2015 KIA Rio Problems & Complaints

Engine making noise and smelling like it’s burning. Towed to mechanic said oil was not there despite recent oil change and said sparks of metal was on oil dipstick. Now being told needs new engine after recall oiece completed and the car has less than 110k miles. Kia will not honor an engine replacement.

My oil light does not and has not ever notified me of my oil level being low. The engine burns oil for unknown reasons. The oil dip stick tells me my oil is full after adding two quarts of oil but it’s calls for 3.8 quarts of oil.?

After an oil routine change last May, my mechanic informed me that the engine had almost no oil. I had been hearing a rattle when accelerating at times and noticed the vehicle seemed to be having trouble when increasing speeds were necessary (entering higher traffic areas/highway on ramps). I had always met the scheduled oil change requirements since I bought it in 2019 but this was the first time I had been told of this. The mechanic told me that it has been known that these vehicles have this problem. I usually went to the same reputable mechanic. Now, as requested by the mechanic, I check the oil each week and find that I have to add 1 quart every 10 days or less to keep the engine from failing outright. The engine light periodically comes on and goes off again, but I was told it was possibly related to the catalytic converter. I do not feel confident driving it much longer especially on highways because of possible engine failure on very hot summer days leaving me stranded in the heat.

THE SECOND ONE WAS AT THE DEALER. ON 12/8/17 MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET AND FELT A JOLT AND SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD OF THE CAR. SHE WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND GET OUT OF THE CAR SAFELY. SOMEONE USED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER TO PUT OUT THE FIRE BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. IT WAS TOWED TO A DIFFERENT KIA DEALERSHIP WHO SAID "THE ENGINE HAS INTERNAL DAMAGE THAT LOCKED UP THE ENGINE AND CAUSED OIL TO SPILL AND CATCH FIRE." THE WARRANTY COMPANY DENIED THE CLAIM AND SAID THAT IT WAS LACK OF MAINTENANCE AND THERE WASN'T ANY OIL IN THE CAR WHICH CONTRADICTS WHAT THE DEALER SAID. WE TRIED FIGHTING IT BUT AFTER A MONTH WE NEEDED TRANSPORTATION AND REPORTED THE CLAIM TO OUR INSURANCE COMPANY WHO TOTALED THE CAR BUT DID NOT GIVE US FULL VALUE BECAUSE THE WARRANTY COMPANY SAID IT WAS LACK OF MAINTENANCE. NOW WE SEE ALL THE REPORTS ON OTHER KIA'S GOING ON FIRE AND BELIEVE OUR CAR HAD THE SAME ISSUE. WE LOST OVER $7,000 ON THE DEAL.

My Kia had be under an unresolved recall that can cause a fire, not only putting myself and my family, but other drivers at risk. I have a toddler who rides with me and would be extremely hard to get out of a car seat if the car caught on fire, as such I have reduced driving with them to ensure safety, but this is an issue that cannot continue and I should not have to put myself and others at risk. I cannot afford to buy a new car and should not be forced to due to a manufacturing issue

My vehicle consumes oil according to my Midas repair shop. I was unaware that when I brought it in for regular servicing, the engine was almost empty of oil according to the mechanic. It had been rattling upon acceleration and lacking power set on ECO, but I ignored it. Now, I have to check and add 1/2 to 1 quart of oil every 7-10 days as the dipstick shows oil is low and also very dark. There is also an engine warning light on most of the time but it comes up as from the Catalytic Converter which I doubt. The electrical system also flashes on the dash where the a/c settings and circulation fan are on ocassion but is corrected when the temp guage is adjusted 1 click toward the warmer setting. I was notified of the lack of oil on my visit to Midas for an oli change back in April 2023. The mileage was 110,000 then. Everyone I know who has/had a Kia has had this problem and 3 have lost their engines as a result. Kia has lost my confidence because nothing was advised to owners until I found out of this common and costly issue just by chance. I wont buy another Kia now.

BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER AIR BAGS DEPLOYED IN MY 2015 KIA RIO WHILE DRIVING ON A DRY SMOOTH ROAD IN A NEIGHBORHOOD FOR NO REASON. THERE WERE THREE PEOPLE IN THE CAR, AND THE PASSENGER WAS INJURED FROM THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.

