How to read a Infiniti FX35 VIN — every digit explained
Every Infiniti FX35 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this FX35.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your FX35 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Air Bags 16 Read
Ever since I bought my infiniti the air bag light flashed rapidly on the dash. I received notice a couple years ago about the air bags being recalled.I took my vehicle to Roseville Infiniti and supposedly the airbags were replaced I expected it to take a couple hours it was in and out in under 2 hours. When i left the deLership the light was still blinking and never quit blinking. My concern was to call and ask why it was still blinking ? I was told that it probably wasnt reset however the air bag was replaced . I was in an accident recently and it was a serious frontal collision and not one airbag went off . I was seriously injured my hand was fractured my left leg was hurt and I had a concussion and cervical sprain this all would have been prevented had my airbags deployed.
Takata recall. I was driving my fx35 2012 infiniti and the airbag spontaneously deployed and exploded. I did not hit any car or object, this was not due to an accident.... Just a deployment. It was a large boom, loud explosion, smell of a strong gun powder odor that burns your eyes. The airbag was torn. Please note that this happened as i was driving down a suburb street, no more than 35 mph. I stopped the car right in the lane as i was in shock ....seeing no obstruction i pulled into the gas station a few yards up. Loud
Takata recall needed on infiniti fx35 2012. I was in motion, driving 75 mph on the freeway. A piece of debris bounced off of a car in my left lane and flew underneath my car. Bang! My airbags ejected and slammed my face hard. My whole front windshield blew white. I couldn't see anything in front of me. Trying to push the airbag down with one hand, while steering with the other hand at the same time, i was essentially driving blind on the freeway with speeding cars all around me. On top of that i couldn't move, because the seatbelts locked me. It's a wonder i didn't slam on the breaks, or swerve into the other lanes, a perfectly natural reaction. I used my peripheral vision to move into the slower lanes to the right of me. The last lane ended up being the exit lane. When the four of us got out to examine what we thought would be a huge dent, we were shocked. The car looked perfect. No collision. No damage. It was the airbags. Had we been injured or worse yet, killed in a crash that day (not to mention all the people in the surrounding cars) we would never have ascertained that it was as a result of the faulty airbag sensor. It happened so quickly that i would not have known what had come first - the accident or the airbags.
While driving in the middle lane on a five lane freeway, a piece of debris (about 1x2 ft) was bouncing from lane to lane. It bounced into my lane and went under my 2012 infinite fx35. I heard a loud bang and my airbags ejected open. My whole front windshield blew white, leaving me unable to see the road. Essentially, i was driving blindly at highway speed on the freeway with moving cars all around me. It's a wonder i didn't slam on my brakes, swerve or plow into the cars that i was behind, in front of, or to the side of me on the freeway. To think about the catastrophic consequences! Whited out front window, large impeding airbag in my face, but miraculously, i managed to safely maneuver across two lanes of traffic! The last lane turned out to be the exit off the freeway, where there was a gas station. When we stopped there, my three passengers and i got out of the car and immediately walked around it, looking to see what damage was visible on my infiniti. It looked perfect: no signs of external damage whatsoever. No collision. No damage. A defective and hypersensitive sensor is something that needs to be looked into. Was this an isolated incident? Or is this something that should be considered an infiniti recall? The events in my case happened so quickly that had we had an accident, i would never have known what had come first, the accident, or the airbag. My auto insurance company was shocked that this occurred when there was absolutely no damage to the outside of my infiniti. The interior however, was another thing altogether ' the airbags, the dashboard, the computer system, the seat belts, etc., it was unbelievable. They decided to do a thorough investigation. Their conclusion? My infiniti deemed "totaled" was zero my fault.
My airbag light came on again recently, without any incident and I am concerned that this means my car is now unsafe. This happened in 2017 and it was a repair that was made without charge. I have now been informed that it would cost over $1,000 to repair, but I think this is a malfunction that should be covered by the Dealer, as there has been an issue with the airbags before.
Good day! According to the VIN code of my car, there are revocable companies, the dealer refuses to replace it.
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 infiniti fx35. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 20v008000 (air bags) however, the vin was not included. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the vin was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
Airbag defective and my dash board is cracked
Takara recall l. Please replace this item by revocable company. I ask you to clarify what revocable campaigns are conducted for my car?
Takata recall for airbag taking too long!!!! First the dealer said my car was not subject to the recall. Now your site says the dealer is "waiting on parts". I think the oldest cars should be fixed first.

