The clutch throw out bearing and clutch needs to be replaced at 54,000 miles because of failure. This is a $2000 repair! This is a KNOWN issue, why isn’t this a recall?

On June 11, 2021, my wife and I were driving our 2014 Subaru Crosstrek (120,000 miles) from Milwaukee to Manitowish Waters, WI. About 20 miles north of Milwaukee on I-41 Northbound, my wife was driving at 70 mph when suddenly we both noticed a strong lurching from the CVT transmission. This was followed a few seconds later by a complete lockup of all four wheels on our car. Fortunately this did not happen in the left lane or we would've been in a terrible accident. My wife managed to steer the skidding car onto the highway shoulder until it came to a rest. The engine was still running. The transmission was completely dead. We called a towing company to tow the car to Sommers Subaru in Mequon WI. They diagnosed the problem as sudden catastrophic transmission failure and told us that the 2014 Crosstrek had tons of problems with the CVT. We told the service department that we could have been seriously injured or killed had my wife not been driving in the right lane of the interstate. We paid $7,800 for a remanufactured CVT as the power train was out of warranty. I have seen one other report of catastrophic CVT failure on your website involving a 2014 Crosstrek (Danbury CT). I'm sure there are others out in the world who have also suffered this, and God knows how many may have resulted in accidents with injuries or death. Perhaps they did not know to contact NHTSA with their experiences. I pray that you will initiate an investigation into this issue and force Subaru USA to issue a recall on their 2014 Crosstreks to replace the transmissions that are the source of these frightening incidents. Thank you.

I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY KEY NOT BEING RELEASED FROM THE IGNITION ONCE THE VEHICLE IS PUT INTO PARK AND TURNED OFF. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE CAUSED BY THE SHIFTER PLATE GUIDE NOT BEING INSTALLED CORRECTLY AT THE FACTORY ON MY VEHICLE MODEL AND CAN COST ANYWHERE FROM $350-$450 TO REPAIR AT A DEALER. AS THIS IS A KNOWN FACTORY ISSUE I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER A RECALL BY SUBARU. IT IS NOT ANYTHING THAT I AS AN OWNER COULD PREVENT THROUGH REGULAR MAINTENANCE. THIS COULD LEAD TO SAFETY ISSUES AS THE SHIFTER PLATE CONTINUES TO WEAR DUE TO INCORRECT INSTALLATION. THE ISSUE BEGAN IN JUNE 2020.

Key was stuck in the ignition and left me stranded unable to leave my car. I took the car to the Subaru dealership for them to assess and repair the issue. During this time the service desk confirmed it was a known issue with the CVT park range switch. They advised me that Subaru of America had done a warranty extension but that I was now outside of the time window for it to be covered. Upon further research this was an issue that was all over the Subaru forum boards with similar issues. I contacted Subaru of America in order to be reimbursed and was offer a $100 as a goodwill gesture and they kept referring to the warranty being extended to cover the issue. Subaru of America failed to issue a recall and instead did the "secret warranty extension" to avoid having to inform their customers and impact their reliability numbers. This is extremely concerning that a brand that is known for reliability would knowingly behave in this way and has me questioning what other items have they done this "secret warranty extension" on instead of following the recall process.

I started having issues with my car when I could not turn it off -- the key was stuck in the ignition and I was unable to turn the car fully off. This continued to happen and the only fix I found to get the car off was to turn the car back on, shift the gear into drive, then try to turn it off again. Sometimes it would take repeated tries of turning the car on and trying to turn it off. The problems then got worse when I started to have issues starting the car as well; the car would struggle to start and I lost confidence in the vehicle. Every workday I have to drive my car to a location where I have to turn off my vehicle while a security check is performed -- one day I got stuck at this checkpoint when I could not start my car. I was afraid to drive my car, thinking I could get stuck somewhere with it running or with it unable to start. A certified Subaru repair shop confirmed the issue is a known problem with Subaru parts described in a Technical Service Bulletin [XXX] ). There were no warning lights before these problems began and the Subaru dealer told me when they initially ran a diagnostic on the car it came back as having no issues. Since having the part in the gear shifter replaced at personal expense all problems have been resolved. Since Subaru knew of the faulty part in their vehicles, I think they should have issued a recall or at minimum warned their drivers. The problem occurs during a yaw under all the following conditions: * Slippery surface (snow/ice/heavy rain) * highway speeds (>45mph) * CEL lit for P000A and/or P000C (camshaft position sensor slow response) When the car yaws in these conditions, Vehicle Dynamic Control applies the brakes on the inside of the yaw (rightward yaw = brakes on right side, leftward yaw = brakes on left side), worsening the yaw and causing the vehicle to pendulum back and forth. This occurred several times while both my wife and I were driving, and caused lane departures on interstate highways twice while I was driving. The unintended yaws at high speed were slight and very controllable. I had applied a gentle countersteer without changing pedal inputs when the VDC began inside braking. When the yaw swapped sides, VDC braked on the other side. I wound up fighting VDC via steering to keep the nose straight, twice starting at about 55mph and winding up in a different lane at 30. Subaru states that the trouble codes disable traction and stability control, and the traction control disabled light was lit. However, I confirmed that even with the codes and the TC lamp lit, if I induce a large yaw in a snowy parking lot at low speeds (< 30mph) VDC does engage and straightens the car correctly whether I countersteer or not. I have years of FWD rallycross (dirt) experience and I still race on pavement, so I'm pretty familiar VDC trying to straighten a yawing car when I forget to turn it off. As this is my wife's car and not mine, I didn't know how to disable TC and she didn't either. My wife described the problem as heavy swaying back and forth in slippery conditions, but not bad enough to put her out of her lane. She has almost no experience with controlling a sliding vehicle. The problem was likely worse for me because I was already countersteering when VDC engaged. Subaru has inspected the car and found no problems other than the codes. Subaru case 220121-38086.

