2000 HYUNDAI SONATA, VIN: [XXX]MFG DATE: 06/18/1999 SUB-FRAME FAILURE. CONDITION FOUND BY TIRE RETAILER DURING INSTALLATION AND ALIGNMENT. LOWER CONTROL ARM SEPARATED FROM SUB-FRAME. FORTUNATELY, CONDITION FOUND BEFORE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING. LESS THAN 1 WEEK PRIOR TO DISCOVERY, EXPERIENCED DRIVE AXLE FAILURE. RIGHT DRIVE AXLE REPLACED BUT TECHNICIAN FAILED TO NOTICE OR MAKE ME AWARE FOR SEPARATION OF SUB-FRAME. THIS WAS THE APPARENT CAUSE OF THE DRIVE AXLE FAILURE. THE SUB-FRAME SEPARATION ALLOWED THE DRIVE AXLE TO SHIFT AND SLIP FROM TRANSMISSION CASE. LOWER CONNECTION FOR CONTROL ARM SEPARATED FROM SUB FRAME. THE CONDITION THAT OCCURRED IS IDENTICAL TO RECALL ON 2001-2004 HYUNDAI SONATA MODELS AND THE RECALL ISSUED FOR 1999 AND 2000 MODELS IN THE "SALT BELT" STATES. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED HEAVY WINTER WEATHER HERE IN VA OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS. LARGE AMOUNTS OF SALT HAVE BEEN USED ON OUR ROADS. THE RICHMOND AREA HAS EXCEEDED SALT USE SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE! BUT SALT ISN'T A REQUIREMENT FOR A CONDITION SUCH AS THIS. THE BUILD UP OF WATER ALONE WILL CREATE THIS CONDITION! RUST OCCURS ANY TIME THAT WATER WITH NO DRAINAGE COMBINES WITH STEEL/IRON. MY VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY IN DEALER SERVICE HAVING THE SUB-FRAME REPLACED! HAD I BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS POTENTIAL CONDITION, I WOULD HAVE TAKEN STEPS TO RESOLVE IT BEFORE IT THREATENED PERSONAL INJURY TO ME. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH AND THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM BROKE OFF THE SUB FRAME DUE TO CORROSION ON THE SUB FRAME, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A DEALER TO HAVE THE SUB FRAME REPAIRED UNDER THE SUSPENSION RECALL (09V124000). PREVIOUSLY THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO HAVE THE SUB FRAME INSPECTED, AT THE TIME THE MECHANIC DID NOT FIND ANY RUST OR CORROSION ON THE FRAME. THE CONTACT STATED THE MANUFACTURER NEVER INFORMED HER ABOUT THE SUSPENSION RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.

I AM WRITING IN REGARD TO MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA AND ITS SUB FRAME CORROSION AND THE FRUSTRATION I AM FEELING FROM THIS SITUATION. I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON FRIDAY AUGUST 27TH AROUND 520 A.M. AND HAD BEEN ON THE I-10 FREEWAY ABOUT 5 MILES GOING AROUND 65 MILES AN HOUR, THE ROAD SOON HAS A SPEED LIMIT OF 75 MPH ' IT'S A 25 MILE STRETCH OF DESERT AND VERY HEAVILY TRAVELED BY 18 WHEELERS MAKING THE HAUL TO CALIFORNIA (LOS ANGELES). ANYWAY, I HAD JUST PASSED A SEMI AND WAS ABOUT TO PASS ANOTHER (WITH ONE BEHIND ME) WHEN I FELT SOMETHING LIKE METAL ON PAVEMENT AND THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS TERRIBLY WRONG WITH MY FRONT RIGHT TIRE... I DID ALL I COULD TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY (ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE) THE SEMI BEHIND ME ALMOST REAR ENDED ME ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES ON THEIR WAY TO WORK ' ALL I HEARD WAS HORNS, TIRES SQUEALING, AND SAW PEOPLE FLIPPING ME OFF ALL WHILE I WAS TRYING TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY. I WAS SOMEHOW ABLE TO GET THE CAR OFF THE ROAD (BARELY OVER THE YELLOW LINE). I TRIED TO LOOK AT THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE BUT THE CAR WAS SO CLOSE TO THE FREEWAY I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN HIT. I DIDN'T KNOW WHETHER TO STAY IN THE CAR OR STAND OUTSIDE (IF THE CAR WOULD HAVE BEEN HIT EITHER WAY WOULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY). A POLICE MAN CAME BY ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER AND ASKED IF I WAS OKAY AND HAD ME TRY TO START THE CAR ' THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE AS IF THE GEARS WERE GONE ' HE USED HIS PATROL CAR TO MOVE THE CAR FROM THE ROADWAY AND DOWN INTO THE DESERT MEDIAN. IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT WE TOOK A LOOK AND COULD SEE THAT THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS FACING OUT APPROXIMATELY 45 DEGREES WITH WHEEL HOUSING AND FENDER DAMAGE. I CALLED A FRIEND, AND A TOW TRUCK AND WENT TO WORK. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC'S HOUSE AND I WAS TOLD AFTER HIS INSPECTION THAT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM COMPLETELY SEPARATED/DETACHED FROM THE SUB FRAME, WITH CHUNKS OF THE FRAME STILL ATTACHED TO THE CONTROL ARM HARDWARE (NOTICEABLE SEVERE RUST/CORROSION) WHEN THE LOWER CONTROL ARM DETACHED FROM THE SUB FRAME. *TR

