How to read a Kia Amanti VIN — every digit explained
Every Kia Amanti carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Kia and the country it was built in (real Kia codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Amanti.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- USA5NP · 5XX · 5XY · U5Y
- South KoreaKNA · KND · KNJ
- Mexico3KM · 3KP
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Amanti, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

What's wrong. Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Risk. Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix. Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

What's wrong. Huyndai-kia is recalling 139,844 my 2006-2007- sedona, sportage, sorento and my rondo and amanti vehicles. The stop lamp switch in the affected vehicles may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause the brake lights to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. A stop lamp switch malfunction may also affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature so the transmission shifter would not be able to be shifted out of the park position. It may also cause the electronic stability control (esc) malfunction light to illuminate, and it may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed.
Risk. Any of these malfunctions, alone or in combination, may lead to a crash.
Fix. Dealers will replace the stop lamp switch free of charge. The recall began on june 17, 2009. Owners may contact kia's consumer assistance center at 1-800-333-4542.

Vehicle Speed Control 56 Read
When pulling into a parking spot and with my foot on the break, the car suddenly accelerated. The car did not react to my breaking. The car kept moving forward over a sidewalk, over the curb on the street, into the back end of a pickup parked on the road I was facing, and started heading across the street toward another parked truck. Luckily there was no one on the sidewalk, no one was hurt. This has not happened before or since. No warning signs. When I took the car in to get an alternator replaced, the initial shop said they could not fix it bacause of codes that came up concerning the electrical system. I then had the car towed to a Kia dealer. They fixed the alternator but never mentioned the other codes. Suspecious.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 kia amanti. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph and began to slow down in order to make a turn. When attempting to accelerate there was a low engine power response with hesitation. The accelerator pedal was applied numerous times, and then suddenly an excessive acceleration occurred causing the vehicle to crash into a house. A police report was not filed. There were no personal injuries. The vehicle and the house sustained extensive damage. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.
As i pulled up to park my car behind a parked car, my car surged and crashed into the back of the parked car. I was easing into the space at a very slow speed and actually had my foot on the brake. The motor suddenly revved up, i felt the surge, stood on the brake pedal, but was unable to control the car. Although damage was minimal, i was concerned about another occurrence driving the vehicle and had it towed into the dealership. The service advisor said they have never heard of an incident like this with the amanti. There are many reports of these unexplained acceleration incidents with the kia amanti online. Hopefully these people are reporting them to you. If this had happened while trying to stop at a crosswalk for pedestrians, someone would have been seriously injured. At the consumers request, the component was revised to speed control. 05/10/11
I have an '05 kia amanti. This car has a "sudden acceleration" causing the car to speed forward when applying the brakes. I have been in two rear-end collisions in the last year and have not been in an accident in over 30yrs prior. I have had the car taken to sentry kia to be repaired but, they just say, they cannot duplicate the problem - so there is no problem. I know differently. I am afraid to drive this car. There have been many complaints on the kia forum and other sites about this problem with the '05 kia amanti - yet kia will not do anything for me. They force me to drive this weapon on wheels. I am beside myself as to what to do - i am afraid of hitting a pedestrian or even a child through the fault of the vehicle and not my driving!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 kia amanti. While driving approximately 60 mph the vehicle suddenly decelerated on its own. The contact was able to drive to the shoulder of the road and turn the vehicle off. Within approximately forty five minutes the vehicle functioned normally. The failure occurred twice before the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 20,300. Updated 09/15/11 *bf
From the day i bought the vehicle the throttle tip has been very aggressive. I barely touch the gas pedal and the car jumps forward. I feel this could lead to an accident and cause potential injury. *tr
The date below refers to most recent event. This has happened around 10 times since i have owned the vehicle (2007 kia amanti purchased new). In the most recent event i could not stop the car from running a red light, entering an intersection and nearly had a collision in the process. The problem is this: every now and then applying pressure to the brakes--which of course is supposed to stop the car--actually causes the car to accelerate dramatically--to jackrabbit i think it is called--with such force that even full pressure applied to the brakes cannot stop it. The tachometer goes into the red or danger zone when this happens. I have noted on kia forum (a web site for kia owners with no connection to kia motor company) other amanti owners have reported the same problem. The kia company does not acknowledge any problem and says that i must take it in so that it can be fixed if the service department can duplicate the problem. Of course, given the infrequency of the problem, they have not been able to duplicate the problem when i have taken it in--most recently a couple of days ago. Since i can never know when it might happen, all driving of the car makes me very anxious--afraid it will happen, for example, when i approach a crosswalk full of children. I feel i have no choice but to get rid of the car. I will, of course, feel morally obligated to reveal the problem when i trade the car in and will thus no doubt take a significant financial loss. This will be better than hurting someone either inside or outside of the car, however. I know very little about cars, but i would guess it is some kind of computer problem that happens only under certain unpredictable conditions. Just knowing it could happen at any time, however, makes the car too scary and dangerous to drive. If i can, i will get rid of the car as early as tomorrow even if i take a significant financial loss. *tr
When pushing the gas pedal after stopping for a light, engine is sluggish and will not accelerate, almost causing an accident. Had it in the repair shop several times, cleaning the accelerator position switch contacts, and various other wiring checks. The last repair replaced the computer control module at a cost of more then $2,000. This problem has been reported many times by other owners on the repairpal web site. So far, no recall notice has been issued. Kia is reaping the benefits of all the problems we all have been having.