My battery was dead and I was locked inside my car. I tried unlocking my car using the mechanical knob but it was not working. I was locked inside my car in a 28 degree weather at 6am until my roadside assistance came. This could happen in a summer day in Texas and can do the worst possible thing to myself.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
10 complaints
Ignition key keeps intermittently locking into ignition when trying to retrieve key. Putting vehicle in park, key will turn engine off, but then will not turn all the way to release the key. Key has a key fob, vehicle is placed on parking gear. Sometimes restarting vehicle can help, sometimes shifting gears and driving vehicle again can help. Sometimes turning steering wheel helps. Sometimes all you can do is wait a few to five minutes to be able to turn off vehicle and retrieve car. No warning lights. After my warranty expired was when I noticed the problem. Bought vehicle used less than a year ago. It can be a safety risk if I cannot retrieve my key and then anyone could jump in and steal it as their is no other way to lock the vehicle unless I automatically locky myself out.

Battery drains excessively and frequently. Will not hold a charge. Frequently replacing battery only to have it fail. The personal safety issue here is being stranded with a dead battery in an unsafe environment with no way to escape, or needing the vehicle for an immediate personal health emergency and having the vehicle not start. I don't know if there is a safety related issue with operating the car with this electrical system issue. There are scores of web searches that depict this issue of parasitic draining of the battery by the vehicle's controller area network. Several class action lawsuits are referenced. I don't find any information that the lawsuits have resolved in a recall of any sort. Thank you for your interest in it this issue.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, I TURNED ON THE BLOWER FAN AND AC. THE AC WAS NOT COOLING DOWN THE CABIN (OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS 71-74 DEGREES). AFTER 40 MINUTES THE BLOWER FAN SHUT DOWN AND STOPPED WORKING. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THIS IS WHAT THEY FOUND: INSTRUMENT WIRE HARNESS, COMPONENT(S) AND SWITCH HAD MELTED, CAUSING A HAZARDOUS SITUATION. IT REMAINS A HAZARD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. SUBARU DENIES ANY RESPONSIBILITY IN THE DEFECTIVE/FAILED/UNSAFE COMPONENTS AND WILL NOT COVER EXPENSE. REASON: VEHICLE GROSSLY OVER WARRANTY PERIOD (BY 10,000 MILES).

THE HORN HAS STOPPED WORKING ON THE VEHICLE. DOES NOT MATTER WHAT POSITION THE STEERING WHEEL IS IN OR IF I AM DRIVING OR STATIONARY. I AM AT 72,000 MILES. I HAD THE ISSUE CHECKED BY A MECHANIC - FUSES WERE CHANGED AND CHECKED, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I DID AN INTERNET SEARCH WHICH REVEALED OTHER DRIVERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I SAW A RECALL IN AUSTRALIA WHICH: VIBRATION OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD COULD RESULT IN A METAL PLATE WITHIN THE STEERING COLUMN WEARING AWAY THE WIRING INSULATION. THE SHORT CIRCUIT COULD DISABLE CONTROL OF THE WIPERS, HEADLIGHTS, HORN, DRIVER'S AIRBAG AND FEATURES ACTUATED THROUGH THE MULTI-FUNCTION STEERING WHEEL, SUCH AS CRUISE CONTROL, AUDIO SYSTEM AND MOBILE PHONE CONNECTIVITY. THE ISSUE COULD ALSO SHORT OUT THE FUSE FOR THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM'S ECU SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE.

