REPLACED THE REAR BRAKE SHOES ,BECAUSE OF A NOISE WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. WHEN THE BRAKE DRUM WAS REMOVED THE ON THE RIGHT SIDE THE BRAKE LINING FELL ON THE FLOOR. IT HAD SEPARATED FROM THE BRAKE SHOE. THE BRAKE DRUM SHOWED NO SIGN OF OVER HEATING SUCH AS IF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS LEFT ON.(,CHECKING)ALL THE SHOES APPEAR TO BE FAILING. .THE VEHICLE HAS FRONT DISC AND HAS 64000 MILES ON IT . TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 KIA SEPHIA. THE BRAKES MAKE A BANGING AND KNOCKING NOISE WHEN THEY ARE APPLIED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL OF THE BRAKES WERE CHANGED, BUT THE NOISE STILL PERSISTS. REGULAR DRIVING CAUSING BRAKES ON 2000 KIA SEPHIA TO REQUIRE CONSTANT MAINTENANCE ON THE FRONT ROTORS AND PADS. AT VARIED INTERVALS, THE BRAKES WOULD BEGIN TO START VIBRATING WHEN APPLIED, ESPECIALLY ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEEDS (60 MPH) AND GOING DOWN HILLS. THERE HAS BEEN NO ACCIDENTS BUT MANY CLOSE CALLS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY HAZARD. THERE IS CLEARLY A FLAW IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM, THAT KIA OBVIOUSLY WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I HAVE TO REPLACE THE ROTORS THIS WEEK BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN SHAVED DOWN SO MUCH. FIVE TIMES IN 2 YEARS, AND I WON'T EVEN DRIVE THE CAR FOR MONTHS AT A TIME. I BOUGHT A 2000 KIA SEPHIA ON NOVEMBER 27, 2003. THIS CAR HAS THE BALANCE OF A 100,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY AND ONLY HAD 15,000 MILES ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT. I NOTICED THAT IT WAS USING A QUART OF OIL EVERY 1,000 MILES AND AFTER I CHANGED THE OIL IT WAS USING A QUART EVERY 500 MILES. I HAD ALREADY TAKEN IT IN TO THE DEALER FOR 15,000 MILE SERVICING AND TOOK IT BACK ABOUT THIS OIL PROBLEM. THE FIRST THING THEY ASKED WAS PERMISSION TO PULL THE HEADS, AFTER WHICH THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE TOP OF THE MOTOR WAS BURNT AND THE ONLY CAUSE FOR THIS WAS FAILURE TO PERFORM MAINTENANCE. I WAS ASKED TO PRODUCE MAINTENANCE RECORDS FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR, WHICH I DID. AFTER PRODUCING THESE RECORDS, THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP NOW WANTED PERMISSION TO DROP THE OIL PAN. I GAVE IT AS I THOUGHT MY CAR WOULD FINALLY BE FIXED. I CALLED THE SERVICE MANAGER AND WAS INFORMED THAT SINCE THERE WAS SLUDGE IN MY OIL PAN THEY WOULD NOT FIX MY CAR, EVEN THOUGH I HAD PROVEN IT HAD BEEN SERVICED, AND IT WAS STILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO FOR HELP, SO AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT HOPING YOUR AGENCY CAN IN SOME WAY HELP ME.*AK

OVER THE COURSE OF THE PREVIOUS FEW MONTHS, PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT, I NOTICED THAT THE 2000 KIA SEPHIA WITH 80000 MILES BEGAN TO HAVE A HARD TIME WITH THE SHIFTER. IT BECAME INCREASINGLY MORE DIFFICULT TO GET THE CAR TO SHIFT FROM PARK TO DRIVE. IT CONTINUALLY FELT LIKE THE SHIFTER WAS STUCK. I ENDED UP HAVING THE CAR TOWED VIA FLATBED BECAUSE THE CAR REFUSED TO START. AFTER GETTING IT TO A MECHANIC I WAS TOLD THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED, HOWEVER, BEING THE CAR ONLY HAD 83000 MILES I SOUGHT A SECOND OPINION. AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALER AND DESCRIBING THE PROBLEM TO ONE OF THE MECHANICS (WHO WILL NOT BE NAMED), I WAS TOLD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL KIA. THAT THE SEAL IS FAULTY IN THE TRANSMISSION CASING AND AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME DIRT AND/OR WATER LEAKS INTO THE LINKAGE CAUSING IT TO NOT SHIFT. THE WAY TO CORRECT IS TO EITHER REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION OR TO