How to read a Infiniti M56 VIN — every digit explained

Every Infiniti M56 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this M56.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your M56 VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

The contact owns a 2011 Infiniti M56. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V755000 (Power Train) however, the dealer informed the contact that the parts for the recall repair were not yet available. The contact stated that while making a left turn from a complete stop, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle drove 2 MPH and stalled. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that as he released the accelerator pedal and depressed it again, he was able to drive the vehicle. The dealer was notified of the failure. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and advised the contact that they would follow up with the dealer. The contact was awaiting a call back from the manufacturer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

I love this vehicle but it's suddenly started having a rough idle and with a scan tool detects multiple misfires and several codes due to timing, in which case the timing chain has been worn out call the dealership to see if the timing chain recall for the m56 was done to my car they said it was VIN specific now I am stuck with a vehicle that is very dangerous to be driven.

Driveshaft malfunctioning. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Driveshaft malfunctioning is causing the vehicle to shake violently at speeds above 60 mph. My safety and others safety is put at risk when I'm accelerating above 60 mph and the vehicle begins to shake violently causing the vehicle to veering into on coming traffic or nearby lanes. This problem has been reproduced and confirmed by an independent service center. The vehicle hasn't been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This problem first appeared about 4 years ago but progressively gotten worse. In December 13, 2020 — An Infiniti driveshaft recall includes more than 2,700 vehicles with driveshafts that may break. The recalled vehicles include 2011-2013 Infiniti M56, 2012-2013 M35 Hybrid, 2014 Q70 and 2014 Infiniti Q70 Hybrid vehicles. Unfortunately, my vehicle wasn't included in this recall and it yet should.

2011 M56

I started the car up and started to drive to work about 3 miles into driving the check engine light came on followed by revs with no power or speed gain and the vehicle was giving me around 15mph to the point where i couldn't gain much more speed and had to pull off the road. There was a voluntary service campaign for the timing chain but it has since expired and now i am stuck with the repairs.

2011 M56

Driving this car is very fun and i have enjoyed the car very much but just last week i noticed a smell like burning rubber or oil, come to find out the next day i was dripping oil only not a steady drip but a drip only from driving, once i stop and the car cools the drip stops. I have research and found that there could be a problem with some bolts to the oil filter that attaches to the block but when i called infiniti they don't see it nor will they look at the car unless i pay. This isn't a seal or gasket this is a very bad leak, my research came from a 2012 long term road test on a 2011 infiniti m56 and states this will become a recall but never did? *tr

2011 M56

We have been trying to resolve this problem through infiniti service center since we bought the car 10 months ago with only 28k miles. The vehicle has severe hesitation when attempting to accelerate immediately after slowing or stopping. On several occasions when stepping on the gas to make a left or right turn into traffic from a complete stop, the vehicle hesitates for approximately 2 seconds, and then jerks suddenly and goes. I have had several near misses from oncoming traffic as a result of this with my child in the car!! Also, while in automatic drive the vehicle repeatedly will not go into gear when removing foot from brake to accelerator, but instead rolls backward (similar to a manual transmission) forcing me to immediately hit the brake pedal to prevent collision into vehicles behind me. The dangers of this vehicle are a liability on my part in the event that it causes me to have an accident because the t when turning into oncoming traffic. The vehicle is under warranty but service center has not resolved the problem. They have reset the computer but the issues just return. Infiniti will be facing serious lawsuits from death or injury if this transmission or computer issue is not repaired soon. Completely ridiculous that my $40000 vehicle must remain parked for extended periods because i am too scared to drive it for fear of it causing a serious accident. I am hoping for a recall as this seems to be a major issue for the m series. *tr

2011 M56

I have noticed problems on multiple occasions with my m37 not accelerating when i hit the gas. While getting over into another lane to pass a vehicle my car stalled for a few seconds while trying to accelerate and i was almost rear ended by another car. Two months ago i went to accelerate on the freeway and the engine just revved up until i took my foot off the gas. My mom was in the car and she agreed that this is not normal! On two occasions i have also noticed while coming to a stop my car would jump forward but thought it was me until i saw other posts regarding this. And yes i have discussed this with our infiniti dealer and they can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I have driven many cars and have never experienced issues like these. *tr

2011 M56

I have concerning issues with the transmission of this vehicle since purchase 8/27/2010. The transmission has major hesitation when accelerating, slowing down and with everday use(jerky feeling in city traffic) no matter what drive mode is used i.e sport, normal, eco, snow modes. Whether you pull out to pass on the freeway or,pass bicycle on a narrow 2 lane road, at residential speeds, the transmission hesitates dramatically(2-5 seconds),actually to the point i don't feel safe with this vehicle. I have taken the vehicle back to the dealer 4+ times to address this issue, contacted infiniti consumer affairs, and was told by all, that it was "normal" operation.... Which it is not!!! *tt

