My 2016 Hyundai Sonata with the DOHC GDI Theta-II engine is experiencing severe engine oil consumption consistent with Hyundai's known TXXI/TXXC extended warranty defect. The oil pressure warning has flashed while driving or braking, the engine runs rough when slowing down, engine has made knocking noises, and there is smoke/vapor with a burnt oil smell when removing the oil cap after driving. The oil level drops rapidly between changes despite proper maintenance. This issue poses a risk of engine failure, stalling, or fire while driving. I have maintained the vehicle on time with all oil change receipts. A Hyundai dealership refused to perform the required warranty diagnostics even though this issue falls under Hyundai's extended warranty for Theta-II engines. This is a serious safety concern, and no corrective action has been taken.

My Hyundai is experiencing severe and continuous engine oil consumption that creates a safety risk. The vehicle loses a significant amount of oil within 1,000–1,500 miles, sometimes showing almost no oil on the dipstick despite recent oil changes. There are no external leaks, no burning smell, and no visible oil under the car. The cause remains UNKNOWN, but it appears to be internal engine burning or a manufacturing defect. I have taken the vehicle to the Hyundai dealer multiple times. They performed oil consumption tests but either reported “normal results” or did not provide clear explanations. The issue continues exactly the same. I also contacted Hyundai corporate, but no meaningful assistance or goodwill support was provided. The dealer acknowledges no leaks but still refuses to repair or replace the engine. This problem is dangerous because the oil level drops without warning lights or error codes. If I do not manually check the dipstick, the engine could run dry and seize while driving. Sudden engine failure on highways or in traffic can cause accidents. I now have to frequently top up oil just to keep the engine alive. I have maintained the vehicle properly and completed all requested tests. The cause is still UNKNOWN, but based on similar Hyundai cases, it may involve piston rings, valve seals, or internal engine wear. Many Hyundai owners report the same issue, suggesting a broader defect. The dealer’s only advice is to “keep monitoring oil,” which is not a safe long-term solution. This defect poses a serious safety concern and financial burden. I am filing this complaint so NHTSA can investigate, as the engine may fail unexpectedly, putting me and others at risk.

Car has been consuming oil fast since around 75,000 miles. Car is under 100,000 miles and I have been told by an independent shop that it basically has piston ring failure which means engine failure.

The vehicle is going through oil very quicky. No leaks no burning.

This car burned oil like crazy from the start. We kept the oil changed regularly, had to change spark plugs weekly and add a quart or more of oil each week in between oil changes. One day whole stopped at a red light the engine started knocking for no reason. Once diagnosed it turned out that it had spun a rod bearing. These engines need to be recalled before someone ends up in a fatal accident. This car was driven daily on a major interstate thankfully the issue happened at a red light, but has left me with a car note and a non drivable car. What’s it gonna take to get these engines recalled and replaced?

Car been burning oil since i got it . I have been taking it back and forth to the dealership they not helping and I’m basically paying a note on a car i can’t even enjoy

My dad gave me his car a little bit ago, and I just learned there is a cap and sensor part in the engine that fills with oil which triggers the check engine light. I nearly got hit because I didn't know the car couldn't accelerate properly when this happens. My neighborhood exits onto the main road at an incline and my car wouldn't move faster than 10 mph while cars were coming behind me at 45. I was terrified. My dad told me had the same problem. He took it to the dealership to be repaired when it happened to him and they said it was fixed, so apparently it is a reoccurring problem.

Wind deflector came loose on highway after recall was performed. The wind deflector was originally reattached in 1996 shortly after purchase. The recall doesn't take into account that the manufacturing issue may of been previously repaired. I believe when the "recall" was performed(2020) the lack of removing the previous adhesive created a weak bond enabling the wind deflector to become detached. Attached is a copy of the recall instructions which contains no step to remove previous adhesives or check for previous repairs; only the use of alcohol to remove dust or particles. Hyundai corporate followed through on an investigation Case Number #[XXX](December 2024) finding that the recall was performed and they had no ability to investigate the proper method for subsequent repairs. Referring the issue back to local dealerships to apply their own judgement. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Power steering fails intermittently
Jul 07, 2025
Steering sticks and releases under pressure at 60/65+ mph on interstate. Very difficult to keep vehicle in lane consistently. Constantly correcting both right & left to maintain straight line is extremely fatiguing especially on long trips. Safe driving at highway speeds is compromised and presents safety concerns for occupants as well as motorists nearby in addition to the apprehension it creates wondering if you're able to correct the steering drift before having an accident. There aren't any dashboard warning indicators when this happens Reported to dealer in central Florida on March 22, 2024 and dealer ordered parts Ref TSB 23-ST-003H. Hyundai Extended warranty TXXO. Factory has sent some parts to dealer twice that I know of and each time vehicle has been taken to dealer I've been told they were not what was needed. On most recent appointment of 12/19/24 I was told the needed parts were unattainable from Hyundai. On 3/20/2025 the dealer has offered to put in some of the parts they have as a possible solution but repair has not been scheduled. Dealer said they had another vehicle that took over a year to repair. This has been 14 months. We're only using this vehicle at slow speeds locally, anticipating complete failure, as we don't trust it for highway use.

Intermittent loss of steering with my Hyundai Sonata 2016 since April 2024. Vehicle randomly loses power steering while turning and 2 warning lights appear (power steering light (eps)and traction control). This has put me and my passengers at risk several times- almost crashing into other cars and objects. I went to the mechanics two times- they have recalibrated steering angle and reset codes, but the problem continues, and I lose power steering intermittently. This is a very big safety risk and I am afraid to continue driving my car.

I took in my 2016 Hyundai Sonata to Anaheim Hyundai in California for 60,000 mile service. The Sonata was having power steering issues where time to time the power steering would go out. I bought the extended warranty so it was cover under the warranty but Hyundai stop making these parts according to the dealership. I don't understand how Hyundai can stop making a power steering parts to Sonata models from 2016-2019 when there are so many on the road with potential power steering safety issues. I was told by the dealership there are so many issues with these Sonata's, the power steering parts are hard to find. They had no idea if they could get OEM parts or even find after market parts. I was originally told on [XXX] when we took the car in it would take 2 to 3 days now two and half weeks later they have changed their story to "not sure when they are going to get the part" I don't understand how this was not a recall from Hyundai similar to Hyundai Sonata recall in 2016 for Sonata's made in 2010-2011. It appears Hyundai has multiples models with power steering issues and yet they stop making the parts, why? I would like someone at NHTSA to review the power steering failures that may or may not be being reported by Hyundai dealerships. Just trying to get the car fixed since my son drives it. Thank you. The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel seized upon turning the steering wheel in either direction. The vehicle then stalled with several unknown warning lights flashing on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with a defective steering module. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.

I’ve had this vehicle for exactly 6 months. First incident where I thought the company I bought it from lied to me because they said they topped off my oil. In reality it guzzles oil excessively, I paid $600 to get it cleaned out & add oil. 2nd incident my car shut off at a McDonald’s drive through, no indication of warning of shutting off until 30 seconds before all error codes on dash. 3rd incident as of 02/07/23 car completely out of oil when I had an oil change a month & a half ago. Had someone come & bring me oil & it seemed to get me a mile away to school, did my school stuff & then tried to get home (30 miles away). When trying to get home my car wouldn’t exceed 60mph and when I got to 62mph it was decreasing speed. After a few moments after noticing that, all error codes on dash came on and I thankfully was able to pull over on the freeway without being hit by anyone. My car completely shut down, called a tow truck, while I waited 3 hours for assistance. I was then notified(by the first shop I took it to) the next day that my motor is BAD & I’m lucky that I was able to pull off to the side of the road when I did. A week prior to the 3rd incident random chunks of painting ripped off my vehicle(on the top of my trunk, above the passenger door & on the back side of the passenger door). I had my vehicle towed a second time to the Hyundai dealership themselves and the towing company asked the color of vehicle/make and model and instantly said oh is it your motor? I was weirded out because I was wondering how he knew. He mentioned to me that he has towed 25 Hyundais in the last 9 months. I said well you’re on a role, you can now make it 26. I was also never notified of any recalls on this vehicle until 2 days after the 3rd incident I did my own research and called Hyundai dealership myself & that’s when I was made aware of a recall. Insurance also states that this isn’t something I can claim? & I’m currently waiting to hear back from the dealership themselves.

When I lift the switch to turn on the right turn signal, the high beam headlights flash on and off. It switches from auto to on then back to auto. I'm not moving the switch front to back, only up and down.
Jan 28, 2024
The headlight setting changes on its own, it will change when using the blinker or it'll just change on its own. By change I mean the headlights turn off. Even if it's set to auto, they still go completely off. My bulbs don't need to be replaced. It's been happening for a few months now. I can't recall a specific date
Jul 24, 2023
Since the previous recall associated with the turn signal sometimes signaling in the wrong direction, I have noticed for months that when driving at night when the turn signal is on in either direction the lights function will start moving from on to auto to off causing the lights to turn off when signaling. This is very dangerous especially at night.
Apr 05, 2023
While driving at night, when I engage my turn signal to make a turn and my headlights go off. The headlights stay off until I play with the turn signal leaver moving it up, down, forward, and backward until the headlights come back on. I see this as a major safety issue. Driving a night without headlights impairs my ability to see and for other vehicles to see me. A search on the internet displays many websites discussing this issue for my year, make and model of car. Local Hyundai said there is no recall. There was no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms presenting on this issue. It appears there is a malfunction in the turn signal switch. This has been occurring for over a month.

