The balance shaft sprocket in this car needs to be recalled. It has has known issues since it came out nearly 20 years ago. It can cause your whole engine to blow if not fixed. The fix is often more than the value of the car, around $7000. It is ridiculous. The part was not properly heat treated during manufacture which causes it to fail prematurely at the expense of the owner.

The car randomly misfires and goes into limp mode with a flashing check engine light. This has occurred on roadways and the vehicle loses all engine power. My engine code, 272920 30 183997272.920, falls into a known range of balance shaft gear problems with this motor. There was previously a settlement by the manufacturer to repair the motor but I was unaware of this settlement before purchasing this vehicle as there was no official recall. I am being told the repair requires pulling the motor out which is quite a high cost. The problem has been confirmed by an independent mechanic inspecting the camshaft timing. There were no other indicators of this failure before the check engine light came on and flashed.

The contact owns a 2006 Mercedes-Benz C280. The contact stated that while driving at 25 MPH and the vehicle in front stopped as a result the contact rear-ended the vehicle. The contact stated that the front passenger and driver's side air bags were deployed with excessive force. The contact stated that the front driver's side and passenger side headrest restraint air bags were deployed. The contact stated that the driver in the vehicle in front was transported to the hospital by ambulance for a back injury. The contact stated that her son sought medical attention a month later for eye irritation. The front passenger sustained eye injuries that lead to blindness which eventually lead to his passing. The driver sustained burns on both arms and fingertips that did not require medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed from the scene. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or independent mechanic for diagnosis or repairs. The contact stated that the air bags were not replaced as she cut them out and was still driving today without air bags. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, her vehicle was not included in a recall. The contact also stated that a month later while driving the sunroof detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic that replaced the sunroof however, the failure cause was not diagnosed. The contact stated that she believed the sunroof failure was due to the excessive force of the air bag deployment. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

I WAS TOLD TO FILE HERE IF THERE WAS NO REMEDY ON THE SAFETY RECALL AND THERE WASN'T. THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL IN FEBRUARY 2016 FOR MY TAKATA AIRBAG AND TO THIS DATE, THERE IS NO AVAILABLE REMEDY. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. I JUST CHECKED ONLINE AND STATUS IS SAME NO REMEDY -INCOMPLETE.

AFTER HAVING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON, WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WE PURCHASED IT FROM TO PERFORM A DIAGNOSTIC AFTER RECEIVING CODES P0170 AND P0173 (MB CODES 2092/2096) WHICH MB CLASSIFIES AS "MIXTURE IN RIGHT / LEFT CYLINDER BANK IS TOO RICH WHEN IDLING" AND WERE TOLD WE WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD FOR $2110. THE EXPLANATION WE RECEIVED (VERBAL ONLY AS THEY REFUSED TO DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM IN WRITING AFTER ASKING MULTIPLE TIMES) WAS THAT A BUSHING THAT CONTROLS THE AIR FLOW VALVES WAS WORN. THEY COULD NOT PROVIDE A REASON AS TO WHAT WOULD CAUSE THIS WEAR CONSIDERING THE BUSHING IS INTERNAL TO THE CONTROL VALVES. THEY ALSO COULD NOT TELL ME WHICH SPECIFIC SIDE THIS LEAK WAS COMING FROM. