My engine failed due to the knock sensor recall a known issue on my 2013 Kia Sportage the recall is supposed to provide a lifetime warranty but I was denied coverage because the failure happened before I was able to perform the update as I was a new owner to the car and was unaware of the recall at the time I have been going back and forth with the kia dealership for almost 8 months now 4 of those the car was at the dealership because they said I had to pay a $170 the fee for them to inspect the car to see if kia would repair it or not it which I was told I would get a full report when I finally was able to pick my car up I was told the claim was denied "due to recall not being performed" and that's literally all the paper said no report no details nothing I do t understand why I had to pay $170 for something they could have just told me because they knew the recall hadn't been completed at the time of entry and why did it take 4months of my car being there just to tell me that just for them to tell me that furthermore the recall applies to the car not just the original owner and covers all known defects and considering the engine failure was because of the defect and not normal wear and tear I'm requesting that KIA replace the engine in my vehicle in a timely manner as this failure was of no fault of my own but something that came directly from the manufacturer at time of purchase and had there vehicle not had a recall that effects the engine and the notification of a possible problem with the engine then my vehicle would not require a engine at this time.

While driving in the carpool lane, the engine briefly cut-out and than a rattling sound was heard. We decided to immediately exist the free way at a left-side car pool exit as a precaution. Immediately after exiting, the car went into a complete stall. Had we remained on the freeway, we would have been stranded in the fastest lane with no shoulder and with traffic approaching from the rear at 70mph. Thus we likely avoided catastrophe. There was no warning light. The problems was later determined to be caused by a manufacturer defect resulting in a connecting rod bearing failure. Pursuant to a class action settlement the engine was replaced. I'm writing to let others know that this is a potentially life-threatening danger and that the knock sensor recall does not adequately address this. Also, the dealer mischaracterized the symptoms on the engine warranty invoice, misstating the narrative above, wrongly stating "customer states CEL started flashing when driving after light appeared vehicle would not accelerate properly or start." This quote is untrue. There was no warning, and the car stalled.

Have been denied replacement of 2013 Kia Engine due to insufficient records. The KSDS had been installed May 7, 2021. Was told because I did my own maintenance and I have receipts and dates when the maintenance was done reason for being denied. I used 5W 20 full synthetic motor oil which was over and above what the car called for and a new oil filter every time which shows on my receipts. Obvious by looking at the vehicle that it was in good shape and maintained well for being a 2013. When I presented this to Kia, they said that they have in writing that you can’t do this. All it says is that they recommend service being done by a Kia dealer . this is when I found out about the Magnus and Moss warranty act of 1975. I kept a log of service done in my car from 5, 16 2019 until present. The car just stopped in the middle of the city street. It gave no warning sensor did not work. It did not slow the car down.. my wife called AAA and had it towed to the closest dealer . Again, I have receipts of all my purchases of oil and oil filters from 2019. I appealed the decision with Kia in which they came back and gave me the decision they weren’t going to replace it. We have been without a car for close to a month. I don’t know where to turn. I will continue to work on this as much as I can do what I think is right. I will also contact a Better Business Bureau . I know of people that had zero maintenance records and not the KSDS and had their car repaired. Talking with the mechanics they said at first they were fixing everything now they’re trying not to fix everything we bought the car in 2018 with 70,000 miles right now. The car has 103,600 miles. We bought the car from a Kia used car dealer.

