How to read a Infiniti FX45 VIN — every digit explained
Every Infiniti FX45 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this FX45.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your FX45 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 infiniti fx45. The contact stated that during inclement weather, the drivers side headlights would fail. In addition, the contact stated that there was a crack on the front passenger side dashboard near the air bag. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 124,000.
Tl*- the contact has a complaint on a 2003 infinity fx45. The contact stated that the turn signal system on the vehicle could cause an accident since the bar also has the high beam/on and off head light switch at the end of the turn signal bar. The contact stated that when driving and making a left turn or right turn it is very easy to turn on the head lights off, which could cause an accident since the driver could lose visibility. This issue began on january 2007, and had occurred three times while driving on the road. The current mileage was 20,000.
I recently took delivery of a new infinity fx45. It now has about 600 miles on it. The headlights are aimed too low to illuminate the road ahead. Visibility is severely limited to about 2+ car lengths ahead. I cannot maintain minimal speed on an unlit highway, or when other cars are not traveling with me. The dealer states that the headlights are "within factor spec" and will do nothing to assist. He will not check it at night; nor will he check my car against others in the shop or on the dealership floor. The dealer adds that it is impossible to adjust these lights as there is no adjustment capability built into the headlight module. The dealer, pepe infinity, white plains, ny 10601, will no longer discuss the problem with me; nor has anyone contacted me to attempt to resolve the issue. If i cannot drive the car after dark, i want to get another car or have the problem fixed. Infinity usa says exactly the same thing. Their position is that if infinity released the car, it must meet all federal specifications, and will do nothing more. They did agree to let me visit another infinity dealer to "independently" check the headlights, but it will probably be at my own expense. In the meantime, the car is virtually undriveable at night unless driven in a lighted area and at low speeds. *nlm
Air Bags 5 Read
Vehicle experienced a minor grazing impact on both right side doors (in the middle of an intersection), which deployed the right side airbags and also the airbag inside the front passenger leather seat. After the accident, the window glass didn't break, the doors opened and closed normally. The safety issue is that when the airbags deployed, the engine died immediately, as if from an electrical failure, and the steering wheel pulled to the right and the driver (me) had no braking. The car veered to the right and coasted to a stop in a yard at the far end of the intersection. Afterwards, the car started normally and was drivable. Fortunately, there was no traffic or pedestrians, so nobody was injured. I called customer service at infiniti, and the representative checked with their technical people whether the airbags are intentionally designed to kill the engine on deployment, or whether this indicated a system malfunction. The customer representative reported back that infiniti tech support couldn't say, one way or the other, which struck me as an evasive response. The infiniti case number is [xxx]. I own a 2003 infinity fx45 awd. About june 2007 the steering wheel started to peel and breakdown and become sticky. So i put a wheel cover. Problem covered up. Thought nothing of it until about a month ago i noticed a crack on the dash in the corner by the speaker in the center of the dash. Then the next time i noticed a crack by the corner of the left dash speaker, then the next time the right dash speaker. Now i noticed a crack by the far right air conditioner vent on the dash. The dash is cracking apart in front of my eyes. I have a friend that has a 2006 with the same dash problem. They must have used inferior products for the dash and steering wheel. I use a sun reflector when parked and my wife parks under a covered garage. So its not like we did not try and prevent a problem. I have lived inflorida over 30 years and have never had a dash board crack. It is a shame because it is an excellent running car. I would think infinity would want to take care of what may be a large scale problem if other owners are notified. Thank you *tr

As an SUV, the Infiniti FX45 is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package, on a curb weight near 4,489 lb.
What sets your FX45's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