FORTUNATELY, HE WAS ABLE TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS AN AIRBAG RECALL ON SOME MODEL CARS, I DRIVE A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS THAT HAS AN AIRBAG LIGHT ACTIVATED ON THE DASHBOARD. I DON'T KNOW IF THE AIRBAG IS DEFECTIVE, I SHOULD NOT DRIVE IT, OR WHAT TO DO, PLEASE ADVISE. I HAVE A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL SENSORS REPLACED IN THIS CAR ALREADY. IT IS SOMETHING ELECTRICAL OR ANOTHER SENSOR, GO FIGURE. MY WIPERS STOPPED WORKING, AND MY WIPER FLUID PUMP ALSO WENT OUT. HAD LOCAL AUTO SHOP REPLACE WIPER FLUID PUMP, THEY TRIED WHATEVER THEY COULD, THEN THE WIPERS WOULD NOT STOP WORKING,SO THEY TOOK OUT THE RELAY SWITCH.THEN MY WIPERS START WORKING AND I CAN TURN THEM OFF/ON WITH OUT THE RELAY SWITCH IN. MY CAR POWER LOCKS ARE NOT WORKING EITHER, WHICH THEY DID BEFORE. THEN MY CAR WOULD NOT START FOR NEXT THREE/FOUR DAYS, HAD TO HAVE IT JUMPED EACH DAY. SO I THOUGHT IT WAS MY BATTERY OR ALTERNATOR, HAD THOSE TESTED, IT IS NOT EITHER OF THEM. THEN MY CAR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAY STARTS A LITTLE BETTER, BUT STILL BARELY STARTING, AND SOMETIMES WHEN I START MY CAR, THE POWER LOCKS LOCK AUTOMATICALLY. I PULLED OUT INTO THE ROAD FROM A STOP SIGN AND MY CAR LOSS POWER AS THERE WAS ONCOMING TRAFFIC ALMOST COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. I HAD TO COME COMPLETELY OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND STOP, AS I RESUMED THE CAR BEGAN JERKING AND SLOWING RESUMING SPEED. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED WITH MY KIDS SITTING IN THE BACK SEAT. THE ALSO DID THE SAME THING AGAIN AS I BEGIN TO DRIVE UP A INCLINE/HILL, IT LOSS POWER. I EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM AT LEAST 3-4 TIMES A WEEK. I HAVE RESEARCHED THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM IN 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA, V-6 CARS AND CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THAT STATED THAT MY CAR WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I HAD SEVERAL REPAIRS DONE FROM PREVIOUS RECALLS. I INFORMED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PERSONNEL THAT I HAD NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATIONS IN THE MAIL REGARDING RECALLS. I AM VERY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AS WELL AS MY OWN. COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME IN RESOLVING THIS ISSUE? ENGINE STALLED AS I WAS TURNING IN AN INTERSECTION, I AVOIDED A CRASH. REPORTED TO DEALER AS IT HAPPENED 3 MORE TIMES. THEY REPLACED MY BATTERY AND GAVE ME A CARFAX REPORT AND DENIED ANY RECALLS, EVEN THOUGH I SHOWED THEM A PRINTOUT OF ONE ON THIS WEBSITE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON SEVERAL TIMES ,TAKEN TO AUTO STORE AND PUT ON DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE, MAF SENSOR DEFECTIVE AS STATED ON PRINTOUT X2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS .STILL STALLS AT LIGHTS, AND ALSO STALLS WHEN EITHER CHANGING TO REVERSE OR VISE VERSA. MY KIDS ARE SCARED TO RIDE WITH ME. THIS STALLING IS HAPPENING ON APPROX AN EVERY OTHER DAY BASIS.DEALER HAS BEEN MADE AWARE AND DENIES ANYTHING IS WRONG ACCORDING TO "THEIR" DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER, YET WILL NOT ALLOW ME VISUAL CONFIRMATION OF SUCH. WHILE SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A TURN ON SIDE ROAD, THE LOWER LEFT CONTROL ARM PULLED COMPLETELY OUT OF THE FRAME. INSPECTION AFTER FOUND LARGE HOLE RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH THE FRAME RAIL. INSPECTED RIGHT SIDE AND FRAME HAS SAME TYPE OF RUSTED AND MISSING FRAME SEGMENTS. THANKFULLY THIS HAPPENED AT LOW SPEED AND NOT ON THE INTERSTATE