How to read a Chrysler 300 VIN — every digit explained

Every Chrysler 300 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 300.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your 300 VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

This vehicle was involved in a tragic car accident. The passengers both suffered deep laceration to the skull and other vital parts of the body. There was a recall notice that was sent to the owner 4 months after the fatal accident had occurred. Based on police inspection of the vehicle, they’ve determined there was mechanical failure to the vehicle which can be seen through a police bodycam at the police impound lot. The front passenger suffered a 6 inch deep cut to the skull according to the medical examiner’s report. The child in the rear also suffered a deep laceration to the ankle and foot despite being restrained in a child seat. Driver suffered a graze cut to the side of his head and survived the tragic accident after recovering from a coma he stated that the brakes did not function properly when depressed moments prior to the accident. Data recorder from the vehicle shows the driver was depressing the brake pedal the entirety of the time up to the moment of impact. This vehicle was t-boned by an suv, and this accident should have been survivable, however the passenger seat looks to be torn out of its brackets according to the pictures from the accident scene. I am requesting this vehicle be investigated as there are many vehicles similar to this one that could have dangerous defects which were outlined in the safety recall notice that was mailed to the owner. The safety recall did mention to stop driving this vehicle immediately, however this notice did not arrive in a timely manner to where anyone could have taken action immediately. I am requesting that this vehicle be inspected for not only the safety of the community it’s but for identifying why two people lost their lives due to a manufacture failure that could have been prevented if notification was sent in a timely manner. Thank you and I look forward to following up with someone regarding this immediate and dangerous concern. I have the original letters and when they were mailed to the owner.

This car has the rotary dial for transmission selection. I pulled this car has a rotary dial for the shifter. I put the vehicle in park and exited the car to close a gate. As soon as i exited the vehicle it began to roll backwards. I could not get back in the vehicle in time to stop it from exiting the garage. The driver's door caught on the garage door pillar turning it 180 degrees and pushing it into the front fender. Damage to the vehicle was $3210.05. Since the repairs were completed, the same problem has occurred two additional times, fortunately with no damage. A faulty design for sure.

2015 300

My wife pulled out of the garage, forgot her glasses, pulled halfway back into the garage , put the car in park. As she was exiting the car, it lunged forward hitting our garage wall. We have the rotary dial shifter on this car. It reminded me of the actor in los angeles who got out of his car to get his mail and his jeep went out of park and unfortunately pinned him against his fence and was killed. I had the car into service and it was inspected by the dealer and also an independent engineering firm. I received a letter from chrysler saying that nothing was found to be wrong with the car. I don't believe this at all. Everyone knows that chrysler has an issue with their electronic shifters.

Tl* the contact owned a 2006 chrysler 300. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The contact pulled the vehicle over and a loud abnormal noise came from the fuel tank area. The vehicle caught fire underneath the hood and undercarriage. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was totaled and towed to a junkyard. The manufacturer inspected the vehicle and cut a piece of wire from the fuse box; however, they were not able to assist. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 180,000.

My chrysler 300 2006 has been stalling at low speeds and when stopped after refueling. I took the vehicle to the dealership to have them check the problem for the first time in june. They did not find anything so i continued to deal with the issue until september because the issue got worse and stalled on the expressway. I received a notice from chrysler about my vehicle having a recall and to set up service. Only after i brought the notice to the dealer did the acknowledge that this was the reason my car was stalling so much. They said the repairs were covered under warranty and they would order the fuel tank. This was over a month ago the dealership still has not received the parts. I recently was in a car accident because of this defect, my vehicle stalled on on the road and caused a 4 car pile up. I have contacted chrysler and they are not trying to resolve the issue. *tr

Filled up with gas. While driving 30 mph car stalled going down a hill and brakes became rigid. To try to avoid crashing into other vehicle i went over a sidewalk. Tire broke, hit a tree and had to shut off car to stop car as brakes were not stopping the car. Then i ended damage another vehicle because of busy traffic. This all happened because the car stopped less than 5 minutes after refueling. *tr

2005 300

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chrysler 300. The contact stated that there was an abnormal noise and a burning odor coming from the vehicle. Also, the vehicle failed to crank initially and would stall intermittently. The manufacturer indicated that the vehicle had been serviced on august 3, 2010 for a fuel system recall campaign in which both fuel pump modules were replaced. Sahara chrysler jeep dodge ram (5050 w sahara ave, las vegas, nv 89146, (800) 506-5050) diagnosed that both fuel pump modules needed to be replaced again. The contact felt that by replacing the same oem fuel pump modules, the failure would recur. The dealer had not been authorized to service the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was waiting on a response to determine their guidelines for the dealer's repair. The failure mileage was not available.

