How to read a Infiniti G20 VIN — every digit explained
Every Infiniti G20 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this G20.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your G20 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

All passengers complain of co2 related physical side effects. *ak
Abs brakes failed, resulting in a collision/injuries. Dealer also replaced master cylinder and engine motor mounts.
Was driving vehicle 60mph & had just checked rearview mirror. Noticed flames dropping from underneath vehicle. Vehicle then filled with black smoke. Pulled vehicle to side & left it. Vehicle then blew up. Fire dept arrived & extinguished the flames. Had indicated the problem originated from the engine. Vehicle was totaled. *ak

Sulpher smell inside car: the dealer tried to fix the problem but could not. Eventually the smell went away by itself, or what ever smelled like sulphur while it was burning finally burnt up.*ak here is a list of other repairs the dealer has made: new altinator new weather striping on driver side door-now its coming off again new regulator for window on driver side door new motor mounts new linkage under for the transmission- couldn't remove key from ignition unless the gear shifter was being pushed forward at the same time. New pocket for the back of the passenger seat engine noise or rattle- installed bolts somewhere around the exhaust manifold. The dealer said that the manufactur ran out of those bolts during assembly, and thinking they were not nessisary, sold my car as well as others without those bolts. Replaced the bolts for the heat shield or the exhaust manifold. After more than six trips back to the dealership they put a new ac compressor on that quieted the noise for a few days, but the noise is back. I have since quit driving this car until i figure out what to do. The incident date is not accurate because i don't have any of the repair orders infront of me.
There is a sulphur smell inside of vehicle at all times. Vehicle has been taken to dealer 3 times, cannot remedy the problem.*ak
Consumer states for the past 2 years there has been an ongoing problem with a rotten egg/sulfur smell coming out of the exhaust, consumer has taken vehicle to the dealership at least 3 times to try and get the problem resolved, consumer has been told that the wrong type of gas was being used, that there was no smell, that a particular part in the vehicle could not be replaced only adjusted, consumer even had an update performed on the vehicle, however the problem still exists. *jb nar 8/22/02. *scc *cb jb
Sulfur/eggy smell coming from exhaust system. Vehicle taken to dealership on numerous occassions (4 times) with no resolution. Complaints filed with bbb, and infiniti customer service. I want the problem fixed or i want to use the lemon law and get my money back. A letter was also sent to the nhtsa.*ak
Motor mounts that fail at under 60,000 miles are definitely a hazard, and manufacturer refuses to replace under warranty. *ak
Power Train 14 Read
I had the brakes applied on my car, and put it in reverse in order to correctly position the car in a parking space. With my foot still on the brakes, because i was only moving the car a few feet, the tachometer took off like crazy, the engine reved up and the car starting inching backwards even though i still had my foot on the brakes. I almost was going to hit the parked car in back of me so i slammed the (automati) gear into park. Only then did the engine stop revving and the car stop. I turned the ignition off and came in to work and tried to calm down because i was very frightened. This also happened two weeks ago, while i was in drive, with my foot on the brake. The engine started revving and moving forward. At the time, i thought this was because i may have been on black ice.*cn
We were sold a lemon vehicle from evans motors located at 112 w st john st, girard ks by eddie walsh. We have had the vehicle now for a little over 1 month. The back brakes went out, the front brakes went out as my son was driving the vehicle and the brake pads went flying. That same day we found out that the transmission was bad and needed to be replaced and would cost around $1000 to $3000 to be fixed. Evans motors has yet to even attempt to help fix this issue. They informed us that we bought the vehicle and it is now our problem not theirs. My son is a college student with an infant 2 month old son and he needs a dependable vehicle to transport his son in, to go to school and work. I want someone to help me with the issue at hand. *tr
Transmission failure. Automobile well maintained prior to incident. *jb
Automatic transmission failure on my 1995 infiniti g20. The failure occurred without warning. Vehicle has been properly maintained. I wrote the infiniti consumer affairs divisions but was informed they do not keep records of how many transmission failure occurred for this model and if they did they would not release the information. I would like to find out if this transmission failure is a systemic defect for this year and make of car.*ak
The first report has to do with the clutch system. At 35,000 miles on routine inspection my dealer informed me that clutch cylinder near the clutch pedal was seizing and causing an annoying squeak. It turns out the that failure of this cylinder caused the pressure plate to not release from the clutch plate as it normally should when takeing the foot off the clutch pedal. This caused the clutch disk/plate to excessively wear to the point it needed replacing. My vehicle now has 59,000 miles and the cylinder near the clutch pedal is squeeking again... Making me think it is failing again. I don't think it is normal for me to replace this part at my expense every 30,000 miles. I think this is a poorly designed part and think that infinity/nissan should find a replacement part that does not fail so often. The cost to me to replace this everytime the cylinder fails is in the area of $800.00. The cost involves the cylinder needing replacement and well as the teardown of the tranmission system to replace the clutch disk/plate.*ak

