How to read a Infiniti QX70 VIN — every digit explained

Every Infiniti QX70 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this QX70.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

2015 Infiniti QX70 recalls 1

Fuel System, Gasoline14V683000

What's wrong. Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Nissan Juke, 2012-2013 Infiniti M56, QX56, and 2014-2015 Infiniti Q70 (V8 engine vehicles only), and QX80 vehicles. The fuel pressure sensors may not have been sufficiently tightened during production. As a result, the fuel pressure sensor may loosen with vehicle usage and cause a fuel leak.

Risk. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could cause a vehicle fire.

Fix. Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will re-torque the fuel pressure sensors free of charge. The recall began on January 25, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

2015 QX70

Brake fluid began leaking onto the ABS actuator circuit board and created an electrical fire. This melted the engine harness and the connector to the abs module. This was confirmed by dealership technicians at Sewell Infiniti - Dallas. Dealership informed me they could not fix the vehicle because the part needed to replace (affected by a different recall), was discontinued and made me tow the vehicle to my house. The issue was confirmed by mechanics at Parkwood collision - Frisco. InfinitiUSA customer service acknowledged the issue and that they would have the original supplier of the engine harness (discontinued) make me one if I purchased at the dealership (which to my understanding would not solve the original issue at hand). It is available to inspect upon request. I have pictures and videos. The fire did put myself and others at risk as the engine harness was melting and shorting out while pulling my vehicle to the side of the road. It has not been inspected by insurance rep; at this time. There were zero issues with the vehicle or modifications to vehicle at the time of the incident. There were no warning lamps or symptoms until it was too late.

2017 QX70

The issue I have experienced involved my car stalling due to an inaccurate fuel gauge reading: basically, ran out of gas on a road while fuel gage was still showing half tank full. Luckily, was able to avoid any accident. The error code came up: P0462, which stands for “Fuel Level Sensor ‘A’ Circuit Low,” and indicates a problem with the fuel level sensor circuit. I was going to replace the fuel gauge/pump, but was told by a Nissan technical adviser at the dealership, the root cause is likely a faulty instrument cluster module, which is responsible for processing and displaying the fuel level information. This malfunction can lead to incorrect fuel readings, causing the car to stall unexpectedly.

2017 QX70

Multiple incidents of car not starting or stalling in rain. 1. After a rainstorm while parked, noticed water on the driver side floor and dripping from the driver door side under dashboard, water coming from defective design of sunroof water drains/tubing which are clogged because the tube is too thin which traps common dirt and dust from rain and road water. A wider diameter tubing or requiring maintenance during oil change intervals (blowing air into the tubing to unblock the clog) would likely solve this defect and car owners money. Car would not start for 2 days afterwards until all the water was dried from interior cabin. This problem repeated itself every time it rained - I had to tape the sunroof closed to prevent water ingress as a temporary measure and ultimately had the tubing replaced by the dealership at a cost of $1326.97 which was not covered by warranty. A simple inexpensive fix of adding to the scheduled maintenance at oil change intervals, the blowing of air into the tube to clear blockage would solve this pervasive problem among Infiniti cars with sunroofs ( as suggested by Infiniti service rep). Even though Infiniti knows about this problem, they chose to not alert owners to clear the tubing now and then. Infiniti benefits from this defect with huge profits having to replace the entire sunroof drains at thousands of dollar expense for owners - Another incident 10/2023, 100 miles from home, while driving down [XXX] in a massive summer downpour led to water ingress into driver side cabin and stalling of the car on the highway and car refusing to go fast. After I turned the car off, the car would not immediately start again. After drying the driver side out with paper towels, the car eventually started. I turned on the car heater at full blast and temperature to dry the car floorboard. After it was full dry the car operated correctly but creates anxiety in no knowing if the car will stall out again. 2016 QX70

Tl* the contact owned a 2016 infiniti qx70. While driving approximately 35 mph, a vehicle ran a stop sign and caused the contact to crash head on into another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained headaches, injuries to the sternum, and bruising aligned with the seat belt. Medical attention was not received. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard and was declared destroyed by the insurance investigator. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 1,000.

2017 QX70

A sensor, or trio of sensors, in the passenger side airbag system failed. Nissan/Infiniti says they cant be sure which of the three sensors is causing the problem and needs to replace all three. One of the sensors is integrated into the passenger seat itself and therefore the entire seat must be replaced. This all adds up to a very expensive repair cost of over $10,000 for sensors that are not accessible by the user, and therefore failed because of a manufacturer's defect, and not because of wear and tear, or anything caused by the user. Infiniti is unable to tell me how the passenger side airbag will react in the event of an accident, so that leads me to beleive the vehible is possibly unsafe, and a risk to anyone riding in the front passenger's seat. The problem has been inspected and is documented with the Infiniti and the Sewell Dealership in Dallas, Texas. The vehicle has not been inspected by the police or insurance representatives, but rather the Sewell Infiniti Service Center. There is an airbag light flashing on the dashboard. That is what alerted me to the problem and prompted me to take it in for inspection of the issue.

