How to read a Infiniti M37 VIN — every digit explained

Every Infiniti M37 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this M37.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your M37 VIN

I was trying to accelerate from off an on ramp onto a highway and the car completely hesitated. The transmission took a good two seconds to accelerate and get into a safe position to pass, when i was struck from behind by a car in the slow lane. I have made a complaint before about this same issue and something needs to be done. I have already sent my car to the dealership and they reset the tcm, but it did nothing. Please get back to me at [xxx] or [xxx]. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). Thanks *tr

2011 M37

im the dealer sold my the car or maker uncertain problem

2013 M37

When i accelerate the vehicle doesn't speed up and sometimes it hesitates. This is dangerous especially when entering the freeway it takes a while after i accelerate for the car to get up to speed. Seems like a transmission issue. Infiniti needs a recall. I know several people with this car and have the same issue.

2013 M37

The car won't accelerate when pressing the gas and also will jerk and jump when shifting. It's very dangerous when driving on the expressway because the car won't accelerate, but sometimes will take off on it's own even when i press the brake. This is definitely a transmission problem which i've heard before on several occasions about this particular car. Also, 2 lights stay on on my dash when these things are happening.

2013 M37

While driving the car would not accelerate and the transmission was hesitating severely when pushing on the accelerator. Problem continued until the car had no power and the engine shutdown without any dashboard gauge warnings in the middle of traffic, during rush hour. I placed it in neutral prior to complete shutdown. Cut off ignition and restarted ignition and car started as normal. Tried to drive but after five minutes began to shut down again. Per the dealer defect has something to do with the fuel injection sensors. This could have been a catastrophic event. *tr

2012 M37

I notice when i brought this car at 47,000 miles used the car was lack of power and hesitated to go when trying to pass other car ..i thought it was just software problems but it happened the 2nd time , but this time almost cost the accident, when i was going to make a left turn the hesitated for about 6to9second delay befor it take off was close of other car hitting me

2012 M37

Total lack of acceleration when passing. There is a 2-3 second delay prior to the downshift and i'm never sure when the acceleration will take place. This problem occurs from 50mph and up. I have had this problem since i purchased the car and it has not changed over time. Infinity reprogrammed the ecm and no improvement was noted. I gave up on their service support. Thanks

2012 M37

Have owned the car slightly over a year. Since the beginning the transmission has shifted erratically, is in 4th gear at 25 mph. When stepping on gas the car hesitates while trying to pick a gear. There is no power at low speeds because the car is in too high a gear. At higher speeds if you touch the brakes the car drops two or three gears causing the car to shake violently from the downshift. The engine knocks constantly at low speeds due to the gearing even though premium fuel is required. Dealer has tried to repair and applied software patch that took almost a year to receive but no help. Dealership says nothing can be done. From research and other nhtsa complaints this is a common problem. Tried to get infiniti to repurchase but they refuse to stand behind car, say it's "within specs". Car is unsafe because of severe downshift compression at higher speed, no power and severe hesitation at lower speeds. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 infiniti m37. The contact stated that the transmission hesitated and exhibited a loud bang when shifting. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and the vehicle was test driven. The dealer re-programmed the transmission control module and the engine control module. The contact stated that the vehicle performed well for a while but the failure soon recurred. The vehicle had not been taken back to the dealer. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and was told that there was a design flaw within the vehicle but a remedy was not yet available. The failure mileage was 7,473 and the current mileage was unknown.

2012 M37

Experienced very slow accelerator response since vehicle was brand new. Now in addition to that the car is having horrible problems while braking, transmission bangs out of gear, the car also drops multiple gears at once which causes a very high rev of engine. It feels so rough it makes it feel like you've been hit from behind. This car feels very unsafe to drive. There must be faulty transmissions or software here. *tr

Steering 27% 22 Read
2012 M37

When the steering wheel is adjusted up, down or the telescopic adjustment is used a loud pop is heard, the casing comes apart and it is no longer possible to turn the wheel left or right.

2013 M37

Vehicle 4was light is on. While driving after making a turn the steering wheel un-aligns itself so when you look at it it's as if the car is unaligned. It then aligns itself at some point upon another turn. I did research after reading there has been many infinity recalls for steering issues. I am highly concerned i may get into an accident due to this manufacture issue. How can i get assistance to get this fixed?