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON INTERSTATE 95 IN POMPANO BEACH FLORIDA, THE CAR STARTED TO RUN ROUGH AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BECAME ILLUMINATED. TOOK THE CAR TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND IT CAME UP WITH 2 CODES 1200 AND 1208 INTAKE AND EXHAUST CAMSHAFT SENSOR RIGHT CYLINDER, THE MECHANICS REPLACED THE 2 SENSORS AND A COUPLE WEEKS LATER IT APPEARED AGAIN. THE ORIGINAL MECHANIC RECOMMENDED ANOTHER SHOP THAT SPECIALIZED IN MERCEDES. I TOOK IT THERE A FEW WEEKS LATER AND WE WERE INFORMED IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE MERCEDES AND THAT THEY WERE BEING SUED FOR IT,AND MERCEDES HAS PUT OUT OVER 10 TSB ON THE ISSUE AND IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO CARS WITH THIS NEW ENGINE. The contact owns a 2006 Mercedes-Benz C230. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH, the transmission failed to shift, and the transmission appeared to be frozen in the 2nd gear. The contact stopped and turned off the vehicle and shifted into park (P); when the vehicle was restarted and shifted into drive (D), the vehicle was lunging and jerking. The contact stated that it was difficult to shift from drive (D) to park (P) or reverse (R), because the vehicle would lunge in the direction the transmission was shifted. WHEN DRIVING MY '06 C350 WITH 48 THOUSAND MILES, YES 48K ON IT, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO GO INTO A SAFE MODE. IT NORMALLY OCCURS WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND HAVE TO SLOW DOWN GRADUALLY, THEN UPON ACCELERATION THE TRANSMISSION JUST REVS UP THE RPM WITH NO POWER. I'M AFRAID ME AND MY TWO CHILDREN WILL BE REAR-ENDED DUE TO THE LOSS OF POWER IN THE TRANSMISSION. I THEN TRY TO DRIVE IT TO THE NEXT EXIT, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART. THIS NORMALLY RESETS EVERYTHING TO NORMAL. BUT IT COULD OCCUR AGAIN MINUTES OR HOURS LATER WHICH IS NOW GETTING FRUSTRATING GIVEN THE CAR IS BARELY REACHING 50K MILES. SO THIS HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY, UNEXPECTEDLY, AND WITH VARYING FREQUENCY. MERCEDES BENZ USA SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS AS WHEN I CALL THE DEALERSHIP THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED AND IT'S A VERY WELL-KNOW DEFECT THAT COSTS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT TO REPAIR. THIS CAR STARTED DOING IT AT 40K AND DOES IT OFTEN. At 9,000 miles my 2006 Mercedes C350 had to have a fuel pump replaced. It was out of warranty (low miles usage for 5 year old car) so I had to pay $900 for the repair. I could smell fuel everytime I filled the tank and the Mercedes dealer said the pump had to be replaced. I read about a recall of E350 models being recalled for the same reason with the same engine. I asked the dealer about this and they said mine was not part of the recall because it is a C class Mercedes. It has the same engine with the same problem and I think this should be looked into.

VERY STRONG FUEL ODOR INSIDE CABIN OF VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. ODOR IS VERY STRONG AROUND DRIVERS REAR WHEEL AND FROM THE OUTSIDE ONCE PARKED. SMELL OF FUEL IS VERY STRONG AT TIMES WHILE DRIVING BUT SEEMS TO DISSIPATE WHEN DRIVING AT A FASTER SPEED I.E. ON HIGHWAY OVER 45MPH. IN JULY 2009, AFTER FILLING MY VEHICLE WITH GASOLINE (38,000 MILES), I DROVE HOME, PARKED MY VEHICLE IN MY GARAGE AND EXITED THE INTERIOR. AFTER EXITING, I SMELLED THE VERY STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE EMITTING FROM, WHAT APPEARED THE REAR OF THE CAR. I DID NOT SEE ANY LEAKS OR ANY EVIDENCE OF FUEL, SO I WENT INSIDE MY HOUSE. SEVERAL HOURS LATER, I ENTERED MY GARAGE AND WAS IMMEDIATELY OVERWHELMED WITH THE FUMES OF GASOLINE. I CHECKED MY CAR AGAIN, BUT WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY LEAKS. I THEN OPEN MY CAR DOOR AND THE FUMES WERE EVEN STRONGER. AFTER LOOKING AROUND, I NOTICED THE ODOR WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE REAR SEAT. FEARING AN EXPLOSION MAY OCCUR, I OPENED MY GARAGE DOORS AND CAR DOOR AND TURNED ON SEVERAL FANS TO "AIR-OUT" THE AREA. THE NEXT DAY, I DROVE TO THE DEALER AND EXPLAINED. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MY YEAR AND MODEL AND SAID THE FUEL GASKETS WERE BAD ON TOP OF THE GAS TANK WHICH IS RIGHT UNDER THE BACK SEAT. HE EXPLAINED WHEN FILLING UP, THE SEALS LEAK, BECOME SATURATED WITH FUEL AND EVEN SATURATE THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE SEAT. HE SAID IF I WANTED IT FIXED, IT WOULD BE AN ESTIMATED $500. HE ALSO SAID IF I DID NOT WANT TO PAY TO FIX IT, HE SUGGESTED I ONLY FILL MY TANK TO 3/4 SO THE SEALS WOULD NOT BECOME WET. I EXPLAINED TO HIM THAT MY CAR WAS STILL LIKE NEW WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES AND MBZ SHOULD FIX THE MANUFACTURER DEFECT AT NO CHARGE. HE REFUSED. I CONTINUE TO DEAL WITH THIS DANGEROUS, FAULTY ISSUE TODAY. MY CAR ONLY HAS 79,000 MILES ON IT AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO GET WORSE. I NOTICED SEVERAL OTHERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED, HOWEVER, I DO NOT KNOW THEIR STATUS. CAN YOU PLEASE ASSIST ME WITH THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE. I have a 2006 Mercedes C280 which I purchased almost a year ago with 57,000 miles. It currently has 73,000 miles and is having major mechanical problems which have been life threatening due to when and where they occur. 1. Loss of transmission upon acceleration. If I pull over, turn it off and restart, it will shift fine until it decides it wants to do it again and I either lose the ability to shift, or it goes into limp mode without a Check engine light. This has happened on the freeway, heavy traffic, and have been several close calls. The shop said the codes were for transmission malfunction and valve body malfunction. Just out of nowhere. 2. Check engine light goes on and off repeatedly and The plastic intake manifold needs to be replaced because it is one of the defects Mercedes was sued for on this particular year, model, and engine. All of the oxygen sensors are going out as well and that is just the start. The cost for the part alone is in the $1000 range. My mechanic said the best is yet to come and explained around my current mileage on up is when most of the damage takes place with the valves and whatever else happened with this engine. I'm not sure exactly what all the problems were but he said to take it to the junkyard and was very serious which infuriates me because it's a beautiful car and I couldn't in good conscience sell it to anyone. Mercedes is fully aware of this but not a lot of people benefited from the settlement. The same problems are known by all owners and German mechanics.

CONTACTED MERCEDES BENZ WHICH INDICATED IT WOULD OFFER NO ASSISTANCE IN REPAIR OF THIS PROBLEM. INTERNET RESEARCH SHOWS A CONSISTENT PROBLEM WITH THE YEAR AND C-CLASS VEHICLES. OTHER RESEARCH INDICATES A DEFECT IN THE BALANCE SHAFT USED BY MERCEDES BENZ IN THIS MODEL AND OTHER MODELS. MERCEDES BENZ ISSUED A SERVICE NOTIFICATION ABOUT THIS PROBLEM IN 2008. While driving at approximately 70 mph on a highway, the rear subframe of the vehicle suddenly and catastrophically failed. This caused the vehicle to fishtail violently and nearly led to a serious highway accident. I was able to regain control and pull off the road safely, but the vehicle was no longer drivable and had to be towed. An inspection by a certified technician confirmed that the rear subframe rusted from the inside and experienced a complete structural failure. One of the suspension control arms even broke off of the subframe due to rust. The vehicle showed no warning lights or symptoms prior to the incident. The road was dry and free of potholes or debris, and the car had been properly maintained and garage-kept for the prior 16 years. This issue is a known defect in Mercedes-Benz vehicles of similar design. Mercedes-Benz has extended the subframe warranty for C-Class vehicles from model years 2008–2015 due to widespread internal subframe corrosion. However, this vehicle (2006 model year) is not covered, despite experiencing the same failure. The corrosion originated from inside the subframe, indicating a manufacturing or materials defect rather than environmental exposure. This failure posed a severe risk to my safety and the safety of others, especially since it occurred at highway speeds without warning. The problem has been documented in other vehicles and is the subject of a current class-action lawsuit (Case § 1:23-cv-00636 in the state of Georgia).