my vehicle, 2013/ SL Sportage recently suffered catastrophic engine failure. I received a renotification from Kia regarding the software updates. Barely a week, [XXX], my engine seized in traffic due to rod failure which the software update could have prevented according to Metro Kia of Madison. I was also told by the same Kia authorized dealer that the repair would cost me $11,000 out of pocket in addition to the diagnostic fees of $210.87. I also contacted Kia Consumer Affairs at 1-800-333-4542 regarding this issue, but the representative told me that the defect is my responsibility as the owner of the vehicle. I think this is absurd and unacceptable. I’m a student who relies on this vehicle to commute to school. With the semester beginning and winter approaching, I can’t imagine being left without safe transportation which places me in a severely disadvantaged position. SAW THAT MY CAR WAS LEAKING OIL; TOOK IT IN TO GET LOOKED AT, THE MECHANIC SHOWED ME THE OIL PAN WAS LEAKING FROM SEVERAL AREAS AND THERE WAS OIL ALL OVER THE OIL PAN ITSELF. DID SOME RESEARCH AND SAW THAT SOME KIA SPORTAGES HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM. CALLED KIA AND THEY SAID MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BECAUSE IT IS A 2013 NOT A 2012. THEY TOLD ME I WILL HAVE TO GET IT FIX MYSELF AND PAY FOR IT - KEEP THE RECEIPTS IN CASE IT IS EVER RECALLED.

WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE TO START MY RIDE HOME AFTER CHRISTMAS, I NOTICED A TICKING SOUND THAT WAS NOT THERE BEFORE. WHILE DRIVING DOWN INTERSTATE 94 EAST AS I WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE, I WAS DECELERATING INSTEAD. LUCKILY I WAS NEAR AN OFF RAMP AND PULLED OFF. AT THE TOP OF THE RAMP MY VEHICLE DIED. I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND GOT DIRECTIONS TO A REALLY NEARBY FORD DEALERSHIP IN BALDWIN WI. NICEST PEOPLE HELPED ME THERE. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE WAS DYING,. I HAD IT TOWED TO LUTHER KIA IN BLOOMONGTON MG. THERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. AT 149,000 MILES I WAS SURPRISED. THERE WAS NOTHING THAT GAVE ME INDICSTION THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. NO LIGHTS ON THE DASH OR ANYTHING EXCEPT FOR THE TICKING AN HOUR BEFORE. KIA WAS CONTACTED AND DENIED ANY CLAIM OR RESPONSIBILITY. ON FURTHER CHECKING I FOUND THAT I WAS NOT ALONE IN THE ENGINE TROUBLE. THE 2013 KIA SHORTAGE HAS HAD MANY OTHER INCIDENTS AND COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE ENGINE. MANY OF THE STORIES WE EXACTLY LIKE MINE. I had my vehicle in for a recall from Kia PI2103 for Kia to update the software in my Kia Sportage. Which was to install software that could help my engine from failing. This was performed on January 19th 2024. Along with this recall they were supposed to extend my warranty to 15 yrs 150,000 miles. Shortly after aout 500 miles later and a few weeks my engine developed a knocking noise. I took back to the dealer that performed the recall to have it diagnosed. They advised that it needs and engine and is part of the campaign but they needed to get prior authorization. After a month went by Kia determined because I never took the key tag out of the car that I would not be getting a new engine for not meeting the requirements. How they determined this is when a service advisor is making a repair order they use window tags to locate cars. Well, the advisor rather than using a new window tag used the one that was sitting on my seat. I would like Kia to honor their extended coverage and replace my engine at no charge. Attached is proof I had KSDS and also a copy of the Kia techline that the service manager gave me to show the reason.

I was traveling at approx. 65 miles an hour in the #3 lane in traffic, when I lost power suddenly as if the engine died. I was able to immediately exit the freeway at the first exit and pulled into a gas station. (Approx. 2 blocks from the freeway exit) I noticed a light on the dash was lit in the shape of an engine that wasn't lit before. At this time, I heard an unusual loud knocking noise coming from the engine compartment. I had just come from the store and had frozen food in the car. I didn't know what was causing the noise it didn't sound good and decided to just have AAA tow it to my house. Once the car was at home in my driveway and I had unloaded the frozen food, I plugged in my OBDII reader which gave me a p1326 code. I checked to see what it meant and found out my year Sportage was prone to some kind of Premature bearing wear. The car has been serviced by the book by Kia of Alhambra since we have owned it. It was just in for an oil change, transmission flush, and brakes on the 19th of August 2022. We have never received any notice via email, mail, or from the dealership regarding any recall or potential problem at any time. This car is primarily driven by my wife. I'm glad she wasn't driving when this happened. I will be contacting Kia of Alhambra tomorrow and possibly having the vehicle towed there.