2013 M37

I own a 2013 infiniti awd m37xs that i feel is unsafe because of a steering issue or something. The vehicle continually veers from side to side unless the road travelled is perfectly flat without any imperfections and it is not often a road is flat without imperfections.. I have to continual course corrections and it is very easy to overcompensate the steering, which could potentially lead to veering off the road especially if the road is a narrow track/country road, crashing and or crashing into another vehicle. I use to live in nc and md and to be honest, i cannot imagine driving this car in ice or snow. This vehicle is hard to control making it unsafe. I've sent my concerns to baker infiniti in charleston, sc late yesterday evening after returning from a road trip and feared for my life. I've complained about this issue before but was told by one of the technicians at baker infiniti that it was the way the tires hit the road. New tires and an alignment will not correct this problem, therefore i believe this is a true problem and is potentially being ignored by infiniti or you are unaware. I find it hard to believe that i am the only m owner whom have experienced this dangerous and life threatening issue. I see there was a recall on 2014-2016 infiniti q50 & q50 hybrid. I strongly believe the 2013 has the same issue or something similar. Bottom, there is a major problem. Please let me know, what i need to do. I have notified the dealership as well as infiniti corporation.

2013 M37

The steering wheel housing came off track/separated and i cannot use the steering wheel without it being in a raised manner so the housing wont rub against the steering wheel. The car is out of manuf warranty by years not mileage. (4 yr 60k). I see other complaints online and dealer will not honor the obvious design defect.

2013 M37

While driving my car on the van wyck expressway and the queensborough bridge in nyc, i noticed that the car steering started pulling and i momentarily lost control of the vehicle for 2-3 seconds. It was if the car started following the change in pavement or the grooves in the road. I was terrified to the point where i had to reduce my speed from 50mph to 25mph and i switched to the outer lanes. Years ago in my 20's i noticed this with my brothers g35, but since i was a new driver i just assumed that since it was a fast car, maybe i couldn't handle it. But as i am now in my 30's and have over 12 years of driving experience behind me, compared with driving chrysler 300's, altima's, jetta's, passenger vans for work, etc. I am beginning to think that this may be an infiniti flaw. It would be really great if someone could look into this. My car has low mileage and the dealer has provided me with the service record and show me the new tires.

2013 M37

Shortly after purchasing my m37, i found it difficult to steer on the road. I started doing some investigation on the internet and found a concept called "tramlining" that other m infiniti owners were experiencing and which described what i was experiencing. I don't feel there is a certain speed that triggers the condition. You really have to hold on to the steering wheel to control the car. I took the car back to the infiniti dealer to have it checked out and explained the concept of "tramlining". The dealer said it was the road and how the m37's wheels tend to fall into the curves and a bunch of other blah, blah blah stuff. They found nothing wrong with the steering or the wheels. But i have driven other cars and have never had such a steering control problem. It can be quite scary at times, when the road is not totally smooth. I feel infiniti knows about this problem with the m, but don't want to do anything about it. *tr

2012 M37

When the steering wheel is adjusted to a normal setting the casing pops and it becomes very difficult to turn the wheel.

2012 M37

I purchased my car used with aprox 45,000. Miles on the odometer, i test drove it & it ran & handled perfect. As soon as i took the car home i brought it to my mechanic to check it out, i got the oil & filters changed & car inspection, all was good. I owned the car for 3 years & maintained it regularly. One morning i started it up & it started popping & jumping (the day before it had run perfectly) & my check engine light was flashing. At this time there was approx 65,000. Miles on the odometer, there was less than 1000 miles since my last oil change. I took it to my mechanic & they told me there was no oil in it..the oil was completely gone. There was no oil spots in my driveway at all we couldn't understand where the oil could have gone in less than 1000 miles since my last oil change. The mechanics filled it with oil, i drove it only locally a few weeks & when i checked it again the oil was gone..with no oil stains in my driveway. I called infinity, they towed it to infinity dealership in nj, the dealership told me it was due to neglecting to have the oil changed & i needed a new motor which cost approx $12,000. I told them i have receipts of the oil changes & they said then it was neglected prior to my owning it which i cannot understand how that could be after owning the car for over 3 years without a problem, they then accused me of neglecting the car because i didn't bring it to them for maintenance. No one i spoke to can understand how it could run completely out of oil in less than 1000 miles & it didn't start running bad gradually it literally happened overnight. One mechanics i spoke to said it may be a defect to look up recalls, i saw a similar issue on some model infinities but my car was not included in the recall. I now have less than 69,000. Miles on an infinity which needs a new motor that costs more than the car value.

