How to read a RAM 1500 VIN — every digit explained

Every RAM 1500 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 1500.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your 1500 VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Air Bags17V302000

What's wrong. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2013-2016 Ram 1500, Ram 2500, and 2014-2016 Ram 3500 vehicles. Certain driving conditions, such as driving off-road or debris striking the vehicle may cause the roll rate sensor to trigger a fault within the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC). If this fault occurs, the rollover side curtain air bag and the seat belt pretensioner will be disabled from deploying.

Risk. If the rollover side curtain air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a crash that necessitates activation of these safety systems.

What's wrong. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs, 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, 2009-2017 Ram 1500 and 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

Risk. Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

Fix. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, inspect the BTSI, and, as necessary, replace it, free of charge. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T79.

Truck was going at 40 MPH and power steering went out, brakes went out and truck started to accelerate resulting in a serious crash. Vehicle was totaled out but not inspected by Dodge. There was no warning of any problems with truck.

2017 1500

We driving down the highway in state of Idaho. When all of a sudden steering wheel when out of control. My mom could not control it. The steering wheel was go super fast side to side . When ended up going on the side of the highway.

2019 1500

Truck shut down running 55 mph locking the steering wheel sending it off the roadway rolling vehicle 7 times down the ditch line coming to a stop against the trees

2017 1500

Our vehicle was a 2017 Ram 1500 crew Cab 4x4. We’re getting near to Goldfield Nevada. I saw this town to my left when I remarked about the town to my wife, we were going the speed limit of 70 mph about 2PM in the afternoon than all of a sudden steering went erratic, twisting and turning us all over the highway to strong for me to hold with no warning lights, Genie yelled out what is going on, I slammed on the brakes and the steering forced us off the road and rolled our vehicle close to two time over. My wife and I escaped with bruises and small cuts. Backs still hurt. I just had spent over $8500.00 on services including a new computer timing ring replacement new intake manifold and new ventilated brakes , tires had over 92% tread on them upgraded wheels I could not control the steering at all. All I could do was slam the brakes down trying to stop all of it and come to a halt. Steering twisted us all over the highway. I left a quite a stretch a rubber on the highway as we left the roadway and hit the loose gravel dirt and flipped over into a rocky ditch. This totaled our vehicle my wife and I had to be extricated through the front windshield and by a miracle did not need to go to the hospital. I’ve been in touch with [XXX] at Progressive. The vehicle was towed to Tonopah NV we have pictures that we sent to [XXX] at Progressive. I told [XXX] the brain box needs to be preserved along with the brake system for further investigation. I have learned now through my research as there is a problem with this type of electronic steering system. This vehicle types has to cause major accidents and an ongoing lawsuit. I’ll be contacting attorneys to let him know what happened and I know you need to know what happened also because the ongoing problems with these models 2013 through 2018 with the EPS. Sincerely [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2016 1500

The Traction control flashed immediately before the wreck so my assumption is there was a traction lock malfunction. The road was wet due to rain. My husband was driving 55 mph when the truck's steering locked and we ended up in the right side ditch where we hit an electric power pole. My husband had several fractured ribs. My right lower arm was broken, required surgery and a week long stay in the hospital. They put a rod with screws into my arm. The truck was totally destroyed according to our insurance company.

2015 1500

My Steering went suddenly stiff making it extermely hard to turn, this resulted to my truck clipping/crashing into the front side of a parked commercial vehicle. My car rolled over and me and my passenger was injured. The truck was inspected and the technicians final conclusion was that the accident took place because the electronic power steering lost communication.

2014 1500

My son was driving on the freeway and went to change lanes and all of a sudden the power steering system stopped working and he told me after the fact that it locked up and he could not turn the steering wheel so he hit a guard rail and flipped the truck on its side. It caught on fire instantly and he was lucky to be able to get out. A passerby stopped while the truck was on fire and held the passenger door opened for him as he climbed out. If there were any children in the vehicle, they might have not been so lucky! Could have killed my son and anybody else on the road that early morning. Should be a police report. No system failures at the time.

2014 1500

Head on collision, that caused entire front frame to be replaced and air bags did not deploy.