I was on the freeway going 55mph when my engine seized (engine light, oil light, and battery light went on) and I was no longer able to accelerate. I had just switched lanes in front of a semi when my acceleration stopped. It was a blessing there was an off ramp by the lane, otherwise the semi would have had to slam on their breaks since my car went from 55mph to nothing in a matter of seconds. No previous warning lights occurred before this incident. Luckily, I was able to coast off the freeway and park. When I restarted my vehicle, the lights went off and I was able to get my car home safely going very slow. The engine know knocks and KIA will not give us answers on coverage.

While driving my 2013 Kia Sportage at 70 mph from Wisconsin to Duluth MN, I heard a tapping coming from the engine. Very quickly, the noise escalated to a very loud knocking. At this time, I thought my engine was going to blow up while driving. I was very frightened by this experience. Then car shut off while I was driving putting myself and those behind me at rick of an accident, however I was able to pull over. I was alone. I had no idea what was happening and I was 75 miles from home. There was no WARNING indicator light to come on in my dashboard to inform me that there was an engine problem. After I steered my vehicle on the side of the road, I was able to start the car to get to the nearest gas station for help. There was no one available to help me. So I decided to drive my vehicle slowly home. That is when my engine blew-up and I could no longer drive the vehicle. I contacted KIA for Road Side assistance and they informed me the the tow would cost me near $560.00. Then I called my mechanic friend for a tow. After he arrived and looked at the engine, he looked over and under the engine and told me that a rod blew through the engine block. (Pictures available) My 2013 Kia Sportage was brought to KIA of Duluth the following day for repair. Kia of Duluth inspected the vehicle and informed me that a Knock Sensor Detection recall was not preformed on my vehicle and that my 100,000 mile Warranty had expired as I had 105,812 upon arrival. On October 27, 2021 I submitted a Claim to Kia Engine Settlement and have received no satisfaction. Further I was informed that I would be eligible for Towing and Rental Cost by Kia Consumer Affairs and KIA Engine and most resent been denied that as well. My 2013 Kia Sportage was valued at 10, 900 dollars when this happened on September 14th, 2021. I received no reimbursement. I have paid $2192.00 in towing and rental cost. This resulted in me purchasing a new vehicle.

ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8TH 2020, MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE 2013 KIA SPORTAGE WITH A LITTLE OVER 66,000 MILES ON IT. WHILE DRIVING ON HWY. 174 IN FRANKLIN COUNTY, GEORGIA THE CAR STARTED MAKING A SOUND AND THEN DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. OIL WAS EVERYWHERE IN THE ROAD. FORTUNATELY, THIS WAS IN A STRAIGHT OF WAY AND NOT IN A CORNER AND NO ONE WAS DIRECTLY BEHIND HER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE ENGINE BLEW A ROD THROUGH THE BLOCK AND IT WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE. KIA HAS RECALLED SIMILAR ENGINES BUT BECAUSE THIS WAS A DOHC MODEL ENGINE IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. HOWEVER, THESE ENGINES ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS AS THE RECALLED ENGINE. THESE VEHICLES ARE NOT SAFE AND SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE. I SCANNED IN A TEXT FROM MY MECHANIC AND THE KIA MECHANIC WHO GAVE ME A PRICE FOR THE NEW ENGINE. THANK YOU