2012 M37

I'd like to report a problem that has occurred with my 2012 infiniti m37 which seems to be pretty fatal. The plastic cover that covers the steering wheel's rod cracks open when the steering wheel is tilted to a lower position. Once the cover is cracked, steering wheel rubs on to the plastic behind it and makes the steering wheel nearly impossible to steer. If someone faced this issue by changing their steering wheel position while driving, it will surely lead to a fatal accident. This issue seems to happen to other vehicles as well according to the forum link attached: http://forums.nicoclub.com/steering-wheel-rubbing-plastic-housing-t609452.html i have tried to contact infiniti regarding this issue and the answer i received was that there's nothing they could do since i am out of warranty. However, that part of the vehicle is barely used nor touched which makes this a manufacturing defect but no one wants to be responsible for this. Since this is a safety related issue i'd like to ask nhtsa to get involved and help us out on this matter. Thank you very much and i will await for your response.

2012 M37

When entering & exiting the car the steering wheel will adjust. We started noticing a noise and then it made a loud pop. I noticed that the plastic housing around the column was in a bind. I moved the steering wheel up to be able to steer. This is ridiculous on this type of car. I've read many complaints with the same problem and not there is no recall??? Is there a recall or not? Can this be fixed reasonably?

Air Bags 18% 15 Read
2011 M37

2011 infiniti m37. Consumer writes in regards to air bag malfunction and engine not starting. *smd the consumer stated the air bags did not deploy during an accident, in which the repair bill was in excess of $20,000. The consumer also stated the brakes were a constant problem.

2013 M37

In December, 2022, the airbag warning light activated. AT a cost to us of over $1500, the Infiniti dealer replaced the failed sensor. What we did not know is that this did not fix the problem and the air bag on the passenger side would never have deployed in the event of an accident. In November, 2023, the airbag warning light again activated. It turns out that the seat assembly had actually failed of which we were unaware. This is a very expensive repair to a part that should never have failed in the first place. After significant discussions with Infiniti, they did decide to cover the cost of the seat assembly itself but not the labor to install it (another $800). At this time, we are still unclear as to whether this will actually solve the problem. Aside from a very expensive repair to a part which never should have failed (especially since the car is very lightly driven) we were and are very concerned that this could have resulted in a very serious injury in the event of a vehicle crash. We consider the discussions with Inifiniti to be unsatisfactory with respect to the whole incident.

2013 M37

The airbag control module failed on this car which has under 25000 miles on it. The airbag would not have deployed if the car was in an accident and insurance claims would have been void so we had no choice but to immediately replace the module at a cost of over $2,000. The dealer inspected and confirmed that this was the case (and also that they have seen it happen on other Infinity's). The warning light was the first indication of the problem and we immediately took it to the dealer who replaced it. We can understand mechanical failures in an older car but it seems ridiculous that this vital piece of safety equipment would fail on a car with very low mileage and we have never had a car where the airbag system failed.

2013 M37

2013 infinitym37s passenger air bag sensor malfunction, apparently shutting off passenger side air bag. This is a safety concern and the nhtsa should make nissan/ infinity make correction to this sensor, before many owners of these vehicle family are killed or severely injured.

2013 M37

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 infiniti m37. The contact stated that the passenger side air bag warning indicator illuminated continuously. The failure recurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the air bag had not been designed or installed properly. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The failure mileage was 8,000.

