How to read a Infiniti QX4 VIN — every digit explained
Every Infiniti QX4 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this QX4.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your QX4 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module
What's wrong. Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain air bag inflator replacement service parts that may have been installed as part of a theft or collision repair. The parts include certain passenger-side air bag inflators designed to fit Infiniti 2002-2003 QX4, 2006-2010 M35 and M45; Nissan 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, and both driver and passenger-side inflators designed to fit 2007-2012 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback vehicles. Please see Nissan's recall report for the specific part numbers. These replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
Risk. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Fix. Dealers will inspect and replace the inflators as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 14, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669.

What's wrong. Nissan is recalling certain model year 1996-2004 pathfinder and model year 1997-2003 infiniti qx4 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, washington d.c., west virginia and wisconsin. In areas of the country in which heavy concentrations of road salt are used, a mixture of snow/water and salt may enter an assembly location hole in the upper strut housing, causing water to collect at the mating surface of the strut housing panel and the inner hood ledge assembly. Over time, this snow/water and salt intrusion may result in corrosion of the strut tower housing in some subject vehicles.
Risk. The strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly. This may lead to grinding noises, increased steering effort, and possibly the steering column to break, resulting in the loss of steering control, which could result in a crash.
Fix. Nissan will inspect the strut housing and repair the vehicles as necessary, free of charge. An interim notification letter was sent out in may 2011. The second notice was mailed on july 25, 2011. Owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
Air Bags
What's wrong. Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2001-2003 Nissan Maxima, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4 and I35, 2003 FX35 and FX45, and 2001 I30 vehicles. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
Risk. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

Air Bags:frontal
What's wrong. Nissan is recalling forty-six certain model year 2002 pathfinder and infiniti qx4 vehicles manufactured from august 24, 2001 through august 28, 2001. The air bag inflator contains propellant wafers that are required to properly deploy the front passenger air bag. Due to improper propellant wafer installation during the air bag inflator assembly process, some air bag inflators may be missing one of the wafers. As a result, the remaining wafers in the inflator used for the deployment of the front passenger air bag may, over time, break up into powder due to normal vibration experienced while driving. This causes the combustion rate of the propellant to increase inside the inflator, which can lead to internal pressure rising suddenly during air bag deployment.
Risk. The inflator housing may rupture and pieces of the inflator could strike and injure vehicle occupants.
Fix. Nissan will notify the owners of the forty-six affected vehicles. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag module assembly with a new one free of charge. The safety recall began on august 19, 2010. Owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261 and infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

2001 Infiniti QX4 recalls 4
Structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:hinge And Attachments
What's wrong. Vehicle description: sport utility vehicles. Some of the brackets used to attach the two gas struts to the rear door (hatch) may have been improperly made. At high ambient temperatures, the increase in gas pressure in the strut(s) could cause one or both brackets to bend, resulting in the struts detaching from the bracket(s) when opening or closing the rear door.
Risk. If both struts detach from the brackets, the door will rapidly fall down, possibly striking someone and causing serious injury.
Fix. Dealers will replace the strut brackets. Owner notification began september 24, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
Electrical System:ignition
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. These vehicles may have an ignition lock assembly with improperly seated key cylinder cap connector pins. Vibration can cause the connecting pins to loosen and/or fall out allowing the key cylinder cap to disengage from the key cylinder.
Risk. If this occurs, the steering wheel lock rod can move, which could lock the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the ignition lock assembly and assemblies with loose or missing end cap connector pins will be replaced. A ring clip will be installed on all others to prevent loosening of the pins.
Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly:filler Pipe And Cap
What's wrong. On certain vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, kentucky, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, tennessee, vermont, virginia, west virginia , wisconsin and the district of columbia, during the coating process of the fuel filler tube assembly, an insufficient amount of coating may have been applied at the lower mounting bracket. This could result in an opening in the coating which can allow water to enter and make contact with the bare metal of the tube.
Risk. This may result in surface rust but not perforation of the tube. However, in those areas of the country which use heavy concentrations of road salt in the winter, if a mixture of snow/water and salt makes contact with the bare metal, corrosion may occur to a degree which results in perforation of the tube. In this case fuel leakage may occur when filling the tank. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Fix. Dealers will replace the fuel filler tube assembly with a new one with an improved coating process. The recall began on november 26, 2007. Owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Suspension 89 Read
My husband and i were involved in an accident on january 24th 2010, while traveling n. On state hwy 87 going towards payson, az although there had been a lot of snow in the higher elevations the roads were clear and appeared dry. The incident began when i apparently encountered a patch of black ice as i began across a bridge. I felt the rear end of the vehicle quickly slide left. Because of my experience in handling this vehicle and how well this vehicle handles, i was extremely confident in my ability to recover from the sliding without incident. (i was the 2nd owner & had it 10yrs) i had complete control of the vehicle through the 1st and 2nd corrections, however at the beginning of the 3rd & what would've been the last correction i felt something break in the front driver's side wheel area. (imagine being up on all fours and your left arm collapses out from under you) at that moment i no longer had control of the vehicle because whatever happened caused the fail safes in the vehicle to instantly shut everything off! The engine shut off, there was no power for anything! No steering, no brakes, no possible way to stop the vehicle from crashing. The vehicle was propelled across the hwy from the right shoulder and as if the drivers corner was pinned to the road, it turned just enough to face the concrete median, which it hit head-on at approximately 55 mph. The force of the engine pushing through the fire wall, snapped my right femur. I was air lifted from the scene with life threatening injuries & taken to the valley. Running boards are completely rusted, they will either fall off while driving and could cause an accident or an unsuspecting person could be relying on them to enter the suv and hurt them selves. The suv was well taken care of, 1 owner, and the frame rails and chassis are considerably rust free. How come these are in such bad condition? Why don't infiniti have replacements for them alone and not the whole running board for over $1300 per side! That's insane and no one is going to pay that for a 11+ year old suv! *tr
Severe corrosion on factory installed running boards on infinity qx4 which could collapse causing injury. *tr
While driving my 2003 infiniti qx4 on the highway, i noticed a severe vibration coming from the left side of my vehicle and tire. I took it to a local service repair shop and they took off my left front tire and saw where my inner apron was severely corroded, cracked and perforated.they stated they never seen such a type of corrosion in this area and that i should have the manufacturer look at it and take it to a body shop. They stated that the vehicle should be repaired as soon as possible as it was a serious safety risk as the strut tower could dislodge and come up through the hood of my vehicle which is close to my brake line and could affect my steering. I did take it 2 body shops both of which concurred that this type of corrosion should not have happened and they also stressed it was compromising my safety and there could be a shift of my suspension and loss of control of my vehicle while driving. I did contact infiniti service department and it was only glanced at not inspected. I filed a complaint with infiniti consumer affairs and wrote a letter to the owner of closest dealership. I was than about a week later asked by the local dealer if they could look at my suv again and pictures were emailed by body shop to the service department of dealership and sent to corporate and my request to have them repair vehicle was denied and i have had vehicle repaired at my cost at local body shop. Pictures are available that were taken by body shop and i statement of serious safety risk of vehicle is also available from body shop. *tr
Extensive rust and decay is found on the passenger side frame where the lower control arm connects. This is just below the strut housing and is visible through the front wheel well. I have attached both passenger and driver side photos as the defect only appears on the passenger side.
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 infiniti qx4. After the contact purchased the vehicle from an independent mechanic, he noticed rust forming on the passenger side frame rail below the passenger side control arm. The contact took the vehicle to another independent mechanic who informed him that they could reinforce the frame well; however, a fuel line ran through the rusted area, which could cause more damage to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 139,000.
The frame of the car is rusted out, making the truck unsafe for driving. The rust is also noticed on the running boards, and a large portion of the rear suspension system. I have had the recall fix applied on the passenger side, however rust is spreading like wild fire throughout the entire frame. *tr

