant was sitting to car spaces from the corner and my car struck the car. I got out of my car and saw my right front wheel laying on the ground and my right front fender was smashed. I called the police and aaa. When triple aaa arrived the driver said that my axle was bent. My air back did not implod. The police came and so summons was given, just a repotr that it was a non-reportable accident. My car has been in a collision shop since that day. The shop called and said there would be a delay because the axle the manufacture sent was damaged!! The shop had to order another axle . I went on line to determine if this model has had other report of axle and suspension defects and there was one report that was exactly the same as mine. Is it possible that this model may be a defected ? I did not take any pictures i had lost my cell phone

Takata recall on 9/23/2018, about an hour after a rainstorm (car was garaged during storm) my car was in motion at 40 mph in the left lane on a curve of a southbound interstate exit i275. The car suddenly went sideways, and began fishtailing. I tried to pump the breaks but they were not working. The vehicle then smashed the front side of bumper into the guard rail, and pushed me across two traffic lanes. The vehicle stopped in the right lane, facing north in a southbound exit. I tried to put it in reverse to get into the shoulder, and there was no acceleration. The engine had shut off on me while driving on the interstate. I do not know what failed the engine, or why it shut off. Hyundai corporate was contacted and they opened a case, and performed a full inspection. On 11/12/18 hyundai claimed "we cannot agree that the accident involved a product defect and are declining any financial assistance." a third party mechanic was then contacted, and found code c1555 and a failing vvti cylinoid. There is no recall. There is no way to prove this car is unsafe with the routes i have taken so far. I will not accept this answer. The engine of this car shut off and could have been fatal. It is also terrifying to think about who would to be blamed for such a fatal or dangerous accident since hyundai "couldn't find any defect." i asked for results of the scan and the case manager, christina replied that i am not authorized to see them, for "results are for proprietary use only." this company needs to own up to their risky product!