THE KIA RIO BOUGHT BRAND NEW AT HADDAD KIA IN BAKERSFIELD, CA BEGAN HAVING ELECTRICAL ISSUES IN THE YEAR 2018. IT BEGAN WITH OVERHEATING. KIA SUGGESTED THAT IT WAS A FUSE, AND THE REPLACED IT. UPON REPLACING IT THE ISSUE WAS FIXED FOR 2 DAYS. THE OVERHEATING PERSISTED, AND WENT BACK TO HADDAD KIA. THEY THEN "TIGHTENED A LOOSE HOSE" THIS FIXED THE OVERHEATING FOR 2 WEEKS. IT THEN RETURNED TO THE STAGE OF OVERHEATING. IT WAS ONCE AGAIN RETURNED TO HADDAD KIA WHERE THEY SAID THAT THE WIRING HARNESS HAD A LOOSE CONNECTOR, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE JOB TOOK 2 WEEKS, UPON GETTING THE CAR BACK IT DIDN'T OVERHEAT FOR 45 MINUTES. THE PROBLEM RETURNED. THE CAR WENT BACK TO KIA WHERE THEY NOW SAY IT WAS A MELTED FAN CONNECTOR. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY IN FOR REPAIRS AND UNKNOWN IF THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM OF OVERHEATING.

'TAMARA RECALL' MY CAR DRIVE GEAR HAS TWICE SLIPPED INTO 'SHIFT GEAR... 1ST, 2ND, ALONG WITH A NOTICEABLE LOU DAY SOUND: USUALLY I PUT CAR IN DRIVE OR REVERSAL, THEN DRIVE. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON; THEN 2ND TIME I NOTICE NEAR SPEED, IT SHOWED NUMBERS INSTEAD OF D FOR DRIVE. VECHILE WAS IN MOTION, I PULLED INTO A RESTAURANT PARKING LOT. CUT CAR OFF AND STARTED CAR UP AGAIN. ALL WAS GOOD. 1ST TIME I DROVE TO GOT HOME DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON.

Car filled wit black moke and fire.l was driving blind. brakes failed, power failed, burning the entire time. I somehow got out of burning vehicle and ran about 100 yards and watched the car explode!! Had car tuned up at Findlay Honda whede it was bought, 4 months ago, and they said it was fine... fire and police both told me i should not be here. Since, my life is in shambles. No car, no ID for a motnh, no license for 3 weeks. I bought car in 2023--- car was recalled in 2020. But was it and if it was, why did this EXACT problem occur? Someone must be responsible. When the accessory power (not ignition) is left on for more than 5 minutes and I go to start the car WITHOUT returning the key to the off position first, the power steering WILL fail and will cease to operate. I have to turn the car off completely and then restart it to get the power steering to operate again. I am used to it now but someone that is not used to it, they will be surprised if they pull out straight and go to turn with no assistance. The power steering warning light will stay illuminated during the failure but is hard to notice as it comes on momentarily (like an oil light) when the ignition is tuned on and the engine is started. The warning light is small and just blends in with the dash. My car is available for inspection at any time. Yes, others are at risk. I CAN reproduce the problem at any time. Reported to Kia dealer but they could care less. First occurred a few months after the car was bought new and happens multiple times weekly to present date. The car now has 68,000 miles on the odometer.

ON MAY 4, 2019, AT AROUND 2:15 PM I WAS DRVING AROUND 15 MILES/HR FOR 1 MILE & I STOPPED AROUND 230TH AVENUE SW & HIGHWAY 99 IN SEATTLE. I STOPPED BECAUSE I HEARD SOME ENGINE NOISES. I OPENED THE HOOD AND SOON AFTER SAW FLAMES UNDER THE ENGINE. THE FLAMES GREW BIGGER AND THE WHOLE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. I CALLED 911 AND THE POLICE AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT OUT THE FIRE. BY 2:45, THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISED. THE COMPLETE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS BURNT.

TAKARA RECALL I WAS HIT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF MY CAR BY A SEMI DOING APPROXIMATELY 58 MPH IN DOING SO MY CAR WENT INTO A SPIN AND THE BACK OF MY CAR HIT A CONCRETE BRIDGE, ON A 2 LANE INTERSTATE. MY AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY!