Sluggish acceleration, lost power, unable to move car off road which could have caused an accident. This has happened to my family on five different occasions. This problem has been reported by many people under the repair pal web site (see below) "another person reported the "accelerator position switch may fail and cause sluggish acceleration" problem on their kia amanti" to view their report, click here: http://repairpal.com/accelerator-position-switch-may-fail-and-cause-sluggish-acceleration-023 thanks for visiting repairpal! This problem has cost me over $2000 for the replacement of the cars computer board and reprogramming of said board. *tr
After driving the car slowly lost power, my foot was on the gas, but it would not go any faster. I noticed this problem seems to happen after the car has idled for long periods. Then it gets power back after car has left to set 30 minutes to an hour. This has happened 3 or 4 times this year. On the interstate and city. Leaving me and my family stranded each time. So far this has just happened in the hotter months. Once it sits it doesn't happen again. Making it hard to take any where to get it checked out. The car stereo also is cold natured for some reason. In the winter it likes to change stations or cds until the car has warmed up. I have never heard of this. *tr
Air Bags 39 Read
Head-on crash into driver side passenger door. Air bags failed to activate. Both cars total losses, nothing repaired or replaced. *nm
Was in accident on 03-13-2013 severe left front end airbags did not deploy
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 kia amanti. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the contact crashed into another vehicle. The driver's side air bag deployed however, the passenger's side air bag failed to deploy and the shoulder strap of the seat belt failed to restrain the passenger. As a result, the passenger struck her head on the windshield and sustained neck injuries. In addition, the passenger suffered from an echoing and roaring inside her head. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure and current mileage was 55,000.
Tl-the contact owns a 2006 kia amanti. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 mph the vehicle began to slide on a patch of ice and then crashed into a guard rail. The driver sustained laceration of both the upper and lower lips, including a bump on the head. A police report was filed of the incident. The air bags failed to deploy with the impact. The vehicle was completely destroyed and towed to collision center. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. Js
I had a side impact, tbone with a kia soul whom hit me in the side. Neither his aiebags oe my airbags deployed
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 kia amanti. The contact indicated that the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who reset the code in order to repair the failure. The contact stated that on a different occasion while traveling 35 mph attempting to make a turn, the contact lost control of the vehicle, slid over ice and crashed into a guard rail. The air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained injuries to the neck and back. Medical attention was not required. The vehicle was not inspected, diagnosed nor repaired. The insurance adjustor and the manufacturer were further inspecting the vehicle to determine the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available.
While making a left the card was struck on the driver side (rear passenger door) by a person running a red light. The impact was severe enough that my insurance company deem the car a total loss. The side curtain airbag was never deployed.
I have taken my 2004 kia amanti in for problems with air bag light several time. I have 8 forms with backup but it was taken in more than that. They have replaced everything from the r/r clockspring, the airbag and modules, all more than once. The last time being in 10/2010. Then the light started to come on in 02/2011 but it would turn off again until it finally stayed on once again. I had made an appt to go in on april 13, 2011 but was involved in a fender bender april 12, so the vehicle was in the shop. The body shop ran a diagnosis on the airbag light and it showed the problem had begun 3 months earlier so it wasn't covered by the insurance since it was not due to the accident so i had to pay $112.00. Then i took it to kia this morning and they told me i would have to pay for a diagnosis at the dealer as well, unless it was the same problem that occurred on my last visit. $86.00! I asked, "after having brought my car in 8 - 10 times, i am going to be charged! They have replaced everything that come out on the diagnosis at least 3 times and checked the wiring according to what the last manager had said in summer 2010, but they would only consider the last visit! This kia dealer is know for replacing parts until they fix it. I know because i have a stack of receipts showing all the parts that were replaced on my vehicle. Rusty was the managers name at viva kia in el paso, texas. He is no longer there and it is now ruben, whom use to be the service clerk. I was highly upset. To top all this off, the body shop said that my air bag would not have deployed since the light was on so it was a good thing that it was only a fender bender. That, i believe is dangerous, considering that my airbag light is probably on for half of the year. *tr
The contact owns a 2008 Kia Amanti. The contact stated there were several failures with the clockspring assembly feature causing the horn and cruise control to become inoperable. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was also illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The mechanic confirmed the failure with the clockspring assembly. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.