BATTERY DOES NOT HOLD A CHARGE. MY BATTERY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR A SECOND TIME SINCE 2014. THE FIRST TIME IT WAS ONLY 2 OR SO YEARS OLD (DEALER REPLACED IT UNDER WARRANTY). I'VE HAD THIS SECOND BATTERY FOR ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME (2 OR SO YEARS). EACH BATTERY JUST SLOWLY LOSES THE ABILITY TO HOLD A CHARGE UNTIL IT DIES. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU DRIVE IT... YOU CAN HEAR THE BATTERY GET WEAKER OVER A PERIOD EACH TIME YOU START IT.

STEERING

Started the car and a warning light came on and the steering froze. I turned it off for the day. The next day I started it and it didn’t freeze again. I’m concerned that while driving the steering will lock up and cause an accident and possible injury or kill me. My uncle reached out to Subaru of America. They didn’t offer any help. They just said take it in at your own expense. We were quoted over the phone approximately $2000 to repair. My uncle researched this issue. This locking steering problem has been a big problem with the Subaru Crosstrek subjecting it to recalls. I believe Subaru should repair this safety issue.

The vehicle had 51666 miles on it when I last serviced it for an oil change in Oct. of 2021. The owner puts very few miles on the vehicle. The vehicle would be available for inspection by your agency. At this time, no specific component has been identified in the intermittent failure. 2016 and newer Subaru's have recalls on similar symptoms. Owner complaint is that the power steering intermittently stops working and the steering wheel is very hard to turn if it can be turned at all due to the fact the owner is 80+ years old. Subaru vehicles from 2016 and up have had this issue and recalls have been issued on them, but not on this model year. Owner stated today that the problem has only occurred so far on initial start-up, and one time, once the key was cycled start, then off and back to start again then the power steering worked. She said the p/s warning light came on, and then went off, but I cannot verify that at this point. Warning lamps on IP's do come on during the key on to start on the ignition switch start process, so this may be part of normal IP function. I am an auto repair shop owner and have grave concerns that this failure may happen while the customer is driving down the road, and if approaching a turn and the power steering locks up, they could die due to the inability to safely maneuver out of traffic and get off the road or miss a bend in the highway. The customer brought the car in once, and I could not re-create the problem cold or warm. I am currently waiting for the dealer in Green Bay to call me back with more information as the nearest dealer from the customer's residence is a 170 mile round trip. At this point, it has not been back to the dealer for inspection for the p/s system, and I am awaiting call back today from Bergstrom Subaru in Green Bay. Bergstrom did confirm the recall for a brake light switch was completed previously by them, and there were no other campaigns or recalls listed in their computer records.

I HAVE A 2014 SUBARU CROSSTREK (14K MILES) AND MY STEERING WHEEL WILL FEEL LIKE IT LOST CONTACT (DEAD SPOT) WITH THE STEERING RACK FOR A SECOND OR TWO. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND I CAN'T REPRODUCE FOR THE DEALER SERVICE TECHS. AT TIMES GET FUNKY VIBRATIONS LIKE A STRUT BOUNCE FROM THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL OR EXCESSIVE SIDE TO SIDE YAW MOTION AND THEN STEERING WHEEL ROCKS (LEFT TO RIGHT), THE ELECTRIC STEERING FEELS LIKE IT WANTS TO ADJUST AND THEN GOES NUMB (NO ROAD FEELING) AND RECOVERS, NEVER ANY ERROR DASH LIGHT OR CODE. THE CAR HAS BEEN TO THE SUBARU DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR TWICE WITH NO TROUBLE FOUND. A SECOND DEALER TOOK THE CAR FOR A TEST DRIVE AND DID NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM, I WAS TOLD THAT WITHOUT A TROUBLE LIGHT OR CODE THEY MAY NEVER FIND THE PROBLEM. A THIRD SUBARU DEALER GOT ALL ANTSY WHEN I TOLD THEM THE PROBLEM (LIKE IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE) AND MADE ME OUT OF THE SERVICE AREA BY YELLING, THEY DID NOT HAVE TIME OR TECHS TO TROUBLE SHOOT THIS PROBLEM. I CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA AND GOT A COMPLAINT TICKET ON FILE (1-8235180260). I FIND IT ODD THAT A MODERN CAR WITH ELECTRONIC (ELECTRIC) STEERING SYSTEM HAS NO STRESS TEST DIAGNOSTICS OR A FAIL SAFE TO PREVENT THE DRIVER FROM LOOSING CONTROL. BESIDES THIS INTERMITTENT STEERING ISSUE AND THE BAD SUBARU DEALER SERVICE NETWORK, THE CROSSTREK IS ALSO SCARY TO DRIVE IN HIGH WINDS. *TR

Rolling into a stop sign, the brakes did not work and was stuck- extremely difficult to step on. It eventually loosened after about 7 seconds and I was able to stop, but had to run the stop sign and almost hit a car. This occurred when the temperature was about 25 degrees F outside. Upon reading on forums and in a Subaru bulletin (# 06-79-20), it seems like this is a common occurrence for many Subaru owners when the temperature drops.