KIA America has rejected my appeal for an Engine replacement through the Recall , I had the KSDS, Knock Sensor Installed by North Town KIA 3900 Sheridan Drive Amherst NY , May 7 2021. The warranty I received mentioned to keep oil and filter changed every 7500 miles with 5 w 20 oil . The oil was changed by Myself and I have receipts every 5k miles or less. I was turned down for what KIA tech line said Insufficient maintenance . As in they are calling me a liar . I bought 5w 20 full Synthetic oil and filters on 12 occasions from Walmart that Fit my 2013 KIA Motor The weight was recommended by KIA and the Filters rated at 10K miles . Have worked on My cars since I was [XXX] old have thousands of dollars in tools. I do what ever maintenance that is still possible to do on newer cars . Brakes , Filters Fluid changes tire rotations Ect . If KIA would have mentioned in the Warrenty you need to take Videos I would have . Why are not receipts enough? Also the way the oil looks rite now ?? Clean on the dipstick. Have talked to 3 different car service technicians. And they said the same thing. If that motor was not maintained the oil would not look that good. I asked the dealer for the video that the technician does when they told me what I already knew. I paid 230 dollars for the diagnostic, They sent the video to KIA tech line. KIA told me I have to get a subpoena . To get a copy.. Does that tell you they may be hiding something?? So I have brought this to the attention of 3 different KIA dealers. They said hands are tied to to KIA tech line . My 2013 KIA Sportage looks as good if not better then some cars 3 years old .Everything works except The 2.4 liter motor with bad rod bearings. The car died while my Wife was driving it while at a stop light at a busy intersection. No light on dash no warning. What if it quit when she was at a high speed. No power steering, no power brakes??That is dangerous . This happened on September 4 2025, towed straight to the KIA Dealer . ENGINE FAILED DUE TO BEARING FAILURE

WHILE DRIVING CAR THE ENGINE CEASED CAUSING THE CAR TO STALL WITH CHILD IN THE CAR. THE CAR WITH ONLY 72,000 MILES ON IT WAS TAKEN TO KIA WHO REFUSED TO FIX THE ENGINE UNDER WARRANTY. WAS TOLD THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS FOR THIS SAME ISSUE WITH OTHER 2013 KIA SPORTAGE CARS BUT THIS VIN WAS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE ENGINE RECALL. THIS CAR ENGINE PROBLEM IS A DANGER AND COULD EASILY HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS CRASH OR DEATH WITH THE CAR STALLING WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD. KIA OBVIOUSLY HAS A KNOWN MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN THERE ENGINES, BUT CONTINUE TO LET PEOPLE PUT THEIR LIVES IN JEOPARDY BY NOT RECALLING THEIR ENGINES.

MY 2013 KIA SPORTAGE HAS 67,000 MILES ON IT AND THE RIGHT FRON AXEL HAS BROKEN, ADDITIONALLY THEY THINK THE TRANSMISSION MAY BE BAD AND THEY SAY MY BREAK PADS, ROTERS AND TIRES ARE BAD. I PURCHASED TWO TIRES IN 2016 AND TWO IN 2017 AND DRIVE APPROXIMATELY 10,000 MILES A YEAR. THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND I AM A VERY SAFE DRIVER. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST SAFETY ISSUE I HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH THIS CAR, TWICE THE DRIVER FRONT DOOR COULD NOT BE OPENED, THEY FIXED THAT AT NO COST BUT THE FACT THAT IT HAPPENED TWICE AND COULD BE SO DANGEROUS SHOULD BE NOTED. SUPPOSEDLY I HAVE A 100,000 - 10 YEAR LIMITED POWER TRAIN WARRANTY BUT THEY ARE TELLING ME I HAVE TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING AND THAT THEY WON'T KNOW ABOUT TRANSMISSION UNTIL THEY REPLACE AXLE. I received a recall notification last year, I live about an hr and a half away from the nearest Kia dealer, so I wasn’t able to get my car in to be inspected until last spring at the Kia in Medford. Then I got another notice in the mail stating my vehicle was amongst the ones that needed the HECU recall service done. I called the Kia dealer in Eugene and the earliest they could get me in was August 2024. A day or two before my long awaited appointment, they called to inform me that the part was on back order and that they would call me once it became available again. I haven’t received any communication from them as of yet. My car has been mostly parked since then and I’ve been borrowing a friends vehicle because I don’t want to risk my daughter and i’s safety. I received another notice from the corporate of Kia, stating I haven’t gotten it done and they strongly urge me to get it taken care of, I’ve tried booking another appointment online twice and there’s no availability and I’ve called 3 times with no return call. On the last notice I received, I see it says to submit a complaint to safercar.gov