STOPPED CAR, PUT IN PARK, TURNED ENGINE OFF, OPENED DOO, STARTED TO GET OUT, CAR BEGAN TO ROLL, ONE LEG OUT OF CAR, ONEED IN, FELL UNDER CAR, REAR WHEEL RAN OVER MY LEGS.

VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION TURNING RIGHT DECELERATING AS I TURNED. ONCE I TURNED, ACCELERATION PEDAL WAS DISENGAGED AND NO ACCELERATION WAS HAPPENING. BRAKING SYSTEM WAS COMPLETELY LOCKED UP AND COULD NOT PRESS THE BRAKES. WHEN I COASTED TO A STOP, THERE WAS VISIBLE FIRE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. TEMP GAGE NEVER REGISTERED AS HIGH WHILE DRIVING. WITHIN A MATTER OF A COUPLE MINUTES, THE WHOLE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES AS I WAITED FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO ARRIVE. THEY SAID THERE WAS NO VISIBLE FLUID LEAKING ON THE GROUND AND DID NOT KNOW THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. CAR WAS MAINTAINED REGULARLY FOR OIL. HAD ISSUES WITH THE CAR OVERHEATING AND TOOK IT TO KIA AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT AND RELEASED ME. CAR IS TOTALED NOW.

I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN 2015 WITH LOW MILEAGE AND THE ECO BUTTON DIDNT WAS USED FOR WHAT THEY EXPLAINED BECAUSE GAS WAS BURNING ALOT FASTER UNTIL I GOT OVER 50,000 MILES. WHEN GOING UP A HILL IT MAKES A WEIRD NOSE LIKE THE MOTOR IS ABOUT TO GO OUT WITH A LOUD RATTLING NOISE AND ITS ABOUT TO MAKE A STOP. WHEN ITS RAINING AND YOU HIT THE BRAKES IT WANT COMPLETELY STOP, YOU HAVE TO HIT YOUR BRAKES TWICE AND YOU FEEL THIS SOUND LIKE A SPRING OR SOMETHING SKIPPING OVE THE FUCTION FOR IT TO MAKE A COMPLETE STOP AND THIS WILL CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT. IT HAS HAPPENED ALOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND INTERSTATE .ONCE U GO OVER 65 MPH THE CAR SHAKES WITH SOUNDS OF SOMETHING LOOSE IN THE STEERING AND OTHER PLACES. THE LOCKS ON THE DOORS AREN'T SAFE DUE TO DOORS CAN BE OPENED EVEN IF YOU LOCK THEM ON THIS STANDARD VEHICLE EX. IF A BIGGER SIZE PERSON OR BASICALLY AN AVERAGE ADULT WITH CERTAIN CLOTHING ON. WAS IN THIS VEHICLE THERE CLOTHING POSSIBLY COULD GET CAUGHT IN THE LATCH EVEN THOUGH ITS LOCKED THE DOOR COULD STILL POP OPEN DUE TO EASY ACSSS OF AN SAFELY LOCKED DOOR..YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE TO KEEP THE DOORS ON A SAFE LOCK IN THE BACK WITHIN THE HAZARD OF CHILDREN AND WHAT I MEAN IS IF SOMETHING WAS TO HAPPEN HAZARDOUS THE KID WANT BE ABLE TO GET UNLESS SOMEONE OPEN IT FROM THE OUTSIDE IN A PANIC SITUATION BECAUSE THE DOORS UNLOCK BY PULLING THE LATCH WHEN YOU USE THE TURN KEY LOCK FOR KIDS. MAINTENANCE LIGHTS COMES ON FOR NO REASON AND STAY ON IF YOU FIX THE PROBLEM ESPECIALLY THE TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT. THIS BEEN GOING ON EVERY SINCE I WENT OVER 50,000 MILES NOW IM AT 120,000 I TRIED TALKING TO THE COMPANY ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY WHO I PURCHASED IT FROM TO GIVE BACK BEFORE I ACTUALLY STARTED DRIVEN IT BUT THEY WOULDNT TAKE IT BACK AND NO OTHER DEALERS EITHER BEFORE ALL THE PROBLEMS STARTED.
