I bought this vehicle as a certified pre-owned from a Hyundai dealership on 09/10/2022 with 32,677 miles. Around 85,000 miles, it began burning an excessive amount of oil—about two quarts per month. Now, with approximately 101,000 miles, it still burns two quarts weekly, oil is being expelled from the muffler, and the exhaust has started to glow red. I have tried contacting Hyundai but have not received any response.

Car started misfiring while driving and engine light came on. It kept losing power but I was able to pull off highway. This put myself and others in danger because speed was significantly reduced suddenly. Dealer said problem was due to oil leaking on spark plugs. The car had been using excessive oil. Dealer said this is known issue but I had to pay for any repairs since I was the second owner. Hyundai still pays for the original owner to get an oil consumption cleaning, but recently stopped paying for secondary owners. If the oil consumption cleaning does not work, then the next step is to replace engine, paid by customer if Hyundai refuses. Mileage on car is 75,769.

My 2018 Hyundai Sonata’s oil light flashed briefly while driving, so I checked the oil level and found the dipstick completely dry. The car has been maintained regularly and was still about 1,000 miles away from its next scheduled oil change. There are no visible leaks, and the engine is not smoking. I had to immediately add oil to prevent engine damage. This appears to be a case of excessive oil consumption, which I have since learned is common in Hyundai Sonatas with this engine. I am very concerned that low oil pressure could cause engine failure or sudden loss of power while driving, creating a serious safety hazard. I request that NHTSA investigate this issue for 2018 Sonatas, as many owners are reporting similar experiences, and Hyundai has issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 23-EM-008H) about excessive oil consumption but no recall.

I bought my daughter this car a little over a year ago to drive to college. A few weeks after we bought the car we noticed the engine oil was low. We began checking it and had to continuously add more oil between oil changes. Now we are having to put 1-1 1/2 quarts of oil in her car every week. It also smokes when it's first crank and when accelerating. I am worried it will break down on her while driving to or from school, or in the middle of an intersection where she could be run over or hurt. We now owe more money than it is supposed to be worth, and we are stuck. When the oil gets low there are no warning lights or anything that comes on to let us know it's low. We have to keep a constant check on it. From what I am seeing online, this is a common problem with the engines in these cars. So many people are having their engines blow, and it also causes the catalytic converters to go out on these cars. We are not the 1st owners, and it is not u Der warranty, so hyundai won't do anything to help us. Even if they did, they are charging people around $1000 to clean the engine and then making people do oil consumption tests where they over fill the oil so that it doesn't run out in the time they make you drive it. This company is not standing behind there cars and they know these engines have problems! The car is available for inspection.

My starter failed after 35,683 miles leaving me stranded in a parking lot at night. The life expectancy for a starter is between 100,000and 150,000 miles. Hyundai replaced the part at a cost of $1,139 which is way above what it normally costs to replace a starter. The starter is at the dealership and is not available for inspection. Being stranded in a parking lot made me very uncomfortable and what if the starter had failed in a bad section of town. The problem was confirmed by a Hyundai dealership who replaced the part after I had my vehicle towed to their service department. The only ones who inspected the vehicle was a mechanic at the dealership. There wer no warning lamps or messages, but I did notice the car did not start on the first try before the starter failed. 07/29/2025

When I bought the car from Mathews in Marion Ohio the car looked like it was already in some form of accident due to a previous owner and I was unaware what caused the accident or any other problems with the vehicle upon buying. I was not presented with a carfax. I have electrical tape at the bottom of my bumper and there’s a problem with acceleration. It accelerates by itself and veers right when I take my hand off the wheel. I’m afraid to drive my car on the highway. I have complained about this problem to Mathews twice. I am now in a loaner until they figure out what’s going on.

I looked up my car on carfax and it shows a 3 different odometer readings. on 10/14/19 it had 15.125 miles. On 03/04/21 it had 61,284 miles. On 02/01/2022 it had 30,371 miles And finally on 3/3/23 it had 38,269 miles. This clearly shows that somewhere along the line, the odometer was changed. My car has been on the shop on several occasions in the less than 2 year time frame

For now the fifth time in the last 16 months the HEV light and engine light has lit up while the car jerks and sputters and dies. Below is the incident report that I filed on or about August 8, 2022. Again at the end of the day yesterday on October 20, 2023 the same issues still arise for the fifth time. See below for a re-cap of the issues I am once again experiencing after Hyundai claims to have fixed the issues: For the fourth time the HEV light (and others) has come on and the dash has lit up while I was driving, with the last three times leaving us stranded in dangerous road situations with little or no power. The light first came on in July 2020 at 40,089 miles. A dealership reset the codes and I had no problems until June 7, 2022 when the lights lit up on the dash again and the car died and I had to have it towed to a local dealership. They could find nothing wrong with it and checked all the wiring and said none of the codes were coming up and that the car ran fine for them when test driving a day or two after I had it towed. So they released the car back to me deeming it good to go. Then only 19 days later on June 26, 2022 the HEV light among other lit up again and the dash indicated to pull over and cut the car off due to the hybrid system. I had it towed to the nearest dealership again. The then looked at it and said they reset all the codes and everything looked to be good to go. Then AGAIN on Aug 8, 2022 (3rd time in two months), we were put in a dangerous situation trying to get the car off a busy highway when the HEV light (and others) again lit up the dash and our power went almost completely out while the engine jerked violently as we tried to avoid being hit by cars while trying to get off the highway before it completely died on us. Four times now Hyundai dealers have shrugged this off saying "we reset the codes" and we can't find an issue. We have been put in dangerous traffic conditions three of these times.

THE HEADLIGHT LOW BEAMS ARE DANGEROUS AND NEED TO BE RECALLED ASAP? After his death, I acquired this vehicle from my father who had stopped driving at night thinking he had developed a vision issue. The first time I drove it at night I discovered the low beams are defective, and that was the problem, not my dear old Dad’s vision. The light emitted does not extend far enough in front of the vehicle to light a large enough safe distance. There are also large black areas at the far edge of each light that float from side to side with the beam while making turns. This also causes the areas on one side or the other to loose lighting. While turning they are often facing the wrong direction making it virtually impossible to see the unlit areas. We live in the country down a 20 mile long two lane road with many turns and minimal lighting compared to city driving. We then turn onto a 3 mile very narrow road with numerous turn, minimal shoulders, and a double hairpin turn with a dip at the end. It required us to leave the high beams on at all times even when other vehicles are approaching because it would be too dangerous to only use the low beams. When I took it to the dealer they ignored the problem. I then insisted they examine them immediately—since that was my #1 PRIORITY when I dropped it off for inspection during a regular service. Their conclusion was that there was nothing they could do to fix it. THAT IS AN UNACCEPTABLE RESPONSE! THOSE LOW BEAM LIGHTS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. My research has found that this has been an issue since the vehicle was first made and when purchased by my dear old Dad, his only way of dealing with it was to stop driving at night.