Our car was recalled on 07/03/2008, recall #08V303000, for problems relating to a number of types of mechanical and electrical malfunctions. One was the "(3) OBD SYSTEM MAY CAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE INCORRECTLY; AND (4) THE SPEEDODOMETER MAY BE OUT OF TOLERANCE" This vehicle has had a malfunctioning "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT", that needs to be corrected. It prevents the car from being properly registered, and the warning being on is a distraction to drivers. It has been unresolved by Mercedes and by other mechanics who could not make the proper repair of the "Check Engine Light" issue that was listed in the recall. Mercedes has failed to make the repair, associated with this recall and states that the recall #08V303000 of 07/03/2008 is expired. The car had had recent additional recall work done, and this problem was brought up, but not addressed nor corrected by Mercedes. There has been difficulty in our obtaining Connecticut vehicle emissions approval, and Connecticut registration renewal due to the unaddressed problem by Mercedes. We cannot re-register the vehicle out of Connecticut until this issue is resolved. If we chose the sale of the vehicle, we would have to provide the purchaser a clear and registerable vehicle. Without your assistance in the resolution of this matter that would be impossible to do.

STARTED VEHICLE AND WHEN IN MOTION, I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL, THE VEHICLE SHUDDERED AND MADE A LOUD GRINDING NOISE. CHECKED STEERING FLUID, AND IT WAS BELOW THE MINIMUM FLUID LEVEL. REFILLED STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR TO PROPER LEVELS AND VEHICLE NO LONGER MADE ANY NOISES OR STRUGGLED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. SEVERAL DAYS LATER THE NOISE AND DIFFICULTY STEERING RETURNED WHEN IN MOTION AND TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. CHECK STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR AND IT WAS BELOW THE MINIMUM FILL REQUIREMENT. INSPECTED BELOW THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS A LOT OF STEERING FLUID COVERING PASSENGER SIDE SUSPENSION SYSTEM AND SLOWLY DRIPPING FROM THAT AREA. POSSIBLE LEAK FROM PRESSURE HOSE. CONTACTED MULTIPLE MERCEDES-BENZ DEALERSHIPS FOR PART # 209-466-00-81 PRESSURE HOSE AND IT WAS NOT AVAILABLE. IT IS ON WORLD WIDE BACK ORDER WITH NO TENTATIVE DATE FOR REPLACEMENT. I'M NOW UNABLE TO DRIVE VEHICLE DUE TO AN UNAVAILABLE PART WITH NO DATE ON WHEN I COULD DRIVE DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE LEAK SEEMS TO BE DRIPPING ONTO THE FRONT SWAY BAR WITH ABOUT A DROP PER MINUTE. THIS CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT AND NEARLY CHANGED LANES AND ALMOST HIT ANOTHER CAR DURING A SPLIT SECOND OF LOOKING AT THE GAS GAUGE AND NOT DOWN THE ROAD. I TOOK THE CAR INTO MZB WITH THE COMPLAINT. THEY SAID IT WAS MY DRIVING HABIT. LATER THEY SAID IT WAS THE CURVE OF THE ROAD. STILL LATER THEY SAID IT WAS THE TIRES NOT INFLATED. AS I CONTINUED TO ASK FOR HELP ON THIS ISSUE AND SEVERAL TIMES BRINGING IT BACK TO THE DEALER THEY FINALLY SAID THAT A MZB REP WILL GO WITH ME ON A TEST RIDE. DURING THE TEST RIDE I STATED THAT AT ANY MOMENT YOU ASK I WILL LET GO OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE CAR WILL TURN TO THE RIGHT. AFTER SEVERAL OF THESE DEMONSTRATIONS TO HIM HE THEN HELD THE WHEEL HIMSELF AND FELT THE PULL. HE AGREED WITH ME THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. UPON RETURNING TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY MET IN A MEETING WITHOUT ME AND BEGAN TO DO THIS AND THAT WITH THE CAR ON THE RACK. I ASKED WHAT ARE YOU DOING? THEY TOLD ME MINOR ADJUSTMENTS. LATER THE CAR WAS RELEASED TO ME AND IN FACT THE PROBLEM WAS BETTER HOWEVER NOT CORRECTED. THIS CAR HAS A TERRIBLE PROBLEM AND DOES NOT RUN DOWN THE ROAD STRAIGHT SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW. We received a recall notice on our Mercedes stating that over time the bonding in the glass panel and sunroof frame might deteriorate over time and cause the glass to separate from the vehicle. On 02/06/25, my son brought his car into the Mercedes dealership in Lafayette, Indiana to take care of the recall. The service tech signed off on the recall and told him everything was ok. On 02/21/25, he was driving down the highway and the entire glass part of the sunroof flew off behind him! Luckily there wasn’t a driver behind him. He was very startled and could’ve swerved off the road causing injury to himself or others. If someone was behind him they could’ve been injured or even killed. We called the dealership immediately. The service manager told my husband that they checked the glass on the roof and our car was not part of the recall and there was nothing they could do! Since that day, (one month) we have been trying to get SOMEONE to help us. We have contacted the GM at the dealership, talked to 3 people at Mercedes corporate only to be hung up on once and put on hold for 45 minutes the other time. To this day we are unable to get anyone to address the issue. The NHTSA clearly stated our vehicle is part of this recall yet the dealership is stating the glass number wasn’t listed. Obviously our vehicle is part of the recall considering what happened!

I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND $795.00 THEY CLAIMED I NEEDED FOR BOTH BRAKES AND ROTORS WHICH I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND SINCE 6 MONTHS PRIOR THE ROTORS HAD BEEN REPLACED. I AGAIN HAD TO HAVE THE ROTORS AND BREAKS REPLACED IN JULY 2012 AS WELL AS THE BACK BREAKS BUT THIS TIME I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER PLACE OTHER THAN THE DEALER AND HERE IT IS 2014 AND THEY ARE STILL HOLDING AND THE COST WAS $495.00 FOR BOTH FRONT AND BACK AS WELL 4 NEW MICHELIN TIRES THE DEALER WANTED TO CHARGE ME $495.00 FOR THE BACK ALONE. THE THIRD INCIDENT OCCURRED IN LAS VEGAS I WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND THE CAR SHUT OFF. IT STARTED BACK RIGHT AWAY BUT I HAD A TEN HOUR DRIVE TO MAKE IT HOME AND THIS WORRIED ME. HAVING PROBLEM WITH THE GEAR SHIFTING, BELIEVE THIS IS CAUSED BY THE SHAFT BALANCER, ETC. THE CAR GRABS AND JERKS FROM TIME TO TIME MAKING ME UNSURE OF THE SAFETY OF MY CAR. MY CAR ONLY HAS 84,000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS LIKE NEW, BUT AS I READ THE CLASS ACT AGAINST MERCEDES I NOTICED THAT MY CAR HAS SEVERAL OF THE SAME ISSUES AS OTHERS LISTED IN THE COMPLAINT. THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF MY CAR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THE MERCEDES COMPANY WOULD ALLOW AN ERROR LIKE THIS TO CONTINUE. PERIODICALLY THE CAR WOULD LOSE ACCELERATION AND RPMS WOULD BE HIGH AND THE VEHICLE WOULD JERK WHEN I TRIED CHANGING GEARS. AS I CHANGE GEARS FROM PARK, REVERSE OR DRIVE, THE GEAR SHIFT JERKS AND I AM UNABLE TO ACCELERATE PAST 20 MPH NO MATTER HOW MUCH PRESSURE I PLACE ON THE GAS. : EXTREME LOSS OF ACCELERATION UP HILL AND THE STEPTRONIC (+/- SHIFTING) DID NOT WORK... (I COULD ONLY GO 35MPH WHEN EVERY ONE ELSE WAS GOING 70MPH UP HILL) WHEN I TRAVELED ON A FLAT SURFACE WITH NO INCLINATION MY CAR WORKED FINE, I THEN DECIDED TO PUT IT ON NEUTRAL WHILE TRAVELING AT 65MPH...WHEN I PUT IT BACK IN DRIVE IT DID NOT PICK UP THE GEARS IT JUST CONTINUED AS IF IT WAS IN NEAUTRAL. I HAD TO PULL OVER AND SHIFT IT INTO PARK...AS I SHIFTED FORM "D" TO NEUTRAL IT SHIFTED FINE, BUT THEN FROM NEUTRAL TO "R" THE CAR JERKED...FROM REVERSE TO "P" IT JERKED AGAIN AND SHIFTED HARD. I THEN SHIFTED AGAIN TO REVERSE, NEUTRAL, AND DRIVE THUS THE CAR JERKED AND DID A HARD SHIFT WITH KNOCKING NOISE AND WOULD NOT DRIVE. I SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AGAIN AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON IT SHIFTED SMOOTH AND I DROVE OFF WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP AND RECEIVED P0717/P0718 FAULT CODES AND SOMETHING ABOUT THE VALVE BODY. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT IT WAS AN TRANSMISSION INTERNAL SPEED SENSOR ISSUE. THERE IS SOMETHING FAULTY WITH THE DESIGN AND OPERATION OF THIS MODEL YEAR TRANSMISSION AND LOSING POWER AND BEING ABLE TO ONLY GO 35 MPH NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU PRESS THE GAS ON THE INTERSTATE OR HEAVY FAST MOVING TRAFFIC IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY DURING MORNING RUSH HOUR WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 35 MPH. I MOVED THE CAR OFF THE HIGHWAY AND STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. ONCE I STOPPED THE CAR IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AT ALL WHEN I STEPPED ON THE GAS. I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND THEN MOVE IT BACK TO DRIVE TO GET THE CAR TO MOVE. THE CAR WOULD JUMP AND LURCH FORWARD WHEN I SHIFTED GEARS. I DROVE THE CAR DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER. THE MERCEDES DEALER TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE SOFTWARE AND THAT THE SOFTWARE WOULD NEED TO BE UPDATED. I WENT TO PICK UP MY CAR AFTER THE "SOFTWARE " WAS UPDATED ($1,700 COST) AND DROVE THE CAR ABOUT 10 MILES WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME ON. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE MERCEDES DEALER TO LET THEM KNOW THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS NOW ON. THE MERCEDES DEALER TOLD ME I HAVE A DEFECTIVE BALANCE SHAFT THAT NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED. THE MERCEDES DEALER ASK ME IF I HAD KEPT UP THE OIL CHANGES ON THE CAR. I TOLD THE THEM THAT I HAD. THE MERCEDES DEALER TOLD ME THAT I HAVE TO PAY $2,500 JUST FOR THEM TO TAKE THE ENGINE APART AND THAT THE TOTAL REPAIR WILL COST AROUND $6,000. I JUST PURCHASED THE CAR IN JULY 2010 ( 14 MONTHS OWNERSHIP) WITH ABOUT 19,500 MILES ON IT. *KB