I bought my vehicle used (2003 fx 35) in 2010 and have experienced what seems to be some very common complaints associated with the vehicle . Defects that the local dealers (mcallen , texas) have refused to address. 1) cracked dash. Several large cracks running the length of the dashes. 2) faulty car lock actuators. This seems absolutely ridiculous that the problems can be so prevalent (check the web) , but yet nissan fails to take responsibility for it. I can understand the dash not being a hazard , however, the locks can be. I cant even open my hatch, and this is suppose to be a luxury vehicle? *tr
Front door locks intermittently work. Some times they will not unlock with the key fob and must use a key. Recently they have been locking by themselves as if the actuator fails. *tr
Vehicle locks do not work correctly. Very inconsistent. Cannot open them , and cannot close them using the electronic locking system. This is a safety hazard to my six year old who sits in the back. *tr
Power door lock actuators operate intermittently. There has been several instances having the rear child door lock engaged and we could not open the rear doors from the outside because the actuators failed. Children had to exit out the front by climbing over the front seats. While at a parking garage a large vehicle parked close to the passenger side of our car and could not open doors to re-enter. Again, intermittent operation of power door lock actuators , both front and rear driver side door locks failed. We had to enter the vehicle through the rear tailgate/hatch. Took vehicle in for service and lock were operating at that time and manufacturer recommended replacing the door lock actuators. Still to this day the locks operate intermittently, and now have 115,000 miles. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 infiniti fx35. The contact stated that the vehicle doors could not be unlocked or locked using the key fob or the interior door lock. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The technician replaced the driver side door lock actuator. After the repair the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician advised that the passenger side door actuator would have to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
I have a 2003 infinity fx35, for some time i have been having trouble with all the door actuators they sometime work and some not, now they don't work at all. It started with the drivers door and like 2 months later the rest of the doors including the trunk. I had it check with an electromechanical and he told me is the door actuators that i have to replace all of them. I have been reading that this happens to all infinity fx35 models and some others. I really think this is a very serious safety issue and something most be done about it.... Infinity should take care of this since is a very common malfunction in they're cars. 1 actuator going bad is one thing but all of them is another. This is a very high safety issue that needs to be take care off. *tr
All four door locks as well as the hatch lock ceased to work properly (i.e. Would not lock or unlock when the automatic lock button was pushed.) told that it was an actuator problem, and that all would need to be replaced (at great expense). This is an obvious safety issue. First, with children in the car, doors could not be locked or unlocked quickly in the case of an emergency. Also, when driving alone, security of the car was likewise compromised. Also troubling was that the sound of doors locking would still be heard, but the doors were not actually locked--thus leading drivers to think their car was secure when in fact it was not. This is a prevalent problem with these suv's and should be considered for a component recall. *tr
2003 fx 35 infiniti passenger, driver and rear hatch door will not lock or unlock when pushing the lock button. Have to manually reach to open. Major safety issue having children in the car. *tr
Have a 2003 infiniti fx35, and the electronic locks now do not fully lock or unlock and the unlock message appear on the screen while driving (the work when they want). First one door went out now the other. My sense is that a small child or elderly person in the back could be in serious danger if there were an immediate need for them to be evacuated. With only one manual lock for the entire vehicle (on the driver's door) a person would have to go across the car to manually unlock the passenger side rear door in an emergency (in addition to reaching behind the driver's seat for the driver's side rear door). Since i see this as a significant safety issue, i believe nhtsa should investigate and order an appropriate recall. If you peruse various message boards on the web, you will see that this is a rather significant issue associated with many nissan products (the sister murano is also so afflicted). *tr
Doors will not lock or unlock along with gasdoor lock. Dealership says its an actuator problem, they all need to be replaced at a cost of nearly $500 per lock times 6 locks. (4 doors, rear hatch and gasdoor) safety issue as sometimes i cannot get out of the driver side door. *tr

I reported my vehicle is a whining noise coming from the engine. I took it in for a diagnosis. The technician informed me that no codes were detected; however believes it is the alternator. The car has 39k miles. As a previous owner of a 2011 infiniti, i believe this is a manufacture defect as i am the second owner and driven it for less than 6k. My 2012 infiniti fx-35 fuel gauge stopped registering fuel levels about three weeks ago, and the warranty expired three months ago. I noticed the issue when starting the car in my garage. I contacted the infiniti dealer, and they mentioned that i would be responsible for the repair which would not be covered under warranty. The problem actually involves the fuel sending units, nissan pn 25060-1cb0c and 25060-1cb1c, which retail at approximately $130.00 each. Parts and labor are in excess of $600.00. I looked up some past nhtsa bulletins involving nissan fuel sending units and found the following nhtsa bulletins: 10v-074, 10v-075. All nissan vehicles, including infiniti, utilize the same design for their fuel sending units, which involve a floating arm with contacts that sweep across a contact array to register e-f. I contacted infiniti customer care who informed me that they could not offer any compensation toward fixing the problem. I then located a youtube video that showed the problem was with the contact array that becomes oxidized after a certain amount of time. I then fixed my problem by removing both fuel sending units from the gas tank, and cleaning the contact array on each using a cotton swab. This is clearly a faulty design, and nissan should issue a recall for all makes/models....01/04/17 *bf *tr

All doors will not lock or unlock. Nissan / infiniti has known about this issue since 2005 there are hundreds if not thousands of vehicles affected. I'm tired of going round and round with them to fix this safety issue. *tr
Front door locks intermittently work. Some times they will not unlock with the key fob and must use a key. Recently they have been locking by themselves as if the actuator fails.
*tr

*tr

*tr

This engine uses a metal timing chain inside the engine. Infinit chose to use plastic guides and tensors to keep the chain in place and not wear stretch. This choice of PLASTIC results in the eventual failure of the components that are needed to keep the chain in place. First signs of impending failure is a rattle inside the engine. Eventual the chain will break loose and destroy the engine. The parts themselves can be purchased at any auto parts store for under $50.00, however labor is in the thousands or engine complete failure. A simple search of the internet will show that nearly all owners experience this. Most opting to sell the vehicle or chance failure does not occur. My mechanic has confirmed and I will go to an Infiniti dealer if need be.