HAVE THE LINKAGE REDONE AND RE-LUBRICATED FOR PROPER OPERATION. A THIRD OPINION REVEALED THE SAME INFORMATION. A KILL SWITCH DOES NOT ALLOW THE CAR TO START UNLESS THE CAR IS IN PARK OR NEUTRAL. SO ONCE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS MANUALLY SHIFTED INTO PARK THE CAR STARTED IMMEDIATELY. IT WAS INDICATED THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON AND WILL MORE THAN LIKELY RE-OCCUR BUT THAT THE "TREATMENT" SHOULD HOLD FOR AT LEAST A YEAR. AFTER $485.00 IN REPAIRS NOT INCLUDING THE TOW THE TRANSMISSION IS BEGINNING TO ACT UP AGAIN. I DON'T WANT THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE AND WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS COMPLAINT IS LODGED AND URGE THAT TRANSMISSION ISSUE RECORDS BE SEIZED BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO BE A PRETTY COMMON KNOWLEDGE THING AMONG MECHANICS THAT THIS HAPPENS ON THIS MAKE AND MODEL KIA SEPHIA. THE SEALS HAD TO BE REPAIRED AND THE LINKAGE PROPERLY LUBRICATED TO CORRECT THE ISSUE. HOWEVER, READING THE KIA WEBSITE FOR INFORMATION ABOUT TRANSMISSIONS THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A NON-SERVICEABLE AREA AND THE DEALER IS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION TO THE TUNE OF $1800.00 PLUS LABOR AND TAXES. *JB

IN NORMALLY OPENING THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE IN COLD WEATHER, THE PLASTIC DOOR HANDLE BROKE BECAME INOPERATIVE. I OWN KIA-SEPHIA-2000. WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS UNDER 0 DEGREES THE DOORS FREEZE SO BADLY THAT I CANNOT SHUT THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR OR ANY OTHER DOOR THAT I MIGHT OPEN AND THEN TRY TO CLOSE. MOST OFTEN,. AFTER I STARTED AND RAN THE HEAT AT THAT TIME THE DOOR MIGHT CLOSE SHUT. ONE EVENING IN JANUARY, I HAD TO DRIVE THE ENTIRE TIME , 27 MILES OR 45 MINUTES WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR UNABLE TO CLOSE. I WAS HOLDING IT CLOSED AS TIGHTLY AS I COULD. I HAVE A 2000 KIA SEPHIA AND THE VENTS STARTED TO CRACK. NOW THE WHOLE DASHBOARD IS CURLING UP TO WHERE THE VENTS WON'T EVEN WORK. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE DEFROSTER WILL NOT WORK BECAUSE OF THE DEFORMATION OF THE DASH. AND WITH THIS CAR JUST BEING 6 YEARS OLD WHEN IT HAPPENED I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE RECALLED. TL*- THE CONTACT CALLED REGARDING A 2000 KIA SPECTRUM. THE CONTACT OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE 2002 AND ALL FOUR DOORS WILL NOT SHUT WHEN IT WAS COLD OUTSIDE. HEADLIGHT HOUSING HAS SEVERE DISCOLORATION AFTER ONLY A LITTLE OVER 4.5 YEARS OF USE. PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND HAVE HAD NO ACCIDENTS. BOTH SIDE MARKERS RIGHT NEXT OF THE HEADLIGHT HOUSINGS ARE AS CLEAR AS GLASS, HOWEVER, THE HEADLIGHT HAS TURNED VERY DINGY, DULL YELLOW TO THE POINT WHERE IT IS VERY HARD TO SEE AT NIGHT. UPON DISCUSSING IT WITH KIA, THEY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THAT THERE WAS NO OTHER REPORTED CASES OF THIS HAPPENING. I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE SERVICE MANAGER WHERE I GET MY VEHICLE SERVICED AND HAD THE HEADLIGHTS LOOKED AT STATED LIKEWISE THAT KIA KNOWS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM, BUT WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT IF THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY WHICH IT IS BECAUSE AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE THERE WAS ONLY A 5/50 WARRANTY. THE PRICE OF THE PARTS NEARLY $400.00 WHICH I BELIEVE SHOULD NOT BE CHARGED TO ME SINCE THERE IS A CLEAR DEFECT IN THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING THAT IS CAUSING THE DISCOLORATION TO OCCUR IN SUCH SHORT TIME OF OWNERSHIP. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT REQUIRES TO BE ADDRESSED BY KIA.

