I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND THE MOMENT I TRIED TO STOP AT THE TRAFFIC STOP SIGN THE LOWER ARM CONTROL FROM THE DRIVER SIDE BROKE AND THE WHEEL BROKE AND THE CAR SLID. THANKS GOD IT WAS AT NIGHT AND NO CARS WERE THERE. I REMEMBER THE NIGHT BEFORE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I CALLED MY INSURANCE AND THEY SENT ME A TOWING TRUCK TO MOVE THE CAR. I DIDN'T REPAIR THE CAR BECAUSE IT WAS A BIG MESS. I TOOK SOME PICTURES OF IT AND THE TOWING COMPANY GUY ALSO. I REMEMBER I WENT TO HYUNDAI DEALER AND I WAS LOOKING FOR A PART THEIR AND THEY TOOK MY VIN NUMBER TO CHECK FOR THE PART BUT NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT THE RECALL. CAN HYUNDAI COMPANY GIVE ME SOME MONEY BACK THAT I SPENT FOR TOWING AND LOOSING MY CAR BECAUSE OF THIS INCIDENT. I EVEN PAID FOR THE CAR REGISTRATION WEEKS BEFORE. *TR

I HAVE NOTED A RECALL #09V125000 RELATED TO THIS MAKE/MODEL/YEAR BUT FOR SOME REASON MY CAR WITH THE EXACT PROBLEM IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. MY RIGHT FRONT CONTROL ARM COLAPSED. IT WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. WITH THAT SIDE FIXED I TRAVELED ABOUT 3 MILES AND MY LEFT SIDE CONTROL ARM BROKE. MY MECHANIC AND I WERE COMPLEXED, BUT AFTER RESEARCH I FOUND THIS PROBLEM EXIST AND RECALLS ISSUED. AFTER CONTACTING HYUNDA THEY SAID THIS VEHICLE VIN# WAS NOT COVERED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. SOMETHING IN THE RECORDS OF THIS CAR MUST BE IN ERROR.

I HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED ON MARCH 3, 2007, IT PASSED INSPECTION. ON MARCH 23, 2007 LOST THE BRAKES. UPON DEALER'S INSPECTION OF THE BRAKES,THEY FOUND THE PADS CAME COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE SHOES. ALSO, THE WHEEL CYLINDERS WERE LEAKING. THE BRAKES AND WHEEL CYLINDERS WERE FINE 3 WEEKS PRIOR TO THEM BLOWING APART. NOW I AM OUT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS AND AM VERY THANKFUL THIS OCCURRED ON A BACK ROAD AND NOT ON A HIGHWAY. DT: THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A THUMPING NOISE COMING FROM THE BRAKES. THIS OCCURRED AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR A WHILE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP THREE TIMES. THE FIRST TIME THEY REPLACED THE CYLINDER, TURNED THE REAR DRUMS, AND ROUNDED OUT THE LETTER. THE SECOND AND THIRD TIMES THE DEALERSHIP ROUNDED OUT THE LETTER AGAIN. THE INSIDE OF THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY HAS FOGGED UP CAUSING THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE LAMP TO DIMINISH TO THE POINT WHERE I FEEL IT IS DANGEROUS AND I NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH HYUNDAI AT THE CORPORATE LEVEL AND THEY BASICALLY SAID THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO CLEAN THE INSIDE OF THE ASSEMBLY AND I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THEM AT MY EXPENSE. CAR RECALLED FOR "SALT BELT CORROSION" REPAIRS IN 2002. ORIGINAL OWNER SOLD CAR BACK TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. REPAIRS WERE NEVER DONE.WHEN I BOUGHT THIS USED HYUNDAI ELANTRA IN LATE 2002, IT HAD LESS THAN 13K MILES ON ITS ODOMETER. IT WAS SERVICED AT A 2ND HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP UNTIL 2012, WHEN ITS 10 YR/ 100 K MI WARRANTY EXPIRED. TODAY, EVEN THOUGH IT STILL HAS < 100 K ON ITS ODOMETER, THE ENTIRE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE IS SO BADLY RUSTED THAT I'VE BEEN TOLD BY TWO DIFFERENT SOURCES THAT THE CORROSION ON THE UNDERSIDE IS SO BAD THAT, DURING A 50 MPH OR GREATER ACCIDENT, IT IS LIKELY THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE CAR COULD FALL ONTO THE HIGHWAY, WHILE IT KEPT MOVING FORWARD, DECAPITATING EVERYONE INSIDE. I HEARD A NOISE IN THE REAR OF MY HYUNDAI ELANTRA 02 AND UPON BRINGING IT TO A SERVICE STATION WAS INFORMED THAT THE LEFT REAR CROSS MEMBER WAS CORRODE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRABLE. THERE WAS A CURRENT RECALL FOR THIS SAME ISSUE, HOWEVER THE 02 ELANTRA WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. THIS LEFT ME WITH AN 11 YEAR OLD VEHICLE THAT HAD NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND HAD BEEN HOUSED INSIDE A GARAGE IN INCLEMENT WEATHER THAT WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

