Faulty seal in OEM windshield sealant/silicone causing water to leak on the inside of car, headliner, and inner windshield. Can cause visibility issues and mildew.
Dec 14, 2024
The windshield has come loose at the top allowing water to get into the vehicle when it rains. Water pools on the floor of driver’s side, the headliner gets wet, and the interior smells moldy.
Nov 28, 2024
Water enters from the front of the windshield while driving.

Several ounces of water leaking onto drivers hands on steering wheel from top of windshield when braking in adverse weather conditions is a severe and dangerous distraction to driving and braking. Condition first noticed in first heavy rain storm soon after using drive-through car wash, and persisted and worsened steadily thereafter. This condition is particularly dangerous as it occurs only when driver attempts to slow the vehicle at an intersection, and water in the roof flows forward into, and fills, the cavity that contains the top edge of the windshield with a large quantity of water which then flows onto the driver's hands and lap with no warning. Dealer is aware of defective windshield seals common to this year and model but will not assume repair beyond warranty period.

The windshield leaks. The seal is no good. I get wet every time it rains. No repair messages or warning lights were issued by the car. The repair service inspected the car, and they stated the factory glue was non-existent on the seal. Very poor.

The front seal on my windshield glass is not connected, the adhesive us either gone or not working anymore. You can push the glass up and see it move visibly when pushed. The leak is impacting my safety while driving. Yesterday ice cold water was dripping onto my lap while I was driving (distracting), as well as obstructing my vision while it ran down the inside of the glass. An independent glass company has inspected the windshield and duplicated the issues I have mentioned above. They mentioned that they have seen many of these faulty windshield seals and thought there might be a recall, but I have not been able to see one from Volvo.

THERE IS A LEAK ON MY FRONT WINDSHIELHE, DRIVERS SIDE.. WHEN IT RAINS WATER SEEPS IN.. THE LEAK IMPACTS MY SAFETY WHILE DRIVING. EG: YESTERDAY ICE COLD WATER WAS DRIPPING ONTO MY LAP WHILE I WAS DRIVING (DISTRACTING), AS WELL AS OBSTRUCTING MY VISION WHILE IT RAN DOWN THE INSIDE OF THE GLASS ). IT SEEMS MANY VOLVO OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS ESPECIALLY XC60'S. APPARENTLY THE SEAL DID NOT ADHERE CORRECTLY THEREFORE, EVENTUALLY ALL XC'S WILL EXPERIENCE IF NOT RECALLED BY VOLVO. THE AIRBAGS ARE SUPPORTED BY THE FRONT WINDSHIELD AND IF NOT FIXED, MAY LEAD TO DEATH FOR MAY VOLVO OWNERS. PLEASE HELP US WITH VOLVO CORPORATE. THIS MATTER REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.

WHEN ENTERING THREE LOCAL INTERSECTIONS THE CITY SAFETY AUTO BRAKE ENGAGES EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NOTHING IN FRONT OF THE CAR. IT HAS ONLY HAPPENED AT THESE 3 LOCATIONS. THEY ARE LIGHT CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS WITH INGROUND SENSORS. SPEEDS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LESS THAN 10 MPH. THE MOST CONCERNING EXAMPLE WAS THE BRAKING STOPPED THE CAR AND THEN WHEN MY SPOUSE ATTEMPTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE INTERSECTION IT STOPPED HER AGAIN AND SHE WAS NEARLY REAR ENDED. ALL THREE APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN UPDATED OR ARE NEW. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR PROBABLY A YEAR AND IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AT THESE INTERSECTIONS 100% OF THE TIME, BUT THESE ARE THE ONLY INTERSECTIONS WE HAVE HAD THE ISSUE, IN THE 4 YEARS WE HAVE OWNED THE CAR. I HAD THE CAR LOOKED AT WHEN IT WAS IN FOR OUR LAST OIL CHANGE AND THE COMPUTER IS NOT INDICATING ANY ERROR CODE ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC. SO THE SYSTEM THINKS THERE WAS SOMETHING IN FRONT OF THE CAR. I HAVE NOT FOUND VERY MUCH ONLINE WHEN TRYING TO SEARCH THIS ISSUE. THE DATE I AM LISTING WAS THE MOST RECENT. WE DO HAVE A VIDEO FROM YESTERDAY.