RIGHT FRONT (PASSENGER) DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. DOOR LATCH WILL NOT UNLOCK. FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, I HAD TO CUT A HOLE IN THE INSIDE DOOR PANEL TO ACCESS THE INTERIOR OF THE DOOR. THE LOCK MECHANISM WAS RUSTED DUE TO A POORLY DESIGNED WINDOW SEAL THAT DRAINS INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE DOOR--RIGHT ONTO THE LOCK. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE REPAIR SHOP DUE TO GETTING THE CAR INTO OR OUT OF PARK. REPAIRS OVER THE PAST 18 MONTHS HAVE BEEN RE-LUBRICATED THE GEAR-SHIFT CABLE (1ST REPAIR). REPLACE THE GEAR-SHIFT CABLE (2ND REPAIR). THE LAST (3RD) REPAIR WAS A RE-LUBRICATION OF THE REPLACED GEAR-SHIFT CABLE AND RE-ADJUSTMENT OF THE LINKAGE SO CAR COULD RECOGNIZE THAT IT WAS IN PARK. THESE REQUIRED REPAIRS ARE BEING BLAMED ON NOT DRIVING THE CAR ENOUGH. ALSO HAVING TROUBLE WITH PREMATURE WARRING ON THE BREAK ROTORS AND PADS. CAR HAS JUST OVER 22,000 MILES ON IT. ON 12/20/00, I DROVE TO WORK AND LOMA LINDA WITH NO PROBLEM. ON MY RETURN FROM LOMA LINDA THE OIL LIGHT CAME BACK ON. I PULLED OVER CHECKED THE OIL AND ADDED ONE QUART TO MAKE SURE. OIL LIGHT REMAINED ON. DROVE TO THE 215 FWY AND THE CAR STARTED TO SKIP (JOLT). THIS WAS AT ABOUT 70 MILES PER HOUR. AS I WENT DOWN THE FWY IT BECAME MORE PROFOUND. The contact owns a 2000 Kia Sephia. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH and approaching a traffic light, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was unable to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle was able to restart after being jumpstarted. The contact continued to drive; however, the failure recurred 5 times while driving and depressing the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal. After each failure, the vehicle was able to be restarted when jumpstarted. The vehicle was taken to a local Pep Boys and diagnosed; however, no fault code was retrieved. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

ON MONDAY 9/25 I CALLED KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SPOKE TO JOHN AT EXTENSION 4635. HE TOLD ME HE WOULD CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP AND SOMEONE WOULD CALL ME. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THEY OFFERED TO SUPPLY THE PARTS BUT NOT THE LABOR TO FIX THE PROBLEMS. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. PURCHASED VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY 10 DAYS BEFORE ACCIDENT AND NOTICED IMMEDIATELY THAT THE BRAKES WERE "MUSHY" AND STOPPING DISTANCE SEEMED UNUSUAL. INDIVIDUAL SELLING VEHICLE (NOT DEALER) STATED THAT THIS WAS NORMAL FOR THE VEHICLE. IT WAS HARD FOR ME TO BE CERTAIN SINCED MY PREVIOUS VEHICLE IS KNOWN FOR VERY TOUCHY BRAKES AND I THOUGHT IT MIGHT JUST BE AN ADJUSTMENT PERIOD. HOWEVER, I AM A CAREFUL AND PATIENT DRIVER AND IN 20 YEARS OF DRIVING HAVE HAD ONLY 4 SPEEDING TICKETS AND ZERO ACCIDENTS UNTIL I DROVE THIS CAR. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 9-10 DAYS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX. 15 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WITH ABOUT ONE CAR LENGTH BETWEEN MYSELF AND THE PICKUP IN FRONT OF ME. THE PICKUP DRIVER SLAMMED HER BRAKES AND I SLAMMED MINE ONLY TO HAVE THEM GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND PROVIDE NO RESISTANCE. I HIT THE PICKUP HARD ENOUGH TO SEVERELY BRUISE MY ARM ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND CAUSE SEVERAL DAYS OF BACK AND NECK PAIN. SOME OF THIS MIGHT HAVE ALSO BEEN AVOIDED IF THE AIRBAGS HAD DEPLOYED, BUT EVEN THOUGH THIS CRASH WAS A FULL FRONTAL ACCIDENT THEY DID NOT. AFTER I LEFT THE VEHICLE, ANOTHER SMALL CAR HIT THE BACK OF MY VEHICLE AND SEVERELY DAMAGED THE REAR OF MY VEHICLE AND THE FRONT OF HERS. HER AIRBAGS DEPLOYED IMMEDIATELY AND SHE SUSTAINED ZERO INJURIES. MY CAR HAD ONLY 58,000 MILES ON IT AND THE TIRES WERE NEARLY NEW, SO IT APPEARS TO ME THAT I HAD BOTH BRAKE AND AIRBAG FAILURE RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF MY VEHICLE AND PERSONAL INJURY AS WELL AS DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLES OF THE OTHER TWO DRIVERS. SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS NOT FINANCED, IT HAD LIABILITY INSURANCE ONLY. SAME DAY (8/5/04) TOOK CAR HOME TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT CHANGE GEARS. PULLED OFF ROAD, PUT CAR IN PARK, SHUT OFF CAR, WAITED A COUPLE OF MINUTES, RESTARTED CAR, NO PROBLEM AT THAT POINT WITH SHIFTING. CALLED DEALERSHIP IN BRANDON (WHO REPLACED TRANSMISSION) SPOKE WITH ANDY ADVISED HIM WHAT HAD HAPPENED. HE STATED IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND IT WAS RESETING ITSELF ONCE THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF. HE SAID HE WOULD GET IN TOUCH WITH HIS TECHNICAL PEOPLE TO FIND OUT WHAT TO REPLACE TO FIX CAR. I HAVE CALLED ANDY EVERY DAY, SOMETIMES TWICE A DAY AND ALL I CAN GET FROM HIM IS HIS PEOPLE WILL NOT RETURN HIS CALL AND IN TURN ANDY IS NOT RETURNING MY CALLS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS STILL COMING ON AND NOW YOU HAVE TO BUMP THE STARTER A COUPLE OF TIMES TO GET THE CAR CRANKED. THE STARTER WAS NOT GIVING ME A PROBLEM UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. I HAVE HAD TO HAVE A POWER STEERING, RACK AND PINION, 4 SETS OF BRAKES GOING ON 5. I HAVE HAD TO HAVE MY TIRES ROTATED MORE TIMES THAN NECESSARY. THE BRAKES MAKES A GRINDING, RATTLING NOISE WHEN I TRY TO STOP. WHEN I PRESS ON THE BRAKES IT DOESN'T STOP QUICKLY. THE GASKETS AROUND THE DOOR IFS FALLING OFF. THE RADIO WILL SHUT OFF FOR NO REASON.