Recently purchased vehicle. Did not test drive at night or we never would have purchased. While driving at night, the low beams cast a black, unlit area in front of the vehicle. It's so bad that anyone crossing the street in front of vehicle would not be seen. It is incredibly dangerous, yet the dealer says the lights are set to manufacturers specifications. This is a serious safety issue. It has already caused us quite a few close calls with people and items in the roadway. Please help, as we cannot afford to trade it in, and although the dealer admits its a serious safety problem, there's nothing they can do.

SERVICE BRAKES

While driving on the highway, there was a sudden beep sound followed by the ABS light, the brake lights turning on, and the traction control light turning on. The vehicle keeps moving and the breaks are not working, and the brake pedal is too tight to press. To avoid a collision on the highway, I used the emergency brake to stop the vehicle If I turn off the engine and then turn it back on, I can drive, but again the same problem begins, and we must use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. A local Hyundai dealer has been notified about this issue, but it has been 3 days since they have not been able to resolve it

Please contact me for more details on issues and info on this dealership (Kendall Hyndai in Miami I know there something wrong with the way they’re responding to this very dangerous brake issue’s before it cause l serious injuries or. fatalities Took the car to dealership with an abs light on and stop check brakes light as well had total brake failure after running diagnostic the said I need to change the pressure source unit which cost me 4k after picking up vehicle and driving a few mile had same issue happen they said I need to change both rear bearing sensors which is another. 1500 iam feeling like this is a very serious issue and the are just charging me as much as they can . I called another dealer close by and found that they charged way less labor and parts fees example ~ was charged 289 an hour other dealer 190 plus less hour as well the parts were same issue paid 2159 for pressure source unit and other dealer was 1900 plus a shipping fee of 100 to get it faster the other dealer said the don’t charge for that in other words the dealer I went to Kendall Hyndai was way over charging for every aspect of my issue this unexceptable to me and should be looked into!!!! This more importantly is a dangerous problem when you lose breaks unexpectedly which could cause serious bodily harm to one self and the second part of the dealer charging way more than reasonable prices is also unbelievable and disturbing as well

ABS system lights up and stop car and check brakes flashes loss of brakes completely!!!!
Apr 10, 2023
ABS light has been on since the car had under 40k miles on it...I took it in and they won't repair without cost to myself although my car was under warranty. I had it looked at again at 79k miles and they still won't do anything about it. This also affects (according to them) how the transmission shifts which is a really hard shift when accelerating. I have had animals (deer and dogs) jump in front of me while driving and my brakes lock up and cause me to swerve out of control.

The contact called on behalf of the driver. The contact owned a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while the driver was driving approximately 30 MPH the vehicle braking system functionality completely failed. Then shortly after there was smoke exhausted from the hood. There were no warning lights. The driver was able to cruise to the nearest parking, got the vehicle down to 5 MPH, and forced the brakes on. Upon exiting the vehicle the smoke became more intense and spread in the cab. The vehicle was destroyed by the fire. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. There was a police report filed. There were no major injuries; just minor smoke inhaled. The vehicle was towed to the wrecking yard. There were no medical reports. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000.

White paint peeling off above windshield.
Dec 11, 2024
My 2016 Hyundai Sonata (pearl white) paint is peeling in many parts of my car. I went to Delray Hyundai where I purchased it in 2019. In August of 2023 I showed a supervisor and she set up an appointment for me to bring in the car for pictures. After Delray Hyundai took pictures I waited and waited to hear from them. I went to the dealership and spoke to the supervisor I was dealing with and she keep giving me excuses why they couldn't do it at that time, she keep telling me they didn't have a loaner car for me, to call or come back. I was frustrated but felt like they were going to take care of the problem. Her name was Piper. Finally after many months I was told they wouldn't do anything for me, and I was told by a worker to try Coconut Creek dealer because they have a paint dept. Well I'm [XXX] old and by myself and I cannot get there. It's very far away and I would have to travel [XXX]. I asked if they would bring the car there for me and was told no. I called Coconut Creek Hyundai and they told me no they couldn't help me. I love my Car and always got compliments on it but it's peeling so bad that it looks awful and I would never get the true value if I traded it in because of the failed paint. I have read and seen pictures of many other people on the internet that have the same problem. Can you please help me. Now it's more than the one side the other side of the car is peeling Thanks INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The paint on my 2016 Hyundai continues to peel. I have gone to get the vehicle repainted to no avail. The roof paint came off again and even bigger than the original peel. This is absolutely ridiculous, I see my extract same car on the road with the extract same problems. Not to mention the oil consumption. Across the board these vehicles have all the same issues. No one should have to keep paying out of pocket for a manufacturing issue and no wrong doing of their own. This is Hyundai’s wrong doing and they need to be held accountable for manufacturing such a cheap car. At some point all of my paint is going to come off, I should not have to pay yet for another repainting. I will continue to file complaints, and escalate even further if needed. Someone needs to call me back with a solution regarding this matter.

I own a 2016 Hyundai Sonata and on vacation in Florida the cap to the shark Finn Antenna flew off on the highway. I noted there are recalls on newer versions of the Sonata but not on the 2016. I feel that is a problem that Hyundai should address as it is a safety hazard and could cause an accident resulting in injuries. Also the cost to replace the antenna is almost 500 dollar as they do not just sell the cover for the antenna. Thank you for any help you can provide in addressing this issue as I do not want anyone to get hurt because of this faulty problem with the antenna cover.

On November 10, 2025, my 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (VIN [XXX] , approximately 150,000 miles) experienced a sudden loss of power while I was turning right and accelerating into traffic. The vehicle immediately entered limp mode with flashing warning lights and audible alerts. The vehicle lost normal propulsion and could not accelerate properly, creating a dangerous situation as it was blocking a traffic lane. I was forced to limp the vehicle into a nearby parking lot to get out of traffic. The vehicle was not safely drivable afterward and was towed home. A few days later, the vehicle was towed to Murdoch Hyundai in Lindon, Utah, for diagnosis. The vehicle was found to have diagnostic trouble code P1326, which Hyundai identifies as activation of the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) related to connecting-rod bearing wear. This condition is part of Hyundai’s known engine defect and safety recall/warranty extension programs. During inspection, the dealer observed that the valvetrain did not show signs of neglect or sludge, which is inconsistent with oil starvation or severe maintenance neglect. This further supports that the failure is consistent with the known connecting-rod bearing defect addressed by Hyundai’s KSDS safety recall, rather than a maintenance-related issue. This is a safety issue because sudden loss of propulsion or reduced power while entering traffic creates a high risk of collision. Hyundai customer care has been unwilling to open a new case number or escalate review, and the dealer has indicated possible denial of engine replacement coverage based on incomplete oil-change records, despite the vehicle exhibiting the KSDS safety condition. I am requesting NHTSA review of this safety-related defect and the manufacturer’s handling of KSDS/P1326 failures. High engine oil consumption 2 qts every 1k miles.
Oct 30, 2025
My vehicle had the following symptoms: 1. Alternating between sluggish acceleration/handling AND rough acceleration with the vehicle lurching forward at times 2. Check engine light with error code P00010 3. Occurred frequently over a one month period (5+ times) This was unsafe as the car could not properly accelerate and would lurch forward at intersections. This could easily have led to a crash. We limited driving. This issue was observed at the dealer where I repaired issue. The issue is exactly the same as the issue described in the recall for Hyundai Sonata 2015 under SB-10058136-4434 and was resolved by replacement of the E-CVVT seal as described. This issue is ridiculous for me to deal with and put my family as risk given it a KNOWN issue for Hyundai in their other vehicles.

We have a Hyundai sonata that has been burning oil since 56,000 miles and has failed 5 oil consumption tests.the car is unsafe to drive. It stalls on highway and around town. It just stops running and leaves us stranded. The car now burns 4 quarts of oil every 1,000. We have to put oil in the car every week. The plugs fowl about every 4,000. . Car goes into stall or safe mode. We are afraid to drive the car and it's our only form of transportation. Hyundai just laughed at us. We have all maintenance records and still they won't fix the vehicle. We need help. The care is unsafe to drive because it stalls in traffic and we have almost been hit in the rear many times. I purchased a 2016 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L with the Theta II engine back in December 2016. I purchased it as a Hyundai Certified Pre-owned (CPO) vehicle, with the 10 year, 100,000 mi powertrain warranty. The car had approximately 36,000 mi on the odometer. Starting at about 60,000 mi on the odometer, I began to notice excessive engine oil consumption. The factory has made attempts to remedy the issue under the 10 year, 100,000 powertrain warranty coverage, but none have lasted more than 1,000 mi. After 1,000 mi of a "repair" service, the engine is back to consuming lots of engine oil. As a result, I have resorted to checking the dip every time I fuel up, and top off engine oil as it gets consumed. To my estimate, my oil consumption is between 200 to 300 mi per qt of oil consumed, which is well in excess of the factory acceptable levels of 400-500 mi per qt of oil consumed. Then, Hyundai USA's Customer Care's customer reps, case managers, and Hyundai National Managers all have told me in several occasions over the past two years that my car is either "out of warranty" (despite not yet having reached the 10 year, 100,000 mi mark, nor the extended 120,000 mi mark) or that Hyundai has never sold any Hyundai CPO cars with the 10 year, 100,000 mi powertrain warranty in the US, despite my sales records and owner's records indicating that my car came with the warranty. Hyundai is trying to breach its 10/100 powertrain warranty contract and trying to have me pay for the diagnostic and repair costs out of my pocket.