I BACKED OUT OF THE GARAGE AND WAS IN REVERSE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL ON THE DRIVEWAY WAITING FOR THE GARAGE DOOR TO CLOSE. FOR SOME REASON I CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE AND STARTED GOING FORWARD. I HIT THE BRAKES AND THE CAR EVENTUALLY STOPPED, BUT NOT BEFORE HITTING THE THE GARAGE DOOR. I THEN PUT THE SELECTOR ROD IN REVERSE. THE CAR PROCEEDED TO ROLL DOWN THE DRIVEWAY DECLINE INTO THE STREET. I TRIED TO BRAKE, BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE CAR STOPPED ONLY BECAUSE I PUT THE SELECTOR INTO DRIVE. I WAS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED BY ITSELF AND THE GEAR SELECTOR IN DRIVE. I COULD NOT CHANGE THE GEAR UNTIL I REACHED DOWN AND PULLED THE BRAKE PEDAL UP FROM ITS DEPRESSED POSITION. *TR

THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG SHUTS OFF AFTER DRIVING IN THE VEHICLE FOR 45 MINS OR MORE. THE VEHICLE IS STILL IN MOTION WHEN THE AIR BAG SYMBOLS ON THE DASHBOARD SIGNALS IT IS NOW SHUT OFF. THE PASSENGER IS STILL SEATED IN THE SEAT. THE VEHICLE MAY BE ON CITY STREET OR HIGHWAY, IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.

FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT (SHOWN NEXT TO CLOCK) WILL PERIODICALLY SWITCH FROM ON TO OFF WHILE THE SEAT IS OCCUPIED. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION, FREQUENTLY ON LONGER TRIPS. RESTARTING THE CAR DOES NOT FIX THE ISSUE, NOR DOES READJUSTING THE SEAT. OTHERS HAVE SUGGESTED THAT THIS MAY BE DUE TO MOISTURE SATURATING THE SENSOR, SUCH AS FROM A GYM SESSION OR HOT SUMMER ROADTRIP. THE SENSOR WILL GO BACK TO NORMAL AFTER A DAY OR MORE.
Aug 10, 2020
THE PASSENGER SIDE 'OCCUPANT DETECTION SENSOR MODULE' IS FAULTY. THIS MODULE HAS BEEN RECALLED ON SIMILAR SUBARU VEHICLES RECENTLY. THE MODULE DETECTS AN OCCUPANT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, AND EITHER ACTIVATES OR DEACTIVATES THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM. AT APPROXIMATELY 135K MILES, THE SENSOR BEGAN TO ROUTINELY TURN THE AIRBAG OFF WHEN THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS OCCUPIED. THIS OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS AT INTERSTATE SPEED TO IDLE SPEED. SUBARU (AT THE DEALERSHIP IN GRAND JUNCTION, CO) HAS PERFORMED A DIAGNOSIS AND PROVIDED ME THIS INFORMATION.

OVERLY SENSITIVE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR. AFTER WORKING OUT SIDE IN THE SUMMER, THE SWEAT FROM A PASSENGERS BODY WILL TURN OFF THE AIRBAG, EVEN IF IT WASN'T MUCH SWEAT. DEALER TOLD ME IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THERE WAS NO FIX. MOST SUMMER DAYS IN TEXAS I HAVE NO PASSENGER AIRBAGS DUE TO THE SWEAT FROM WALKING TO MY CAR. ALSO AIRBAG WILL TURN ON WITH AS LITTLE AS 2-5 LBS OF PRESSURE. THESE ERRORS HAPPEN IN ALL PHASES OF DRIVING.

WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH ON A 34 DEGREE DAY ON A CLEAR ROAD, WE HEARD A LOUD NOISE FROM THE ROOF. WE PULLED OVER AND SAW THAT THE SUN ROOF HAD SPONTANEOUSLY RUPTURED AND EXPLODED OUTWARD. LUCKILY THE SLIDING DOOR TO THE SUN ROOF WAS CLOSED. WHEN EXAMINING THE SUN ROOF, THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING HITTING THE CAR. IN FACT THE ROOF RACK BAR WAS RIGHT OVER THE NEW "HOLE" IN THE GLASS SUNROOF AND WOULD HAVE PROTETED THE GLASS FROM A FALLING OBJECT. THE SUNROOF WAS PUCKERED "OUT" AND GLASS WAS SCATTERED ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE CAR NOT WITHIN THE SUNROOF COMPARTMENT. IT APPEAR TO HAVE SPONTANEOUSLY EXPLODED WITHOUT EXTERNAL DAMAGE.

