Brake Calipers are getting stuck often damaging the rotors and pads. This happens even for new calipers and rotors that won't last more than one year after replacement. The parts were original from manufacturer. The rear and front brakes were randomly getting stuck on one wheel after a period of using brakes. This put the vehicle in danger of getting fire from overheating rotors or increasing the risk of a crash because of an unusable brake system. This incident has repeated over time from 2017 till 2025 inducing big spendings for fixing brakes

The problem as reported by so many others that the rear brake system has an inherent failure in the caliper/rotor/brake pads. I have vested nearly $2500.00 on the three for mentioned parts and labor over last 4 years. Between Midas and now a private mechanic have tried better lube on slide pins but the problem still persists. A little research states that the caliper piston doesn't retract from the rotors and in turn heating up the brake components to the point of failure. Some Law firms have stated the problem is a production flaw my problem with a system with this failure rate isn't recognized by the Hyundia. Calipers should simply last 80 to a 100 thousand miles under most driving conditions. Looking forward to your response. Kerry yakel

THE REAR BRAKES ON THE SONATA ARE NOT RELEASING FULLY CAUSING EXCESS WEAR, BRAKE NOISE AND PREMATURE REPLACEMENT. I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH APPX 20K MILES ON IT SO I DON'T KNOW IF THE REAR BRAKES WERE REPLACED BEFORE PURCHASE. FOR ME THE FIRST REPLACEMENT CAME AT 31,514 MILES, THE SECOND ABOUT 18,000 MILES AFTER THAT (49,465) AND ONCE AGAIN ABOUT 1500 MILES LATER AT 50,973. The sunroof detached from the vehicle at highway speed. The sunroof was not open or otherwise in operation when it detached. A mechanic concluded that the adhesive holding the glass to the sun roof assembly failed. The sunroof assembly was completely intact after the incident and did not appear to be damaged.

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while attempting to open the front driver’s side door, the outside door handle detached from the vehicle. The contact also stated that all four door handles had detached from the vehicle. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.

AS I TRIED TO OPEN MY PASSENGER FRONT SIDE DOOR THIS MORNING I PULLED THE HANDLE OFF. THE PORTION OF THE HANDLE THAT CONNECTS INTO THE LATCH MECHANISM HAD SNAPPED OFF IN THE DOOR. I WOULD JUST TAKE IT IN AND GET IT FIXED, BUT THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I HAVE HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM, HAVING LOST THE PASSENGER REAR HANDLE EARLIER THIS SUMMER AND THE DRIVER'S FRONT ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO. I CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THERE MUST BE A DISTINCT DEFECT WITH THE CONSTRUCTION ON THE DOORS OF THIS MODEL, AND SEARCHING AROUND THE INTERNET I'VE FOUND A HANDFUL OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR SONATAS.

Excessively cracked dashboard. The entire dash in my 2009 Hyundai Sonata is cracked and a replacement has been denied by Hyundai USA. A cracked dashboard could cause reduced structural integrity. The dashboard is a structural component designed to help absorb and distribute some of the forces in a collision. Cracks can compromise this ability to perform this function potentially increasing the force experienced by the occupants and the and other parts of the vehicle. It can also cause increased risk of debris and shrapnel. During a collision the cracked dashboard may break apart more easily causing sharp or jagged pieces to become projectiles inside of the cabin these fragments can pose a serious injury risk to occupants. It can also result in an impaired airbag deployment. Many vehicles have airbags in the dashboard a severely cracked dashboard could obstruct or improperly deploy airbags for example the air bag may not fully deploy reducing its effectiveness and the dashboard may puncture or otherwise interfere with the airbag as it inflates creating additional safety hazards. Cracks may expose sharp edges or materials under the dashboard which could harm occupants during a collision, especially in areas where passengers may come into contact with the dashboard. A cracked dashboard could also cause a compromised electrical system dashboards house numerous electrical systems, sensors and controls cracks could indicate underlying damage to these components. In a collision these systems may fail or behave unpredictably which could further reduce safety features. Cracked dashboards present a significant risk during a collision and should be addressed by the manufacturer promptly to ensure its customer safety.

My door handles are breaking off. I was climbing in and out from my passenger seat..now my passenger and rear passenger door handles have broken off in the same day. I have no way in my vehicle now except through the window that I had to take off track to slide down to crawl in and out..im in a loss for words. This is humiliating.