Takata recall. The "airbag light" in my dash has been on for a while. After consulting with my mechanich his believes it is a airbag problem that my computer keeps recording. My car has no active recalls on it but my local dealer in nj tells me that the airbag has problems in manny of these cars.
Power Train 38 Read
When parking and trying to put the car in reverse our 2006 amanti kia lurched forward and accelerated down the street. I was the passenger and had unbuckled my seat belt in preparation of getting out of the car. Seeing that i was not belted in, i leaned over and saw that my husband had his foot on the brakes and not on the accelerator. The brakes did not engage, nor could the car gear down. The car kept accelerating faster and faster. The car was steered around a turn and finally lost control due to the speed and crashed through two tree shrubs, through a closed garage door, took out the main post in the garage, and hit the parked car in the garage. The airbags went off and the car stopped. 911 was called and my husband and i were taken to the hospital. The car was totaled! The car had only 20,000 miles on it. No lawyer will represent us because our injuries were not severe enough to warrant a suit against kia for product liability. *tr
Smelled plastic like smoke inside vehicle, rolled down window , vehicle accelerated with foot on brake pressing as hard as possible, accelerator pedal went down. Car continued to accelerate until striking a tree and rolling over. *tr
While driving at 40mph the transmission made a hard shift...there was a noticeable jump. Dealer said they couldn't duplicate the problem and they would only drive it around the block.
Having the same problem with this car since i purchased it on 12/14/12. It is a 'shifting/gear/transmission issue. Its a 4 yr old car, bought from dealer-kia of bedford, oh. The malfunction indicator lamp comes on after trying to shift into drive, and the car won't move(its revs in place like its in neutral). 1) 1st work order, done on 1/3/13, was to replace the 'front wiring assembly'harness and electrical led light assembly. 2) 2nd work order, done on 1/18/13, replaced the transmission inhibitor switch and cruise control switch... 3)the 3rd problem has just occurred yesterday, 1/28/13. Same issue, i was pulling out of a parking spot, going into 'drive' and lost the 'shifting/acceleration' capability. Put car back into park for a few minutes, then tried again and the 'gear' popped into 'drive'. Been happening intermittently since yesterday. The 'malfunction indicator lamp' has remained on since this 3rd incident on 1/28/13. This is a problem that doesn't seem to be fixable. There is a basic warranty that is still active ~ 7 months or @18,000 miles left! *tr
At 65 mph on a busy freeway -without any warning, engine died to idle speed and no power. Try crossing 3 lanes of fast traffic with no power and rapid deceleration ! Fortunately no impacts but some terrible near misses. The check engine light illuminated . The code was p2135 -throttle position switch failed.that caused p2106 &p1295 "limp home mode"-which should be changed to " killed in action(kia) while limping mode". If you check the internet, this is a well known problem across a range of kia and hyundai vehicles.there are tsb's for it.just search "2135 kia" or p2135 hyundai". The retail price for the tsb repair is only $165. It requires replacing the defective tps and a reflash of the ecm. It is free under warranty. Why not make this a recall? The defect is widespread, easy and cheap to repair and potentially deadly -why not a recall? Dealer was excellent .fixed the problem -they were very familiar with the issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 kia amanti. The contact stated that while driving at 10 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle jerked and failed to accelerate. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the esc failed to function but the vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 69,000. Updated 1/20/16 *ss the consumer stated the tranmission failure was the same as described in the recall, but the vehicle was not included. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 kia amanti. While attempting to accelerate from a stationary position, the vehicle would not accelerate past 10 mph. The contact indicated that the failure would occur once the vehicle warmed up. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced a computer board and the failure was remedied; however, the failure recurred six months later. No further information was available. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 75,000.
Car would not pick up speed as we were leaving from a complete stop took car in 2008 and found the ignition sensor was bad, it was replace car ran good, 2012 car starting with slow speed at acceleration, changed spark plugs, throttle sensor, 2 ignition sensor. Nothing helped. Took car to dealer, kia kept car for 3 days and could not find the trouble. Kia dealer called and notified me it was best to trade in car because it was not worth fixing. As i read reports from other kia car owners it seems everyone has this problem with the amanti but as i was told and many other car owner are informed kia dealers can not find the problem. Kia needs to find a fix to this problem as a kia owner when i need to pick up speed and can't makes you wonder it someone going to hit me. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 kia amanti. The contact was driving 40 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 78,000 and the current mileage was 82,000.