ENGINE
3 complaints
I am reporting a complete engine failure on my 2014 Subaru Crosstrek at 140,000 miles due to a valve spring issue that appears to match Subaru’s Recall WTY-84 (NHTSA Campaign 18V772000). I checked my VIN and it currently shows no open recalls, but I’ve reviewed Subaru’s own documentation that lists 2013–2016 Crosstreks as affected by this defect. My vehicle clearly falls within that production range and has now suffered the exact failure described in that recall — a fractured valve spring causing a complete engine malfunction. I never received a recall notice, and when I contacted Subaru, they acknowledged the VIN wasn’t included in the recall despite the year, make, model, and symptoms matching exactly. This raises concern that the recall scope is too narrow and is excluding other affected vehicles. This failure created a safety issue due to sudden engine loss while driving and has led to significant repair costs that I believe should have been prevented. I am asking NHTSA to investigate whether additional VINs — including mine — should be added to the recall to prevent further safety risks for other Subaru owners in the same situation.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE TURNPIKE, ALL MY DASH LIGHTS WENT ON, & THE CAR STARTED BUCKING LIKE AN UNBROKEN HORSE AT 70 MILES AN HOUR WHILE I WAS SURROUNDED BY TRACTOR TRAILERS. I MANAGED TO GET HOME BY SWITCHING THE CAR TO MANUAL SHIFTING. TAKING THE CAR TO THE SUBARU DEALER, I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT: 1. THAT RODENTS HAD EATEN PARTIALLY THROUGH MY SPEED SENSOR WIRE AND IT FINALLY COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED WHILE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. THE SPEED SENSOR WIRE IS WHAT TELLS THE TRANSMISSION TO SHIFT. 2. THAT THEY SEE THIS PROBLEM AT LEAST 1 TO 2 TIMES A DAY!! 3. THAT THE SENSOR WIRE IS COATED WITH PEANUT OIL!!! (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?) 4. THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER MY 6 YEAR, 600,000 MILE EXTENDED WARRANTY PURCHASED IN ADDITION TO THE VEHICLE. AND YES, THE WIRE WAS REPLACED WITH THE EXACT SAME WIRE WHICH THEY CANNOT GUARANTEE THIS WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. THE DEALER'S SOLUTION: MOTHBALLS AROUND MY CAR EVERY TIME I PARK ANYWHERE OR URINATE AROUND MY CAR. HUMANS ARE APPARENTLY THE BEST 'PREDATOR' TO DETER RODENTS. MY 16 YEAR OLD SON IS LEARNING TO DRIVE & I HAD BEEN TEACHING HIM TO DRIVE ON MY SUBARU BELIEVING IT TO BE THE SAFER OF MY FAMILY'S VEHICLES. HE WOULD HAVE PANICKED ON THE HIGHWAY IF THAT HAPPENED TO HIM AND SOMEONE WOULD BE HURT, IF NOT DEAD. AS IT WAS, WITH 20 YEARS PLUS EXPERIENCE DRIVING, IT WAS STILL A SHOCK AND HAD THE TRACTOR TRAILER I PASSED RIGHT BEFORE THE CAR WENT CRAZY NOT BEEN PAYING ATTENTION OR BEEN TIRED, THAT TRUCK WOULD HAVE HIT MY CAR AT 70 MILES AN HOUR. UNFORTUNATELY, MY 'DAMAGES' FROM THE ORDEAL ARE ONLY MY $100 INSURANCE DEDUCTIBLE AND SOME TIME OFF WORK, SO I DON'T MAKE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A SUIT AGAINST SUBARU. THE CONCERN IS IN WEIGHING COST VERSUS BENEFITS, THE CAR MANUFACTURERS WILL WAIT TO CHANGE ANYTHING UNTIL ENOUGH PEOPLE GET HURT OR DIE TO MAKE IT COST EFFECTIVE TO CHANGE THEIR PRACTICES. PLEASE DO SOMETHING!

