I own a 2004 Volvo XC70 that is experiencing the same fuel pump defect described in Recall R220 / NHTSA Campaign 09V483000 (fuel pump leak). My vehicle exhibits fuel system problems consistent with the recall description. However, my VIN is not included in the current recall population. When I contacted Volvo, I was told my case (ID #250827-000998) was escalated to corporate, but I was later informed that no goodwill assistance would be provided because my VIN is not covered. I specifically requested written confirmation of this determination. This defect poses a safety risk that aligns with the existing recall, and I believe additional vehicles outside the current VIN range may be affected. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether the recall should be expanded to include vehicles like mine.

Faulty fuel pump causing leakage

Fuel pump seal leak/ flange broke. Smelled gas, saw a puddle under the car. Upon fuel pump inspection a failed repair combined with original broken seal flange. We live in a state where the recall was not listed so our next step is to contact volvo.

I WAS DEPARTING MY HOME VILLAGE ABOUT A BLOCK FROM MY HOME AND I HEARD A LOUD BANG IN THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AT ABOUT 15 MPH!! NO BUMP.. NOTHING! I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND THERE WAS NO OBVIOUS ISSUE AT THE INITIAL LOOK AND I DROVE ANOTHER QUARTER MILE AND HEARD A SLIGHT GRIND OR NOISE ON SMALL BUMPS... THEN A CLANK. I BACKED UP AND THERE WAS A PIECE OF THE COIL SPRING ON THE ROAD!!!! THE FRONT LEFT - DRIVERS SIDE - COIL SPRING SNAPPED IN TWO. AT 101,000 MILES. THE CLEAN BREAK AND NO RUST OR UNUSUAL CORROSION INDICATES A FAULTY METAL. HOW CAN I TRUST THE VOLVO XC AGAIN!! SAFETY AND VOLVO ARE NO LONGER WORDS THAT SHOULD BE USED TOGETHER. MY COMPLAINTS TO VOLVO AMERICA WERE RESPONDED TO WITH NO CONSIDERATION TO THE MAGNITUDE OF THE ISSUE. VOLVO DID NOT STAND BEHIND THE OBVIOUS FLAW IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE VEHICLE. 24 JUNE 2011, GOT IN TO MY 2004 VOLVO XC70, APPX 90000 MILES ON GERMAN ROADS, TO DRIVE OFF TO WORK IN THE MORNING. HEARD LOUD SCREECHING NOISE NEAR THE RIGHT WHEEL WELL WHEN I PLACED THE CAR ON DRIVE TO MOVE FORWARD. NEXT THING YOU KNOW, I HAVE A SEVERE AIR LEAK IN THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE. JUST A DAY PRIOR, THE CAR WAS DRIVEN THROUGH THE DAY WITHOUT ANY SYMPTOMS OF PROBLEM AND PARKED IN THE DRIVE WAY WITH NO ISSUES. THE SIDE REAR L/R BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON ALL THE TIME CAUSING A SAFETY CONCERN, THE TOP CENTER LED BRAKE LIGHT CONTINUES TO WORK NORMALLY. TAPPING ON THE BRAKE LIGHT RELAYS INSTALLED IN THE REAR ELECTRONIC MODULE CAUSES THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO SHUT OFF. "RECALL CAMPAIGN NO.131 BRAKE LIGHT RELAY" NEEDS TO BE APPLIED TO 2004 MODELS AS WELL.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC70. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THERE WAS A LOUD ABNORMAL NOISE AND THE VEHICLE NEARLY STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS, INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS, AND TURN SIGNALS FAILED. IN ADDITION, THE SRS, CHECK ENGINE, AND REAR DOOR CAR AJAR WARING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE BATTERY WAS FLUSHED AND RECOMMENDED THAT THE VALET KEY NOT BE USED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE REAR DOOR MODULE WAS REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE CENTRAL ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC70. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS THE VEHICLE MADE A THUMPING SOUND AND DECELERATED. ALSO, ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TURNED OFF AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND TURNING SIGNALS FAILED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT ALL OF THE LIGHTS AND INSTRUMENT PANEL WERE OPERATING NORMALLY AFTER A FEW HOURS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 79,918.