MY WINDSHIELD IS LEAKING FROM TWO AREAS ON THE TOP ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THERE ARE NO OBVIOUS CRACKS OR SCRATCHES WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE SEAL IS DEFECTIVE. AS THIS IS PART OF THE VEHICLE'S STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AND WITHOUT A CRACK, THIS IS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT AND MANY OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS AS WELL.

Factory installed windshield is leaking profusely due to faulty adhesive/primer. This is a well known issue that causes havoc on vital electronic systems and should be a national recall. The loose windshield bond can cause the windshield to detach during a crash. The failed windshield bond compromises the structural integrity of the roof.

WATER LEAKAGE INSIDE OF FRONT DRIVER SIDE WINDSHIELD DURING LIGHT RAINFALL. CAR WAS STATIONARY. LEAKAGE IS CONTINUOUS EACH TIME IT RAINS. VOLVO XC60 2013 3.2 ENGINE
Feb 27, 2021
I OWN A 2013 XC 60. IT HAS ADHESIVE FAILURE ON THE WINDSHIELD. IT HAS BEEN THIS WAY FOR OVER TWO YEARS. EVERYWHERE I TAKE MY VEHICLE THEY TELL ME THAT IT IS PROBABLY THE SUNROOF LEAKING. (SAFELIGHT WHO VOLVO SAID I SHOULD USE) WE HAVE CHECKED ALL THE SUNROOF DRAINS AND IT IS NOT THE SUNROOF IT IS 100% MANUFACTURE DEFECT. I WAS TOLD BY ONE VOLVO DEALERSHIP THAT THEY WOULD CONSIDER PULLING IT OUT FOR ME BUT IF THE WINDSHIELD BROKE I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR A NEW WINDSHIELD. THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY HAVE HAD MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ON THIS YEAR MAKE AND MODEL FOR THE WINDSHIELD LEAKING. I DO BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED. MY CAR GROWS MOLD IN THE FLOORBOARD FROM IT LEAKING SO BADLY. SO I HAVE TO CONTINUE TO SHAMPOO OUT SO THAT MY FAMILY AND CHILDREN DO NOT GET SICK.

I RECENTLY NOTICED WATER INTRUDING INTO THE TOP SIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD. THE ISSUE PERSISTED OVER THE COURSE OF A COUPLE WEEKS UNTIL THE WATER INTRUSION BECAME SEVERE AND RISKED ELECTRICAL DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. AFTER CONTACTING SAFELITE AUTO GLASS I WAS INFORMED BY THE TECHNICIAN THAT THIS ISSUE IS COMMON ACROSS VOLVO VEHICLES IN HIS EXPERIENCE. THE TOP OF THE WINDSHIELD WAS NOT SEALED TO THE CAR AND COULD BE EASILY SEPARATED WHEN PRESSURE WAS APPLIED FROM INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE VIDEOS AND PHOTOS OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE WHICH WOULD CAUSE THE WINDSHIELD TO SEPARATE FROM THE CAR IN AN ACCIDENT CAUSING SEVERE DAMAGE TO PEOPLE AND PROPERTY. LOOKING ONLINE I HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE ACROSS VOLVO MODELS AND NO RESOLUTION HAS BEEN OFFERED. I CALLED THE VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE TODAY AND WAS TOLD THIS ISSUE COULD NOT BE RESOLVED WITHOUT A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE.

Crash: 1
Water leakage from top of windsheild due to common failure of sealant (known to Volvo) falls directly into steering wheel airbag and, from there, flows into the seam between airbag module and the steering wheel and collecting behind the airbag subjecting the electrical connections of the airbag to moisture trapped behind the airbag. See photos. No warning lights yet. Vehicle is available for inspection by nhtsa.