Hecu needs to be replaced. This is a dangerous recall and it has almost been one year and it hasn't been resolved because the parts arent available.. I have children in my car and they tell me a fire could start while driving or parked. So, they will see the urgency in getting this part to us, after people have died? I am really upset that this is not being taken seriously when peoples lives could be at stake.

ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO MY 2013 KIA SPORTAGE STARTED ACTING UP AS FAR AS THE AIR CONDITIONER GOES. IT INTERMITTENTLY WORKS. IF I AM STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN THE CAR WILL BLOW HOT AIR. WHEN DRIVING IT WILL NOT BLOW COLD AIR UNLESS I'M GOING AT LEAST 60 MPH. LIVING IN FLORIDA THIS IS HORRIBLE. I HAVE TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES FOR THEM TO TELL ME IT'S FINE. THEY "TEST DRIVE" IT TO SEE AND SUPPOSEDLY THE TSTAT THEY PUT IN THE CAR SAID IT WAS BLOWING AIR 63 DEGREES. THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME $110 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC FEE. LUCKILY THE MECHANIC UNDERSTOOD WHERE I WAS COMING FROM AND DIDN'T END UP PAYING. THEN AS SOON AS I LEFT IT WASN'T WORKING. I THEN TODAY TAKE IT BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND THEY TELL ME THE COMPRESSOR IS BAD AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED! I HAVE READ WHERE SEVERAL OTHERS ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE.

I bought my car and then I received a letter stating that it had 1 recall. I called KIA to schedule the recall and they said there are 4 in total. I told them to get them all done because the closes KIA is about 45 min from my house. I took it in KIA called me said everything was done that I could go pick up my car. Then on 7/19/25 I am driving in the highway and my car stops accelerating I pull over turn off my car let it cool off and turn it back on. It moves and the moment I try to accelerate it the car stops again. Thank God I was able to arrive to a gas satiation at an exit and not have someone crash into me. I tried jump starting it and nothing. I tried turning it on again and smoke stated coming out from the engine. I had to tow the car to my house. I called my mechanic to check it and 3 codes showed up (C1611, C1612, C1613). I called KIA to let them know the codes and that I needed them to tow my car to their dealership. They proceed to inform me that 1 of the recalls were not fixed (the fuse) had to ordered and was not done. No one had informed me that when I picked up my car. They are not wanting to give me a solution and I have called 3 days straight.