None of my lights on my dash has changed. Areas affected: Service Brakes, Hydraulics, and exterior lighting, Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to engaged the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. As mentioned in the recall from 4/1/13. 2nd recall For Suspension: control arm separation May suddenly changed the rear wheel alignment affecting the handling of the car increasing the risk of a crash. Another main common issue is The rusted out subframe, lower control arms, cam bolts, bushings, control arm, subframe, and sway bar. This is causing me to drive unstable and hold the steering wheel forcefully in order to remain straight.

I WAS ALSO INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC THAT MY SUBFRAME HAS HOLES AND ADDED THAT IT CALLS FOR CONCERN AS A SAFETY ISSUE. PLEASE, I DO NOT HAVE THE $800 HE SAID IT WOULD COST. I SEE THAT SOMEOTHER PERSONS HAD COMPLAINED IN THE PAST AND MADE A CLEAR STRONG STANDING TO HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS THAT IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND HAD THEIR VEHICLES REPAIRED AT NO COST TO THE OWNERS. THE ESC LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR JERKS AS THIS HAPPENS. ONCE IN THIS CONDITION, THE CAR RUNS EXTREMELY ROUGH AND WILL EVEN STALL WHEN STARTING FROM A FULL STOP (STALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION). The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving 60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. After calling AAA, the technician determined the vehicle had run out of gasoline however, the instrument panel was reading a half tank. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the instrument panel. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 184,500.

YOU CAN FEEL A SUDDEN IMPACT AND IT IS MORE NOTICEABLE DURING WINTER. MANY TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP WENT TO NO WHERE AS THE DEALER SIMPLY IGNORED THE PROBLEM AND MENTIONED THAT THEY DID NOT NOTICE ANY ISSUE. The contact owned a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at 45 MPH, the vehicle was turning the corner. It was unknown if any warning lights were illuminated. As a result, the vehicle was T-boned by a vehicle that was turning the corner, then crashed and the vehicle came to a stop at an unknown location. Most of the impact was received from the front passenger side. The other divers speed was unknown. None of the air bags deployed. The contact suffered injuries to the head and the lungs when she impacted the steering wheel. The contact was taken to the hospital by an ambulance. The contact's daughter was in a coma and had brain trauma and a punctured lung. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The other vehicle owner was injured as well, the extent of his injuries was unknown. There was no property damage. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

WE BELIEVE OUR VEHICLE HAS A TAKATA AIR BAG SYSTEM. IT IS A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA THAT WAS BUILT IN 2008. IN NOVEMBER 2018, CRACKS STARTED TO APPEAR ON THE DASHBOARD ABOVE THE AIR BAGS. IT HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE SINCE. THE AIR BAG LIGHT HAS COME ON AND IS CONSISTENTLY STAYING ON WHILE DRIVING THE CAR. THE BOOK SAYS TO CONTACT THE DEALER. ALL INDICATIONS FROM INFORMATION ONLINE STATE THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND MUST BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY. WE FEEL CONCERNED ABOUT DRIVING IT. IT WAS PURCHASED NEW ON 09/10/2008. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN LISTED IN THE RECALLS FOR THE HYUNDAI SONATAS YEARS 2007-2008 SINCE IT WAS BUILT IN 2008.

HYUNDAI DEALERS REFUSE TO CLASSIFY IT A SAFETY DEFECT, AND HAVE TOLD ME THE DASHBOARD REPLACEMENT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CUSTOMER. MULTIPLE HYUNDAI SERVICE TECHNICIANS ON THE INTERNET CONFIRM WHAT I SUSPECT, THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT AND A SAFETY ISSUE. The contact became aware that the driver’s side front ball joint had detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an autobody shop to be repaired but the contact thought that there was a recall for the lower control arm ball joint that might have caused the failure. I HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE FOR ALIGNMENT. THEY SAID BOLTS RELATED TO REAR TIE RODS WERE RUSTED AND THEY COULD NOT DO IT. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION AND POSSIBLE REPAIR. HE SAID THE SAME. IN ADDITION HE ALSO SAID THAT THE STRUTS ARE LEAKING. I LOOKED INTO THE HISTORY OF MY VEHICLE, AS I BOUGHT IT USED 2 YEARS AGO. I FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN RECALLED IN 2013 FOR SUSPENSION RELATED ISSUES. AND SOME 239000 VEHICLES WERE AFFECTED. I BELIEVE ITS THE SAME ISSUE WHICH HAS RESURFACED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE IS PERFECTLY FINE OTHERWISE. BY THE WAY I HAVE A SALVAGE TITLE OF THE VEHICLE ON MY NAME IF THAT IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