HEADLIGHT LENS HAS A PROJECTION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LENS THAT INTERFERES WITH AND IS VERY DISTRACTING TO THE LIGHTED FIELD OF VISION. HYUNDAI MECHANICS HAVE TIOLD ME THEY'VE GOTTEN MANY COMPLAINTS FROM DRIVERS, BUT HYUNDAI REFUSES TO CORRECT IT. I FILED A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI, AND THEY GAVE A VERY DUBIOUS AND WEAK EXCUSE FOR THE DEFECT. THEY RESPONDED IN WRITING TO ME "THE BLACK HALF-MOON TRIANGULAR IMAGE IS DESIGNED TO PREVENT GLARE TO THE VEHICLE TRAVELING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA IS UNABLE TO REPLACE THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY FOR CONCERNS RELATED TO THE HALF-MOON/TRIANGULAR SHADOW." THIS RESPONSE DEFIES LOGIC AND IT APPEARS TO BE AN AFTER THE FACT FABRICATED RESPONSE SO THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO CORRECT THE DESIGN FLAW. THIS FLAW IS OBVIOUSLY ONLY OBSERVABLE DURING NIGHT DRIVING.

DIM HEADLIGHTS ARE VERY WEAK, NOT AIMED CORRECTLY OR POOR DESIGN. NOT ENOUGH CANDLE POWER TO SEE DIVIDING LINES ON HIGHWAY. WITH BRIGHT LIGHTS THINGS ARE GOOD. I HAVE TALKED WITH 3 OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE SONATA'S, DIFFERENT YEAR MODELS, THEY HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT. NOT SAFE! I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW THIS HIGH SAFETY ITEM PASSED THE NTSB!!!!

I HAVE A 2018 HYUNDAI SONATA. I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE BECAUSE MY HEADLIGHTS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE PARTIALLY SHADED AND EACH LIGHT HAS A NOTCH HANGING DOWN OVER IT. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THE LIGHTS HAVE AN ANTI GLARE SYSTEM AND THAT'S HOW THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK! THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS FEATURE. WHEN I DRIVE AT NIGHT ON A DARK ROAD I CAN SEE ABOUT 15 - 2 FEET IN FRONT OF ME. THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. PLEASE DO SOMETHING.

I first noticed that my vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of motor oil, with the oil change light coming on every 1,500–2,000 miles. I routinely had to add oil between changes to keep it running. On May 30th, while driving on surface roads, I heard clanking noises from the engine. When accelerating, the vehicle clanked heavily, and then went into “limp mode,” limiting acceleration to about 10 MPH before struggling up to 30 MPH. I added oil, but a local shop diagnosed it with code P1326 (knock sensor) and advised that Hyundai engines are prone to failure around 100,000 miles and that I should take it to the dealer for warranty evaluation. I contacted Graham Hyundai, who told me they could not see the vehicle until July 1st and that I would be responsible for towing. I dropped the vehicle off on July 1st, but it was not inspected until July 8th or 9th. I was later told Hyundai was being consulted. Around July 15th–16th, the dealership informed me that I would need $1,500 in repairs. They stated the engine had passed the Hyundai Bearing Clearance Test (a $350 charge) and that Hyundai required me to pay for an ECU “KSD logic” upgrade ($175). They also stated the engine valve cover was leaking, requiring new spark plugs, for a total of $532. Additional charges included an oil change and other shop fees and taxes. After repairs, I was instructed to drive 1,000 miles and then return for an oil consumption test. After approximately 1,000 miles and four weeks, the dipstick check showed the vehicle had consumed nearly all of its oil. I was then told I now need a combustion chamber cleaning, costing approximately $850 and requiring three days in the shop. Given the oil consumption issues, repeated engine warnings, limp mode incident, and the significant costs already incurred for testing and required upgrades, I am requesting that my engine be replaced under warranty and that all fees I have already paid be reimbursed. Rather than keep paying for work.

Aug 03, 2025
The electrical and engines in these cars are horrible . The steering wheel keeps locking up while driving cause everything to flick inside the car . This is a major safety issue for me when I am driving and I am unable to control the steering wheel. Dealership claimed they don’t see the issue with the car which I am stating . The vehicle was only inspected by a mechanic and since Hyundai said they couldn’t find anything a 3rd party confirmed that this was a ongoing issue and dealership could’ve caught it but it’s cheaper the sell the car . No everything happens at once especially if I’m turning or driving under 40 mph. First appeared 15 days after I bought the vehicle I alerted the dealership immediately

Car continues to burn oil within a week of getting oil changes, the oil will be black and it will be low sometimes there will be no oil and there is not an oil leak. Right now we had to pay for a combustion test and have to drive 1,000 miles then check the oil at Hyundai again and already our oil is starting to burn and is low. Hyundai said if the combustion test comes back still burnt or low Hyundai would give me a new engine and yea it’s low and already a tint dark not as dark as it used to get but still it’s low with no leak and we did not get the promised new engine after paying almost 600$ for the test… Also electrical wise the computer randomly sounds like static when Siri talks also the music does not play and randomly the maps will close out we have tried new cords we have tried everything and it still happens.

Aug 17, 2025
I am writing to file a formal complaint against Hyundai Motor America regarding a significant defect in the paint quality of my 2018 Hyundai vehicle and the company's lack of response to my attempts to resolve this issue.I am the owner of a 2018 Hyundai [Model], which I purchased from priority Hyundai in dec 2017. Over the past few months, the paint on my white Hyundai has started to peel significantly, despite regular maintenance and care. This issue has not only affected the aesthetic appeal of my vehicle but also its potential resale value. I first reported this issue to have subsequently made multiple attempts to contact Hyundai’s customer service department directly. Despite these efforts, I have received no response or acknowledgment from Hyundai regarding my concerns. This lack of communication and failure to address the defect is unacceptable and does not align with the standards expected from a reputable automobile manufacturer. The paint peeling problem is not an isolated incident, as many other owners of 2018 Hyundai white vehicles have reported similar issues. This suggests a potential defect in the paint application process or materials used, which should be addressed under the vehicle’s warranty or through a manufacturer recall. My specific complaints are as follows: 1. Hyundai has failed to acknowledge or respond to my multiple attempts to contact them about the paint peeling issue. 2. Hyundai has not offered any solution or repair for the defective paint, which is clearly a manufacturing issue. 3. The lack of customer service and support from Hyundai in handling this complaint is highly disappointing. 1. Acknowledge receipt of my complaint and provide an explanation for the delay in response. 2. Arrange for an inspection of my vehicle and offer a comprehensive solution to the paint peeling issue, which may include repainting the affected areas or other appropriate measures. 3. Improve their customer service procedures to ensure that such complaints

Jan 21, 2023
White paint has started to peel off the body. Vehicle is past warranty (>3 years, >36,000 miles) and Hyundai refused to deal with it. It has been a known problem that their pearl white paint easily peels off the body down to the steel but they refuse to issue a recall for it.

The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the engine oil warning light illuminated intermittently. The contact pulled over to check the engine oil level and discovered that there was no oil in the engine. The vehicle was taken to Midas, and engine oil was added. The vehicle was later taken to another Midas, who found a crack in the engine oil pan. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that Midas had overtightened the oil pan during an oil change, so the warranty to repair the vehicle would not be honored. The vehicle was taken back to Midas, and the engine oil pan was replaced. The contact stated that he was currently in litigation with the dealer and the manufacturer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000. The VIN was unavailable.