While driving (speed doesn’t matter, highway or city streets) the check hybrid system turn off engine message/code comes on. When u turn off the car and wait for a period of time the it’s not there anymore but the check engine light stays on and the car drive normal until the code comes back up. When the message comes up the engine loses power and and the car just slows down until the car is turned off. This is a safety hazard when you’re driving on a freeway and especially a freeway with no shoulder to pull over on or going through a read light with no speed. The car just does it periodically and when u take it to the dealership they say they can’t duplicate the problem. When all u do is hook a computer up and look for a code when the problem arises while driving you’re never going to find the issue. No the dealer hasn’t reproduced the problem because they didn’t drive the car just leaving it to sit up and checking codes doesn’t bring the problem to light. They wasn’t any warning signal or codes before this but not code p2600 and code p0401 are coming up. Spending $2000 for a part that will can’t be ordered anywhere but from the dealership and the problem still exist is not being logical. So many online reviews have the same problem and not one person has found out the problem from changing the electric water pump to transmission to the engine the warning sign still come back after some time. Me not being the 1st owner and the car out of warranty due to mileage is just robbing folks blinds with no solution.

The contact immediately veered to the side of the road. The contact then noticed flames under the front end of the vehicle, near the engine location. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the fire was extinguished independently. There was no injury sustained. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to her son-in-law's repair shop, where it remained. There was no police report filed. An unknown dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a repair fee would be charged for the engine replacement. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

The problem appeared on December 2020 in the middle of a Hwy 50 East in Washington DC. It was scary and dangerous. First it showed some malfunction sign on the screen and right way slowed down to 40 then 20 then zero. I push the gas pedal but didn't work. I have no idea what to do. I call Hyundai college park dealership agent explained what happened. She [XXX] told me to tow the car and suggested one of their partners tow truck driver. However when I turn off the car and turned on again it worked. The engine started to run. I begun to drive. After some time I took the car to the dealer and told me the car have safety recall. The repaired it and told me it will be ok. But in reality, it didn't. This happened again and again and again. Till this moment the engine continues to stalled in the middle of HWY . I got no solution from the dealership. When ever I visited they give me different issues that I need to fix. One time they said it is fuel pump and another day they said coolant pipe needs to get fixed. I am so tired of keep going to the dealer services. I put my life and my precious kids life at risk all the time while I am driving this car. It is frustration because I got no one to help me and understand why this issue is persistent. I don't want to end up being injured or got killed by an incident that caused by this problem. How awful it can be if a collision happens in the HWY. Car shut off on me twice as i driving. Once along time ago but again just October 18th while I was driving on the highway I know hyndai has a class action lawsuit against them but the fact it shut off on me twice and the first time the issue accrued I took it to Fairfax Hyundai and they weren’t phased at all and didn’t even bother to check/diagnose my car because I didn’t have a check engine light illumination at the time of incident ;because they were backed up with cars but a huge safety concern, and they just simply let me leave the shop and didn’t advise me to be safe/careful. I want to bring this to your attention because I have no voice and if anything could be taken from this is that I could’ve crashed and caused an accident the first time this ever happened because I was in the city bumper to bumper when it shut off on me and it’s would’ve been my fault and my issues to deal with. Also this car is very unreliable i don’t know what star rating you guys have gave this car but it needs to be a -0. I got it when it was at 89,000 from a private dealer but the car just went downhill since I got it then I have been nothing but Patient with the car along with keeping up with maintenance & recalls, but after 4-5 months I’ve already changed the transmission out of pocket @ around 100k miles , cv axle later on along with , right side whole knee suspension, engine packs and spark plugs TWICE, front break calipers, and now they’re changing the engine block warranted out through Hyundai after the car stalled out on me again the second time on oct 18th with an check engine light where the car is now getting warranty worked. I just hope you advocate and push demand on hyndai that they’re screwing consumers like me that have to deal with the pain & agony we have to go through these dealerships who try to charge us an arm and a leg.please do something about this dangerous situation and hold them accountable especially the private dealerships associated with hyndai please.

On Tuesday February 1st 2022, I was driving home from work on the interstate doing 70mph when my engine shut off. There was no warning lights ...nothing. By the grace of God I was able to pull over on the right shoulder without getting in an accident. That was TOTALLY unacceptable! Scared me to death! Come to find out the the engine blew! I babied this car which only had 104,000 miles. Hyundai knows about this problem and have done nothing to help compensate the owners of these . I have five kids and it is going to cost me 6,000 dollars for another engine. That cost includes labor as well. If you ever wanted to fight for the little guy, now is the time! Thank you in advance!

CAR ENGINE WILL REV UP AT LOW SPEEDS (30 MILES AND UNDER) AND GET STUCK. I HAVE TO PRESS THE BRAKE AND HOLD IT DOWN, PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND HIT GAS PEDAL TO GET IT TO GO INTO LOWER GEAR. HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. I HAVE TOLD THE HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPT ABOUT IT A FEW TIMES BUT THEY CANNOT REPAIR IT BECAUSE THEY CANNOT SIMULATE IT HAPPENING. FIRST HAPPENED APPROX. 2 YEARS AGO; DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. BUT NOW IT IS HAPPENING MORE OFTEN. 4 TIMES IN THE LAST MONTH. MOST RECENT TIME WAS 1/11/21.

The engine violently vibrates and no matter how much I get an oil change it burns so fast and I have to keep adding. It's not leaking, just burning. I plugged in a diagnostic tester and it said that the 3rd cylinder was misfiring. I haven't had the car for very long, and this is not normal. I take good care of it.

This event took place on or about [XXX]. A month or two prior, my vehicle had just undergone a safety inspection with over $2,000.00 worth of repairs that were performed with great care, due to noticing loss of power upon acceleration. I'm currently living in Wyoming, and the engine blew while driving on the highway in Colorado, causing a mild underbody fire while driving at high rate of speed. At this point, my safety is of great importance and concern, the radiator had internal damage that was not disclosed by the initial dealership, that took possession of my vehicle. So I truly don't know what or who to believe (which parts have been properly repaired on my vehicle or what has not), it took me to personally tow my own vehicle back to the local repair shop here in Wyoming, and the repair shop could not get power to the vehicle. Eventually the repair shop realized that the original "ground" bolt that "was" on my brand new battery was stripped out of place and replaced with a tapping screw, that's why no power was getting to the vehicle as needed to operate properly. The repair shop also noticed internal damage to the radiator (inside bay) with 2 puncture holes (that was not disclosed at any point of interacting with the dealership. Now my safety is an extremely huge concern. Again, I don't know if the vehicle is in worse or better condition with the most recent repairs that have been done to my vehicle. The engine was confirmed to have been damaged internally and externally "beyond repair". I was never given an exact description of any and all damages "requested by me at the time I called the dealership". My son and I are still without our vehicle, we are in dire need of transportation, and to have our vehicle back and running in a condition that is sufficient to perform for our everyday needs, to get back and forth to doctor appointments, etc. We are in great hopes to get this unnecessary nightmare behind us, so that we can press on with our lives....INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

1st Incident: The engine lost its acceleration power on the highway, giving a rattling noise. It was identified as misfire in cylinder 3. This was repaired and gaskets and timing chain replaced. 2nd Incident: The engine lost acceleration again on the highway with a loud rattling noise. On checking the OBD scanner it showed the Knock Sensor as the problem. On taking it into the dealership a KSDS software update was done. Current Situation: The car drinks up 2-3 qt of oil for every 1000 miles and has an intermittent rattling noise when accelerating Losing engine acceleration power on the middle of the highway is a very serious issue. And this keeps happening multiple times and Hyundai has refused to give me a proper explanation on this issue. Other mechanics have suggested to get a replacement from Hyundai as there is already a Lawsuit against these Faulty engines. On contacting Hyundai there has been no proper response. Please look into this as losing power on a busy highway poses danger not only to our car but to other oncoming vehicles as well. It has been a very harrowing experience for us and I am left with no option but to drive a faulty car which might lose power at anytime.

I ENGAGED MY HAZARD LIGHTS GIVEN I WAS IN HIGH TRAFFIC AT THAT TIME AND 'LIMPED' CAR TO THE NEARST GAS STATION, TO AVOID BEING STRANDED ON THE HIGHWAY. IT WAS TOWED TO A NEARBY LOCATION, RICHFIELD SERVICE CENTER-RICHFIELD WI. BOTH THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AND THE SERVICE STATION REP, SEAN, ADVISED THIS OIL-LEAKING ENGINE BUSINESS WAS A WIDESPREAD AND WELL-KNOWN MANUFACTURER DEFECT FOR THIS VEHICLE'S MAKE/MODEL/YEAR. THEY PERFORMED A BRIEF DIAGNOSTIC REVIEW AND ADVISED THE ENGINE WOULD NEED FULL REPLACEMENT TO CONTINUE DRIVING. I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER SERVICE ONLINE PORTAL THIS DAY, TOO AND HAVE REQUESTED THEY REPLACE THE ENGINE, GIVEN THE MILEAGE HAS NOT EVEN REACHED 77,000 MILES. I FOUND NO ACTIVE RECALL OR WARRANTY ON THIS VEHICLE BUT CAN PROVE I AM THE SECOND OWNER, HAVING INHERITED IT FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER, THE LATE [XXX] IN 2016/2017 (UNSURE EXACT DATE). THE VEHICLE IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION AT THIS TIME. AIR BAGS
9 complaints
On September 25, 2023, I was involved in a motor vehicle collision while driving my Hyundai Sonata 2016, during which the front driver-side airbag failed to deploy despite the impact being significant enough to cause injury. This non-deployment represents a malfunction of the airbag system, including its sensors and deployment components, and aligns with issues already reported in class-action complaints involving Hyundai vehicles, making my case further evidence that an airbag defect exists. Because the vehicle was declared a total loss by my insurance company and later sold at auction, the physical component is no longer in my possession now; however, I retain documentation on accident-related records that clearly show the airbag did not deploy. The failure of this critical safety system placed my safety at direct risk because the protective barrier intended to reduce impact forces was absent, resulting in greater injury than would reasonably be expected had the system functioned properly. The problem has not been reproduced yet because the vehicle was transferred to insurance immediately after the incident and was not repairable. But working with accident reconstruction engineers on this matter. Prior to the crash, the vehicle displayed no warning lights, SRS messages, or other symptoms indicating an issue with the airbag system, and at no time before the collision was I alerted to any malfunction that would have suggested the system would fail at the moment it was most needed.