UPON TAKING TO DEALERSHIP FOR TESTING, I AM TOLD BATTERY/ALTERNATOR OPERATES FINE AND THEY WILL CHARGE ABOUT 85/HOUR TO TEST FUSES TO SEE WHAT ELSE COULD BE THE PROBLEM. APPROXIMATELY 3/23/3018, MY RADIO SHORTED OUT. IT IS NOT FUNCTIONING AT ALL, CANNOT USE RADIO AT ALL NOR BLUETOOTH CONNECTIVITY CONTROL. NOW THE ODOMETER RESETS TO 0 EVERY TIME I TURN THE CAR ON, THE AUTOMATIC LOCKS DON'T WORK AND TPM STAYS LIT NO MATTER WHAT THE ACTUAL TPM IS. . THE DESIGN OF THE IGNITION KEY IS FAULTY. THIS VEHICLE ONLY STARTS WITH A PROXIMITY INTERFACE BETWEEN THE INTERIOR STARTER BUTTON AND THE REMOTE KEY WHICH IS ATTACHED TO A MANUAL KEY FOR THE DOORS. THE MANUAL DOOR KEY ATTACHES TO A KEY RING AND THE EXPENSIVE REOMTE KEY ATTACHES TO THE MANUAL KEY. ON 5 DIFFERENT OCASIONS WHILE WALKING OR EXITING MY CAR THE REMOTE KEY HAS SEPERATED FROM THE MANUAL KEY AND FALLEN TO THE GROUND. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY AND BEEN AWARE OF THIS WHEN IT HAS HAPPENED. THIS COULD EASLIY LEAVE ME STRANDED AND IN DANGER DUE TO THIS DESIGN. THE KEY RING HOLDER SHOULD BE ATTACHED THE REMOTE DEVICE AND NOT THE MANUAL KEY. THE DEALER OFFERED NO SOLUTION.

Was driving on the interstate at approximately 80 MPH went to slow down for a slow car in the fast lane and lost power in the middle of traffic. Check engine light began flashing. Upon a check of the check engine code it gave a known recall with a number of kias in this model and year range covered with lifetime engine replacement. Error code P-1326 glow relay stuck on. Considering my fuel combustion engine does not have a glow relay this should fall under the already known covered issues and be extended to my vehicle

In 2022, my 2013 Kia Sportage (VIN: [XXX] ) experienced a spontaneous engine compartment fire while parked. I was unaware of any existing recalls at the time. The vehicle was stationary and turned off when the incident occurred. I extinguished the fire myself. There was no crash involved, but the damage rendered the vehicle inoperable. I later discovered that this exact vehicle is subject to Recall 23V652000, related to an electrical short in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) that can result in an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is parked or driving. As of now, the recall remains open and unrepaired under this VIN. I was never notified of this critical safety recall before the incident. Kia’s authorized dealer in Puerto Rico (MOTORAMBAR) confirmed the recall but declined responsibility for the damage already caused, offering only the standard fuse replacement. I have submitted a written complaint to Kia and am now documenting this safety failure with NHTSA. This fire was not caused by misuse or wear-and-tear — it occurred under normal conditions and clearly matches the exact language of the recall defect. I believe this represents a serious failure of notification and manufacturer accountability. I am seeking resolution and accountability through both Kia and the NHTSA. AFTER HAVING AN UPGRADE TO THE SYSTEM OUR CAR NOW GOES INTO LIMP MODE. THEY HAVE CHANGED SEVERAL PARTS AND $4,000.00 LATER THEY STILL CAN NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY JUST KEEP CHARGING US FOR DIFFERENT PARTS AND OUR CAR STILL GOES INTO LIMP MODE EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE SAID THEY HAVE FIXED IT. WHILE DRIVING AT 65MPH MY KIA SPORTAGE WENT DEAD. I PULLED OVER ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TRIED TO START IT AGAIN BUT IT WOULD NOT START. AFTER THAT, SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE KIA WAS TOWED TO THE KIA DEALERSHIP AND CHECKED BY MECHANICS, WHO SAID THAT THE ROD BEARING WENT BAD AND IT SEIZED THE ENGINE. THE STARTER WAS ALSO FRIED IN THE PROCESS. KIA AGREED TO REPLACE THE PARTS BUT WOULD NOT AGREE TO PAY THE APPROXIMATELY $2500 LABOR COST. THE VEHICLE STILL SITS AT THE DEALERSHIP AWAITING REPAIR. IT'S BEEN OVER 2 MONTHS NOW. I PLAN TO PURSUE HAVING KIA PAY FOR THE LABOR AS WELL. I NOW OWE $7000 ON A CAR THAT WILL NOT RUN.