VEHICLE SWAYS OUT OF CONTROL WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP OR MAKE A TURN. TOOK IT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THEY DID AN INSPECTION AND DROVE IT AND SAID THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG. I ASKED THEM TO DRIVE IT AGAIN WITH ME IN IT AND THEN THEY INSPECTED IT AGAIN AND SAID THAT HE REAR SUB FRAME IS RUSTED OUT. THE CAR HAS NO OUTWARD SIGNS OF RUST, BUT APPARENTLY THE SUBFRAMES ON HYUNDAIS ARE KNOWN FOR THIS.

PROBLEM WAS RECENTLY IDENTIFIED AFTER MULTIPLE TRIPS TO THE SHOP TO DETERMINE ISSUE WITH THE CAR. CAR HAS ISSUE WITH CONTROL, BRAKING AND SHAKING WHILE IN TRANSIT AS WELL AS A BURNING SMELL FROM THE REAR END.

A sufficient amount of oil could damage the alternator resulting in illumination of the charging system warning lamp and disablement of the charging system. If the vehicle is continually driven with a disabled charging system, the engine can shut off, increasing the risk of a crash.

THE CAR WOULD CRANK BUT NOT START. HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM ABOUT A MONTH AGO, THE CAR FINALLY STARTED AFTER SITTING AWHILE. THIS TIME WHEN IT HAPPENED I COULD NOT HEAR THE FUEL PUMP RUN. I DETERMINED THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT WORKING. WHEN I WENT TO REMOVE THE FUEL PUMP I DISCOVERED THE ACTUAL PROBLEM WAS A DEFECTIVE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION INSIDE THE FUEL TANK. THE PLASTIC TERMINAL PROTECTION INSIDE THE TANK WAS BURNED THROUGH AND THE TERMINAL MELTED. THE PASSENGER SIDE DASHBOARD HAS TWO LONG CRACKS AROUND OR WITHIN THE AIRBAG AREA. BASED ON SOME GOOGLE SEARCH, THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM IN THE SONATA. THERE HAS BEEN AN ODOR OF GASOLINE ENTERING THE PASSENGER CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. I NOTICED IT IS "WORSE" WHEN I FILL THE VEHICLE WITH GAS BUT THE PROBLEM OCCURS MORE FREQUENTLY THAN THAT. I see that the manufacturer has an "Open Service Campaign" on their Sonata's shark fins. I've taken mine to the local dealership and they want a min. $700 to replace the shark fin. It just came off somewhere (a couple of years ago) and, now, my car has to be jumped off if I let it sit more than two days. I have had it inspected by the dealer and an individual garage. No one would tell me what was draining my battery. I am a senior citizen and fear I will get stranded on the road somewhere. The missing fin lets water into my car, soaking the carpets, etc. Finally, it was suggested that the car cover I keep on it touches the exposed fin components and that's what was draining my battery. It seems that the manufacturer was aware enough of this faulty part to want to prevent complaints by voluntarily replacing problematic parts (thus the service campaign). And, there are a lot of videos on YouTube from DIY folks who've suffered through replacing the shark fins (many different models) themselves. It seems, however, the manufacturer only notified dealers with said "open service campaign," not the public, as in a proper Recall process. That way, they get to make more money off the public when the part falls off? Please advise how one might get the dealers to do the right thing. Thank you.

All car systems flashed and car went completely dead. Nothing worked. First time it happened mechanic said alternator and battery had to be changed. A year and a half later exact same thing happened and again new mechanic says the alternator needs to be changed. BIG SAFETY ISUUE AS CAR DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAY WITH CARS GOING ALL AROUND ME TRYING TO AVOID ME. This is Second time the alternator has to be replaced with only 2000 miles on the car after the alternator was replaced the first time.