I am submitting this complaint as a follow-up to my prior NHTSA complaint regarding the defective passenger seat Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS) in the 2016 Hyundai Sonata. Previous Tracking Number: 11689976 Since my initial submission, I have prepared a detailed technical and comparative report, which I am attaching here. The report documents how Hyundai’s repair policy for the OCS creates excessive repair costs (over $3,600 for a single sensor failure) and forces consumers to operate vehicles with compromised safety systems, in violation of the intent of FMVSS 208. The attached report provides: • Technical analysis of the OCS design and failure mode • Cost comparison with other manufacturers (Toyota, Honda, Ford, BMW, Mercedes-Benz) • Legal and consumer protection implications, including potential violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act • Supporting exhibits (service estimate and parts documentation) I respectfully request that NHTSA review this additional evidence in connection with my prior complaint and consider appropriate regulatory or enforcement actions. Thank you for your attention.
Sep 28, 2025
The problem originates from a single faulty passenger seat airbag sensor, but Hyundai requires replacement of the entire seat cushion module, quoted at approximately $3,200 for the part alone and around $4,000 total repair cost. This creates the impression that a single failed sensor affects the entire airbag system. I was not provided with a definitive answer as to whether this fault impacts the driver airbag, which leaves a critical safety uncertainty. By designing the sensor as an inseparable, non-serviceable part of the cushion module, Hyundai forces consumers into an unreasonable expense. This situation puts drivers in the position of either paying thousands of dollars or risking driving with potentially compromised airbag safety. I strongly believe this constitutes a serious safety defect and should be subject to recall.

Somehow, either by design or manufacturing defect, a part in the headlamp assembly melts and causes a gap in the illumination of the lights while driving. Technicians have said that this is a progressive issue, rather than some sudden onset, and multiple people have said they've never experienced this before but are having this issue with the Hyundai Sonata.

I am reporting a serious safety concern involving my 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, which has experienced multiple hybrid system shutdowns while driving. This includes repeated complete power loss incident on I-90 beginning in June 2022, when my daughter was driving home after her hospital shift. The vehicle displayed a “Hybrid System Warning – Turn Off Engine” message and had to be pushed off the highway and towed. This was the first of several hybrid-related failures that culminated in a full engine replacement under warranty at 82,015 miles — and now, the same hybrid system warning has returned at 127,592 miles, well within Hyundai’s 150,000-mile hybrid warranty. Hyundai is currently denying coverage. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate repeated hybrid system faults and warranty denial patterns in Korean-manufactured Sonata Hybrids.

I was driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata on a mountain highway and it started to run rough and lose power dramatically when accelerating. A dangerous situation on a steep curvy highway that has many one lane sections. Shortly thereafter a dash light came on. There was no warnings or dash lights or symptoms prior to this incident. I took the vehicle to a mechanic and ran the code. It said there was a misfire in cylinder 3. Replaced the ignition coil and spark plug for cylinder 3 and it did not fix the problem. The mechanic then pulled the motor to check the valves. Valve 3 was burnt, had a hole and stuck open. The car had approximately 75,180 miles. Well within the warranty time frame of 10yrs or 100,000 miles for an original purchaser. The mechanic had the valve machined, and replaced the head gasket and reassembled the the motor. I picked the car up and drove it home. Within 3 days I noticed an oil leak under neath the car where the engine bay is. I took the car back to the mechanic and he diagnosed a hairline crack in the oil pan. After some research I came across a letter from NHTSA on a defect investigation of Hyundai/Kia oil drain pan assemblies. This is exactly what happened to my car! I have paid 3500.00 to fix a car that has less than 76,000 miles. Hyundai needs to do better.

My 2016 Hyundai Sonata started using and leaking oil in August 2023 when it had about 129,000 miles and when you tried to go faster than 55 miles per hr. it would not accelerate. We feel there is a danger to drive it in traffic. We took it to the dealership in Pensacola, FL. They found a valve cover gasket had multiple leaks which they replaced. Found a code P1326 (whatever that means), Performed T3G campaign and followed a flow chart and BCT test passed. Don't know that any of this addressed the fact that the motor won't accelerate. Charged me $3,000 for something. Car ran okay for a while and started doing the same thing again. In June of 2024, took it to local mechanic who ran diagnostics and replaced a coil and plugs which cost another $600. It ran a little better until August 2024 and took it back to local mechanic who did another diagnostic and replaced 4 plugs and PCV valve for another $300. It's now November 2024 and the car won't accelerate over 55 mph and we can't use it to drive to work.

We were told from Tulsa Hyundai that our car was involved in a massive recall due to engine failure and that the warranty had been extended to 150,000 miles on Theta engines. They told us we had to follow the process in order to have a claim submitted to Hyundai corporate. They required us to pay for a valve gasket replacement and a valve cover gasket ($1000), then to take the car home and drive for 1000 miles and then bring it back in. We brought it back in and were required to pay for a combustion cleaning (around $800) and then take it home and drive it for 1000 miles. We brought it back in and they performed the oil consumption test. They then submitted the claim to Hyundai and we heard back the next day (9/18/2024) that they were denying they claim due to it being an issue with piston rings instead of rod bearing failure. I called Hyundai and they basically said there was nothing else they would do. They told us we could be reimbursed for the $1800 we had to spend to go through that process. Those fees were incurred were not necessary, especially when Hyundai is not going to replace the engine. Hyundai markets on their dealer websites, "engines for life", yet they will do nothing to replace our engine that is in failure.

The engine is consuming oil at abnormal rate. After receiving an oil change at a credible business the car is out of oil in a week. Hyundai will not check for oil consumption if the mileage is above 85k miles. Myself and my children can be stuck on the side of the road for engine failure due to the lack of oil. Express oil has stated this is not normal and a cause for concern. There are no warning signs for this problem. Only awareness from the performance of the cars decline to run properly.

We purchased a 2016 Hyundai Sonata in December 2020 for our son who is in college. In early August of 2022, my son noticed his oil light was coming on before it was time for an oil change. He had the vehicle topped off and maintained regular oil change and service schedule. While in for service at Fitzgerald Hyundai in Rockville, MD, August 2022, they replaced the spark plugs (4 cylinder tune-up) at 108,127 miles. The car continued to burn a lot of oil, so another appointment was scheduled at the dealership in Rockville September, 2022 at 111,792 miles. An oil and filter change, complete 23 pt. Vehicle Maintenance Inspection was performed, and all fluids topped off. The vehicle continued to burn oil at an unacceptable rate well before an oil change was required. My son continued to get oil changes and top off before the standard mileage. Another appointment was scheduled with the same dealer in Rockville, MD December 2022 at 118,989 miles requesting a diagnosis for the excessive oil consumption. After inspection, we were told an oil consumption test needed to be performed in order to determine why we are having this issue. We were also told that the spark plugs needed replacing again, less than 5 months from the previous replacement. Our service advisor said oil was probably shooting out onto the plugs. Hyundai denied the request to pay for the oil consumption test. The service advisor said she sees this a lot when I asked about excessive oil consumption on a vehicle with less than 120,000 miles. Also, they kept the car for almost 2 weeks. We are looking to rid ourselves of this piece of junk and purchase a vehicle by a reputable manufacturer. In the meantime, we are topping off and getting frequent oil changes. There definitely appears to be a defect with this year and model vehicle and Hyundai should acknowledge there is an issue and resolve it. I will never purchase another Hyundai and will spread the word to everyone I know, not to buy a Hyundai.

The vehicle experienced an engine and power train failure while driving on the highway, resulting in sudden loss of power. The electrical system also failed after the dealer visit, causing the battery to die every morning. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My car suddenly lost power on the highway and would not accelerate, forcing me to pull over on the shoulder with traffic moving around me. This created a serious risk of a rear-end collision or crash. Additionally, after the dealer visit, the electrical system began failing and the vehicle has been completely dead every morning, leaving me stranded with a child and unable to reliably start the car. The problem has not been reproduced because the check engine code cleared itself after the incident; however, the symptoms absolutely remain. The dealer refused to diagnose the loss-of-power event because the code was cleared, and they returned the vehicle to me with a dead battery. The electrical issue (car dying every morning) has been happening consistently since the dealer visit. The vehicle was taken to a Hyundai dealership immediately after the incident, but they refused to diagnose the loss of power due to the code being cleared. A mobile mechanic scanned the code at my home before the tow, but the code disappeared afterward. The electrical failure began after the dealer visit and has not been properly inspected by Hyundai. Yes. While driving on the highway, the check engine light came on and the car immediately lost power and would not accelerate. After the dealer visit, the car has been completely dead every morning and requires a jump to start. These symptoms began on the same day as the highway incident and continued after Hyundai serviced the vehicle.