A MONTH AGO PURCHASED A 2013 VOLVO XC60 FROM A USED CAR DEALERSHIP. ON 12/9/19 THE AIRBAG ICON APPEARED WHICH SAID," SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT." SINCE I LIVE IN NEW YORK AND BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE OUT OF STATE IN ( VIRGINIA) , I CALLED A VOLVO DEALERSHIP NEAR ME ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER THAT PURCHASED THE VEHICLE HAD ANSWERED THE RECALL AND IT WAS THAN FIXED IN 2015. I TOLD THEM IF THAT WAS THE CASE , THAN WHY IS THIS PROBLEM HAPPENING AGAIN, AND IS 2019. I ALSO EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT THIS APPEAR TO BE A DEFECTED ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL SINCE THE SAME PROBLEM IS OCCURRING AGAIN OR IT WAS NEVER ADDRESS PROPERLY IN THE FIRST PLACE BY VOLVO. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE A RISK AND CONCERN , IF I'M IN AN ACCIDENT THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY LEADING TO INJURY OR DEATH.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
3 complaints
The component or system that failed is the driver side door controls for all four windows and both side mirrors. My safety is at risk as I am unable to adjust my mirrors manually or electronically in order to see. I am also unable to roll down any of the windows in the vehicle from the driver door in the event of an emergency. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the Volvo service center. According to my local Volvo service center, this is a common problem in Volvos and they are very familiar with the repair needed to correct. The problem is that the driver door wiring is zip-tied together and over time, as the driver door opens and closes, the zip tie chafes the insulation off of the wiring causing the copper part of the wires to be exposed and twisted together. There are no warning lights reporting this issue, only that the window and mirror controls stop working. The following video link between 9:38-12:16 explains this issue in Volvos. I am writing to advocate for a vehicle recall. I believe this is a manufacturing flaw which could have been avoided by simply using electrical tape and not a zip tie. The repair has been quoted at $800. Driver side door entry is an essential function and should not be a cause for an electrical fire or drivers’ and passengers’ safety. Summary: Vehicle suddenly and completely loses all electric power. i.e. no lights, including hazard lights or brake lights, no engine, no power steering. Status: The root issue has occurred twice, and the vehicle is pending service to positively diagnose and repair the issue. First occurrence: Driver parked the vehicle, turned off the engine, and remained inside with standard electric power active. Upon exiting the vehicle and closing the driver’s door, the door lock button did not respond. Returning to the vehicle it became apparent the reason for the lock failure was the absence of electric power. During the process of preparing to connect jumper cables, electric power returned. This was without actually connecting to a jump source. Second occurrence, 1 day after first: While driving at 60 MPH on a highway, electric power suddenly ceased. Driver unable to activate hazard lights or any other warning to other vehicles. Driver was able to steer to roadside and come to a stop. At suggestion of mechanic shop, driver opened battery compartment and tapped the cables connected to the battery terminal, and power returned. Mechanic suggested hairline fracture of metal connectors of positive cable connecting to vehicle power. Now awaiting mechanic diagnosis and repair. Fortunately the failure did not result in a collision, but does present a clear safety hazard upon its occurrence. The mechanic’s suggestion leads to the suspicion this is a known issue with the vehicle component.

The contact owns a 2013 Volvo XC60. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 5 MPH, the vehicle shut-off without warning. The contact stated that the electrical features ceased to operate in the vehicle. The contact stated that his wife was unable to activate the hazard lights. The contact's wife was unable to exit the vehicle as her driver’s side door would not unlock. His wife was forced to flag down a construction worker who pulled the door open from the outside. As soon the door opened, the lights began to work, and all the electrical features returned. The contact's wife was able to restart the vehicle and drive home. The contact left a message with a service advisor at a dealer to notify them of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but was not yet diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

The vehicle came to a stop in two different occasions (6 months apart) without a reason. The first occasion was while exiting the freeway, there was no car or object in front of me. The second time I had gone over a manhole and the car screeched to a halt on a city street. I was very fortunate that in both occasions I did not have a car behind me or this malfunction would have caused a collision. After the car stopped I was able to continue driving. After the car stopped the message "Auto braking by City Safety" appeared on the dashboard.