2013 1500

Driving assistance features were rendered unavailable during a software update which i believe contributed to a collision. The vehicle was in motion on a highway when control was lost resulting in a crash.

2014 1500

Tipm...truck was mobile at night in rain when it died and coasted to the shoulder of the road...dense obnoxious smoke poured from under the hood and into cab where my grandchild were adversely affected by it causing serious breathing problems and coughing. Vehicle was towed to dealership where a demand of 1500 bucks up front to even look at this truck.. Eventually i had wrecker bring it from dealership home where is sits on ramps in the back yard. Nothing has been done by chrysler to address these problems. According to codes from obd-ii suggest the potential of airbags exploding without warning at any time...

2021 1500

Once again for the about 100th time our 2021 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel cuts off and when I means cuts off everything is off. No warning of any sort. Was going about 50mph and just completely shutdown on 880 Southbound in SF Bay Area. Truck has 52k miles is maintained and no codes no nothing. I had my children in the vehicle at the time of incident. We slowly pulled the shoulder with the help of rig driver slowing down to make sure no one hit us. It’s ridiculous that the current recalls aren’t as important and hazardous as trucks shutting off yet here we are cause it’s never duplicated while at the dealer. Is the FCA going to wait till someone or folks lives are taken cause of this very HAZARDOUS/SAFETY ISSUE?!

2016 1500

Truck proceeding at about 30-35 miles per hr. On a main city street when a car traveled directly in front of it due to its failure to stop at a stop sign on a side street. Front of truck crashed into car. Extensive damage to front of truck resulted. Questioning why no deployment of air bag in this head- on crash. Truck's driver hit steering wheel with forehead and was knocked unconscious for a brief period of time. Neck and hip injuries were likewise sustained. Driver of truck was ambulanced to nearby hospital for tests and observation. Driver of truck was wearing seatbelt at time of collision. Police report not yet available. Accident occurred 4/3/17 in the evening.

2014 1500

Horrible odor in the cab, which caused my wife, my two teenage daughters, and myself to all have at least one form of the following, vomiting, nausea, headache, burning eyes and throat. Apparently this is a known issue to the manufacturer, as there is something called a star case. I can't drive the vehicle at this time, as i have no idea if this odor can cause a permanent health problem, not to mention it is bizarre that a brand new vehicle would have a problem like this. *tr

On 06-06-2021 my wife, daughter and Me and our three dogs, was heading to are first destination on are 2 week vacation pulling are camper. In about 150 miles into the trip started smelling diesel, pulled over on a narrow 2 lane road couldn’t see anything. So my wife found a road we could pull off on to check everything out a mile away, right before we made it to the road a (service electronic throttle) message came on, so made it to the road to pull off stoped and instantly smoke started bellowing out from the back of the hood. Knowing that the fire department is 20 minutes out I needed to save the camper. Fire is past the fire wall now, pull the panel for the emergency release to put the transmission in neutral one of the airbags blew up in my face and couldn’t get it out of park. So somehow I shook the truck and camper enough to get the pin out of the hitch and somehow someone drove by and asked them could they help me pull the camper away, and we hooked a chain and pulled it away. 24 minutes later the fire department arrived and everything I saved from the truck was in the grass and burned up to hot to get close to get.

2014 1500

Truck took brief periods where it would just suddenly die going down the road, then the last time running about 60 mph, it died not far from home and smoke billowed out from under the hood wafting its way inside the cab...son-in-law fought the steering and managed to bring it to a stop on the shoulder of the road...with my granddaughters in the back seat....they were almost overcome by this black obnoxious smoke and both suffered for the longest time a harsh, dry cough...i noticed there are limited recalls on this model of truck and none seem to be related to electrical fires under the hood...how ever these vehicles are unsafe and pose a significant hazard to all the motoring public...they should be recalled and all of them destroyed to protect the public and the passengers...dealership sated the 'brain box and starter burned up' and is not a warranty issue...but the health and well being of my grandchildren are far more important than chrysler's profit margin.

