Is Kia reliable?

Across rated models, Kia averages a 4.1/5 ForCar Reliability Score, with 21 models rated 4★ or higher. Each model is scored from NHTSA crash-test safety, recall frequency and the share of owner complaints involving a crash, fire or injury — not user reviews.

Kia competes in mainstream passenger and SUV segments alongside parent Hyundai, with similar value-priced positioning but distinct design language and dealer networks. The Telluride won North American Utility of the Year in 2020 and remains a US-only nameplate. Kia's GT performance line and EV6 GT compete with sport sedans and EVs from Tesla, Ford and Volkswagen at price points typically 20-30% below comparable European premium offerings.

About Kia

Kia's name combines the Sino-Korean characters Ki (起, to arise or come up) and A (亞, Asia), interpreted as rising out of Asia. The company built bicycle parts in 1944, complete bicycles by 1952, and motorcycles by 1957. After near-bankruptcy in 1997, Kia was acquired by Hyundai in 1998. The 2010 Optima, designed under former Audi designer Peter Schreyer, repositioned Kia from budget brand to mainstream challenger.