Oil consumption was ridiculously high, changing oil/topping off oil constantly. Car would not accelerate over 30 mph without sputtering and rumbling. I had mechanic diagnose bad sparks plugs due to sitting in oil from leaking. After I had them repaired/replaced the car drove great for 1 day, then decided to die in the middle of a busy intersection while I had my teenage son in the car with me. My son and I had to PUSH it out of the busy intersection onto a side street to get out of the way! I had it towed to Hyundai dealer who said the spark plugs were bad and that the fuel pressure sensor and gdi pump were faulty and needed replacement. Left front lower control arm/ball joint assembly also requires fix. To the tune of $3000 + . It’s been at dealer for past few months until I can afford the repairs including the 2nd diagnostic and tow it took to get it to dealership.

I own a 2018 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 turbo I paid cash for it in [XXX] with 2011 miles on it for 24,000 cash didn’t start having problems until 2022 then the I kept hearing a knocking on the left front wheel. I had it look at several places because the Hyundai of Louisville dealership kept telling me my title was branded I didn’t know what that meant till I took my title to the tag office and had the sheriffs department check the title out and it was an still is 100 % clean then my engine kept getting worse an in may of 2023 the engine stopped working I had the car towed to the local dealership and they couldn’t even look at it till Aug of 2023 the they told me I shot out a code 99 and they refused to update my software for the knock sensor system and wouldn’t honor the regular 60,000 miles warranty my car only had 48,000 miles on it . They didn’t bother telling me about the faulty GDI 2.0 turbo engine in August of 2023 I had to research it and find out on the internet that it’s a excessive oil consumption problem with this faulty engine. I had my car stolen for 6 days in April of 2023 and everything was taken out of my glove box an trunk . My oil change receipts were kept in an envelope in the glove box and were stolen with all my car registration an insurance papers . So the dealership refused my free engine replacement because I don’t have all my oil change receipts and blamed me for the oil being out of the engine which is due to the faulty GDI 2.0 turbo engine the dealership has now had my car 300 days I’ve been walking to and from my work I can’t afford a new engine all I want is me free engine replacement I have all the articles printed of all the engine problem with the cars catching on fire or just stop running period . I need some representation on having the Hyundai of Louisville Kentucky on Dixie highway to get me my free engine replacement they want 14,000$ for a new engine. ⸻ In early 2024, I brought my vehicle to a Hyundai dealership due to rapid oil loss. I reported having to refill the oil weekly and suspected a leak. They diagnosed a cracked oil pan, claimed to fix it, and returned the car. However, immediately after, the car continued burning oil at an alarming rate. I was forced to buy and add oil every single week, spending hundreds of dollars to maintain drivability. Shortly after the repair, I began experiencing erratic dashboard warnings. The check engine light would frequently come on and off. The oil lamp illuminated every few days. These symptoms were persistent, not isolated incidents. Despite reporting the issue again, I was told the oil burning was “normal” for Hyundai engines and nothing to worry about. That response put my safety and my child’s safety at risk, as I was unknowingly driving a vehicle with worsening engine damage. Eventually, the car stopped running entirely. It was no longer drivable or safe. I took it to a licensed independent mechanic who confirmed there were multiple ongoing oil leaks and extensive engine damage. The issues I originally reported were never properly fixed, and it’s now clear the dealership failed to address the root cause of the oil consumption problem. I also noticed unusual spikes in the odometer after their repair, despite working from home and barely driving. This added further concern that the vehicle’s internal systems may have been compromised or malfunctioning. I believe Hyundai’s failure to act on clear warning signs directly led to this total engine failure and a serious safety risk.

This vehicle consumes one quart of oil every 1000 miles. I have documentation to prove it. Hyundai has done their own asessments and claimed that it consumes less. There was a class action lawsuit filed in California for this issue.

When driving the car on the highway - "check engine - hybrid system" warning lights come on and indicate hybrid system issue and to shut car off immediately. Extreme safety issue as the car goes from highway speeds to 35MPH almost instantly. This has happened seven times now and Hyundai keeps indicating that technicians are following engineering guidance in fixing the issue related to the knock sensor. The seventh occurrence happened on May 23rd of 2023. First one was in December 2021. As Hyundai is unable to correctly fix the issue I have repeatedly asked for them to replace the car since it is an extreme safety issue but they will not do so. Still waiting for diagnosis of the latest occurrence from May 23rd. Hyundai does not acknowledge that this issue is of safety concern and just indicates that the issue has been fixed each time it occurs.

Four times now Hyundai dealers have shrugged this off saying "we reset the codes" and we can't find an issue. We have been put in dangerous traffic conditions three of these times.

Starter replaced at less than 50,000 miles. Normally a starter will last 150,000 miles or more. I was past the warranty by 9 months but was under the mileage. Warranty was 5 years or 50,000 miles. Hyundai parts are cheap and do not last long compared to other companies.

I am submitting a formal complaint regarding ongoing and severe engine issues with my 2018 Hyundai Sonata SE. Despite proper maintenance, the vehicle has developed extreme oil consumption and misfire problems that have made the car unreliable, unsafe, and financially burdensome. Beginning around 118,000 miles, the vehicle started consuming oil so rapidly that I was forced to completely replace the oil every 1–2 weeks because it would run dangerously low or nearly empty. This level of oil loss is not normal, acceptable, or sustainable. I have detailed documentation, receipts, mileage logs, and maintenance history supporting this. In addition to oil consumption, the vehicle has repeatedly misfired, produced diagnostic trouble codes, and fouled spark plugs with oil. I have been forced to replace spark plugs approximately every two weeks, which is clearly abnormal for any modern vehicle. On multiple occasions, the vehicle has experienced violent knocking noises, severe loss of power, hesitation during acceleration, and near-stalling. One incident was so loud and aggressive that it felt like the engine was going to come out of the hood. These symptoms pose a serious safety risk while driving. I brought the car to a Hyundai dealership at approximately 118,000 miles for an oil-consumption test. The vehicle failed that test, clearly confirming excessive oil consumption. Despite this, Hyundai refused to provide repair, internal engine cleaning, or engine replacement, claiming the vehicle was already over 100,000 miles I have maintained this vehicle responsibly and have documentation of regular oil changes, spark-plug replacements, inspections, and diagnostic reports. Despite my efforts, the issue continues to worsen, and the vehicle remains unsafe and unreliable. This ongoing problem has caused significant financial strain, emotional stress, lost time, and fear of engine failure while driving. Based on countless similar complaints from other Hyundai owners, this appear

Urgent Complaint About Repeated Engine Issues on 2018 Hyundai Sonata (VIN: [XXX] ) Hello, I’m writing to file a formal complaint regarding a 2018 Hyundai Sonata, VIN [XXX] , currently financed and still owing $9,700, but the vehicle is no longer reliable or functional. For over a year, the car has had constant mechanical issues, primarily: •Spark plug failures within weeks of replacement •Repeated misfiring •Constant oil consumption — requiring oil refills every few days •No clear cause ever detected by diagnostic machines Despite replacing the top engine cover, spark plugs, filters, and performing other repairs, the car continues to break down and remains unsafe to drive. These issues began shortly after the 2-year warranty expired in 2023, and have escalated rapidly. This has caused severe financial hardship for my family, who still have to pay nearly $10,000 on a loan for a failing vehicle. I am requesting Hyundai to investigate whether this vehicle qualifies for: •An engine recall, hidden warranty, or class action settlement •A buyback or goodwill repair INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Burns oil fast. 900 miles from an oil change the car oil stick was empty. There are no signs of oil leaking. Every 1000 miles you have to place oil back into it. I’m not the only one complains of this issue. I was reading on Reddit and it’s thousands of people having the same issue.