My daughter has a 2013 Kia Sporage. Last week she was driving and the engine kept cutting off on the highway. She has had the recalled engine replaced last year and has 33,000 miles on it. When we took it to be checked out the guy said it could be the timing chain. The dealership said that was unlikely. It sounds like it’s not getting gas, so we put fuel injector cleaner in and it still isn’t running.

The contact owns a 2013 Kia Sportage. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the ABS warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed gas cap. The contact was informed that the gas cap needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred after a month. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the gas cap was replaced a second time, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that he recently received notification NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V652000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The contact stated the vehicle was scheduled for a appointment at the dealer in several days. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.

While driving on the highway there was a 'pop' sound and then the smell of smoke. After pulling over to the side of the highway, roughly 20 seconds later, smoke was pouring out of the front of the vehicle and within a minute it was engulfed in flames.

I WAS DRIVING AT 45MPH, WENT INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE TO PASS A VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE REVVED INTO THE 7000RPM RANGE, ALL THE LIGHTS CAME ON IN THE DASH, AND IT IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE STOPPED. I TRIED TO RESTART THE ENGINE AND IT WOULDN'T EVEN CRANK OVER. NO WARNING LIGHTS HAD COME ON PRIOR TO THIS AND MY OIL IS CHANGED REGULARLY. THE ENGINE IS NOW "LOCKED" UP. I AM READING THIS HAS BEEN A FREQUENT PROBLEM, BUT MY VEHICLE VIN SHOWS NO RECALLS. THIS WAS ON A 55MPH HIGHWAY, WHILE PASSING AT APPROXIMATELY 55MPH.

AROUND THANKSGIVING I NOTICED A KNOCKING/ RATTLING/ CLANKING SOUND UNDER MY HOOD IN THE ENGINE AREA, WHICH OCCASIONALLY INCREASED/DECREASED WHEN THE RPMS MOVED. DUE TO COVID AND NOT TRAVELING I DIDNT DRIVE IT FOR A FEW DAYS. I WENT TO THE STORE ON 11/30 AND THE SOUND WAS LOUDER AND MORE STARTLING. I HAD MY HUSBAND CHECK IT WHEN HE GOT HOME. WE NOTICED RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE BUT MY VIN NEVER REGISTERED. BECAUSE MY VEHICLE IS USED TO TRANSPORT CHILDREN, MY HUSBAND ASKED ME TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALERSHIP ASAP TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. I MADE THE APPOINTMENT FOR 12/1. WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY TO GET TO MY APPOINTMENT THE SOUND PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE - THEN ALL LIGHTS WENT ON IN THE DASH AND THE GAS STOPPED WORKING. IT WAS LIKE MY VEHICLE WAS IN NEUTRAL WHEN I PRESSED THE GAS. IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED. I WAITED OVER AN HOUR FOR A TOW TRUCK; ON THE SHOULDER OF A BUSY HIGHWAY, DURING RUSH HOUR. IT WAS DROPPED AT THE DEALER AND WE ARE CURRENTLY WAITING ON A REPORT AS TO WHATS WRONG. WE BELIEVE IT FALLS IN LINE WITH THE CURRENT RECALLS.