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his grandson was holding the inside rear driver's side door handle to exit the vehicle, the door handle cut his hand and he started bleeding abundantly. The contact and other family members were able to provide first aid to his grandson. The contact also stated that while holding the inside front passenger's side door handle to exit the vehicle, the door handle cut his hand. The contact immediately sought medical assistance at the nearest pharmacy. The contact stated that the vehicle door handles shining coating had peeled off and the remaining part of the coating had curled up and formed sharp blades. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that all four door handles needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they would send out a field technician to inspect the vehicle. The contact stated that the manufacturer followed up and inquired for his signature so they could proceed with the inspection of his vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

I HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. THE ROTORS WERE WARPED FROM THE PADS CONSTANTLY RUBBING ON THEM. CLEARLY THERE IS A PROBLEM HERE WITH THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS I SEE. MY BRAKE LIGHT STOP SWITCH BROKE INTO PIECES WITH NORMAL USE SO THE BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON WHEN CAR IS TURNED OFF. TAKATA RECALL. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ELECTRICAL MODULE IS DEFECTIVE BY AUTOZONE,. WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WE PULLED OVER TO CHECK THE USUAL STUFF LIKE OIL AND ANTIFREEZE AND OTHER FLUIDS. BUT ALL OF THEM WERE OK. WE TRIED TO LEAVE AGAIN WITH NO SUCCESS. WE HAD NO POWER. THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OVER BUT WHEN WE TRIED TO PRESS THE GAS NOTHING WOULD GO. SO WE STOPPED THE CAR WAITED FOR A WHILE AND THEN THE CAR STARTED. WE COUNTINUED OUR TRIP CAREFULLY, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON. AFTER WE ARRIVED TO OUR DESTINATION I WENT TO AUTOZONE TO CHECK THE PROBLEM. AS I WAS DRIVING UP A HILL IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD, THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING EXTREMELY LOUD NOISES AND IT WOULD NO LONGER RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR. THIS WAS ON A NARROW TWO WAY STREET. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER WHO SAID IT NEEDS A USED MOTOR PUT IN IT FOR $4600 AS IT HAS "AN INTERNAL ENGINE PROBLEM" WITHOUT GOING IN TO SPECIFICS. WHILE SLOWING AT AROUND 25-30 MPH THE CAR WOULD "JERK" FORCEFULLY LIKE A SUDDEN STOP. THIS HAPPENED EVERY DAY. IT WOULD IMPROVE AS IT WARMED UP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS GIVEN EXCUSES (THEY TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED FLUSHED-AT MY EXPENSE, MY DRIVING HABITS, ETC). FINALLY AFTER SEVERAL TRIPS TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEY ADMITTED THE ISSUE. THE TRANSMISSION WAS EVENTUALLY REPLACED AFTER THEY "RESET" AND FLUSHED THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION. IT SEEMED TO GET BETTER. I STILL FEEL THE "JERK" IN THE DOWNSHIFT, BUT IT IS NOT AS BAD AS IT WAS. MY ESC OFF AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON. MY MECHANIC INDICATED IT WAS DUE TO A BAD BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH AS MY REAR BRAKE LIGHTS AND CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT WORK. HE REPLACED THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH BUT A COUPLE DAYS LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON. THE COMPUTER LISTED A DIFFERENT CODE, STATING THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IS NOT COMPATIBLE, BUT THE REAR BRAKE LIGHTS WORK OFF AND ON. 5/18/24 in the afternoon, driving the car on freeway. the car lost power. AC stopped. Heat and check engine lights came on. Pulled car to shoulder. Driver’s window was foggy. Smoke coming from front. Exited the car. Flames seen underneath front of car and passenger compartment. Smoke worsened and within minutes 10 foot high flames engulfed the car. Fire department had to extinguish the flames. And California Highway Patrol blocked off several lanes. The vehicle totally was incinerated. I filed a police report number 240518LA2144. I do not have the report yet. It is not ready. It was filed with the California highway patrol.