- Component or system that failed: engine (cylinder #4 misfire) - Safety was put at risk twice: once when knock sensor went off on interstate (October) and engine went into limp mode (aka protection mode). Required a tow from the, which was tricky with a vehicle full of passengers. Safety was put at risk gain when vehicle began to stutter/sputter on interstate (December). Drove 4-cylinder vehicle essentially on three cylinders an hour to dealership - Problem has been confirmed by dealer (Southern States Hyundai, Raleigh, NC) - vehicle has been inspected by warranty inspector, who requests approval before disassembling engine to diagnose issue. However, based upon maintenance records and manufacturer's history of engine issues (more on this below), owner should not be liable for investigating a well known issue. At the time of this writing, the issue has been escalated beyond the dealership and warranty to Hyundai Motor America, and currently awaiting the results of their findings. - symptoms of the problem include constant oil leak from vehicle purchase in May 2024 up to engine failure in December 2024. Various temporary remedies (oil changes and repairs, including oil drain plug gasket replacement, crush washer replacement, and replacement of cracked oil pan) did not fix the issue. Additionally, in the October incident, Hyundai dealership (Sport Durst Hyundai, Durham, NC) simply updated the knock sensor detection (KDS) software, despite the vehicle previously receiving the update in 2019 (this can be verified). Finally, owner, noted "engine knocking" (aka 'tapping') in vehicle prior to engine failure. - Hyundai (the manufacturer) settled a class action lawsuit in 2021. Vehicle is one of the vehicles listed under Class Vehicles, but dealer, nor warranty company, nor Hyundai seem to want to resolve issue, which both alienates owner and presents a safety hazard, as the vehicle is unsafe to drive. All claims here will be supposed via documentation and images.

The motor blew in my 2018 Hyundai sonata due to a manufacturing defect. There was a recall on it a couple of years ago. They acknowledged it was a defect which is why they put an extended warranty on the engine. Because I could not come up with maintenance records dating back until 2018 (I only had them dating back to 2020), they denied my motor and will not fix it. I bought the car brand new in 2018 and have had nothing but issues ever since. I have had to change the oil in this vehicle every 2 weeks, because it would be nothing in the oil tank at all. When the recall come out, they said they could not fix the vehicle until the motor was blown. Now that the motor has blew, they won't fix it because I don't have repair records dating back 6 years ago.

Engine failure. Definitely a safety issue, check engine light flashing, limited engine power. Wouldn’t accelerate. Dealer inspected, there is a nationwide recall and class action lawsuits and they won’t replace even though it’s under warranty. False information saying maintenance neglect on my part. That is FALSE. Known failure and oil consumption. Rod bearing failure.

The car in recent months has twice lost power and been rendered in operable on the side of the road until it could be limped home. I had the car serviced last year for a recall of a fuel filter gasket and at that time I was informed that I also had an update done for a (k knock?) sensor prior done on the car before purchase. I inquired about what that was, and they told me at the time it was for an engine recall because that particular engine I have is known to have rod bearing failure and consume oil without any trace of where it goes and piston rattle. I told the gentleman after my fuel gasket was taken care of that I would like to look into that because I have the symptoms and would like to know. At that point in time, I was told that I may have to do an oil test to see if the car loses oil. I said well can we do that and he told me it's $300 out of pocket. I asked on average before anything ever done by Hyundai, how many times do people have to do this? He said 4 to 6 in his experience. I told him I did not have the money, but I will keep an eye on the car. Everything's been fine for six months a few months ago Randomly driving to work the car shut down on me. We got the car home and my fiancé did an oil change and new spark plugs and the car worked fine. June 9th 2025 on my way to work the issue happened again in the middle of traffic. I called my fiancé and we got the car home. He performed another oil change and spark plug replacement and took pictures this time because the spark plugs are gunked up. The car now runs again. He called Hyundai of America on my behalf to just ask them if they could set up the test to see if the car was failing and they told him that they were all independent Hyundai and he would have to pay the test fees. He told them in a formal email that he doesn't believe under the federal recall He is responsible for that and they answered back that he may be reimbursed. We are contacting you because we were advised to on the issue

I was going 80 mph on the interstate and suddenly my car went into limp mode and shooked really hard and dropped to 60 mph. I had to swerve to go onto the side of the road. The car behind me almost rammed into me. I contacted hampton hyundai for days to schedule an appt. I finally was able to drop off my vehicle to them but now they are telling me they have to do an oil consumption test but my car is in limp mode and it shakes when I drive it. The car is dangerous and they are trying to charge me $500 for a fuel pump replacement ( which I have a warranty of but they notified me that does not count but it matches exactly the possible reason). As you can see in the documents, they did not note that my fuel pump was broken. They just asked if I wanted to pay it so they can get started. I get normal oil changes done. They haven't even done a rod bearing test but just looked at the knock sensor and was telling me that they wanted to charge me to get that changed.

Severe oil leak into the oil pan has required frequent maintenance to keep oil in the car.
Mar 18, 2024
My car is misfiring, hesitating accelerating, severely shaking and vibrating which you can feel in the pedals and steering wheel, and the check engine light is on. This issue has been ongoing for over a week already. When the engine light first came on on 9/7, i pulled over on the side of the road and had a mobile mechanic check it out. The code was coming up as a bad ignition coil in cylinder 1. When he took out the coil and spark plugs, he saw scoring on the spark plug from oil as well as oil being consumed in the cylinder itself which has been causing my vehicle to misfire. The mobile mechanic stated on his invoice that I need a new engine. I took my car to Faulkner Hyundai on 9/11 and they said the best they can do is an oil consumption test even though they personally know I need an engine as well. I have not been able to drive the vehicle due to the ongoing issues, I am afraid for my life and safety that god forbid the car stalls out on the highway while I am traveling to or from work I could get into a major accident. They are putting my life in jeopardy.

See attached document for complaint. Please let me know how quickly the service parts for these two recalls are physically located in your shop and how soon the required recalls will be performed. I have been getting periodic recall notices for years and have yet to obtain the satisfaction of an adequate local response from your service department. I can recall three instances when I was told the parts were ready, only to leam, upon arrival, they were not. The last incident was on May 27"', when I was told the parts were ready and I could have the recall performed on May 30'". Another huge disappointment occurred when I was told the parts were not available. That is not the way to run a governmental required recall program.

While driving on the highway, my 2018 Hyundai Sonata experienced sudden loss of engine power and became undrivable. The failure occurred without warning at approximately 86,500 miles. At the time of the incident, there were two children in the vehicle, and the breakdown occurred at night in cold temperatures (approximately 20°F). An authorized Hyundai dealership later diagnosed zero compression in cylinder 3 and confirmed a cracked piston, recommending full engine replacement. The sudden loss of power while driving created a safety risk due to traffic conditions and environmental exposure.