I WAS IN A CIRCULAR DRIVEWAY OF A LARGE APARTMENT COMPLEX GETTING READY TO PARK AND WAIT FOR AN INDIVIDUAL. THERE WAS A CAR IN FRONT OF ME SO I WAS PREPARING TO PARK WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CAR WENT FULL THROTTLE. IT DID NOT RESPOND TO PRESSING ON THE BRAKE. I HAD THE CHOICE OF EITHER HITTING THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME OR TURNING INTO A 15 INCH VERTICAL ROCK WALL WHICH SERVED AS A RETAINING WALL FOR A RAISED BED AND WAS ABOUT 10 FEET TO MY RIGHT. I CHOSE THE LATTER. THE CAR WAS GOING SO FAST THAT THE FRONT TWO WHEELS CLIMBED THE VERTICAL WALL AND THE TWO FRONT TIRES ENDED IN THE RAISED BED. THE LEFT HEAD LIGHT HIT A CORNER POST AND THE CAR STOPPED. IT WAS THE SCARIEST 5 SECONDS OF MY LIFE. I HAVE A GOOD DRIVING RECORD BUT KNOW THAT I AM NOT BEYOND DRIVER'S ERROR. HOWEVER I AM CONVINCED IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE WHEN THE CAR WAS HARDLY MOVING, THE WEATHER PERFECT, THE ONLY EXPLANATION FOR THE ACCIDENT IS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION BY THE VEHICLE ITSELF. THIS WAS THE 7TH SUBARU OWNED BY MY HUSBAND OR ME. I AM A FAN OF THE BRAND AND KNOW THE CAR WELL. IF I HAD WANTED THE CAR TO CLIMB THAT VEHICLE WALL I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO IT. I AM JUST VERY FORTUNATE THAT I DID NOT HIT ANYONE ELSE OR HURT MYSELF. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP WHERE IT WAS REPAIRED. DAMAGES TOTALED ALMOST $8000 AND MAINLY CONSISTED OF REPAIRING THE HOOK, FENDER, DRIVER'S DOOR, HEADLIGHTS, GRILL, AND RADIATOR. FOLLOWING THE REPAIR MY INSURANCE COMPANY TOWED THE CAR TO MY SUBARU DEALERSHIP WHERE DIAGNOSTICS WERE DONE AND SEVERAL FIELD TESTS CONDUCTED. NO PROBLEM WAS DETECTED. BECAUSE I DID NOT TRUST THE VEHICLE I TRADED IT BACK WITH FULL DISCLOSURE AT A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS TO SUBARU DEALERSHIP AND BROUGHT A SLIGHTLY USED 2015 FORESTER. I ALSO FILED A REPORT WITH SUBARU OF AMERICA.

I have been getting my 2014 Subaru Crosstrek serviced at Continental Subaru in Anchorage, Alaska for the last 4.5 years. I initially thought that they were an honest dealer/mechanic. I originally bought my Subaru in California and drove it up to Anchorage and it has been here ever since. My car burns oil very quickly. I mentioned this several times and the dealer always said it wasn't that big of an issue. Between oil changes I frequently had to add a couple of quarts of oil in addition to what they added during the oil changes because the car was burning so much oil. Recently in the last year, Continental Subaru told me my spark plugs were bad. I brought the car in because my cylinders were misfiring. They replaced the spark plugs. However a month later the issue still persisted. I called Subaru and had them replace the spark plugs again. At this point they said it was just the spark plugs. The issue persisted. I took my Subaru to a local mechanic this time since I felt like Continental was not being honest in their inspection of my car. Turns out the problem is much worse than Subaru was letting on for so many years. My car burns a lot of oil. which is a manufacturing issue. They continually told me it wasn't an issue. Probably because my car was still under warranty. Now that my car is not under warranty they finally admit that there are a lot of underlying issues. Except now I have to pay out of pocket because the car is now out of warranty. Since the car burns oil at such a fast rate, the head gaskets have warped. The valve cover gaskets need to be replaced and are leaking oil into my spark plugs and my coils. So now that my car is out of warranty suddenly I have to pay out of pocket almost $9000 to get the valve cover gaskets, head gaskets, spark plugs, coils, engine harness, all replaced. The variable valve timing is leaking. And there is internal mixing of oil and coolant in the motor. They have been extremely dishonest with me for years. I want a recall.

I HAVE EXPERIENCED ROUGH IDLING WITH MY 2014 CROSSTREK LIMITED FOR ABOUT A YEAR. DURING THIS TIME MY CHECK OIL LIGHT HAS COME ON TWICE. I BROUGHT MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP IN FAYETTEVILLE, AR WHERE THEY BEGAN THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST PROCESS. THUS FAR THE DEALERSHIP HAS FLUSHED MY COOLANT AND OIL AND REPLACING O-RINGS AND VALVES, REPLACED MORE O-RINGS AND MY AC COMPRESSOR, AND COMPLETED FOUR OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS EACH TIME I DROVE 1,200 MILES AND CONSUMED 8OZ OIL (10.1OZ IS CONSIDERED FAILING). MY CAR CONTINUES TO ROUGH IDLE TO THE POINT THAT I CANNOT LET IT IDLE INSIDE THE GARAGE WITHOUT SHAKING THE WALLS INSIDE THE HOUSE. THE ROUGH IDLE HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, WHEN I FIRST START THE CAR, AFTER I HAVE DRIVEN FOR A WHILE, AND DURING ROUTINE TRIPS AROUND TOWN, ANYTIME THE CAR IS IDLING. THE DEALERSHIP HAS ADVISED ME THAT ROUGH IDLE AND OIL CONSUMPTION IS NORMAL WITH CROSSTREKS AND NOTHING SHOWS ON THE COMPUTER SCANNER. THEY REFUSE TO DO A MECHANICAL CHECK TO FURTHER DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE.

DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 135,961 MILES, JUST 5 MONTHS AFTER PULLING THE CAR OFF A USED LOT. ALL DASH LIGHTS ARE ILLUMINATED, VEHICLE ENCOUNTERS LOSS OF ACCELERATION AND I PULLED TO THE SHOULDER. I ATTEMPT TO RESTART VEHICLE, AND LIGHTS RETURN TO NORMAL, AND I ATTEMPT TO MAKE MY WAY HOME. LIGHTS ARE ILLUMINATED ONCE AGAIN, BUT I DO NOT HAVE LOSS OF ACCELERATION THIS TIME. TAKE IT TO BE SERVICED, LH FRONT AXLE FAILED, NEEDS REPLACED, ENGINE BLOCK HAS CONSIDERABLE OIL LEAK, VALVE BODY REPLACEMENT REQUIRED (COVERED UNDER WARRANTY THANK GOODNESS). 4 MONTHS LATER AFTER CAR SEEMS TO BE IN REPAIRED AND WORKING ORDER, THE SAME ISSUE AGAIN, THIS TIME THE RH FRONT AXLE IS REPLACED, ALTHOUGH NO ENGINE LEAK, THE SERVICE TECH IS NO LETTING ME KNOW THAT ON THEIR TEST DRIVE AFTER THEY REPLACED THE AXLE THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND WILL NOW NEED TO BE REPLACED. I CAN NOT AFFORD THE CVT REPLACEMENT AT $8000 FIX. THE CAR HAS NOW BEEN SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY AS I ATTEMPT TO FIND MONEY FOR THE REPAIRS.

DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 60MPH, WARM DAY (75) A/C WAS ON, STARTING TO ACCELERATE UP A SLIGHT INCLINE, THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN. THE GAS PEDAL/ACCELERATION WAS NOT WORKING. THE CAR WENT LIMP AND ACTED AS IF IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. WHILE TRYING TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY, THE ACCELERATION KICKED BACK IN AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. THIS HAPPENED TWICE. THE SECOND TIME I WAS DRIVING ON CITY STREETS AT 40MPH, SAME CONDITIONS OUTSIDE, AND GOING UP A SLIGHT HILL IN SAN FRANCISCO, THE POWER DIES/GOES LIMP, A FEW SECONDS LATER, POWER ON ACCELERATION COMES BACK. THERE WAS NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON.

AROUND SEPT. 2019 MY 2014 SUBARU CROSSTREK STARTED MAKING A CLICKING NOISE WHEN I MADE A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN FROM A STOP. MY SUBARU HAD 47,000 MILES ON IT. THE NOISE CONTINUED TO GET WORSE AND IT STARTED HAVING A VIBRATION IN IT. ITS NOW STARTING TO CATCH WHEN YOU MAKE A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN FROM A STOP. I HAD IT CHECKED OUT AND WAS TOLD MY CV AXLES ARE BAD AND THAT'S CAUSING THE PROBLEM.