My vehicle lost power exiting the freeway. I went from 70 miles an hour to 10 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. The Check Hybrid system, Turn off engine HEV ! triangle showed up on the dash, then the car slowed to a halt. I had to get my vehicle towed home, then towed to the dealer the next day. The problem with this is, for the past year, the Check Hybrid System HEV light would come on. I took it to the World Car Hyundai North dealership in Live Oak, Texas and a few months later, it's doing the same thing. My vehicle was in the shop at World Car Hyundai from March 24, 2022 until 9/9/2022. I drove my vehicle one week, went out of the country for 2 weeks and upon return, coming from the airport almost home, the car does the same thing. You would think after having my vehicle for 6 months, the problem would be fixed. I started bringing my car in for this problem September of 2021. I was told, I needed an oil change, a new battery, ne plugs, codes checked, etc. None of this seemed to fix my vehicle, because a few weeks later, the car would slow to an almost stop and I would have it towed to the dealership again. There has been several mechanics working on my vehicle and they've all said something differently. My vehicle was never written up for the correct problem until recently, when the manager was able to drive my vehicle and it stopped on him. I don't feel safe driving this vehicle anymore. I have taken this car to the dealer ship for the same problem, actually once in 2018 and every other month since 2021. I've been inconvenienced, , put on hold, far to long, I need a new vehicle and I need a loaner car, while my they're trying to figure out what to do. I've been told I needed a new engine twice, but all of a sudden, it passes the engine test and there is something else that the dealership is trying to do to fix the problem. Well, since I've been taking my car back and forth to the dealership, it is now out of warranty. The car remains unsafe to drive .

Car unexpectedly stopped working and became disabled while trveling 40 - 50 mph on the freeway. Complete loss of power. Danger of a collision on the freeway. All dash lights and warning lights came on. Car would not shift and would not accelerate. It was unsafe to drive and could hardly move off the road. The first year I had the car the engine light came on and loss of power. I took it to the dealership immediately. Whenever I took the car to the dealer they said there were no codes and the car was was fine. The entire time I owned the car I would lose power on inclined roads and engine light would come on and off. Last week November 18 the car stalled and could not drive uphill again risk of a collision from the rear. I took the car to the dealer they said the car was fine. The dealership has never tried to fix the problem and claimed they could not duplicate the problem. Today 12/1/2021 the car stopped operating on the freeway completely and I had to tow it to the dealership. This car has been a safety hazard within the first year and Hyundai has done anything to address the problem.

MOST IMPORTANTLY IT PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD IF YOUR CAR GETS TRAPPED UNDERWATER OR IT'S ON FIRE, THE VERY LONG & BASICALLY LOOSE BELT COULD TANGLE YOU UP LEAVING YOU TRAPPED IN THE VEHICLE TO DIE A SLOW DEATH. OFCOURSE IF THERE IS A FIRE YOU DO STAND A CHANCE THE FIRE WILL BURN THROUGH THE BELT BEFORE YOU'RE COMPLETELY DEAD.

I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING AND AS I BEGIN TO ACCELERATE THE CAR FELT AS IF IT WAS ABOUT TO STALL OUT. WHEN I CAME TO A STOP SIGN AND MADE A COMPLETE STOP AS I ACCELERATED TO DRIVE THE CAR DID THE SAME THING AS IF IT WANTED TO STALL OUT. NOW WHEN I'M DRIVING I CAN'T GO OVER 60 MPH AND ANY TIME I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND TRY TO ACCELERATE THE CAR ACTS AS IF IT WANTS TO STALL OUT SO I HAVE TO TAKE OFF SLOWLY THEN TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND PUT IT BACK ON AS IF IS HAVING TROUBLE GETTING GAS TO THE ENGINE. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND IT READ CODE P 1326. NOW MY CAR IS IN SAFETY MODE

HELLO I PURCHASED A 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA 4/8/2020 WITH 110,743 MILES ON IT WITH NOW 116,000. ABOUT A MONTH AGO MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH NO SYMPTOMS TO THE NAKED EYE . MAYBE A WEEK LATER I COULD FEEL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SPEED CONTROL THE AIR INTAKE SEEMED VERY SLUGGISH IT WON'T TAKE OFF FROM THE LINE IT WILL DRAG BEFORE IT DECIDES TO PICK UP SPEED . NOW THE ISSUE IS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE SPECIFIC CARS WITH NO RECALL ON THEM. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE FIX THAT I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR. CODE P200 INTAKE MANIFOLD .. IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT YOU CANNOT CONTROL ITS INITIAL SPEED ...

VEHICLE FAILS TO ACCELERATE OR ACTS AS IF IT IS GOING TO SHUT OFF AND JUST RECENTLY I GOT IN VEHICLE STARTED IT AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHILE STARTING IT FINALLY IT STARTED UP I TOOK IT TO AUTO ZONE TO READ THE CODE. THEY ADVISED ME THE CODE P200A IS VERY COMMON AMONG HYUNDAI AND IT MOST LIKE IS THE VCMA THAT NEEDS REPLACEMENT. AFTER DOING FURTHER RESEARCH THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE VCMA FAILING AND HAVING TO BE REPLACED. MY WARRANTY IS UP ON MY VEHICLE AND I FEEL THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HYUNDAI NEEDS TO ADDRESS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE GIVEN THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND COULD CAUSE HARM TO DRIVER OR OTHERS WHILE DRIVING THAT VEHICLE. ALSO WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE AND THE VEHICLE FAILS TO DO SO THERE IS A RATTLING NOISE WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PETAL.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata with a panoramic sunroof. The sunroof has a collapsible wind deflector that pop up when the sunroof is open. If the wind deflector becomes partially dismounted while the sunroof is open, it can interfere with the closing sunroof panel. The loose deflector can actually dislodge the sunroof panel from its track (imagine a crowbar prying a board loose for the general effect), at which point the force of the passing wind can lift it away from the assembly. Attempts to manually force the sunroof closed around the detached deflector element can cause similar problems. The wind defector was fixed twice by a Hyundai dealer and has separated a third time. Hyundai won’t fix the separated wind deflector because the warranty and repair warranty have expired. Even if fixed a third time the fix is unlikely to last making the situation unpredictable and dangerous for me and subsequent owners. Hyundai recall bulletin Date: December 08, 2016 Attn: Dealer Principal/General Manager/Service Manager/Parts Manager 16-01-067 The sunroof assembly incorporates a wind deflector to help reduce wind noise in the passenger compartment when the sunroof is open. If the wind deflector becomes partially detached from its mounting bracket while the sunroof is open, the deflector can interfere with the closing of the moveable sunroof panel. In some cases this interference can result in the sunroof panel detaching from its mounting tabs.

The recall for the moonroof wind deflector plate was done. However, with their remedy just being super glue it didn't hold up. Last year I had contacted Long Hyundai, dealership I bought the car from and the dealership I did the recall through and when I arrived they told me I was SOL. Hyundai America said the same thing. I've tried remedying this recall and my partner has witnessed the potential hazard given the plate detaching and the sunroof being left slightly ajar when closed. Three times this deflector plate has came detached and three times it almost caused an accident given the scare.

I have had NO previous issues with my sunroof. On Thursday, March 31st at approximately 5:30 pm, as I drove home from work. There was a breezing sound immediately after which my sunroof was pulled from the vehicle. Projected about 30 feet in the air according to the witness and crashed in the middle of the road. Fortunately, there was no one hurt or injured. I was shocked and a bit shaken up. I pulled over got out of the car and recover the frame of the apparatus. The front deflector appeared unattached and I had to hold it down to keep from flapping to bring the car home. After some research as to how this major and possibly like-threatening incident could have occurred. I found numerous articles regarding the deflector unbonding and cause tracking issues with sunroof and disengagement. This is highly concerning and I believe Hyundai should be responsible for the repairs in full as this is a safety concern that is the result of defect.

Background Info : On November 28th, 2023 I filed a case with Hyundai Consumer Affairs due to smoke and sparks coming from my 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA engine. I was assigned to a Case Coordinator Carla who did not provide her last name at telephone 714-694-4963. She was my contact person for the repair. I signed a tow authorization on November 28th , 2023 authorizing HMA to tow the vehicle to the nearest Hyundai dealership due to some delays in coordination on behalf on my contact Carla and the dealership Pohanka Hyundai received my vehicle on approximately December 4th, 2023. Per correspondence from Carla she had contacted the dealership with no response until the 18th of December 2023; approximately two weeks after the dealership received my vehicle. She informed me that she had made countless attempts to reach a service team member for follow up on an inspection. On December 18th 2023 I got in contact with Joseph to inquire as to what his inspection found. He stated “That he did not see an oil leak and the car hand no oil.” I explained to him that was my car had been recently serviced at Jiffy Lube on August 1st 2023 at 44,664 miles for an oil change. Per Hyundai the oil should be changed every 3,000 to 5000 miles which I had not exceeded as my car had 46863 miles at the initial time of the service inspection that he performed. He then said “Jiffy lube did not put any oil in the car then” which was impossible. I made contact with the Jiffy Lube location who performed the oil change to get the record of my last oil change as Joseph had a differing opinion. I was informed that in fact the oil was changed and they could provide video proof if necessary. I then communicated this information to Joseph as well as provided a copy of the last oil change. I then was told that I needed a CVVT replacement, transmission flush and oil change. I attempted to address his initial diagnose of “no oil in the car” as I had proof that it had been changed and that they should do furthe

I keep having the same issue with this vehicle's fuel/propulsion system, power train, engine, cruise control. This vehicle is need it's fuel system cleaned now for a 3rd time in less then 2 years. I have done the high mileage maintenance on it as well. I drive the vehicle less than 5,000 miles a year. When I am driving the vehicle, it struggles to speed up, making me press on the gas repeatedly to get to the indicated speed limit. The vehicle does not slow down as it should when pressing on the brakes. I have to press repeatedly over and over and harder on the brakes in order for it to slow down. The vehicle jerks, speeds up without me pressing on the gas and sometimes it will not stop when prompted. I cannot put this vehicle on cruise control, because it speeds up and out of no where, it accelerates causing me to almost collide with another vehicle or object. Even when the vehicle is not in cruise control, the sudden jerks and acceleration puts me, my children and others in harm when it suddenly speeds up, jerks or will not stop in time. It makes a loud noise and jerks even when the car is in a resting position. It loses power, it speeds up when i need it to stay the same speed or slow down. I fear this vehicle is unsafe. I have reported these issues and a few more to the dealership who never responded, so I had to go over their heads, then finally I got a response from their Consumer Affairs' Department, as well as the BBB and they state because of the vehicle's age and/or mileage there is nothing they can do about it. Please help me. This is the only vehicle I have, and I am a single parent who cannot afford another vehicle. What is going on with this car? Why do I have to keep struggling to pay for something to get fixed and it is still not solved. Below, it ask for a date, but it is multiple dates, not just one. I have listed the first time it occurred. Thank you.