Car stopped accelerating three times this week on trip. This occurred two years ago and kia dealer could not "duplicate" the problem. The car engine doesn't stop but it's as if it goes into neutral; like the transmission disengages. It then bucks, accelerates, and dies. After about an hour, it's fine. *tr
Electrical System 34 Read
I was driving the car down a 3 lane road. The windows began to open and close, the door locks did the same. Warning lights were flashing on & off on the dash and i had almost no control over the steering wheel. The light ahead was red and when i tried to stop the car, nothing happened. I tried putting the car in neutral to slow me down and pushed as hard on the breaks and i was unable to stop and his a car in front of me very hard. I had a concussion, sprained thorasic spine and neck. A sprain on my right hip and pulled muscle in my calf from trying to make the car stop. This totalled my car and caused severe burns from the air bags. The driver side door was stuck and i had to be pryed out of the car. We have always maintained the car and had all necessary repairs. The car had 99,239 miles on it. I truly though i would die. I am unable to get into my trunk to retrieve my property and i cannot tell you how disappointed in this vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 kia amanti. The contact stated that when the vehicle does not operate everyday the battery will run dead. The sunroof will independently open. The contact also stated that the electronic panel failed to function. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanic and was diagnosed that a new electronic panel was needed. The vehicle was not repaired due to the replacement part was not available. The contact also mention that on another occasion while driving at 45 mph, the vehicle collided with a deer and the passenger air bag failed to deploy. The contact stated that there was no injuries to either driver or passenger. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the damage of the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 2,500.
After getting home last night from my sister in law's gender reveal, i saw smoke coming from under the bonnet so i opened it quickly and saw a fire blazing behind the engine....when the fire department got there, they pointed out to me that the fire was electrical..... I need some form of compensation from the company as i am no longer able to drive the car and electrical issues are widely affiliated with this particular model of kia cars.
Power side view mirrors are moving while driving or when shifting transmission from park to reverse/neutral/drive. This is extremely dangerous as when i go to look out the side view mirrors they are constantly in a different position then how they should be set. I'm constantly adjusting the mirrors and they continue to move all over the place on their own.
The side view mirrors on the driver and passenger side will move at any time without a command. Too often when i want to change lanes, the mirror is not in the correct position. Dangerous
While driving, the driver and passenger side mirrors will readjust at random. This not only mashed changing lanes unsafe, but adds an unneeded distraction to set them back to a usable position. *tr
First noticed problem when merging onto interstate. The drivers side mirror was pointing down so i adjusted it while accelerating to merge into traffic. Once the mirror was in place i switched the mirror selector switch to the center neutral position. The mirror immediately started moving on its own and ended up pointing toward the sky. I had a near miss with a small car in my blind spot. Even being familiar with the problem there have been several more near misses. The dealership simply disconnects the battery for a few minutes and sends me on my way. This fixes the problem for a few hours but it always comes back. Both side mirrors are doing the same thing but the drivers side is more affected. *tr
When adjusting the side view mirrors they just start moving on their own ...sometimes while driving .. And it's dangerouse especially when they move without u realizing and you go to check them and they are all weird so you have to adjust them while driving .. Once you've adjusted one the other one will move for no reason.. *tt

This is the 2nd time for the same issue (mileage 17900) -previous issue was july 2012. Driving down the interstate-car suddenly looses power down to idle only speed. Fortunately, then & today no tractor trailers ran over top of the car. Could mange to get to the side of the road and out of the way. Kia is obviously not fixing this position sensor/computer problem. Driving the car in limp mode to a garage is extremely dangerous as must get up to 25mph then use the cruise control-in traffic it is off & on.start & stop. Be forewarned you should force kia to fix this problem before someone gets killed. I await your response. I see someone else has put in a complaint-i wonder how many others have experienced this problem and have not complained. (like my first experience). *tr

I purchased my kia from jd byrider in 2016 of july and i have had a real deal with this car. In the pass 4 years with this car i have poured more than $5,000 into this car into it. Every time you get this car fixed it has a new problem about 1 month later or the check engine light comes on. But recently my wife was driving her mother and my daughter around shopping about 10 miles in distance from the house the mall and driving store to store. It was 93 degrees outside and she had the a/c running and suddenly the car started to have sudden acceleration she tried to stop the car and it did not stop the engine keep revving up harder harder and harder. At this point she was able to turn back into the parking lot after getting off the main rode. This car is a danger to people driving it and others near this car should not be on the street i repeat this car should not be on the street. I am glad my family is safe but i will trading this car in soon and i hope the rip it up and tear it to pieces for parts because it could have ended my families life. For me and my other love ones to very see them again. Get this car off the rode please. This is the third time this has occurred i could't do anything because jd byrider sold me overpriced junk $12,000 worth of it and add the repairs on top. I refuse to keep driving this car or have my love ones drive that car.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 kia amanti. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it remained for thirty days for investigation. The ecm was replaced. A few weeks after the repair, the failure recurred. The mechanic stated that the replacement part was faulty. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired for the second time. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 49,814.