BOUGHT THIS CAR WITH 38000 ON IT. THE GET UP AND GO SEEMED SLUGGISH BUT MECHANIC SAID IT CHECKED OUT. HAD SOME MAJOR ISSUES. CAR WOULD BARELY GO, WENT DIRECTLY TO MERCEDES DEALERSHIP. DEALER SAID FUEL PUMP WAS OUT $793. ALSO SAID I NEEDED TO SERVICE THE TRANSMISSION, $350. THEY ALSO SAID I HAD A MUCH GREATER PROBLEM. A BALANCE SHAFT INSIDE THE MOTOR AND QUOTED ME $4600. THE CAR NOW HAS 55,000 MILES ON IT. THE WARRANTY WAS FOR 4 YEARS OR 50,000. THE CAR IS ONE YEAR OR 5,000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY. IT IS HARD UNDERSTAND WHY THIS TYPE OF CATASTROPHIC FAILURE IS OCCURRING SO SOON AFTER THE WARRANTY IS UP. AT THE END OF JAN 2011, MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN MY 2006 C230 MERCEDES ' BENZ. I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET A DIAGNOSTIC INSPECTION ON FEB 1, 2011. THE INSPECTION DETERMINED THE VEHICLE NEEDED A BALANCE SHAFT. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 58,705 MILES ON IT AND WARRANTY EXPIRED ON IT AT 50,000 MILES. IF DRIVEN LONGER WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT ON, THE VEHICLE WOULD OF MALFUNCTION. THIS SAFETY ISSUE MAY OF CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO MISFIRE AND STOP DRIVING. MERCEDES ' BENZ USA HAS RECEIVED SEVERAL COMPLAINTS PERTAINING TO THIS ISSUE FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. ALSO, SEVERAL CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED ABOUT THIS ISSUE. A RECALL SHOULD BE PUT ON ENGINE M272 & M273 BALANCE SHAFT GEAR / IDLE GEAR. THIS DEFECT IN THE ENGINE IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND MAY CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT OR FATALITY. THE PRICING ON THE SERVICE IS REALLY RIDICULOUS. PARTS $ 478.15 AND LABOR $1946.26. THIS PRICE WAS A GOODWILL GESTURE.

THE FAILURE IN THIS CASE IS THE REPLACEMENT OF THE COUNTER BALANCE SHAFT ON A 2006 C230 MERCEDES BENZ WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. I'VE READ THAT MANY OF THESE FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED AND THE REASON FOR FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE SHAFT NOT HAVING PROPER HARDENING. I'VE ALSO READ THE MERCEDES BENZ IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS ABOUT $4500 ON A VEHICLE THAT THE WARRANTY GOES OUT IN 4 YEARS OR 50,000 MILES. ALL SERVICES TO THIS VEHICLE HAVE BEEN DONE AS REQUIRED, BUT NOT THROUGH THE DEALERSHIP. INFORMATION I'VE READ ABOUT THIS PROBLEM STATES THAT THERE'S NOTHING I COULD HAVE DONE TO KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING AND THAT IT'S HAPPENING TO MANY, MANY VEHICLES. THE MERCEDES CLK350 VIN [XXX]- THE PASSENGER SEAT AND DRIVER SEAT WHEN RELEASED TO ALLOW A REAR PASSENGER OUT OF THE CAR CAUSES THE HEAD REST TO AUTOMATICALLY DESCEND AND CAN TRAP THE REAR OCCUPANTS HAND IN PLACE AS IT DID WITH A 10 YEAR CHILD IN MY CAR. THE CONTROL TO RAISE THE HEADREST IS DISABLED WHEN THE SEAT IS IN THIS POSITION THEREBY NOT ALLOWING ANY METHOD TO RELEASE THE TRAPPED HAND. I BOUGHT A NEW 2006 C230 ON 2/27/2006 . I WAS DRIVING THIS CAR ON THE FREEWAY AT NIGHT AND AFTER 10-15 MINUTES OF DRIVING THE TIRE ON DRIVER REAR SIDE WAS SHREDDED. I REPLACED THIS TIRE WITH THE SPARE TIRE. AFTER ALL REMAINING TIRES WERE CHECKED