CLUTCH FAILURE I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW AND AT 42,196 MILES THE CLUTCH WENT OUT, DEALER CLAIMS NORMAL WEAR. THE CAR NOW HAS 73,026 MILES AND AGAIN THE CLUTCH NEEDED REPLACED. THIS STARTED WHEN THE REPLACED CLUTCH HAD LESS THEN 29,000 MILES ON IT. AGAIN THEY CLAIM NORMAL WEAR. THE CLUTCH PEDAL HAS NO PRESSURE WHEN ENGAGED AND THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT. CUSTOMER SERVICE OR DEALER WILL DO NOTHING AND I HAD TO PAY FOR ANOTHER CLUTCH. IF YOU LOOK AT THE LIST OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS PROBLEM IT HAS TO BE A DEFECTIVE CLUTCH OR TRANSMISSION. MY 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA'S CLUTCH HAS FAILED AGAIN AFTER JUST 25000 MILES. I HAVE HAD THE CLUTCH REPLACED ONCE, AT WHICH POINT THE MILEAGE WAS ONLY 22000. I DO NOT HAVE BAD DRIVING HABITS, TO WHICH MY ENTIRE FAMILY WILL ATTEST. NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER DRIVEN MY CAR. THE COST TO ME OF THIS PROBLEM WAS $800 THE FIRST TIME AND HAS BEEN ESTIMATED TO BE BETWEEN $1150 AND $1250. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT MANY OTHERS HAVE SUFFERED SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE CLUTCH, YET HYUNDAI HAS MADE NO ATTEMPT TO ASSUME BLAME FOR THE PROBLEM OR TO HELP WITH REPAIR COSTS. ON OCTOBER 28TH, 2016 THE LOWER, DRIVER'S SIDE, FRONT CONTROL ARM DISINTEGRATED WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER ELANTRA IN A PARKING LOT. SHE WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN TO LEAVE THE LOT WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AS IT MADE A "TERRIBLE GRINDING NOISE." THE NEXT DAY I REMOVED THE WHEEL AND DISCOVERED THE CONTROL ARM WAS TORN IN TWO SECTIONS AND BADLY CORRODED. I WENT TO TWO HYUNDAI DEALERS TO TRACK DOWN A NEW PART. NEITHER DEALER MENTIONED THE FACT THAT THIS MODEL HYUNDAI HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR PRECISELY THIS PROBLEM. WHEN I LEARNED OF THIS PROBLEM I CONTACTED HYUNDAI MOTORS. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE RECALL ONLY APPLIED TO VEHICLES PURCHASED OR REGISTERED IN THE SO-CALLED "SALT BELT" STATES. MY WIFE BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW IN COLORADO AND HAS NEVER DRIVEN IT IN THE "SALT BELT." YET IT SUFFERED THE SAME CORROSION AND FAILURE AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS FAILURE BECAUSE THE CORROSION IS INSIDE THE CONTROL ARM AND CANNOT BE DETECTED BY A NORMAL VISUAL INSPECTION. I SUSPECT THAT THE FAILURE THAT SHOWED UP YEARS AGO IN THE "SALT BELT" CARS IS NOW APPEARING IN OLDER CARS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. HYUNDAI APPARENTLY DOES NOT GIVE A [XXX]. I SUGGEST THE NHSTA IMPOSE A NATIONWIDE MANDATORY RECALL OF THESE VEHICLES. IF IT OCCURRED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS FAILURE WOULD RESULT IN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF CONTROL, RESULTING IN SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH FOR PASSENGERS IN THE CAR. MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC, WHO SAID THE RIGHT FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM AND BALL JOINT WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED AND COLLAPSED. HYUNDAI HAD ISSUED A RECALL (#09V125000) FOR MY VEHICLE DUE TO REPORTED COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME CONDITION, AND I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO A HYUNDAI DEALER IN JULY 2009. AFTER INSPECTION, THE ONLY ACTION THEY TOOK WAS TO INSTALL A PLUG KIT AND APPLY RUST PREVENTATIVE AND UNDERCOATING. OBVIOUSLY THIS DID NOT WORK IN THE LONG TERM. I WAS NEVER INFORMED OF THIS RECALL. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS CAR AND HAVE LIVED AT MY CURRENT ADDRESS SINCE APRIL 2000. I HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF OTHER RECALLS IN THE PAST BY MAIL. AT THIS POINT, THE SHOP DID A FULL SAFETY INSPECTION OF THE CAR AND I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AT WHICH I PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2002, MIKE KELLY HYUNDAI, BUTLER PA. SINCE THE PARTS WHERE ON BACKORDER, I WAITED ALMOST 2 WEEKS FOR MY CAR TO BE REPAIRED. FROM THE RESEARCH I HAVE DONE ONLINE IT'S THAT THE EVAP CANISTOR HAS FAILED AND IT'S PUSHING CHARCOAL THRU THE FUEL LINES. WHAT IF THAT GETS INTO THE FUEL TANK AND THE PUMP SUCKS IT UP? DON'T THINK THAT WOULD BE A GOOD THING. BUT THE GAS THAT COMES OUT IS STARTING TO EAT AWAY THE PAINT BECAUSE IT DOES IT MULTIPLE TIMES EACH TIME I'M REFUELING. I OWN A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHEN I BOUGHT IT USED IN 2005 IT RAN VERY QUIET. A FEW MONTHS AGO I NOTICED IT SEEMED A LITTLE LOUDER. LAST WEEK THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON SO I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC. FOUND OUT THERE IS A CRACK IN THE MANIFOLD. I AM AWARE THAT MANY OTHER 2002 ELANTRAS HAVE THIS PROBLEM, AND THAT THERE WAS ACTUALLY A RECALL ON SOME OF THEM. MY CAR HOWEVER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CONSUMER ASSISTANCE DEPT. AND WAS SENT TO THEIR DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE CAR CHECKED OUT AFTER WHICH I WAS TOLD THAT THE CRACK IN MY MANIFOLD DID NOT MATCH THE ONES THAT THE RECALL COVERED. HOW RIDICULOUS. OBVIOUSLY THEIR IS A PROBLEM WITH ALL OF THE MANIFOLDS IN THESE 2002 ELANTRAS OTHER WISE THEY WOULD NOT ALL BE CRACKING. FEBRUARY 2009 I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE PERTAINING TO MY HYUNDAI ELANTRA 2002-THE ELECTRICAL WIRING UNDER THE DRIVERS SEAT HAVING SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. I TOOK MY CAR IN AND THEY DID THE RECALL WORK AND NO PROBLEM. NEXT MORNING, I GO OUT TO MY CAR AND TURN THE KEY AND IT IS DEAD!!! NOTHING !!! SO I GAVE IT THE ALL OR NOTHING JIGGLE OF THIS THAT AND THE OTHER THING-AND ALAS! IT STARTED. I BRUSHED IT OFF AS A FLUKE-THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED FOUR TIMES WITHIN A MONTH AND TODAY IT IS STILL SITTING WHERE I PARKED IT THIS MORNING. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI DEALER TWICE TODAY JUST TO PICK HIS BRAINS AND GIVE ME SOME IDEA AS TO WHAT IT MIGHT BE CAUSING THIS-THE BATTERY IS NEW, TRIED JUMPING IT EARLIER TODAY. THE SHIFTER DOES NOT SEEM LIKE IT WANTS TO MOVE AT ALL EVEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL-THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED IT MIGHT BE THE ELECTRONIC SWITCH FOR THE SHIFTER-THIS MADE SENSE SINCE THE WIRING CORRECTION IS LOCATED IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED, LOST POWER STEERING AND THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE FUEL GAUGE ALSO FAILED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN PERFORMED DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND WAS UNABLE TO DETECT THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE BEGAN OPERATING NORMALLY. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TIGHTENED A COMPONENT ON THE COMPUTER SYSTEM AND ADJUSTED THE RELAY SWITCH. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY IS NOT OPERABLE AND HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,200 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.