My 2018 Hyundai Sonata (approx. 60,000 miles) began consuming excessive oil, and the engine started smoking while driving. My wife barely made it to the dealership — the car was unsafe, struggled to stay running, and visibly smoked from under the hood. Hyundai acknowledged the oil issue but refused to cover engine replacement. Instead, they approved a one-time combustion chamber cleaning and requested we drive the car 1,000 miles to "see if it gets better." This is a major safety concern. The vehicle is part of a group of Hyundai models known to have defective Theta II engines that have led to engine failure, fire risk, and recalls. This issue is widespread, and Hyundai is not taking proper responsibility for defective engines in cars like mine.

My 2018 Hyundai Sonata GDI Engine stop working while I was driving on the freeway without a warning prior to the issue. It never gave me a heads up in advance that the engine needed service. No check engine light to alert me that an issue needed attention. I learned about the engine problem when my engine stop working while I was on the freeway. I heard a loud noise coming from the engine and within seconds my RPM started going down and my car started loosing power while I was driving on the freeway. At the same time my check engine light came on and it was flashing. At that moment I realize something bad was happening with my motor. The check engine light was not on before that. It never alerted me before that, and when it came on flashing on and off it was already too late because my engine was dying and it died and didn't turn back on after I pulled over in the side of the freeway. I was so scared. The cars where going so fast and very close to my car with little room to pull over. The high velocity of the others cars where making my car cradle from the wind. It was so terrifying for me and my little dog i had with me. My seat belt stop working a few weeks before my engine died, and the thought of me getting hit by another car without a seat belt on. I've never been scared for my life like I was on that day. Hyundai dealer sold me a car with a bad engine. I was putting atleast 1 quart of oil every other week sometimes every week in the past year until just recently. I've only had it for 3 years since I bought it and I was putting 1 quart of oil every month in the beginning and with time the consumption of oil increased and increased more with time. Hyundai service my car for an oil gasket last year that should've been cover under warranty, but made me pay for it. I made it aware to them about the excessive oil consumption and told them it wasn't normal how much oil the car was consuming but they denied to service my car under warranty.

IN FEB 2020 MY SONATA WENT INTO SAFE MODE AFTER EXITING HIGHWAY AND DEALER ENDED UP REPLACING "KNOCK SENSOR". IN DECEMBER 2020 MY ENGINE "STUTTERED" THROWING ME FORWARD AS IF I HAD HIT BRAKES HARD. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR MESSAGES OCCURRED AND AFTER A FEW SECONDS CAR ACTED NORMALLY MOSTLY. A FEW DAYS LATER AFTER EXITING HIGHWAY AGAIN THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT (ORANGE) CAME ON ALONG WITH ERROR MESSAGE "POSSIBLE CONDITION WITH ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM" HAS BEEN DETECTED. CAR DID NOT GO INTO "SAFE MODE" AND SEEMED TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY. I CONTACTED DEALER WHO ASSURED ME SAFE TO DRIVE OVER HUNDRED MILES BACK TO DEALERSHIP IN THIS CONDITION TO CHECK. I DROVE BACK FROM EAST COAST FL TO WEST COAST FL TO TURN CAR IN. I BELIEVE ENGINE ISSUE EXPERIENCED IS RELATED TO THE THETA ENGINE ISSUE AND REPAIR WOULD BE COVERED UNDER SETTLEMENT. DEALERSHIP DISAGREES AND HAS INDICATED ISSUE IS WITH FUEL PUMPS (BOTH ARE BEING REPLACED) AND CHARGING ME $2300.

The passenger side seat belt locks up. It can lock up immediately when putting it on or it can lock up if I just lean a little bit forward. It will get tighter and tighter to the point where it is very uncomfortable. I have to unhook the seatbelt and re hook. Sometimes this takes many attempts. This is scary when you are going down the highway at 65mph. The dealership has replaced it twice. They were able to see the problem because my husband drove straight to the dealership once when it locked up on me. The last time they replaced it, no one was in the passenger side until we were leaving for vacation. We didn't even get out of the garage when it locked up again. The dealership was reluctant to replace it. They said all seat belts lock up! Because of Covid my husband and I haven't driven much. Once we started going out again we became aware of the problem.

IT TRAVELED QUITE A DISTANCE BEFORE RUNNING INTO SOME INANIMATE THAT CAUSED IT TO STOP. IT WAS IN A DRIVEWAY BEHINDS BUILDINGS AND DID EVENTUALLY CROSS OVER A SIDE STREET BEFORE STOPPING. I DON'T SEE WHY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE DID NOT HOLD, EVEN THOUGH NOT IN PARK?

STEERING

Lost control of the car - the car was brought in to Hyundai Maxon in Union, NJ and were told the steering column was defective and the car is not safe to be driven, needed a steering column replacement. Dropped the car off 12/12/2024 and was quoted for the replacement of the part (with a new one). On January 17, 2025—36 days after the dealership had my car—I was informed that the required part was unavailable nationally, with no ETA for availability. The fact that this critical part is unavailable at a national level raises significant concerns. Is this indicative of a broader manufacturing issue? Hyundai has provided no explanation or transparency regarding why this part cannot be sourced, further compounding my frustration as a loyal customer.

I was driving and tried to make a turn when the steering wheel gave out on me unexpectedly. This lead my car to continue forward onto the other lane of oncoming traffic. The steering wheel signal also turned on. When my car was finally able to turn and I arrived at my destination, I parked my car for 2 hrs. After it was time to leave the battery then died. I was unable to use the key or inside button to open my trunk, and had to wait for assistance. I believe these two issues correlate with the electrical power steering.

43000 miles on car. original owner. new battery. car does not cold start in the morning. all electronics light up, but engine doesn't start. This is a known issue from all the posts i found online, yet Hyundai has not issued a recall. I paid 300 for a battery 2 weeks ago and the issue didn't resolve. Now i am being told by dealer it is the starter and it's not covered because my 5 yr warranty is expired (my car is 6 years old). This is a known safety issue across the 2018 Sonata line. This should be a recall or bulletin, instead I have to come up with hundreds of dollars more to replace a starter on a car with ONLY 43,000 miles.

My car is part of a campaign due to rod-bearing failure where the engine experiences problems such as complete failure, vibrating, hesitating, engine light on, and oil light on. I've been communicating with Hyundai who is not helping me with this issue. I was advised by them to continue driving the car "until the engine seizes", or I hear "a loud knocking noise". Upon inspection, three local Hyundai employees "agreed 100%" I need a new engine. However, per these employees Hyundai Corporate will not approve the replacement even though the vehicle is constantly experiencing the above symptoms above, simply because there is not a "loud knocking noise" coming from the engine. Even though ALL the other issues are present. This is very unsafe. I have a minor child I take to school daily, for an advisor to advise to drive the vehicle until "the engine seizes" is extremely dangerous, especially when they are aware my VIN is associated with engine replacement. My car exhibits symptoms of a rod-bearing failure and this multi-billion dollar company is taking advantage of hard-working urban mothers, by turning a blind eye and trying to require me to pay thousands of dollars up front for a problem THEY created by selling a vehicle with faulty engine. Again, the technicians indicated i in fact do need the engine replaced, but that Hyundai Corporate will require me to pay for a diagnostic test, rod-bearing test, and engine compression test because Corporate does not take their word for it. The fact a auto manufacturer is advising people to drive in such an unsafe manner is disheartening. If my child and I get injured in an accident by following their advice, our blood will be on their hands!