I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 75 WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. THE CAR LOST SPEED GRADUALLY FROM 60 MPH TO 10 MPH. FORTUNATELY I WAS NEAR AN EXIT AND WAS ABLE TO EXIT AND STOP AT A HOTEL PARKING LOT. THIS WAS A FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE SINCE OTHER CARS WERE SPEEDING AROUND ME AT 70+ MPH, THEN CUTTING IN FRONT OF ME TO EXIT THE INTERSTATE. THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER AT LEAST THREE TIMES BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH NO OTHER RESULT. NO REASON WAS FOUND FOR THE PROBLEM. NEW TIRES HAD 3877 MILES ON THEM WHEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR TIRE SUFFERED A SUDDEN, RAPID LOSS OF AIR TRAVELING ON A MAINTAINED COUNTY HIGHWAY AT 55 TO 60 MILES PER HOUR. THE TIRE WAS EXAMINED AT THE DEALERSHIP AND DETERMINED TO HAVE A SLICE OR CUT IN THE SIDEWALL RESULTING IN EXTREME, RAPID TIRE FAILURE. THERE WAS NEITHER NO POTHOLE OR FOREIGN OBJECT TRAVERSED PRIOR TO THE EXTREME, SUDDEN TIRE FAILURE. HAVING BEEN A CERTIFIED EMERGENCY VEHICLE OPERATIONS INSTRUCTOR, AND HAVING SERVED AS A COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR THE STATE OF WISCONSIN, DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AS AN ADVISOR FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLE OPERATIONS, I AM MOST CONFIDENT IN MY OBSERVATION AND ASSESSMENT. .ON JAN 24, 2009, I PURCHASED A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED FROM THE FAIRFAX HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP' LOCATED IN FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA. ON MAR 27, 2010, I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR MY 15, 000 MILE SERVICE. I INFORMED THE DEALER THAT I DID NOT LIKE THE WAY IN WHICH MY LEFT FRONT TIRE WAS WEARING, AND REQUESTED THAT THEY LOOK AT THE WHEEL AND ADVISE ME ACCORDINGLY. THE DEALER LATER ADVISED ME THAT I NEEDED A FRONT END ALIGNMENT, AND FURTHER ADVISED ME TO HAVE THE ALIGNMENT DONE ON THAT VISIT. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE SERVICE MANAGER ADVISED ME THAT HIS TECHNICIAN WAD ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEMS PERFORMING THE ALIGNMENT BECAUSE THE LEFT FRONT CAMBER AND TOW WERE OFF. CONSEQUENTLY, HE ADVISED ME THAT THE TECHNICIAN WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE THE ORIGINAL LEFT UPPER BALL JOINT AND REPLACE IT WITH A NEW ONE. BETWEEN 2010 & 2014, THE NEGATIVE WEARING OF MY LEFT FRONT TIRE CONTINUED. THIS REQUIRED ME TO ROTATE MY LEFT FRONT TIRE CONSTANTLY, AND TO CHANGE MY TIRES FREQUENTLY. ON MAR 10, 2015, MY LEFT FRONT UPPER BALL JOINT COLLAPSED, AND THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL FELL OFF THE VEHICLE. POWER STEERING GOES OUT RANDOMLY DURING TURNS WHILE ON CITY STREETS OR HIGHWAYS. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC WHO TESTED THE POWER STEERING AND FOUND NO ISSUE WITH THE POWER STEERING PUMP. THE PUMP IS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER AND DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD SEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THE STEERING, WITH A RECALL ISSUED, ON 2008 AND 2011 SONATA MODELS, HOWEVER THE 2009 MODEL WAS NOT INCLUDED. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH. ON THOSE RECALLS THE COMPUTER CIRCUIT BOARD IN THE POWER STEERING CONTROL UNIT HAD BECOME DAMAGED AND MADE THE VEHICLE MORE DIFFICULT TO TURN POSSIBLY CAUSING A WRECK. STEERING ISSUE HAS BEEN ONGOING OVER THE YEARS.

ON JULY 1, 2014 THE REAR CALIPER ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF MY CAR HAD SEIZED, STRIPPING THE BRAKES TO METAL ON METAL. ON AUGUST 30, 2014, THE REAR CALIPER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR FOLLOWED SUIT. LESS THAN ONE YEAR LATER I HAVE REPLACED EACH OF THE REAR CALIPERS ONCE AGAIN. I HAD THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE REPAIRED ON MAY 15, 2015, AND THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE ON JUNE 9, 2015. I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH JUST OVER 53,000 MILES ON IT IN 2013. TODAY, IT HAS 101,000 MILES ON IT AND I HAVE REPLACED FOUR CALIPERS, THREE ROTORS AND FIVE SETS OF BRAKE PADS. EACH TIME MY CALIPERS FAILED I WAS PLACED IN DANGER OF TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE AND FIRE, UNKNOWINGLY. THE MECHANICS WHO WORKED ON MY CAR HAVE INDIVIDUALLY THEORIZED THAT AN ENGINEERING FAILURE IS THE CAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. LAST WEEK I CONTACTED HYUNDAI FOR FINANCIAL REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIRS. THE COMPANY STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT REIMBURSE ME SINCE THE PARTS WERE NOT REPLACED WITH HYUNDAI FACTORY PARTS, OR REPAIRED BY A HYUNDAI CERTIFIED DEALERSHIP. I AM AWARE THAT THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST HYUNDAI BASED ON THIS ISSUE IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK. Vehicle sat in driveway for one week while on cruise. The day of return the sonata caught on fire without any person touching the car for one week. Brother who’s house it was at was woken by neighbors at 7sm. Home had minor damage, but it could of been bad if it was in someone’s garage. Fire started in engine and console. Fire department could not find out a reason. Car was totaled. Had to rent a car to get home that was 2 hours away. Never had an issue with this vehicle in the 12 years I owned it.