WHILE DRIVING IN THE RAIN THE DOOR LIGHT AND DOOR CHIME CAME ON FOR NO REASON. WENT INTO THE DITCH TRYING TO FIND WHAT WAS HAPPENING. EVERY TIME I WASHED THE CAR OR DROVE IN THE RAIN THE SAME THINGS HAPPENED . HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AND WAIT A DAY OR TWO UNTIL SOMETHING DRIED. HEARD THAT HYUNDAI HAD A MANUFACTURING FLAW IN THAT THEY HAVE NOT SEALED THE PILLAR AND FENDER AREA ,THUS WATER JUST RAN TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING. I HAVE REPLACED THE HEADLIGHTS AND/OR FLOOD LIGHTS 7 TIMES, WITHIN THE LAST 3 YEARS. I'VE QUESTIONED THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE REPEATEDLY, BELIEVING THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE CAR. FINALLY, THE LAST SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADMITTED THAT THERE WAS A DEFECT PARTICULAR TO THIS MAKE AND MODEL CAR. I'VE RESEARCHED TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL, AS I BELIEVED THIS WAS A SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD. MY CLOCK IN THE DASHBOARD BLINKS AND LOSES TIME. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE WIRING HARNESSES IN THE DOORS OF THE CAR HAD CORRODED AND CAUSED SHORTAGES OCCASIONALLY IN THE DASHBOARD. I WAS TOLD THIS COULD AFFECT THE CLOCK, THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS, AND POSSIBLY THE HEADLIGHTS. WE HAVE ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH OUR HEADLIGHTS STAYING ON AFTER THEY WERE TURNED OFF AND THE KEY WAS REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION. THE COST OF THIS JOB WOULD BE $900. MY VEHICLE HAS CONTROL ARM RUST AND PERFORATIONS IN THE SUBFRAME, COVERED UNDER AN EXISTING RECALL. HYUNDAI HAS ADMITTED THAT THE PARTS ARE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL, BUT STATES THAT THEY ARE UNABLE TO REPLACE THE SUBFRAME AND CONTROL ARMS DUE TO RUST DAMAGE ON THE FRAME ITSELF. REPLACING THE DAMAGED PORTIONS OF THE FRAME WILL COST WELL OVER THE PRICE OF THE VEHICLE. IF THE SUBFRAME DID NOT HAVE TO BE REPLACED, THE FRAME WOULD LIKELY HOLD FOR SOME TIME AND NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE FRAME DAMAGE IS ONLY AN IMMEDIATE ISSUE BECAUSE THE RECALL REPAIR NEEDS TO BE DONE. HYUNDAI HAS OFFERED ME TO EITHER REPLACE THE FRAME DAMAGE AT MY OWN EXPENSE SO THEY CAN COMPLETE THE RECALL REPAIR, OR TAKE A BUYOUT EQUAL TO THE KELLY BLUE BOOK VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. OTHER COMPENSATION SUCH AS RENTAL FEES WAS REFUSED. IT HAS TAKEN THEM ~25 DAYS SINCE RECEIVING THE VEHICLE TO MAKE THIS OFFER.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE AS SHE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE FROM A TRAFFIC STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE LOWER A FRAME ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE FRAME WAS REPLACED AT THE CONTACTS EXPENSE. LATER, SHE RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V125000 (SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM) AND CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER TO ADVISE THE RECALL REMEDY WAS PERFORMED AT HER EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED SHE WOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR BUT WOULD NEED TO SUBMIT ALL RECEIPTS AND TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR VERIFICATION INSPECTION. THE DEALER ADVISED THE FRONT SUB FRAME WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT ADVISED THE FRAME WAS ALREADY REPLACED. THE CONTACT WAS NOT REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR. NO FURTHER REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 48,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 52,000.

RECEIVED SAFETY RECALL NOTICE REGARDING CONTROL ARM & SUBFRAME ON OUR 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA ON WED. MAR 3,2010. PLAN WAS TO CONTACT DEALERSHIP ON SAT.(MAR 6,2010) TO SCHEDULE APPOINTMENT FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK. RECEIVED A PANIC CALL FROM MY WIFE THAT SOMETHING HAD SNAPPED AS SHE WAS CROSSING THE RHINECLIFF BRIDGE . FORTUNATELY THIS OCCURRED JUST AS SHE WAS EXITING THE TOLL BOOTH. BOOTH OPERATOR ASSISTED HER IN GETTING CAR OUT OF MAIN FLOW OF TRAFFIC AND CALLING A TOW TRUCK. TOW TRUCK DRIVER CONFIRMED THAT CONTROL ARM HAD SNAPPED AS DID THE HYUNADI DEALER (WHERE CAR WAS PURCHASED). DEALER ALSO SAID THERE WERE NUMEROUS OTHER RECALLS CONCERNING THIS VEHICLE THAT THEY WOULD ALSO BE REPAIRING. WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED OF ANY OF THESE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE CONTROL ARM ISSUE AND IN THAT CASE IT FAILED WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF OUR NOTICE. MY QUESTION IS WHY IS IT THAT WERE ONLY NOTIFIED A FEW DAYS AGO REGARDING SUCH AS SERIOUS ISSUE WHEN THE ORIGINAL RECALL NOTICE WAS DATED NEARLY 11 MONTHS AGO. AND NEVER NOTIFIED REGARDING OTHER RECALLS. BY THE WAY THE DEALER HAD THE NERVE TO CHARGE MY WIFE FOR A LOANER VEHICLE AND SAID PARTS WILL NEED TO BE ORDERED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE CONTROL ARM AND THE SUBFRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 130,000.

MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING OUR 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA WHEN SHE HIT SOMEONE FROM BEHIND. ALL OF THE INJURIES FROM THIS ACCIDENT WERE MINOR, BUT THE REAR SEATBELT BECAME A MAJOR CONCERN. OUR GRANDSON, WHO IS ALMOST 2 YEARS OLD, WAS IN HIS CARSEAT IN THE BACK SEAT ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE. HIS SEATBELT DID NOT HOLD HIS SEAT. HE AND THE CARSEAT WERE THROWN FORWARD AGAINST THE BACK OF THE FRONT SEAT. HE HAD SOME BRUISING ON HIS KNEE AND STRUGGLED TO WALK FOR A DAY OR TWO AND THIS SEEMS TO BE THE EXTENT OF HIS INBJURIES. HOWEVER, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THIS HAD BEEN A MORE SERIOUS CRASH. I SPOKE WITH THE LOCAL DEALER, HUNTERS CHEVROLET, AND THEY GAVE ME SOME CRAP ABOUT SOMETIMES THEY WORK AND SOMETIMES THEY DON'T. I AM AN OWNER OF A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. IN 2009 THE PASSENGER SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM OF MY CAR RUSTED AND BROKE IN HALF, WHICH I HAD REPAIRED AT MY EXPENSE. SHORTLY AFTERWARD, I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND TOOK MY CAR IN TO HAVE IT SERVICED. INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE PARTS, HYUNDAI DRILLED A HOLE FOR WATER TO ESCAPE AND PUT A WAX COATING ON THE CONTROL ARMS, WHICH WOULD LATER WEAR OFF. AFTER RECEIVING MY CAR BACK, I WAS UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT THERE WOULD NO LONGER BE AN ISSUE WITH THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS, AS I DO NOT RECALL BEING TOLD IN PERSON NOR IN WRITING THAT I SHOULD CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE STATUS OF SAID PARTS. ADDITIONALLY, AFTER REVIEWING MY RECEIPT, IT DOES NOT STATE ANYTHING ABOUT FURTHER MAINTENANCE OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS. ON MARCH 5, 2013 WHILE TRAVELING ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE, A MAJOR HIGHWAY, MY DRIVER SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE IN HALF, ALMOST CAUSING ME TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. AFTER HAVING MY CAR TOWED TO MY MECHANIC, HE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM WITH THE CONTROL ARM AND RECOMMENDED THAT I HAVE IT TOWED TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO BE REPAIRED. IN MY CONVERSATIONS WITH HYUNDAI EMPLOYEES, HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP EMPLOYEES, AND MY OWN MECHANIC, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. THUS IT IS VERY DISCONCERTING AS A CONSUMER AND A HUMAN BEING TO KNOW THAT HYUNDAI HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE DEFECT AND THE FACT THAT THE RECALL WAS NOT A COMPLETE FIX, AND HAS DONE NOTHING TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION, WHEREBY PUTTING MANY PEOPLES' LIVES IN DANGER.I THINK IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ALL OWNERS OF THESE CARS BE CONTACTED TO WARN THEM ABOUT THE SAFETY HAZARDS THEY POSSESS. *TR

THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM ON MY VEHICLE IS RUSTED OUT, AND IS CRACKED ON BOTH SIDES. LOCAL MECHANIC SAYS IT DOESN'T HAVE LONG BEFORE IT WILL FAIL. RESEARCHED PRICE ON INTERNET AND FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THAT PART. DEALER SAYS THAT MY VIN ISN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, EVEN THOUGH MY CAR WAS SOLD AND DRIVEN IN THE "SNOW BELT" STATES THAT ARE LISTED, AND KENTUCKY ALSO SALTS THE ROADS DURING WINTER. MY VEHICLE IS OBVIOUSLY AFFECTED, BUT THE DEALER TELLS ME TO CALL HYUNDAI, AND HYUNDAI TELLS ME TO GO TO THE DEALER. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT SIMILAR TREATMENT, AND THERE IS LITTLE RECOURSE OFFERED. I WAS TOLD THAT THE NHTSA DECIDED THE DETAILS OF THE RECALL, BUT IT WAS INSUFFICIENT. IN JULY 2008, THE CONTROL ARM OF MY 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA BROKE OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 10 MPH AND APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT. I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AND SKIDDED OFF THE RODE, BUT DID NOT HIT ANY OTHER CAR OR BARRIER. I HAD THE CAR FIXED AT THE CLOSEST AUTO SHOP. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE YESTERDAY FROM HYUNDAI RELATED TO CORROSION OF THE CONTROL ARM. KNOWING THAT IF I HAD BEEN TRAVELING ANY FASTER OR ON A BUSIER ROAD WHEN MY CONTROL ARM BROKE THAT THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS ISSUES, I TRIED TO SCHEDULE THE SOONEST APPOINTMENT TO GET THE OTHER CONTROL ARM CHECKED AND VERIFY THE WORK. THE SOONEST AVAILABLE APPT. THE SHOP GAVE ME WAS MID-JUNE. THIS RESOLUTION LEAVES ME AND MY FAMILY AT RISK UNTIL THAT DATE AND I BELIEVE THAT THAT IS ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE.