WHEN ACCELERATING THERE IS A TICKING NOISE COMING FROM ENGINE. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A WHILE AFTER I GOT THE UPDATE AND NEW WIRING HARNESS FROM THE CAMPAIGN. I'M SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR, I ACCELERATE SLOWLY BECAUSE I GET NERVOUS IT WILL BLOW UP. I TOOK THIS CAR TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND THEY QUOTED ME OVER 500 DOLLARS FOR THIS REPAIR AND IT MIGHT NOT EVEN FIX IT.

CAR RUNS OUT OF OIL WELL BEFORE 2000 MILES/2 MONTHS. WHEN ACCELERATING THE CAR IS SLUGGISH THE ENGINE IS TICKING AND FEELS LIKE THE ENGINE IS GOING TO SEIZE, NO MATTER IF THE CAR IS MOVING 5MPH OR 70 MPH.
Nov 10, 2020
AFTER A PERIOD OF DRIVING, WHICH IS RANDOM AT BEST, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL APPEAR AND THE VEHICLE WILL START TO SHUDDER AND LOSE ITS ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND HAPPENS BOTH ON THE FREEWAY AT HIGH SPEEDS, AS WELL AS ON CITY STREETS IN LOW SPEEDS. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THIS TO STOP IS TRY AND GET TO A SAFE SPACE OF THE ROAD AND TURN OFF THE VEHICLE. IT IS VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FREEWAY TRAFFIC AND IN MOUNTAIN PASSES AS YOU LOSE THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN SPEED IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THIS COULD VERY EASILY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON 7 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS OVER THE PAST 2 MONTHS AT RANDOM TIMES.

The problem with my vehicle is a failure of internal engine components, specifically a known defect in the piston rings of the Hyundai Theta II engine. This failure causes excessive oil consumption, which is burned internally. The internal engine components have failed, leading to a widely documented defect in the Hyundai Theta II engine. The primary symptom, which began to get serious around 80,000 miles, is the constant need to add oil to the engine every two weeks. If I do not do this, the low oil warning light illuminates on the dashboard, serving as a continuous alert of the problem. This failure was officially confirmed by an authorized Hyundai dealership. About two weeks ago, they first documented that there were no external leaks on the vehicle. When I returned because the oil had been consumed again, they performed a new diagnostic, for which I paid over $300, that confirmed the engine is burning oil internally. The dealership, acting as the manufacturer's representative, is the only entity that has formally inspected the vehicle. The situation places my safety and the safety of others at serious risk. First, the oil consumption can lead to a sudden and catastrophic engine failure, resulting in a loss of power and control of the vehicle while in transit. More alarmingly, the guidance I received from Hyundai staff was to simply "wait for the engine to stop working or start making a lot of noise." As someone who depends on the car for a daily commute, following this dangerous recommendation is an unacceptable risk.

2016 Hyundai Sonata (not part of any recall) driven short distance on expressway had "check engine light" come on. Pulled off of expressway and checked under hood...No visible issues. Chose to return home via side streets as car was riding rough and having problems with acceleration at that point. Short while later, heard loud noise and saw smoke coming from under hood. Pulled to the side of the road and exited car. Was told by bystander that car was on fire. Called Fire Dept, by the time of their arrival, entire front end ablaze, tires and body melted. Thankfully, fire extinguished before any explosion or damage to neighbor's property occurred. Vehicle was a total loss.

My oil seems to be consumed really quickly! I get a full synthetic oil change and then my engine sounds strange and check the oil and there's no more oil in there! This is after less than 1,000 miles after the oil change! It's very expensive that every few months I need to go and get a new oil change, it's supposed to be every 6 months or after 5,000-7,500 miles with full synthetic but it only last about 700 miles before it starts to start to disappear! I'm scared it will cause my engine to get ruined and make a fire! This has been going on formore than 2 years now.

After driving for a few minutes with the sunroof open the wind deflector pulled and nearly off the car. This had been repaired previously under a recall and the repair was simply to re-glue the wind deflector back in place. This had clearly been done before as the dried glue was still on it. The back end of the sunroof nearly came off during this ordeal while we were traveling at highway speeds and it could have killed someone. We were able to close the sunroof once we had stopped, however it was very difficult to do so and required four of us, each with tools that I happened to have in the car at the time. Had we not been able to get the sunroof back closed it surely would have been ripped from the car. Another recall needs to be put into place and an improved correction needs to be put into place.

MAY 7, 2021 AROUND 5PM I ENTERED THE HIGHWAY @ DORSET RD AND I-270 DRIVING SOUTH ON I-270 @ 60MPH WHEN THE SUNROOF DEFLECTOR DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE AND STARTED TO BLOW IN THE WIND AND NEXT I HEAR THE SUNROOF GLASS RATTLING AFRAID IT WOULD FLY OF AND HIT A CAR BEHIND ME, I HIT THE CLOSE BUTTON FOR THE ROOF. WHEN I GOT TO MY DESTINATION I OPEN THE ROOF TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, NOTICING THE SUNROOF DEFLECTOR IS NO LONGER ATTACHED TO THE VEHICLE, BUT IS MADE ONTO THE TRACK THAT MOVES WITH THE GLASS PANEL, I HELD THE DEFLECTOR DOWN WITH MY HAND AND TRIED MY BEST TO GET THE GLASS PANELS TO CLOSE FLAT. ON MY DRIVE BACK HOME NOW ALL I CAN HEAR IS THE GLASS PANELS RATTLING CONTINUALLY, THIS IS A SCARY FEELING BEING THE ENTIRE ROOF OF THE VEHICLE IS GLASS AND WHAT IF THE WIND BLOWS THE PANELS OF AND CAUSE SOMEONE BEHIND ME ON THE HIGHWAY TO GET HURT OR IF THE GLASS RATTLING CAUSES IT TO SHATTER AND BREAK ON ME WHILE DRIVING THIS WOULD BE A CONCERN ALSO FOR A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT. WHY WOULD A SMALL DEFLECTOR BE ATTACHED TO THE ACTUAL TRACK AND NOW THIS HAS CAUSED SERIOUS CONCERN FOR THE SUNROOF STRUCTURE OR SHALL I SAY THE ENTIRE ROOF OF THE SONATA. NEVER HAD A SUNROOF CONCERN WITH MY TIBURON SUNROOF, NOW RETHINKING MY LOVE FOR HYUNDAI'S. MILEAGE IS JUST 21 THOUSAND

BEFORE GOING ON VACATION, I TOOK IT TO PANTILI HYUNDAI IN PRINCETON, WV AND THEY DID A COMPUTER UPDATE AND TOLD ME IT WAS FINE. I DROVE TO MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE AND IT STARTED DOING IT AGAIN. ON MY WAY HOME, WE STOPPED IN CHATTANOOGA FOR LUNCH. WHEN CROSSING A BUSY INTERSECTION, IT NEARLY STOPPED. A GAS TRUCK WAS APPROACHING AS WE BARELY MADE IT ACROSS TO OUR SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS SHOULDER ROOM TO MOVE TO UNTIL IT DECIDED TO GO AGAIN.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
3 complaints
The fuel pump where the fuel line connects to it is cracked and squirting fuel all over that area. Some time ago I started smelling fuel when getting close to the vehicle or when opening windows. Took it to a shop to have it checked out and the technician couldn’t find the problem, since there is no check engine light on or any type of warning. A few days ago I decided to check the bottom part of the fuel tank and noticed that there were traces of leaking fluid. Reached to it and checked it closely and certainly was fuel dripping. Checked the top of the tank where the fuel pump is and found out that the problem was there. Did some research online and found out that that’s a very common fail. I Would like to have it investigated and recall all those failing cars for my safety, my family’s safety and everyone else that trusted this company and is letting us down. First time I noticed this was back in 2022 and is when I took it to the shop.