THIS VOLVO EXPERIENCES "SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION" PERIODICALLY (ESTIMATED AT 2 TIMES PER YEAR) SINCE IT WAS NEW. THIS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION MANIFESTS ITSELF GENERALLY WHEN COMING TO A STOP (RED LIGHT, DRIVE THRU RESTAURANT, PARKING LOT) BUT HAS HAPPENED ONCE ON THE HIGHWAY. THE ENGINE RACES TO FULL THROTTLE AND LUCKILY, FOR THE INSTANCES SO FAR, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR WITH THE BRAKES. THE ACCELERATION LASTS FOR ROUGHLY 1-2 MINUTES. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED (MAY 31, 2020), I SHIFTED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, AND THE ENGINE RACED TO 8,000 RPMS, HELD THERE FOR A FEW SECONDS, AND THEN RETURNED TO NORMAL IDLE SPEED. I HAVE TAKEN THE TO THE DEALER (QUANTRELL VOLVO, LEXINGTON KY) TO HAVE THIS ISSUE RESOLVED NUMEROUS TIMES WITH NO SUCCESS. AT ONE POINT, THE VOLVO ENGINEERING TEAM SUGGESTED A NEW TRANSMISSION TO FIX THE ISSUE, WHICH WAS DONE AT VOLVO'S EXPENSE BY THIS DEALER, AND STILL THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. IT WAS IN FOR SERVICE MOST RECENTLY IN SEPTEMBER (9/25-9/29) 2020. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND A "CODE" TO EXPLAIN THE FAULT AND STATED THEY THEREFORE COULD NOT DO ANYTHING FURTHER TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I THEN ESCALATED THE ISSUE TO VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE AND WAS GIVEN THE SAME RESPONSE. I CAN UPLOAD DOCUMENTS FROM THE DEALER IF NEEDED, ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE IN GETTING THIS CAR FIXED WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I HAVE A MINOR LEAK ON THE STEERING PUMP ON 2013 VOLVO XC60. WENT TO THE VOLVO-MISSISSAUGA DEALER TODAY (INVOICE# 197408) AND THEY SAID THAT THIS IS NOT QUALIFYING AS A LEAK BUT RATHER IT IS A "VISIBLE SWEAT" FROM THE STEERING PUMP. "VISIBLE SWEAT" MEANS LOOSING STEERING FLUID. STEERING PUMP IS A SAFETY PART OF THE VEHICLE AND I AM CONCERN FOR MY SAFETY. I HAVE PICTURES TO SHOW THE LEAK. I DISAGREE WITH VOLVO-MISSISSAUGA ASSESSMENT AND OPENED A DEFECT COMPLAIN WITH GOV OF CANADA - TRANSPORT CANADA OFFICE. COMPLAIN NUMBER # 2016-0077.

The windshield leaks when I am driving from the passenger side and the driver side. Last rain a lot of water got into the car which makes it very dangerous to drive and obviously to break since it gets slippery. I live in the mountains, and we get a lot of rain and now I have to pay out of pocket to get it diagnosed when even the service advisor said that that particular year and models leaks a lot.

I recently was forced to use the pry-off cap and manual key entry to get into my 2013 Volvo XC60. This was due to the vehicle’s lack of response to the fob, there was no communication between the fob and the electrical system. Once inside, inserting the fob, the engine started but the entire instrument cluster was flashing intermittently the various warning lights, and the windows could not be lowered. The cluster showed failure of speedometer, tachometer, brake system, seat belts and all other gauges on the cluster. Not knowing whether it was safe to drive, I turned it off. I returned later and turned it on, same problem. I went around the block, contacted the Volvo dealer for consultation, and secured an emergency appointment to bring it in. On the next day/the appointment, I drove the car in, during which the systems seemed to have reset themselves, but halfway there the problem started again. At this point the vehicle has been there (Howard Orloff Volvo, 1924 N. Paulina St, Chicago, 1.877.570.6927) since the 28th, they have not been able to give me a diagnosis, and the bill is over $600. How can this problem NOT be a safety risk for ordinary person such as myself? It is my understanding, from researching this, that this is a common and recurring problem so why has there NOT been a recall for what is obviously a defect inherent in this make and model car? Kindly respond with a reference number for this complaint. Thank you very much.