PURCHASED NEW 2018 SONATA SEL MODEL IN CALIFORNIA. WHILE DRIVING, THE TRANSMISSION STARTS TO HARD DOWNSHIFT WHEN THE BRAKE IS APPLIED. I FOUND OUT THAT THIS HARD DOWNSHIFTING AND JOLTING/THUMPING OF ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION ONLY OCCURS WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 10 TO 15MPH. IT CAN BE DESCRIBED AS FOLLOWS, AFTER THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS BEEN GENTLY APPLIED AND LIGHTLY RELEASED BUT THEN THE CAR ITSELF APPLIED ITS BRAKE AGAIN. IT TERRIFIES THE DRIVER'S DRIVING CONDITIONS, MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY.

On [XXX] I was driving on [XXX] [XXX] from Rockville, Maryland when my vehicle (2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited) started to lose power and control and all dash lights started to show. I was able to move the vehicle to the highway shoulder before all power and control failed. Had I been moving at a higher speed or in heavier traffic, or been slower to react this could have led to a catastrophic incident. When the roadside assistance showed up they found that my alternator had completely detached from my vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the Sheehy Hyundai dealership in Waldorf, MD and examined on [XXX]. The maintenance staff informed me that there were 3 other similar cases they're working on, and that there is a flaw in the design of the alternator bracket using aluminum materials that failed, and that they've reported this systemic issue to the manufacturer but have yet to receive any indications that this would be considered for a recall despite the catastrophic impact this could have. I was stopped at a red light and when it turned green, I began to accelerate. The car stuttered and the check engine light was blinking. I pulled over and had Autozone run the code. The code is P1326, engine knock sensor. It was put into limp mode and it shook pretty bad in lower gears while accelerating. I had to pull over and let several cars pass me as I couldn't go above 2,000 RPMs. When I got home, I called roadside assistance and had it towed to the nearest dealership. That was this morning (5-4-2022). I just purchased this car used in the beginning of March. I don't have all the records since I just purchased the vehicle used. I just changed the oil last week.

I THEN TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND HYUNDAI HAD NOT RECALLED MY SPECIFIC CAR. DEALER WAS ABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE. THE CLEARED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. ONE MILE DOWN THE ROAD EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED. CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THEIR SHOP WITH NO ETA OF REPAIR.

ON FIVE SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE WILL LOOSE POWER AND ABILITY ACCELERATE WITH A FLASHING ENGINE LIGHT. THESE INCIDENTS HAVE ALMOST CAUSED ME TO BE REAR ENDED THREE TIMES BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCELERATE ABOVE 60MPH IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC ON A BUSY INTERSTATE AND THE ABILITY JUST STOPS QUICKLY WITH NO WARNING. THE VEHICLE ALSO HAS BEEN HAVING THE RPMS DROP TO 0 AND SHOOT BACK UP WHILE BRAKING, AND WHILE DRIVING IT IS TOUGH TO ACCELERATE AND THEN YOU WILL FEEL A NOTICEABLE 'KICK' AND THE RPMS WILL SHOOT UP DRASTICALLY BEFORE IT WILL ACCELERATE. I HAVE HAD 2 SOFTWARE UPDATES DONE, A NEW WIRE HARNESS, KNOCK SENSOR CLEANING AND A KNOCK SENSOR REPLACEMENT. THE ENGINE CODE IS ALWAYS THE SAME 1326.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The fuel pump filter housing is the cause of the malfunction, it is available for inspection upon request. When I am driving I intermittently lose fuel delivery altogether and my car comes to a halt for a second until I press on the gas pedal to get the car going again, this puts myself and other people in danger if my car randomly stops while I am driving around others and causes crash risk. An independent service center ran a diagnostic and stated it was the fuel pump filter housing. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance reps. But it has been inspected by the service center near me. An engine code was produced that pointed to the gas cap, but the gas cap was fine, which indicates fuel delivery issues. There was also shaking during acceleration prior to the incident happening. My VIN does not fall under the current extended warranty, but the issues are identical to the issues of the VINs that do fall under the extended warranty.

I was the owner of a 2018 Sonata until I was t-boned and the car was totaled. I started to make a left turn into a school parking lot when the engine kind of stalled or more like stuttered and did not go forward as usual. The oncoming car then struck me before I was completely in the driveway. My vehicle was totaled as was the other one. Fortunately no one was on the passenger's side where the other car hit me. However the seat belt did not engage which resulted in me slamming very hard into the steering column. This resulted in bruised on my right side which cleared up in several weeks, but, unfortunately, I received a heart contusion on my left side which is still causing shortness of breath. Hyundai will not acknowledge a problem with the engine or the seat belt.

During multiple dealership visits in 2025, my 2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0T was repeatedly returned in unsafe condition. Southern Hyundai installed both front CV axles and torqued them incorrectly. The right axle was later confirmed under-torqued by about 50 ft-lbs, and the left axle was later found over-torqued 40ft-lbs Priority Hyundai later identified and corrected the under-torqued right axle, which briefly improved symptoms but did not resolve the underlying issue. When I returned for a follow-up on October 29, 2025, for a documentation-only appointment due to an active corporate case, the dealer ignored my instructions and altered evidence by loosening and re-torquing the left axle nut without consent. They recorded the torque at 250 ft-lbs in the repair order but failed to capture the required photos or before/after readings and referenced the wrong vehicle’s torque specification (Hyundai Elantra) in the documentation. Since then, the vehicle has continued to show steering pull, vibration, and instability at speed. Several visits showed only 0–3 miles of verification driving after safety-critical repairs involving brakes, suspension, and driveline components. Aftermarket parts were installed when OEM parts were promised, and uneven tire wear developed quickly. Safety risks include wheel-bearing damage, steering loss, and driveline separation due to repeated improper torque and altered evidence. Independent Firestone and Honda technicians have verified these issues. The matter remains under active Hyundai Corporate Case #[XXX]. About a year and half ago, a lot of my engine trouble lights turned on while driving. It was sleeting at that time when the lights turned on and they're still on today. I paid to have the Hyundai dealer to check it out soon after the trouble lights first turned on. They diagnosed the problem as a faulty HECU. I would have had them replace this, but they estimated it would cost about $3800 to fix. This HECU malfunction is causing the following issues: ABS does not work, traction control does not work, forward collision prevention does not work, brake auto hold does not work, cruise control does not work probably because it can't auto brake any more. I've had some scary times driving and trying to stop when the roads have been wet or snowy.