My 2012 infiniti m56 is having the same issues as the recall number 11v592000 my car is currently at an infiniti dealership. It was noted that it was low on oil and the fusible link was destroyed to prevent the engine from seizing up. My life was put endanger as my car shut off at the red light intersection. Some of the bolts that connect the engine oil cooler and the engine oil filter to the engine in these vehicles may have been manufactured to below specification strength. As a result, the bolt may break at the oil filter attachment point and can cause an engine oil leak. Recall 11v592000 consequence if there is an engine oil leak, the engine oil pressure would drop and the engine could seize, increasing the risk of a crash. Car

2012 M56

I was at a complete stop at a intersection in my 2012 infiniti m56x. Upon acceleration the car started to hesitate and jerk forward (the check engine light came on) as i was pushing on the gas pedal. The car barely crept through the intersection and i made it to a parking lot. I put the car in park and pushed on the accelerator the engine was loosing power and skipping real bad. I had to have the car towed to the dealer because it was not drivable. The dealer said that the cam sensors were bad. The sensors were all replaced but the problem continued. After 4 months in the shop trying to figure out the problem and replacing numerous of parts the problem seemed to have gotten better however, now after the repairs the car now hesitates from a full stop and jerks forward after initial acceleration. The engine seems to loose power sometimes while accelerating while driving. *tr

My solenoid switch went bad on me and needed to be replaced, took it to the infiniti dealership and they corrected the problem so i thought until oct 13 when i kept hearing this noise coming from my hook like a squealing noise.. Took it back to the dealership and found out it was the timing chain, which i was told had nothing to do with the solenoid switch that was previously fixed.. Found out that was a lie and that they go hand in hand with each other and they wanted to charge me 1400 dollars just to look at the problem and another 2,000 to fix the issue, well it turns out that infiniti already knew that this was a problem with the solenoid being to small to pump the required old to where its suppose to go and never did a recall or anything but they are trying to say if its out of warranty than they are not required to fix it, this is a safety hazard if not replaced by infiniti this will cause the solenoid switch to go bad then the timing chain, and then your engine will blow up on you.. This should be a recall issue for infiniti to fix because this will be very costly to someone and it shouldn't be... *tr

Issue: passenger seat belt light continues to remain on after the passenger is no longer sitting on the seat. Root cause from dealer: defective passenger occupancy sensor. Only way to turn off the seat belt light is to either put the passenger seat belt on or turn on and off the car. I noticed when i purchased the infiniti 2011 m56 the seat belt light would remain on after a passenger has been sitting on the passenger front seat and exits the vehicle. The passenger just needs to sit on the passenger side for a few minutes to exhibit this problem. This is a safety concern as i don't know if the airbag will deploy properly as the occupancy sensor is falsely triggering a passenger is sitting in the passenger side. The airbag light indicator will sometimes be on or off when the seat belt light comes on. After taking the car back and forth on multiple occasions and to multiple infiniti dealerships, was finally able to to get to the problem. One of the dealership was finally able to conclude it was due to the front passenger occupancy sensor. Even had an infiniti engineer from the norther ca region confirm the issue was indeed due to the occupancy sensor. This issue was first reported when under the original warranty however infiniti and infiniti consumer affairs will not honor the original warranty. Also i have the extended warranty just for this purpose however this part is not covered.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 infiniti m56. When the steering wheel was lowered to be adjusted at a certain degree, it seized or became difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. 4was and stability control warning lights come on when driving over rough asphalt, or turning right or left and road is rough. The rear of the car feels unstable and steering wheel is off-center. The lights are on until the car is turned off. When the car is turned on again and before the warning symbols come back on, the steering wheel is centered and car drives fine. Infiniti has recommended replacing the hicas actuator. This has not resolved the problem for infiniti owners and are then recommended to replace the 4was control box. Replacing the control box also does not resolve the issue. I have read and joined a nissan/infiniti forum where owners that have this exact problem have followed the recommendation from the nissan and infiniti dealership and still have the warning lights on. I contacted infiniti corporate offices for further information, but was informed they do not track this type of information. The 4was and stability control warning lights issue is happening to both nissan and infiniti models and throughout various years. The concern is that infiniti's recommendation it to replace the hicas actuator and spend $6k (part cost $5,500 and labor $400, but that does not resolve the problem. According to the information i have found, infiniti is not accurately diagnosing the problem.

This issue was first reported when under the original warranty however infiniti and infiniti consumer affairs will not honor the original warranty. Also i have the extended warranty just for this purpose however this part is not covered.

I was disappointed with my 2012 infiniti m37x purchased on 1/3/2012 at infiniti. My safety was put at risk with this vehicle. I took delivery of my new m37x on the night of 1/4/2012. Upon delivery, i drove at highway speeds(65 mph). The car was vibrating constantly, and i felt the vibrations prominently through the steering wheel. Within twelve hours of delivery, i contacted infiniti about the safety issues via email and telephone. On 1/5/2012, i brought the vehicle to the service department at infiniti. Infiniti diagnosed the vehicle and discovered two defective tires/wheels. I feel that my safety has been placed in jeopardy with this infiniti vehicle. My minimum expectation from infiniti is the delivery of a safe vehicle. *tr

2011 M56