The issue is with the windshields separating from the bonding agent ( not sealing ) it is cause for a safety issue not only because it is loose and can move when pushed up , but water is entering the vehicle through the top part of the windshield and entering the electrical controls for the lights and sun roof causing a potential short or shock hazard, not to mention ruining the interior of the vehicle ,( headliner, mold..etc..). I and many other's ( see link below) feel it is necessary to have Volvo make the replacement of windshields in their vehicles . https://beranek.agrrmag.com/2015/04/volvo-glass-bonding-issue/

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
1 complaint
The problem started 2 years ago and has progressively become worse. The original windshield is leaking water, which drains down inside the A-pillar and windshield. Water also leaks into the air-bag in the A-pillar, and moisture may come in contact with the electronic parts in the dashboard, creating a safety issue and a potential fire hazard. Last year I contacted Tucson Volvo for help, and they referred me to JD Auto Glass (520-370-6599). The local dealer refused to take any responsibility for this safety defect. There have been heavy rains recently in Tucson, and water is dripping onto my lap while I am driving, and trying to wipe the dashboard dry. This causes a major distraction and obstructs my vision, since the water continuously runs down the inside of the windshield glass. Yesterday I contacted Tucson Volvo again, and they referred me to Tony's AutoGlass (520-889-2422). The Owner/Manager of Tony's AutoGlass informed me that leaking windshields are a very common problem with Volvos. I believe this is a very serious safety defect, and am seeking help from your office. Thank You!

WHEN RAINING OUTSIDE WATER DROPS INSIDE ON THE DRIVER FROM THE TOP OF THE WINDSHIELD ABOVE THE STEERING WHEEL . THIS JUST STARTED ON A 7.5 YEAR OLD CAR BUT WITH ONLY 47,850 MILES. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE DRIVER IS GETTING WET AND IS TOTALLY DISTRACTED AND, IF IGNORED, THE BODY WILL RUST, LOOSENING THE WINDSHIELD.. THE CAR CANNOT BE SAFELY DRIVEN IN THE RAIN WITH THIS LEAK AND IT CANNOT BE LEFT OUTSIDE AT ALL IF THERE IS ANY CHANCE OF RAIN, UNLESS THE WINDSHIELD IS COVERED WITH PLASTIC. IF I IGNORE THIS THE CAR WILL RUST AROUND THE WINDSHIELD SO AS TO WEAKEN IT'S ROLE AS A PART OF THE SAFETY CONSTRUCTION TO PROTECT THE OCCUPANTS IN A CRASH.

FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW I'VE HAD TO DEAL WITH A DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELD. IT LEAKS WATER INTO MY CAR AND ON ME WHILE I'M DRIVING. THE WATER TURNS TO MOLD UNTIL I SHAMPOO IT OUT. IT AFFECTS MY VISIBILITY DRIVING. I'VE TRIED TO GET IT FIXED BUT I WAS TOLD IT WAS MY SUNROOF. THE SUNROOF WAS TESTED AND IT IS NOT LEAKING IN THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE MULTIPLE FORUMS OF HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. I WORRY IF I SPEND 1,000 ON A NEW WINDSHIELD THAT IF THIS IS AN OEM PROBLEM IT WILL LEAK AGAIN. THIS ISSUE HAPPENS BOTH DRIVING AND STATIONARY. BUT IN THE MEANTIME I WORRY ABOUT MY FAMILY GETTING SICK FROM MOLD IN THE CAR EVERY TIME IT RAINS AS WELL AS WHEN I'M DRIVING MY VISIBILITY. VOLVO NEEDS TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR RESEALING ALL OF OUR WINDSHIELDS FOR FREE AND REPLACING FRONT CARPETS. I AM NOT EXPERIENCING ANY ELECTRICAL ISSUES WHICH IS GOOD.