Since purchasing my 2005 kia amanti air bag light has been on; the vehicle has never experienced an impact which would cause the airbags to deploy neither have any of the airbag components ever been tampered with. The throttle control of the vehicle is extremely sporadic and often causes hesitation, lurching, no acceleration, and even loss of all power. I have had the dealership update the ecm and the tps replace but the problem still persisted. I noticed the throttle body plate was extremely difficult to actuate so i then purchased another throttle body and replaced my older one. Everything functioned as should be expected up until approx. 3 months ago the issues started back up again. I noticed the throttle body motor had started to become increasingly hot to the touch indicating an excessive amount of resistance within the motor circuit. Being that the problem is recurring, i feel the issue is located either within the engine wiring harness or the engine control module and it, as well as the ruined throttle body motor, need replaced at the cost of the kia motor company. The issue can, and has, caused numerous accidents, stalling in heavy traffic as well as lurching and speeding away of vehicles. A major safety issue is present and needs to be addressed.

[XXX] This was a persistent problem since the car was new; yet, undiscovered by the dealer after their examination. Continued complaint produced no result. Engineer's analysis: Rear Sway Bar End Linkage is designed to rotate during a (leaning outward) pitched road cornering and the resulting torsional forces on the frame. Both rear shock absorbers interfere with the travel of the Sway Bar end linkage during their designed rotational dynamic range. This interference of rotation destroys the shock absorber by repetitive striking and inhibits full functional rotation of the sway bar and end linkage. A mechanic (Jig-Saw Auto; Carson City, Nevada 06/24/2021) replaced damaged shocks hoping to fix the problem; but, it did not. When another mechanic (Les Schwab North Carson City, NV 06/30/2021) put the KIA car on a lift, and discovered the problem a quote was given for a repair of the new shocks which were now damaged. When, by chance, a licensed engineer (yours truly) examined the area, the design flaw was discovered. Replacement of parts would result in damage to parts from the design flaw. --[XXX] , Licensed P.E. in CA and IL. [XXX] cell ph. On Behalf of Dr.[XXX] DDS. It began with squeaky noise steering it ended with steering completely locked up undrivable. Mechanic said he saw that alot in that year model. Replaced the steering pump worked ok for 6 months or so & the same thing. Had to tow it. Mechanic said needed to replace the entire rank & pinion & that it may or may not correct the problem . He did some kind of adjustment charged me $250 & i was able to steer. 6 months down the road its doing the same thing esp light comes on a dragging noise& troubles steering. I notice it more maneuvering to park in a space... *tr

Upon filling the tank of the kia amanti, shortly thereafter, the engine will begin to surge and react erratically without pressing the accelerator. Every amanti owner i have spoken with has this issue! A driver could be easily involved in a fatal incident with this issue. This also occurs upon startup when parked. If there is a car in front of you in a parking lot, you would hit it. One owner said he had the control module "flashed" and it solved his problem. Could we please get some action on this? Kia is well aware of the problem. I tell the service advisor about it every time i'm at the dealer. I will file a giant lawsuit if i'm involved in an accident and survive. I'm in on a class action suit if anyone has one going. *tr

There is also a high priority recall on the stop lamp switch, recall #sc077. Also see technical service bulletin #kt2007030801. On window sticker states car should average 17 miles per gallon city, and 25 miles per gallon on highway. Over a nine month test which i kept a record of date, total miles on car, miles driven, total gas to refill tank, and miles per gallon the best mileage we got was 14.51 city. The best overall mileage was 17.55 miles and that was a trip to the coast. We took the car to the dealer and he claims that there is nothing wrong with the engine. This is my wife's car and we do not drive it that much because of the price of gas. We were misled by the window sticker and we feel that the nhtsa should make the manufacturer state the correct findings on mileage for this car. I am caught between a hard place and a rock for my wife likes the car and i feel it is a piece of crap. *jb