On 05/27/2025, my rear back-up camera started to malfunction. Last week my dash started to malfunction electronically. When I would start my vehicle, all of the lights would start to turn on and stay on on my dash. My speedometer would not move while I was driving, so I could not see how fast I was going. I believe this is a severe safety issue for myself as well as others. The tachometer would jump up and down and would not function correctly. My dash stated that I had low tire pressure, that I was having problems with my traction control, that my BSD system was not working, that my ABS was not working, that my emergency brake was on even though it was not. It also stated that I did have functioning air bags, which is a severe safety hazard in the chance that I could've gotten into a wreck and they might not have worked. It also stated that I was not in Drive even though I clearly was. It also stated that I had no power steering while I was driving, before the light would turn off and I could properly steer again. This is a severe safety issue that could put me at risk. Finally, my check engine light turned on and stayed on. Yesterday on 06/09/2025 I was able to take it a vehicle maintenance shop so they could run a full diagnostic test. They discovered that I did not have power steering even though there was fluid due to the electrical problems with my dash. They also discovered the C-CAN buss was off and that my vehicle was losing communications with the TCM and HVAC. It was discovered that this was due to my rear view back-up camera malfunctioning, causing the C-CAN network to short out. They had to unplug my rear back-up camera to return everything to normal. I have found on hyundai recall forms that other years of hyundai models had similar problems and I believe that 2018 hyundai sonatas are also having the same problem. I wanted it to be made aware because online, people have stated they are having the same issues. Attached gif that shows part of problem.

Multiple critical mechanical and safety issues have occurred with my 2018 Hyundai Sonata Sport. The vehicle has experienced persistent engine misfire, a severe oil leak, emissions system failure, and extensive paint deterioration. A certified technician confirmed an active oil pan leak with no dashboard warning lights, posing a fire and stalling hazard. To prevent further damage, I replaced the entire oil pan and spark plugs at a personal cost of approximately $800 at Firestone Complete Auto Care. The check engine light revealed diagnostic code P0420 – Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). An O’Reilly emissions scan confirmed the catalytic converter failure, and emissions status was marked “RED.” The vehicle will not pass an OBD-based emissions test. At 149,219 miles, Hyundai refused warranty coverage due to mileage. A certified Hyundai dealership quoted $3,722 to replace both the catalytic converter and valve cover gasket, which remains unaffordable and unrepaired. In addition, the factory-applied white paint began peeling severely from the hood and roof. Although Hyundai issued a warranty extension for this known defect, the dealership refused to repaint the hood, citing a minor dent — even though the peeling is clearly unrelated. The exposed metal has started to rust, risking structural deterioration. All concerns have been evaluated by certified Hyundai service and independent professionals. These combined mechanical, emissions, and exterior failures raise serious safety and durability concerns. I am filing this report to document manufacturer-related defects that may affect other owners of this model and year.

The engine stalls when driving, loses power, hard time to start. It uses an extensive amount of oil. Losing power/stalling can result in accident or fire in my engine. Yes check engine light came on said it was coils/plugs changed them 2xs already. Took it to a mechanic was told there’s a recall on engine it’s a valve that is not getting air through that can potentially case a Fire in my engine.

When my car suddenly stopped on the highway, I encountered an issue with the “body control module.” The car wouldn’t start, and the key fob was ineffective. Additionally, the airbags stopped working. I don’t recall all the details, but I was unsure of where to report the dangerous vehicle. I’ve noticed several other Hyundai owners complaining about this issue, where their cars suddenly stop in the middle of nowhere.

Vehicle 1 operating normally in traffic on [XXX] in Westfield MA. Operator 1 notices alert on dashboard. As Operator 1 looks down briefly and returns eyes immediately to the road, she sees Vehicle 2 braking to slow or stop. Operator 1 depresses brakes, but vehicle does not slow as it usually does, nor does Automatic Emergency Braking engage as it always has in the past. Front of Vehicle 1 makes contact with rear of Vehicle 2. Dashcam footage appears like brakes did not activate at all, either manually or automatically. Vehicle 1 airbags deploy. Westfield Police respond, as well as Westfield Fire, who cut the battery cable. Vehicle towed to Interstate Towing, Inc. Yard 5, 20 Clifton St, Westfield, Ma 01085. (413) 593-1900 interstatetowing.com. Owner 1 viewed vehicle at tow yard, and noted that the battery was completely melted, with only portions of the plastic casing along with internal plates visible. Much of the plastic and rubber components immediately adjacent to battery location were melted and deformed. As a layperson, it almost appears as though the battery was in the process of shorting out just prior to the collision, possibly rendering many of the safety systems inoperable. The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 MPH the vehicle suddenly began sputtering and then completely stalled. The contact had to coast to the side of the road and noticed the check engine light illuminated. After approximately 10 minutes, the vehicle was able to restart. When starting the vehicle there would be a sputtering followed by the vehicle shutting off. The failure began to occur while idle as well. The contact stated that while attempting to reverse out of a parking spot the vehicle suddenly accelerated forward instead. As a result, the vehicle ended up crashing into a concrete light post. The air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries or medical attention needed. The vehicle was able to be driven after. No police report was filed. The vehicle had been towed to the dealer who had stated that the starter relay issue may be the cause, however, because of not being able to duplicate the failure they were unable to give an official diagnosis. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

As soon as I start to press on my brakes the vehicle starts violently pulsating and locks up. Took the dealership they said my rotors and brakes were fine and we're unable to give any reason for this. Without brakes I cannot stop my vehicle and it seems like a faulty ABS but no light on dashboard. The engine consumes nearly 5.2 qts of oil in 1000 miles. Being this is not normal I have no idea I was running out of oil as soon as I was changing it which could have led to my entire engine stalling out and causing me to wreck. It's putting my life as well as other people's on the roads and danger

I was driving on freeway and all dashboard warning started to flicker on and off simultaneously then my steering wheel locked in place. I was unable to stop or turn wheel and had to maneuver car until it came to a stop. I had to get it towed home. I spoke with dealership and asked me to tow it to them so they can look at it and gave me a report that mention nothing about what I originally told them it did while I was driving but pointed out everything else that was wrong with it that added up to more than $4,500.00 in repairs. Dealership guy got upset that I asked him to email rather than phone calls and didn’t want to answer anything through email only phone calls he was refusing service and kept pushing us to approve all the other expenses without telling me anything about why the car did what it did. He then told me that it was my fault since car was just passed over 100,000 miles and I should’ve known that was going to happen. Luckily nobody got hurt during this. My wife was pregnant at the time and thank goodness nothing bad happened and dealership guy was so unprofessional and rude and just wanted our money rather than help by giving us any answers.