THAT WERE GOOD TO DRIVE...I DROVE ANOTHER 15-20 MINS AND DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE SHREDDED. AT THIS TIME I HAD TO CALL AAA AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MERCEDES DEALERSHIP IN BEVERLY HILLS. THIS DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS SOMETHING HAD IMPACTED THE WHEELS OF THE CAR AND THAT SHREDDED THE TIRES. I ALSO LOOKED AT THE WHEELS MYSELF AND I DID NOT SEE ANY DAMAGE TO THE WHEELS WHERE THEY WERE POINTING TO SAYING THERE IS SLIGHT RAISED OR INDENTATION . THEY TOLD ME MERCEDES WILL NOT COVER FOR THE WARRANTY OF THE TIRES AND WHEELS. I FEEL THAT I DID NOT DO ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY WHILE DRIVING THIS CAR TO CAUSE THIS DAMAGE AND I SHOULD NOT BE AT FAULT FOR THIS AND THAT THE MERCEDES COMPANY SHOULD COVER THIS COST AND REIMBURSE THE COST OF WHEELS AND TIRES. THE COST OF THE PARTS WAS $1050 AND I PAID $1431 IN TOTAL TO THE DEALERSHIP AT BEVERLY HILLS. ALSO THE MERCEDES LOGO ON MY NEW WHEELS THAT WAS PUT ON IS RUSTED AND DOES NOT NEW WHILE THE OLD WHEELS THAT WERE NOT REPLACED HAVE THE MERCEDES LOGO THAT LOOKS NEW. MANY NEWER CARS ARE EQUIPPED WITH BLINDING, BLUE-GREEN, HEADLIGHTS THAT ARE A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE PROHIBITED. THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS. FIRST, WHEN SEEN FROM ANY ANGLE, THESE HEADLIGHTS ARE HIGHLY DISTRACTING, IN THAT THEY DRAW ONES EYES FROM THE ROAD AHEAD AND ON EITHER SIDE; THE REASON THAT THEY ARE DISTRACTING IS THAT THEY ARE OF A NOTABLY DIFFERENT COLOR AND ARE MUCH BRIGHTER THAN THE TRADITIONAL INCANDESCENT LIGHTS. SECOND, WHEN VIEWED FROM ANY ANGLE, THE LIGHT "FLARES" ABOUT ONES EYES, FORMING SPIKES THAT RADIATE OUTWARDS FROM THE LIGHT ITSELF, THEREBY OBSCURING ONE'S VIEW OF THINGS ABOVE, BELOW AND ON EITHER SIDE OF THE LIGHT ITSELF. THIRD, WHEN VIEWED FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, THE LIGHTS ARE OFTEN BLINDING, DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE ROAD IS FLAT OR HILLY, THE RESULT BEING TO OBSCURE ALMOST EVERYTHING AHEAD, ABOUT THE SAME AS TRADITIONAL INCANDESCENT LIGHTS ON "HIGH"BEAM. FOURTH, WHEN VIEWED FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION ON ROADWAYS THAT ARE NOT PERFECTLY LEVEL, THESE HEADLIGHTS ALTERNATE RAPIDLY, BACK AND FORTH, LIKE A STROBE LIGHT, BETWEEN "STANDARD" AND "BLINDING," A RESULT OF THE FACT (WHICH I ASSUME) THAT THE LIGHTS ARE VERY TIGHTLY FOCUSED, AND THE PROBLEM BEING THAT THE "FOCUSED" LIGHT UNDER THESE CONDITIONS IS REPEATEDLY FOCUSED ON THE EYES OF THE DRIVER HEADING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE MOST HAZARDOUS ARE ITEMS THREE AND FOUR, BUT ITEM FOUR IS PARTICULARLY HAZARDOUS BECAUSE IT COMBINES THE WORST OF ALL OF THE OTHERS - BOTH DISTRACTION AND BLINDINGNESS. CLEARLY, HEADLIGHTS NEED TO BE DESIGNED TO LIGHT THE WAY AHEAD; BUT THERE ARE COMPETING GOALS, WHICH INCLUDE NOT BLINDING OTHER DRIVERS. LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS WORLD, WHAT IS GOOD FOR ONE PERSON MUST BE WEIGHED AGAINST ITS NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON OTHERS. THE TRANSMISSION OF MY NEW CAR, 2006 MBZ C280, HAS FAILED THREE TIMES. THE CAR GOES INTO A FALSE NEUTRAL WHILE DRIVING AND THEN EVENTUALLY FALLS INTO GEAR.