Hyundai Motor America (HMA) denied my engine replacement claim (PA# [XXX]) under their extended warranty program, specifically campaign TXXI. This claim involves my 2016 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.4 , VIN # [XXX] , which exhibits all the symptoms and engine damage outlined in the campaign, yet my request for a free engine replacement has been unjustly denied. Campaign TXXI, as explained in the Technical Service Bulletin issued by Hyundai, extends the engine warranty applicable to 2015-2019 model year Sonata (LF) vehicles equipped with Theta II 2.0L Turbo and 2.4L GDI engines. This warranty covers engine long block repair or replacement due to engine damage or malfunction from connecting rod bearing wear and extends to a Limited Lifetime Warranty, valid for both original and subsequent owners. o On or about [XXX], my vehicle exhibited a blinking check engine light on the dash, entered into limp mode, and a knocking noise was coming from the engine. o As I was driving the vehicle to the Hyundai of North Miami Service Center on [XXX] (21400 NW 2nd av., Miami, FL 33169) for inspection, the engine locked up and stop, necessitating a call to a towing truck company to complete the trip. o Upon inspection, the service center identified significant engine damage, including, engine mechanical failure unable to turn on, and recommended that the vehicle require a new engine replacement. o These findings align with the engine damage described under campaign TXXI. o Despite meeting the campaign criteria, HMA denied my claim (PA#XXX) for an engine replacement on 11/22/2024. o HMA based its denial to my claim on the review of engine pictures and my inability to provide evidence supporting oil maintenance intervals between 35k- 68k miles, 78k-99k miles, and 142k-163k miles. HMA cited these maintenance gaps as the basis for suspecting engine neglect, some indications of sludge found on the engine, as the reason for the engine failure and subsequent locking. I MADE IT TO THE NEAREST NEIGHBORHOOD BY MY HOME STOPPED FOR IT TO COOL DOWN FOR 10 MINUTES I START MY CAR BACK UP & IT WAS PERFECTLY FINE BY TIME I MADE IT TO A STOP SIGN IT CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE I WAS IN THE CAR. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME IT WAS DUE TO AN ELECTRIC/ENGINE PROBLEM & NOTHING WAS MY FAULT. I DON'T HAVE INSURANCE TO COVER IT. THE NEXT MORNING I FOUND OUT ON THE INTERNET THAT ALL HYUNDAI'S AND KIAS HAVE A RE CALL ON CARS DUE TO ENGINE FIRE RISK. My vehicle is experiencing high oil consumption. An oil light came on for about a second and went out. When I returned home, I checked the oil, and it was empty. We have our oil changed at our dealership everyou 3000-3500 miles. The next time frame, I checked the oil regularly and noticed it was getting low very quickly. When we returned to the dealership we were put on a 1000 mile oil consumption test, then the next time had a combustion chamber cleanse, and then returned at another 1000 miles and the dealership disputed the amount of used oil, and told us if there were additional issues we would need to start over. It continues to burn unusually high, but we are monitoring it. Hyundai says their threshold is a quart every 1000 miles.

I am reporting multiple safety-related problems with my 2016 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0 that have become progressively worse and may pose a serious danger. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) warning light starts blinking during startup, then remains solidly illuminated while driving. This indicates a persistent fault in the stability system. The car also frequently slows down or brakes on its own, without any input from me. This happens especially right after starting the car or while driving in traffic, and has caused multiple near-accidents. These issues first appeared around two years ago, but they used to happen occasionally. Over time, they have become more frequent, and now they occur daily. There is also a grinding or dragging noise when the vehicle starts or moves at low speed, and it often hesitates when trying to accelerate. These symptoms create uncertainty and make the vehicle feel unsafe to operate. Inside the car, the dashboard has severely cracked, with deep, wide splits across the top panel. I’m concerned this could interfere with airbag deployment or reflect light dangerously while driving. On the outside, the paint is peeling off in large chunks, and I’ve noticed the same problem on other Sonatas of this model. This suggests a wider manufacturing issue and raises concerns about long-term durability and corrosion. These problems have not been confirmed by a mechanic yet, but they are consistent, worsening, and clearly pose a safety risk. I have recorded a video that shows the ESC warning and the sound it makes, which I am including for reference. I am reporting multiple serious issues with my 2016 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0, which has only 30,000 miles. Despite the low mileage, the vehicle is experiencing major safety and quality problems. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light stays on constantly, indicating a system failure. On startup, the car sometimes applies the brakes by itself, and there’s a loud noise like something is stuck or grinding. The traction control light also comes on during this. While driving, the car will suddenly slow down on its own, even when I’m not braking. When I press the gas pedal, it barely responds or takes too long to accelerate. Sometimes, this happens at the same time as the ESC warning, which feels extremely unsafe — especially on highways or in traffic. The push-to-start button often delays before the engine turns over, which is abnormal. The A/C system only blows warm air, regardless of temperature settings, and no cold air comes out. I also have a serious issue with the paint peeling off in large chunks from the body of the car. It’s happening despite proper care, and I’ve seen other Hyundai Sonatas of the same year with the same issue, which suggests a widespread paint defect. These issues have not yet been diagnosed by a dealership, but given the low mileage and frequency, I believe this model may have serious defects in safety systems and paint quality. I’m very concerned for my safety and request a full investigation.

While driving, the vehicle's engine light will randomly turn on and when it does, the car will lose power; meaning, when this occurs, and I press the accelerator pedal, it does not put out the normal, expected amount of acceleration. This problem will persist until I pull over, turn off the vehicle, and turn it back on. However, this does not always fix the issue. Sometimes, when I turn the car off and turn it back on, the check engine light will still be on and I will still encounter the issue. When I brought my vehicle into my local Hyundai dealership, they had the car for 3 days, and when I called to ask what was wrong with it or what they did to fix it, they told me they could not recreate the problem and therefore, did not do anything to the vehicle. So now, I'm at an impasse where this problem is not able to be recreated, thus, unable to get it fixed, but I don't feel completely safe to drive long distances. I also own a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that experienced the same type of issue, and that engine was recalled.

My engine block or engine has a hole in it. All of my oil came out and my vehicle shut off. My brakes as well is not hard when pressed on, so I would have to pump it till it hardened. My safety and others safety was at risk while I was driving because my vehicle was not coming to a complete stop which could have resulted in a serious or fatal accident. As well as my engine block blowing making all the oil in my vehicle leak all on the road while driving on a busy road. Yes the problem has been confirmed BUT I was told that my car does not fall under the cars listed with the SAME issue on the recall list. No it has not been inspected by the manufacturer or police or insurance rep because I am being told I have to pay out of pocket and I am not able to afford the prices being told to me for an issue that I have not caused. There were no warning lamps or anything prior to this incident. I have went to many different mechanics for a diagnostic for my vehicle but they all say my vehicle is fine or they do not know what I am talking about.

My car experiences issues around acceleration. It often feels like it gets “stuck” or hesitates when I try to accelerate from a stop (ex. a stoplight) or low speed or when I try to merge onto the highway. At times I have not been able to merge onto the highway at a safe speed because my acceleration gets stuck/lags at a low mph (ex. 35 mph onto a 70 mph highway). My car also excessively consumes oil. I started noticing the excessive oil consumption around 115K miles. My oil lamp does not illuminate when low on oil in nearly all cases I have been low on oil. It has only come on once (did not remain on) and oil was not present on the dipstick. I am 687 miles into my current 1,000-mile oil consumption test and have had to top off my oil twice. I started the test because my oil light flashed and oil was not present on the dipstick. The engine light came on 312 miles into the consumption test. I got a diagnostic code from AutoZone and relayed the diagnostic code to the dealership. The dealership said the code was related to low oil and to fill up with oil and bring the car to the dealership. I filled it with oil and drove the car to Luke’s Auto for an independent inspection. Their inspection found that the check engine light was from a failed e-cvvt and additional wear was present. I asked if this could be caused by oil consumption issues and they confirmed the possibility. Just over 300 miles from that incident, I checked my oil and it was once again low. I am deeply concerned about the safety of my vehicle due to it's stalling and indicators of potentially seizing. I have had near collisions on the highway due to my vehicle getting "stuck" while accelerating and unable to enter the highway at a safe speed. I am concerned about the consequences of lack of oil and failure of my oil lamp to illuminate to indicate no oil such as my engine seizing or catching fire. I have reported these concerns to the dealership since 1/2/23 and have reported my concerns to HMA.

The blind spot detection system needs alignment. When the blind spot detection fails it disables traction control and anti-lock brakes. The parking sensor and backup sensors should have nothing to do with the antilogue brakes or traction control. Since these items are disabled traction does not exist and anti-lock brakes are ineffective.

I am writing to bring to your attention a critical issue affecting my 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA 4 DOOR SEDAN, that warrants investigation and public awareness. Hyundai cars are currently plagued by ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEMS that ultimately lead to ENGINE FAILURE, due to there being NO WARNING LAMPS, MESSAGES, or OTHER SYMPTOMS OF THE PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. This is a concerning issue that remains largely unknown to most customers. When these issues arise, car owners such as myself, are often left with uncooperative dealerships that either deny the problem or offer minimal assistance. Even Hyundai corporate and extended warranties fail to provide adequate support, frequently citing owner negligence as a reason for denial. This occurs despite the fact that engine sludge buildup is inevitable, even with consistent car maintenance. Furthermore, I am forced to endure long waiting times for MY 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA 4 DOOR SEDAN, THAT HAS BEEN INSPECTED and, then DENIED FOR an ENGINE REPLACEMENT, and face additional months of delay for them to explain why. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of loaner vehicles and no assurance of rental reimbursement. This leaves countless individuals burdened with repair payments for stranded vehicles. My personal experience has been with Ourisman Hyundai, and many others have voiced similar grievances. Numerous complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA), yet little action has been taken to aid the thousands of people who are experiencing the same problems to rectify this issue. It is imperative that ATTENTION is drawn to this matter as HYUNDAI'S approach to selling cars with HIDDEN ENGINE ISSUES PUTS CUSTOMERS AT SAFETY RISK AND places them in DIRE and DEADLY HARM. I implore all News Media outlets to conduct an investigation into these concerns and help shed light on a situation that demands immediate attention

found me driving on I 75 and I put the Cruise Control at 70 miles, instead of maintaining the speed at 70miles the vehicle accelerated to more than 90 miles per hour I had to quickly put my foot on the brake otherwise I could have an accident with the vehicle from the front, after all this happened, I felt the car was losing speed, I tried to accelerate but it did not go over 60 miles per hour. I took it to the mechanic and they did not detect anything in the vehicle's computer. This vehicle also turns off at times when you are driving and it turns off it also spend too much oil motor , I started looking for information on this model of car and I see that there are more than 550 people who have the same problem as me, this is an unsafe vehicle for the road