THE ISSUE: RIGHT PASSENGER SIDE WIPER DOES NOT CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD PROPERLY AND ICES UP SO BADLY THAT IT AFFECTS THE DRIVER SIDE WIPER AND VISIBILITY TO THE POINT THAT I HAVE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND MANUALLY CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD AND WIPERS BY HAND AND WITH A SCRAPPER, HENCE A SAFETY ISSUE. STEPS TAKEN PER SUBARU SERVICE DEPARTMENT. 1.) REPLACE WIPERS, NOT RESOLVED. 2.) REPLACED WIPER ARMS, NOT RESOLVED. 3.) SUBARU SAID IT MAY BE THE WINDSHIELD IS OUT OF SHAPE, FLAT SPOT. I ASKED IF THAT'S WARRANTY SINCE IT CAME ON THE CAR WHEN I PURCHASED IT NEW, NO, I HAD TO PAY FOR IT; NOT RESOLVED. 4.) REPLACED WIPERS 3 MORE TIMES WITH DIFFERENT BRANDS; ISSUE NOT RESOLVED. 5.) CALLED SUBARU CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITH A COPY OF ALL WARRANTY AND SERVICE WORK TO DATE. AFTER A MONTH THEY REFERRED MY BACK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE WIPERS REPLACED. IT IS OBVIOUSLY NOT THE WIPERS. THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP THE WINDSHIELD FROM FREEZING TO THE POINT OF NOT BEING SAFE TO DRIVE IN MILD SNOW WEATHER IS TO RUN THE DEFROST AT 100% FAN SPEED AND MAXIMUM TEMPERATE CONTINUALLY AND TO TURN ON THE WIPER HEAT ELEMENT. I HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE ICE UP SO EASILY. THIS HAPPENS ON AT ANY SPEED. THE WIPER DOES NOT CLEAR OR MAKE CONTACT ENOUGH TO CLEAR WATER AND LEAVES A THIN LAYER THAT INSTANTLY FREEZES THUS PROMOTING THE FREEZING FEEDBACK LOOP. THE ISSUE HAS BEEN HARD FOR SUBARU TO REPLICATE BECAUSE IT HAS TO BE COLD AND SNOWING AND I HAVE TO HAVE IT IN THE DEALER AT THE TIME OF COLD AND SNOWY WEATHER. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MULTIPLE SUBARU EMPLOYEES THAT "IT MAY BE A DESIGN ISSUE WITH THE CAR AND THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO". I FIND THAT DIFFICULT TO ACCEPT SINCE THE CROSSTREK IS MARKETED TO OUTDOORS LIFESTYLES. I HAVE HAD 6 OTHER VEHICLES IN MY LIFETIME, NON HAVE HAD THIS FREEZING ISSUE. I WILL NOT TAKE PASSENGERS IN MY CAR WHEN IT SNOWS BECAUSE I FEEL IT'S UNSAFE. KINDLY CT OWNER

1 complaint
While driving on highway the engine died, I was able to pull over and stop safely. The engine turned over when I turned the key but would not start. The fuel gauge showed one full bar of fuel and the fuel mileage reading showed 60 miles till empty. I contacted roadside assistance and after 2 hours was able to put 4 gallons of fuel in the car. The car started normally and I was able to drive to gas station and fill up. The fuel gauge had never failed to accurately show the fuel in my car and the mileage range till empty was always accurate. I do not trust my cars fuel gauge anymore. I was lucky not to be in the city in rush hour and stuck in traffic. I will contact Subaru to report the problem.

I own a Subaru Crosstrek XV Limited which I purchased new in November 2014. I was in a line of vehicles on a street waiting to enter a business parking lot and drive-thru. There was an incline from the street into the parking lot. The vehicle in front of me reached the top of the incline and turned right into the parking lot. With my foot remaining on the brake, I raised my foot slightly to allow my vehicle to move up the incline, my car suddenly accelerated and crashed into the bumper of the vehicle in front of me. The local police were contacted and a report was made. It was like when the cruise control is engaged and the engine given more power to climb an incline or hill. I don't know what caused this to happen, but am taking it to a local mechanic since the closest Subaru dealer is 75 miles away.

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR WHEN ALL THE LIGHTS ON DASH COME ON. CONSTANT JERKING/BUCKING OF THE CAR WITHOUT INCREASING PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDDLE. METER RPMS INDICATOR NEEDLE IS ERRATIC MOVING BACK AND FORTH WHILE THE ENGINE REVS. THE MPG NEEDLE GOES FROM PLUS TO MINUS ERRATICALLY ALSO. AT THIS TIME THE CAR IS NOT DEPENDABLE. I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR TO GRANITE SUBARU 4 TIMES FOR THE SAME COMPLAINT. THEY SAY THEY HAVE USED THE DIAGNOSTIC METER TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM BUT IT STILL REMAINS, NOW EVEN WORSE. I HAVE DISCUSSED THE PROBLEM WITH A ENGINEER AND 2 AUTO MECHANICS WHO FEEL THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE COMPUTER. I MENTIONED THIS TO GRANITE SUBARU AND WAS TOLD THAT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM. MY PLAN AT THIS TIME IS TO BRING MY CAR TO AUTOZONE AND HAVE THEM EVALUATE MY CAR. I AM HOPING TO GET A LIST OF ERROR CODES TO BRING TO SUBARU WITH THE HOPE THAT THE 5TH TIME WILL BE MY LAST. I HAVE RECEIPTS FOR WHAT HAS TRANSPIRED SO FAR BUT DO NOT HAVE A WAY TO UPLOAD THEM AND SEND WITH THIS REPORT. PLEASE SEND ADDRESS AND I WILL MAKE COPIES AND SEND. THANK YOU.

THE REVERSE CAMERA INTERMITTENTLY DOES NOT WORK WHEN IT SHOULD. THE DEALER & SUBARU CUSTOMER SERVICE SUPPORT WERE NOT ABLE TO COME TO A RESOLUTION THE 2ND TIME AROUND FOR THIS PROBLEM.