On nov. 4th, 2013, i was driving my child to school. I began to turn left & the car suddenly jerked us to the left & then went out of control. As we were jerked to the left, i felt the steering wheel jerk and then it started spinning like a top. There was no way to control the steering. We slammed into an embankment and my 7 yr old daughter hit her head. Once we got home, i contacted a mechanic who said that he thought there was a recall so i contacted nissan. They said there was a recall on "some" of the 1999 nissan infinitis, but had no way of knowing if mine was one of them. I contacted the mechanic who said to give nissan my vin and they should be able to give me more info. Called nissan back and they were extremely rude and said they had already discussed this with me the previous day. I told them that a mechanic had told me to call back & give them my vin, so i did. She still would not help. I asked to speak to a manager and she said that i was not a "case" so i would not be allowed to speak to one & she would not give me a name. I stated that we were in accident, & just because we lived through it, did not mean that we did not deserve answers. Once she heard that there was accident, she said that they handle that differently & have to assign a case number to it then. They took my info and the process began. I did not receive a rental from them until the end of nov, several weeks after the accident. I had pictures of my own, & the steering column is broke in half, which i provided them as well. A clean break all the way through. On dec 4th i received an offer letter telling me that i had 7 days to accept, or they would take my rental and i would have to claim my car, which had been deemed un-drivable and un-insurable. Basically take this ridiculous offer, which was low, or you get nothing & have to pay for your rental, have no car and an injured daughter. *tr

Dear sir or madam: i have an infinity q45 anniversary edition, year 2000, with approximately 90,000 miles on it. I have a problem with the transmission shifting "hard" from 1st to 2nd gear first thing in the morning, when the car is "cold". Note: this happens in the summer also, so don't be misled and be aware, this phenomenon started long before 90,000 miles. I have had it back to the dealer a number of times; they have checked with test equipment and have experienced the problem and told me this is "normal". I don't think an automobile of this caliber and cost should feel like someone has thrown a "brick" in the transmission and it feels as though it is about to come apart. Really, the effect is very disconcerting and unnerving. When i purchased this automobile, i was convinced to purchase an expensive 100,000 mile extended warranty to cover such incidents if they were to occur. Is the dealer trying to give me the run around and waiting for the warranty to expire? Do they know what they are doing? The dealer himself reported to me they have seen other autos like mine with the same problem. Is this considered "normal"? I consider this a statistical anomaly. Are there any service bulletins that have reported a similar problem? [xxx] my dealer is: troncalli infinity 1625 church street decatur, ga 30033 thanking you in advance for your consideration. Can a Infiniti QX4 tow? Towing & payload
As an SUV, the Infiniti QX4 is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package, on a curb weight near 4,352 lb.
What sets your QX4's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