ON JULY 30, 2008 I WAS SOLD 2 NEW TIRES BY WALMART AFTER ONLY 20,000 MILES ON A 60,000 MILE WARRANTY. ON AUGUST 2, 2008 I HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO BIG O TIRES BECAUSE THE AIR WAS LOW IN MY NEW FRONT TIRE.. BIG O DISCOVERED 2 NAILS IN MY BACK SIDEWALLS. THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE NEW TIRE HAD NO NEW VALVE STEM. THE RIM OF THAT TIRE WAS BENT (AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT 4 DAYS PRIOR AND WOULD NOT ALLOW THE SEAL AND THE AIR COULD NOT STAY IN THE TIRE. THE PASSENGER SIDE TIRE HAD NOT BEEN PROPERLY SEATED AND COULD RESULT IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF I WERE TO HIT ANYTHING. ALL OF THESE THINGS SHOULD HAVE BEEN APPARENT 4 DAYS EARLIER. ON 11/03/05 I HAD AN ACCIDENT WHERE I REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. I DID NOT REALIZE EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, BUT DID TELL THE POLICE SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH EITHER THE BRAKES OR THE TIRES. THE DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE WAS $1,385.00 AND I HAVE NO IDEA OF THE DAMAGE TO THE OTHER VEHICLE. I SUBSEQUENTLY DISCOVERED, AFTER DUPLICATING THE INCIDENT, MY FOOT WAS ON BOTH THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR. THE BRAKE PEDAL, ON THE HYUNDAI ELANTRA, IS 2.25 INCHES FROM THE ACCELERATOR. A SIMILAR INCIDENT RESULTED IN A 424,000 VEHICLE RECALL AND CORRECTION BY FORD MOTOR CO. IN THEIR CASE THE RELATIONSHIP WAS 1.95 INCHES THIS DISTANCE TO THE ACCELERATOR, ON THE ELANTRA, WAS NOT THE MAJOR ISSUE, THE BRAKE PEDAL IS ONLY ONE INCH ABOVE THE ACCELERATOR AND WHEN FULLY BRAKING THE BRAKE IS ONE INCH BELOW THE ACCELERATOR. WHEN YOU COMBINE THE TWO THE END RESULT MAY BE DEVASTATING. THEY CHANGED PADS, ADJUSTED BRAKES AND REBUILT RIGHT FRONT CALIPER. NO MORE VIBRATION. HYUNDAI WON'T PAY FOR THE REPAIR, SO FOLLOWING THRU WITH LEMON LAW AND HOPING TO GET OUT OF THIS DEATH TRAP. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE REAR PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE BLEW, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER AND LAND ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. MY 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA ACCELERATED AFTER MAKING A HESITATION AND A VERY LOUD NOISE. I CRASHED INTO A TREE HEAD ON AND HAD MULTIPLE INJURIES. A WITNESS SAID HE HEARD THE LOUD NOISE AND THE CAR TAKE OFF WITH A GREAT AMOUNT OF SPEED. AFTER THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE TOWING YARD, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE ACCELERATOR WAS STILL WIDE OPEN WHEN THEY STARTED THE CAR TO MOVE IT. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND FILLED OUT PAPERWORK THEY REQUESTED AND THEY SENT A GENTLEMAN DOWN TO CHECK THE AUTO OVER AND SCAN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM, WITHIN THE MONTH FOLLOWING THE INSPECTION I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM HYUNDAI STATING THE INSPECTION FOUND NO PROBLEMS. I REQUESTED A COPY OF THE REPORT AND WAS DENIED. I CONTACTED AN ATTORNEY AND HYUNDAI ALSO REFUSED TO GIVE HIM THE REPORT STATING "CONFIDENTIALLY PRIVILEGES. MY HUSBAND AND I ARE THE OWNERS OF A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT, AND ARE THE ONLY OWNERS OF RECORD AND HAVE MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE IN A REASONABLE MANNER. ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4 2009, I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH APPROACHING A LEFT TURN LIGHT, WHEN I NEEDED TO STOP SUDDENLY TO AVOID HITTING A CAR THAT STOPPED ABRUPTLY IN FRONT OF ME. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES, I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE CAR BEGAN TO PULL TO THE LEFT, PLACING MY VEHICLE INTO THE ON-COMING TRAFFIC LANE. FORTUNATELY, MY VEHICLE DID NOT HIT ANY OTHER VEHICLES OR ROADSIDE OBSTACLES. AFTER COMING TO A FULL STOP, I MANAGED TO NEGOTIATE THE LEFT TURN, IN ORDER TO MOVE THE VEHICLE OUT OF A 5-POINT INTERSECTION AND INTO A SAFER AREA. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS ENGAGED IN THE TURN, I HEARD METAL GRINDING AGAINST METAL. I PULLED THE CAR OFF OF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY INTO THE FIRST AVAILABLE TURN OFF, WHICH HAPPENED TO BE A CHURCH PARKING LOT. UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER IN A SERVICEABLE CONDITION AND WOULD NEED TO BE TOWED. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR WAS SIGNIFICANTLY TORN BETWEEN THE SHOCK MOUNT AND THE BALL JOINT. THE CORROSION DAMAGE IS SIGNIFICANT ON THE INTERIOR OF THE ARM. IT LOOKS AS IF IT BLEW UP. THERE IS STILL A SMALL PORTION THAT IS STILL ATTACHED BUT IT IS COMPLETELY IMMOBILE. THE TIRE IS PUSHED UP AGAINST THE WHEEL WELL. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE LACK OF COOPERATION THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED FROM HYUNDAI CORPORATE OFFICE RECALL DIVISION. THEY HAVE NOT AGREED TO FIX ANY DAMAGE TO THE CAR AS A RESULT OR REIMBURSE EXPENSES INCURRED DUE TO THE INCIDENT. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THEY CLAIM THE REASON WE DIDN'T GET A NOTICE ABOUT THE RECALL IS BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT EVERYONE TO COME IN AT THE SAME TIME SO THEY ARE SPACING IT OUT! IN ADDITION, THE CONTROL ARMS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE VEHICLE HAD HOLES AND WERE CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND THEY STATED THAT THE CONTROL ARM AND SUBFRAME FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED ACCORDING TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V125000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM) DUE TO THE UNAVAILABILITY OF THE NECESSARY PARTS FOR THE REPAIR. 10/2008, I WAS DRIVING DOWN A STEEP HILL AND BEGAN TO DOWNSHIFT, WHILE BRAKING. MY CAR JERKED AND SKIDDED AT THE BOTTOM. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. A FLATBED TOWED IT AND DETERMINED THAT THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL/TIE ROD HAD BROKEN. THE MECHANIC NOTED SOME CORROSION, BUT REPAIRED WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. MARCH 2009, I HAD NEW FRONT TIRES PLACED AND BALANCED. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, I GOT A FLAT TIRE, HAD THE SPARE PUT ON AND BROUGHT IT BACK FOR REPLACEMENT. THE FRONT END SEEMED OUT OF ALIGNMENT, SO IT WAS BROUGHT BACK TO THE MECHANIC FOR REALIGNMENT. IT WAS THEN THEY SAW THAT THE ENTIRE SUBFRAME WAS CORRODED AND "DANGEROUS" TO DRIVE. THE CAR JUST STARTED SPILLING OUT FUEL AFTER HOURS OF BEING FILLED. WE TOOK THE CAR DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER (WHERE WE PURCHASED IN 2002) AND THEY SAID THAT WE HAD OVER FILLED THE GAS TANK WHICH CAUSED IT TO GO INTO THE CARBON BOX. THIS SEEMS TO BE THE SAME STATEMENT MANY OTHER DRIVERS WERE TOLD FROM DEALERS. $869 DOLLARS LATER, THEY REPLACED THE RECALLED FAULTY TANK CAP (WHICH TO ME WOULD HAVE CAUSED SOME OF THE FUEL TO SWOOSH AROUND WHILE DRIVING - IF NEVER PROPERLY FIT), AND THEN CHARGED US FOR NON-WARRANTY TO REPLACE THE FUEL LINE. AT WHICH TIME, OUR CAR HAS 30,800 MILES AND ORIGINAL OWNERS. UPON PICKING UP THE "FIXED" VEHICLE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED LIT. WE CALLED THE DEALER BACK IMMEDIATELY, BUT COULD NOT GET IN FOR A WEEK, WE DROVE THE CAR DURING THIS TIME. BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK (7/08) AND THEN WAS TOLD THAT THERE WERE THREE "ERROR" READINGS THAT WERE RELATED TO THE FUEL LINE. AFTER SPEAKING TO A COMBATIVE SERVICE TECH, I EXPLAINED THAT THEY DID SOMETHING AND THEY NEEDED TO FIX IT, AS THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS NOT ON PRIOR TO THEIR TECH "FIXING" OUR CAR. SUDDENLY, AFTER I EXPLAINED THAT IF IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY THEN THEY ARE NOT CHARGING ME AGAIN FOR SERVICES THAT SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN DONE THE FIRST TIME (UNDER WARRANTY IN MY OPINION). IT WAS AMAZING