In Fremont County Court hearing Jan. 30, 2021, the driver [XXX] referred to the judge, that he was unable to deactivate his 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 cruise control, thereby causing the DEATH. In open court [XXX] referred to cruise control RECALL NHTSA Campaign #18V332000 and FAILED Dodge Ram Campaign #U53 that discounted proper repairs ORDERED in the original NHTSA SAFETY RECALL #18V332000. IT APPEARS, that the disregard for proper repairs to be carried out on the cruise control system amount to MURDER of my sister [XXX] at the hands of Chrysler, Ram Trucks, and FCA US LLC. INVESTIGATION NEEDS TO BE OPENED on HOW or WHY GEICO Insurance ([XXX]'s Auto Ins. policy #[XXX]) declared his 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4X4 with approximately value of (at time of crash - June 12, 2021) $33,000, a total loss. THE EXACT DAY, a Saturday after the 4PM crash. Per Car Fax and notes from the court regarding release of the 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck. July 2nd i pulled into my driveway, opened my garage door, placed vehicle in park and exited vehicle to go in the house. My fiance stayed in vehicle, i turned and yelled to her to come in house as i was going to let dogs out before we left again.i proceeded in house and she exited vehicle to come in.she walked through the garage and i heard her screaming frantically, i ran out to the garage and the truck followed her into the garage and she was between my workbench and the truck.i pulled her out of the way and the truck continued pushing my basement wall in about 7 inches. I ran around the truck and applied the brakes,it was in park.we contacted fiat chrysler, they sent me a paper to sign allowing them to get information from the orc in the vehicle, which i allowed.on friday july 20th we met with an inspector and he hooked up computers to the truck to get the information stating he sends report to fca and they would notify us.we got a letter yesterday july 27th basically stating per our owners manual we should always use emergency brake and declined any responsibility. Never stated or shared what the ocr results showed.this could have killed someone and the rotary shifter is a problem.a few days after the incident while driving on a beautiful sunny day the wipers start up full boar like it was pouring out.they were in the off position. Fuel tank has a cap less tank system that sprays gasoline all over the person pumping it. Most fuel pumps will not let fuel into the tanks causing the person who is fueling the vehicle to be splashed with fuel. There are no warning messages or indications of any kind. You start fueling and bam! You’re covered in gasoline

Driving on hwy 17 down a ramp, throttle sensor light came on and truck stalled out. Restarted truck to pull off hwy/ramp to safer location, noticed thick bl smoke billowing out from under hood. Pulled into parking lot, lifted hood to see flames coming off engine. Bystander called 911 while i got a bucket of water. Threw bucket of water onto engine while police and fire dept finished extinguishing. Fire dept stated they have seen a few eco fires. Towed to hendrick's, contacted ram. Ram stated no need to contact ins co (they will handle it). Thought this was strange, contacted ins co anyways. Inspected by 2 fire specialists, ins co and ram. Ins co stated manufact defect, ram stated leaky injector (which were replaced by ram 18k mi prior at dealership). I sustained smoke inhalation and 1st degree burns to face, neck,lt arm and had/have headaches. Truck was still under 100k warranty with only 40k. Ram denied opened claim and warranty. Ins co totaled truck out, they still have an open claim against ram. Additionally ram denying my emissions settlement of 3k only offering 900 (stating emissions work couldn't be done due to fire classifying me as a previous owner although i was current owner even at that time). I still haven't settled emissions. Recently ram has recalled all 108k eco-diesels 2014-19 for fire hazard. My truck fits the description for what happens and always needed a little coolant with maint, insp, oil changes. I paid off my truck before, and now have a payment with what i consider a lesser truck. When i call fca and give my info they often hang up, act like they cant hear me, or state they are transferring me to manager (hanging up on me). Also stating someone will get back to me, but never any returned call (supposed to get a call tomorrow, will see).