We have been having problems with this transmission. It keeps poping out of 5th gear at highway speeds. This is not only nerve racking but dangerious. Now that i am trying to sell car and disclosing this no one wants it. But today was a call from a buyer who first asked, " does the car pop out in 5th gear" i said yes and he went into that this is an inherant problem in the design of nisson and infinity manual transmissions. Went on that this is happening wide spread relative to the number of their cars with mannual transmission and there should be a recall. He believes it is a desgine fault and not somethine due to normal wear, i agree.*ak
Vehicle was vibrating. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said all engine mounts and transmission mounts were torn up, dealer replacecd mounts. *ak

Vehicle involved in an accident by hitting a deer at approimately. 60 mph. At impact, th driver's seat belt unlatched ,and air bag did not deploy, causing back injury to driver. *ak
Both rear seat belts lock around the occupants extremely tight within 0-10 mintues, trapping occupants in the seats. This happens while vehicle is moving, and when the vehicle is not moving. Dealership/manufacturer have been told about the seat belt problem numerous times. Solution given defeats the purpose of the seat belt. *ak the solution by the dealer is to unhooking the seat belts, slowly lefting them retract and rehooking them. *yh *slc
When my daughter went to buckle her seatbelt in the back seat of my car, the buckle wouldn't latch. I tried it, too--the metal piece slid into the other part without latching. Then it'd latch; next try it wouldn't. I couldn't trust the seatbelt, so we couldn't let the children ride in that car any longer. Thankfully the seatbelt failed when we were buckling the child in the car in the driveway heading out--and not during an accident, or on the way home. I'm mad that the seatbelt could fail without warning like that. How can i trust that the seatbelt will work properly when it's needed???!! I called the manufacturer and they confirmed a lifetime warranty on the seatbelt. 11/26 i took the car to the dealer and they replaced the seatbelt mechanism under warranty and checked the function of the other seatbelts. I'm satisfied that they've fixed it... But still concerned if the other seatbelts will fail without my knowing, and concerned about all the other cars of my make/model out there, whose seatbelts may have failed and parents don't yet know it. *tr

My daughter was involved in a car accident, she was on the freeway going 65 mph when the speed limit was 75 mph. She was driving a 1994 infiniti g20. Tl* the contact owns a 2002 infiniti g20. While operating the vehicle, the air bag sensor remained activated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the air bag sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 140,000.
The passenger side airbag warning light began flashing ongoing right after the car's warranty expired at 60,000. Upon researching it was determined that a faulty airbag sensor was to blame on this 6 year old car and that since car was no longer under warranty that it would cost over $1,000 to replace this faulty sensor. Most manufacturers indicate that the life of their airbag equipment is between 10-15 years. Mercedes-benz originally stated the airbag should be replaced during normal service at the customer?s cost after fifteen years but both mercedes-benz and audi now say the units should last the life of the vehicle and infiniti is unwilling to stand behind their product after only 6 years. *tr

This is a new car and supposed to be under warranty. The a/c would not work when turned on this yr. Took it to dealer and was told a rock hit the condenser and put a hole in it. Was told that that is not covered by the warranty. First of all, if it only takes a rock to put a hole in the condenser, that is definantly a design flaw. Rocks are everywhere on the hiways. If this vehicle is this badly damaged by normal road conditions then the manufacture should have placed some kind of shield over these critical components.*ak

When applying brakes there is a screeching sound. Dealer found front rotors glazed over, cleaned and lubricated rotors. Then on 7 june 2001, vehicle was taken back to dealer due to screeching noise.