2012 M37

The front passenger airbag warning light came on with a dash warning flashing light. I isolated the fault to the passenger seat weight sensor, which prevents the airbag from deploying when a passenger of less than 90 pounds is sensed in the front seat. The time from the onset of the warning light to discovery of the actual fault was less than a week and this was facilitated by a mechanic with a sophisticated enough OBD reader to flesh out Infiniti codes. I called my local Infiniti dealer in Tacoma, WA and they were able to supply a part number but it has been discontinued for the 2011-2013 Infiniti M37 models. Without this sensor working, the passenger airbag may not deploy in the event of a collision, and that is unsatisfactory/downright unacceptable. These cars will operate for 20 plus years and are otherwise engineered to last 200/000 miles. I have 90,000 miles on the odometer and the car is otherwise in great shape, but I may be forced to scrap it if I can't resolve the weight sensor malfunction.

2012 M37

The contact owns a 2012 Infiniti M37. The contact stated that the front passenger's side air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact was quoted a diagnostic fee and declined to pay the fee. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

2012 M37

Passenger Air Bag Sensor Failed. Concerned Passenger Airbag will not deploy when passengers are in the car. This is a Very Known and Problematic issue with Infiniti and Infiniti will not address this critical safety issue. Infiniti says repairs would be the owner responsibility and cost in excess of $8,000. This is a critical safety issue and needs to be addressed by Infiniti before someone gets hurt.

2012 M37

airbag light blinks. We tried the reset and it worked until someone sat in the seat. Called dealer and they said the seat bottom needs replacing as it’s a occupancy sensor. Cost for part + labor = 5K .. Totally outrageous. safety issue

2012 M37

The front passenger airbag light went on in my 2012 infiniti m-37 upon starting it the morning of 10/09/2020. I brought it into my local tampa infiniti dealership on 10/21/2020 where i purchased the car and have had over 90% of the servicing completed. My service advisor michael english explained to me that it would cost over $7104 to replace the bottom of the front passenger seat. In addition a diagnostic sensor would likely need to be replaced at a cost of $450. He also told me that this problem is one that occurs in a number of infiniti automobiles of this type. He was sorry that it was not covered by any warranty and that it didn't seem fair that a recall wasn't available to remedy the safety problem. My car has only 120,000 miles on it and runs very well and is worth about $8000 as a trade in but not with a faulty passenger seat safety hazard. I can't afford to fix this problem that cost nearly as much the car is worth. How could infiniti make or design a seat with air bag sensors that cant be repaired without having to replace the entire seat? This is the result of poor engineering and is a product safety hazard forcing many consumers to choose between having safety equipment or doing without because of the high expense to repair. I've never had an accident to deploy the airbags and my car has always been garage kept and properly maintained. This is a manufacturer defect and there should be a remedy for all those owners of this type of vehicle. I have noticed there are many owners of similar infiniti vehicles that have had a similar problem.

9/25/2012-i am having some severe issues with the brakes on the m37. Yesterday i just avoided an accident with the back end of a ups truck as the car would not stop. This is the third time that something like this has happened with the brakes. Each time it has been while traveling above 50 mph and trying to stop quickly. The reaction of the car is similar to that of an anti-lock brake system when you are on wet or icy roads. However, the roads have been perfectly dry and the sun is shining. When trying to use the brake to decelerate the pedal will pulsate and the engine rpm will increase significantly. Basically the car drives through the driver's command to stop. Last night it was so bad that i had to swerve into the oncoming lane because it would not stop in time to prevent me from rear-ending the ups truck. I am a very sound driver that does not tail gate and this car has done this now 3 times. The other two times i was trying to avoid animals that shot out in front of me. I see that this has been a known problem on several model year cars for infiniti. *tr

Passenger airbag sensor has failed and the dealer has quoted me a price of $7019 to repair it, saying the seat has to be replaced. The cost is exorbitant, and approaches to he total value of the car. This is a defect of the part and the manufacturing process that consumers should not have to bare.

2011 M37

After 3 days parking in garage, the battery was drained. We hooked up a battery charger. The dashboard lights flashed a few times and then the electrical system completely shut down. The car went totally dead. None of the buttons was working, not even the trunk lid. Similar situation happened before, but the car was able to start by jumping. We will contact the dealer today. There must be some design or manufacturing faults. Infinity should provide answers and take remedial actions. *tr