THE CAR WAS GOING 60-63MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY THERE WAS A SUDDEN HARD CLUNK IN THE TRANSMISSION AND MY GUAGE CLUSTER WENT DEAD AND LOST ALL POWER OPTIONS. WAS ALMOST HIT AS I TRIED TO PULL OVER WITH NO BLINKERS, FLASHERS, ETC. AFTER ABOUT 10 MINUTES I TRIED TO START THE CAR AGAIN AND THE DASH CAME BACK BUT SRS WARNING WAS UP ON THE INFO CLUSTER. TOOK MY CAR TO THE REPAIR SHOP (AUTHORIZED VOLVO REPAIR) AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO CODES PRESENT. THEY DROVE THE CAR FOR A WEEK AND SAME THING HAPPENED TO THEM. THEY SUGGESTED THAT THE CEM VOLVO PART NUMBER 30657629 WAS NO GOOD. TO REPLACE IT WOULD BE 1300$ AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER VOLVO OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THIS SAME OCCURRENCE, AND EVEN BEEN IN ACCIDENTS DUE TO THIS FAILURE AT DIFFERENT INTERVALS IN MILEAGE RANGING FROM 50K AND UP. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT HE HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THE REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED A DISCOUNT TOWARDS THE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. I received a recall notice for the defective driver airbag. The nearest dealership is 10 hours away. I called Customer care and they said I would be responsible to transport my Volvo to the dealership in Billings Montana. The vehicle is a 2004 Volvo with 188k miles. Expense and travel is prohibitive to me. I am on a fixed income and I would worry about making a 20hr round trip in an older car. My desire is to gift this car to my granddaughter when she gets her driver's lic. I could not forgive myself if the driver's airbag deployed and the result could be serious injury or death. I contacted the Volvo Customer Care service and they said they could transport the car one way. can you help?

I've been waiting for a recall repair (Recall R10136: Driver Airbag) for 5 months and a local Volvo dealer said that they haven't received necessary parts for months. This is a matter of safety and Volvo should prioritize safety. First appointment with the local dealer was Jan 14 that was canceled by the dealer due to part shortage. Second appointment was on June 15 and it was canceled again by the dealer for the same reason.

THIS COMPLAINT IS FOR A 2004 VOLVO XC70. THIS CAR HAS SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH ITS VARIOUS MODULES. WHEN DRIVING ON A BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, THE CAR JERKED AS IF THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING. AFTER THIS A WARNING LIGHT STATING "BRAKE FAILURE; PULL OVER SAFELY" ILLUMINATED. CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY IN FAST-MOVING TRAFFIC. GOT CAR TO A PARKING LOT AND WAITED ABOUT 30 MINUTES. CAR STARTED AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME, ALTHOUGH BEING ABOUT 50 MILES AWAY. CAR WENT IN TO LIMP MORE AGAIN DURING DRIVE AND LOST ALL DASH INDICATORS, INCLUDING TURN SIGNALS, SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER. LIGHT FOR "CHECK ENGINE" WAS ILLUMINATED. AFTER MECHANIC RESET CODES, HE STATED THAT IT MIGHT BE THE ECM OR TCM. I SENT OFF THE ECM FOR DIAGNOSIS AND IT CAME BACK WITHOUT ANY ERRORS. I THEN SENT OFF THE TCM AND LEARNED THAT IT NEEDED REPAIR. AFTER RECEIVING THE REPAIRED TCM UNIT, WE RE-INSTALLED AND CAR DROVE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. I TOOK THE CAR FOR A 6-HOUR ROUND TRIP DRIVE THIS PAST WEEKEND AND HAD ONE INCIDENT OF THE JERKING, BUT WITHOUT ANY OTHER ISSUES. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT IN THE DRIVE FOR AROUND 20 MINUTES, I TRIED STARTING IT ONLY TO GET ANOTHER "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AND INOPERABLE DASH INDICATORS (SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, TURN SIGNALS, ETC.). TOOK THE CAR TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP TODAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS. THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO CONTACT OCCURRING WITH THEIR COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. THEY RECOMMENDED A REPLACEMENT OF THE CEM AS A FIRST STEP WITH NO GUARANTEE THAT THE PROBLEM RESIDES IN THE THAT MODULE. THAT PART INSTALLED IS OVER $1,100. THIS IS MY FIFTH VOLVO, AND UNDOUBTEDLY, THE WORST YET. I AM CONSIDERING JUNKING IT AND LEAVING VOLVO IN MY PROVERBIAL REAR VIEW. IT IS ASTOUNDING THAT VOLVO HAS NOT OFFERED A RECALL AS THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY HAZARD. PERHAPS IT TAKES PEOPLE DYING FOR CAR COMPANIES TO OWN UP TO FAULTY BUILDING.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 132,645.