I was driving through an intersection at about 15/20 miles an hour as the light had just turned green & my car just shut down out of no where all the lights were on on the dash, and the car rolled to a stop. I turned the emergency lights on. I put the car in park and hit the start button again & the car started with no issues. This is the 3rd time it has happen the same way. Luckily the other 2 times i was driving through a parking lot and the vehicle just shuts down while accelerating & in drive mode. There are no warning lights on my vehicle for maintenance. Reading about this online it apparently happens a lot & to some people on the highway going 70 mph. This could be very dangerous!

Purchased a new 2003 infiniti fx35 which currently has 238,000 and properly maintained with the dealer recommended maintenance schedule. At 234,634 and frequently thereafter the vehicle when driving would just suddenly overheat and engine cooling system malfunction causing automobile to suddenly lose power and start to shut down while driving on major highways or roads. This is a very serious safety hazard and dangerous on highway when you driving at 65 mph. Very, very scary and just barely avoided several rear end collision. I am still trying to get the vehicle fixed and would like for this complaint to be recorded as with all the other listed fx35 complaints. *tr

The recall on the air bags has kept me from being able take my kids to their events, take prospects/clients out and when i called infinity of charlotte, nc-where i purchased the car they would not offer me a rental until fixed. Instead they offered to replace the air bag with the exact same model air bag. The service department rep said there was only a 1% chance the bags would deploy spraying shrapnel throughout the cabin. There have been 15 deaths already and i would never risk someone being killed or disfigured. I unfortunately don't have a rental car so i risk it everyday. Apparently the other models all got a replacement vehicle from enterprise rental car but not the 2003 fx35.
Driver's seat is loose and rocks back and forth. Infiniti has attempted to fix, but problem reoccurs. Feel if seat becomes loose enough this is a safety issue.*ak
Driver's seat rocks/clicks on it's track when coming to a complete stop. *ak
The seats on this and two other fx35's we own from infiniti "rock" back and forth while driving. The seat position is not stable. This is also widely reported with the g35 and infiniti cannot fix it. I believe it to be critically dangerous. The sway back to front is sudden and significant enough to jar the driver causing loss of control. My seat literally rocks about 1/3" back and forth like a rocking chair. We have another one that does exactly the same thing. In the snow i can imagine the sudden sway to be significant enough that a driver may lose control. I also wonder about crash durability. As you know any increased tolerance would allow an impact to cause more damage to the seat frame of the driver, possibly causing the seat to dislodge. *la

Takara recall l. Please replace this item by revocable company. I ask you to clarify what revocable campaigns are conducted for my car?
It used to be that the first initial brake driving in a 15-20 mph, that my vehicle makes a rattling noise from the front tires, now it does it for the first 2 to 3 braking pattern. I am just worried that after my warranty expires and the same problem arises, the dealer or the manufacturer won't have anything to do with the damages it might cause. I have taken my vehicle to the dealer several times to correct the braking problem it creates. A couple of months after the service, the same problem occur. The dealer keeps giving me analogies about a wine glass, water on your finger tips and running them over the tip of the glass....what has that got to do with the braking system of the car! After 3 months leasing the vehicle, the problem started to show but was fixed. The second incident was the worst. Wherein even backing up made the noise like the wheel would separate. This was remedied when the caliper was recalled. The third time i took the vehicle, the mechanic told me that it was the abs that makes the noise. I understand that abs applies in a sudden brake. But this whole incident happens even driving at 10-15 mph. Although, every couple of months, i still have to take my suv back to the dealer due to the same rattling noise. The service manager keeps on insisting that this is normal. This is not normal in any circumstance because it does not do to my friends vehicle, which has the same year and model as i have. Not to mention, when i took the vehicle for a 30,000 miles service. My regular mechanic for my other car noticed, that the cabin filter was missing. He also mentioned that the vehicle as if has not been serviced at all due to oil being so dirty. *jb
Brake failure. Rotors continually being cut. Dealer claims rear brakes "completely worn" at 19,900 miles, and front rotors again need to be cut. *jb
The brakes were defective. Dealer serviced the brakes several times, and the manufacturer stated that the problem will continue to exist because the parts being placed onto the vehicle were also defective. There was a constant squealing even when the brakes were not applied.*ak

- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