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power and stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle failed to restart. The contact pushed the vehicle to the side of the road with the assistance of her father. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who referred the contact to the local dealer. The vehicle was then towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The fuel pump was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The dealer then diagnosed that the gasoline needed to be pumped out. The repair was completed; however, the failure recurred. The battery was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The dealer diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle had been at the dealer for 3 months. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. The dealer stated the car needs a new engine.

We purchased this vehicle used 9/2022. A week later it began to jump upon accelerating and slowing down. We took it in and they said it was the power train control module and our warranty would not cover it. So it would cost us around $1600. We can’t afford that. We have only driven it a few times since. We were parked in front of a curb and the car accelerated us into a curb. Now, the ESC OFF, ABS, and engine light are illuminated. This is not a. It also wear and tear issues, as I’ve seen many others posting similar experiences. Our car is an ‘09 with almost 90,000 miles on it.

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact heard a loud grinding noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer to be inspected. The contact later discovered that the dealer only did a visual inspection of the brake pads and rotors. The mechanic stated that there were metal shavings from the brake pads and that the contact should wash the wheels to clear the metal shavings. The wheels were washed as instructed; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 181,000.

HYUNDAI HAS MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE NO ACTIVE RECALLS AND THAT THIS PART IS LIFE THREATENING IF IT FAILS - BUT SINCE THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED THEY ARE SHYING AWAY. ONLINE THERE ARE SEVERAL KNOWN ISSUES WITH HYNDAI AND HECU. SPECIALLY FOR MODELS BEFORE 2009. ON 10/08/2009 MY 209 HYUNDAI SONATA WENT INTO AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. AS SOON AS I PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE IT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK AND I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL. I WAS ON A NARROW DIRT ROAD WITH LITTLE LIMITED OPTIONS AS TO WHERE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. I MISSED A BOULDER, GARAGE, AND TREE BEFORE HITTING THE SIDE OF A HOUSE. THE AMBULANCE WAS CALLED AND I WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE LOCAL EMERGENCY ROOM. I HAD A CONCUSSION, FRACTURED KNEE ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF BRUISES AND ABRASIONS. THE EMTS TOLD ME HOW LUCKY IF WAS SINCE THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY.. AN INTERNET SEARCH, INCLUDING YOUR WEBSITE, NOTES THESE PROBLEMS GOING BACK SEVERAL YEARS. IN FEBRUARY OF 2015, LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED, I NOTICED THE LEFT REAR TIRE WAS SCREECHING WHEN IN MOTION LIKE A BELT IN THE ENGINE WOULD. I TOOK IT TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY MADE ME AWARE THAT THE CALIPER HAD LOCKED UP AND NEEDED TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED & REPAIRED ALONG WITH A BRAND NEW ROTOR. I FIGURED THIS WAS JUST A ONE TIME ISSUE, UNTIL JUST THIS MONTH (FEBRUARY OF 2016) LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER REPAIRING THE CALIPER AND BRAKE SYSTEM IN THE LEFT REAR TIRE, A STRONG BURNING SMELL WAS APPEARING PERIODICALLY FROM THE RIGHT REAR TIRE AFTER ANY DRIVE. TOOK THE CAR TO THE SAME HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHO MADE ME AWARE THAT THE CALIPER