I HAVE HAD THE SAME FAILURE 3 TIMES WITH THIS CAR. STARTED CAR UP AFTER IT WAS SITTING IN PARKING LOT ON A VERY HOT DAY. WITHIN 1-2 MILES STARTED EXPERIENCING INABILITY TO ROLL WINDOWS UP OR DOWN, CAR STARTED LOSING POWER AND INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL WENT BLANK. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR SAFETY OFF THE ROAD. IT WOULD NOT START UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING. IT HAS BEEN TOWED TWICE. THE LAST TIME TO A VOLVO DEALER WHO COULD NOT REPLICATE THE FAILURE; NO CODES WERE STORED OR FOUND. I HAVE BEEN BRING MY CAR TO A VOLVO DEALER IN MY AREA FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS. I THOUGHT THAT I COULD TRUST THEM. STARTING IN 2014 I NOTICED THAT THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WOULD APPEAR WHEN DRIVING DURING WET CONDITIONS AND IF I HIT A POTHOLE OF WHICH WE HAVE MANY HERE. I TOLD THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS ON TO 2 DIFFERENT VISITS. BOTH TIMES THEY SAID THEIR WAS NO PROBLEM. WHEN I TOOK MY CAR TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR A SECOND OPTION FOR AN ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT ISSUE, IT WAS DISCOVERED DURING A TEST DRIVE BY THE LEAD MECHANIC THAT MY CAR WAS NOT DRIVING IN AWD. THAT VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND THEIR MECHANICS PUT, ME AND MY FAMILY IN DANGER. UNFORGIVABLE. THIS ISSUE(S) OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING (IN MOTION) IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AS I LIVE IN A LARGE CITY AND WITH ELDERLY PASSENGERS AS I WAS A VOLUNTEER DRIVER FOR THE ELDERLY.

I HAVE A 2004 VOLVO XC70 WITH ONLY 53,000 MILES.ON JUNE 20TH, THE "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE" LIGHT CAME ON WITH NO APPARENT CHANGE IN HANDLING OR ACCELERATION. THE LIGHT THEN WENT OFF 20 MINUTES LATER. THE NEXT DAY AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES, THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON THIS TIME ALONG WITH THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT, AND THERE WAS VIRTUALLY NO ACCELERATION. I GOT THE CAR TO LIMP ALONG AT ABOUT 5 MPH WITH THE HAZARD LIGHTS, AND IT FINALLY STOPPED SO I PUSHED IT ON TO THE CLOSEST PARKING SPOT. THE LIGHT WENT OFF F4 HOURS LATER AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME. I THEN TOOK IT INTO THE SERVICE DEALER. THE MECHANIC RAN THE DIAGNOSTICS ON THE COMPUTER AND THE CODE FOR THE THROTTLE ACTUATOR APPEARED. THEY WERE GOING TO CHARGE ME OVER $1,000 UNTIL I INSISTED THAT IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE 7 YEAR EXTENDED FACTORY WARRANTY PLAN. IT IS NOW GETTING FIXED AND SHOULD GET IT BACK TOMORROW BUT I HAVE READ ONLINE THAT THIS HAPPENS QUITE A BIT WITH THIS MODEL. CAR BEGAN LURCHING/CHUGGING FORWARD AS I TRIED TO ACCELERATE ONTO THE HIGHWAY, REMINISCENT OF SPARK PLUG PROBLEMS, EXCEPT THAT THE PLUGS WERE REPLACED THE DAY BEFORE. THIS TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AS DID THE "ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED" MESSAGE. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, THE THROTTLE CONTROL NEEDS TO BE CLEANED AND POSSIBLY THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I THOUGHT VOLVO HAD FIXED THIS ON '02 AND LATER. GUESS NOT. My car kept getting a light for its coolant levels despite me filling it with proper coolant-I noticed a leak of coolant on the ground & upon getting it inspected from an independent service center, they told me the issue was my radiator so we got the part to fix it and a week later fixed the radiator and I didn’t get the light for coolant again. Although the independent service center told me that i actually had a fuel leakage due to my pump and described the issues I’ve been having with my car for a few months as signs to what problems this is causing, this meaning a funky fuel smell, my car struggling to fully turn on-needing multiple tries to actually fully turn on etc. this puts my safety at risk because fuel leakage is extremely dangerous for multiple reasons. Not inspected by manufacturer police or insurance reps. Other than the coolant light issue and the noticed continued leak after the coolant leakage was fixed. After looking into this issue online I found a recall notice from VOLVO and called them and they claimed my car wasn’t on this recall notice but my year and model is indeed listed and since im having the same problem as the recall listed its concerning me.