WHERE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN VERY BAD. I OWN A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING MY CAR AT ABOUT 20-30 MPH MY SUB-FRAME COLLAPSED WHICH CAUSED MY FRONT DRIVERS SIDE TIRE TO COME COMPLETELY OFF. WHEN THE SUBFRAME COLLAPSED IT FELL ON MY AXLE WHICH DAMAGED. WHILE THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE SUBFRAME MY AXLE WAS NOT COVERED EVEN THOUGHT THE SUBFRAME COLLAPSING IS A DIRECT RESULT OF MY TIRE AND AXLE DETACHING FROM MY CAR. AFTER VOICING MY CONCERN HYUNDAI STATED TO ME THAT THEY DO NOT COVER SUBSEQUENTLY DAMAGE AND THAT WAS NOTHING ELSE TO BE SAID OR DONE. THIS TO ME IS A BUNCH OF CRAP! IF THE SUBFRAME WAS NOT DEFECTIVE I WOULD OF NEVER ENDURED THESE PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR UNTIL NOW. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE ASSEMBLY WAS FALLING OFF THE VEHICLE DUE TO A RUSTED ENGINE CRADLE ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE STATION AND THEY REPLACED THE PASSENGER SIDE DRIVESHAFT ASSEMBLY. AFTER THE REPAIR WAS MADE, THE CONTACT STILL HEARD NOISES. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE SHOP AND, UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THE ENGINE CRADLE WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLY WAS FOUND TO BE OUT OF PLACE DUE TO RUST. THE ENTIRE WHEEL ROTATED WHILE THE DRIVER SIDE REMAINED STATIONARY. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE ENGINE CRADLE TO RUST. THERE IS A CURRENT INVESTIGATION (PE08029) FOR THIS FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 129,358.

THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR IS FAULTY. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW HYUNDAI CAN HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS ITEM IN THEIR KIA OPTIMAS AND SANTA FE 2.5L V-6 ENGINES, BUT NOT IN THE 2.5L V-6 SONATAS. THE LEAST OF THE PROBLEMS IS DIFFICULTY STARTING, WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE CULMINATION OF THE PROBLEM. THE BEGINNING OF THE PROBLEM IS THE LOSS OF POWER AND STALLING, INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING AT 60 MPH AND WITHOUT WARNING THE CAR LOSES POWER. LAST YEAR I SPENT OVER $500 FOR A TUNE UP AND SPARK PLUG WIRES. THE CHECK ENGINE JUST CAME ON TODAY AFTER HAVING TROUBLE GETTING STARTED AND HAD IT DIAGNOSED AS A P0335 CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR A CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION. I WAS TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN WITHOUT WARNING MY ENGINE SIMPLY SHUT OFF, AND THE POWER ASSIST TO THE BRAKES AND STEERING WAS STOPPED. I TRIED MOVING FROM THE CENTER LANE OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND WAS ALMOST REAR-ENDED BY A VEHICLE IN THE RIGHT LANE. I WAS ABLE TO PULL THE CAR OFF ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER AND STOP. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER IN THE AREA, PUGI HYUNDAI IN DOWNERS GROVE, IL. THEY TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE AND LATER IN THE MORNING INFORMED ME THAT THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR HAD FAILED. THE COST OF REPAIR WILL BE A MINIMUM OF $600, AND POSSIBLY MORE, DEPENDING IF THEY DETERMINE THE ENGINE NEEDS ADDITIONAL REPAIR PARTS. *NM

THEY SAID THERE WAS NO TRANSMISSION FLUID IN VEHICLE. NO FLUID ON GROUND. THEY SAID IT WAS A LINE THAT WAS BROKE OR HAD A HOLE IN IT. ABOUT A HOUR LATER I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT THE LINE BUT THE RADIATOR.ASKED IF THERE WAS ANY FLUID ON UNDERCARRIAGE COULD NOT ANSWER. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE YET TO VEHICLE. IT HAS BEEN IN THE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANY TIMES BUT I AM TOLD "NOTHING IS WRONG WITH IT" THERE WAS A LOUD CLANK WHEN SHIFTING GEARS EVEN WHEN PARKED. ONE OF THE MAIN REP FROM HYUNDAI CAME AND CHECKED IT OUT AND SAID IT WAS FINE. HE ALSO DROVE THE CAR, BUT THE WAY HE DROVE IT WAS LIKE AT BEING AT AN INDY 500. I ASKED HIM TO COMPARE MY CAR WITH ANY OTHER CAR ON THE LOT TO SEE IF THE NOISE WAS NORMAL, HE REFUSED. I TOOK THE CAR TO ANOTHER HYUNDAI DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE 3 BOLTS HAD BACKED OUT OF THE HOUSING THUS CAUSING THE CLANKING NOISE. IT STILL FLUTTERS. ALSO, DURING ACCELLERATION, THE CAR INTERMITTENTLY "LURCHES" OR "JERKS" AS IF IT'S GOING TO STALL. SEPTEMER 1 2003, WHILE TRAVELING ABOUT 35MPH IT STALLED AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE POWER STEERING WON'T WORK WHEN IT STALLS. ON 8/29/03 THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TAKEN TO THE FIRST TEAM AUTO MALL DEALERSHIP FOR STALLING 8-10 TIMES THE PREVIOUS WEEK. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLAIMED THAT THEIR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT DID NOT DETECT ANY "CODES" AND THE CAR NEVER STALLED DURING TEST DRIVES. I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD PICK THE CAR UP. I DID SO 8/29/03 AND DROVE IT WITHOUT INCIDENT UNTIL 9/ 1, WHEN IT STALLED AGAIN. I KNOW FROM RESEARCHING NHTSA THAT A RECALL WAS DONE ON 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA'S WITH 6 CYLINDER ENGINES FOR THIS. (COMPLAINT # 880356, RECALL # 00V259001). MY 4 CYLINDER SONATA IS DOING THE SAME THING. 8/29, I SPOKE WITH GARY BABER, THE DEALERSHIP MANAGER, CHRIS CLOWSER, THE SERVICE DEPT MANAGER AND ERIC ADAMS, ADVISOR. THEY ALL SOUNDED LIKE A BROKEN RECORD: "IF THE CAR DOESN'T DO ANYTHING WHILE WE HAVE IT, THEN THERE'S NO WAY WE CAN DO ANYTHING TO FIX IT; OUR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT DID NOT PICK UP ANY CODES". I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF THE CAR STARTS FINE TOMORROW AND I GET A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP SAYING THE CAR IS FINE AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. THE BACK WINDOW WAS LEFT DOWN WHEN WE PARKED. MY SON, 6 YEARS OLD, WENT TO PUT IT UP. SOMEHOW HE STUCK HIS HEAD IN THROUGH THE OPENING AND ACCIDENTALLY CONTINUED TO PUT UP THE ELECTRIC WINDOW. THE WINDOW CAUGHT HIM IN THE MOUTH, WITH HIS HEAD ON ONE SIDE OF THE WINDOW AND HIS CHIN ON THE OTHER. HE WAS STUCK. I TURNED OFF THE KEY. I THEN TURNED THE KEY BACK ON AND PUSHED THE BUTTON TO LOWER THE WINDOW. I'M NOT SURE IF HE WAS PUSHING THE WRONG BUTTON, BUT IT WENT UP MORE. WE THEN MANAGED TO LOWER THE WINDOW. HE WAS BLEEDING ON THE SIDES OF HIS MOUTH. NOTHING STOPPED THE WINDOW FROM GOING UP EVEN WITH HIS HEAD IN THERE. WE WERE LUCKY NOTHING MORE SERIOUS HAPPENED. WE PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. PRIOR TO PURCHASE WE NOTICED THAT MY SON, WHO WEIGHS 350 LBS. COULD NOT GET EITHER OF THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT BELTS TO LATCH AND THE ONLY WAY THE FRONT SEAT BELT WOULD LATCH IS IF THE SEAT WAS TILTED BACK AND SLIDE ALL THE WAY BACK, EVEN AT THAT THE SEAT /SHOULDER HARNESS WOULD PRESS DEEPLY INTO HIS BODY MAKING IT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. WE ASKED IF FACTORY SEAT BELT EXTENSIONS WERE AVAILABLE. THEY STATED THAT THE PARTS DEPARTMENT HAD THEM BUT THEY WERE CLOSED (WE BOUGHT THE CAR ON A SATURADY AFTERNOON). THEY SAID WE COULD PICK THEM UP ON MONDAY. WE CONTACTED THE DEALER ON MONDAY AND WERE TOLD THAT THE PARTS DEPARTMENT DIDN'T HAVE THEM AND WOULD HAVE TO GET THEM FROM HYUNDAI. WE AGAIN CONTACTED THE DEALER ON TUESDAY AND THEY SAID THAT HYUNDAI NO LONGER PROVIDED SEAT BELT EXTENSIONS BECAUSE OF NUMEREOUS LIABILITIES SUITS THAT HAVE BEEN FILE DUE TO THEIR FAILURE. THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD RESEARCH OTHER AVENUES. ON 5/17/00 WE WERE INFORMED THAT THE DEALER WOULD HAVE A TRIM SHOP TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM AND WE NEEDED TO CALL THEM TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT. IN DISCUSSIONS WITH MY WIFE, THE TRIM SHOP STATED THAT THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY WERE NOT SURE THAT THEY COULD MATCH THE COLOR. IT TURNS OUT THAT THEY WERE PLANNED TO SPLICE A PIECE OF SEAT BELT MATERIAL INTO THE EXSITING SEAT BELT. I EXPLAINED TO THE DEALER THAT I DID NOT BELIEVE THAT, WHAT WAS PRESENTED AS "A FIX" WAS NEITHER SAFE OR ACCEPTABLE. ON 5/18/00 THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY HAVE "RESEARCHED ALL KNOWN SOURCES" AND THEIR WAS NOTHING FURTURE THAT THEY COULD (WOULD) DO. THE DEALER IS WILL TO GIVE US OUR TRADE BACK AND CANCEL THE DEAL, BUT AS I EXPLAINED TO THE DEALER, I BELIEVE THAT HYUNDAI HAS A LEGAL RESPONSIBLITY TO PROVIDE FUNTIONING SEAT BELTS FOR ALL OCCUPANTS OR THEY SHOULD NOT BE PERMITTED TO MAKET AND SELL CARS IN THE U.S.A.. THE FUEL TANK ON 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA IS CRACKED AND LEAKING GASOLINE. THERE IS A STRONG GAS ODOR IN THE CABIN. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND HAZMAT TEAM RESPONDED. WHEN I TRY TO FILL THE VEHICLE WITH GAS IT STOPS EVERY FEW CENTS, SIMULAR TO WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FULL, EVEN WHEN IT IS ON EMPTY. IT TAKES UPWARDS OF 30-45 MINUTES TO FILL THE GAS TANK. SOMETIMES THE GAS GAUGE IS ON LOW WHEN I TRY TO FILL IT UP BUT IT STOPS FILLING SO OFTEN THAT I HAVE TO CHANGE PUMPS TO BE ABLE TO FILL MY TANK TO FULL. I HAVE ALSO HAD THE GAS SPILL OUT THE TOP OF THE TANK JUST BY TRYING TO PUT ENOUGH GAS IN MY VEHICLE TO MAKE IT HOME. I HAVE DONE QUITE A BIT OF RESEARCH ON THE ISSUE AND HAVE FOUND IT TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG HYUNDAI VEHICLE. WE BOUGHT THIS CAR TO HAVE A GOOD, RELIABLE VEHICLE FOR OUR DAUGHTER TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. RECALL NUMBER 00V259001, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, WIRING WAS RELATED TO THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED. RECENTLY, THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION WITHOUT WARNING. I HAVE MADE FIVE TRIPS TO THE DEALER WITH THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA WHICH WAS PURCHASED FROM ALLEN TURNER HYUNDAI IN PENSACOLA, FL AND IS SERVICED BY THEM DUE TO IT IS STILL IN WARRANTY. MY CAR MAKES A LOUD CLONKING SOUND AND THEN STOPS AND ALL POWER GOES OFF. THIS HAPPENS NORMALLY WHEN I GO OVER 30-40 MPH AND HAS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING 70 ON THE INTERSTATE AND ALMOST CAUSED ME TO WRECK ON A BRIDGE BECAUSE I HAD NO SHOULDER TO GO OFF ON AND CARS ALMOST SLAMMED INTO THE BACK OF ME. AFTER IT SHUTS DOWN, IT TAKES ANYWHERE FROM 10 MINUTES TO ONE HOUR TO START AGAIN. IT TURNS OVER BUT WILL NOT START AFTER THIS HAPPENS. AS SAID I HAVE TAKEN THIS 5 TIMES TO THE DEALER, THIS LAST TIME THEY KEPT IT 5 DAYS AND FOUND NOTHING. I HAD THEM DRIVE IT HOME. I HAD A NEW BATTERY PUT IN. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE AIR FILTER HAD JUMPED OFF THE TRACK AND JUST NEEDED PUT BACK ON. THE LAST 2 TIMES THEY SAID THE COMPUTER READ NOTHING. I ASKED THEM ABOUT THE GAS LINE OR WATER IN THE GAS AND THEY SAID THEY CHECK ALL THIS, CHECKED CRANK SENSOR, CHANGED MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, "BAD CONNECTION", TIGHTENED CABLE ENDS PER TECH LINE. THE LAST TIME THE INVOICE JUST TELLS ME THE COMPUTER READS OK. I HAD THEM DRIVE IT FOR 5 DAYS FOR 218 MILES BUT IT DID NOT REPRODUCE PER TECH. I AM GOING TO GET KILLED IN THIS CAR AND THEY HONESTLY JUST DON'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. THE DISTRICT MANGER, JEFF WESTLAND OUT OF N.J., (609) 395-7308 STATED THAT HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF A DEFECT IN THE RIGHT PASSENGER SEAT (LATE 1999'S & EARLY 2000'S THAT ROLLED OFF THE ASSEMBLY) WHICH MAKES THE LIGHT COME ON IF A PERSON MOVES AROUND IN THE SEAT, EXCESSIVE WEIGHT OF A PASSENGER, OR PUTTING ANY OBJECT UNDER THE SEAT. I AM THE OWNER OF A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS V6 AND ON NOVEMBER 1, 2008 I WAS TRAVELING HOME WITH MY COUSIN WHEN WHILE NEGOTIATING A LEFT TURN MY STEERING BECAME VERY DIFFICULT AND I HEARD A VERY LOUD SCREECHING SOUND COMING FROM MY CAR. I NARROWLY ESCAPED AN ACCIDENT AS MY CAR BEGAN DANGEROUSLY CAREENING TOWARDS A DITCH ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD I WAS TURNING ONTO. I WAS APPROACHING A RED LIGHT AND WHEN I PRESSED MY BRAKES MY DRIVING AXLE SEPARATED FROM MY FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE. AFTER THAT HAPPENED A MECHANIC LIFTED MY CAR UP AND WE SAW THAT THE FRAME WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY COVERED WITH RUST. I CALLED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER FOR THE COMPANY THAT MAKES THE VEHICLE WHERE I WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE FRAME IS UNDER RECALL AND IS TO BE REPLACED. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE CAR DEALERSHIP, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMED ME THAT THE BOLTS HAD SEIZED TO THE FRAME BECAUSE OF THE RUST AND THE ONLY WAY TO REPLACE THE FRAME WOULD BE TO CUT THE BOLTS OFF. BY DOING SO OTHER PARTS WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED RESULTING IN FEES COMING TO A TOTAL OF $3500, WHICH IS MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE CAR. I WAS DRIVING HOME GETTING READY TO GET ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN MY CAR MADE A LOUD NOISE, AND IT SEEMED THE FRONT END HAD DROPPED. HAD CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ADVISED ME THAT THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE AXEL HAD RUSTED OUT. I HAD PURCHASED A SERVICE CONTRACT THROUGH ORIGINAL DEALERSHIP. SERVICE CONTRACT SAID THAT HYUNDAI WAS GOING TO REPAIR MY DAMAGES FREE OF CHARGE; IN OTHER WORDS, I DID NOT HAVE TO GO THROUGH MY SERVICE CONTRACT TO HAVE REPAIRS DONE AND I DID NOT HAVE TO PAY THE $50 DEDUCTIBLE. HOWEVER, UPON RETURNING TO PICK UP MY CAR I WAS INFORMED BY DEALERSHIP THAT I DID IN FACT HAVE TO PAY THE DEDUCTIBLE. DEALERSHIP ADVISED THAT HYUNDAI ONLY PAID FOR A PORTION OF THE PROBLEM. I CURRENTLY OWN A YEAR 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA V6 GLS. ON THE MORNING OF JULY 17TH, 2008 AT APPROX. 3:45 AM I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON A NEWSPAPER ROUTE FOR A LOCAL DISTRIBUTION COMPANY. I WAS MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN OFF A MAIN STREET ONTO A SIDE STREET AS I MY STEERING WHEEL JEARKED TO THE RIGHT VERY QUICKLY, AND MY CAR OUT OF THE BLUE WENT OUT OF ALLIGNMENT, TO A DEGREE THAT IT WOULD APPEAR THAT I MUST HAVE CRASHED INTO SOMETHING. REPAIR SHOP TOLD US THEY HAD REPAIRED SEVERAL HYUNDAI SONATAS OVER THE LAST YEAR WITH RUST ALL IN THE SAME SPOT ON THE FRAME AND THAT SOME COULDN'T EVEN MAKE IT TO THE SHOP WITHOUT A TOW. A PERIOD OF LESS THAT 8 MONTHS HAS PASSED SINCE HAVING THE BEARING REPLACED THE FIRST TIME. NOW, SINCE ITS BEEN MORE THAN 12K MILES SINCE THE REPLACEMENT - I AM STUCK WITH THE REPAIR BILL! Rt passenger side wheel clunks when turning, loud noise when moving took to dealer they found nothing wrong. I returned to dealer again a couple weeks later to confirm my a arm needs repairs, safety issues airbag’s light remaining lit told repairs not available for year and make iwas told to deal with it by dealer even if it was a safety issue, driving car doesn’t matter what speed my back end sounds like it is falling apart and my car will slam out or into gear I have reviewed recalls and safety issues and I have been told that they have been closed even if my car is currently having issues with the vehicle recalls ie..slamming in and out of gear, arm issues and clunky noises on turns and driving,rear end clunk sounds like no shocks or struts

WHILE DRIVING MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA ON GOOD ROAD AND APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT IN THE LEFT THROUGH-LANE OF A MULTILANE STREET, I MADE A QUICK STOP (NOT AND EMERGENCY STOP) WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED YELLOW. THE ROAD WAS IN GOOD CONDITION AND DRY, AND THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT ABOUT 80 DEGREES F. UPON MAKING THIS STOP THE CAR PULLED UNUSUALLY SHARPLY TO THE RIGHT - IF THERE HAD BEEN A CAR IN THE RIGHT LANE, I WOULD HAVE HIT IT. AFTER THIS STOP, THE FRONT TIRE(S) MADE UNUSUAL SQUEELING NOISES UPON TURNING, AND THE STEERING FELT UNUSUAL AND SHAKEY. I DROVE THE CAR DIRECTLY (ABOUT A MILE) TO THE PLACE WE WERE VISITING IN LAS VEGAS AND THE NEXT MORNING TOOK THE CAR DIRECTLY TO A HYUNDAI DEALER. UPON INSPECTION THE DEALER FOUND THAT THE FRONT SUSPENSION FRAME CROSSMEMBER (FRONT SUBFRAME) HAD A CORROSION HOLE THROUGH THE FRONT SUBBFRAME AND THE FRONT SUBFRAME HAD FAILED, CAUSING THE RIGHT FRONT (PASSENGER) TIRE TO MOVE OUT OF POSITION AND SITTING AT AN ANGLE. THE DEALER'S ADVICE WAS THAT THIS WAS A SAFETY PROBLEM, AND IT COULD FURTHER FAIL AND RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. THEY ADVISED THAT I DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL THIS THIS FRONT SUBFRAME WAS REPLACED. THIS IS A REPLACEABLE PIECE - WHICH WAS ORDERED, AND REPLACEMENT PLANNED. THE CAR WAS LEFT WITH THE HYUNDAI DEALER, AND NOT DRIVEN FURTHER. THIS SITUATION IS ESSENTIALLY IDENTICAL TO NHTSA REFERENCE NUMBER 13V354000 FOR THE REAL SUSPENSION FOR SOME HYUNDAI VEHICLES THAT LED TO HYUNDAI RECALL CAMPAIGN 113 APPROVED IN SEPT 2013. HYUNDAI RECORDS SHOW THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED IN ILLINOIS (ONE OF THE APPROVED 113-RECALL STATES) AND IT WAS DRIVEN THERE FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS OR SO. I AM THE SECOND OWNER. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV EXCESSIVELY HIGH AND THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY. WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE HESITATED AND VIBRATED. IN ADDITION, THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTED VIOLENTLY INTO GEAR. THERE WAS NO POWER RESPONSE DURING ACCELERATION, WHICH RESULTED IN THE ENGINE STALLING INTERMITTENTLY. THE WARNING INDICATOR ALSO ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURES. THE MASS DAMPER WAS REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON SIX SEPARATE OCCASIONS FOR IDENTICAL FAILURES. THE REPAIRS CONSISTED OF A COMPLETE TUNE UP, REPLACEMENT OF THE "OUTPUT" SPEED SENSOR, AND THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED TWICE; HOWEVER, THE FAILURES CONTINUED. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE EXPIRED AT 60,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,559 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 82,505.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 44-55 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN PULLING TO THE LEFT WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY STEERING THE VEHICLE AND HAD TO EXERT GREAT EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE STEERED ONLY IN ONE DIRECTION WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT THE STEERING BEFORE IT RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT HEARD A METAL NOISE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE FRONT SUBFRAME DETACHED FROM THE BODY DUE TO RUST CORROSION. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V124000 (SUSPENSION) WAS REFERENCED. THE VEHICLE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS DISPLEASED TO KNOW THAT A WHEEL ALIGNMENT WAS REQUIRED IN CONJUNCTION TO THE RECALL REPAIR. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WOULD NOT ASSUME FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE. I HAVE A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHEN THE CAR WAS FIRST PURCHASED IN FEBRUARY OF 2006 THE CAR HAD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WHERE THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 25 MPH. I HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED. THEN LATER IN THAT YEAR WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 65 MPH I NOTICED THE CAR WOULD SWAY DRAMATICALLY WHEN YOU TURNED THE WILL RIGHT. TAKING THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER THEY CLAIMED TO BE JUST THAT THE CAR NEEDED AN ALIMENT. NOW IN 2008 I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE RIGHT AXLE OF THE CAR REPLACED BECAUSE WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP LIGHT THE RIGHT WHEEL FELL FROM THE CAR AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. TAKING IT TO A TIRE SHOP TO HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE WHOLE FRONT UNDERSIDE OF THE FRAME WAS DRASTICALLY RUSTED AND THAT DRIVING THE CAR IN THE STATE WOULD LEAD TO A WRECK OR WORSE. ON AUGUST 25TH, 2007, MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING HOME ON THE SOUTHERN STATE PARKWAY. THERE WAS QUITE SOME TRAFFIC (STOP-AND-GO KIND OF THING) SO WE WEREN'T AT A HIGH SPEED. WHEN THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME HAD TO STOP SHORT, I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES, AND THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL OF MY CAR SUNK, AND THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE LIKE METAL SCRATCHING AGAINST THE PAVEMENT . AFTER I FINALLY MANAGED TO STOP THE CAR WITHOUT GETTING HIT BY ANOTHER DRIVER, AND CHECKING TO SEE IF MY WIFE WAS OK, I GOT OUT OF THE CAR JUST TO FIND OUT THAT MY FRONT RIGHT WHEEL WAS IN AN ALMOST HORIZONTAL POSITION. AFTER TOWING THE CAR TO THE REPAIR SHOP, MY MECHANIC FOUND OUT THAT THE AXLE AND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE BECAUSE THE ENGINE CRADLE WAS SEVERELY RUSTED, AND THEREFORE THERE WAS NO SUPPORT FOR THE AXLE AND THE CONTROL ARM TO SUSTAIN THE WEIGHT AND PRESSURE OF THE SUDDEN STOP. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I BELIEVE THAT MY WIFE AND I ARE VERY LUCKY TO NOT HAVE BEEN INJURED, OR TO CAUSE SOMEBODY ELSE AN INJURY. THE REPAIRS WERE COSTLY, BUT I HAD TO DO IT. I NEED THE CAR TO WORK, AND WE LIVE IN A PLACE WERE THE CAR IS AN EVERYDAY NECESSITY. THE CRADLE FOR THIS VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED AND COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED COMPLETELY AT A COST OF $2,897.22. WE ALSO INCURRED THE FOLLOWING EXPENSES DUE TO THE CRADLE FAILING WHILE WE WERE DRIVING THE CAR ON THE SOUTHERN STATE PARKWAY ON AUGUST 25TH, 2007: TOWING CHARGE OF $168.37, CAR RENTAL CHARGES OF $164.53. A WRITTEN ESTIMATE FROM A LOCAL BODY SHOP FOR $996.59 SHOULD BE ADDED TO COVER THE BODY DAMAGE SUSTAINED WHEN THE RIGHT SIDE AXLE AND RIGHT SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM CRACKED, CAUSING THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE WHEEL TO BEND THE RIGHT SIDE BUMPER COVER. MY MECHANIC KEPT THE OLD CRADLE UP TO A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, WHEN AFTER DEALING WITH THE LOCAL DMV OFFICE AND EXPLAINING THE SITUATION THEY INFORMED US THAT "A DMV JUDGE WOULDN'T EVEN LOOK AT THIS CASE". I HAD MY BEARINGS REPLACED, MY REAR HUB BEARINGS. NOW IT IS MAKING TO SAME NOISE AND THEY NOW SAY IT IS NOT THE BEARINGS-THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS! MY CAR IDLE SOUNDS LIKE IS GOING TO STALL ALL THE TIME WHEN I AM STOPPED. THE CAR PULLS AROUND 5,20 AND 50 MPH LIKE IT JUST CANNOT GET GAS OR THE TRANSMISSION IS BAD. I BROUGHT IT IN 2XS. THEY SAY THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS AND CANNOT GET ANYTHING ON THE DIAG MACHINES. NOW I AM PASSED 60,000 MILES. AFTER HAVING MY CAR FOR 2 DAYS (GIVING ME NO LENDER OR RENTAL) THEY FOUND A PROBLEM AT THE LAST MINUTE. OIL LEAKED FROM THE VALVES INTO THE SPARK PLUG WIRES INTO THE COIL PACK AND THAT IS THE CAR PULLING PROBLEM. THEY SAY I HAVE TO PAY $600 TO FIX IT. THIS WAS ON JUNE 6,2003. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR THE IDLE WHICH WAS NOT FIXED AND BROUGHT IT IN FOR THIS ENGINE HESITATION 2XS. BOTH TIMES THEY DID NOT AND COULDNOT FIX THESE PROBLEMS. I HAVE THE RECEIPTS THAT THEY COULD NOT FIX NOR REPEAT THESE PROBLEMS, BUT THEY ARE NOTED. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THESE REPAIRS!!!! THIS IS NOT DAILY UPKEEP!! THIS MUST BE DEFECT!! I HAVE A REAL PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR! I NEED TO BE CONTACTED ON THIS MATTER FOR HYUNDAI TO PAY FOR THESE REPAIRS! I AM HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME ON THIS MATTER. THESE PARTS NEED TO BE REPLACED NOW AND I CANNOT AND SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR THESE PARTS OR LABOR! I ALSO HAVE HAD MY FRONT DRIVER WINDOW REGULATOR FIXED 4 TIMES, MY FRONT PASSENGER SIDE REGULATOR FIXED ONCE, MY REAR REGULATOR FIXED ONCE. I HAD TO BUY A NEW BATTERY FOR MY CAR AND A NEW HEADLIGHT IN THE FIRST YEAR(HYUNDAI SAID I HAD TO SUBMIT PAPERWORK TO SEE IF THEY WOULD VOTE TO REPAY ME FOR MY COST OF THE BATTERY). I HAD MY AIR BAG LIGHT GOING OFF(WHICH NOW I NEVER TRUST FOR IT TO GO OFF WHEN NEEDED OR EVEN GO OFF WHEN NOT ). MY PAINT IS CHIPPING EVERYWHERE! BRAKE ROTORS ARE WARPPED AND CAUSING A LOW BRAKE PEDEL AND A DANGEROUS SHIMMY IN THE WHEEL WHEN EVER I TRY TO STOP. THEY RESURFACED BOTH FRONT ROTORS ON 4/11/01 WITH 12,400 MILES. AT 29,000 MILES THE PROBLEM CAME BACK AND THEY REFUSED TO FIX THE PROBLEM.FIRST THEY STATED IT WAS CAUSED BY MY DRIVING, THEN I WAS TOLD IT WAS CAUSED BY GOING THRU PUDDLES. THEN I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY HEAT AND THEY DO NOT COVER HEAT RELATED PROBLEMS. THE ROTORS ARE COVERED FOR 5 YEARS, 60,000 MILES, BUT NOT FOR THE ABOVE REASONS.