WAS NOW LOCKED UP IN THE RIGHT REAR TIRE AND NEEDED TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED AND REPAIRED. IN BOTH CIRCUMSTANCES I WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ABSOLUTELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE OFF THEIR LOT AND HAD TO GET A RENTAL CAR TO LEAVE THE CAR FOR REPAIRS. I DID MY RESEARCH... APPARENTLY THIS SAME MAKE/MODEL/YEAR HAS GIVEN LOTS OF PEOPLE THE SAME ISSUES.. BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN MADE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE KEY WAS IN THE IGNITION WHEN SHE EXITED THE VEHICLE AND THE DOORS ERRONEOUSLY LOCKED. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE CHROME ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE FRONT DOOR HANDLE WAS PEELING AND TORE THROUGH THE CONTACT'S HAND. ADDITIONALLY, THE STEERING WHEEL FAILED TO LOCK AND THE VEHICLE JERKED ABNORMALLY WHEN SHIFTING DOWN. I NOTICED A SHUDDERING AT 90,250 MILES, WHILE TRAVELING DURING THE WINTER AT AROUND 30-45 MPH, BUT WAS VERY INTERMITTENT, AND WOULD GO AWAY. THEN ON 10/9/2013 AT 102,515 MILES, FROM PARK, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT ENGAGE INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE. I COULD HEAR THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT, BUT IT WAS NOT DISENGAGING FROM PARK. PER HYUNDAI SERVICE TECHNICIAN, THE TRANSMISSION WAS "JUNK" AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CORPORATE, DURING WHICH TIME I WAS INFORMED THEY DIDN'T HAVE MY INFORMATION IN THEIR SYSTEM AND THAT IN FACT THERE WERE 2 RECALLS THAT THEY FAILED TO NOTIFY ME OF, AND WAS TOLD THAT IF I ALLOWED THE HYUNDAI SERVICE TO DO THE REPAIR RIGHT THEN, THAT I WOULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR THEIR POLICY REIMBURSEMENT. ONE OF THE RECALLS WAS AN ECM AND TCM SOFTWARE UPDATE IN WHICH SYMPTOMS WERE IMPROPER CLUTCHING AND DE-CLUTCHING OF GEARS WHEN ACCELERATING AND DECELERATING. THAT SHIFT QUALITY OVER TIME CAUSED UNDO STRESS ON THE GEARING CAUSING MY FAILURE. THE REPAIR WAS MADE, I THEN HAD TO PAY UPFRONT, AND A WEEK LATER THEY'VE DENIED MY POLICY REIMBURSEMENT CLAIM DUE TO FLUID BEING THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. I THEN PROVIDED THEM WITH FURTHER DOCUMENTATION SHOWING THAT THEIR OWN TECHNICIAN RE-USED 5 QUARTS OF MY ORIGINAL FLUID ON THE REPAIR ORDER, AND THAT I FOLLOWED THE MAINTENANCE RECORD THAT WAS SUGGESTED BY THEIR OWN TECHNICIANS ADVICE WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. DRAIN AND FILL EVERY 30,000 MILES. THE LAST DRAIN AND FILL WAS ON JUNE 14, 2013. HYUNDAI DID NOT PROVIDE ME WITH ANY FLUID ANALYSIS OR SPECS TO SUPPORT THEIR DENIAL OF MY POLICY REIMBURSEMENT. I HAVE REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES 5 DIFFERENT TIMES IN LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. I PURCHASE PREMIUM, NAME BRAND TIRES WITH A MILEAGE RATING OF 60,000 MILES. IN 2011 I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR ALIGNMENT AT A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THEY INFORMED ME THAT "ALL LOWER CONTROL ARMS, CAM BOLTS AND BUSHINGS SEIZED DUE TO RUST; CAN'T ALIGN PROPERLY. I HAD A PLATINUM EXTENDED 100,000 MILE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY THROUGH HYUNDAI. THE DEALERSHIP CALLED TO ADVISE OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE ADJUSTER CAME AND INSPECTED AND "EXTENDED WARRANTY DENIED COVERAGE AS RUST WAS THE CAUSE, THEY WILL NOT PAY FOR REPAIRS." THE DEALERSHIP ARGUED THAT THIS IS THE NORTHEASTERN PART OF THE US AND WE HAVE SNOW AND THE ROADS ARE SALTED IN THE WINTER. DEALERSHIP FELT THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED AND TRIED AGAIN BUT COVERAGE DENIED. AS THE OWNER I CALLED THE ABOUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND WAS ALSO DENIED. BECAUSE CORRECT ALIGNMENT IS NOT POSSIBLE DUE TO RUST ISSUES THERE IS A HANDLING/STABILITY PROBLEM IN THE VEHICLE CAUSED FROM RUSTED ALIGNMENT COMPONENTS.