I PURCHASED THE 2018 HYUNDAI SONATA 2.0T ON 8/27/18. AFTER WE WERE ABLE TO EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT DRIVING CONDITIONS AND SITUATIONS, MY HUSBAND AND I NOTICED THAT (1) AT NIGHT, WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE WINDSHIELD APPEARED VERY DARK AS IF IT WAS HEAVILY TINTED,AND MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO SEE THE ROAD. (2) WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY OR ROAD, WITH NORMAL BEAM HEADLIGHTS, WE NOTICED THAT THE LINE OF DEMARCATION FROM HEADLIGHT TO DARK ROAD WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR. THE REASON GIVEN BY THE MAINTENANCE DEPT WAS THAT THIS WAS SO CARS IN FRONT WOULDN'T BE BLINDED BY THE HEADLIGHT. TO US, IT SEEMED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE AIMED TOO LOW. I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE MORE THAN 20 FEET IN FRONT OF MY CAR. WE WERE TOLD THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE. ALSO, WHEN MAKING A TURN, THE AREA OPPOSITE THE DIRECTION OF THE TURN IS COMPLETELY DARK BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE HEADLIGHTS WORK ON A TURN. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS-SHOULD SOMEONE DECIDE TO WALK THERE OR IF THERE IS AN ANIMAL, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEE ANYTHING. AGAIN I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. (3) MY HUSBAND PUT RAIN-X ON ALL THE WINDOWS OF THE CAR. IT WORKED ON EVERY WINDOW EXCEPT THE WINDSHIELD. WE THOUGHT THERE WAS SOME SORT OF COATING PLACED BY THE MANUFACTURER. I WAS TOLD NO THERE WAS NOT. THEY COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE RAIN-X DIDN'T TAKE. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY SPENT QUITE A BIT OF TIME "SCRAPING THE WINDSHIELD", BUT NOTHING CAME OFF. WE STILL DO NOT KNOW WHY IT SHOULD DO THAT. (4) I NOTICED. WHETHER I WAS DRIVING IN SMART OR SPORT MODE, THEIR IS AN ANNOYING HESITATION WHEN I STEP ON THE GAS. WHEN THE STOPLIGHT TURNS GREEN, IT TAKES SEVERAL SECONDS BEFORE THE CAR IS ABLE TO MOVE AT NORMAL SPEED. WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY RECEIVED LOTS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THAT, BUT NO OFFER FOR A FIX.

WHILE DRIVING 30MPH APPROACHING A RED LIGHT, MY 2018 SONATA CUT OFF ONCE I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AT THE RED LIGHT. I WAS IN CITY LIMITS APPROACHING A HWY INTERSECTION. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR RESTARTED AFTER ONE ATTEMPT. ONCE THE VEHICLE RE STARTED IT WAS SLUGGISH,SPUTTERING AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 20MPH... I MADE IT HOME SAFELY NONETHELESS. I LEFT THE CAR PARKED FOR APPROX 10 MINS AND IT RESTARTED EASILY. I THEN DROVE IT DIRECTLY TO THE LOCAL DEALER WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED. I WAS TOLD THE CAR STOPPED BECAUSE THE ENGINE SYSTEM REQUIRED AN UPDATE. THE UPDATE WAS COMPLETED AND I DROVE THE CAR HOME. THE NEXT DAY OR MAYBE TWO DAYS LATER I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE DEALERSHIP SAYING MY CAR REQUIRED A FREE RECALL AND TO SCHEDULE A DATE TO HAVE THE CAR SERVICED. OVER THE PHONE I WAS TOLD SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF THE ENGINE HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WHEN THE CAR'S ENGINE CUT OFF IN TRAFFIC I WAS EN ROUTE TO PICKING UP MY TODDLER. I NO LONGER FELT SAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND I TRADED THE CAR IN AND CUT MY LOSSES, WHICH WERE SUBSTANTIAL. OTHER PROBLEMS I NOTICED IN THE TIME I HAD THE VEHICLE WERE THAT THE BACK PASSENGER SEAT BELT LOCKED OR ANCHORED IF I LEANED FORWARD SLIGHTLY AND LOW VISIBILITY AT NIGHT THROUGH THE FRONT WINSHIELD.

THROTTLE RESPONSE: FEELS LIKE THE OLD VEHICLES WITH A FLAT SPOT IN THE CARBURETOR ACCELERATOR PUMP. THE "THREE SECOND' RULE APPLIES WHEN THE THROTTLE PETAL IS PUSHED. THERE IS A SERIOUS HESITATION AS THE ENGINE TENDS TO FALL FLAT BEFORE ACCELERATING. HAS TO DUE WITH THE SIX SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS DUEL CLUTCH WHICH ACTS AS IF A PERSON WERE OPERATING A STANDARD TRANSMISSION CLUTCH. I HAVE DISCUSSED THIS PROBLEM/CONCERN SEVERAL TIMES WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INDICATED THEY RECEIVE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS. IT IS INDICATED THE DRIVERS EITHER LOVE THE VEHICLE WITH THIS PROBLEM OR HATE. WE WERE NEVER TOLD OF THIS SITUATION. AND THERE IS NO FIX FOR THIS. THIS SITUATION CAN OCCUR WHEN LEAVING A STOPPED POSITION, WHEN TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT FROM A STOPPED POSITION, ACCELERATING UP A HILL IN MOVING TRAFFIC OR ON A STREET. THIS ALL DEPENDS ON THE DRIVERS REACTION TO THE THROTTLE PEDAL. WHEN ONE NEEDS TO ACCELERATE WHILE IN MOTION THERE TENDS TO BE A SHUDDERING/STUTTERING OF THE ENGINE. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED SHORTLY WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN FEBRUARY 2018 AND HAS BEEN ON GOING. I SET THE "WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN" AS STARTING DATE. CAN BE VARY CONCERNING WHEN ENTERING TRAFFIC FOR OLDER DRIVERS. I CANNOT FIND ANY MORE DESCRIPTIONS FOR THIS SITUATION. THERE ARE NO DOCUMENTS AT MY DISPOSAL AT THIS TIME. THANK YOU.

WAS DRIVING A BRAND NEW HYUNDAI SONATA 2018 VEHICLE FOR A WEEK WITH 300 MILES ON IT AND WAS ABOUT TO EXIT ON A FREEWAY RAMP, BUT SUDDENLY LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED AND WHEN THE MECHANICS AT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TOOK A LOOK AT THE VEHICLE, THEY WERE UNSURE OF HOW THE LOWER ARM ASSEMBLY ON THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE (FRONT SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM) WITH THE BALL AND JOINT CONNECTION WAS DISCONNECTED, WITHOUT HAVING ANY SCUFFS/SCRATCHES ON THE ARM ASSEMBLY OR FRONT BUMPER IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAVE BEEN RUN OVER, BUT HYUNDAI REFUSES TO ADMIT ANY FAULT AND DISREGARDS ANY POSSIBILITIES OF PRODUCT ISSUES AND PUTS THE BLAME ON DRIVER. THE PICTURES TAKEN SHOW NO SCRATCHES OR SCUFF MARKS DIRECTLY TO THE CONTROL ARM, NOR THE BUMPER OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH DENIES THAT A COLLISION COULD HAVE RESULTED IN THE DAMAGE, YET HYUNDAI BELIEVES THAT THERE WAS A COLLISION PER THE DRIVER THAT CAUSED THE DAMAGE. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE ESPECIALLY SINCE IT OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. HAVE BEEN TRYING TO UNDERSTAND HOW THIS HAPPENED, BUT HYUNDAI ONLY PROVIDES VAGUE RESPONSES TO CLAIMS AND QUESTIONS AND FAILS TO PROVIDE ANY SOLID EXPLANATIONS REGARDING THE ACTUAL ISSUE OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY AND SIMPLY DICTATED THE RESULTS OF THEIR INSPECTION AS "NO ISSUES WITH THE BRAKING OR STEERING SYSTEMS" WHEN I SPECIFICALLY HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE LOWER ARM ASSEMBLY PART. CURRENTLY HAVE AN ON-GOING CASE WITH HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS (#10727408) WITH NO HELPFUL OR ACCURATE EXPLANATIONS OR ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF THE SAFETY ISSUE AT HAND FROM HYUNDAI.