THAT THE CAR WAS READY TO GO WITH NO OTHER NEEDED SERVICE AND THE "ERROR" LIGHTS WERE NO LONGER DETECTED. HOWEVER, TWO DAYS LATER 7/31/08, OUR CAR WAS TO BE SERVICED AGAIN BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS STILL NOT GOING OFF. NOW, AFTER HAVING AN SMOG CHECK, OUR CAR DID NOT PASS INSPECTION DUE TO:FAILED - EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM DETECTED - GROSS LEAK. EMISSIONS SHOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY AND NOW THE DEALER - PLANET HYUNDAI, LAS VEGAS, IS REFUSING TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM THAT HAS OCCURRED WHILE THEIR TECH "FIXED" THE FUEL LINE PROBLEM. HEADLAMP BULBS BURN OUT EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS. I WAS USING AFTERMARKET BULBS WHICH HAVE NO WARRANTY. AFTER I WENT THROUGH 4 BULBS. I PURCHASED NEW BULBS FROM DEALER AND HAVE NOT HAD AN ISSUE WITH THEM FOR OVER A YEAR AND A HALF AND STILL WORKING FINE. DT: 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA, CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO A LOCAL GARAGE FOR AN INSPECTION, ON 6-20-05, AND MECHANIC ROTATED/ BALANCED TIRES, AND REPLACED TWO TIRES WITH NEW ONES. ALSO, REPLACED FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM/ REPLACED A GASKET/ FRONT WHEELS WERE ALIGNED/ STEERING WHEEL WAS CENTERED, AND THEY CHECKED CASTER AND CAMBER ANGLES. THEN MECHANIC TOLD CONSUMER THAT VEHICLE PASSED NY STATE INSPECTION. THE CONSUMER STARTED TRAVELING FROM NY TO VA ON 6-30, AND ON 7-2 VEHICLE STALLED, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, VEHICLE HAD COMPLETELY STOPPED ALTHOUGH ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING, OIL GAUGE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, IT WENT UP TO HIGHEST POINT. THIS WAS FIRST TIME VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHO RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE VEHICLE AND TOLD CONSUMER THAT HE SHOULD TAKE IT TO A DEALERSHIP BECAUSE OF THE WARRANTY. DEALERSHIP RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND THEN REPLACED RADIATOR AND RADIATOR PUMP. THEY TOLD CONSUMER THAT WAS REASON FOR VEHICLE OVERHEATING AND STALLING. THIS WAS AFTER CONSUMER WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP THAT VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. SO CONSUMER TRAVELED BACK HOME, ROADS WERE WET AND IT WAS LATE IN DA. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. AS SOON AS LIGHT CAME ON THE SPEED REDUCED BUT THE ENGINE ITSELF WAS STILL ON BUT, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO MOVE AT A SAFE SPEED AND STALLED. CONSUMER'S AND HIS FAMILY LIVES WERE IN DANGERED ALTHOUGH THERE WERE NO ACTUAL ACCIDENTS. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD CONSUMER THAT PROBLEM WAS WITH TRANSMISSION. THERE WAS A HOSE NOT CONNECTED PROPERLY WHICH CAUSED VEHICLE TO LEAK TRANSMISSION FLUID. *AK

THERE IS A TERRIBLE HOWLING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE RIM'S ON THE CAR ARE SO FLIMSY THAT I HAVE HAD TO RIMS BENT IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS. THEY CAN NOT HANDLE NON PAVED ROADS. TH FRONT SEAT BELT DOES NOT RETRACT PROPERLY CAUSING THE SEAL ON THE DOOR TO BE TORN WHEN THE DOOR IS SHUT. THE GAS MILEAGE IS TERRIBLE. SUPPOSED TO BE UPWARDS OF 35+ MPG ON THE HIGHWAY AND I ONLY GET APPROXIMATELY 24 - 26 MPG. THE INSURANCE ON THIS VEHICLE IS RIDICULOUS!! YOU THINK THAT I HAD AN AUDI. THE COST OF THE INSURANCE IS THE SAME. I HAVE BROUGHT UP MY CONCERNS WITH THE DEALER THAT I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM AND THEY DON'T SEEM TO THINK THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE HOWLING SINCE THEY COULDN'T GET IT TO DO IT WHILE THEY WERE DRIVING THE CAR. THE GAS MILEAGE THEY SAID WOULD IMPROVE WHEN THE ENGINE WAS BROKE IN AT ABOUT 20,000 MILES. WELL I AM PAST THE 20,000 AND THE MILEAGE HAS NOT IMPROVED. I AM NOT AT ALL HAPPY WITH THIS CAR. I WOULD GET RID OF IT IN A MINUTE IF I COULD GET OUT FROM UNDER THE PAYMENTS.