Vehicle behind me was not expecting me to stop in middle of road and crashed into the read of my car. Damage to both bumper covers, but neither vehicle was undriveable as the speed was very slow. This is a known problem with the 300c's of this year and is avoidable by filling the tank to only 3/4 or so. On 01-17-2015 less than a month ago. While driving home, the car surged/hesitated and seemed to lose power. I also noticed the check engine icon illuminated. I was able to move to the expressway shoulder and shut the engine then restarted it, but the check engine icon still was illuminated, and the shifter would not shift. It was locked. No p, r, n, d, or s. I tried to make a telephone call via the vehicle's bluetooth but all my data base was gone. It was working earlier in the day. I shut the engine and exited the car to make a cell phone call. When i re-entered the car i was able to engage the shifter to the drive position, but the check engine icon was still illuminated, as well as other instrument cluster icons were missing and some were present that should not have been. However the car would not move until about 3000 rpm. When it finally did move, it moved very slowly, relative to the engine speed. Finally it shifted to a higher gear and seemed to drive normally. I exited the expressway and drove around the residential area to re-assure myself that the car would get me home safely. It was late saturday night and the dealer was closed. I re-entered the expressway to rerun to my home. I never knew what gear the transmission was in. Paddle shifters were inoperative. While driving home i the navigation map was intermittently glitching, instrument cluster icons some missing many flashing. Also no cell phone. The dealer claimed the problem was corrected, but the work order stated 181905a1 transmission control module, software flashed. I assumed the problem was corrected but because it took place only one month old car, i became apprehensive. They never mentioned anything about the electronic/tipm failures that occurred with the instrument cluster. At this time i had no idea what a tipm was ! Slightly more than one month later my vehicle failed again that was a tipm failure.

Upon driving on the highway the legal speed limit is always 70mph. While following the flow of traffic individuals ahead of me started slowing down to a cruise speed of 40-50mph abruptly. While paying attention to the change in pace i slowed down as well to feel comfortable with the flow of traffic. When checking my rearview mirror to see if there was a opening to change lanes i noticed a ford truck coming from behind at a excelled pace. With seconds before the contact i braced myself for the wreck. Without paying attention suddenly the driver from behind ran into my rear of my car. This impact not only shattered my entire rear window, but my truck caved in, both my tail lights were knocked out, and i was knocked into the next far right lane. During the impact i braced myself and hit the steering wheel, my driver side rear mirror was knocked down and the hazard wheel alignment lights came on. While all of this occurred i was shocked my driver side airbag didn't employ. I am a male, 5?8, 160 pounds so i am sure the electronics could tell a person was visibly in the seat. Had i not seen the truck come from behind i could've been thrown out the window. I am surprised of the malfunction and wanted to report it. *tr

Steering has felt "sticky" for about a week. It is difficult to turn the steering wheel at all, and it would get stuck in certain positions so i physically couldn't turn or change directions. The problem wasn't too bad at first, but then got extremely bad as of 08/07/2019. Steering was almost impossible, and the steering wheel would get stuck n almost every turn, making driving almost impossible, and very dangerous. As of 08/09/2019, the steering wheel is almost constantly stuck, and requires extreme force, or slamming on the brakes to turn or change directions at all. Even slight turns are difficult and dangerous. The car is now completely unsafe to drive, and has swerved off the road several times, and even scraped a divider because the steering wheel was locked into place and couldn't be corrected. These were all while driving, driving on the highway, steering was slightly easier. But that is where the crash with the divider happened. Driving on city streets was more difficult because there are more turns and they are sharper. This is now completely impossible. When the car is stationary, or in park, the steering wheel is locked in place and can't be turned.