I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE DRIVING AROUND 70 MILES PER HOUR MY CAR DIED AS IN STOPPED IN FRONT OF A SEMI! MY CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY AND HAD NO PROBLEMS -NOTHING-NO NOISE IT JUST DIED. WE ARE LUCKY I WAS NOT KILLED. CAR WAS TOWED TO COOKEVILLE KIA THEY SAID IT WAS INTERNAL ENGINE FAILURE POSSIBLE ROD BEARING. HE TOLD US IT WOULD COST AROUND $7000 TO FIX. I STILL OWE 4000 ON MY PIECE OF CRAP OF A CAR THAT ONLY HAD 130,000MILES ON IT. I HAVE HAD A FEW NIGHTMARES FROM THE ORDEAL AND IN GENERAL, I'M KINDA SCARED TO DRIVE EVEN A FEW DAYS LATER. I HAVE HAD MY VEHICLE LOOKED AT NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE I BOUGHT IT 3 YEARS AGO. THERE IS A ODD THUMPING/HUMMING LIKE SOUND COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OR AXLE AREA, WHILE DRIVING, AT ANY SPEED. NOTHING HAS BEEN FOUND. MY VEHICLE SHAKES OCCASIONALLY WHILE DRIVING OVER 45 MPH. MY AIR PRESSURE LIGHT CONTINUES TO BE ON CONSTANTLY, EVEN AFTER SHELLING OUT THE MONEY TO HAVE THE SENSORS REPLACED. I ALWAYS FEEL LIKE I HAVE FLAT TIRES, ALTHOUGH THEY SEEM FINE WHEN I CHECK THEM. I AM CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY, MY CHILDREN AND OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD WHILE I AM DRIVING. I HAVE SEARCHED NUMEROUS TIMES FOR RECALLS AND FOUND NOTHING FOR MY VIN. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD BY A DEALER THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR SAFETY CAMPAIGN (SOME UNDERBODY ADDL ANTI-CORROSION: SL). I HAVE HAD MY RADIO HEAD UNIT REPLACED AS IT WAS GLITCHING WHEN USING BACKUP CAMERA. THE RADIO STOPPED PLAYING THROUGH THE SPEAKERS, ALTHOUGH IT STILL SHOWED I HAD FULL CONTROL OVER THE VOLUME AND TOGGLING STATIONS. MY PHONE WOULD CONNECT VIA BLUETOOTH BUT I WAS UNABLE TO USE IT. I FEEL MY VEHICLE IS PART OF MANY RECALLS THAT HAVE PREVIOUSLY AFFECTED AND ARE CURRENTLY AFFECTING MANY KIA'S AND WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT IF IT CAN BE ADDED TO THE LIST SO I CAN HAVE A SAFE VEHICLE TO DRIVE AROUND FOR MY FAMILY. WHEN I RETURNED TO MY SPORTAGE AROUND 3:30 PM I NOTICED THE FRONT SUNROOF GLASS PANEL WAS COMPLETELY SHATTERED. IT LOOKED LIKE AN EXPLOSION HAPPENED. NOTHING FELL ON THE GLASS, NO VANDALISM. THIS PROBLEM STARTED A FEW WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE AND HAS PERSISTED EVER SINCE DESPITE 3 REPAIR ATTEMPTS AT KIA DEALERSHIPS (22AUG2012, 07JAN2013, 30JAN2013). BECAUSE IT IS INTERMITTENT (OCCURRING ONCE OR TWICE EVERY COUPLE WEEKS) AND WITHOUT AN OBVIOUS PATTERN, THE DEALERSHIPS HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE SMELL ON THE DAYS WE'VE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN. ON THE 3RD REPAIR VISIT (30JAN2013), THE TECHNICIAN WAS "UNABLE TO VERIFY SMELL, BUT INSPECTED AND FOUND FUEL AROUND INTAKE AT THE FUEL INJECTOR BASES." THEY REPLACED O-RINGS TO ATTEMPT TO FIX THE ISSUE. FOR A WEEK OR SO WE THOUGHT THE ISSUE WAS FIXED, BUT SINCE THE 3RD VISIT HAVE ON AT LEAST FOUR OCCASIONS NOTICED A PROMINENT RAW GASOLINE SMELL IN THE CABIN. THE CLOSEST TO A PATTERN THAT WE'VE NOTICED IS THAT ON DAYS WHEN THE SMELL OCCURS, IT IS STRONGEST AND MOST OBVIOUS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IDLING WITH THE HEATER/AC FAN ON. WE ALSO THINK, BUT ARE NOT SURE, THAT THERE MAY BE A CORRELATION WITH DAYS INVOLVING PRECIPITATION (SNOW/RAIN). *TR