THE WHEEL TURNS ONLY TO A CERTAIN POINT AND THEN STOPS. THE INCOMPETENT VOLVO SERVICE DEPT. HAS SAID THAT I NEED MY "STOPS" ADJUSTED - WHY WOULD THEY BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE? I BRING THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE AND THEY DO SOME MEANINGLESS SERVICE AND THE STEERING IS TEMPORARILY FIXED FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN TO SERVICE ANOTHER TIME, THEY TOLD ME MY TIRES WERE THE WRONG SIZE - IT'S THE TIRES THAT VOLVO PUT ON THE CAR, NOT ME. THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES SIGNIFICANTLY BETWEEN 30-45 MPH AND, AGAIN, THEY TOLD ME IT'S THE TIRES. THE AUTO-DIM MIRROR DOES NOT DIM SINCE I LEASED THE VEHICLE AND VOLVO SERVICE TOLD ME THAT IT ONLY WORKS WHEN HEADLIGHTS FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC HITS THE SENSOR. WHAT???? I HAVE LITERALLY BEEN BLINDED BY TRAFFIC BEHIND ME THAT I PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD UNTIL THEY PASS. THE MIRROR DOES NOT WORK AND IS CAUSING ME NOT TO DRIVE AT NIGHT FOR MY OWN SAFETY. VOLVO HAS PRODUCED AN UNSAFE VEHICLE AND WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. I TAKE MY LIFE IN MY HANDS EVERY TIME I GET INTO THE VEHICLE. I KNOW OTHER VOLVO OWNERS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKING PROBLEM AND THEY ARE NOT GETTING SATISFACTION. I HAVE ALSO TALKED OTHER PEOPLE AND ADVISED THEM NOT TO LEASE OR PURCHASE THIS C70 CONVERTIBLE. MY CAR IS 18 MONTHS OLD AND I HAVE ONLY 12000 MILES ON IT BECAUSE I AM FRIGHTENED TO DRIVE IT. *JB

THE NEW XENON HEADLIGHTS ON OUR VOLVO XC70 PROVIDE VERY POOR LIGHT IN LOW BEAM MODE WHEN GOING DOWN HILL. WE HAD A NEAR COLLISION DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE FAR ENOUGH AHEAD OF THE VEHICLE. THE LIGHTS ARE UNSAFE, ESPECIALLY GOING DOWN HILL. WE HAVE CONTACTED VOLVO ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, THEY STATE THAT THE LIGHTS MEET GOVERNMENT STANDARDS AND THERE IS NO ISSUE. *LA

I JUST PURCHASED A NEW C70 VOLVO AND I AM HAVING SOME PROBLEMS ALREADY. (1) THERE WAS A LITTLE SNOW ON THE GROUND FROM A SNOW DRIFT AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CAR WAS SLIDING ALL OVER THE PLACE AS IF I WAS ON OIL AND AS THOUGH THE TIRES WERE NOT TOUCHING THE GROUND. SUBSEQUENTLY, I CALLED THE CORPORATE OFFCE 800.452.1552 AND THEY SAID THAT IT'S BECAUSE I HAVE 17 IN LOW PROFILE TIRES ON THE CAR WHICH TENDS TO GET ON TOP OF THE SNOW AND NOW SUGGESTS THAT I PURCHASE 15 IN SNOW TIRES. IS THIS GOING TO BE A PROBLEM IN THE RAIN AS WELL? I ALREADY SPENT $45,000! (2) BECAUSE OF THE DESIGN OF THE CONVERTIBLE TOP, I CAN'T SEE OUT OF THE BACK RIGHT SIDE. THE COMPANY TOLD ME TO READJUST MY MIRRORS AND SAID THAT THE VIEW IS LIMITED IN ALL CONVERTIBLES. I ALMOST HIT SOMETHING BACKING OUT OF A SPACE BECAUSE I COULDN'T SEE (ENTIRE AREA COVERED W/THE BLACKTOP MATERIAL). WHY CAN'T THEY INSERT A SMALL PLASTIC-LIKE WIDOW THERE? (3) THE BACK OF MY DRIVER'S SEAT KEEPS LOCKING UP WHEN I PULL IT FOWARD TOWARDS STEERING WHEEL. BY DOING SO, I CAN'T GET INTO THE CAR. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE ENGINE IS RUNNING OR NOT. IT HAPPENED 2 TIMES ALREADY AND ONCE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET BLOCKING TRAFFIC. (I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND MOVED THE SEAT BACK TO PUT SOMETHING IN THE BACK AND THAT'S WHEN IT GOT STOCK). SOMETIMES, THE SEAT MOTOR WORKS AND OTHER TIMES IT DOES NOT. WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR, THEY KEPT IT AN ADDITIONAL TWO DAYS BECAUSE THERE WAS A PROBLEM W/THE FRONT SEAT CONTROL MODULE AFFECTING THE DRIVERS SIDE SEAT. THEY ASSURED ME THAT I WAS NOT GETTING A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE. A SERVICE PESON TOLD ME THAT IT'S A REGULAR PROBLEM AND THAT DRIVERS JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO MOVE THE SEATS PROPERLY. CORPORATE TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NO RECALL AND THAT THE LOCAL LAWS WOULD DETERMINE IF VOLVO COULD BUY MY CAR BACK. DO I HAVE TO WAIT FOR AN ACCIDENT BEFORE NHTSA INVESTIGATES?*AK