On thursday, august 15, i was in camarillo for a haircut appointment. It was 11:25 and my appointment was at 11:40. I was already in the parking space, moving at a slow speed and was approximately 6 ft. From the raised concrete curb at the end of the parking space. Suddenly the car began to accelerate and i observed smoke from the tires. I later saw this was caused by the tires digging into the asphalt. During the sudden, unintended acceleration i kept wondering how i was going to stop the car. Fortunately there was a sturdy tree that stopped the car before crossing the road into traffic. When the car hit the tree the airbag deployed and my only damage was a severely bruised chest and a burnt arm from the gases expelled by the airbag. I saw the car hit the tree, saw the airbag deploy and felt a sense of relief that the car was finally stopped. Since i had so few feet left to drive before i parked the car there is no way that i would have stomped on the gas hard enough to cause the tires to burn out, leaving gouge marks in the asphalt.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 infiniti m37. The contact stated that the hook that held the floor mat in place on the driver's side was not stable. The floor mat became loose and caused the vehicle to accelerate erroneously, resulting in a crash. A police report was filed and no injuries were sustained. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The current and failure mileage was 8,000. Updated 10/7/14*cn the consumer stated the vehicle was eventually repaired at the cost of about 15,000.

*tr

I have several issues. The steering wheel peels. I have a cracked driver's side leather interior door. The car started jerking really bad on a city street, i couldn't go over 35 mph. My 4was motor has gone bad! Infiniti dealership, cannot explain what would have caused the motor, to go bad. All of the car's safety features, are connected to this 4was motor. So, when that 4was light comes on, all of the safety features are turned off. This includes: intelligent cruise control, 4was, blind spot detection, lane departure, stability control, and sport mode! The cost is $8500! I purchased this car in 2011.

2011 M37

Hesitating/jerking. Unable to accelerate past 44-45 mph, 2400 rpm. Had to move from the far left lane across 4 lanes shoulder was driving on a city main rd and the front passenger side axle slipped out fo socket and and caused my car to be inoperable

2011 M37

Traveling on i95, minimally slippery conditions (snow), car suddenly starts hesitating/jerking. Unable to accelerate past 44-45 mph, 2400 rpm. Had to move from the far left lane across 4 lanes shoulder. Apparently vehicle entered "failsafe" mode. Took to dealer later in the day, at which point the vehicle worked normally. Dealer (jba infiniti) said "carbon buildup." no other defects found. Charged approximately $325. One or two weeks later, the same thing happened. Problem obviously computer issue. This is dangerous, similar to gm incidents when problem occurs on high-speed roadway without warning. *tr

About 2 weeks ago my 4was and traction light came on while driving under 35 mph in my subdivision in a straight line and nothing seems to fix it, now on wet roads car feels loose in the rear. I have heard lots of complaints about this system and feel it is a safety concern and should be a recall. Thanks

*tr

4was and stability control warning lights stay on while driving the car. The rear of the car is very unstable, sways, jerks and steering wheel is off-center.the steering wheel is never centered and drifts in one direction with a new alignmnet. Infiniti has recommended replacing the hicas actuator. This has not resolved the problem for infiniti owners and are then recommended to replace the 4was control box. Replacing the control box also does not resolve the issue. I have read and joined a nissan/infiniti forum where owners that have this exact problem have followed the recommendation from the nissan and infiniti dealership and still have the warning lights on. I contacted infiniti corporate offices for further information, but was informed they do not track this type of information. The 4was and stability control warning lights issue is happening to both nissan and infiniti models and throughout various years. The concern is that infiniti's recommendation it to replace the hicas actuator and spend $6k (part cost $5,500 and labor $400, but that does not resolve the problem. According to the information i have found, infiniti is not accurately diagnosing the problem. I have been i near catastrafic incidents due to this wide spread infiniti sport owners issue.

I was disappointed with my 2012 infiniti m37x purchased on 1/3/2012 at infiniti. My safety was put at risk with this vehicle. I took delivery of my new m37x on the night of 1/4/2012. Upon delivery, i drove at highway speeds(65 mph). The car was vibrating constantly, and i felt the vibrations prominently through the steering wheel. Within twelve hours of delivery, i contacted infiniti about the safety issues via email and telephone. On 1/5/2012, i brought the vehicle to the service department at infiniti. Infiniti diagnosed the vehicle and discovered two defective tires/wheels. I feel that my safety has been placed in jeopardy with this infiniti vehicle. My minimum expectation from infiniti is the delivery of a safe vehicle. *tr