2015 QX70

For my 2015 infinity qx70, i was told the air bag module within the passenger seat and the occupancy classification system (ocs) which is part of the airbag system have both gone bad this friday causing my sensor light to come on. The dealer is saying the only way to repair it is to replace the entire passenger seat, which i very seldom ever have anyone in my car. Both the qx50 & qx60 have recalls for the same thing, but the qx70 does not. The light just came on friday morning, with no advance notification or issues. I'm told the replacement part for the air bag module is 873003gw4b and the ocs sensor is k88206w0y0a

2014 QX70

I experienced a cataclysmic failure of the airbag system. This occurred february 15, 2016, at 143pm, northbound i5, orange county, california. The driver curtain airbag and seat mounted side-impact airbag deployed while i was driving at 65 mph in the carpool lane. There was no collision. There was no indication of any warning symbols on the dashboard.

2015 QX70

I was backing out of the garage intending to stop on the driveway and inspect tires in the sunlight. The brakes had no effect and the car proceeded across the street and up the neighbor's driveway and finally stopped just short of their garage door. All this time I was applying the brake repeatedly with no result. Why it stopped just in time to save neighbor's door I don't know. I was too panicked to think of using the parking brake until later. A similar incident had occurred about a year ago in a restaurant drive-through. At that time I rear-ended the car in front about instantly, the cars were so close together. It happened so fast I thought maybe I had pushed both accelerator and brake with one foot, so I called it driver error and thought no more about it. This time there was plenty of time and no doubt about it, I applied the brakes many times and nothing worked until right at the top of their driveway. The current incident happened on May 16, 2021. I had taken the car (Infiniti QX70) to Nissan Reno on May 14 for oil change, filter, and brake fluid exchange, since Infiniti Reno was closed until further notice. The timing makes me wonder whether something happened during the fluid exchange. I haven't been back to Nissan Reno, not sure whether to trust them. This was reported to Ask Infiniti web site, and their suggestion was to take the car to nearest open Infiniti dealer in Roseville CA about 120 miles away. With questionable brakes? I don't think so.

I was driving down the highway on [XXX] near Tucson, Arizona, when I heard a loud boom and my sunroof shattered. There were no cars in front of me, nor did I see anything in the road. It scared me but luckily I had my sunroof visor closed. I pulled off the freeway to check the damage, I had a shattered sunroof with scratches along the top of my vehicle from the flying glass. No call to police was made. I have not repaired sunroof and I am waiting back on insurance to get quote on replacement. There is a rain-detecting auto wiper function setting with this car. When using the auto setting, the wipers will fire randomly when there is no moisture whatsoever. This can happen in hot or cold weather and regardless of whether the car is moving or stationary. While i have reported this problem multiple times to infiniti, they have not addressed the issue.

While driving on the interstate, the sunroof exploded. There was no warning, no objects seen that could have hit it, good weather. The glass from the sunroof hit the car behind me and cracked their windshield. Thankfully our sun shade was closed so no shattered glass came into the car and no one was hurt.

2015 QX70

The sunroof exploded at approx 8am 5/30/2017. The explosion was preceded by a rattling noise, then a very loud and scary bang. I was traveling approx 65 mph on i80 w (between vacaville and fairfield california). Morning temperature mild--probably in the upper 60's. I pulled off the highway and found the sunroof glass had first expanded then shattered. Because the inside roof door was closed, shards of glass did not fall into the car, but they did do some damage to the paint job. Called the dealership who had me bring it in the next day--i was told the repair would not be covered by my warranty nor my extended warranty because they believed something hit the glass. When i told them nothing hit the glass and pointed to the expansion of the glass they still refused to cover the repair. I reported the incident to start farm insurance and they covered the $1850 repair bill. My car was in the shop for over 2 weeks because the replacement glass ordered by the dealership arrived shattered too. They must be using inferior thin glass to have had this happen!

2015 QX70

In a week old qx-70 with only 448 total miles, while stopped at a traffic light, i leaned forward slightly and left side (floor anchor side) of driver's side seatbelt failed by the hip webbing separating from the floor attachment point. This is not the right side attachment that is supposed to be detachable, but the left floor anchor side. Had this occurred in an impact i would have been injured. This attachment point is of a strange and illogical design in that it has a probe similar to the regular entry/exit seat belt attachment. Either in installation or manufacture this floor attachment device was either not installed correctly or is of a poor design. I am a retired military aircraft accident investigator, safety officer, industrial safety manager, certified safety professional, occupational health and safety technician and an osha authorized outreach instructor as well as a safety engineer. I am very concerned about the potential of injury and/or death with others if this seat belt attachment problem is common. It is my understanding that infiniti and nissan uses this same design. The dealer has been excellent in immediately starting an in-company investigation, but i very concerned about this failure. I have photographs available for email. *tr

Can a Infiniti QX70 tow? Towing & payload

As an SUV, the Infiniti QX70 is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your QX70's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