2021 1500

Recall Statement – Fuel Overflow and Injury Incident Involving 2021 Dodge Ram 1500 I am reporting a recurring and hazardous issue with the fuel system on my 2021 Dodge Ram 1500. March 30, 2025: While refueling at a local gas station, the tank overflowed by approximately 3 gallons once it reached full capacity. I initially believed the problem was due to a faulty pump and notified a station attendant to clean the spill. May 2, 2025: At a different gas station, while refueling the same vehicle, a small amount of fuel again overflowed unexpectedly. This raised concerns, as it occurred under different fueling conditions. May 25, 2025: While refueling at the same station used on May 2nd, approximately 5 gallons of gasoline overflowed from the tank. As I attempted to remove the nozzle, I slipped on the spilled fuel and fell onto the concrete, injuring my right leg. At this point, it became clear that the issue was not isolated to specific gas station pumps, but rather a defect in the vehicle’s fuel system. This ongoing issue poses a significant safety risk. Beyond the environmental hazard, I could have sustained a serious head injury or worse during the fall. I am convinced there is a malfunction in the fuel system of my vehicle, and I strongly believe this warrants immediate investigation and a potential recall. This matter is unacceptable and must be addressed to prevent further harm to myself or others.

I was traveling on an interstate highway when i came upon an accident involving multiple vehicles. I took evasive action and was able to stop completely avoiding the vehicles involved, and just behind one vehicle that was partially blocking the right lane. I was struck from behind which caused the drivers seat to go into a reclining position. My truck was propelled forward with me in a reclining position. I felt a secondary impact, which damaged the front of my vehicle. Because i was in a reclining position, i was unable to control or direct my vehicle. None of the airbags in my vehicle deployed. I somehow pulled myself erect and eventually came to a stop on the inside grassy median of the highway.

Returning from a trip to mi back to my residence in tn. As i made a turn into my subdivision i started to accelerate to my next turn when i experienced a sudden acceleration of my vehicle. I had been using the vehicles cruise control as much as possible during the 10 hour drive home so it felt familiar, like the cruise control was trying to accelerate my vehicle. As the vehicle was accelerating and i was steering the through the curves in the road i had removed my foot from the gas pedal and tried hitting the cruise control off button several times. This had no effect in stopping or slowing the acceleration. The total distance from my turn into the subdivision to the end of the road or next intersection was roughly 250-300 yards all downhill so we picked up speed quickly. By the time i realized i could not effect or slow down the acceleration by shutting off the cruise control my next thought was to hit the brakes but we had run out of road. At this point i chose a direction where i saw no houses or large trees. We hit an area where it sloped up about 30 degrees then flattened out then sloped up again coming closer to other houses. I'm guessing we were traveling about 50-55 mph when i went off the road. We finally came to a stop after hitting both slopes and the closest houses back yard deck and then into a tree. I had my family in the vehicle with me; my wife, two sons and daughter. One of my sons was taken to the hospital via ambulance for back pain and a cut above his eye which required 8-9 stitches. The rest of my family were checked out with no injuries to speak of at that time. Only at the hospital i learned of the recall for the cruise control and an explanation of the cause and effect it had. The recall explanation fit verbatim to what happened to us. We had not received any notification for the recall on this vehicle or the other dodge vehicle we own. *dt *tr

RE: Colorado State Patrol Case #[XXX] Fremont County Case #[XXX] Agency ORI #[XXX] VIN #[XXX] NHTSA SAFETY RECALL #18V332000 (May 23, 2018) Also referred to as #U61 Dodge Ram Campaign #U53 (October 1, 2018) Dear NHTSA Officer: On June 12, 2021, at approximately 4PM, my sister [XXX]was KILLED while riding her motorcycle along with her pleasure motorcycle group. While preparing to make a legal left turn from CO State Highway 69 on to Route 1A (38.30908° N 105.62018° W) my sister [XXX] was struck from behind, by a 2016 Dodge Ram Truck traveling 61-64 MPH with activated Cruise Control. Can a RAM 1500 tow? Towing & payload

As a pickup, the RAM 1500 is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your 1500's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.

The assembly plant is encoded in the VIN — the 11th character. Decode your 1500's VIN above to see exactly where it was built; RAM may build it at more than one plant depending on the year.

How much ground clearance does the 1500 have?

Ground clearance varies by trim and drivetrain — AWD/4WD versions often sit higher. Decode your VIN or check the specific trim for the exact figure.