I am having electrical issues with my 2016 Hyundai Sonata plus the other recalls. It started as issues with the lights on the driver side. I have replaced several bulbs and the entire light even and still have issues with the lights working properly. Now the issue is the battery, alternator or the starter. The starter had to be replaced as I was advised by Hyundai dealership when my engine had to be replaced, per recall. I had to purchase a starter, that was three times the amount at the dealership because the one that is manufactured in the auto stores is not correct, so it should not be the starter as it is only 1 to 2 years old. I have had the alternator replaced as well as 2 batteries and I’m still having issues. It cut off completely while driving on more than 1 occasion. There was no warning, no power steering, gear lock, no lights & no power so I could not move and almost had a major accident. It is definitely a safety hazard even after the repairs, it has happened again! My vehicle is currently not working because the new battery will not hold a charge and they both have been replaced. I’ve been having other electronic type issues with this vehicle. My information center has not worked for the past 8 months or so! I reported this to Hyundai and they agreed that it could be a part of a previous recall, and advised me to go to the dealership to have it repaired. The dealership refuses because they don’t have required information to show it as a Current recall and want to charge me half the price of a new car to repair. I am not the only one experience this as my research has led me to several other Hyundai owners experiencing the same issues. It is not fair that they cannot be corrected as these are things that are none of consumer fault & should have been high demands to proper repair or recall being a major safety issue as it can cause a horrific accident! Shame on Hyundai for putting their Hyundai customers at risk & through so much chaos!

My husband (Scott) was driving the car on Florida highway 408 eastbound approaching the exit 21 on 10/12/2023 around 8 am. Scott heard something pop suddenly and saw fire shooting out from both sides of the car in the rearview mirrors. Upon noticing the fire, he tried to slow down to pull over the car, but brakes failed (went to the floor). A police officer on the road happened to see the fire so he drove next to my husband's car and Scott yelled at officer that he had no brakes. The officer went ahead of Scott to help Scott's car slow down. When approaching uphill slopes by the exit, Scott was finally able to use the emergency brakes to come to a complete stop. The fire engine came right away and put out the fire which took over 20 minutes. My husband is handicapped and him walking away from such car catastrophic fire unharmed was near miracle. Two weeks before the fire, I happened to take the car in for checkup at Greenway Hyundai Orlando and the 2.5 hour inspection found nothing wrong with my car. I wanted my car checked because my car stalled briefly pulling out of a parking space a few days earlier.

Bought the car on 08/20/2022. On 09/07/2022 we took the car back to Allen Turner because the engine light was flashing and the car would not go over a certain speed. There were metal shavings in the oil. It was throwing code P1326. They did an update on car and told me the cylinder walls were scored but the motor had a lifetime warranty no matter what happened to it. Every time we would have the oil changed, we would have to add 3 quarts of oil every 10-15 days. The vehicle stalled out at a very busy intersection nearly causing a wreck with my teenage daughter driving. Had it towed to dealership and they said it needed a new motor because it has one of the defective motors in it according to the VIN. Then they told me it was oil consumption and they could replace spark plugs and oil and it would be drivable but it would stall, it would break down and the motor will seize. It is only a matter of time. Hyundai will not honor the warranty on it because the motor is not seized up. The service manager told me to drive it until it seizes and then they would cover the engine replacement. The vehicle is not safe to operate. It is a safety hazard for anyone to drive. Hyundai will not stand behind their products when they already know it is defective.

This vehicle had a complete engine failure. Since it is a hybrid, when the engine shut down, the vehicle lost all power. The driver had no control over steering or brakes. The vehicle crashed through three trees and into a house. Hyundai Motors of America and NHTSA are aware of the issues with this vehicle's engine, however, this engine was already replaced. The problem was that the "limp mode" did not enact in this specific car. I brought this to Hyundai's attention at least 20 times and expressed my concern about the threat this vehicle posed to me and anyone else on the road, yet they continued to ignore me or attempt to rectify the issue. This vehicle was part of the class action lawsuit. I was told, after the seventh time the vehicle broke down (fourth time after engine replacement) that Hyundai would buy back the vehicle. That never happened. The vehicle shut down without "limp/safe mode", with an entire loss of power eight times and was brought into the dealership. Hyundai refused to help me. I knew it would end in disaster, and it did. I'm sure my vehicle is not the only one that does not have a safe mode taking effect when the power shuts off and there is no steering or brakes at 70 mph. I am using the date for the last time the vehicle shut off and the driver lost control and hit a house. However, there are eight other times this happened. I have more information and documentation if needed. I'm attaching my first claim, documents collected after that claim, the accident report (did not have photos attached, the photos are from the scene when I went there the next day), and all email conversations with Hyundai since the first engine failure. My big concern here is that even though Hyundai did try to repair the recall issues, they ignored everything else. I told them over and over that the limp mode did not work. This made it morally impossible for me to sell, even if I wanted to. They refused to help. I worry there may be others out there with this issue.

Hello, I have reached out to Modesto Hyundai and consumer affairs since May of 2022. I have been shunned and told nothing is wrong. The message below was sent last year in May. I was turned away because I could not afford the diagnostic even though it was covered under a past warranty recall. I had to complain. A few months later I came up with the money and was told I was given the wrong information the first time. They kept the car for a week,, drove only 30 miles and said it was the battery. I recently had a oil change done at Hyundai in February 2023. They failed to mention the oil everywhere and said everything was fine. The engine stalls on a daily bases. The 2 prior oil changes one said they thought oil was leaking but didn't know from where the other said something was wrong with the oil pan. Also you can smell gas in the cab and the head and tail lights have been replaced 3x each in the last few months. "I have gotten no where with the Hyundai dealership here in my town. I was told I'd have to pay for a diagnostic to see if something is wrong before the vehicle could be checked to see if the engine is failing. I believe this car is a lemon and has stalled on several occasions. I recently had an oil change and was told their diagnostic came out clear yet the engine still acts up and will stall while driving. Will it take for my car to stall on railroad tracks and be hit by a train and killed before Hyundai fixes the issue? Women and children die in in faulty cars because no one would listen. A mechanic told me his friend had the same exact car down to the year and had the same issues and Hyundai said it was infact a recall and they replaced the vehicle. Did Hyundai make it right because he was a man? Is this something I should just look for an attorney for? Please help as I know something is seriously wrong with this car. I was told that Hyundais are safe cars yet I have never felt more unsafe in a vehicle." Thank you for your time. Hoping for the best.

My car idles very rough at times, and sometimes when idling, it dies out. At times it is difficult to even start as if it's not getting the electrical signal to the engine. Hyundai replaced the fuel pump, but that did not fix the problem, but cost $1,200. No warning messages. Two other automotive companies also did a diagnostic tests, but couldn't find the problem as it seems it has to be tested WHEN IT IS ACTING UP. It died on me far from home a week ago, but eventually restarted. I'm afraid to drive it especially at night as it died when idling at a light and almost didn't restart.

This is causing a safety issue. Brought car to dealer who confirmed that the left headlight was deformed preventing proper projection of the light. This deformity was not covered nor are there any recalls even though numerous people reported the same issue. Am working on privately replacing them both. The second was the return tensioner not properly retracting the seatbelt back in. This was not covered by the dealer but it’sa safety issue where the system may fail.

NOTHING FOUND. I RETURN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP ON OCTOBER 3, 2016 FOR INSPECTION AT THE HYUNDAI GERALD DEALERSHIP IN NORTH AURORA ILLINOIS WHERE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. WHILE DRIVING 65MPH AT 10PM ON A THE INTERSTATE, I HEARD A POUND "THUNK" AND THOUGHT I HAD A TIRE ISSUE, SO BEGAN TO STEER TOWARD THE EMERGENCY LANE. I QUICKLY REALIZED I HAD NO POWER TO ACCELERATE, NO POWER STEERING AND THE DASH WAS BLACKED OUT...CAR WAS DEAD. ONLY EVER THING WORKING WAS RADIO, EMERGENCY FLASHERS AND DOME LIGHT. DOOR LOCKS DID NOT EVEN WORK. CALLED FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND CAR WAS TOWED. I HAVE NO FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE CAR'S DISPOSITION AS IT WAS A RENTAL. IT WAS TERRIFYING AND COULD HAVE ENDED CATASTROPHICALLY IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. THE REASON I AM FILING THIS REPORT IS TO INSURE IT WILL BE INVESTIGATED THOROUGHLY. I DID REPORT IT TO HYUNDAI .

DEER RAN IN FRONT OF MY CAR. AIR BAGS INFLATED AND STAYED SO FOR QUITE A WHILE. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE CAR I NOTICED MY FOOT WAS BURNT WITH SKIN OFF AND LEGS WERE BURNING FROM THE POWDER IN AIR BAGS. I KNOW THE BAGS SHOULD INFLAT BUT THE SMOKE FROM THIS KEPT UP FOR QUITE A WHILE. I DID NOT THINK THIS POWDER SHOULD HAVE KEPT COMING OUT SO MUCH AND SO DID PASSERBY PEOPLE WHO STOPPED TO HELP. WE HAD THE POWDER IN OUR EYES.
